Hayling Island Sailing Club

Although formed in 1921, H.I.S.C. moved to it’s current unique position on the southern shores of Chichester Harbour at Sandy Point in 1936. Hayling Island Sailing Club held its first regatta in 1922, when in addition to sailing less expected events such as pillow-fights on a pole suspended between two barges, and mud patten races were fiercely competed.

During the Second World War the sailing club was used as a base for the “Cockleshell heroes”, the brave men who used small two-man canoes to penetrate enemy ports and mine their ships. The sailing club was also the base of the C.O.P.P.s, Combined Operations Pilotage Pioneers who were landed on enemy coasts to survey the beaches for suitable landing spots for operations such as D-day.

Today the club enjoys a high reputation for its organisation of World and National Championships, Olympic trials and open events, and has recently been awarded a substantial lottery grant to improve and develop the facilities on offer. With the club set to become an integral part of English Institute of Sport, we can expect it to be producing more world class sailors in the future.

Hayling Island – Venue Guide

hayling island yacht club

Written by Tom Morris – Mozzy Sails

As one of only four RYA coastal Centres of Excellence, Hayling Island Sailing Club is one of the leading sailing clubs in the UK and an internationally renowned championship venue.

The club itself is located on Sandy (Black) Point, the very southeast corner of Hayling, a barrier Island sat between Langstone and Chichester Harbours. Situated at the entrance to Chichester Harbour racing can take place within the sheltered water of the harbour and while that option is available in the NoR this venue guide will focus on the more traditional championship course outside in either Bracklesham Bay to the east or Hayling Bay to the west.

Let’s start where we have most certainty! Despite Canute’s best efforts in 1028AD the tides have continued to poor in and out of Chichester Harbour and the Eastern Solent with reassuring predictability.

The tidal situation for the Anniversary Regatta is the preferred scenario for all championships with neap tides producing slower currents and allowing the morning high to ebb away carrying the fleet out to the course areas and returning them on the flood after a pleasant day’s yachting. The slower flood tide is also a much more friendly vehicle for navigating the famous Chichester Bar should the breeze build.

Out on the course areas and with our first start at midday on Friday and Saturday the easterly flowing current will have established itself and continuing in that direction until two hours before the evening high. So, unless there are some extreme postponements we should not have any changes in flow direction to watch for.

On Sunday, with the morning high at 0945 and potentially an earlier start at 1100 it is possible that we will be racing in some westerly going current for the first race, but expect that to change between just after midday.

On both courses expect the tidal flow to increase as you move out of the bays. On neap tides this means going from a barely perceptible 0.1 knots deep within the bays where protected from the main Solent flow to a lay line destroying 0.5 knots further out.

Which way pays?

  • Southerly : On both courses as you progress up the course expect more cross current, providing a very small lift on port further up the course. Be wary of getting to the port lay line too soon as it’s easy to be swept above and find yourself reaching in.
  • Downwind if the course is square then port gybe will be longer one and the port gate up tide.
  • Gentle southerlies do turn into stiff southwesterlies in a sea breeze and then the very suitable tidal shift mentioned above is very much outweighed by the persistent righty (tip: check Chimet for temperature dip to confirm the sea breeze).
  • Southwestly: If it’s a prevailing gradient SW wind then expect some turbulence off the Isle of Wight and significant shifts from clouds. Keeping an eye on favourable shifts will likely outweigh any tidal gains during neaps.
  • If it is a south-westerly sea breeze, then expect it to progress to WSW and if in doubt work your way right.  ((tip: check Chimet for temperature dip to confirm the sea breeze).
  • Westerly: Mosty typically the sea breeze won’t track quite as far as west so you are usually dealing with a gradient wind. In this direction you will be beating against the tide, so getting some relief by heading right and inshore is a good percentage move. The exception to this is if you have low clouds with are oscillating the breeze, in which case follow your compass numbers.
  • If it is getting windy then at low tide the right-hand side of the course can be significantly flatter giving a decent speed edge where the winner banks filter out solent chop usually leaving the SE swell that wraps around the Isle of Wight.
  • North-westerly: Pretty rare wind direction and you’re really affected by the land. At neap tides I don’t see any situation where a tidal gain could outweigh the shifts so keep your eye on the compass numbers.
  • Northerly : Oh dear, this isn’t what we’ve come to Hayling for! Toward the top of the course, it will be shifty, as the wind rolls over the buildings. There isn’t really any significant topography to order the chaos so just keep your head up.
  • In this scenario on possible feature will be the cross current at the start further offshore leading to build up of boats at the committee boat end.
  • North easterly : Cold. My only pro tip here is after leaving the bar to carry your beer right around the club where there is nice sunny sheltered seating on the southern side.
  • East to South East: Seemingly becoming more common . A very nice direction where swell and wind chop align for some of the venue’s best conditions. The wind is usually rock-solid stable with very little in the way of clouds. Possibly a small gain by going right into what will now be a favourable flow. Be fast.

Richard & Justin SL16 Island Cup

Well done to the 5 brave crews that ventured out today. Chimet and Cambermet both show sustained F5 with F6 gusts for the duration of the race which combined with significant swell in the Langstone channel to make for some spectacular sailing and fraught landings at the finish. Only 3 boats completed both legs. Richard and Justin completed a particularly rapid 2nd leg to take 1st place overall after placing second behind Steve and Jennie on the first leg. Of note were 3rd place finishers Kieron and Ben putting winter training to good use.

