Antigua and Barbuda to auction off $81m yacht ‘owned by Russian oligarch’
Andrey Guryev, who has been put under UK government sanctions, claims he is not owner of Alfa Nero
An $81m (£67m) superyacht said to be owned by the sanctioned Russian oligarch Andrey Guryev is to be auctioned off by the government of Antigua and Barbuda, which claims the vessel has been abandoned in the Caribbean since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.
The government of Antigua and Barbuda on Monday warned the owner of the Alfa Nero superyacht that they had 10 days to claim the vessel or it would be sold to the highest bidder.
The information minister, Melford Nicholas, said Alfa Nero had been abandoned in Falmouth harbour in Antigua since February 2022 and the government was “trying to prevent a future hazard since the luxury vessel is not being maintained by its owner”.
In a statement the office of the prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda said: “A notice to the newspapers and other media will be published for a period of 10 days, notifying the sale of the Alfa Nero vessel in order to satisfy the requirements under the law for a forced sale. If the owner fails to claim the vessel within that time period, the government of Antigua and Barbuda will sell it to the highest bidder.”
Guryev, 62, who made a $10bn fortune from the Russian fertiliser company PhosAgro, is the owner of Alfa Nero according to the US government, which imposed sanctions on him last year. The US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said it had “identified Alfa Nero, a Cayman islands flagged yacht that AG Guryev reportedly bought for $120m in 2014, as blocked property of AG Guryev”.
The yacht, which features a 12-metre infinity pool, a Jacuzzi, a spa, a beauty room and a helipad, has been used by Guryev’s family, including his son (also Andrey) and his son’s wife, Valeria, who studied at the London College of Fashion and once reportedly stated on Instagram that she was “too pretty for work”. Like many yachts, it is owned via an opaque offshore structure, and Guryev has denied being the owner.
Guryev, who was subjected to UK government sanctions in April 2022 , is also, according to the OFAC, the owner of London’s largest private residence: the 25-bedroom £50m Highgate mansion Witanhurst.
The property is officially owned via Boradge Ltd, a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands. Guryev’s London-based lawyers have said “Mr Guryev does not own Witanhurst”, without providing further details. Guryev’s spokesperson has previously told the New Yorker that he was a beneficiary of a trust owning the property but not the legal owner.
Last year Gibraltar auctioned off the £65m superyacht Axioma owned by the sanctioned steel billionaire Dmitry Pumpyansky. The sale of Axioma attracted controversy because it is being sold not for the benefit of the Ukrainian people but for a US investment bank, JP Morgan, which claims Pumpyansky owes it more than €20.5m (£17m).
Pumpyansky was until March of 2022 the owner and chairman of the steel pipe manufacturer OAO TMK, a supplier to the Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom. The UK said the billionaire, who it said had built up an estimated £1.84bn fortune, was one of the oligarchs “closest to Putin” .

Billionaire Eric Schmidt just paid $68 million for a Russian oligarch’s sanctioned superyacht that features a helipad and baby grand piano
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt bought the Alfa Nero superyacht that was ditched in Antigua in March 2022 after Russian troops invaded Ukraine.
The billionaire “won the auction this morning in a fully transparent process,” buying the vessel for $67.6 million, according to Sir Ronald Sanders, Antigua’s ambassador to the US.
The 267-foot vessel, complete with a baby grand piano and a swimming pool that turns into a helipad, was abandoned in Antigua’s Falmouth Harbour after the US Treasury sanctioned Russian fertilizer billionaire Andrey Guryev. The department last year said he bought the Alfa Nero in 2014 for $120 million — which he denies.
Schmidt’s foundation didn’t respond to a request for comment.
The Alfa Nero was auctioned Friday even after Guryev’s daughter filed a last-minute injunction claiming the yacht was hers, Antigua Port Manager Darwin Telemaque said in an interview.
Some of the proceeds will cover maintenance and other bills that the Alfa Nero has piled up while in the harbor, with crew expenses alone running $112,000 a month. Telemaque said the sale price would cover “all liabilities.”
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the US and its allies have imposed sanctions on many of the country’s wealthiest people, causing more than two dozen superyachts worth about $4 billion to be frozen in ports around the world.
Schmidt, who served as Google’s chief executive for about a decade, has an estimated net worth of $25 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Two years ago he was named chair of the Broad Institute, a research organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Iconic yachts: On board Oceanco's striking 81m superyacht Alfa Nero
Big, black and beautiful, the 81.27 metre Oceanco motor yacht Alfa Nero makes an incredibly powerful impression.
Although she is so large, the secret feature of Alfa Nero is that she is definitely not ‘high volume’ in the sense of trying to cram in every possible cubic metre of accommodation like a modern cruise ship.
On the contrary, the first impression you receive on stepping aboard is of wide-open decks leading into big uncrowded rooms. The exterior and layout designers Nuvolari Lenard clearly agree with the notion that the ultimate luxury afloat is open space. In fact, with four decks to play with and only twelve guests to accommodate, they could afford to be exceptionally generous in their use of space.
The most spectacular visual trick is the first one you see: a sizeable swimming pool with a built-in current and an ‘infinity’ aft side where the water overflows across a large sloping sheet of glass to create a waterfall effect.
This is particularly effective at night when both the pool and the waterfall are under-lit and the movement of the water creates an ever-changing light show. The pool is set in a wide expanse of open deck which extends well aft from the superstructure, creating a lido which can equally well serve as a party deck.
Having been one of the first designers to explore the possibilities of art deco afloat, Alberto Pinto has moved forward to the even more surprising era of pop art with the work of Roy Lichtenstein providing the inspiration.
In addition to a number of Lichtenstein prints in his famous comic-strip style, Alberto Pinto has managed to create an entire decor based on them with zigs-zags of woodwork or kid leather, bold stripes of flooring, swirling patterns on upholstery, bright primary colours for lacquered woodwork, or high-gloss zebrano with its vibrant stripey grain.
Here you will find no gracious oak-panelled rooms, nor any varnished teak capping rails – all is new and modern.
This is a big vessel with a big crew, capable of giving unrivalled standards of comfort and service to a fortunate few. The overall impression is of an incredibly spacious yacht with large, uncrowded guest areas and generous cabins, while exceptional use has been made of the exterior decks. Looking up at Alfa Nero ’s impressive outline, you might wonder what has become of pretty white yachts.

