  • What is Second Life? Second Life is an online virtual world, developed and owned by the San Francisco-based firm Linden Lab and launched on June 23, 2003 . ( Wikipedia ). Second Life is NOT an online game, in that nearly everything in it–avatars, buildings, objects, movements, sounds, environments–is created by its users (called “residents”), not by the company.
  • What is Summer Sailstice? Summer Sailstice was founded in February 2001 by John Arndt, as the global, annual celebration of sailing held on the weekend nearest the summer solstice. ( Summer Sailstice Website ) Although very much a real world event, the Covid-19 pandemic kept thousands of sailors off their boats in 2020, leading to a real need for a quality virtual experience. We’ve continued our virtual event for all to enjoy!
  • What is sailing like in Second Life? Second Life sailboats obey the rules of physics; there are standards for behavior in response to winds, waves and currents. The boats (all of which are created by SL residents) range from tiny dinghies to multi-masted galleons. Sailors gather in yacht clubs, at marinas, and on miles of open ocean. (There may be the occasional need to dodge a mermaid.)

Stricken Fiji yacht: Sailor Clive Nothling’s widow wants husband home

The widow of a sailor killed off the coast of Fiji on a New Zealand-flagged yacht says she can’t wait for his body to return home.

Robyn Nothling’s husband, 73-year-old Clive Nothling of Russell, was knocked unconscious when the boom of his boat, the Second Life, hit him late Sunday evening.

Nothling logged his journey, revealing he missed his wife’s eightieth birthday while he was away.

Clive Nothling of Kerikeri on board his yacht Second Life in Fiji in September 2023. Nothling died when struck by a section of the yacht's mast off the coast of Fiji.

“Sorry I missed it but will make it up to her,” his note read.

He posted photographs of himself and his crewmates fishing, swimming, and sailing next to dolphins. His wife spent some time with him on the trip but returned to New Zealand early.

“[It] was great having her with me. [I] love her to bits.”

Crewmate Kevin Harper was also injured. Harper was sailing when the mast’s boom hit the pair.

Nothling was knocked unconscious about 24 hours before help arrived, by which time he was already dead, his widow said.

The cruise ship Pacific Explorer diverted course to respond to the Second Life’s mayday call about 1am on Monday.

The Pacific Explorer winched one person to safety and the Republic of Fiji Navy ship Saveneca saved the other survivor.

Nothling’s widow said, “I’m heartbroken, absolutely heartbroken. I don’t know how I’m even talking right now.”

“He was due home from Fiji in four days when he died. We couldn’t wait to see each other.

“He was a very special, strong man. He was known for being a very safe and competent sailor. This was a freak accident,” she said.

Nothling, born in South Africa and a keen sailor most of his life, had been in Fiji about four months before he died. He worked in the tech industry for several years.

“In his 30s, he built a boat in [his] backyard in Wellington and sailed around the world for eight years,” his widow said.

“I sailed with him for 30 years on our boat - I never ever felt afraid. He never ever took risks.

“We were together [those] 30 years. We were very much in love with each other and we had lovely plans.”

She believed the tragedy unfolded after the craft’s autopilot went awry.

Speaking from their home in Russell, she said details were still “sketchy” and hadn’t been confirmed.

“What happened was; the boom came across and hit Kevin first and then Clive, and he was unconscious for over 24 hours or more before they got him out.”

Passengers aboard the Pacific Explorer, a 2000-berth pleasure cruiser, witnessed the rescue, with video footage showing the Second Life bobbing against its hull.

Harper and a third crew member, whom Nothling’s widow only knew as Sean, were taken to Fiji, along with Nothling’s body. Consular services were notified.

Second Life’s crew were offloaded about 12 hours after they sent a mayday call.

Due to rough weather, the cruise ship was unable to launch small tenders.

The Pacific Explorer ship remained at a safe distance and waited for the Fijian navy to conduct a recovery operation for the sailing ship.

RFNS patrol boat Savenaca intercepted the immobilised yacht after midday.

Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) sailors were seen boarding the 12-metre yacht via dirigible and removing bags from the craft.

Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) confirmed two survivors were recovered from the vessel, while “sadly one person has died as a result of an incident involving a yacht off Fiji [Monday] evening”.

“This was a challenging search and rescue operation in tough conditions,” a spokesperson for RCCNZ said.

“Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre wants to acknowledge the work of the Rescue Coordination Centre, Fiji in leading coordination of the rescue efforts.”

A second response vessel in the area, The Beast, a privately-owned vessel belonging to Sir Michael Hill, also diverted to assist shortly after midday.

Cruise passengers reported that the Pacific Explorer continued on its course to Fiji at around 2pm local time.

A spokeswoman for Carnival Australia, the parent company of cruise operator P&O, said the Pacific Explorer had been first to respond to a call for help via the New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our crew, led by Captain Alan Nixon, for their immense efforts in very poor conditions, as well as our guests onboard for their understanding,” they said.

Second Life was last seen in Nadi Bay on Thursday, September 21. Nothling’s widow understood the Republic of Fiji Navy has since scuttled the craft.

Nothling was also survived by his son Zak Nothling, whom he had with his ex-wife Lynn Nothling. He had previously been a member of the Kerikeri Cruising Club.

May I just add: While the Loonetta is a nice cruiser, there are loads of racers available as well; Most importantly many of these are actively raced on a weekly basis.

Apologies for the late reply to your comment. I decided to keep the topic of racing boats for a future feature as I know very little about it. A good contributor needs to do research before writing an article! The topic is about sailing of which I am quite competent (although my wife would disagree) and a feature about racing boats is on the horizon (pardon the pun) Thank you for your comment and if you can be of any assistance in future sailing/racing articles, please don't hesitate to contact me via IM Mack

Really nice and informative article.Points of sail are general reference terms used to describe the direction a boat is sailing in relation to its angle to the wind.Close Hauled is an exact point of sail. It is equivalent to the definite angle to the wind where a boat's sails simply start to increase lift and propel the boat forward. This angle is generally around 40 to 45 degrees far from specifically into the wind. The genuine edge will change relying upon the attributes of the boat and its gear. This is the closest the boat can sail upwind. At the point when sailing close-pulled, the sails are acquired tight and the centerboard is the distance down.Good day. ~Sara.

She might be controlled by a genuine breeze from abeam, yet she is influencing a phantom to breeze from dead ahead in an equivalent and inverse bearing to her own advance through the streaming air. This ghost joins with the genuine breeze to create the real breeze over the sails. http://www.mysheriff.net/profile/boat-rental/sag-harbor/930761702/

One dead, sailor rescued by cruise ship from stricken Fiji yacht

O ne person has died during an incident involving a New Zealand-flagged yacht off Fiji, says Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre.

There were three people on-board when the vessel encountered difficulty.

One survivor was picked up by the Fijian Navy vessel Savenaca this afternoon, while the other was earlier transferred to the cruise ship, Pacific Explorer where they received medical treatment.

Both the survivors are being taken to Fiji, as has the body of the dead person. Consular services have been notified.

The crew of Savenaca were offloaded 12 hours after sending a mayday signal in the waters south of Fiji.

The small yacht was first intercepted by P&O cruise ship the Pacific Explorer at 1am this morning.

The 2000-passenger pleasure cruiser was repositioning from Auckland to Suva in the Fijian islands when it diverted to the distress signal.

The New Zealand-flagged sailing vessel Second Life appeared to have a broken sail and the crew required medical assistance.

One crew member was winched aboard the cruise ship, while two others remained onboard, unable to be moved.

Due to rough weather, the cruise ship was unable to launch small tenders, the Pacific Explorer ship remaining at a safe distance and waiting for the Fijian navy to conduct a recovery operation for the sailing ship.

RFNS patrol boat Savenaca intercepted the immobilised yacht after midday. Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) sailors could be seen boarding the 12-metre yacht via dirigible and removing bags from the craft.

Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) confirmed that two survivors were recovered from the vessel, while “sadly one person has died as a result of an incident involving a yacht off Fiji yesterday evening”.

RFN picked up the remaining survivor this afternoon, in addition to the crewmember who was winched onto the Pacific Explorer.

“This was a challenging search and rescue operation in tough conditions,” said a spokesperson for RCCNZ. “Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre wants to acknowledge the work of the Rescue Coordination Centre, Fiji in leading coordination of the rescue efforts.”

Both the survivors are being taken to Fiji, as is the body of the deceased. New Zealand Police and consular services have been notified.

Cruise passengers reported that the Pacific Explorer continued on its course to Fiji at around 2pm local time.

