Mutant Ape Yacht Club is the second collection of NFT monkeys released by Yuga Labs. The first, Bored Ape Yacht Club, made over a billion dollars in less than a year.

Mutant Ape Yacht Club is essentially a sequel and it was an instant hit. In the first hour, sales were $96 million, after which prices immediately doubled. And like the original collection, it passed the $1 billion mark in less than a year. In this review, we will explain what Mutant Ape NFT is and why you should buy it.

What is Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC)?

Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), a non-fungible token offshoot of the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection. We previously prepared an in-depth review about them in our article “ Bored Ape Yacht Club: what is it and why is it so popular? ”

Mutant Ape Yacht Club consists of 20,000 unique digital art images. NFTs are created on the basis of the Ethereum blockchain and are presented in the ERC-721 token standard .

Half of the collection was sold at public auction. While the rest were created by existing BAYC NFT holders who “framed” their Bored Ape into a “vial” of “mutant serum” dropped from the air.

The Mutant Ape Yacht Club was one of the first NFT collections to reward the existing owner community with a free and brand new NFT.

Bored Ape Chemistry: what is it?

MAYC serum is a standalone NFT that can be purchased from Bored Ape Chemistry Club self collection. This serum turns a bored ape into a mutant ape. You can only use it once. To the delight of the owners, the monkey did not burn out after the mutation. Thus, the owner gets two independent NFTs – the original BAYC and the modified MAYC.

On the day of the release of MAYC, the authors of the project randomly distributed 10,000 of these sera among BAYC holders. And another 10,000 were put up for a Dutch auction .

In this case, the final image of the mutant depends on the type of serum used. There are 3 types in total:

• M1 – minimal modifications of the monkey’s face and mouth;
• M2 – the appearance of various kinds of growths and changes in body parts;
• M3 (Mega Mutant Serum) – a mutant monkey in a completely new way.

Who created Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC)?

Yuga Labs, the team behind the highly acclaimed and successful Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection, has created the Mutant Ape Yacht Club collection.

All Yuga Labs developers used pseudonyms until two of them were doxed by BuzzFeed in a February 2022 article. And after that, all four posted their real photos and names on Twitter.

The team launched the Mutant Ape Yacht Club on August 28, 2021 using the Dutch auction system, where the price has been gradually reduced from a starting price of 3 ETH. Mutant Serum was also given away to existing BAYC holders.

How did the idea of ​​creating MAYC come about?

After the sale, BAYC quickly became one of the most famous and popular NFT collections. Yuga Labs has attributed much of the collection’s success to the active community that has formed around it.

To show appreciation to their community, the Yuga Labs team has completed the first phase of their project roadmap by launching MAYC. A new collection inspired and partly based on the BAYC collection.

While MAYC was primarily a reward for existing BAYC holders, the project also aimed to welcome newcomers to the established BAYC community.

How does MAYC work?

After the completion of the public sale of the first 10,000 MAYC NFTs, BAYC holders were able to mint mutant monkeys for free (plus a gas fee ) by exposing their bored monkey to a vial of the serum via a smart contract.

Any bored monkey can be exposed to an M1, M2, or M3 serum vial once. The resulting mutant monkey retains the basic attributes of the original bored monkey, but with unique mutated variations.

Applying the serum to a bored monkey visually alters the monkey’s attributes in a variety of ways, from wet skin and protruding neck growths to misshapen teeth and bulging eyes. Other unique attributes might be a torn shirt, green goo dripping from the face, or a creature worn as a hat.

You can become part of the community by purchasing Bored Ape NFTs and mutating them by giving them the serum, or you can buy Mutant NFTs directly. Currently, this can only be done in the secondary market, for example, on OpenSea and Looksrare . So, let’s take a look at both methods.

The public sale of the MAYC NFT collection was an instant success as the first 10,000 Mutant Apes were sold in the first hour of launch, raising $96 million. It has gone on to surpass $1 billion in sales. Being a MAYC holder offers benefits like exclusive access to the MAYC community.

