‘Belle Aventure ‘ Will Not Race

The ocean match race between two classic yachts— Belle Aventure and Spirit of Bermuda— was broken this week when Belle’s captain Dave Thompson notified the Marion Bermuda Race organizers that they would not be able to race in the 645-mile crossing to Bermuda on June 14 th . Spirit, the big blue Bermuda sloop had anticipated the challenge of a 645-mile match race in the new Classic Yacht Division against the 94-foot Fife Ketch Belle Aventure sailed by an all New England crew.

This leaves the fleet with 37 boats in the Founders Division and one in the new Classic Yacht Division. Spirit of Bermuda is the largest boat, with Founder’s Division entry Shindig, an Andrews 68 entered by Mass Maritime, 44 feet shorter but perhaps faster in some conditions. This should be the battle for line honors at St David’s Lighthouse, Bermuda

The smallest boat is Roust, a Sea Sprite 34, sailed by Ian Gumprecht of Oyster Bay, NY.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances with the owners’ schedules,” Thompson wrote to the organizers, “S/Y Belle Aventure will not be able to sail to Bermuda this year during the Marion to Bermuda race. We were looking forward to racing, but will have to hold off for a different year. Both the crew and the owners apologize for any inconveniences this may cause and wish you all luck in the race this year.”

Upon learning of the withdrawal, Bermudian Preston Hutchings said, “Their withdrawal is disappointing. Nevertheless, we will have a safe and fun time sailing Spirit to Bermuda and competing for the Blue Water Sailing Club Board of Governors’ Trophy.” The trophy is awarded to the yacht with the shortest elapsed time. Hutchings had been looking forward to matching up against another classic yacht for this race. In 2012 Spirit of Bermuda had also sailed as the only classic.

Back in February 2012, Hutchings was participating in a Bermuda Sloop Foundation fundraiser, trying to raise money for Spirit of Bermuda and to save himself from walking the plank. He asked Alan Burland, co-founder of the foundation about the possibility of someone chartering Spirit for the next Marion Bermuda Race. The charter price was settled in a few days and Hutchings and his friend Patrick McGee of Dallas TX took the plunge, but not off the plank.

They took a joint charter for the 2013 race and are set to start at 12:10PM on June 14.

McGee had once told Hutchings that he would like to race to Bermuda with his family. Going on a typical boat with McGee and his sons wasn’t really a possibility so the idea lay dormant for years. Now that they had Spirit, a boat that would need a crew of 21, the dream was rekindled.

McGee will be joined by his son William. Hutchings will be joined by his two sons William and Alistair. They will also be joined by another family… navigator and executive director of Team Adventure Larry Rosenfeld, his wife Amy and their son Willie.

Hutchings and McGee have also endowed the division for American Sail Training Association (ASTA) rated boats and have dedicated the division winner’s trophy in the memory of Ed Williams, the former captain of Sir Bayard Dill’s yacht the Dutchess of Devonshire.

Alan Burland commented on Ed Williams role in making the Spirit dream come true: “Ed Williams Sr. was a wonderful Bermudian sailor, ambassador, and friend of Spirit.” Burland had begun his eulogy at Williams’ funeral by saying “Captain Ed Williams was a loyal and steadfast supporter of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation… Capt. Ed wanted to help young Bermudians to learn real life long skills, to build character, to work together, to be resilient, and to excel – the very lessons he learnt so well.” Ed Williams Jr. will be aboard for the race.

This is the second “Bermuda” race for Spirit. In 2012 she sailed Newport Bermuda as the sole entry in the Traditional Division with a largely Bermuda youth crew, young people who had trained aboard her as part of their island educational program. Spirit is a sail training vessel manned by Bermuda schoolboys and schoolgirls, sailing masters and teachers. It is a seagoing classroom that teaches both an educational curriculum and life lessons.

The 2013 Marion Bermuda Race for Spirit will be quiet different. She will be pushed harder this time by a more experienced crew and the crew hopes to cross the finish line of Bermuda’s St. David’s Lighthouse first. Hutchings, this year’s skipper, was first to finish in 2007 with his modern 42-foot Swan Morgan’s Ghost.

Hutchings is bringing aboard 20 other sailors this time to go for the goal. 14 have multiple Bermuda Race experience, 2 have extensive offshore experience in other venues and 4 are experienced inshore sailors. Co-charterer McGee and his son and a friend Dan Routman are all inshore sailors from Texas. Oliver Sarkozy, brother of the former French President, is an inshore sailor as well.

