In the yachting world, Loon is known for an exceptional array of water toys — perhaps the best in her class. There's a FunAir inflatable slide that goes from the third deck straight into the ocean, an in-water pool, and a luxurious 43-foot Everglades tender. You can hop on paddleboards, sea kayaks, Waverunners, or a Seabob to explore nearby islands and coves.

The adventurous can try kite surfing or Lift e-Foil surfboards, which seems effortless when you watch the crew fly past, but is actually quite challenging. Loon is also a scuba diver's dream. The crew has several master divers and dive instructors who can take you out each morning, and they have all of the equipment you need onboard. They can also certify new divers during the trip.

The 180-foot yacht has a staggering 1,100 gross tons of living space, elegant design, and an amiable and attentive crew. Loon has two master staterooms, including a unique one on the upper deck. It has wraparound windows that offer unparalleled views of the surroundings. There are two salons, including one with recliners and a projector for movie night, plenty of spaces for dining alfresco, and an oversized infinity-edge Jacuzzi with a wet bar nearby. Fancy a workout? Loon has a treadmill, exercise bike, rowing machine, and free weights in the beach club. You'll be hard-pressed to find better workout views than this.

The crew is absolutely lovely and specializes in setting up unique experiences. You might have a pizza night on board, a barbecue on a private beach, or sundowners at the Instagram-famous Loon Bar. The crew will even take you to a picture-perfect sandbar and serve you drinks as you loll in the warm water.

Loon is available for charter from IYC in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda during the winter months and in the Mediterranean in the summer months. Rates begin at $325,000 a week plus expenses.

Nansen Explorer

For the ultimate Antarctica adventure, you can't beat a voyage aboard Nansen Explorer . This former research vessel has all of the technical features needed to safely explore one of the world's most remote and dramatic landscapes and, thanks to a retrofit in 2021, an ultra-luxe interior design that wouldn't look out of place in St. Tropez. For exploration, Nansen Explorer has an Ice-1A classed 236-foot hull and an ice-experienced captain and bridge team, which means she can go deeper into the ice than other polar-classed superyachts. There's a heli-deck with onboard fueling capabilities, so you can see the vast landscape from the sky, or even go heli-skiing. There are plenty of toys that allow you to get up close and personal with wildlife and nature, including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, dive equipment, and Zodiacs.

The interiors are so stylish, modern, and well-appointed that you'll forget you're in the middle of Antarctica rather than at a swanky hotel. The ship originally accommodated 60 passengers, but now it holds just 12 guests in seven cabins, including an owner's suite and a VIP suite. Each cabin has large windows that showcase the stunning vistas outside the ship. The sumptuous Scandanavian-inspired decor features shades of grey and white, which reflect the surrounding environment. There's a cozy lounge with a bar and a fireplace, perfect for warming up after an excursion to see penguins or whales.

Nansen Explorer is available for charter from Plan South America in Antarctica. Rates begin at $340,000 a week and are all-inclusive.

Yachting in French Polynesia is always a blissful experience, but Dardanella takes relaxation to the next level with bespoke, wellness-focused charters planned by onboard wellbeing facilitator Ayumi Gallagher. The wellness experience is all-encompassing, including fresh, detoxifying food, mindfulness workshops, yoga sessions, Pilates, meditation, and massages alongside traditional yacht activities, like diving, surfing, and tender safaris exploring the pristine waters and nature of French Polynesia. The captain is also a qualified marine biologist and ecologist, so he's the perfect person to show you this unique environment. There are two dive instructors, 12 sets of dive gear, a Nitrox dive compressor, and underwater photography equipment, so you can capture the beauty underwater, too. As an expedition yacht, Dardanella is well-suited for exploring remote destinations. The 121-foot yacht was refit in 2018 and has five luxurious cabins.

Dardanella is available for charter from 37south in French Polynesia. Rates begin at $100,000 a week plus expenses.

With seven decks, there's something for everyone aboard Wheels . This massive yet elegant yacht measures 249 feet, weighs almost 2,000 gross tons, and has lots of standout amenities including a spacious cinema for eight guests, a huge aquarium, massage room with a dedicated onboard masseuse, air-conditioned gym, and the main salon converts to a disco complete with lights and a smoke machine for those late-night dance parties. The split-level master suite has panoramic views, a study, and plenty of space, and there are four spacious guest suites on the main deck. Outside, there are plenty of relaxation areas, including sunpads, a hot tub, several dining areas and bars, and an enviable water sports area with two Jet Skis, four wave runners, three seabobs, a luxurious tender, and plenty more toys. The crew is very active and can teach you to wakeboard, kitesurf, sail the new Hobie cat catamaran, or scuba dive. They can also lead yoga and fitness classes.

