Woman dies after falling overboard from a boat and into the Miami River, reports say

A woman has died after falling off a boat and into the Miami River on Sunday afternoon, according to reports.

Authorities received a report of the fall shortly after 4 p.m. and sent Miami Police Marine Patrol units to 485 Brickell Avenue in Brickell, spokesperson Kiara Delva told the Miami Herald.

Upon arrival, the marine patrol crews spotted the woman, who was seen in cell phone video obtained by Only in Dade getting pulled out of the water. She was then taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Fernando Veliz told NBC 6 that he and his girlfriend were on a personal watercraft in the Miami River when they noticed people on a boat screaming.

“When we get around the boat, we see that it’s actually a person,” Veliz said. “I realize and I was like, she’s actually drowning. and I took my vest off and I tried to jump in there to get her.”

Veliz said he wasn’t able to reach the woman.

“I know that I did what I could, but I wish, of course, I could have been a little bit faster and maybe we would be having a different type of discussion right now,” he said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s investigation, including the circumstances that led to her going overboard, is ongoing.

Sunday’s incident comes weeks after the body of a California man, Abraham Mgowana, was found in the Miami River. Mgowana, 35, of Berkeley, fell from a charter yacht Feb. 24.

Dark Side of Miami River, $4M Stealth Yacht Sinks in Miami River!

Boating is undeniably a wonderful way to create cherished memories on the water, whether you’re on a river, bay, or any other chosen waterway. However, it’s crucial to recognize that boating also comes with significant responsibilities. It’s not an activity where one can simply disregard safety and take risks, as this can lead to dangerous and costly consequences.

As numerous videos available online demonstrate, things can escalate quickly when you’re out on the water. Dangerous situations don’t wait for you, even if you’re enjoying a leisurely day on the boat. In fact, unfamiliar environments often make disasters unfold rapidly, and when you’re on a boat, events tend to transpire in a hurry.

In this feature, we turn our attention to the vigilant camera work of the Boat Zone team on YouTube, which provides a glimpse of various incidents that unfolded on the Miami River. The Miami River is renowned for its vibrant party scene, with super yachts and lively boat parties that attract spring breakers.

With so much excitement and chaotic action, it’s no surprise that some remarkable situations occur. In the video below, our host guides us through some of the most significant boating mistakes made on the Miami River. While some of these mishaps could happen to anyone, others are undoubtedly the result of poor decision-making.

One of the most memorable mishaps involves a boat called the “Vanquish Falcon.” It passes by the camera and then abruptly returns in reverse just moments later. Sadly, this vessel was in the process of sinking. Fortunately, the captain managed to evacuate the passengers from the boat and hurriedly sped away in an attempt to save the yacht. Despite all efforts to rescue the vessel, which was estimated to be worth around $4 million, it eventually succumbed to the water.

Boating is an incredible pastime, but it’s essential to prioritize safety and adhere to best practices to ensure a pleasant and secure experience on the water.

MDFR save 2 after boat sinks off Haulover Inlet

HAULOVER BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - Two people were rescued by crews after their boat sank off of the Haulover Inlet.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, late Tuesday afternoon.

“Air rescue being requested on path two, it’s going to be in reference to a vessel taking on water,” said a dispatcher over Broadcastify police scanner. “88th and Collins Avenue.”

The U.S. Coast Guard also joined MDFR during the search for the boaters.

7Skyforce hovered over the scene, where the boaters were placed on a fire rescue boat.

According to fire rescue, City of Miami Beach Fire Rescue originally received the call of the boaters stranded and referred the incident to MDFR.

One of the boaters was on the phone while he was in the water.

“They advise that the vessel is completely submerged, there’s two patients in the water. Ask if they have flares with them before they went down, anything that can give us a visual,” the dispatcher said.

The boaters were in the water for almost an hour. They were transported to a marina by rescue crews.

A tow boat arrived at the scene to remove the vessel.

What caused their boat to sink is under investigation.

Just In Time: Sinking Yacht Rescued At Haulover Inlet

by NextCatch Fishing Team | Dec 30, 2022 | Blogs | 0 comments

 alt=

A sinking yacht at Haulover inlet was rescued just in time earlier this month when the boat started taking on water.

The sixteen meter Sunseeker flybridge yacht had twelve passengers aboard when things took a turn for the worst. The near catastrophe happened at the famous Haulover inlet Miami Dade, Florida a little after 2pm on December 12 .

Crew aboard the boat were quick to react and transferred the woman and children to safety.

TowBoatUS first arrived to assist the yacht and ITowBoats arrived at some point after. Miami Police and Miami Dade Fire Rescue also came out to assist.  The sinking yacht appears to have had a broken hose pipe in the engine room that caused it to take on water.

ITowBoatUS ended up successfully getting the Sunseeker back safely to the marina.

Wavyboats captured the entire ordeal that ended with the boat being saved with no injuries to passengers.