Spirit’s  biggest and closest competition for line honors will be from a more modern cruiser-racer, an Andrews 68 named Shindig. The proof of the pudding is the performance. Follow Spirit Of Bermuda and all the other yachts in the Marion Bermuda Race with the Yellow Brick tracker program available on the Marion Bermuda web site— http://www.marionbermuda.com/

All in Bermuda are welcome to share in the post-race festivities and come down to the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club to walk the docks and see all of the yachts that have sailed from Marion in the classic ocean race. Celebrate the week of the solstice at RHSADC, Bermuda Style.

About the Marion Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race Association

Since its inception in 1977, the biennial Marion Bermuda Race has been a premier 645 mile ocean race and sailing event which appeals to a broad range of cruising and racing enthusiasts.  The spirit of the race is one focused on Family and Fun, and all yachts and crew are participating for the joy and pleasure of sailing, competition, and the camaraderie that accompanies such an offshore event.

The Marion Bermuda Race encourages the development of blue water sailing skills on seaworthy yachts that can be handled safely offshore with limited crew.  The Marion Bermuda Race is a 501(c)(3) organization and among other educational efforts, supports and encourages Youth Sailing programs.  The Marion to Bermuda Race is organized and run entirely by hundreds of volunteering members of The Beverly Yacht Club (BYC), The Blue Water Sailing Club (BWSC) and The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club (RHADC) for the Marion Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race Association.

Fairlie: the Hamble yard that changed classic sailing forever

belle aventure yacht

We look back at the transformative work of Fairlie Yachts, the famous Hamble yard that shut down earlier this year.

Full article, from the August issue, one sale. Click here to subscribe. Photos by Waterline Media

I t was a sad day when Duncan Walker and Paul Spooner finally shut up shop in Hamble and put Fairlie Yachts into liquidation at the end of February 2016. Many readers will know that running any boatbuilding company has been very hard work over the past few years in particular, but it will be no consolation to list the other casualties that Fairlie joined in the sector. Looking back over the quarter of a century of boatbuilding first as Fairlie Restorations and latterly as Fairlie Yachts, the team was responsible for some great projects; but there were always challenges.

Duncan

The story started almost exactly 30 years ago. In the late 1980s a Swiss businessman called Albert Obrist owned an incomparable collection of Ferraris. What marked his collection out as one of, if not the, finest in the world was the quality of the restoration work that Obrist undertook. In a world already known for accuracy and high standards, Obrist raised it to another level. It was said that if the original leather used for a seat came from a particular breed of cows, Obrist would insist the restorers used the same, preferably from the descendants of the very same herd.

Despite having disposed of most of the collection in the early 1990s, the fact they were ‘Obrist’ Ferraris means the cars are still sought after today. In December 1985 Obrist bought a rather tired schooner, and his crew nursed her from Italy to Southampton. What they did with her has passed into classic yacht legend, and helped start the whole classic yacht revival.

The schooner was of course the 1931 Fife Altair , and her crew was Paul Goss, Duncan Walker, Donn Costanzo, Jeff Law, and Olive Adshead (the latter three the proud if by then rather impoverished owners of the Fife ‘ Sheevra ’ ex Clio , whose restoration had been noted and admired by Obrist). Along with the skills of the workforce at Southampton Yacht Services, a benchmark project was completed, restoring her as closely as possible to her original condition. Under Goss and then Steve ‘The Dog’ Hammond, Altair became the standard bearer for a revival of interest in classic yachts in general and in Fifes in particular.

Obrist was just getting started with Altair though. He had a vision of restoring Fifes just as he had Ferraris; with no compromise, authentic in every detail. He and Duncan Walker established Fairlie Restorations in the back of a large hanger at Hamble Yacht Services in 1990. They recruited two of the key members of the SYS team, shipwrights Nick Bowyer and Kevin Jepp, and formed a small team dedicated purely to restoration of Fife yachts. Obrist employed a young yacht broker at Camper & Nicholsons, William Collier, who had a passion for the classics, to seek out and buy him examples of Fife’s work; and in 1991 Duncan (with the help of a return to the Clyde of Altair ), managed to buy the bulk of the Fife archive of drawings from Archie MacMillan.

