Our bareboat charter yacht fleet is based in the port of Opua at the heart of the Bay of Islands, New Zealand's premier cruising destination.  Although bareboat (sail yourself) charters are our primary focus, our yachts are also available with a skipper or cook.

Cruising Area

The area in which our boats are licensed for bareboat charter extends from Cape Karikari, 60 miles north of the Bay of Islands to Cape Colville in the south. This is 170 miles of the best sailing that New Zealand has to offer.

Kim and Greta of Fairwind Charters have over 30 years of experience in the yacht charter industry and we know this area like we know our own home - because this is our home! We would love to share it with you.

Bay of Islands Yacht Charters Ltd ~ New Zealand

Bareboat charter sailing vessel "Sensation" is a spacious and well set up Farr 1020 34ft sailing yacht. The boat was designed and built in New Zealand and is set up for cruising comfort and performance. 

Sensation is currently the only boat that we have for bareboat (private - sail yourself) charter in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand so you can expect personal attention when you book your bareboat sailing charter with us. The yacht is under current New Zealand MSA Certification. 

Well suited to two couples or a family (Max 4 Adults) our sail boat has two double and two single berths (one with a high lee cloth).  There is one separate cabin.  Sensation has a well equipped galley with fridge, freezer, oven and complimentary pantry items.  There is a hot water shower off the stern of the yacht.

To charter (hire) our yacht well-rounded sailing experience and familiarity with sailboats and/or satisfactory completion of recognized boating courses is helpful.  Practical knowledge and experience in piloting and anchoring procedures are essential.

A yacht charter in the beautiful, Bay of Islands, can be delightful. The Bay of Islands maritime park is comprised of 144 islands, secluded bays, untouched coastline and natural harbors. The cool waters are abundant with sea life including kingfish, marlin, dolphins and seals. You can even rummage for clams, mussels and shellfish for your evening meal. Relax and take in the sights with a complimentary tea or coffee as we cruise past some of the 144 islands that make up the Bay of Islands. We select a bay that is sheltered from the prevailing weather conditions and drop anchor. From here we will prepare your kiwi BBQ lunch onboard while you step ashore to explore. If you are feeling adventurous, you may want to hike to the nearest viewpoint, or we have snorkelling gear and paddleboards available for your use. If you simply want to relax, we have plenty of lounging areas onboard for you to take full advantage of or you may want to pick a quiet spot on the beach. Finally, we heave the anchor and sail back to Paihia.

Experience awesome sailing and the fantastic Bay of Islands all in one super day. Our sailing tour is exciting, funny and informal. We provide tasty morning snacks, heaps of sailing, a unique island stopover, masks & snorkels, hot outside showers and our yummy fresh sandwich lunch. Our tasty snacks and sandwich lunch are made fresh on board each day. They include a variety of colourful and mouth-watering local produce. If you’re a vegetarian or prefer gluten-free, please let us know. It’s not a problem!

Marine life including penguins, seabirds and others are often plentiful and frequently sighted in playful groups. Our friendly crew will help you sail the boat or you can simply relax and enjoy. We depart from Paihia daily at 10:00 am (Russell transfers included). Return around 4:00 pm. The cost per Adult is $175 … all activities and yummy fresh lunch included!

Your day includes heaps of fantastic sailing on our 65 foot ocean going yacht, plenty of sheltered seating, changing rooms and clean toilets. Please note that all day sailing adventures are barefoot and are smoking/vaping and alcohol free. Please bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a camera. Surf fishermen landing striped bass off Ocean County's beaches

There hasn't been too much development in the spring striped bass run over the course of this week. In other words, it's trotting along.

Fishermen had a pretty slow bite in the Raritan Bay. Capt. Alan Lee's Mushin charter boat was able to get several bass to hit on the troll on Sunday. That had followed a couple days of wind that had stirred up the coastal waters. The boat was back out Tuesday and landed two keepers after a full day on the bay.

Mike Pento at Giglio's Tackle in Sea Bright said the kayak fishermen are marking bass in the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers but the fish are not jumping in the boat, so to say. He also said there is a lack of bunker in the rivers. The full moon is next Tuesday and perhaps that could stir the fish up. As of now, fishermen really need to put the time in.

Surf fishermen along the Ocean County beaches and barrier islands are catching some bass in the surf on clams, mostly. There are blitzes yet, as its just been a singular fish here and there to speak of. But fish are out nosing around in the troughs.

Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park had a fishermen report directly from the beach. The angler was Wayne Kuehler who sent the shop a photo of the 30-inch bass he caught dunking clams. That was on Tuesday. The next day and further south, Jingle's Bait & Tackle in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island weighed in Pat Gallen's 8-pound striper he caught off the beach in Surf City using salted clam.

The black drum are "keeping everyone on their toes" in Barnegat Bay, according to Grumpy's, thought the initial drum madness seems to have tapered off, there are still quite a few around. The shop last's reported drum catch was on Wednesday.

The boats fishing the wrecks and rock piles for spring blackfish had fairly good action. The Big Mohawk party boat was out a couple of times this week and picked away just about everywhere they went with shorts and keepers mixed in. There were anglers who managed to catch their daily bag limit of four tog and a few others that came close to it.

The great white sharks are swimming up the coast. The first Ocearch-tagged white shark to reach this latitude was a 13 footer nicknamed Mahone. That shark never came inshore though, taking a route offshore of the canyons. It was up by New England as of Thursday, but others sharks are not too far behind and could be in Jersey waters soon.