How Does Mutant Ape Yacht Club Work?

Serums are what separate Mutant Ape Yacht Club from Bored Ape Yacht Club.

A Mutant Ape is created when Bored Apes are injected with special serums i.e. M1 and M2. When Bored Apes are injected with M3 serums, Mega Mutants are created. These look very different from the average Mutant Ape and usually have rarer attributes.

M1 serums are the most common with 7,500 vials in creation, while M2 serums follow shortly behind with 2,492 vials. M3 serums are very scarce, with only 8 serums in existence.

Some of the common Bored Ape mutations include bulging eyes, wacky deformed teeth, and protruding skin growths. Some Mutant Apes will even feature different clothes and skin slime.

Bored Apes can only be exposed to Mutant serum once before the vial is burned. The original Bored Ape belonging to the owner is not affected during the mutation process.

Who Created Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC)?

Mutant Ape Yacht Club was created by Yuga Labs. Yuga Labs was founded by Greg Solano and Wylie Aronow, both of whom had been crypto HODLers and investors since 2017. However, they soon saw massive opportunities in NFTs. In a bid to join the trend, Yuga Labs partnered with two software designers, Emperor Tomato Ketchup and No Sass.

• Set up an online wallet : Since MAYC NFTs are built on Ethereum, investors need to hold some ETH before purchasing them. What is Mutant Ape Yacht Club

In January of 2022, the Mutant Ape Yacht Club made headlines when its rare Serum #69 sold for a whopping 1,542.06 ETH ($5.8 million at the time), making it the largest sale of a Bored Ape “serum” to date. 

The serum was bought by Deepak Thapliyal, CEO of the blockchain tech startup Chain, who had to compete with a rival bid of 1,500 ETH ($5.76 million) from Andreessen Horowitz-backed Meta4 Capital.

The sale instantly put the Mutant Ape Yacht Club on the map and made the project famous in the crypto community. So sudden was the adoption of the NFT project that many were left wondering where the collection came from, and just what exactly a serum was?

The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC)

To understand the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, it’s important to learn about its parent collection – The Bored Ape Yacht Club .

Originally launched in April of 2021, the Bored Ape Yacht Club originally comprised 10,000 randomly generated NFTs that took the form of funny-looking apes with various characteristics, ranging from those with tweed suits to those who smoke. The collection, created by cryptocurrency marketing and development company Yuga Labs, instantly rose to the top of the NFT charts. As of early 2022, sales have crossed the $1 billion mark.

Today, Bored Apes function as an exclusive club, with the floor price currently sitting at 124.89 ETH ($386,000) – which puts it out of the reach of nearly everyone whose not a millionaire.

Yuga Labs Roadmap

Despite the success of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Yuga Labs never intended to restrict the project to 10,000 NFTs. As part of a move to expand the collection’s reach outside of the extremely wealthy, the company launched Mutant Apes (MAYC) after all of the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs had been sold.

The extension of the original project resulted in the creation of 20,000 Mutant Apes, which would reward both Bored Ape owners and newcomers who chose to buy into the community.

Distribution

As part of the release, the Mutant Apes were split into two groups: 10,000 Mutant Ape NFTs would go towards holders of the original Bored Apes in the form of “serum,” while the remaining 10,000 would be released to newcomers (as the finished product) who wanted entry into the Bored Ape universe at a lower cost. 

To change their existing Bored Ape into a member of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, the holder had to expose their original ape to the serum they received. This would create a new Mutant Ape, leaving the owner with two ape NFTs.

Ultimately, the airdrop allowed Bored Ape holders to keep their original NFT while minting a valuable extra token.

While the existing Bored Ape holders had their serum NFTs airdropped directly to their wallets, the other 10,000 Mutant Apes were sold via a “Dutch Auction” public sale on August 28, 2021. A Dutch auction is a method in which an item is auctioned at a higher asking price and gradually lowered. Yuga Labs set the original Mutant Ape price at 3 ETH and reduced it until they were all sold. 