The first project was the 15-Metre, Tuiga . Spotted in the small ads for sale in Cyprus, Walker nursed her back to the Hamble and the team of about half a dozen set to work, with Obrist as the patron. Obrist’s attention to detail was extraordinary. At one stage he was said to be investigating buying land in Egypt to grow the correct type of cotton to replicate her original sails; that didn’t happen in the end, but Ratsey & Lapthorn (her original sailmakers in 1909) were persuaded to replicate the stencils of the period rather than use their famous red semi-circle badges on the tacks of her sails; and, most remarkably, to hand-stitch the entire mainsail. Looking back it is easy to forget just what a brave idea it was to rebuild a First Rule 15-M boat, 75ft (22.8m) on deck, tiller steered with no winches and the best part of 4,000 sqft (371m 2 ) of sail to control. Walker and his team reached out to the likes of Harry Spencer and Spencer Rigging, and thankfully found the skills were only dormant and not totally forgotten. Heading out on to the Solent for her first sail trails in the autumn of 1992 most people understood Walker’s decision to fit her with (removable but unoriginal) stanchions and lifelines (Obrist, when he saw them, was said to be less understanding).

Quite a legacy: Mariquita and Tuiga on the racecourse

Alongside Tuiga there was a growing collection of yachts awaiting restoration including Miquette (12-Metre), The Lady Anne (15-Metre), Fulmar (8-Metre) and Mariquita (19-Metre). Even by Obrist’s standards it was an audacious scheme and as soon as Tuiga was finished in 1993 she was for sale. Eventually she was bought by the Yacht Club de Monaco, where she has been a perfect figurehead for the club ever since.

Friends of Obrist, Ernst & Doris Klaus, then approached Fairlie, keen to have a yacht restored for a round-the-world trip. Duncan was following the stop-start work on Kentra , a 1923 Fife ketch in Scotland, and finally managed to buy her at auction and bring her south. Her complete restoration, to Lloyd’s, like Tuiga , took two years; in the meantime, the Klauses also had Fulmar restored. Kentra was relaunched in 1995 and duly made her circumnavigation.

Re-coppering the hull of Kentra

Those projects eased Fairlie into a more commercial way of working, but it was still practically unique in being dedicated to restoration. Work on Belle Aventure, Madrigal , the 8-Metres Osborne, Carron II and the Morgan Giles Siris , and the complete restoration of The Lady Anne followed in the 1990s. A strip-plank new build of the gaff cutter Nomad designed by Ed Burnett and Nigel Irens was in some respects anomalous, but pointed to the future. There were some difficult periods but its work was widely recognised for its high quality and it retained a reputation for authenticity and attention to detail. Agnelli, the head of Fiat at the time, had seen Tuiga ’s deck and admired it; when he came to build his Frers carbon race boat Stealth at Green Marine in 1996, he requested that Fairlie lay the deck, which it duly did, along with building and fitting what was then a radically light carbon/nomex interior. Based as it was on the core of time-served craftsmen who had done their time as apprentices at Camper & Nicholsons in the 1970s, the working environment at Fairlie was often gritty, not to say old-fashioned; and over the years a few failed to make the grade. The many who did had an excellent grounding in traditional boatbuilding skills, and most if not all find themselves in command of very marketable skills. That in itself is a notable legacy.

The aft cabin on Mariquita

The 15-Metre Hispania was also rescued at the 11th hour by Collier and a search for a new owner for her was started. That eventually culminated in Fairlie rebuilding the hull before her fit-out in Palma and re-joining the nascent 15-Metre fleet again in 2011.

In 2001, the restoration of what many think of as Fairlie’s flagship, Mariquita , was started. The last known survivor of the class, she was the largest project the yard undertook. With the active involvement of Obrist and Klaus, it was little wonder than she was restored with precious little in the way of concessions. Relaunched in 2004 and new from keel to truck, her skipper Jim Thom (ex skipper of Kentra ) embraced the purist philosophy and was a tireless advocate of sailing her in the traditional manner. She has made her mark in regattas across Europe, one of the most photographed and recognisable classics.

Other refits followed including work on Moonbeam III, Hallowe’en and Altair ; and the complete restorations of the First Rule 8-Metre Lucky Girl , the 1897 Cork Harbour One-Design Jap , and the GL Watson-designed dayboat St Patrick . Work for large classic motor yacht restorations such as Nahlin, Bluebird and Shemara also showcased the skills of the team. In addition, Paul Spooner’s own designs for new yachts made regular appearances. The first was a long-keeled design called Niebla in 2003. The next in 2011 was the Fairlie 55, a fin-and-bulb-keel design that was soon on the Med circuit in the Spirit of Tradition class. The last example was a 53ft (16.2m) design intended for single-handed offshore cruising called La Dama , which proved a challenging project over the best part of three years. Despite ongoing work on a new-build houseboat, also to Spooner’s design, a lack of future orders and an increasingly difficult financial situation finally prompted the closure. It was presaged when Fairlie Restorations when into receivership in 2012; re-established as Fairlie Yachts on the same site and with most of the same workforce, the new company faced many of the same difficulties as before and despite a long fight, eventually it proved unsustainable.