The Sunseeker involved is a Manhattan 52 second series model that replaced the 55 model and debuted in fall of 2016.

‘I did what I could': Would-be rescuer speaks as Woman who fell into Miami River from boat dies

Video from only in dade shows rescue crews pulling the woman out of the water on sunday, by ari odzer and nbc6 • published march 18, 2024 • updated on march 18, 2024 at 6:52 pm.

A woman who reportedly fell from a boat and into the Miami River on Sunday afternoon has died, authorities said Monday.

Miami Police Marine Patrol responded to the scene around 4 p.m. after receiving reports of a woman falling overboard.

Crews were later able to locate her and video from Only in Dade shows them pulling her out of the water. She was then rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Miami Police confirmed on Monday morning that the woman did not survive. Her identity hasn't been released.

Witness Fernando Veliz spoke with NBC6 on Monday and said he was on a personal watercraft with his girlfriend in the Miami River when he saw people on a boat screaming and pointing at the water. At first he thought it was a dog that ended up in the water.

"When we get around the boat, we see that it's actually a person," Veliz said. "I realize and I was like, she's actually drowning. and I took my vest off and I tried to jump in there to get her."

Veliz said he couldn't reach the woman.

"By the time I was jumping in, she was pretty much, like she couldn't fight any more, and she was starting to sink a bit and that's when I jumped in. I realized she really needed help, she was going to drown for real," he said. "By the time I got to her, she was too deep and I tried to dive under as far as I could but you couldn't see anything under there, all I could see was green."

Veliz said he learned Monday that she'd died.

"I know that I did what I could but I wish of course I could have been a little bit faster and maybe we would be having a different type of discussion right now," he said.

What led to her falling overboard and the amount of time she spent in the river remains unclear. Miami Police are investigating.

This is a developing story. Check back with NBC6 for updates.

Sunshine Coast community helps Ross Day after houseboat sinks in Maroochy River

Inside the houseboat Bad Habits, inundated with water, with a couch floating in foreground

A 75-year-old man who says he lost his life savings in a houseboat which capsized in the Maroochy River is being supported by fundraising efforts from the Sunshine Coast community.

Meanwhile, Maritime Safety Queensland says it is working with the new owner – who bought the vessel Bad Habits after it sank in February – to have it salvaged in a "suitable time frame".

Pensioner Ross Day said he and a friend had to be rescued by police after Bad Habits began listing in heavy rain on February 16.

Ross Day holds a piece of his houseboat which has broken off

He said attempts to refloat the uninsured craft failed.

It took on more water to the point the contents were destroyed or severely damaged.

Bad Habits remains on the bottom of the Maroochy River, still partially visible from busy Bradman Avenue, while Mr Day has been sleeping in various locations, including the floor of a friend's factory.

"By having the houseboat, the idea was that I had somewhere I could live and afford to feed myself, but unfortunately it all came undone," Mr Day said.

"I went through a divorce, the mortgage was paid out and I didn't have enough money to buy anywhere around here.

Bad Habits submerged a short distance from the banks of the Maroochy River.

He said he had tried to "think outside the square".

"There's no rent to pay on a houseboat and it was a good idea at the time," he said.

"When that rain came, my life turned upside-down."

Mr Day said he had since been supported by several members of the community, including the Lapham family, who live on Bradman Avenue.

Helping hands

James Lapham crossed the road to console a distraught Mr Day after he was rescued, later bought him a meal, helped salvage belongings from the houseboat, and began a crowdfunding campaign.

"He was in tears, slumped over … he'd lost everything," said Mr Lapham, who had not met Mr Day until the incident.

"I rang my son Joshua and an employee and we went over there for two days and pulled out all his personal stuff and anything he could sell to recoup some money.

Joshua Lapham shoulder-deep in water with a spanner near the houseboat motor

"We were exhausted after two days, but I'm not a hero, just a fella that cares.

"Helping another human being when they're in need is not a bad thing is it?"

While the crowdfunding campaign has so far received a modest response, Mr Lapham's efforts to drew attention to the cause have helped.

A neighbouring boat owner agreed to purchase the stricken vessel for an amount believed to be $20,000, allowing Mr Day to investigate purchasing a van or other form of temporary shelter.

Salvage prospects

It remains to be seen if Bad Habits can be refloated, having reportedly sustained further damage since it sank.

But Mr Lapham was confident it could be saved.

"They could raise it, put a jack under the front, pump the tanks out, get the last out and it'll rise," Mr Lapham said.

A scene of devastation inside the sunken houseboat, including a desk of drawers

"It's fixable but the problem is to get it out the water and transport it somewhere where it can be fixed was too much for Ross to afford," Mr Lapham said.

"It might be $50,000 or $60,000 to get out and crane it back in again."

Maritime Safety Queensland general manager Kell Dillon said his organisation was monitoring the situation and that refloating Bad Habits would likely require "specialist salvage capability" and availability of experienced professionals.

