The Great RC Ocean Race

The great rc ocean race returns april 20, 2024.

This is “the most challenging radio-controlled sailboat race on the planet.™”  The 3 nautical mile circumnavigation of beautiful Protection Island in Nanaimo B.C. takes the racers from the start at the world famous Dinghy Dock Pub, out past the log booms into the wild open Salish Sea where they face currents, waves and wind shifts. There are rocks to dodge, tide lines to miss all the while trying to stay ahead, or catch some of the fastest and toughest RC boats and skippers anywhere. At the top end of the island is the “great equalizer”, the gap between Protection Island and Newcastle Island marine park. There anything can happen as the wind will surely change and the currents can help or hurt the racers greatly.  Getting there first is often a disadvantage, as boats can be stalled in strong current while the entire fleet passes.

Sometimes we go clockwise around the island, sometimes counter-clockwise.  Make sure you attend the skippers meeting so you can find out!

The race is open to all radio-controlled sailboats, and is quickly becoming a proving ground for new designs and one-design boats as well.  There are usually two divisions, one for RC Lasers and one “run what you brung” open class division.  Bring 5 boats (eg. IOM’s, DF 95’s) and you can have your own division!  Or be the first to sail a DF 65 around the island!

Mark your calendar and make this the one race you just have to try.  The friendliness and comradery of the racers and hosts make this a race that you will get hooked on.

South Island Dragon Boat Festival

About the Festival | 2023 Results | Registration | Accommodations | Volunteers | Paddlers’ Village | Festival Cancellation/Refund Policy

The 21st Nanaimo Festival is relocating to Victoria’s Gorge Waterway over the 13-14 July weekend for the 2024 year.  Moving from Nanaimo is unexpected, but your festival hosts and production team are providing the same great weekend of racing, team amenities and paddler fun–with no increase to registration fees. Indeed, we’ve been able to provide fee reductions for breast cancer survivor teams in recognition of their 20+ years of dedication to this fun annual festival (see below). The 2024 Nanaimo Festival is running this year as the “ South Island Dragon Boat Festival .” For the 2024 race season, we’ve relocated to Victoria’s Gorge Waterway, part of BC’s capital city’s harbour network. We’ve arranged for lots of free parking, a beautiful paddler’s village, food vendors, beer garden, local hotels for visitors, door-to-door harbour ferry service to-and-from the race site from Victoria’s inner harbour…and a full weekend of medal-winning 500m racing.

Here’s what hasn’t changed.  The dates are the same; and the same festival race officials and race production team who’ve hosted the Nanaimo festival for more than ten years are waiting to greet you. And we haven’t forgotten Nanaimo Festival favourites, the Breast Cancer Challenge races, and the end-of-weekend Guts-and-Glory Championship, an event we make available to every team that wants to participate.

Our 2024 Victoria-based races feature a full two-day 500m festival, and guarantees a minimum of 4 races for everyone, and includes open-access 1500m Guts-and-Glory championship races and a Sunday Survivor Challenge for survivor teams. The weekend has broad western representation, with teams from BC’s lower mainland; from Alberta, including Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge; from Oregon and Washington State; and from Vancouver Island.

For visitors to the island, we’ve sourced and obtained discounts for local accommodations, as well as partnering arrangements with Victoria teams to help you with tent amenities and tips and tricks to enjoy the south island area. For island teams, we know you’ll enjoy the event and recognize the same friends you’ve met at the start and finish lines for many years.  Even better, we’ve added new options for island teams…

NEW:  Sunday-only options for Vancouver Island mixed, women’s and survivor teams.  The 2-day South Island Festival is making its second race day available to mid- and north-island teams who want to participate at a local 1-day event planned for Saturday in Nanaimo. This option is being offered courtesy of the Nanaimo Paddling Centre and FGPC in recognition of the Nanaimo community’s effort to help rebuild the Nanaimo festival for 2025 and the years to come. The Sunday-only choice provides mid and north island teams with an opportunity to join South Island Festival’s visiting teams for a final day of racing on Sunday in Victoria if they choose.

AND… We’ve considered island survivor teams, too. Island-based survivor teams who choose to attend Nanaimo’s one-day Saturday event can join with the South Island Festival’s survivor teams on Sunday, free of charge. This option allows mid- and north-island survivor teams to join full-weekend survivor teams in Victoria on Sunday for the final day of racing, including 500m women’s heats and participation in Sunday’s Survivor Challenge. See below for details.

AND… We’ve extended the South Island Festival early-bird deadline to Monday 22 April. See below for registration details.

VIDEO: Racers and watchers all smiles at 2023 Nanaimo Silly Boats

NANAIMO — Make it three in a row for Island Red Cedar Construction Ltd.

The back-to-back defending champions made in three in a row as their blazing red five-man boat powered through the competition, blitzing the course in a time of one minute and 30 seconds in the final at Swy-a-lana Lagoon on Sunday, July 16.