Wheels is available for charter from Fraser Yachts in the Caribbean. Rates begin at $680,000 a week plus expenses.

Inside the €775,000-a-Week Superyacht That Was the Talk of Monaco Yacht Show

It's not uncommon for yacht charterers to "upgrade" their yachts year after year, chasing newer and bigger boats, which is makes Big Sky 's number of repeat bookings even more impressive. The 157-foot yacht has been a charter favorite since 2010, and she recently underwent a refit leaving her in immaculate condition. Big Sky can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms, including a full-beam master that spans the width of the yacht, and there's plenty of room onboard to relax, including the main salon with large windows and a state-of-the-art TV system. The sky lounge is perfect for entertaining — it has an onyx bar and sliding windows that make you feel as if you are outside. Of course, if you do want to relax outdoors, there are three teak decks with space for dining and a large sundeck with a Jacuzzi, sun pads, couches, and a bar.

Big Sky is available for charter from Northrop & Johnson in the Bahamas. Rates begin at $180,000 a week plus expenses.

This glamorous new superyacht caused quite a stir when she debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2021. It's rare for a brand-new superyacht of this size to be available immediately for charter, so book your trip on Tatiana early. This 263-foot yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests, who are guaranteed impeccable service from the 20 crew members. She has a great selection of water accoutrements and a stunning design with a large amount of interior space, including a deck dedicated to the owner's suite. There are also two VIP staterooms, four double cabins, and a twin cabin. While away any rainy days in the movie room or shooting some pool. Tatiana also has a fabulous beach club with a large bathing platform, bar, and outdoor lounge.

Tatiana is available for charter from IYC in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda during the winter months and in the Mediterranean in the summer months. Rates begin at €775,000 a week plus expenses.

Nour El Nil Meroe

Step back in time aboard Nour El Nil Meroe , a traditionally inspired Egyptian yacht full of modern amenities and luxurious design. Meroe is available for charter through Black Tomato, a top luxury travel company known for its expertly curated trips with exclusive experiences and a focus on local culture. Meroe is styled like a classic dahabiya boat, with authentic decor featuring whitewashed walls and linens alongside Parisian decor details. The VIP cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the Nile — we can't think of a more fabulous way to have breakfast in bed — while the other cabins have large windows. The shaded roof terrace has plenty of spots for lounging and dining alfresco, and there's a cheery indoor salon with red-and-white striped decor and cozy couches. On your charter, you'll slowly sail down the Nile River from Luxor to Aswan. You can charter just the yacht voyage or book the Ultimate Egypt trip , which includes adventures on land as well as the yacht charter (think: private tours of the pyramids, exploring temples, or taking a jeep safari around Siwa).

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

One of 2022's most anticipated travel launches is the new The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . While this is technically a small-ship cruise, every element has been designed to make you feel as if you are aboard a superyacht. The fleet will ultimately have three custom-built yachts, each with 149 suites. However, in 2022, the collection will launch with their first luxury vessel: Evrima . The suites all have private terraces, which isn't something you can expect aboard even the largest superyacht. And of course, the amenities are incredible. It has a beautiful spa, stunning marina terrace (set up like a yacht beach club), an infinity-edge pool, a large gym, and plenty of entertainment. The dining options are seemingly endless, including the main restaurant, the Evrima Room, S.E.A., which features a menu by acclaimed chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, Talaat Nam, a Southeast Asian spot, and several casual options.

Whether on-screen or using a VR headset for the fully immersive experience, these tours enable you to navigate your way through every guest space on every deck, inside and out. This means you can appreciate the spaces for yourself, how they flow together, the interior design, what facilities there are, what features you might want to add and where you could add them, and how well the yacht has been looked after.

While you are free to tour the yacht on your own, we strongly recommend a broker-led tour. The broker knows the yacht inside and out as they have been on board and have access to our global yacht database. The broker knows the provenance and maintenance history, they know the captains and their operational knowledge of the yacht, the time and cost involved in refitting, upgrading or refurbishing the yacht - a huge number of insights relating to potential ownership. WARNING: DO NOT BOOK THROUGH THEM This is one of the sleeziest most frustrating companies I've ever had to deal with. Our boat ride was unsafe and unpleasant to say the least (they contract out so they probably didn't even know the guy). After a dispute we them, we finally came to an agreement about a refund and then they snuck another charge onto my account three months later. I've written maybe two other negative reviews in my life. I hate to do it but I had no choice.

