One of the largest builds by CRN of Italy, motor yacht ODYSSEY is a 79 meter superyacht built for both the owner’s occasional use and for private luxury yacht charter vacations. Design credits go to Zuccon International Project for the exteriors and to Winch Design for the interior areas. While there are accommodations for 16 guests, regulations limit charter accommodations to 12 passengers. Based primarily in the Mediterranean, expect to see this Monaco yacht charter vessel turning heads from St. Tropez to Sicily for many summers to come. CRN yacht ODYSSEY replaces the owner’s previous yacht of the same name (now named Ice Angel), a 60 meter motor yacht built in 2009 by CMN Yachts in Cherbourg, France. Winch Design was also responsible for the that yacht’s interior design.
In reflection upon his role in the creation of the new 79 meter yacht ODYSSEY, Andrew Winch stated,
“It has been a great pleasure to work with Zuccon. I have always admired Mr Zuccon’s exterior designs and to partner with him and CRN for this project has been very exciting.”

A superyacht Greek odyssey
With its archaeological wonders, awesome coastlines and myriad islands, Greece truly comes alive when experienced by superyacht – especially when that superyacht boasts insider knowledge and a welcoming crew.
There’s something magical about curling your toes in cool sand while dining on a delicious dinner prepared in an impromptu beach kitchen while your yacht swings to anchor a little way offshore. The coloured lights that the crew have strung through the tree above the table and laid in the water on the shoreline bathe you and your family and friends in gentle hues while you relive another unforgettable day on the water.
There are several things that make such an experience possible, and they are the same things that make it extraordinary. First, there’s the location – in this instance, Greece and its heady combination of history and archaeology and islands and azure waters. Then there’s your accommodation – in this case, a 45.7-metre Christensen superyacht. Finally, there are the people who make every day special – in this case, the crew and their highly experienced Greek captain, who not only ensures the crew are happy and refreshed but who also brings his extensive local knowledge to bear to deliver the ultimate family holiday experience.
Indeed, for a captain like Takis Tsakos – who for a decade captained one of the Mediterranean’s busiest and most in-demand yachts, Ionian Princess – there’s a palpable sense of pride in showing off his country and the myriad gems it hides, and an infectious enthusiasm that carries through the crew.
“There are little places all over the country,” Tsakos beams. “To know particular spots is a matter of luck, knowledge and exploration. Some people decide to visit only well-known places, but you must find the gems, which are not on maps or in guides.”
It’s clear even on a short cruise through the Pelopponese starting at the historic port town of Naflpio, overlooked by the impressive Palamidi fortress that offers sweeping views across the Argolic Gulf and out to tempting coves beyond. It’s a classic route that takes in unvisited sandy bays and beautiful Greek harbours and islands such as Porto Heli, Hydra, Spetses, Poros and more before the welcoming arms and archaeological wonders of Athens beckon a short hop across the Saronic Gulf.
And that is but a fleeting taster of what superachting in Greece can offer. “We have north Greece and the Aegean islands in the northwest and northeast, Mykonos and Santorini in the central area, and Crete to the south,” Tsakos enthuses. “In the southeast there are the 12 islands of the Dodecanese, Samos, Kos, Patmos, Simi and more; and cruising these islands in combination with Turkey, taking in Gocek, Marmaris, Fethiye and Antalya makes for an excellent charter.
“Then,” he continues, “there’s the Ionian to the east, which is 90 per cent calm during the summer; the Sporades islands in the northwest Aegean, Saronica and Athens with the holy mountains; and for me I love Crete, which is a magnificent place – particular cuisine, particular people, and particular things to see; it’s beautiful. It’s one of my highlights, but every area has something that guests can enjoy – you just need someone who knows it well to emphasise what they should try and what they should see.”
Key to creating incredible memories – the epitome of the superyachting good life – is not only the location and the insider knowledge that brings it to life, but also the crew who are perhaps the core element that elevates the superyacht experience so far beyond the typical five-star shorebased retreat. The best charter yachts are marked out for their crew rather than for the size of the yacht or even the facilities on board, and often the happiness of the crew comes down to the management of the captain.
It’s something Tsakos knows well, having been awarded Fraser Yachts Captain of the Year in 2012 at the Monaco Yacht Show . “The key is a combination of many things,” he explains. “Honesty from the management is one, and respect both ways. And of course there’s the atmosphere on board, and crew time off during operation – you can’t have someone standing for 16 hours and to then be smiling and kindness, so I ensure good rotation even in a crew of just 10 people; everyone gets at least 11 hours rest everyday with eight hours sleep, and at least two hours in the afternoon – they wake up rested and ready to serve dinner, wake fast the yacht, wash down after arrival.”
It clearly works – for the decade that Tsakos ran Ionian Princess the yacht averaged as many as 120 days charter per year, with only four crew changes in nine years. More than that, though, is what a good charter yacht offers families and friends – the chance to see places well off the tourist routes, to spend time together and share experiences that can only come from exploring by superyacht.
“I like Corfu, and I like Zakynthos because there is a wild part in the west where there are villas, no buildings, no ports – it’s completely wild with beautiful beaches,” Tsakos says. “Lefkava also has one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the world, and Cephalonia has a very nice village which is like the St Tropez of Greece. Every area has something magnificent from a beautiful beach to an archaeological monument to nightlife. And if you want somewhere quiet,” he concludes, “I can find you islands and rocks where you will be the only people there the entire summer…” Such temptations epitomise the wonders that Greece confers, the freedom and the privacy that only a superyacht offers, and the experiences that only a knowledgeable captain and an engaged, happy and professional crew can deliver.