Sean Smith, owner of Island Red Cedar told NanaimoNewsNOW before the race they weren’t being weighed down by expectations of another win.

“I guess pressure makes diamonds doesn’t it, may be we’re a diamond in the rough perhaps. Last year we went with four (paddlers), this year we’re going with five. We’re a little lighter, we’re a little younger, we’re hungry.”

nanaimo sailboat race

Hungry indeed.

Smith and his team made no mistakes in either of their two races, using a refined boat which had already won two straight races.

“We’ve gone with a tiller for our change this time, last time our turn around the buoy was less than elegant so we’re hoping to steer us to success,” Smith added.

Island Red Cedar comfortably cruised through their heat, which included NanaimoNewsNOW /Island Radio’s entry of “Indiana Gordie and the Radio Dial of Destiny”, despite taking on some water from spray guns on board the “Gordie”.

nanaimo sailboat race

Other top performers included Coast Hotels with a bed-inspired design and Rotary Nanaimo/Lantzville who won the day’s opening race with a boat which included a bike.

“It’s not a bicycle, it’s a paddlewheel. It’s a paddlewheel,” Doug, a Rotarian on the build crew joked. “We may have used a few bicycle parts but it is a paddle wheel and it’s engineered to win this year.”

Different entries may not have crossed the finish line first, but arguably had the most fun.

Nanaimo Youth 20/20 Can Project were all laughs even as their entry capsized within seconds of the start. Real Canadian Superstore also had some initial struggles however managed to keep it together to finish their heat.

nanaimo sailboat race

The event was all in support of the Nanaimo Child Development Centre and their programming in the region through the year.

The CDC’s Michelle Kocourek said before the event the money raised is critical.

‘“Every department and service that we have is touched by fund-raised money in some way, and some only by fund-raised money. Our child and youth development summer camp is completely funded by fund-raised money.”

The Aggressive Salmon raceboats, both Tub #668 (pictured) and Tub #659, have been on display in Nanaimo's cruiseship terminal for Crystal Serenity, Celebrity Infinity and Star Princess cruise ships that arrived this summer and fall. Lots of photos featuring our boat on the Nanaimo Port Authority's website.  http://cruise.npa.ca/en/gallery/

Archived News

On a warm morning in July 1967, Nanaimo's harbour was the scene of quite a marine spectacle. Over two-hundred 'bathtub boats' in every imaginable configuration were poised to race across the Straight of Georgia and onto Kitsilano Beach in Vancouver for the first time.

Things have changed since then, but many remain the same. The spirit of a bathtub race pilot and support team still forge a path through mechanical, financial and emotional obstacles. The excitement still builds for, and the preparation still takes months for just a few hours of racing adventure. The risks are still great to life and limb of the pilot (We thank Nepture for no losses of life with this sport in our history).

The Aggressive Salmon team had confirmed sponsors and are getting ready to produce this year's shirt, with a commemorate logo for the 50th race. See our  Tshirts page for ordering form.

It was a beautiful day in Nanaimo yesterday for the 49th annual Bathtub Race. Our day started with no shortage of challenges, but finished really well. The race boat was in great shape in the morning and ready to hit the seas. Unfortunately, around Snake Island (1/4rd way through the race) our raceboat was dead in the water with water in the fuel system. After 20 min we had it started back up but didn't want to risk going further in the race so we radioed in and headed to the finish line without completing the course. Axl was honest about not completing the course but was still met with huge accolades for the enormous success of our raceboat that pushed the envelope in a myriad of ways.

The best part of the day came when, nearing the tail end of the awards ceremony, Bill McGuire (head of the bathtub society) made a heartwarming presentation and presented Dan with a gigantic Sportmanship trophy for our innovative work.  We did 95% of the work building a inboard race boat from scratch this year and will finish the other 5% easily next year. Out of the dozen new technologies we've brought to bathtub racing, two or three of them still need some fine tuning.

After a huge push by Axl and Mr. Steel, the boat is in fighting shape and ready to brave the seas for the 49th annual World Championship Bathtub Race. It's been painted, tuned, rebuilt, tuned, and then tuned again. With such a innovative and novel design there are a ton of details that needed working out but we're confident that we can race and hopefully complete the course. Being on the podium is a different matter entirely.

With the drive and steering systems sorted out, the team moves into the water to test props and tune the engine to achieve it's full 8hp at the prop shaft. First impressions were excellent and Axl has been communing with the engine heavily since.

The team decided on a steel cable and pulley system for the steering. It's very tight and works like a charm. The pilot rides the boat just like a jetski or motorcycle. Throttle via a brake lever on the handlebars, safety disconnect tethered to lifevest.

We have five different props to choose from and will be experimenting heavily up until the morning of the race trying to obtain our ideal speed and acceleration.