Time Is Running Out for the Mystery Owner of This Abandoned Superyacht, Which Might Soon Go to Auction
Lawyers for the suspected owner are denying that he owns it, and officials say they might soon be forced to sell it..
If you’ve got some deep pockets and a yearning for a superyacht, you may want to head to the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean. Bloomberg reports that a 267-foot superyacht has been abandoned at a dock in the island nation. It’s racking up dock fees and the government says if it isn’t claimed soon, it’s going to auction the ship.
For the last 18 months, the Alfa Nero has sat moored in Falmouth Harbour , but, this week, an Antiguan official said that whoever owns the yacht is running out of time to claim it. If no one does by Friday, it’s going up for sale, the official told Bloomberg .
Like other superyachts around the world that have been seized in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it’s been racking up fees. The government has been footing the bill for everything from food for the crew to fuel, totaling more than half a million dollars. While it’s sat, mystery has surrounded the Alfa Nero, as no one seems to know who the yacht belongs to.
In a release by the Antigua and Barbuda government, Russian billionaire Andrey Guryev is purportedly listed as the yacht’s owner. But according to his lawyers in London, the yacht doesn’t belong to him. From Bloomberg :
“As we have informed the Antiguan authorities Mr. Guryev neither owns nor controls the Alfa Nero and has simply used the vessel from time to time under commercial charter since 2014,” his legal representative wrote in reply to questions from Bloomberg.
If it does belong to Guryev, it would make sense that he would deny ownership. Like other Russian oligarchs, Guryev has been facing sanctions since the start of the Russian invasion. But with a net worth of over $10 billion, he’s one of the few Russian billionaires that hasn’t taken a huge financial hit due to the invasion.
Whoever owns the Alfa Nero better act fast. Otherwise, t his could be someone’s chance to snag a deal on a yacht that has a helipad that doubles as an infinity pool and a hair salon. So if you’re the yacht’s owner and you’re reading this, you might want to book a flight to the Caribbean ASAP .
Billionaire oligarch who owns the Alfa Nero also allegedly owns a $270 million superyacht that lies abandoned in Montenegro – So advanced is the vessel that it has 310 miles of cables, a 36-tonne battery pack that lets it sail as quietly as a Tesla, massive satellite dishes and more.

Delivered in 2007 by Oceanco, Alfa Nero features a striking exterior by Nuvolari Lenard and interior styling by Alberto Pinto that together have landed the yacht a number of awards. The beautiful behemoth notably features six staterooms, accommodation for 28 crew, a hydraulically operated pool and a large helipad aft. Alfa Nero was sold in 2011 to its current owner with an asking price of $115 million, according to Marine Industry News . The Guardian has previously reported that the yacht is linked to the Russian oligarch (and Putin ally) Andrey Guryev.
The Antigua and Barbuda government reportedly consulted with the US authorities prior to taking the action. During a media briefing, Information Minister Melford Nicholas told reporters that any proceeds from the sale of Alfa Nero would remain in the Antiguan government’s hands, but the US could request access to the funds in the future.

Gustavia Harbor in St. Barths
I make it an annual tradition to visit St. Barths during the holidays, and this year the island is looking the best it has in many years. Lush green landscapes, crystal clear and very warm waters, clean beaches, and famed resorts opening with stunning new additions. Locals tell me the hurricane that devastated the island ultimately led to much-needed improvements with infrastructure, and magically the island has turned green again.