Starbucks ditches its Odyssey NFT program
Update: Starbucks announced Friday that it’s discontinuing its NFT program , which was in beta, to “prepare for what comes next as we continue to evolve the program,” according to an FAQ page.
We spoke with Steve Kaczynski, the program’s lead, on the Chain Reaction podcast last month. On Friday, he tweeted that his future at the company was uncertain :
Below is our original interview with Kaczynski from February 22:
The NFT space may be down substantially from all-time highs, but brands and loyalty programs looking to reach fans in new ways can still find value, said Steve Kaczynski , co-author of the book “The Everything Token” and community lead for Starbucks Odyssey.
“Brand anchors” to gated areas like reward programs are something that companies will expand upon in 2024, he said. “I think this year we’re going to see a lot of community-based brand building,” he shared on TechCrunch’s Chain Reaction podcast .
Starbucks launched Starbucks Odyssey in 2022 as its initial foray into the web3 world. The experience combined the company’s Starbucks Reward loyalty program with NFTs to enhance customer experiences, TechCrunch previously reported .
“We’re able to help people find their tribe,” Kaczynski said. “I’ve seen that people who live in California in the Starbucks Odyssey community are really good friends with people in Chicago and they have met up in real life at times. This never would have happened if not for web3.”
Starbucks opens up its web3 loyalty program and NFT community to first beta testers
The loyalty program has a five-tiered system with over 58,000 active participants at least on level one, Kaczynski said. “I can promise you those aren’t mostly or all web3 native people … it’s not just web3 people who are participating.”
Those who hit tier five of the program bought a “decent amount” off the secondary marketplaces, Kaczynski said. In December, for example, Starbucks announced that it’s sending the top 20 participants to Costa Rica to visit the coffee giant’s farms where beans are produced.
There are other “third-party utilities” to be developed through NFTs, not just by big companies like Starbucks or Nike but by local businesses that want to spin up loyalty programs or use tickets as an asset they can anchor and incentivize.
Kaczynski brought up this example: Let’s say Hot Pockets, the food brand, put out a promotion where it would give a 20% discount to gamers if they bought the brand’s Fortnite skin and connected it to a crypto wallet. “The purchaser is happy, the eater is happy and they get a discount and they’re in the ecosystem,” he said. “This person isn’t just a gamer, they’re an active gamer who’s participating and willing to spend disposable income on third-party things.”
When people think of NFTs, they often think of just expensive monkey pictures on the internet — and to be fair, that’s one part of it with Bored Ape Yacht Club — but there’s more value to be held in owning NFTs, Kaczynski says.
“Imagine you go into a museum and you see a beautiful painting on the wall, you can take a picture of that painting but it’s not worth any money. The picture on the wall is worth money because the museum owns it, it’s the original and they can prove both of those things,” Kaczynski said. “Up until recently you couldn’t do that with digital items” until NFTs came out.
Brands and companies having the ability to buy and sell and “truly own your loyalty is a new concept that makes it less one-way,” Kaczynski said. “While not all the community members engage in buying and selling … I think for a lot of people, having that optionality is so important.”

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold
P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.
In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.
“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.
“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."
Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.
In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.
“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.
“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.
Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.
“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.
Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.
“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.
“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.
Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.
Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.
“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”
An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.
Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.
In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.
Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.
The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.
The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .
According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.
Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.
In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.
In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.
In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.
When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”
"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.
As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.
"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.
“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.