St Patrick

Following Obrist’s vision, Fairlie was instrumental in establishing validity of the idea of purist restoration, especially in a commercial setting; it regularly set new standards for the quality of its work, and has left a fine legacy in terms of yachts, skills and people.

Sailing: Match Broken For Spirit & Belle Aventure

[Written by Talbot Wilson]

The ocean match race between two classic yachts — Belle Aventure and Spirit of Bermuda — was broken this week when Belle’s captain Dave Thompson notified the Marion Bermuda Race organizers that they would not be able to race in the 645-mile crossing to Bermuda on June 14th.

Spirit, the big blue Bermuda sloop had anticipated the challenge of a 645-mile match race in the new Classic Yacht Division against the 94-foot Fife Ketch Belle Aventure sailed by an all New England crew.

2012 Newport Bermuda Race

Nevertheless, we will have a safe and fun time sailing Spirit to Bermuda and competing for the Blue Water Sailing Club Board of Governors’ Trophy.”

The trophy is awarded to the yacht with the shortest elapsed time.

Follow Spirit Of Bermuda and all the other yachts in the Marion Bermuda Race with the Yellow Brick tracker program available on the Marion Bermuda website .

RADISSON Boats

Seriously now, how it is even possible to have a girl in the tickets issuing white building , in the Gorky Park Pier, who is exceptional RUDE and she doesn't know even a simple word of English and she seem that she doesn't care to sell any tickets to tourists ?! We left the ticket office because she couldn't answer to anything and because she was really aggressive because we don't speak Russian!!! Despite the fact that we were really kind and smiling, trying to speak to her. We found completely unacceptable the fact that they work with tourists but they demand from them to know Russian! Even though, a kind and gently mannered person will find a way to explain something. Unfortunately the specific ...lady was a savage-like one, coming from the mountains and never having met other people again. What a shame.

Dear Efstathios D! Thank you for your feedback! First of all we are so sorry about this situation! Next time we are highly recommend to purchas tickets online/ Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

Starting out for an 8:00 p.m. cruise on a poor or rather dull August 1st day, we had to wait for a later boarding at about 20:15! We were shepherded upstairs to the upper deck, which was thankfully enclosed with glass windows, with seats facing both forward and backwards or better… fore and aft facing! As we reached the top deck (about 7 steps, but steep) we walked about 6 meters and had to jog to the right, in order not to disturb a mic boom and speaker setup, denoting our impending entertainment for the evening! 2 chairs, padded, adorned with 2 very well used 6-string guitars… plus a load of other equipment, including 5' high speakers and amps, etc. My party (4 of us) including my wife, her half-sister with her husband, whom we had only known about 14 months, after belatedly finding out about each other, who were visiting us from a European country for a few days! Super people! My wife had arranged this trip at the tentative request of her half-brother-in-law. The boat was nothing special as far as comfort was concerned, but we had front seats! I was a little worried about volume from the massive speakers! No worry needed! We left, with perhaps one third full of passengers only and the 2 chairs were almost immediately occupied by 2 men, pleasant looking, both nicely dressed, who picked up the guitars and the first, Dmitry, began to narrate our passage along the Moscow River. Shortly afterwards, the narration comfortable allowed the introduction of the first song, with basic chords being played by Dmitry with Alexei playing, expert accompaniment to Dmitry's vocals. He thoroughly enjoyed his role, as did Dmitry. For 21/2 hours, we plied the river, with an ever deepening dusk, bringing forth romantic Russian songs by well-known Russian composers, making the river trip a really enjoyable experience, particularly as both my wife and I are both fans of this type of music along with our newly-found family. The engine noises could hardly be heard, the cabin was pleasantly warm, but not hot, and tea and coffee was served an hour before landing. Docking happened at about 22:20 with no rush and we alighted at the same point that we had boarded… a very enjoyable evening all told! Thank you Moscow River Tours or Art_Stolitsa!

