On stage, he was joined by a full band and guest vocalist Diana Gordon. The Act served as the perfect complement to Brunson's hilarious lineup of sketches , making for an all-around entertaining night.

Lil Yachty transformed Studio 8H into a dreamy desert night spent under the stars for his jaw-dropping cover of "the BLACK seminole." Lil Yachty introduced a reverb to his vocals that created a delightfully kaleidoscopic effect, with the band's accompanying riffs and electric guitar solos elevating the track's energy. Gordon's vocals were a haunting highlight of the performance.

While "the BLACK seminole." is haunting and mesmerizingly twisted, Lil Yachty's "drive ME crazy!" served as more light-hearted fanfare to end the night. With projections of sunny days and joyful skies, Gordon's vocals led the way for  Lil Yachty's latest love ballad .

Lil Yachty opened his Saturday Night Live musical guest debut with “the BLACK seminole.,” the first track off of the album Let’s Start Here , which came out in January.

Yachty’s performance featured singer-songwriter Diana Gordon, and the pair–along with a full band–appeared on stage in what resembled a nighttime Florida swamp.

Yachty is coming off the release of his latest full-length Let’s Start Here. The album was an unexpected pivot from his previous albums. During its rollout, he often spoke about his experimentation because he wanted to be taken seriously as an artist.

“I think I created it just because I really wanted to be taken serious as an artist, you know. Not just some SoundCloud rapper, not some mumble rapper. Not some guy that just made one hit,” he said. “I wanted to be really taken serious because music is, like, everything to me. I respect all walks of music, not just rap and hip-hop, everything. So I think I wanted to make something to show the world just how great it was to me.”

Questlove became a fan of Let’s Start Here immediately after it dropped on Jan. 27. “After about 3 listens (and I thought I’d NEVER say this—-& not because “I didn’t expect this from Lil Yachty”——but just in general I didn’t expect this from MUSIC) How should I put it? I really really really really love this Lil Yachty record and I love when artists pull off a good departure record,” he wrote.

When the album was released, Yachty joined Zane Lowe in-studio on Apple Music 1 to discuss his ambitious new project. He told Apple Music about entering the second chapter of his career with the creative departure, shining a light on other eras of music and studying Pink Floyd, aiming to create a cohesive “no skips” project, and more.

He also chatted with Lowe about evolving as an artist and embracing new sources of inspiration. Regarding the album title and origin of the project, he said, “I changed the name like eight times. And I settled with  Let’s Start Here  because I just felt like it was the beginning of the second chapter in my career. And I don’t know what’s next. But I just felt like… and I’ve had such a long career. It’s been about almost seven years in March, I think. And I’ve dealt with so much and I’ve been through so much in just trying to figure out my artistry and just myself as a person. I was a kid. I graduated high school and then six months later this life started. So I was just a kid just going through life. So I was just looking at it like my second chapter in my career. So I settled with  Let’s Start Here .

He also discussed the way others view his prowess on the mic. “It’s not that I didn’t take it serious, but it was just like I wasn’t trying to be the best rapper or the most creative artist. I wasn’t even trying to make music. I didn’t even care if… I wasn’t thinking about music lasting 10 years. I didn’t care. I was just making music, but I still cared. And then as I got a little bit older, then I started to care about how people perceived me as a rapper.”

Lil Yachty Was In Rockstar Mode During A Performance Of ‘The Black Seminole’ On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Alex Gonzalez

Lil Yachty is maintaining his momentum after having dropped his critically-acclaimed fourth album, Let’s Start Here back in January. Tonight (April 1), Yachty made his debut on the Saturday Night Live stage, where he performed, “The Black Seminole,’ the opening track from the album.

During the performance, Yachty maintained an air of mystery, wearing dark sunglasses and a hoodie. The stage was lit with blue and black lighting, and filled with plants and greenery. In the background was a flashing moon surrounded by a rainbow. Yachty was accompanied by an all-women backing band, for which he had posted a call for auditions back in January .

In an interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe , he elaborated on why he wanted to assemble an all-women band.

“I just feel like women don’t get as much respect as men when it comes to the music industry,” said Yachty. “So I was like, ‘These songs are pretty badass, and I want to show women playing them.”