"We are working with the new owner to have it removed in a suitable time frame," Mr Dillon said.

"It is important that the vessel is removed with due regard to safety and minimal risk to the marine environment."

He said his organisation had no findings as yet specific to Bad Habits but owners were advised to regularly monitor and inspect their vessels and maintain them in a watertight and seaworthy condition.

"This is particularly the case when high winds, tides or rainfall are expected," he said.

He said owners should regularly attend vessels to ensure they were securely anchored, ensure they were lit in accordance with regulations, and that registration numbers were clearly displayed.

Historic 1930 Motor Yacht Sinks In Miami

As the sun came up over the Miami River on Saturday, April 25th 2009; what was once a Grand old Motor Yacht was laying on the bottom after taking on water earlier in the week and sinking in her berth. The 121' Nevins currently named Lovely Lady was originally named Tara ; commissioned by Pierson to be built at New York's famous Nevins yard (the largest yacht ever built at Nevins), purchased by retired Admiral E. Townsend Irvin (friends of President Dwight D. and Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower) U.S. Navy War Commission and Commodore of prestigious New York Yacht Club. The yacht was the flagship of the club. In 1942, when the United States entered World War II, he donated the vessel to "the cause" as wood boats served as ideal minesweepers.

When the war ended, Tara was sold to the Remington-Rand Corporation (later Sperry-Rand) and again, she hosted many notables and witnessed historic events. Sperry-Rand became the backer and sole distributor for the newly formed Univac Company and many of the associations that led the way to the formation and development of the modern computer were born aboard this vessel. Tara's logs show that she crossed the Atlantic a number of times.

However, it wasn't until 1958, when Tara was renamed Lovely Lady when she was sold to California entrepreneurs who leased the vessel to movies and television producers, when she reached the height of her recognition. Starting in 1958, she had a brief appearance in Billy Wilder's "Some Like it Hot", starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. She appeared in many Television shows, and thirty years of films, the last being Mel Gibson's "Tequila Sunrise" in 1988. In the 1990's, she served as a private charter yacht in California, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Many Hollywood notables chartered her for private parties, including Alfred Hitchcock, Joan Caulfield, and Alan Hale. Currently, a screenplay is being written with regard to the vessels intriguing encounters, including being the scene of the passing of a New York socialite, and Ms. Monroe is reported to have stayed aboard her during the filming of "Some Like it Hot". In an attempt to learn more about the yacht; a YouTube clip taken from an episode of Batman in the 1960's was discovered. In this amusing video clip Batman and Robin are aboard the "Bat Copter" flying over the Ocean. About half way through the video you will see several close-up shots of what is believed to be the Lovely Lady underway. Make sure you watch the entire clip as you will learn more about how to ward off aggressive shark attacks...very educational and informative! Watch Here.

TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale was awarded the daunting task of salvaging this vessel to enable the fuel to be pumped from her tanks. Commercial divers with surface supplied air and dry suits went to work that morning in the murky waters of the Miami River with the task of patching each of the through hull fittings, port lights, hatches and other suspect areas of the hull. After patching was complete dewatering pumps were used to pump the vessel out allowing environmental crews to board the boat and begin pumping the fuel from each of the vessels tanks using a vacuum truck. TowBoatU.S. Ft Lauderdale's Salvage Master Chris Stevens stated "Most of the boats that we have salvaged over the 13 years that I have worked for the company have been constructed of fiberglass, aluminum or steel. Planked wooden hulls bring about a whole new set of challenges because there are so many places the hull could be compromised. We came prepared for this challenge with twice the number pumps that we would have needed for a fiberglass yacht salvage of similar size. We were successful but it took 2 gas pumps and one diesel dewatering pump to keep the water level steady once the boat was essentially pumped out."

Lovely Lady's owner has spent over a decade dedicated to this restoration. He discovered the yacht in Grand Cayman where the previous owner had left her; overcoming a litany of obstacles including possible demolition using explosives by the holding company for the marina in Grand Cayman and her eventual transit back to Miami Florida in 1999 which was interrupted by a stop in Cuba due to Hurricane Irene's unexpected track change. Since her arrival in Miami, the owner reports that the decks and superstructures have been rebuilt as well as the main engines and generators. A new electrical system has been added to compliment the generators. Much of the boats structural hull framing has also been replaced representing hundreds of man hours and considerable material costs. The next step in the process would have been to haul her out on a railway and complete the framing and hull planking project to insure her seaworthiness for years to come. Her tragic sinking and ever decreasing options for boatyards that have the capability of hauling a vessel of her size and vintage have left the owner in a difficult position. If you would like to learn more about the Lovely Lady please contact the owner at [email protected]

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

yacht sinks in miami river

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

yacht sinks in miami river

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

yacht sinks in miami river

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

yacht sinks in miami river

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

yacht sinks in miami river

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

yacht sinks in miami river

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

yacht sinks in miami river

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