Antigua and Barbuda is preparing to auction off an 'abandoned' $81 million superyacht linked to a Russian oligarch, reports say
- An $81 million superyacht linked to a Russian oligarch is reportedly set to be auctioned off.
- The 81.2-meter Alfa Nero has been linked to Russian chemicals magnate Andrey Guryev.
- An Antigua and Barbuda government minister reportedly said the "abandoned" yacht risks becoming a "hazard."
An $81 million superyacht linked to a Russian oligarch is set to be auctioned off by the Antigua and Barbuda government, according to multiple reports .
The Alfa Nero was "abandoned" in Falmouth Harbour, Antigua, in February 2022, the month Russia invaded Ukraine, and risks becoming a "hazard" because it's not being maintained, information minister Melford Nicholas was reported as saying.
The US Department of the Treasury has linked the Alfa Nero to Andrey Guryev , a Russian oligarch who the department says is a "close associate" of President Vladimir Putin. Guryev was sanctioned by the US in August, by the UK in April, and by the EU in March 2022.

Guryev is one of Russia's wealthiest individuals with a net worth of $10.1 billion, according to Bloomberg. He founded PhosAgro, a leading Russian chemical company, per the Treasury department.
The 81.2-meter Alfa Nero was built by Oceanco and can accommodate 12 guests in six staterooms and 28 crew, according to Boat International . The yacht features a swimming pool and gym, among other amenities, per photos published by Boat International.
The Antigua and Barbuda government said the Alfa Nero will be auctioned off if its owner doesn't claim it within 10 days of sale notices being placed in the media, according to the reports.
The Antigua and Barbuda government didn't respond to Insider's request for comment.
The Guardian reported that Guryev has denied being the owner of the Alfa Nero. Insider was unable to reach Guryev for comment.
The Treasury department said in August that the Alfa Nero was a "blocked property" of Guryev's, and that he reportedly bought the yacht for $120 million in 2014.
Guryev served in the Russian government until 2013, per the Treasury department. The UK described Guryev as an "oligarch" when it sanctioned him in April.

Antigua & Barbuda PM aims for April launch of LIAT (2020)
Ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt wins $67.6M superyacht Alfa Nero after vessel seized from Russian
- Eric Schmidt splashed the cash at an auction this month to land one of the most sought after yachts in the world
- Named Alfa Nero, the 267ft vessel boasts a swimming pool that can turn into a helipad, and was bought by Schmidt for $67.6 million
- It was previously owned by fertilizer magnate and Putin-crony Andrey Guryev before he was slapped with sanctions by the US Treasury
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt won a lucrative auction in Antigua to buy a $67.6 million superyacht previously owned by a Russian oligarch.
Schmidt, 68, snapped up the coveted vessel Alfa Nero after it was seized from fertilizer mogul Andrey Guryev last year following the Russian invasion of Ukraine .
The massive ship, which has been languishing in the Caribbean island since the start of the conflict, is among the most luxurious in the world, and boasts the first-ever swimming pool that can turn into a helipad.
It was also notably built by Oceanco, the same company that constructed the $500 million superyacht recently enjoyed by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez .
Built in 2007, the 267 foot vessel was initially listed for sale in 2009 for a titanic price tag of $190 million.
The ship can host 12 guests and up to 26 crewmembers, and is fitted with amenities appropriate for a billionaire.
The master bedroom fills the entire front of the top deck, offering panoramic ocean views while the inside is decked out in lavish designs.
Inside the yacht, each room is said to have a separate, coordinated design. A saloon bar on the upper deck is palatial, while the main deck saloon boasts a more modern look.
A private gym with 180 degree views is also on the top floor, and a lower deck also has a health and beauty spa.
The Alfa Nero was described by its manufacturer Oceanco as 'one of the world's most iconic and highly awarded yachts'.
Schmidt bought the boat after it was left abandoned in Antigua by Guryev last year following sanctions by the US Treasury.
US officials claimed Guryev, who owns one of the largest fertilizer producer companies in the world and has close ties to Vladimir Putin, bought the yacht in 2014.
The auction was hosted by the government of Antigua and Barbuda, which said on June 16 that Schmidt won in a 'fully transparent process'.
In a strange move, an Antiguan port official told Bloomberg News that Guryev's daughter filed a last-minute injunction, claiming she was the owner of the yacht.
Guryev has an estimated net worth of around $4.8 billion, and Schmidt's fortune is valued at over $20 billion.

The yacht was notably made by the same company that built another vessel to capture headlines in recent times.
Former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos splashed the cash on a new $500 million megayacht this year called Koru.
It is one of the tallest and longest ships in the world, at 417 feet in length.
Bezos and his glamorous fiancé Lauren Sanchez were recently spotted sharing a kiss on the expansive deck .
The Koru is so massive it is also joined on its voyages by a second, $75 million support yacht called the 'Aboena'.
It floats nearby to help the billionaire live a life of luxury, hosting his selection of supercars, motorbikes, smaller boats, jet skis and helicopters.