Midway through the performance, the beat transitioned to a smooth, vocal interlude, performed by Diana Gordon, who delivered smooth, impeccable sounds, dressed in an elegant ivory gown.

Saturday Night Live recap: Abbott Elementary star Quinta Brunson hosts with musical guest Lil Yachty

The Emmy winner makes her SNL debut.

Hello there - welcome back! Or, more precisely, a hearty welcome to our noble leaders on the island of Manhattan, who have surely been whipping together a delicious 90-minute smorgasbord of comedy for us this week. How could they not? Tonight's host is Quinta Brunson , the extremely talented star, creator, and writer behind Abbott Elementary .

I am joined tonight by former SNL cast member Robin Duke, who is co-starring in Shelved , which just premiered on CTV and is being called Canada's Abbott Elementary . I asked Duke - who also appeared on SCTV and continues to perform in sketch comedy - about appearing in a sketch show then moving onto a sitcom, a la Brunson's trajectory from A Black Lady Sketch Show to Abbott Elementary .

"It's nice to do a character that has an arc. When you're doing sketch, you do it for that one moment. Characters don't really have arcs in a sketch," she replied. "In sitcoms they do! When you're doing sketch, you have to get so much more information out about a character in a short amount of time. Whereas you can gradually reveal a character over a sitcom like Schitt's Creek or Shelved . In sketch, you have to do it in five minutes, which is challenging. To keep it grounded and real, but also make it hilarious."

Actually, that last sentence could also be said about Abbott Elementary 's appeal. So let's just lock and load, and see what the show's concocted after a weeks-long hiatus - it's SNL in Review time.

They couldn't resist this: "It's me. Hi. I'm the problem, it's me," says James Austin Johnson's Trump, quoting Taylor Swift . A bunch of easy jokes about the former President's recent indictment. At first, Trump suggests he will go away now, quietly to prison. Just kidding, it is April Fool's Day! He's pulling a Jim from The Office . (Here's some trivia you probably didn't need: tonight's episode is the April 1st show. Who hosted the April 1st show back in 1989? Mel Gibson.) JAJ is so sharp as Trump, yet they have him singing so-so parodies of "Ironic".

Duke said to me: "The writing is really good this year, and different… I like when things are [different], you get a variety." Indeed, there's some moments here. It goes way beyond the Baldwin years!

It is fun to see Kenan Thompson 's Don King next to JAJ's Trump. In a curious move, Devon Walker plays Afro Man — this song was the theme song of the film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back . Back in 2001! Very specific reference. Mikey Day singing "This Boy's A Liar" — strange energy indeed folks.

Brunson is so excited to be here. She's been dreaming about this since she was a kid - instead she took an easier path, creating and starring in a network sitcom. The audience is hanging on her every word, they love it.

She shares a video Barack Obama made for her mom. Her mother was a Philadelphia teacher, which leads to a lovely and sincere moment in which she recognizes the hard work that teachers do, and calls for them to be paid a proper wage.

This was cute and straightforward. Nothing wrong with that.

"Drug Dealer"

Andrew Dismukes and Devon Walker are looking to score a little cocaine in a club bathroom. The bathroom attendant, Marcello Hernandez, approaches them with an offer. Brunson leaves a stall, with her own pitch. Jokes about Gwyneth Paltrow's skiing trial ensue and many other very funny tropes about white people (Noah Baumbach, the song "Last Resort") as the various dealers try to one-up each other describing the pureness of their producer.

Good use of the new cast with Kenan. Commenting on the new cast members working alongside established vets, Duke shares: "You really see how people grow after being on the show for a long time, how strong they become. It's hard to judge the new cast, as a lot of them haven't been given that opportunity yet to really play. Whereas the veterans have. I mean, Kenan! C'mon! Phenomenal. He's so easy in front of the camera and loose. Just being his funny stuff, that's hard to do. It takes a while to get that comfortable."

I loved this. Watch it!

"Bridesmaid Cult Documentary"

The latest cult documentary - a la Wild Wild Country - is about women lured into acting as bridesmaids. This is hilarious. Watch it!

