The prestigious design studio Vripack from Netherlands has designed a new 17m motor yacht Trawler 1700 for the active Brazilian family to explore their fast and amazing South American waters. Featuring extraordinary seagoing cruising characteristics, the new Trawler 1700 yacht is based on the well known Vripack Trawler range and is fitted with all the necessary comfort as well as water sport accessories.

Vripack´s New Trawler 1700 Yacht

Vripack´s New Trawler 1700 Yacht

The owner desires a 100% family & fun yacht which will become the first Vripack Trawler to be built in the new upcoming market in Brazil, making it 2-1 for Brazil !

The layout of the steel Trawler 1700 yacht with aluminum superstructure was designed in close deliberation with the owner. His wishes were clear: large exterior living areas to provide maximum outdoor pleasure and functional storage for several water sport accessories.

The flybridge is equipped with a newly designed radar arch and bimini above the outdoor steering position and comfortable L-seat. Aft a dinghy and sailing boat can be stored beside the crane. Along the stainless steel safety railing, Vripack has created plenty of space for surf board storage.

In the Salon on the main deck a large lounge area is situated together with a spacious galley and, just a few steps up, the professionally built wheelhouse. On the fore deck one will find a large lounge area and aft a comfortable sun protected area with a large family bench and access to the swimming platform.

The interior is designed to accommodate a family and their guests in separate cabins with several bathrooms. The lower deck is divided in to an Owners cabin with spacious bathroom in front, a portside Vip cabin with twin bed, a starboard Guest cabin with bunk bed and a separate bathroom with day head. Aft is situated a large lazarette for inflatable gadgets with integrated passarelle and a large electric hatch for easy entrance to the engine room.

The modern appearance of the Vripack 17m luxury yacht Trawler 1700 is created by the higher bulwark, the glued in windows for a more sturdy appearance and by removing the traditional dodger. This vessel with high flared bow sections is propelled by two diesel engines and with her specially designed lines plan, this semi-displacement vessel reaches a maximum speed of 12 knots. The 3500 liter fuel tanks are ample for a ship this size providing 2550 nautical miles of range at a cruising speed of 8 knots. The excellence of this Vripack design definitely brings the score back to a 2-2 draw.

Probably the best cruiser we have ever built

  • Contact your dealer

The ideal bluewater cruiser?

The Xc 47 marks the beginning of a completely new generation of XCruising. The concept is built on years of experience and a desire to accommodate the growing number of sailors looking for a true bluewater cruiser.

‘In short, Xc 47 is an elegant bluewater cruiser, built for safe and comfortable sailing on the oceans. Immense focus has been placed on the design to make shorthanded sailing safe and easy’, says Thomas Mielec, director of design & engineering at X-Yachts.

‘Many of our customers share a dream of heading off on a long cruise, often around the world. With this yacht, they will be ready and able to achieve this whenever the opportunity arises.

The ideal bluewater cruiser?

Shorthanded with ease and style

Most sailing today, even bluewater cruising, is performed with a small crew, with often just a couple of crew members, which the development team has kept in mind right from the outset of the design process. Some of the design features and functions have been seen before on other premium yachts, but on the Xc 47, they are executed with an unprecedented sense of style.

The cockpit layout has been designed to give the helmsman the capability of handling all lines. Four winches – two on each side, are positioned in front of the wheels. All relevant trim lines are led in channels under the deck from the mast to the steering position, with jammers reachable for the helmsman.

The traveller has been re-positioned from the cockpit to a position in front of the sprayhood. Apart from creating an efficient workspace, this cockpit arrangement leaves room for a comfortable living space, with the sail handling concentrated to the area at the helm station.

Near the transom, a large aft deck accommodates a comfortable full-width seating area behind the wheels, as well as a nice sunbathing area. As it should be on a true offshore yacht, the cockpit is deep, well protected, and with a closed transom.

Updated Xc design

The hull lines have maintained the deep V-shaped bow sections, generous rocker, and higher stern overhang from previous Xc models, providing the well-known comfortable seagoing characteristics. Furthermore, the aft of the Xc 47 has a modern, wider stern section, incorporating a subtle soft chine that provides extra form and stability, improved performance and more space in the aft cabins.