Understanding the Serum Process

On August 28, the same day as the Dutch auction, every holder of a Bored Ape token was airdropped one of three serums: M1, M2, or Mega Mutant (M3). Of the 10,000 serums, Yuga Labs originally airdropped 7,500 M1 serums, 2,492 M2 serums, and eight Mega Mutant, or M3, serums. 

Injecting an NFT with an M1 or M2 mutant serum would change its appearance slightly, with the resulting Mutant Ape retaining the altered traits of the original ape. The M3 mutant serum, however, created a vastly different ape with rarer and more complex traits.

To sum up, an individual must have both a Bored Ape NFT and a mutant serum in their wallet before using the mutating feature on the MAYC website. As serums burn after the first use, they can only be used once. Consequently, a Bored Ape that has been mutated cannot use another serum of the same tier.

The Future of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club

As of the writing of this article, the Mutant Ape Yacht Club floor price stands at 32.1 ETH ($99,397) on the NFT exchange OpenSea, with the total market cap of the project sitting at a whopping 598,838.85 ETH ($1.84 billion).

The first phase of the collection’s roadmap has been completed, and members of the NFT community have openly wondered about what will come next for members of the BAYC and MAYC.

Many believe that the Yuga team will ultimately create a play-to-earn blockchain-based game. Recently, Yuga Labs bought the Meebits and Cryptopunks NFT projects as part of a plan to develop a shared gaming universe. Yuga has also teamed up with one of the leading companies in the field of P2E, Animoca Brands, to help their game become a reality.

Speaking on the partnership, a spokesperson from Yuga commented, “We’re excited to work with Animoca Brands to grow the BAYC universe and expand the utility and benefits offered to all Bored Ape NFT holders.”

Wait, i thought the apes were supposed to be bored. now they're mutants.

Unless your internet connection has been off or you’ve been out on a boat with no connection to civilization, you’ve probably heard of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. The name has made so many headlines that it probably rings a bell, even if you don’t completely understand what it is. Just to refresh your memory, if you’re still confused, Bored Ape Yacht Club is an iconic NFT project in which possession of one of the tokens grants membership into an exclusive club. Many celebrities, including Jimmy Fallon and Post Malone, have joined the club, and the cheapest token at the time of writing is around 74 ETH (which is right around $244k, with ETH price right around $3300).

Mutant Who?

So what is MAYC? It’s a value-add by the creators of BAYC for their already valuable Bored Apes in the form of an interactive serum token airdrop. Technically it is its own collection, but it’s heavily affiliated with the Bored Apes. The Mutant Apes, which were created by mixing a Bored Ape with the serum (with no negative effect on the original BAYC token), slightly resemble their Bored Ape hosts, but with some… mutated traits. Some are gross and have slimy-looking membranes, and others have some oddities, like having a few too many eyes. 

A Mutant Ape could be created in two ways: by minting from the original MAYC drop or by introducing a Bored Ape to a vial of serum sent from Yuga Labs as mentioned above. The MAYC drop sold out in less than an hour, generating a whopping $90 million in sales. There were 20,000 in the MAYC collection total, some being created by original BAYC holders and the remaining being minted directly from the drop. A peek at Opensea reveals that there are some mutants yet to be created, as the MAYC collection is sitting right around 17.7k items at the time of writing.

BAYC Membership Bonus

So what was the purpose? BAYC has shown incredible ability to keep its holders engaged and active, from the Bored Ape Kennel Club (another incentive that was given to holders) to the interactive and mysterious storyline and vague riddles that are common to the project. MAYC was a value ad, allowing Bored Apes to profit off of their tokens without sacrificing their membership status. It also served as an on-boarding mechanism to allow new members access to the Bored Ape culture, with a reduced membership so as not to cheapen the OG tokens.