"Couple Goals"

Host James Austin Johnson introduces married couples answering questions about one another. As we have seen before, the responses are revealing and embarrassing. Slowly but surely, a newer angle emerges. Kenan's character is petrified that his wife (Brunson) will experience a terrible accident which will force him to give up his dreams to nurse her. (His parents saw a similar fate.) A dark premise, and they mostly execute it, I think.

A strong Kenan episode so far!

"Traffic"

Dad (Day) and his daughter ( Chloe Fineman ) get cut off in traffic by another driver (Brunson). Using exaggerated signs and body language, the two characters antagonize one another.

I like the camera angles and creativity here. And the comedy escalates! Well done. Another good one - watch it!

Lil Yachty first musical performance

"I can see why people like Lil Yachty, but not me though/Not even dissin', it just ain't for me" -Eminem (Also me)

"the BLACK seminole" is the first track off Let's Start Here . It's less "SoundCloud rap" than autotuned psychedelica crossed with Pink Floyd.

"Weekend Update"

Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the Trump indictment. The Jost jokes flop hard – it turns out Che has told the audience to not laugh. Pretty great moment! Watch this.

A Florida charter school is embroiled in a controversy involving a parent complaint that accused the school of showing students pornography by exposing them to Michelangelo's David statue. To comment? "The world's greatest sculpture and a very pretty boy!" AKA David (Longfellow). This is the second time tonight that Longfellow has been engulfed in paint - pretty clever. David complains how uptight Americans are - in Italy, their version of SNL can show penetration. "Our Matt Foley lived in a man down by the river," he quips. Really good.

Short King Spring is here! Marcello Hernandez, a self-described "petit prince", comes on to discuss. He comes from a proud lineage: Minions, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Beethoven! Meanwhile, Slender Man and Bin Laden — both tall! He leaves with words of encouragement and a startling revelation: Jost himself is a short king. (He's standing at the Update desk, not sitting! Gasp.) Fun segment.

"Midwife"

Mrs. Murphy ( Heidi Gardner ) is giving birth. Her contractions are thirsty seconds apart and she's crowning. Dr. Rogers (Brunson) is her obstetrician. Mrs. Murphy's midwife is Barry ( Bowen Yang ). Turns out that Yang and Brunson's characters know each other - they met at a BBQ before a Macklemore concert.

Three years later, the same situation happens. This time? Barry pretends to not remember Dr. Rogers. Very silly. We flash back to the BBQ inquisition - then back to Mrs. Murphy's second child being born. Lots of wig changes for Yang. Embuuuurrassing situations unfold. I like this!

Lil Yachty second musical performance

Diana Gordon is back for "drive me crazy" - she kills it on the funky chorus. The rest of the song is a letdown.

It's like Yachty - with the hat, the collaborations, the set, the orchestra - has learned the right lessons about how to be an innovative, boundary-pushing artist. But it's not a recipe.

"Bosses"

Top salesman Daniels (Sarah Sherman) is chummy with everyone in the office - but is obviously harassing the new girl Janet (Fineman). Complete with an impression of a sex computer.

Brunson joins the show - together with Daniels they are known as the Penis Brothers. They launch into a musical performance involving, um, Janet.

Wow. (Note who they cast in this sketch... and who they don't. Feels deliberate given the lines they approach here. Yowza.)

"Please Don't Destroy - Street Eats"

"Street Eats" has a strong Lonely Island vibe. The boys try to show their fluency with the "real" New York and embarrass themselves.

Final thoughts

Lil Yachty Takes the ‘SNL’ Stage

by Jacob Uitti April 3, 2023, 7:00 am

Over the weekend, acclaimed rapper Lil Yachty performed on the Saturday Night Live stage for the first time.

Videos by American Songwriter

With host, Abbot Elementary star Quinta Brunson looking on, the psychedelic rapper performed the customary two songs on Saturday (April 1), “The Black Seminole.” and “Drive Me Crazy!” Both songs come from Lil Yachty’s popular new album  Let’s Start Here.

During his performance, the lyricist was backed by singer-songwriter Diana Gordon and a full band. Gordon is featured on both of the studio versions of the songs Yachty performed on the comedy sketch show.

Lil Yachty released his acclaimed album in January. The album includes songwriting credits from artists like Mac DeMarco, Alex G, and Tory Lanez. Lil Yachty rose to fame recently thanks in part to the viral song “Poland” that he uploaded on SoundCloud recently.