Updated Xc design

Carbon reinforced

The Xc 47 is built from a full vacuum infused epoxy/e-glass sandwich, together with our famous signature steel frame. Areas exposed to high loads are reinforced with carbon fiber, a part of making the yacht stronger without adding excess weight.

The first thing most people will notice when looking at the lines, is the shape of the superstructure. "We have introduced what we like to call a "semi deck saloon. This solution provides a better view of the surroundings, when under deck with more natural light, and an opportunity for multilevel floors." Says Thomas Mielec

To make sure the Xc 47 is capable of carrying provisions for long periods of time, the yacht has efficient storage volumes hidden behind the sturdy, yet elegantly crafted surfaces of the interior.

CEO Kræn Brinck Nielsen highlights, "Danish design and architecture are famous for clean and timeless style, and X-Yachts has always been a part of this tradition. X-Yacht owners often talk about a special X feeling, something that greets you every time you step on board. We know this feeling, and for us, it's a constant process to refine and enhance it each time. When looking at the Xc 47, l'm proud of how far we have come."

Interior

Cockpit features

The Xc 47 is designed with a safe, deep, closed cockpit with wide coamings with a great overview especially from the helming positions.

Steering wheels

The Steering wheels is increased from 90 cm to 100 cm in diameterand is in the same comfortable height as on the X5.6.

Dinghy & Davits

The transom door has an option of integrated davits with the new “easy launch” function.

Bowsprit design

Longer, wider and better integrated into the bow design. Option for integrated electric gennaker furler.

17 m yacht

Sail handling is controlled from the aft part of the cockpit. Haylards, reefing and control lines and sheets are led to the four standard self-tailing winches in front of the helming positions with the German mainsheet system operable from both sides.

Both the mainsheet and the genoa sheets are led through jammers, allowing you to easily free up a winch. The winches are arranged for optimal operation from the helming position when sailing shorthanded.

The low coaming aft of the wheels together with the foldable foot chocks ensure comfortable helming.

17 m yacht

Compared to the Xc 50, there is about 6 cm more space between the wheel and the aft cockpit locker, for better helming comfort.

17 m yacht

They have a capacity of 150 kg per davit and 200 kg in total. When the dinghy is hanging in the davits, there is a free view over it from the helming position, and when the dinghy is launched the davits can either lay on the bathing platform or be stored in the deep “step down” locker.

17 m yacht

Longer, wider and better integrated into the bow design. Option for integrated electric gennaker furler. Better launching of the anchor. Option for easily mountable bow ladder and hand rail for access over the bow.

Weatherly, US-17

Weatherly, US-17 photo by Billy Black

Built in 1958 according to the International Third Rule- America’s Cup.

1958-1965: Weatherly was one of three boats built for the 1958 America’s Cup Defense. She was solidly built with extensive use of laminated mahogany in the keel, stem and stern. At her best in light air, she was eliminated from the 1958 Trials. Four years later Rhodes and Luders collaborated in radical interventions: the stern was cut; weight reduced above deck, wetted surface reduced and approximately 1000 lbs were stripped from the structure and transferred to a redesigned ballast keel. In 1962, with the increase in boat speed and new skipper, Bus Mosbacher, she won the Defender Trails and the Americas Cup by a score of 4-1 vs. Gretel . She also won the Queens Cup (NYYC) and the Chandler Hovey Gold Bowl in 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1962 and the Astor Cup in 1961.

1966-1986: Weatherly was donated by Henry Mercer to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY to be used as a training vessel for cadets. She was trial horse to Columbia in 1967 and for Valiant in 1970. In the early 70’s she was again altered to race on the Great Lakes and won the Mackinac Race. In 1975 she was purchased by Lynn Summers and Alan Buchanan who kept her in Seattle, Washington. In 1981 they donated her to the Seattle Council of Boy Scouts of America.

1986-2020: George Hill, purchased her and sailed from Seattle to Florida via the Panama Canal. There, she fell from a crane on her bow and suffered severe damage to her stem planking, frames and rig. With a stay-sail and a storm trysail rigged from the mast stub to steady her, Hill brought Weatherly to Newport and gave her a complete restoration. She was actively sailed and raced in the Newport fleet tby Hill, with America’s Cup Charters .