VIRTUAL TOUR OF BELOW DECK YACHT: See Inside Season 3’s Superyacht EROS (aka Mustang Sally)

The decks have been polished, charter guests have stepped on board and the crew have no doubt had many adventures on board. It’s that time a year again - a new batch of charter guests will come aboard the motor yacht EROS (real name Mustang Sally) each week for a luxury vacation in the Bahamas. The life and work of the hard-working crew on board will be shared with hundreds of thousands of viewers who are finally treated to the brand new series of Below Deck.

"The only thing predictable about season 3 is that it is totally unpredictable," says the well-travelled Captain Rosbach, who returns with three other crew members from Season 2 (Kate, Amy and Eddie) and five new crew members to work a summer charter season on board EROS. He also assures fans of the unscripted show that there will definitely be “plenty of intense drama to go around” this year.

Sold for $17.9 million in 2013, the superyacht featured in the show is named EROS for the series, but currently charters for $175,000 - $200,000 per week (plus add-ons) in the Mediterranean and Caribbean as Mustang Sally. She was built by U.S. shipyard Trinity Yachts in 2008.

As seen in the tour above, charter guests who have vacationed in the Caribbean on EROS this summer for the series have enjoyed amenities including an 8-person Jacuzzi, ship-wide music system, outdoor bar and barbecue area and gym. Able to accommodate up to 11 guests in five modern classic-styled staterooms, her spacious layout features a lavish master suite, three double cabins and a twin cabin, with one Pullman berth.

Water toys include Waverunners, water-skis, scuba diving gear and a range of towables, with underwater lights illuminating from her swimming platform in the evenings to ensure guests of Mustang Sally can enjoy a dip at any time of day.

Orlando boat tours are a fantastic activity in Central Florida, no matter the type of boating adventure you choose.

Some of the suggestions below are full-day tours, and others take mere hours. But all are a great way to spend your time in order to enjoy the Sunshine State’s beautiful scenery. And that could mean a wild ride in the Everglades or sailing sunset cruises on one of the Orlando area's attractive lakes.

We are sharing the best Orlando boat tours – private and group options – including scenic pontoon boat tours, airboat rides, kayaking, canoeing, sunset sails, and even boat rentals at Walt Disney World.

Orlando Airboat Rides 

One of the things Florida is most known for is its famous airboat tours. Sign up for this fun adventure whether you’re in Fort Lauderdale or Miami, within Everglades National Park, or Orlando on Shingle Creek, on the headwaters of the Florida Everglades. 

You won’t soon forget an exciting airboat ride when you visit the Orlando area, with a chance to see Bald Eagles and other endemic tropical birds, alligators, and crocodiles (maybe even a baby alligator). 

Airboat rides are particularly popular amongst nature lovers. These special boats allow you to glide on the unique marshes and swampland of the Central Florida area. We thoroughly enjoyed our Florida airboat experience. 

Sign up for a 90-minute fun and educational Orlando airboat tour to encounter the real Florida with experienced captains. Alternatively, secure your spot for a 1-hour sunset airboat tour and hope for one of Florida’s famous colorful sunsets. 

Most airboat tours take place rain or shine. Just in case, we recommend traveling to Florida with a poncho or thin raincoat of some sort. Be sure to check in for your tour at least 30 minutes before the experience. 

Orlando Boat Tour on an Airboat with Transportation

This tour includes pick up and drop off in Central Florida (including designated Disney World and Universal hotels), a BBQ lunch, a printed photo, and admission to their animal rescue Wildlife Park, where you can see birds, big cats, and reptiles. 

The entire experience – from transportation to the boat ride – lasts around 7 hours, including the drive to and from the Everglades area. The Florida Everglades are approximately 45 minutes to an hour's drive each way from Orlando. Choose from a 30-minute or 60-minute airboat ride when you book your experience . 

Orlando Sailing Tours 

How about enjoying Orlando’s lakes with wind power? Sailing tours are the perfect way to glide on the water. And a sunset sail is incredibly romantic, to boot! 

Private Morning Sail 

Set sail on a 2-hour private sailing tour, starting at 10:00 am. Adventure awaits on Lake Fairview for up to four guests. 

This area is just north of College Park near downtown Orlando and 15 minutes from Orlando’s Lieu Gardens. Don’t forget to bring towels if you want, though water is provided (and lakes are calm anyway, so you shouldn’t really get wet!).

Advanced reservations are required.

Private Lake Sunset Sail 

Sail on Lake Fairview, approximately 10 minutes from downtown Orlando, 30-35 minutes from the Disney theme parks (including the Disney Springs area), and 25 minutes from Universal. 

This 2-hour private Orlando boat tour can fit up to four people, and they allow you to bring your own snacks and beverages onboard. We recommend bringing a bottle of wine or champagne! 