Storyline, Baby!

The MAYC serves as an excellent demonstration of the value-adding power of airdropping tokens to a project, as well as the power of story . By crafting a compelling and mysterious narrative around the serum, providing just enough information to be interesting but not enough to give away the surprise, BAYC enthralled its holders and captivated outsiders. This fixation led to their phenomenal drop, where MAYC tokens sold out of a Dutch auction that started each token at 3 ETH with a floor of .01 ETH. The floor is now around 14 ETH at the time of writing. Not a bad appreciation percentage!

MAYC is a sort-of spin-off of BAYC, with three primary objectives. The Mutant apes provided existing holders with financial upside, the method by which the serum that created the Mutant Apes. This helped maintain the wave of BAYC hype and promoted even higher engagement rates. And finally, the MAYC allowed new members to join the BAYC ecosystem at a more reasonable price, albeit with limited membership. This was all accomplished through brilliant marketing tactics and an ambiguous and exciting story and serves as an excellent example of NFT project potential.

Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC): Analysis

Mutant Ape Yacht Club launched in late August of this year when 10,000 serums were air dropped to BAYC holders and another 10,000 MAYCs were made available for public sale.

Mutant Apes were minted for 3E at public sale and the last few months have been volatile. As you can see below, the floor price initially shot up to ~7E in August before slowly coming off to 5E and then settling at 4E for most of the fall and winter. Since early November, MAYC price and volume have been picking up.

I think it comes down to a more defined view of what MAYC really is. The initial uncertainty around MAYC upon release was whether they would just be a “second-tier citizen” to BAYC. Are mutants more pets akin to BAKC or are they more OG apes? Over the last month people have realized that MAYC actually get much of the same utility as OG Apes. This became most notably apparent in the Adidas NFT drop when mutants and OG apes both got whitelist spots (after some initial technical difficulties). In fact, the whole minting process was put on hold because some mutants were not able to mint. The Adidas drop was an instant 3-5x for minters.

We are seeing this in the underlying data with a strong steady uptick in unique active holders, going from <9k at the end of September to now pushing 11k as more people want to join into the ecosystem.

Future Utility/Roadmap:

Let’s remember what Yuga Labs has said about Mutant Apes:

“Mutants represent the final tier of membership; everything going forward occurs with the intention of accruing utility and member’s-only benefits to Bored Apes foremost, but also Mutants, and to a lesser extent, Bored Apes with BAKC companions.”

Yuga Labs intended for Mutants to expand the BAYC ecosystem and has said it would be the final tier of membership. The language does suggest OG apes will see greater utility, perhaps in the form of more $APE token if and when that gets released. But mutants are very much apes in the club and Yuga Labs is focused on driving utility toward the ape ecosystem.

You can see this with the earliest parts of Roadmap 2.0 as mutants are included in the mobile gaming competition. It is still uncertain but plausible mutants would be included in any future NFT airdrops as well.

BAYC’s Dec 13th tweet featured a banana in a robot hand. It is plausible BAYC introduces new characters as part of roadmap 2.0 that feature ape or mutant robots.

The floor on OG apes is currently 52.7E and the floor on mutants is 7.4E. The BAYC floor is inaccessible to most while MAYCs are still in the range of other blue chip NFT assets. If access to future NFT projects are similar and $APE token distribution if/when released comes out to something better than 1/7th between OG apes and mutants the spread between OG apes and mutants could close very rapidly. That is a big if that we will likely get more color on in 2022.

Of course, the underlying bet is really that Yuga Labs can execute on their roadmap and push value for NFT holders where the whole BAYC ecosystem benefits. There is certainly execution risk involved and potential competition from other projects. So far, innovation and execution have been the core tenants behind the Yuga Labs team. They don’t participate in a lot of publicity or actively try to pump their NFTs at all. They spend their time developing their project and that is what many in the ecosystem love about BAYC. Exciting times for BAYC and MAYC heading into 2022!
