Linssen Yachts GS 43.9

  • Linssen GS 43.9 | Motor Boats Monthly | Reviews

Dutch builders have tried every trick regarding liveaboard layouts but Linssen has thought long and hard about how to make life brighter and easier

The 43 is part of this Dutch manufacturer’s ‘9’-series, which means it is built along production lines rather than the pricier Mark II boats that benefit from a custom, hand-built interior and a more shapely and costly to build multi-chine hull. However, that doesn’t mean the 43.9 doesn’t have a choice of layouts – there’s a three-cabin version, which we took out on test, and a two-cabin arrangement that boasts a larger saloon complete with a neat desk/office area.

In our three-cabin Linssen, the main saloon has a large U-shaped settee that can be pulled out to make an occasional double berth. Here, six can be accommodated around the table but most of the time this is going to be used for lounging rather than dining as the TV is neatly housed in the sideboard opposite, while tucked under the companionway steps is a pull-out cocktail cabinet.

The galley is well equipped with a large fridge, hob and oven along with a decent-sized sink. Stowage isn’t bad either, especially as there’s a massive storeroom for bulk items behind the steps that lead down to the forward cabin area. Less abundant is countertop space – although there is always the dinette table adjacent.

Third cabins on this size of craft often feel a bit squeezed in and you sometimes get the feeling the builder shouldn’t have bothered but the 43.9’s is rather inviting. The two berths are a good length and the cabin enjoys plenty of light thanks to an overhead skylight.

A huge drawer under the forecabin’s large central double will swallow up masses of gear and the occupants of this cabin probably won’t need it as it is already furnished with plenty of cupboard space and a large, easy to fall into wardrobe. The cabin benefits from direct access to the toilet compartment with its proper, full-sized basin, while those in the third cabin will have to nip across the lobby. However, to avoid queues in the morning the teak-seated shower room is totally separate. Back aft the master cabin has all you need for endless nights afloat – a generous 7ft by 5ft berth, side tables, a walk-in wardrobe with shelves and hanging space – and its own en-suite facilities with an enclosed shower stall.

In terms of performance, it’s important to realise that speed is not what this boat is about. If you’re into taking in the surroundings rather than rushing past them you’ll find that for the most part 1800-2000rpm, giving 6.5 to 7 knots, is just fine. There is a twin engine option, but unless you’re determined to take this Linssen out to sea where the dual power plants would be a definite comfort, opt for a bow and stern thruster instead – it will make tricky mooring much easier.

Passion, endurance, and refinement: the SL is the mark of a Linssen that has been developed for the most discerning enthusiasts of sporting lifestyle.

SL is an acronym for Sport Luxury. For the SL, the Linssen Yachts prototyping & engineering team worked in close co-operation with KesselsGranger DesignWorks to create a series of yachts that combine the unmistakably luxurious Linssen identity with enhancements that adhere to the greatest sporting traditions.

As fitting with the sporting philosophy, the main character lines of the yacht have been accentuated. The exterior design is hallmarked by details that are unique to the SL series.

One of the most notable characteristics of the SL design is the floating roof. This has been achieved by finishing the saloon window frames and posts in anthracite, which visually connect the glasshouse as one element and separates it from the roof.

This styling treatment reflects the heritage and lineage of previous Linssen S generations (SE / SX) with an avant-garde evolution.

linssen yachts youtube

The anthracite-coloured rear sections of the saloon tumblehome provide the perfect backdrop for the contrasting stainless wing-shaped nameplates. These nameplates have an additional anthracite inlay for the meticulously detailed Linssen SL logo, which is finished in stainless steel. As with the saloon windows, the portholes have also been masked with anthracite to visually reduce the amount of individual shapes and enhance the length of the yacht. Great care has been applied to the design of the stainless steel railing. The aft section is curved for a powerful yet elegant appearance. In accordance to this theme, the rear wind protection panels of the AC have a unique shape with a subtly curved profile and sculpted surface treatment. The sheerline of the yacht is accentuated by a PVC fender, resulting in a sleek and purposeful profile. The rounded end caps of the lower fender line, which runs to the swim platform, have been finished in black for optimal integration. Visually raising the bow out of the water, the swept bowline emphasises the shape of the hull for a more powerful aesthetic. Further details include the unique engine vent, bearing the Sport Luxury script that is engraved in stainless steel.