With the construction of the vessel safely licked, our attention has moved to the major task of the project : developing a custom inboard drive system. We thank the bathtub racing gods for the help of Mr. Steel when it comes to all of the custom fabrication work and ingenuity. We're hoping to have a drive-able concept by Friday, the 19th of June. That's our first filming date with Shaw TV.

We've ordered some specialty racing props that are unlike what is currently used in the race, so there's another parallel experiment to add to the awesome-ness of our project.

In a fast a furious layup in the middle of the night last weekend, we went from piles of pre-cut fabric and jugs of epoxy to a complete hull with firmly attached bathtub cockpit. By the next afternoon we were dissolving the PVA release with water and freeing a beautiful sculpture from it's mold. There's many more photos of the boat in the gallery .

We've played with and debated different inboard configurations extensively and have decided to place the engine in the bow for a couple of reasons.

  • The keel in the mid of the boat gives some space for driveshaft sprocket and chain, to keep the angle of the driveshaft low.
  • It's dryer than the stern (as long as it's shrouded). The ass of a bathtub boat is usually lower in the water than the bow. This wouldn't be comfortable for a GX engine.
  • The engine can be oriented level. Because of the allowance in the keel, the engine need not be titled or require universal joints. Can't tip these engines too much and our bow is already going to be in the air.

We feel that this is a good enough reasoning to move forward with the design and contruction of a engine mounting scheme below the front rim of the cockpit.

Today we pumped and mixed our first few liters of epoxy and created the cockpit of the new boat. Four 100" x 20" strips of 6oz E-glass cloth, laid bow to stern. Introduced some 17oz biaxial fabric into a few places for extra strength.

Our bow-mounted inboard engine design requires a big cutout in the front of the cockpit, you can see it masked off in the photo. The green tinge to the mold is the PVA we sprayed generously, in many coats, onto the mold before brushing the first epoxy on.

About Nanaimo Yacht Club

Established in 1931 to encourage the sport of yachting, to foster seamanship and navigation, and to provide and maintain a suitable clubhouse and moorage facilities for the use and recreation of its members.

A historic maritime city located in central Vancouver Island, Nanaimo is closely associated with the sea. The Nanaimo Yacht Club is an integral part of this community, with approximately 750 members who enjoy benefits such as a modern clubhouse and first rate moorage. By volunteering for administrative and maintenance positions, the members have achieved a 1st class facility and very attractive rates.

The Nanaimo Yacht Club is clearly indicated on the Nanaimo Harbour chart at the south end of Newcastle Channel and just north west of the main anchorage.

Applications for membership are being accepted from anyone who has attained the age of 19, who resides in the area defined as School District 68 or School District 69; who followed the prescribed procedure, paid the prescribed fees and has been accepted for membership by the Executive Committee.

Club History

After several false starts dating as far back as the late 1800s, the Nanaimo Yacht Club was finally formed officially in the summer of 1931. The first meeting was held in the waiting room of a funeral parlour! It was decided to rent Anderson’s Boat House in Commercial Inlet for a clubhouse, approximately where the Port Theatre is now located. The principal activity of the time was power boat racing. The first club regatta was held on July 1, 1931.

A year later the club held an International Outboard Regatta which gave it an incentive to expand. In May 1932 the site of the present yacht club was obtained and arrangements made to build some docks. This meant that the members had do clear the embankment, bring in piling and lumber, a pile driver was hired, and all the work to build the docks was done by members. Everything was ready up for the boats to arrive at the end of the race on July 22 when boats finished the long grind from Olympia.

The same year work started on the foundations for a clubhouse. An old building was donated, torn down, and the lumber hauled to the club site. It was financed through $5 non-interest bearing shares, to be bought or paid for by labour on the building of the clubhouse at a rate of 30 cents/hour. This tradition of member participation in the maintenance of the club facilities continues to this day, and is a key part of the success of the club.

With the completion of the clubhouse in 1934, social and racing activities attracted an increasing number of members. Over the years dock facilities were expanded and breakwaters installed. A Ladies Auxiliary was formed and was very active until 1996 when full spousal membership was adopted. Sailing gradually became a more significant part of club activities with the establishment of charters for the comet fleet in 1945, the Sabot fleet in 1964 and the Thunderbird fleet in 1971.

The first covered moorage was built in 1967, and more docks and sheds were added in 1969. The LOGLINE monthly newsletter was started in 1964, and the publication of the annual Yearbook was begun in 1965. The first Christmas Lights cruise was held in 1972.

In 1976/7 the present clubhouse was built and in 1988 the gatehouse was added, along with the promenade walkway and landscaping. The last major expansion occurred in 1996 with the addition of new moorage spaces to bring the total number of boats accommodated up to 370. In 2012 some rearrangement of the moorage spaces will provide more moorage for the larger boats which are becoming more abundant in the club.
