History of Prout

Prout Catamarans, established in 1954 by Francis and Roland Prout in Canvey Island, Essex, UK, started as a small family-run business. Initially focusing on folding canoes, the Prout brothers soon shifted their focus to catamarans, which quickly became their signature craft. Their innovative designs and quality craftsmanship paved the way for a range of successful models, including the Quest and Ranger series.During the 1970s and 1980s, Prout Catamarans gained an international reputation, with over 4,300 catamarans constructed, making them one of the world's leading manufacturers of cruising catamarans. The success of these designs was attributed to their blend of performance, safety, and comfort. Their models, such as the Prout Snowgoose 37, became iconic, widely admired for their seaworthiness and practicality for long-distance cruising.Despite their industry acclaim, the company experienced financial difficulties in the late 1990s, ultimately leading to the company’s closure in 2001. Though Prout Catamarans no longer operates as it once did, the legacy of their innovative and durable designs continues to influence modern catamaran construction. The Prout 38 was launched in 1998 to widespread acclaim. The second of their new generation designs, following in the wake of the highly successful Prout 46, the 38 is designed to be as comfortable cruising the muddy creeks of the East Coast as she is crossing oceans to distant tropical distinctions. 

The 38 is a category "A" ocean cruiser, engineered for long distance voyaging and easy single-handed sailing, without having to leave the cockpit. The elegant profile conceals a luxurious interior which combines beautiful modern styling with traditional Prout craftmanship.

The interior boasts three double cabins, spacious head with sit down shower to port (owner's suite) large galley, sumptuous main salon which affords superb panoramic views, and optional ensuite head & shower to starboard. 

With space, stability, shoal draft, and unparalleled maneuverability the Prout 38 is a superb modern ocean voyager, the choice of the discerning cruising sailor.

Manufacturer Provided Description

The Prout 38 features a "high volume" hull form that provides increased load carrying; smoother, more comfortable seakeeping; and a dramatic improvement in performance. The once familiar Prout nacelle has been succeeded by this mini version with an arched bridgedeck; this example of "monocoque" engineering is at the heart of the 38 and creates massive structural integrity throughout the boat. The mini nacelle acts as a longitudinal stiffener while the high clearance and arching of the bridgedeck gives added strength and deflects solid water contact with great efficiency. Flatter underwater hull sections reduce drag and minimize stern wash for blistering offwind performance. Low aspect ratio NACRA-profiled keels and elliptical rudder profiles give the Prout 38 tremendous lift for real yacht-like performance upwind with the power to support the taller, more efficient rig. Prout's designers have managed to reduce weight in the bow and transom of the hulls to cut down pitching and improve overall stability and comfort on board. And with both a sail area - displacement ratio of around 20:1 and an advanced double diamond rig, the Prout 38 will deliver rocket ship passage making in breezes as well as superb light-weather performance. And when the wind dies away completely, the muted throb and reassurance of her twin Volvo 30 hp fresh water-cooled diesels will oversee her safe return to port. On deck, the elegant Prout 38 provides levels of comfort and security that demonstrate Prout's 45 year record at the forefront of catamaran building. Access to the sumptuous main saloon is through a huge bi-fold door from the cockpit. In fine weather or in harbor, this can be left open to give an amazing open plan feeling to the boat with excellent light down below. Generous relaxing and dining areas are provided in the saloon as well as a truly ergonomic navigation and electronics station - all with a panoramic view of the outside world. Prout's highest standards of styling and decor are of course much in evidence, in the interests of achieving value for money, the Prout 38 will conform to a more "standard" accommodation layout than her predecessors. This comprises two enormous double cabins with luxury size berths and ensuite facilities together with a third cozy double or twin berth cabin. With a sculptured and luxuriously appointed bathroom, the Prout 38 offers excellent and versatile accommodation for long or short term voyaging, or for sailing with guests.

Brand: Prout 38 Manta

The Prout family started building boats in the 1950 through 2002 in Exeter UK, leading the way with design innovations, rugged construction and blue water safety. A major contributor to the popularity of cruising catamarans today.

The Prout Manta version was built in Richards Bay, South Africa and is basically the same catamaran as the 39 ft Escale model also from Prout. The Manta at 38 ft has a slightly shorter “sugar scoop” than the Escale model. They built around 35 of them, good quality builds.

The “Reputation of Quality” of the Prout catamaran – It’s a very long list but here are a few highlights:

1. Proven Ocean Crossing Catamaran – Sturdy, Seaworthy, and Affordable. 100+ circumnavigations. 2. Mast is stepped further AFT with an excellent sail plan for short- handed sailing and balance 3. Flat Keels and Narrow Beam for standard berths, easy haul outs and beaching. 4. Low Profile = Low Windage 5. “Solidly Built”, strong, seaworthy and cosey down below. 6. Solid forward Bridge deck (no nets) making a very rigid and sturdy boat with a large solid foredeck for working, playing and lounging.