Dear granmar! Thank you for your feedback! We will be happy to see you again. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

It’s very bad that when we enter the boat they told us go upstairs! Then a russian guiding started to talk from the starting point! No respect to other nationalities or tourists languages! At least do something in international languages! My money went for nothing Understand nothing in this beautiful country’s History!!!!!!

Dear Mrmretta! Thank you for your feedback! It is helps us to be better. We will start our English speaking guided cruise soon. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

Loud music. No service. Look like that they did not want to sell anything. Taste less food. Exhaust in the resturant. No safety informasjon. Cheap tour Cheap food. Crappy service. Try some other place.

Dear Tore S! Thank you for your review. It helps us become better. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

Today we decided to do a river cruise to orientate us to Moscow. With no knowledge of Russian we purchased an audio guide. We walked 9kms in very hot weather to get to the departure point and asked several people for directions. Number one frustration is that muscovites don't get tourism or customer service and look straight thru you. We finally found the wharf and with several boats departing we got the same 'look straight through you' until finally we had to shame someone into finding our boat the Cahta Mapnr, which then departed 35 mins later then the booking agent advised. We went to the top deck which had no cover and tried to find some shade. And you guessed it the audio didn't work. The staff had no idea how to handle a disgruntled passenger and i got nowhere asking for a refund. Go back to the booking agent they said to which i replied ' how would they know i didnt get what i paid for. I have worked in tourism for most of my working life so know a bit about the industry. You have a wonderful product but you must train your operators! There was one young man,Bec, who tried valiantly to placate me and he will go far. I admit I lost my cool after being ignored by so many and frying in the hot sun and not being able to identify the magnificent buildings..

Dear Julie B! Thank you for your feedback! First of all we are so sorry about this situation! Next time we are highly recommend to purchas tickets online. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

No tour info in English. Mostly Russians on this boat. We were the only non-Russian tourists. If you don't buy the ticket online, they charge more than double the price at the pier. (If you are looking at a tablet or computer screen you will see this info, but not on a phone screen.) As a result many customers were complaining and arguing with the ticket sellers. The boat was playing LOUD unbearably awful music. Website stated that music would be played and we were expecting Russian folk tunes with balalaikas. Instead, we got really bad rock with English lyrics. The cruise was 2+ hours and it would have been impossible to enjoy with the noise. It was so bad that we asked for our money back before the boat departed. They said they could not provide a refund because the tickets had been torn already. After we caused a minor insurrection --luckily we had a Russian friend with us -- the captain turned off the music. (He said he didn't like it either but he was required to play it.) There are numerous river tour companies in Moscow and most seem to be in the same price range. I recommend asking them if the boats have outdoor shaded places where you will not be subjected to loud music.

Dear JanetOO! Thank you for your feedback! On our website we have all information in English. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

About company

Antila Yachts is a private shipyard (yacht producer) located in Poland. We are a family company, established and created from our passion to sailing as well as our 30-year business experience in a private sector. During this time we have managed to gather (complete) a 50-persons professional team, whose experience has resulted in the best quality of our products and has become the source of the Company success. Antila yachts are appreciated in all European countries. The quality of our yachts has been recognized at various trade fairs. Our cooperation with the best designers and leading suppliers of the equipment, technological improvements, aiming at perfection as well as our efforts to meet customers’ expectations are the basic qualities of our Company.

Boats models

  • Antila 24.4
  • Antila 26CC

Antila 22 has a very modern design line, which resembles its elder sister Antila 24.4.

Its users comfort was the main aim to be achieved during the designing process. There is a comfortable double bunk (berth) in the bow part (zone), and the bunk under the cockpit is not smaller than in Antila 24 yacht. We also provide a functional and original kambuz with a double-burner cooker and a table top combined with a sink. On the opposite side – a sanitary cabin. In the midship area there are two sofa-beds. We wish to emphasize that the height in the mess room is 1,78m. Antila 22 is the only boat, which having the length of 22 feet, offers a full standing position for the crew members inside it. Outside there is a two-meter long cockpit with open stern where 6 to 8 persons can have a comfortable seat. The cockpit guarantees enjoying the evenings also with guests from other boats. The yacht will be equipped with a steel sliding keel and an engine fixed on a pantograph.

Our constructor Jacek Daszkiewicz has applied an innovative shape of the hull bottom to make the yacht fast. We also assume very efficient (high) initial and final stability to ensure safety of sailing.