We recommend bringing along a wine tumbler set for your sailboat adventure! 

Kayaking Tours

Connect with nature from the comfort of a kayak and get in some exercise too. Orlando boat tour options for kayaking are plentiful. 

Kayak with Manatees

Head 45 minutes north of Orlando for your chance to kayak with manatees! These cute and friendly mammals are famous in the Sunshine State, where they come to enjoy the warm water for the winter. 

Whether you’re a novice kayaking trying it for the first time, or an experienced pro, this tour is for you if you want to see a plethora of wildlife.

Glass Bottom Boat Kayak Tours

If you want to see the fish below the water’s surface without snorkeling, sign up for a glass-bottom kayak tour. See through the bottom of the boat on this Orlando boat tour and have the chance to view the colorful fish and marine plant life beneath you. 

Try a Rock Springs guided kayak eco-tour as you glide on the crystal-clear water for two hours. You’ll learn about the local ecosystem, stop for photos, and have the opportunity to swim in the springs. Opt to jump into the water from a rope swing for a thrill during this adventure. 

You can also opt for a sunset tour in a glass-bottom kayak . Paddle through the Winter Park Chain of Lakes and canals in a peaceful setting. Your knowledgeable guide will point out interesting nature homes along the way and share some history of the area. You’ll also be able to stop for photos where you like!

Winter Park Evening Clear Kayak Glow in the Dark Tour

If you want to add a fun element to your kayaking adventure, sign up for a Winter Park kayak tour at night with a glow-in-the-dark kayak. The boats are illuminated with nighttime lighting!

They will surely be a good photo opp and fun outing as the lights make the water beneath you glow. 

Another great option is this Neon Night Glow Paddleboard or Clear Kayak experience on Lake Ivanhoe.

This unique boat tour allows you to see Orlando’s skyline at night as you paddle along with the help of your guides, the moonlight, and the colorful lights beneath your kayak or paddleboard.  

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

One of our favorite Orlando boat tours is in Winter Park. It was established in the 1930s, decades before Walt Disney World opened in Lake Buena Vista.

This pontoon boat tour starts near the well-known Park Avenue area. Set out on your scenic cruise from Lake Osceola to the Winter Park Chain of Lakes as your guide takes you through the manmade canals.

Sail past stunning homes in Winter Park, where you will have breathtaking views of the opulent private homes in the area (which is one of the reasons we enjoy the boat tour).

You will have a chance to see wonderful some of Florida’s beautiful birds, like Blue Herons and large cranes, as you travel on several lakes. 

Each boat holds a maximum of 18 passengers. Be sure to bring cash or a check to buy your tickets because credit cards are not accepted. We advise purchasing tickets in the morning on weekends, even if you plan on going later in the day. It’s a very popular tour, and tickets often sell out quickly. 

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour is closed on Christmas Day. Otherwise, tours leave daily on the hour, starting at 10:00 am. The last tour is at 4:00 pm. 

Day Trip Boat Tours from Orlando

While the Orlando boat tours listed above are within 30 minutes, on average, from Orlando, it’s worth mentioning there are more boat tour options nearby within a 2-hour drive. Here are some additional Central Florida boat tour options. 

Mount Dora Lake Tours

One of our favorite destinations from Central Florida is 45 minutes north: the quaint town of Mount Dora . There’s so much to see and do there in the afternoon or morning; a boat tour is the best way to extend your trip to a whole day. 

Take a 2-hour pontoon boat tour with a departure point at the historic hotel, the Lakeside Inn. Enjoy your leisurely cruise around Lake Dora and The Harris Chain of Lakes, including the famed Dora Canal.

The all-weather 25’ boats can cruise rain or shine thanks to their retractable clear covers for the sides of the boat. Choose from one of two daytime tours, or their third option to cruise during sunset.

Syracuse Boat Tours offer themed cruises on Onondaga Lake

There are few American cities where you can relax on a boat in the middle of a lake and take in a sweeping view of the skyline as you sip a cocktail.

Syracuse is one of those geographically blessed cities where such pleasures are possible—if you own a boat, that is.

Now the boatless among us can enjoy a cruise around Onondaga Lake without the hassle of owning a boat, thanks to Syracuse Boat Tours , a new marine tourism-focused company that began booking cruises earlier this month.

The public response so far has been “pretty solid,” said owner/operator Annette Peters, a Syracuse native who lives on the Seneca River.

“I love this community, and we’ve got a jewel in Onondaga Lake that we just don’t appreciate,” Peters said. “I’ve taken people out on my boat on Onondaga Lake for years and they’re always so shocked how beautiful it is and how seldom its used.”

