SCYA Events

This yacht club history is reproduced from the SCYA 2017 Race Calendar & Yacht Club Directory

The Lake Gregory Yacht Club was started by four couples who were yacht club members and boaters from Marina del Rey, CA. The four purchased residences in the greater Crestline area between 2001 and 2004 and began meeting regularly. The group purchased radio controlled boats for local lake sailing and later decided to formalize as a yacht club to expand their membership to other mountain residents. After first meeting in member’s homes, the club members later enjoyed two dedicated facilities. Today, the club has a high profile locally and is known for its community outreach.

LGYC members during opening day

A highlight of 2016 was the renovation of and moving to the club’s dedicated facility. It was purchased by four members and is leased to LGYC. The facility is a perfect and unique meeting place for club members and guests. It represents approximately one year of creative, technical and construction efforts, all by members, to make a worthy clubhouse. The yearlong work efforts were rewarded on LGYC’s Opening Day, June 4, 2016. SCYA’s Norie Martin officiated the invocation. Joining the owners and the Bridge was Senator Mike Morrell, as a ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted. LGYC is extremely proud of its accomplishment.

Southern California Yachting Association announces Club of the Year winners

lake gregory yacht club

Del Rey, American Legion and Lake Gregory yacht clubs were all honored in annual competition.

LONG BEACH—Yacht clubs from Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Baja California were recognized for civic outreach, charitable activities and member services during an annual awards event held in Long Beach on Nov. 14.

The Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA) awarded “Club of the Year” honors to yacht clubs in three categories.

Del Rey Yacht Club was named Club of the Year in the Senior Member category, while American Legion Yacht Club earned the same recognition in the Regular Member category.

The top Associate Member club was Lake Gregory Yacht Club. Lake Gregory YC is located on Lake Gregory in Crestline, north of San Bernardino and west of Lake Arrowhead. Del Rey YC is based in Marina del Rey and American Legion YC is in Newport Beach.

Cabrillo Yacht Club (San Pedro) and King Harbor Yacht Club (Redondo Beach) were also recognized with the Commodore’s Award. The award was granted to both clubs, according to SCYA staff, for “accumulating a high percentage of possible points.”

Nine other awards were handed out as part of SCYA’s “2019 Recognition Awards.” Those recipients were:

– Richard and Susan Countess, Pierpoint Bay Yacht Club, George L. and Kay B. Fisher Memorial Trophy (distinguished service to yachting)

– Pat Reynolds, The Mariner, editor and publisher, James M, Webster Perpetual Trophy (outstanding contribution to yachting, with or without being associated with yachting)

– Charles Pascal, California Yacht Club, Maritime Order of the Golden Key (outstanding service as amateur radio operator)

– Kevin Hawkins, California Yacht Club, Mort Bloom Perpetual Trophy (excellence, commitment and duration of judges, umpires and race officers)

– Denise George, Santa Monica Windjammers’ Club, Peggy Slater Memorial Trophy (enhancing women’s participation in sailing)

– Peter Tietz, Lake Mission Viejo Yacht Club, SCYA Honorary Commodore

– Roy Disney & Pyewacket crew, California Yacht Club, SCYA Rescue Award (outstanding display of heroism and compassion in sport of sailing)

– Mark Surber, Snoopy , Coronado Yacht Club, SCYA Transpac Trophy (top finishing SYCA member boat on corrected time)

– Anne Sacks, California Yacht Club, Warren Ewert Memorial Trophy (distinguished service to SCYA).

The SCYA was established in 1921 as a communication, educational and organizational hub of the yachting community in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Baja California.

Live daily news for the mountain communities

Lake gregory yacht club turns crestline into boomtown this afternoon.

lake gregory yacht club

In a press release sent to the Mountain Reporter from the Lake Gregory Yacht Club, a few booms from cannon fire will be heard this afternoon in Crestline. It reads as follows:

“Lake Gregory Yacht Club is open and active all year-long. In order to keep up with the eastern states’ yachting tradition, we will ceremoniously “close,” or decommission LGYC on Friday, June 1st.

Saturday, June 2nd, sees LGYC hosting our annual OPENING DAY with a bang!!! And we mean a Big Bang, we will use a small cannon several times during our ceremony, which commences at Noon. The Rim High School Fifes and Drums will be playing several pieces throughout our ceremony, which concludes around 1pm. This is an invitation only event and attendees will be representatives of some of the 95 yacht clubs in the Southern California region as well as local area dignitaries.”

This comes just two days after a film crew was detonating explosives and simulating heavy artillery and gunfire in town near Thousand Pines.

With the fireworks happening at the end of this month and all of the new community events launching in town this summer, Crestline is indeed turning into our boomtown on the mountain.

Crestline, CA

Lake gregory yacht club.

We have a dedicated spot on the lake with permanent buoys. The lake is at around 5000 ft so the sailing is seasonal. Some live here. Some of us do not live here but own cabins. Others come up for the day. The lake is about a 2 hour drive from Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles.

The Lake Gregory YC has decided to make the RC Laser the official boat of the club. As boats become available the fleet will build. Our current members (not all club members) Tucker Strasser (2 boats) Julian Soto Nancy Evans Paul Artof (2 boats) Adam Klein (2 boats) Rick Dinon I have been told other club members have boats on order which appear to be in stock as of last week. We are also in the process of getting everyone registered with the class.

YC info though it has not been updated http://956.97f.myftpupload.com

Preliminary calendar. We also run the Southern California Yachting Association Midwinters for RC boats each year in May but they were canceled again this year due to covid.

In 2008 it became apparent that the mountain communities would benefit from establishing a Model Boat Area at Lake Gregory, Crestline, CA. The Lake Gregory Yacht Club put together a proposal to set up an area for Model Boating at Lake Gregory and presented the proposal to the San Bernardino Regional Parks Department.

After two meetings and many phone calls, the San Bernardino Regional Parks Department denied

the proposal on February 26, 2009. Coincidentally, it happened that a Crest Forest Municipal Advisory Council meeting was scheduled the very evening that the mail was received. Dennis Sharp, Fleet Captain,  made a presentation of the wants and needs of the mountain communities to the council and after more meetings and phone calls the San Bernardino Regional Parks Department on June 17 2009 put out a press release: The San Bernardino Regional Parks Department dedicated an area at Lake Gregory, CA for slow speed electric boats and remote-controlled sailboat use!

Since the area was established, the LGYC has used the area to facilitate regattas for the LGYC and mountain communities including the Boys and Girls Club. The area has been improved since county approval, including a ramp, two benches and trash cans and LGYC maintains a retrieval boat. The LGYC also maintains the racecourse buoys and assists in the aquatic weed abatement on Lake Gregory.

Currently, Laser RCs, DragonFlight 95s (DF 95) and V-32s compete on scored season series and various regattas at Lake Gregory, CA. LGYC is on the annual Southern California Yachting Association’s “Midwinter” circuit” (May 2024 in Crestline, CA) and Lake Gregory sailors travel to events in southern California including: The V-32 annual National Regatta at Silvergate Yacht Club, San Diego, CA; Helmsmen Model Yacht Club of Long Beach, CA and Orange County Model Sailing Club, Irvine, CA as well as the San Diego Argonauts, Mission Bay (San Diego), CA. Additionally, a group of Soling 1 Meter and DF95 skippers from Lake Gregory travel on Tuesdays (year round) to sail at Lake Harveston, Temecula, CA.

Visiting skippers are always welcome to sail on our beautiful lake. Check out our 2024 Calendar by clicking this button