Many have praised his latest LP, pointing to psychedelic rock influences like Pink Floyd on the imaginative tracks.

Up next for Saturday Night Live are shows slated for both April 8 and April 15. On April 8, the variety show will be hosted by former cast member Molly Shannon and the musical guest will be the brother trio The Jonas Brothers. The following week, the show will be hosted by Ana De Armas and feature musician Karol G, who boasts a staggering 61 million followers on Instagram.

Past musical guests in 2023 have included Lizzo, Jack White, The 1975, Kelsea Ballerini, Coldplay, Lil Baby, and Sam Smith.

Check out both songs from the rapper (featuring Gordon) below.

McDonald's All American Games

Known for his unique style and catchy tunes, Lil Yachty has become a household name in hip-hop. Originally from Atlanta, he's dropped several albums and mixtapes that have climbed the charts, solidifying his spot on the Billboard 100. And if that wasn't enough, you might have spotted him making appearances on the TV show “Grown-ish,” showcasing his versatility.

But Lil Yachty isn't one to take a break. Recently, he hit up the stage at the 47th McDonald’s All American Game, held at the Toyota Center in Houston. This event is a highly anticipated event in the basketball world, bringing together the best players from all over the country, following in the footsteps of legends like Magic Johnson , Michael Jordan , and Kobe Bryant . And among the stars of today, you'll find names like Candance Parker , Skylar Diggins , Caitlin Clark , Angel Reese , and more who have played in the game.

Yachty spoke with BET.com about performing at the McDonald’s All American game and how the game helped to spark his love for basketball.

“The McDonald’s All American Game has been a big deal since I was a child trying to collect those special jerseys,” Yachty said. ”I formed a partnership with McDonald's which has stretched across different platforms and it’s an honor to be a part of the game.  I'm extremely grateful to have this opportunity. The partnership keeps growing.”

As he prepared to perform for and meet some of the top high school players who will go on to play collegiate ball, in the NBA, and the WNBA, he’s been closely following women’s college basketball which drew the biggest numbers in the history of the sport .

“I'm not as in tune with some of the new cats as my friends are. They all came down and wanted to see the game. But I've been loving the Women’s March Madness games. Caitlin Clark is amazing. She killed,” Yachty said.

“The women's basketball games have been just as exciting and interesting as the men’s game. I wanted to catch them play live and to see Caitlin play in real life,” he continued. “I think it's fun and refreshing to see the women go at it on the court.”

In another recent performance, Yachty took to the Saturday Night Live stage and performed two songs from his latest album, Let’s Start Here. Yachty gave thrilling renditions of “the BLACK seminole” and “drive ME crazy!” along with vocalist Diana Gordon .

“I'm grateful because performing for me just comes second nature but SNL is live and televised,” Yachty said. “It’s just a different ballgame, unlike a normal show. It's so crazy and I wasn't nervous.”

“The new album is a much more different approach for me. I'm singing slower and I had to concentrate on my notes. I had to rehearse and I just wanted to make sure that I didn't look like a fool to Queen Diana,” he continued. “She's so talented and just insane,” he continued. “I didn't want to embarrass her. It was something I always wanted to do. I hope one day that I get to host and I'd love to do another performance. I love SNL and it was a great experience.”

Outside of music, Yachty hosts his own popular podcast, “A Safe Place” with MitchGoneMad, where he has conversations with numerous people from all walks of life, including everyone from Dr. Umar Johnson to J.Cole. He spoke about how much he enjoys podcasting and why he needs to carve out time to make it happen.

“I was a little nervous when we started the show but it's fun. Podcasting is different from rapping. With rap, you have expectations, you have to have an image and you have to be a certain way. But when you do podcasts, you can be your natural self,” he explained. “I do it with my best friend and we just get to talk to great people about everything. It doesn’t have to be serious if we don't want it to be. It can be light-hearted or whatever we want the conversation to be about. It's great.”

“I make the time to balance music and podcasting,” he continued. “I try to make the best out of the conversations. It's fun and I enjoy it.”

Whether it’s performing or podcasting, Yachty wants everyone to feel his love for his art.