Peters says she’s picking up where Mid-Lakes Navigation, the last company to offer Onondaga Lake cruises, left off about 10 years ago. The company operates one boat at the moment, a 22-passenger pontoon boat.

Scheduled open-seating for one-hour or 90-minute cruises depart daily. The best way to get a seat is to book online . The boat is also available for private charters.

Depending on the cruise, admission costs $12.50-$15 for children; $27.50-$30 for adults.

Syracuse Boat Tours offers a range of themed cruises, including:

• Tiki Cruises: jam to Caribbean music as you sip fruity cocktails/mocktails. On Tiki Tuesdays the boat will pick you up and drop you off at the funky Tiki Bar on the Seneca River, where passengers get a ten percent discount.
• Happy Hour Cruises: Cruise from the Seneca River into the lake and watch the Syracuse skyline come into view. Music provided, or passengers can bring their own playlists.
• Historical Cruises: Narrated cruises that delve into the lake’s long history.
• Sunset Cruises: Get a front row seat to a spectacular sunset over the lake.

Other themed cruises will be scheduled throughout the summer, including a wine-tasting tour, a Seneca River cruise, bourbon-tasting tour, and fall cider and foliage tours.

If business is good, Peters plans to upgrade service next year with a bigger boat ideal for dinner cruises. The pontoon boat could then be used to shuttle passengers to the Amp, Inner Harbor/Aquarium, Onondaga Lake Park, or the Tiki Bar on the river.

As more people recognize Onondaga Lake as a tourist destination, Peters says she’s positioned to take advantage of CNY’s future growth.

“We need a water taxi, and this is the first one,” she said. “That’s the dream.”

Congressman Adriano Espaillat hosts 3rd Annual Harlem River environmental boat tour. These are the changes he wants to see.

NEW YORK - Congressman Adriano Espaillat hosted his third annual boat tour of the Harlem River Friday.

The Circle Line loaded up with elected leaders and environmental advocates to see how efforts have taken shape to bolster the banks of the Harlem River between the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. Another project underway in Uptown will bring water taxis to the 125th Street and Dyckman docks.

"It's really a holistic approach to it," Espaillat said, "but obviously, the waterfront, what you see on the trip is the difference between the area south of 96th Street and the area north of 96th Street. It's like the tales of two cities."

Waterfront improvement efforts continue in Upper Manhattan

Espaillat brought along the group WE ACT For Environmental Justice and students from Fordham University, plus teams from the National Parks Service and the EPA. This year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers joined the tour with fresh federal funding to conduct a full environmental study of the area.

Espaillat said he uses his position on the House Appropriations Committee to push for the financial support his district needs.

"One of the attractive pieces of this neighborhood," Espaillat said, "[are] the green areas, but if families can't get access to the waterfront and those green areas, then it's limited what you can do."

Uptown also contains the most sewer overflows in the city, leading to river leakage in heavy rain, but a project to bring the covered Tibbett's Creek in the Bronx above ground aims to help change that, too.

"At some point, we would love to make both the Hudson River and the Harlem River to be at a swimmable level, so people feel safe swimming and recreating in it," said Chauncy Young with the Harlem River Working Group, which helped organize the tour.

The ultimate vision is still years away, but action can happen through this collaborative approach. Part of the waterfront improvement efforts include connecting trails along all the city's rivers.

The build-up to every Olympics always involves anxious headlines about what could go wrong. They miss the mark almost every time.

Who predicted that this history-making opening ceremony would be remembered for rain?

There were concerns over security, whether the river would be ready and the heat. But no one said, "what happens if it pours through almost the entire opening event?’

The rhythm of the Olympics is that all the fears fall away after the first night and the party begins.

That’s what happened tonight, despite the wet weather. It was a party. And the adversity of downpours just added to the determination to have a good time.

Before her big moment, Dion took in the sights of Paris

Singer Céline Dion, who performed “Hymne à l’amour” at the opening ceremony of the Paris Games earlier today, took in the sights and sounds of Paris before her performance.

“I’m so happy to be here with you this week! I’d like to also extend a warm thank you to the local Gendarmes for keeping us safe," she wrote on a social media post that included a photo she snapped with police.

She also made a stop at the world-famous Louvre earlier this week.

"Every time I return to Paris, I remember there’s so much beauty and joy still to experience in the world," she wrote.

Paris played a crucial role in history of flight

Paris is the first place on Earth where humans fully realized our dreams of flight — all the way back in 1783.

The original hot air balloon piloted by humans was built by the Montgolfier brothers and launched in November 1783. Then, a week later, a gas balloon piloted by Jacques Alexander Charles and Nicholas Louis Robert took off from the Louvre in front of King Louis XVI and 400,000 Parisians.