Race 2 course

After a dramatic start to the season (Woody won the first race in his brand new boat), normal service was resumed last Sunday with Richard and Justin taking the win on a club SL16, closely followed by Clive W on his FX One.

Conditions were a bit lighter than forecast (F2-3) - but there was enough to complete 2 laps of inner, outer, wreck with a fairway finish in 2 hours or less.

The new Mulberry starboard channel marker Langstone

A good start to the season with a few boats braving the chilly NNE wind. After an upwind start, the course was set to head toward the harbour to round the new "Mulberry" starboard channel marker before heading back out of the channel to the Fairway mark. 2 laps of Outer -> Inner -> Wreck followed, before a final upwind leg to the finish line. The wind was consistently F4-5 blowing offshore with the inevitable wind shifts, gusts, and holes.

Glassy conditions for HFSC autumn series racing

A very unpromising forecast may have put a few people off but 6 boats signed on for some light-wind short course racing on a glorious warm sunny day.

Some patience was required and the wait saw one boat drop out but eventually the first race commenced with a beach start at 13:10. From the club start line, the fleet headed for a triangle - sausage - triangle course around marks expertly laid off Fort Cumberland (and the nudist beach) by Rene and Felicity on the support boat.

Clive S rounding NW Sinah Race 10

Making the most of a full spring tide, a harbour pursuit race was the order of the day. Following a similar course to race 1 back in May, part of the challenge was finding the 3 course marks - Salterns, Rod, and North West Sinah - all channel marks making for a broad triangle in the widest part of the harbour. The downwind leg from NW Sinah to Salterns was the shortest and with Salterns to Rod being too beamy to hoist a kite, the course in theory favoured the 2 sail boats.

Roy Stickley Trophy

Lighter than expected winds called for a short inshore course to ensure the fleet didn't end up stranded out in the middle of the solent and so 2 race marks were laid beyond the outfall for a course of 5 sausage laps. On the whole it worked out well but a 180 degree wind-shift half way through the race, which was marked with a 5 lull minute followed by a unexpectedly strong gusts, proved challenging for all.

RYA training at HFSC

A decent F4-5 blowing from the west meant more chop than expected for a seafronts race, following (or attempting to follow) the traditional course upwind around Fairway to the "Castle" channel marker (just off Southsea Castle), downwind all the way to West Pole just off Chichester Harbour entrance, then upwind again around Fairway back to the club finish.

The long upwind slogs against short period chop were uncomfortable for some but downwind for the entire length of Southsea and Hayling seafronts was a blast for the spinnaker boats.

Pacific with Clive, Miranda, and Wesley

F4-5 forecast cross offshore (but mostly blowing straight up the solent from the west) and low-tide presented a good opportunity to run a 3 forts race following the traditional course of Horse Sand to starboard, Spitbank to port, No Man's Land to port, then passing Horse Sand to port on the return to the club finish line. We tend to think of this as a big race but even with limited chances to fly the kite, Richard and Charlie (F18) completed the race in just over 1 hour and 6 minutes.

Heavy weather races

Windy day at HFSC

It's always a shame when we don't get to race especially after making a real effort to get to the club. But if there's any doubt that it was a bit too "heavy" yesterday please have a look at the graph below. Back in 2020 I plotted the wind speed, gust, and direction as recorded by Chimet for a couple of windy races both of which were at the limit of what any of us were OK to sail in. I hoped to get an idea of what we'd experienced for comparison and for future reference.

New Roof & Cladding secures main boat shed future.

As part of our programme of continued investment a new roof and cladding has been added to our main boat shed.

Built in 1935 the current shed has stood for some 87 years. It’s longevity is a testament to the quality of workmanship and materials that were used when it was built. Whilst the structure of the shed itself is sound, it recently become clear that work was needed on the roof and cladding, so the decision was made to make a long term investment and replace the whole exterior. Crews work to transform Harriet Island for Minnesota Yacht Club Festival

By Ubah Ali

July 17, 2024 / 10:53 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. — From major floods to a major festival — work is underway to transform St. Paul's Harriet Island into an oasis for festivalgoers.

Around Harriet Island, you may hear heavy machinery now, but on Friday it'll be artists like Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers rocking the stage .

"It's surreal, I sent a pic to the mayor (Melvin Carter) and I can't believe that (stage) is in our park right now," said St. Paul Parks and Recreation Director Andy Rodriguez.

Rodriguez's shock is justified given Harriet Island was flooded after weeks of torrential rain.

The Mississippi River spilled onto the island, swallowing the playground and forcing 11 events to be canceled.

Rodriguez said there was concern for a moment and city leaders and festival organizers did meet to explore other options.

But a stretch of warm days and clear skies arrived just in time.

"We are in really good shape heading into the weekend," he smiled.

Despite water receding, it took a lot to get the island ready for 60,000 people.

"We've probably had 30 plus people down here every day consecutively for about a week and a half, two weeks, getting site prepared," said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez says crews put in countless hours removing silt, checking electrical wiring and making sure park structures were still in good shape.

"We've done everything we need to do in terms of testing, compliance, and inspection and we are ready to go," he said.

Wednesday evening C3 music festival crews were hard at work before Friday's opening act.

Rodriguez says he's excited for one of the biggest festivals to take place.

"Not only great for this park but downtown St. Paul, city as a whole, businesses, hotels it's bring back activation down to the space," he said.