Roger Federer Just Rocked One of Rolex’s Coolest Sports Watches

By Oren Hartov

Earlier this week, at the New York premiere of his new documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days , tennis icon and Rolex testimonee Roger Federer strapped on the Yacht-Master II ref. 226627—a watch so lightweight that I feared, upon first handling it in Geneva last year, that I might crush it, thus owing Rolex corporate headquarters a check for $14,050 (plus tax).

The ref. 226627 was not Rolex’s first titanium watch—that distinction belongs to the 50mm-wise Deepsea Challenge , which was seemingly designed for James Cameron to wear while plumbing the depths of the Atlantic for sunken ocean liners. The Yacht-Master II, on the other hand, is arguably more exciting: Measuring a more comfortable 42mm wide, it was first spotted on the wrist of skipper (and fellow Rolex testimonee) Sir Ben Aislney back in the fall of 2021. No longer a prototype and now a full production model, it’s crafted from Grade 5 RLX titanium and is available for purchase. ( Theoretically, at least. )

Roger Federer attends the Federer Twelve Final Days Premiere during the 2024 Tribeca Festival

What makes this Submariner-esque watch different from, well, a Submariner ? The two are admittedly similar in design, with a few key differences: There’s the RXL titanium case, of course, but then there’s also the 42mm sizing (as opposed to 41mm on the Sub); a bidirectional timing bezel with a sand-blasted Cerachrom insert (instead of the Sub’s unidirectional dive bezel); the date window (which is only seen on Submariner Date models); and the matching, RLX titanium Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock folding clasp and Easylink comfort extension. (The Sub doesn’t have an available titanium bracelet.)

Other than that, both the Submariner Date and the Yacht-Master II are powered by Rolex’s automatic Calibre 3235 movement with 70 hours of power reserve, and both are made for aquatic use. The Sub, however, is a diver’s watch rated to 300m of water resistance; the Yacht-Master II, on the other hand, is made for sailing and is water resistant to 100m—still respectable, to be sure, but best kept to the deck of a cutting-edge racing craft.

Seeing the Yacht-Master II on Federer’s wrist is more fun than notable—it looks perfectly at home when paired with his dark suit at the photocall, though it's a distinctly sporty piece made to be used and abused. Being a Rolex testimonee, of course, Federer has been spotted in just about every notable Crown offering over the past few years, from the Le Mans Daytona to the Sky-Dweller in precious metals and more. (The man pulls off a dressy 1908 with black tie beautifully, but let’s be real—this is a brand famed for its sport watches, and we’re talking about one of the world’s most renowned athletes.) Having cycled through many of the brand’s most compelling offerings, the only remaining pertinent question is: How do we get Fed into a “Leopard” Daytona ?

Trump supporters, protestors turn out for MAGA Boat Parade in metro Detroit

B y air, by land and by lake, supporters and opponents of Donald Trump flocked to metro Detroit on Saturday to get their message out.

A "Make America Great Again" Boat Parade, organized to coincide with the former president’s 78th birthday, which was Friday, flooded Lake St. Clair with red, white and blue through the afternoon. What appeared to be a few hundred boats, decked out in American flags and "Trump 2024" banners, sailed along the shoreline from Nine Mile Tower toward Hart Plaza. For supporters of the parade, the day’s theme was clear: community unity.

“We’re celebrating President Trump, Trump’s birthday, Father’s day, unity in the community,” said Rob Cortis, who mans a repurposed ambulance with an attached trailer with “Trump Unity” spelled out in massive letters. He calls it, appropriately, the Trump Unity Bridge. As he spoke, a speaker on the vehicle blasted Barry Manilow’s "Copacabana."

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

“We want to put America first, we want to put the working man first and put the people first,” said Cortis.

The boat parade was scheduled to end in the Detroit River near Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit around 4 p.m. At the same time, Trump spoke at a roundtable at a Detroit church. At 6 p.m., Trump was at Huntington Place making the keynote speech for The People's Convention. Turning Point Action, a conservative nonprofit, hosted Trump as keynote speaker at gathering. The three-day event touted a roster of big name republicans, including Donald Trump Jr., U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and Trump’s former Chief of Staff, Steve Bannon.