From then until the Wright brother’s, the French were the rulers of the sky. For a century the balloons, not the Eiffel Tower, defined the Paris skyline.

At one point in the 1870s, a massive tethered hydrogen balloon was also tethered in front of the Louvre and carried some 36,000 royals, scholars, dignitaries and normal citizens up into the heavens.

Rafael Nadal's ‘heart’ is at Paris Games

Tennis star Rafael Nadal expressed his feelings about being at the Paris Games and opening ceremony with a heart emoji.

Earlier today, soccer great Zinedine Zidane passed the Olympic torch to Nadal during the opening ceremony near the end, close to the lighting ceremony.

USWNT forward Trinity Rodman: Claiming first goal at Olympics 'felt amazing'

U.S. women's soccer forward Mallory Swanson lauded the team's preparation after a comfortable 3-0 win in their Olympic opener against Zambia yesterday.

Swanson, who scored two of the USWNT's three goals against Zambia told NBC News: "I think that we ultimately just had a really fast start to the game. This past week, we’ve been really focusing on finishing and I think it paid off."

Teammate Trinity Rodman was also on the scoresheet for the U.S., claiming her first Olympic goal, and she couldn't have been happier about the outcome.

"It felt amazing," Rodman said when Hoda Kotb asked about her goal. "It couldn’t have gone any better, so I’m very happy."

The team's focus now turns to Sunday's match against Germany.

Beyoncé hypes up Team USA in new video

The Beyhive collectively gasped tonight when Beyoncé appeared in a pre-recorded segment to support Team USA.

The singer donned a special Team USA bodysuit and floor-length jacket for the occasion, along with a sparkly American flag cowboy hat to introduce the athletes.

“Get a look at America y’all. These hopes and dreams. These superstars that represent us, the people of this big bold beautiful complicated nation, all rooting together for them,” she said over the track of her hit “Ya Ya.”

“We’ve got superstars and we’ve got legends,” she continued. “We’ve got big dreamers, who fought their whole lives to get here. Who gave up everything for one shot and made it.”

“That pride and that  joy , that’s what gets me about this team and that’s what makes me  believe  in this team,” she said. “And thats why I can’t wait to see what they pull over these next 16 days.”

“America, give it up for Team USA,” she concluded. “The very best of who we are. What a vision to behold. What a team to believe in. What a night to celebrate.”

As the coverage returned to the flotilla on the River Seine and Team USA floated across, the hosts were thrilled about the Beyoncé appearance.

“Y’all, and what about Beyoncé?” pop star Kelly Clarkson asked. “Just kicking everything off and getting everybody amped for this. I couldn’t think of a more perfect artist to do that for these athletes.

“If I’m Steve Kerr, I’m showing that video before my game,” former NFL player Peyton Manning replied, referring to the Team USA men's basketball coach. “Let Beyoncé do all the talking.”

Cover of ‘Imagine,’ an Olympic fixture, symbolizes a call for peace

John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s song “Imagine” has been a mainstay of the Olympics ever since Stevie Wonder performed it at the 1996 Atlanta Games in memory of the victims of the Centennial Olympic Park bombing .

The song is one of several symbols that represent peace at the Games — white doves and olive branches among them. While those symbols are represented at every Games, they are particularly salient in 2024 as the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 39,000, while the war in Ukraine is well into its third year. 

One year ago today, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach quoted the song against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.

“The Olympic Games must always build bridges. The Olympic Games must never erect walls. Imagine. You may say we are dreamers. We are not the only ones,” Bach said.

Only months later, the Israel-Hamas war would erupt.

This year, the song was interpreted by French singer Juliette Armanet, accompanied by pianist Sofiane Pamart. A float on the Seine included ground that appeared to be crumbling a piano aflame.

In the delayed 2021 games, a star-studded lineup including John Legend and Keith Urban sang the song.

U.S. track and field star Sha’Carri Richardson was savoring the experience of floating down the Seine with other athletes at the Paris Games opening ceremony earlier today.

“The journey that we’ve been experiencing so far has been phenomenal. The art, the culture, the love from the fans,” Richardson said.

She also called the experience "humbling" but said all the athletes worked hard to be there, and deserve to be there.

Asked what her 9-year-old self, who had just started running track, would say to the now 24-year-old Richardson cited hard work.

“No matter what happened, no matter what was going on, you stayed committed to the fact that you love what you love, you put your full self into what you’re doing,” Richardson said.

“That’s all that matters, and it’s always going to show.”

Richardson is the heavy favorite in the women’s 100-meter.