A second response vessel in the area, The Beast, a privately-owned vessel belonging to Sir Michael Hill, also diverted to assist shortly after midday.

A spokeswoman for Carnival Australia, the parent company of cruise operator P&O, said the Pacific Explorer had been first to respond to a call for assistance via the New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our crew, led by Captain Alan Nixon, for their immense efforts in very poor conditions, as well as our guests onboard for their understanding,” they said.

Owing to the poor conditions, the rescue of remaining crew by the cruise line was not possible, but the Pacific Explorer was reportedly in touch with those aboard the Second Life throughout the evening.

“Guests will be kept up to date with any necessary itinerary adjustments as Pacific Explorer renders assistance to those in distress.”

The New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre said that one of the yacht crew was now onboard the Pacific Explorer receiving medical assistance.

“Due to conditions and the comparative size of the Pacific Explorer, assisting the remaining people onboard the yacht isn’t possible.”

Passenger Ali Gilchrist Gilchrist told the Herald that the cruise ship had now left the scene and no other crew were taken aboard the ship.

“RCC NZ requested we monitor the yacht from a distance, as it is unsafe for us to get the [remaining crew] off the yacht in their condition,” she said.

The RFN released the cruise ship from observation duties around 4pm and it was now headed towards Port Denarau.

Cruise passenger John McFarlane photographed a rescue and recovery being conducted via navy launch.

“The launch from the Fijian warship went back across, we’re not yet clear on the offloaded passengers’ condition, however,” he said.

The Pacific Explorer is currently on an eight-day itinerary from Auckland with 2000 guests, mostly New Zealanders and Australians.

She was due to arrive in Suva, Fiji on Monday morning.

The 12-metre yacht, which bears the lettering Second Life on its hull, is a New Zealand-flagged ship, last seen in Nadi Bay, Fiji on September 21.

This room acts as a private theater with a touch rez TV system. The TV System is full perms. To use the TV simply click on the black prim located under the arrow. This will rez the TV. To use the TV you must be either on your own land, or, you must be on group owned land. If the land you are own is owned by a group, you must deed the TV to the group that the land is set to. To do this, you right click on the prim and click edit. In edit mode you will see tabs, select the "General" tab to the far left. Under that tab you will see group with set to the right of it. From there, select the group the land is set to, then press O.K. Underneath, you will see a button called "share with group". Click share with group and the Deed button will light up. Click Deed, and then click Deed again when the warning comes up. Now your TV is ready for use.

Upper Floor: The upper floor has a few features to it. Additional Notes:::

What is Temp Rez?

Temp rez is A Option in second life to enable prims to not count on your Land Prim count Normally A temporary prim will only stay rezed in world for 45 seconds before it will automatically delete itself

A temp Rezzor will Re rez the temporary Primitive every 40 to 43 seconds before the temp one deletes Thus letting the primitive to remain out in world and not count on your land prim count

You will notice a slight flicker every time the rez system re rezes the new object This is useful to allow people with a limited amount of primitives to have full use of there Object this case there boat/yacht

Please not Not all Sim's allow temporary rezing This is why we include a non temp version that will count 100% of the prims on your land Be sure to check your covenant on your land to see for any restrictions

Make Sure Show Avatar In Mouse Look Is Checked Under Preferences

Please Note Temp rez is added to the boats as an Option and may or may not work depending on the server that in witch you’re trying to rez the boat in.

Linden labs is updating there servers and the newer servers do not allow temp rez to function properly.

Connecting the Mainland to the United Sailing Sims is the Blake Sea, venue for exciting boat races and other nautical activity!

This was the first private - public partnership in Second Life, in early 2009 [1] . In the same time, Linden Lab was planning a new connection between Nautilus and Satori [2] . More historical information here .

The Blake Sea has a code of conduct . Please be considerate during races and events.

Blake Sea in August 2013 and beyond

second life yacht

Blake Sea is composed by a lot of sea sims, with tropical islands or compleatly covered with water. Since waterways have no ban lines, Blake Sea is a paradise for sailing. The Second Norway community has developed several transportation ways: an airport that covers a whole sim, a railway and a network of surface and underwater roads.

A recent map of the Blake Sea and the surrounding area is available by Atlan Bade.

Continent Controversal

Blake Sea is linked to Nautilus and has a visible separation. It growed slowly and new estates helped to this expansion. Even if some people don't recognise Blake Sea as a distinct continent, it is large enough (more then 30 sims), has a clear separation (a transcontinental channel) and all the sims share common Geography and transportation ways.