“I think he’s reaching out,” said Mark Miller, who set up to watch the day’s festivities with his family from a park along the water. “Michigan has always been close, but Detroit has always been not for Trump. I’m impressed that he’s here.”

Debbie Lambert, another parader, has been a supporter since Trump’s 2016 run. She hopes his visit to Michigan will help other people in her state “see everything that’s going on, that people open their eyes to really be awake,” she said. She thinks Trump’s recent criminal conviction in New York is an effort to keep voters from casting ballots for who they want.

“We’ve been to many rallies,” she said. “It’s like-minded people supporting Trump.”

In tandem with the waterbound, the group Bikers for Trump headed up a road route for the parade. A school of motorcycles sporting MAGA flags and moving 20 miles per hour were followed by the Trump unity bridge and a dozen or so cars. That group drove down the shore and pulled off to regroup at Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe. Later, a smaller fleet circled Hart Plaza in parallel to the flotilla. At the intersection, cars honked in support. Others lowered their windows and shouted to express disdain.

A few protesters gathered to represent an independent movement of Detroiters against Trump, not tied to any political party, said Mark Airgood, one of the demonstrators. “There is no way Detroit welcomes Trump,” he said. “We know that the vast majority of Detroiters stand with us, against Trump and against the racism he spreads.”

Several different groups of The People’s Convention attendees lingered nearby to observe the protesters as they marched in circles next to the Joe Louis "The Fist" monument, shouting into mega-horns and touting signs.

Perry Everson, a young Detroiter, stood by the crowd with a Trump sign. He’d come out to show his support for the parade. He’s hoping to see more Black voters for Trump in the coming election, but respects that there are alternative views. “I support everyone, everyone has their own opinion,” he said.

A similar dynamic played out in the air: Small planes criss-crossed over the lake with banners in tow. One read “Trump 2024.” Another, paid for by the Democratic National Committee, read “TRUMP’S A CROOK DON’T LET EM SINK UR BOAT.” A few others — two advertising a gun shop and another a brand of cannabis — took advantage of the crowds for publicity.

A small group of supporters waited for the boats to pass by Hart Plaza at 4 p.m., their designated arrival time. A few vessels sporting American flags trickled in. Cortis said the boats arrived ahead of schedule and turned back near the Renaissance Center.

“I was born here,” said Cortis. “And I’m proud to have Trump as one of my guests in Detroit, Michigan. Very proud.”

Why was Trump talking about sharks at a campaign event?

Trouble with his teleprompter forced former President Donald Trump to go off script on Sunday, leading to a rant about his active dislike for sharks during a campaign event in sweltering heat that sent six to the hospital in Nevada.

In a wide-ranging speech to 6,900 Silver State voters two days before the primary election, the presumptive Republican nominee announced a new plan to end taxes on tips . Trump criticized the company hired to help organize the event as he struggled with his teleprompter and brought up allegations he hasn't paid those who worked for him in the past, saying, "I don't pay contractors that do a s--- job."

While his teleprompter was down, Trump, who frequently rails against renewable energy , described meeting with a boat manufacturer in South Carolina. His concern that electric boats' weight could make them prone to sinking led him to several tangents, including one about sharks.

More: Shark attacks in Florida, Hawaii lead to closed beaches, hospitalizations: What to know

"It must be because of M.I.T., my relationship with M.I.T., very smart. I say, 'What would happen if the boat sank from its weight and you're in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery, and the battery is now underwater, and there's a shark that's approximately 10 yards over there?" Trump said. "By the way, lot of shark attacks lately. Did you notice that?"

He described asking the boat manufacturer if, in the hypothetical scenario, he should get electrocuted or jump near the shark.

"I'll take electrocution every single time," Trump said. "I'm not getting near the shark."

The former president's fear of sharks is well documented, and he went on a similar rant about them at a campaign stop in Iowa in October 2023.

Trump's comments on Sunday went viral, leading to widespread online ridicule and raising questions about his fitness for the Oval Office.