“When everyone walks away from the Paris Olympics — including Sha’Carri Richardson — I will be saying, and the world will be saying, that Sha’Carri Richardson put her best self and her full self in front of the world,” she said.

Meanwhile in space ...

As the Summer Olympics take place in France (and Tahiti), astronauts on the International Space Station are having their own out-of-this-world competition.

NASA posted a video on YouTube of its astronauts "getting into the Olympic spirit," carrying their own Olympic torch at zero gravity along with a training montage.

"We can't imagine how hard this must be to be such a world class athlete doing your sports under actual gravity," astronaut Matt Dominick said to Olympians on Earth. "So from all of us aboard the International Space Station to every single athlete in the Olympic Games, godspeed."

Harvard’s fencing program charging onto the Olympics scene with 8 athletes set to compete in Paris

Harvard University is known for a lot of things — but being an Olympic powerhouse hasn’t always made that list.

However, its fencing program has been dominating a niche in the sports world. Of the 20 fencers headed to the Olympics for the U.S., six are past, current or soon-to-be Harvard athletes. And two more Harvard fencers are set to compete in Paris as part of Canada’s national team.

Of the six Crimson athletes on the U.S. team, four are alumni — three of whom graduated only two months ago — one is a rising college senior and the other is a high schooler committed to the university.

Super Bowl champ Manning breaks out the cheat sheet wristband

Opening ceremony co-host for NBC and Super Bowl champion QB Peyton Manning broke out the wristband that quarterbacks use to keep track of plays during the procession of athletes down the river Seine.

“Oh, this is just my wristband,” Manning, who has won two Super Bowls, said when questioned about it by Kelly Clarkson.

“I, you know, have notes on all 200 countries and all 10,000 athletes -- that’s not normal?” Manning joked.

Fans paid to sit in rain, watch TV and wave at passing boats

While millions of TV viewers were wowed by the grandeur of today's opening ceremony, paying customers who shelled out thousands of dollars to be there and shiver in the rain were far less impressed.

"There was not a real show for us," said student Hannah Margram, 24. “It was too big and too long, so it wasn't a good experience for anybody."

A seat at the opening ceremony amounted to watching a massive TV monitor and waving at passing boats without actually witnessing any live acts.

"I don't think passing boats is worth the price," photographer Raphael Metivet said of his 1,600-euro seat. "There's no entertainment in front of us, there's nothing happening . We just saw boats passing by."

Good waves forecast for tomorrow's first day of surfing

The Paris Olympics’ surfing venue, Teahupo’o in French Polynesia nearly 10,000 miles from the city, is welcoming tasty waves this weekend, with the first of four days of competition scheduled tomorrow amid a nine-day window designed to allow for flat, off days.

The event is composed of six rounds, starting with tomorrow’s eight heats featuring three surfers each, and including quarterfinals, semifinals and final — the latter three planned for a single day. Event forecaster Kurt Korte of private wave forecast service Surfline is enthused about the expected conditions, with head-high to “several feet overhead” waves en route, he said.

“Lots of opportunity for some good waves,” Korte said. “Should be a great day.”

He credits two overlapping southwest swells that will hit the reef off the village of Teahupo’o to create its churning, left-breaking barrel. Competitors who can paddle into that barrel and spend quality time there with style, and without wiping out, could wow judges and grab a heat-winning bye into Round 3. Team USA surfer and world No. 1 Caitlin Simmers of Oceanside, California, will be looking for those sustainable tubes on Saturday.

Light, northeast winds are likely to help by contributing to clean conditions free of chop, Korte said.

The break could see a bump in size on Tuesday, when waves 8 to 12 feet are in the Surfline forecast. Organizers hope that Tuesday will host the event’s final rounds.

'Man, they came to party': Yachtley Crew sails back to Indian Ranch with more yacht rock

When Yachtley Crew came to Indian Ranch by the shores of Indian Lake in Webster last summer, it was evidently a very popular voyage through the smooth waters of a yacht rock tribute show.

"We love Indian Ranch. Man, they came to party. They were amazing," recalled Phillip Daniel, also known as Yachtley Crew's Philly Ocean and lead vocalist, about how the the show went and the reaction of the audience.

Yachtley Crew will be setting sail again for an appearance at Indian Ranch on July 25. "If it's anything like last year, we're stoked," Daniel said.

'Sailing ... takes me away ....'

The seven-member band, which dresses in nautical suits with captain's hats and wears aviator sunglasses, is currently on its "Full Steam Ahead" nationwide tour, the biggest tour since it was founded in Los Angeles in 2017. Upcoming dates also include South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset on July 26, Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence on July 27, and the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis on July 28.