TECHNICAL DATA

PREMIERE 2017

The world premiere of Antila 24.4 took place at sailing fairs in Düsseldorf held from 21.01.2017 till 29.01.2017. Antila 24.4 is an interesting offer mainly for private shipowners – due to its easy one-person operation servicing. Nevertheless, thanks to its spacious interior, it is also appreciated by charter companies. The interior design is not much different from that of Antila 26. There is enough space for 6 full-size bunks, a kambuz and a toilet. The charter version can have additional folding bunks. The deck has been built with a focus on safe and comfortable sailing. All ropes (lines) for sails handling have been connected to the cockpit. The yacht is equipped with full stabilization of a mast together with a gate to lay it down, a rotational keel and a rudder blade vertically lifted (hoisted). A spacious cockpit and a relatively low superstructure ensure excellent sight distance while sailing. Antila 24.4 has received a reward for the best product in its class granted by the Polish Chamber of Marine and Water Sports. In a competition Land Rover Polish Yachts organized by the monthly magazine „Sails and Land Rover” it obtained the title of the Yacht of 2018.

The new product launched in 2012 by the Antila Shipyard from Radom was the sailing yacht 26CC – a gold medal winner at the Boatshow fairs 2012 in Łódź. This yacht was also granted the (First Prize) Main Reward in the category of Charter Yacht 2012 at the Mazovian Fairs of Water Sports in Giżycko.

The boat, whose style is fairly similar to that of Antila 27, has been designed by the construction team of Adam & Michał Orych. The new design of Antila 26CC is classical and futuristic at the same time. The boat looks marvelous from each side, particularly when you look at its shape with the chine of a hull and a water-line. This yacht, as any other Antila models, focus on safety as well as high comfort provided both in a cockpit and in a mess room.

Ergonomic, spacious and very carefully planned cockpit guarantees comfort during sailing and also during mooring. Wide half decks enable freedom of moving around the deck. Slender rigging with large area (surface) of the sails as well as modern shape of the hull guarantee very good nautical parameters. The innovations applied in the mesa room allowed for dividing the interior of the boat into a kambuz, a separate toilet compartment and two independent lockable cabins with double bunks (berths). Already at a first glance the yacht makes an impression of being a symbol of comfort. Antila 26CC is a product which was created with application (usage) of the best available materials – the luxury and stylish interior, comfortable seats, well constructed mattresses with perfectly made stitching, the best quality materials with alcantry upholstery and its elements in different colours. Application of LED type lighting makes the interior well-lighted at minimal energy consumption. The floor and the cockpit boarded with Teak (Tectona grandis) wood imported from Myanmar (Burma), India and Laos add to the complete feeling of luxury and comfort. We are proud of having created a yacht which satisfies even the most demanding tastes of sailors. Our yacht is manouevrable (good-turning), fast and safe both for private shipowners and for charter companies. Antila 26CC makes it possible to taste the world.

Antila 27 designed by the recognized European designers Michał and Adam Orych is a yacht whose idea has been based on a long-term experience of our designing team. It is a modern boat which follows the latest world trends. Attractive, dynamic body of the yacht is combined with ergonomic shaping of the deck and carefully elaborated details, which reflect discreet sport type elegance and sport characteristics.

The yacht is dedicated to both charter companies and private shipowners whose special requirements have been fulfilled by optimization of production with application (usage) of the latest available materials and technological solutions. Exceptionally easy operating and servicing of the boat is an effect of using sophisticated solutions and possibility of adding more options which would increase the boat’s standards. The interior of the yacht – 1,86m high – is large and arranged in such a way that it enables even up to 10 people to stay together in the mess room. The improved transverse stability allows for increasing the sails area (surface) and sailing speed even at lighter breeze, giving also the feeling of comfort and safety in more difficult conditions. The shape of the hull has been designed to enable reaching high speeds as well as good manoeuvrability (turning) and ease of steering – all of this providing real joy of sailing. Antila 27 is also produced in a full sea version for those who like to be particularly challenged.