2019: Weatherly (US-17) won the 2019 Opera House Cup at Nantucket, MA

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

Mark Zuckerberg.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

Mark Zuckerberg on a paddle board.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

the-85-metre-superyacht-areti-was-launched-by-lurssen-in-2017-credit-tom-van-oossanen

Areti: Lürssen’s 85m tour de force superyacht

Areti ’s full-beam decks and profile signal that she has room to host a crowd, or a peloton even. Her owner is a former Olympic cyclist and long-time competitor at the highest levels of road cycling. Now, among other endeavours, he sponsors a world-class team and he likes nothing better than getting his professional riders together to train and to enjoy the sports lifestyle, which does not preclude the occasional beer.

That was the nexus for his recently delivered yacht, complete with convivial bar and beer tap, and why he decided to have it built to the demanding rules of the Passenger Yacht Code (PYC). “He loves to be surrounded by family and friends and, of course, his team,” relates Andrew Winch, whose firm Winch Design created both the exterior styling and the interior design of the 85 metre Areti .

“On his last yacht [a 60.35 metre Trinity , now Mia Elise II ], which had the maximum accommodation under MCA, inviting the team meant he often found people sleeping on airbeds or sofas. He wanted more accommodation with this yacht, which is how we came to the PYC notation. It is our third or fourth PYC build and, although it is the shortest one overall, it measures more than 2,800 gross tonnes and allows billeting 22 among the owner, guest and staff quarters and 28 crew.”

Lürssen is well acquainted with the safety-focused PYC, having built 12 yachts compliant with the code. Areti is the smallest yacht built according to the rules to date. “In general, the major challenge based on the large number of passengers was to combine the rules and regulations of the Passenger Yacht Code with the owner’s requirements concerning the design and functionality of the vessel,” says the builder’s spokesperson, Sylke auf dem Graben.

Areti ’s keel laying, in February 2015, came after some of the first PYC yachts had finessed the rough edges off the new code, resulting in a few more superyacht-friendly modifications. However, PYC ramped up regulations regarding the embarkation of passengers and escape routes for guests and crew.

The layout of Areti ’s main deck alone shows eight escape hatches and four stairways for crew. Add to this such requirements as a mandatory sick bay with an isolated HVAC system, a safety station, a pressurised sea water fire-fighting system and required single cabins for officers, and you have more hurdles than a track and field event.

“The corresponding components, such as the crane beams for launching the liferafts, are located on the aft decks, which are the main social areas for the owners and guests. Therefore, it was essential for us to integrate the equipment as invisibly as possible and to guarantee safe operation at the same time,” Auf dem Graben says.

And, of course, the yacht still has to be the pinnacle of relaxation, a source of calm and a place where nearly two dozen people can find a place to unwind. Which is why Winch Design started with the superyacht spa . “This isn’t your typical girl spa,” says Winch. “It’s a toning spa for athletes. It had to be designed like an important sports facility and it has its own spa manager.”

So what does a toning spa for athletes include? A 5.68 square metre steam room for starters and an eight square metre sauna. These are off a 20 square metre sauna/steam lobby covered in mosaics by Andjelka Radojevic that features a 12 seat spa pool, a full-depth plunge pool chilled to 8˚C and an ice fountain. The sauna comes complete with a selection of birch and eucalyptus twigs for smoking on the small brazier.

Experience showers offer multi-temperature, light, acoustic and aroma settings to simulate a Niagara Falls or a Caribbean storm. On the opposite side of the hull is a hair salon, a massage room and a pair of hydrotherapy showers, including a horizontal Vichy shower that pummels the body with water jets in computer-controlled sequence.

Add to this a 24.65 square metre “wet lounge” with a teak floor that connects the two spaces and features a transom door that opens to the bathing platform and you have a space it would be hard to leave. Windows in the transom door make it a welcoming lounging spot even if the door is closed.

“The idea is that the guys can come back from a ride and go for a swim or relax their muscles in the spa surrounded by everything they need,” Winch says. In the meantime, the support team puts the bikes away in an adjoining dedicated bike and Segway storage room and workshop. Its glass walls framed in stainless steel make it a showcase for the custom equipment. Forward of the spa are four supremely convenient convertible guest cabins that can be arranged with twin or king-size beds.