The band is riding the yacht rock wave since a 2005 video series launched the term in 2005 in an affectionate send up of artists such as Christopher Cross and Hall and Oates. Cross, who was at Indian Ranch July 7 with Justin Hayward of Moody Blues fame, had a big hit in 1979 with the soft rock song " Sailing " which is about getting away from everything on a sail boat and so helped form the archetype of Yacht Rock.

Yachtley Crew also call themselves "The Titans of Soft Rock."

Asked for a definition of yacht rock, Daniel said "it's one of those elusive things ... I think the most easy way to define it is the iconic soft rock hits from the late 70s and early 80s music." Except that, instead of soft rock, "yacht rock just sounds kind of more fun."

Yachtley Crew's first recording release "Seas the Day" (2023) includes its renditions of songs that have become regarded as yacht rock classics such as Boz Scaggs’ “Lido Shuffle,” Ace’s “How Long,” Robbie Dupree’s “Steal Away,” the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love” and Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind.” Other songs in the band’s set include Toto’s “Africa,” Looking Glass’ “Brandy” and Rupert Holmes’ “ Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”  

Indeed, "The Piña Colada song, that is a great yacht rock core song, like 'Ride Like the Wind,'" Daniel said.

Audiences often dress up for the shows in yacht-themed attire and love to sing-along. Other yacht rock tribute and fun party bands include Yacht Rock Revue who will be performing at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield on Aug. 4.

'It has to be smooth'

Elsewhere, there has been some rather pedantic debate in some quarters about what makes true yacht rock, with terms appearing such as "nyacht" rock. An article in Mental Floss magazine helps keep things straightforward by saying " But above all else, the sound has to be  smooth . "

Daniel's vocals are certainly smooth, and the depth of sound that Yachtley Crew brings to its music is enhanced by having a sax player.

Daniel has memories of listening to the soft music of the late 70s/early 80s era while riding around with his father in a car and singing along to the radio. Later, he was in several original bands in Los Angeles. Besides Daniel (Philly Ocean) Yachtley Crew is made up of drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores) and keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald).  

"Each of us had careers with bands," Daniel said. The crew started to be assembled by Jones and Ruiz who are long-time friends and were listening to yacht rock music and felt they could do something with it. They put out a Craigslist ad and found guitarist Gardner. Daniel is friends with Gardner and also came aboard.

"Everything came together really organically," Daniel said.

'I think we have something here'

The idea of uniforms for the band came early. "Just the idea of yacht rock is such fun," Daniel said. But the group spent several months rehearsing to get the music down right. "We wanted to embody what people remember about these songs."

When the curtain was pulled on their first gigs Daniel recalls the shock on the faces of the audiences when they saw a band in nautical uniform. However, "They got it within two or three songs. They were screaming and dancing ... (I thought) Man, I think we have something here."

Yachtley Crew was soon selling out local venues and were noticed by the late legendary Jimmy Buffett who signed them to his own Mailboat Records label. The group have appeared on SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio “Yacht Rock 311” show as the first ever Yacht Rock band to perform live at the station.

Just as the band was about to get ready for its first nationwide tour in 2020, the pandemic struck. "We had a ton of shows booked," Daniel said. Yachtley Crew made music videos, put on live-streamed concerts and played at some drive-in concerts that were organized in the Los Angeles area. "People seemed to really respond.'

As the lockdown eased, "I think there was so much pent up demand for live music it really helped us. We got all the gigs back and places we'd never played before were selling out," Daniel said.

'Something original'

The "Seas the Day" recording also has Yachtley Crew's first original song, "Sex on the Beach," ostensibly about the drink that bears the name.

"We wanted to put something original out there," Daniel said. The challenge for the band was to come up with a song that sounds like it could have been written in the late '70s/early '80s soft rock era. "We wanted to capture the same vibe," he said. The video for "Sex on the Beach" has a guest appearance by the Access Hollywood & iHeart host Mario Lopez.  

The song and video includes a list of names of drinks, a couple falling in love, and "innuendo," Daniel said. All the members of Yachtley Crew contributed to the song. Once they had the concept, "we had the song written in 30 minutes. Everyone brings something unique to it." Fans have started requesting the song at shows.

Yachtley Crew has "two albums in the works" and two more original songs "in the mix." With that, "The core will always be the iconic songs," Daniel said.

The band has been venturing out across the seven seas with appearances abroad, including the United Kingdom.

"Total world domination," Daniel joked when asked about his ultimate goal for Yachtley Crew. Or at least, "To play for a stadium full of people," he said.

"We want to play the music for as many people as we can all over the world. When people come to our shows they're creating memories they will have for the rest of their lives. That's what it's about."