Antila 33 is a continuation of the successful lines of Antila 27 and Antila 26CC which are appreciated both in Poland and at foreign markets. Modern and dynamic outline with a hull length of 10,5m and the characteristic chine of the hull make this yacht to be clearly distinguished from other vessels. Spacious and ergonomic cockpit with a fixed table and a separated steersman’s station (stand) with two steering wheels, together with easy sails handling make sailing by this yacht pleasant and comfortable for its captain and his crew. Asymmetrical companion way allows for easier rigging operating and much better interior arrangement. Three lockable cabins, each with a vestibule and a fairly large wardrobe, plus full-size bunks in the mess room allow for comfortable sailing even for a quite numerous crew. Enlarged kambuz, a toilet with a shower and non-collision communication in the yacht’s interior, also in the centerboard version – are the additional advantages that were possible to be achieved by using the asymmetrical companion way. Taking the best possible advantage of the yacht’s width and its relatively high ballast coefficient (ratio) enabled for providing very good transverse stability which in relation to the slender rigging, large area (surface) of the sails and optimum hull guarantee very good nautical parameters. Antila 33 is a proposal for those sailors who appreciate luxury and modernity on inland and sea waters.

W plebiscycie miesięcznika Żagle i Land Rover zdobyła tytuł Jacht Roku 2018.

Antila 33.3 review: The ideal lakeland explorer

This Polish swing-keel boat with clever folding mast system is perfect for exploring the vast Masurian lakes

Lake sailing in Poland is very different to coastal sailing. In many ways it’s more relaxing. There are no tides to contend with and because you can find a marina or pontoon wherever you are, there’s no requirement to plan a day’s sailing. You can simply go where the wind takes you. When you’ve had enough, just beach-up or anchor in a creek.

Anchored in a creek in Masuria

But you need your wits about you too. Sailors have to be tuned-in to sudden wind shifts and lulls, blasts between islands that fizzle into nothing, or vice versa. Some lakes are so big you can barely see the shore, connected by canals so shallow it’s easy to run aground. Masts, keels and rudders go up and down all day – and this is where boat design gets clever. Self-charter is possible, but it certainly helps to have a local skipper… and a forgiving boat.

Dziewiata Lady M – our Antila 33.3 charter boat: Patrycja Tomala Photography

For our adventure with Undiscovered Sailing , our hosts Wojtek and Patrycja Tomala chose an Antila 33.3. Along with the Maxus, this is one of the most popular charter yachts on the lakes.

Antila Yachts is a Polish family-run business, producing boats from 24 to 33ft. One of the largest yachts you’ll see in the region, the Antila 33.3 has many features that make lake sailing easier. Whilst our boat Dziewiata [the 9th] Lady M didn’t come with a radio or electronics – nor even a wind indicator or compass, it did have a bow-thruster, diesel heating and a very nifty folding mast system.

antila yacht

The mast can go up or down in 10 minutes. Photo: Ali Wood

The latter is essential, because the 180 miles of waterways – stretching from the lower Vistula to the Russian border (Kaliningrad) – are connected by canals and rivers with low bridges. We raised and lowered our mast at least twice a day, and it was a simple task thanks to the clever pulley system, aided by an electric winch.

Usually the Antila 33.3 comes with a fully battened mainsail (28.1m2) and self-tacking jib (18.5m2). However, skipper Wojtek requested a larger (23m2), genoa for our trip knowing that we were keen sailors. A gennaker/ code zero is also an option.

Twin helms and a beautiful sunset! Photo: Ali Wood

During our five-day charter we only covered a quarter of the vast lake district. Wojtek chose the northern end of the lakes for us, which was quieter (we saw just a handful of boats) with more challenging sailing due to the many islands and narrow waterways.

Buoyage was limited, and there were protected nature reserves where engines were forbidden. Under full sail Dziewiata Lady M pointed high, sailed fast and was smooth and well balanced. Even with the larger foresail she was easy to tack and gybe.

With no instruments, we sailed by line-of-sight and trimmed the sails accordingly. Or, if we just felt like a blast, we sailed around the cormorant-inhabited islands, getting as close as we dared until Wojtek told us to tack. I especially loved the twin helms, enabling us to switch to the high side for better visibility.

Mast lowering

To get from one lake to another, or to visit one of the many charming Masurian towns, we had to negotiate road bridges. The first job was to lower the boom to the deck by releasing the lazyjacks.

Next, one of us would go to the bow to remove the forestay pin and lift the A-frame whilst the other released the mast purchase line in the cockpit. This needed to be done smoothly and at a consistent pace, keeping two turns on the winch. The lowered mast then rested on a frame at the stern. The process took no more than 10 minutes.

antila yacht

Once under the bridge, we’d do the same in reverse, taking care to check no lines had got caught under the mast step as it reconnected with the deck. Wojtek continually looked in front and behind. Electric winches are great, he told us, but you need to be careful to avoid snagging as it’s too easy to damage the rig. Indeed, on the day of our arrival we saw a sorry looking ‘banana mast’ in the boatyard waiting for repair (or scrap).