“What I like about Areti is how calm it is on board,” Winch says. “The owner said ‘no bling’. He wanted a monochromatic palette in soft creams and taupes, and accent colours chosen in concert with paintings curated just for this project by an American art adviser.” In creating the GA, the Winch team also sought to balance spaces that could seat 18 people for a meal with spaces where one or two people could relax. “Everyone needs a place to let the smile come down,” Winch says.

The main deck has one of Areti ’s large-scale gathering spots aft, with a handsome curved bar sporting the aforementioned beer tap and copious sofa seating. Glass doors slide away linking this covered outdoor lounge with a formal main deck lounge complete with an auto-play baby grand piano and a beautiful dining room that seats 18.

Winch is proud of the fact that, to serve these guests, the crew can enter the dining room either via a pantry lobby and a unique wine presentation area facing the dining room or from the guest corridor. Either way, a door never opens directly from the pantry to the dining room to spoil the elegance.

Forward of the dining room is the main circulation centre for guests, with a discreet lift and a grand superyacht staircase offset to starboard so that it can feature windows throughout its height. “Staircases are a Winch signature and there is some Winch history in that staircase,” he notes.

Areti 's style is what Winch calls American Classic. “It’s not a mansion house style of elegance and it’s not classic European; it’s more a Midwest, nautical style,” he says. “The joinery is makore throughout with a variety of strong architectural mouldings.”

The owner’s previous yachts, a pair of Burgers before the Trinity, informed the selection, although makore is a bit lighter in colour than the traditional American favourite, mahogany.

“Of course, it’s in complete contrast to PYC rules against flammable materials,” Winch says. As part of the creative solution, all of the panelling — the interior was manufactured by subcontractors Vedder and Würzburger — was impregnated with a fire retardant material under high pressure.

The balustrade of the owner’s staircase was designed as a very traditional element, with turned wooden spindles and a complex shaped handrail. With staircases classified as escape routes by PYC and with escape routes having the toughest restriction on flammable materials, solid wood was vetoed for the spindles and handrail.

Working in conjunction with the interior contractor, Winch Design found a way to conform to the rules and keep the look. According to Nick Brosnan, who heads the interiors team for Winch Design and who was project director for Areti , the solution for the spindles was a combination of brass and veneered aluminium tubes.

The handrail is 3D milled foam/fibreglass over a steel core for the necessary rigidity, finished with a faux-wood painted top coat. In other places, a fire retardant plaster is shaped into mouldings and faux-wood painted. Even if you know where to look, it’s difficult to believe the surface isn’t solid timber.

“One of the reasons most of the joinery and bespoke furniture has a matt finish is because gloss lacquer is highly flammable,” Winch notes. Throughout Areti , light and dark Emperador and Botticino marble graces the floor. More than just aesthetically pleasing, stone floors easily meet the rules for non-flammable material requirements for PYC yachts and reduce what is called “fire loading” for interior spaces.

Two guest cabins and a staff cabin are secluded between the main deck entrance lobby and the tender garage and mooring deck forward. Each guest suite has neutral décor but with a unique accent colour — emerald, dandelion, camino, blue, crimson, indigo, lilac and coral — portrayed in scatter cushions and curtains.

As with the previous Areti , there is a full deck dedicated to the owner and his family. Concealed doors allow the two guest cabins aft of the master suite to be included in an owner’s family apartment when the children are on board by linking this hallway with the owner’s suite lobby.

The owner’s wife was concerned about the safety of the children with regard to the staircase. “We mocked up the entire thing so they could make sure there were no sharp corners or places for the children to fall through. That’s one reason for the landings,” Winch says. Tiny dots of escape lighting are hidden at the edge of each step.

There are his and hers dressing rooms and bathrooms, each with its own steam room, and it should be noted that, although we aren’t showing photos of these spaces at the owner’s request, her voluminous dressing room could make a photo essay of its own.

The bedroom is situated forward, surrounded by windows that face a partially covered outdoor lounge with a sofa, eating area and a superyacht spa pool . An overhanging brow and a carefully considered placement of the bridge make this out of sight of crew. The fully certified superyacht helideck , for day or night-time use, is forward and its slightly raised position provides a bit of a wind break for the owner’s outdoor lounge.

Aft of hidden crew circulation and another excellent pantry on this deck is the owner’s lounge, with a games table, a large wet bar and a beautiful seating area on starboard with oversized sofas and chairs. A large flatscreen television is disguised by a specially commissioned seascape by Alexander Creswell.