“I always want people to look at me and see the love and feel the love because you never know what people are going through,” Yachty said. I don’t want anyone to think any more of me than I am. I'm just like everyone else. So when people see me,  I just hope they feel love.”

Lil Yachty Partners With McDonald's Canada For "Menu Song (Remix)"

Ever since McDonald’s launched the Travis Scott Meal in 2020, it’s become a common trend for celebrities and musicians to partner with fast-food chains. In 2021, Saweetie teamed up with Mickey D’s for her own menu edit, with Offset and Cardi B following suit in 2023.

Today (April 2), Lil Yachty and the food giant united for their “Menu Song (Remix).” The pair gave the 1989 classic tune a modern update alongside an accompanying 90-second clip. In the video, the “Strike (Holster)” hitmaker could be seen rapping his order to a cashier.

“Going from working at a McDonald’s in Atlanta to collaborating on the ‘Menu Song (Remix)’ with McDonald’s Canada is a wild, full-circle moment that brought back memories and is such a reminder that anything in life can happen,” Yachty shared in a press statement .

McDonald’s Canada CMO Alyssa Buetikofer added, “We hope these new takes on the McDonald’s Menu Song, brought to life by Lil Yachty and Mike Clay, will evoke the excitement Canadians felt for McDonald’s the first time they heard the song, and look forward to introducing it to a new generation of fans. It’s also a celebration of the love Canadians have for our iconic menu items.”

While artists like Scott and Saweetie arguably take the cake when it comes to brand partnerships, Yachty also has a long list of collaborations. He previously worked with Reese’s Puffs and Reebok. Additionally, the QC rapper joined forces with Nautica for his own collection in 2017.

Musically, 2024 is expected to be a big year for Yachty. In February, he and producer James Blake announced their joint project, Bad Cameo . The first-mentioned musician is also slated to perform at the Dreamville Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday (April 6). His other scheduled shows include Milwaukee’s Summerfest, which is headlined by Lil Uzi Vert.

Lil Yachty Serves Remix To Iconic McDonald’s “Menu Song”

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Lil Yachty has gone from working at McDonald’s to working with McDonald’s. On Tuesday (April 2), McDonald’s Canada released a new ad featuring the artist. Yachty remixes the restaurant’s 1980s “Menu Song.” The colorful reimagining follows the original opening line, “Welcome to McDonald’s, may I take your order, please?” as the rapper delivers his order drenched in auto-tune. Naturally.

Yachty journeys through Mickey D’s menu as he attempts to order everything available at the fast food joint. “Can I get a Big Mac, McWrap, McFlurry, and a McDouble? I’m a keep it real, I need a Happy Meal, a McCrispy, and ten McNuggets,” he raps. “ Tasty golden fries , a cold drink with extra ice, a junior chicken would be fire, and a sweet hot apple pie.”

The ad itself is a colorful and zany take on the stuffy corporate visuals of the original commercial. Scenes find the artist taking his order at McDonald’s surrounded by tons of Yachty clones, a fish eye shot of the artist in the restaurant, sitting on top of (extra) ice cubes, serving fresh hot apple pies from a cartoonishly purple house, rhyming on a golden brick road, and so much more fantastical settings. Yachty spoke about the opportunity to work with the Golden Arches after once working there in his youth.

“Going from working at a McDonald’s in Atlanta to collaborating on the ‘Remix Menu Song’ with McDonald’s Canada is a wild full circle moment that brought back memories and is such a reminder that anything in life can happen,” Lil Boat said in a  statement .

Mike Clay, who helped produce the “Menu Song Remix,” also issued a statement regarding the new partnership. Clay hopes that the jingle “gets Canadians in a good mood next time they order.” “When McDonald’s reached out and asked me to get creative with their Remix Song, I was like, ‘Oh que oui!’ Working with such an iconic brand has been nothing but fun and inspiring,” he said.

McDonald’s Canada offers a remixed menu along with the remixed song. From April 2 to April 29, the Canadian establishments will offer wild combinations to customers, creating new takes on old favorites. Items on the Remix Menu include the Chicken Cheeseburger, Surf’ N Turf Burger, Sweet Chilli Junior Chicken, and the Apple Pie McFlurry.