Philippine officials say Chinese forces seized 2 navy boats in disputed shoal, injuring sailors

FILE - A dilapidated but still active Philippine Navy ship BRP Sierra Madre sits at the Second Thomas Shoal, locally known as Ayungin Shoal, at the disputed South China Sea on Aug. 22, 2023. The United States renewed a warning Tuesday, June 18, 2024 that its obligated to defend its close treaty ally a day after Filipino navy personnel were injured and their supply boats damaged in one of the most serious confrontations between the Philippines and China in a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, officials said. (AP Photo/Aaron Favila, File)

MANILA – Chinese forces seized two Philippine rubber boats that were delivering food and other supplies to a military outpost in a disputed South China Sea shoal in a tense confrontation in which some Filipino navy personnel were injured, Philippine security officials said Tuesday.

The United States renewed a warning Tuesday that it is obligated to defend the Philippines, a treaty ally, a day after the hourslong hostilities in Second Thomas Shoal . The shoal has been occupied by a small Philippine navy contingent aboard a long-grounded warship that has been closely monitored by China's coast guard and navy in a yearslong territorial standoff.

Recommended Videos

There is fear that territorial disputes in the South China Sea, long regarded as an Asian flashpoint, could escalate and pit the United States and China in a larger conflict. China and the Philippines blamed each other for Monday’s hostilities, the most serious in recent months, but provided few details.

A Philippine government task force overseeing the territorial disputes condemned what it said were “dangerous maneuvers, including ramming and towing” which disrupted an effort to transport food, water and other supplies to the Filipinos manning the territorial outpost on the grounded ship, the BRP Sierra Madre, at the shoal. It did not elaborate.

Two Philippine security officials, who had knowledge of the supply mission at the shoal, separately told The Associated Press that two rubber boats manned by Filipino navy personnel had approached the BRP Sierra Madre at the shoal to deliver fresh supplies when several Chinese coast guard personnel on speedboats arrived to disrupt the mission, sparking a scuffle and collisions.

At least eight of the Filipinos were injured, including one who lost a thumb, in the scuffle, said one of the two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were under orders not to discuss the high-seas confrontation publicly.

Five of the injured sailors were rescued by one of two Philippine coast guard patrol ships that were waiting at a distance to back up the navy’s supply mission at the shoal. The two rubber supply boats were towed away by Chinese coast guard personnel and then abandoned after being damaged and emptied of their contents, including an unspecified number of rifles, the two officials said. They were later recovered by the Filipino navy, they said.

The Chinese coast guard gave a different version of the hostilities and said the Philippines “is entirely responsible for this.” It said a Philippine vessel “ignored China’s repeated solemn warnings … and dangerously approached a Chinese vessel in normal navigation in an unprofessional manner, resulting in a collision."

China's Foreign Ministry said the supply ship was accompanied by two Philippine speedboats that were attempting to deliver construction materials and other supplies to the BRP Sierra Madre. It described the Chinese coast guard’s actions as “professional, restrained, reasonable and lawful."

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell discussed China’s actions with his Philippine counterpart, Maria Theresa Lazaro, in a telephone call. Both agreed that China’s “dangerous actions threatened regional peace and stability,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

Campbell reaffirmed that the 1951 U.S.-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty, which obligates Washington and Manila to help defend each other in major conflicts, “extends to armed attacks on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft -– including those of its coast guard -– anywhere in the South China Sea,” according to Miller.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said Monday night that his country’s armed forces would resist “China’s dangerous and reckless behavior” which “contravenes their statements of good faith and decency."

“We will exert our utmost in order to fulfill our sworn mandate to protect our territorial integrity, sovereignty, and sovereign rights,” Teodoro said. “It should now be clear to the international community that China’s actions are the true obstacles to peace and stability in the South China Sea.”

Several other incidents have occurred in recent months near Second Thomas Shoal, which is less than 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers) from the nearest Philippine coast and is where the BRP Sierra Madre, now encrusted with rust, was deliberately grounded in 1999 to create a territorial outpost. The ship remains an actively commissioned military vessel, meaning an attack on it could be considered by the Philippines as an act of war.

China has become increasingly assertive in pressing its claim to virtually the entire South China Sea, which has led to a rising number of direct conflicts with other countries in the region, most notably the Philippines and Vietnam.

A new Chinese law which took effect Saturday authorizes its coast guard to seize foreign ships “that illegally enter China’s territorial waters” and to detain foreign crews for up to 60 days. The law renewed a reference to 2021 legislation that says China’s coast guard can fire upon foreign ships if necessary.