Elsewhere, televisions — and there are many — hide behind mirrors, drop out of ceilings or rise out of cabinets. Glass upper saloon doors slide open on another covered aft deck with a dining table than can expand to serve 16 people.

The bridge deck above is split about 50/50 between crew and technical spaces, and guest areas. In fact, the bridge itself has two banquettes where guests can observe Areti ’s operation. The main staircase terminates in a guest lobby that opens on to a superyacht gym with exercise equipment, wellness balls, weights and yoga gear, as well as fantastic views aft over a bar, 12 person spa pool and sunpads.

While this area is partially covered from the sun, a staircase on port connects to the bona fide superyacht sundeck with chaises, a giant sunpad and a sofa that faces forward, which is the perfect spot to watch from when coming into a harbour.

Areti presents a balanced profile and a homogeneous design aesthetic inside and out, with the exterior areas — directed by Andreas Iseli on the Winch team — matching the interior stride for stride. The layout is very practical for the yacht’s mission and the non-extreme profile is at once timeless and youthful.

What You Should Know About April’s Cicada ‘Double Emergence’

a photo of a black cicada with red eyes and transparent wings perched on a leaf

As temperatures rise this spring, parts of the United States will witness a natural phenomenon that occurs only every 221 years, as two neighboring broods of periodical cicadas — Brood XIII and Brood XIX — simultaneously emerge from the ground to search for mates.

Beginning around late April, billions of the flying insects will spread across parts of the American South and Midwest, making lots of noise but posing little threat to humans and plants, said Molly Keck , an entomologist and Integrated Pest Management Program specialist with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service . While these particular cicadas won’t be seen in Texas, Keck said this rare double emergence event represents a great opportunity for people across the country to learn more about the insects and their unique life cycle.

a photo of two periodical cicadas perched next to each other on a branch

“Anything that makes people interested in insects for reasons other than trying to kill them is always a plus,” she said. “If it helps people learn a little more about cicadas, then that’s a good thing.”

What Are Periodical Cicadas?

Texans are likely familiar with annual or “dog-day” cicadas , the green-and-black insects that emerge each summer across large swaths of  the state, leaving their exoskeletons on tree trunks and other surfaces, Keck said.

Though part of the same family of insects, “periodical cicadas” differ from their annual counterparts in appearance and behavior, emerging only every 13 or 17 years depending on the specific species. This year’s historic emergence will consist of two adjacently located broods : Parts of the upper Midwest will see the emergence of Brood XIII — a group of 17-year cicadas that last appeared in 2007 — while the lower Midwest and Southeast will welcome Brood XIX, 13-year cicadas not seen since 2011.

two photos of an annual cicada

The last time these two broods were above ground at the same time was in 1803, and they won’t co-emerge again until 2245.

The geographic ranges of the two broods are mostly separate, Keck said, with only a small area of potential overlap around central Illinois. Still, she said the rare alignment of their 13- and 17-year life cycles could make for an impressive number of the distinctive insects spread across a large swath of the continental U.S.

“Time is going to tell on that,” Keck said. “I’m curious to see what the actual numbers look like.”

While they are mainly harmless, Keck said periodical cicadas have sometimes been known to break tree branches by landing on them in large numbers. In addition, she said people in affected areas should get ready for a noisy few weeks as male cicadas emit their signature chirping sound to attract mates. Residents should also be prepared to remove piles of dead cicadas from around their property, as they can begin to stink when left unattended.

The Cicada Life Cycle

Humans witness just a small part of the cicada’s overall life, Keck explained, noting that most of the insect’s growth and development happens underground.

“They only have three stages to their life cycle: an egg, which turns into a nymph and then an adult,” she said. “Adults will lay their eggs, usually on the bark of trees, and when they hatch, the nymphs will crawl into the ground.”

There, the nymphs mature, feeding on the roots of trees and other plants; Keck says this behavior rarely causes damage to plants in Texas. How long they remain underground varies significantly, with annual cicadas spending two to five years below the surface and periodical cicadas remaining there for much longer, either 17 or 13 years depending on the species.