When we passed a yacht raising the mast manually, I was grateful for our electric winch. A crew on the coachroof was vigorously sweating the line to help the winchman in the cockpit. It looked like hard work!

On entering the canals we turned on the engine and lifted the rudder (which can draw as little as 45cm) and keel (which reduces draft from 1.85m to 0.6m). Once raised, the keel swings into a casing that forms part of the saloon table. If you hit an underwater object, the rudder and/or keel will kick-up automatically to prevent damage. This happened whilst I was helming on the canal to Wegorzewo. I moved to the side of the canal to let a vessel past and the rudder must have caught the bank.

We lifted the rudder as we nosed into a creek. Photo: Ali Wood

Antilla also makes a seagoing version of the Antila 33.3, which is CE category B as opposed to C, and has a fixed keel among other modifications.

Skippers typically moor stern-to in Poland, and fix the bow to a trot mooring retrieved with a boat hook. This is where the Vetus bow-thruster comes in handy. Dziewiata Lady M could easily ‘stand still’ whilst we grabbed the line, or waited for a boat to pass in tight quarters. With an open side, stern and bathing platform, the Antila 33.3 is an easy boat to access from the shore or (if the weather’s nice) the water after a dip.

Accommodation

Whilst in the Med or Caribbean you might typically charter a 38ft to 46ft yacht, we had plenty of space for the four of us on our 33-footer. Laura and I both had a double cabin at the stern and Wojtek and Patrycja shared a large, double-door cabin at the bow.

antila yacht

There’s room for two in each of the aft cabins

It would be tighter with six people (two in the saloon), but still comfortable with plenty of room for luggage in the lockers. Antila claims the boat can sleep up to 10 people with a maximum payload of 910kg. However, Undiscovered Sailing sensibly caps it at six.

The interior of the Antila 33.3 is light and spacious. Photo: Ali Wood

The saloon was spacious with a large table where we spent lively evenings drinking Polish cider and playing Skip-bo. Because of the pale wood finish, 1.95m ceiling and many windows, the boat let in lots of natural light and we didn’t turn on the LED spotlights until late.

Aside from a canal boat holiday I did last Autumn, this was the first time I’ve enjoyed central heating on a charter. Though the weather was mostly pleasant, we had a few rainy days and cool evenings. The diesel-fuelled Webasto heating was a very welcome addition.

Wojtek and Patrycja Tomala of Undiscovered Sailing

I was surprised by how little we used the Yanmar 21 HP engine to charge the batteries. We did top-up using shore-power in the marinas, but happily spent a night at anchor in a creek, and a full day either side, whilst still having plenty of power for lights, heating, fridge, bow-thruster, electric winch and head.

Not having to power up instruments helped, and for me, this was a big plus-point of chartering in the Polish lakes. It felt like a luxury version of dinghy or day-sailing in a giant harbour. We were surrounded by forest and reed-fringed islands. We rarely knew what time it was and had the freedom to sail where we wanted, and enjoy the scenery and wildlife without double-checking instruments or trying to push the boat for extra knots.

Much as I enjoyed our blustery sails, one of my favourite moments was actually being becalmed. In the busy Solent I’d have no doubt put the engine on, but in Masuria, we simply drifted in silence, feeling the warmth of the sun as it beat through the clouds and listening to a pair of cuckoos call out across the water. When you don’t know how fast you’re going and your destination isn’t important, you stop caring and learn to enjoy the moment, and Dziewiata Lady M is certainly the boat for day-dreaming and relaxation.

MINŐSÉG

Túravitorlások prémium megoldásokkal

Letisztult, modern fomák

Sportos menettulajdonságok

Mi megvalósítjuk álmait!

Az Antila Yachts hajógyár egy modern, 35 éves hajógyártói tapasztalattal rendelkező, professzionális vállalkozás, ahol egy 50 fős csapat, a 24 – 34 láb közötti méretkategóriában készíti középkategóriás túravitorlásait.

A gyár sportos tulajdonságokkal rendelkező tengeri és tavi túravitorlásai nagy népszerűségnek örvendenek Európa-szerte és 2018-tól, képviseletünkön keresztül megérkeztek Magyarországra is.

Termékpalettánk - a legújabb tervezési irányelvek alapján - az elmúlt 7 évben teljesen újjászületett.

Modern, skandináv dizájnt követő konstrukcióink főtervezője a Svédországban alkotó, lengyel származású Michal Orych.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