“(During those years), they’re just developing under the ground very, very slowly, and then they emerge as adults,” Keck said. Once they’re topside, mature cicadas scale the nearest tree or other vertical surface, where they shed their exoskeletons and take flight to search for a mate.

a graphic showing the life cycle of periodical cicadas, with depictions of eggs, nymphs, molting, and a large winged adult with red eyes. Accompanying text is as follows: "Living for 3-4 weeks, the males produce a loud mating call; Up to 600 eggs are laid at a time; Nymphs burrow 2-24 inches underground; They feed on tree sap for up to 17 years; Nymphs emerge & molt their shells; Bright red eyes are distinctive to periodical cicadas"

Compared to the years they spend as nymphs, adult cicadas have a very short lifespan, Keck said. Above ground, periodical cicadas live for just three to four weeks, while annual species can live for five to six weeks — just long enough to fertilize and lay their eggs, starting the cycle over again.

While their brief appearances are sometimes described in apocalyptic or even biblical terms, with references to a “plague of locusts” or the “cicadapocalypse,” Keck says it’s important to remember that cicadas are not dangerous — and they aren’t locusts, either.

“Growing up, I called them locusts,” she said, explaining that the common misnomer is likely a regional phenomenon. “In reality, locusts are actually grasshoppers, so they’re not even in the same order. They are not very closely related insects.”

Memorial marks 210th anniversary of crucial battle between Native Americans and United States

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. — Prayers and songs of remembrance carried across the grassy field where more than 800 Muscogee warriors, women and children perished in 1814 while defending their homeland from United States forces.

Members of the Muscogee Creek Nation returned to Alabama this weekend for a memorial service on the 210th anniversary of Horseshoe Bend . The battle was the single bloodiest day of conflict for Native Americans with U.S. troops and paved the way for white settler expansion in the Southeast and the tribe’s eventual forced removal from the region.

“We don’t come here to celebrate. We come here to commemorate, to remember the lives and stories of those who fought and honor their sacrifice,” David Hill, principal chief of the Muscogee Creek Nation, said at the Saturday ceremony.

One thousand warriors, along with women and children from six tribal towns, had taken refuge on the site, named for the sharp bend of the Tallapoosa River. They were attacked on March 27, 1814, by a force of 3,000 led by future U.S. President Andrew Jackson.

“They were going to fight to the end. The warriors were going to do what they could do to protect the women and children, protect themselves, protect our freedom, what we had here,” Hill said.

Leaders of the Muscogee Nation on Saturday placed a wreath on the battle site. The wreath was made of red flowers, in honor of the warriors who were known as Red Sticks. It was decorated with six eagle feathers in recognition of the six tribal towns that had taken refuge there.

Despite signing a treaty with the United States, the Muscogee were eventually forcibly removed from the Southeast to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. Some of their descendants made the journey back to the land their ancestors called home to attend the remembrance ceremony.

“Hearing the wind and the trees and imagining those that came before us, they heard those same things. It wakes something up in your DNA,” Dode Barnett, a member of the Muscogee Nation Tribal Council, said.

RaeLynn Butler, the Muscogee Nation’s secretary of culture and humanities, has visited the site multiple times but said it is emotional each time.

“When you hear the language and you hear the songs, it’s a feeling that is just overwhelming. Painful. Even though it’s hard to be here, it’s important that we share this history,” Butler said.

The Muscogee Nation has announced plans to try to place a permanent memorial at the site.

At sunset, 857 luminaries were placed on the field to remember the Muscogee people who lost their lives there. A song was sung in the Mvskoke language. The names of the tribal towns were read out over the site along with shouts of “Mvto," meaning thank you.

Hill said he became emotional watching his young grandson frolic and play in the nearby woods. He could envision the children doing the same 210 years ago and then the fighting that followed as the warriors made their final stand.

But Hill and others said the story is ultimately one of strength and survival.

“Our tribal towns remain. Our culture remains. Our people remain. Our blood remains. And our ideas remain,” Jonodev Chaudhuri, the Muscogee Nation ambassador to the United States, said

Chaudhuri said the “sacrifices and the loss of life of those 857 have provided light and life for us.”

“The battles we fight today, to protect our culture, and protect our way of life, protect our sovereignty is a direct through line to the lessons that were given to us by these brave, brave folks who lost their lives here protecting what is most dear to us,” Chaudhuri said.