From a strict Geographic point of view, Blake Sea is composed of all sims placed East to the Nautilus - Blake Sea transcontinental channel (see Transcontinental Channels for more info). This is the largest of all intercontinental connections, but still sharp enough to allow a visible Geographical border between Blake Sea and Nautilus - Satori supercontinent. That means that Blake Sea is entirely private-owned and no mainland sim can be found inside it. If we admit this border, then it means that some water sims ownedd by Blake Sea estate are out of Blake Sea borders.

Geographical borders are drawn by nature obstacles and not by state borders. A good example is the following one: Hawaii islands belong to the United states; but Hawaii Islands are in Pacific Ocean and not in North-American continent, even if they under American government. This is also the case with Blake Sea sims West to the transcontinental channel; they are owned by the Blake Sea estate, even if they are, technically, in Nautilus.

Many parcels far outside of Blake Sea share the name of the continent (and even they use visible marks from air with the Blake Sea name). They are on mainland, in places that historically belong to Nautilus and Satori continent. They cannot be included in Blake Sea. From a Geograph, these parcels create a part, even a Subcontinent on South-East Nautilus or North-East Satori, under Blake Sea economic influence. Economic domination is taken from real life to Second Life here.

Blake Sea is composed of a big number of islands, owned by different estates. Majority of these islands are located inside a single sim, while some of them are placed on multiple sims. There are not two identical islands, each one is different. Ground texture is different from a group of islands to another. In many situations, each estate designed its own textures. There are many sandy islands, but also many of them are covered with grass. Vegetation is also different. And it is logical to be that way. Majority of the islands are tropical-themed, so they have palm trees and many other tropical plants on them. In other places, like Second Norway, vegetation is different.

The largest island is in Honah Lee sims. It also hosts a central mountain range.

There are many submerged sims. They form a long navigable channel oriented East-West. They are the most important navigation route and are continued in Nautilus . Near the transcontinental channel (see Transcontinental Channels , there are many submerged sims.

second life yacht

As seen in the Altitude map, Blake Sea is composed of a large number of islands, with low altitudes. The highest points (above 40 meters) are in Second Norwey sims and in Honah Lee sims.

The altitude map found that altitudes are usually low, below 40 meters. There are also many low islands, only a few meters above sea level, but still below 20 meters.

Note: Thanks to an entity orb teleporter in Nautilus, our drone was teleported 2 sims away. That caused an error and Blake Sea was pushed 2 sims to East on map. The map is correct for the entire Blake Sea, except that the border sims of Nautilus appeared 3 times.

Airport SNO is the only sim without water. Altitude map shows that in fact water level is set to zero. If water level would be set to default value, the entire sim should be flooded.

Transportation and accesibility

second life yacht

Main transportation way is by water. There are no borders for navigation. Road transportation is limited to some parcels, while in Second Norway, there is the fastest railway in Second Life: Second Norway Railway . Air transportation is also important, since there are many airports and Airport SNO is the largest of all airports.

Our team detected no entity orb teleporter. Ban lines, if they exist, they are rare.

Blake Sea has only a limited road & rail network inside Second Norway. Additional data can be found on Private Continents Network .

Road network efficiency : 5.666 for Second Norway, 1.022 for entire Blake Sea

Rail network efficiency : 2.815 for Second Norway, 0.508 for entire Blake Sea

Waterway Efficiency Indes is found to be the highest of all private-owned continents: 19.680

Ground transportation efficiency: 8.481 for Second Norway, 1.530 for entire Blake Sea

This means a total infrastructure efficiency of 21.210.

Next up - teleport and avatar display improvements. We think we’ve got avatar shapes figured out…and the real challenge - skeleton deformers - are also in the works!

🐛 JIRA end-of-life

image1.png

Yes, the king is dead, long live the king! While we have said goodbye to Jira as the platform for collaboration with our residents as well as for internal issue tracking, we believe this has allowed us to improve visibility and collaboration.

The new Second Life Feedback Portal is a great place for any new bug reports or feature requests, while the public Second Life Viewer project on GitHub is where we continue our open-source work.

Speaking of the Second Life Feedback Portal , it has already received 672 posts, 2635 comments, and 6426 votes! We thank you for your enthusiastic participation. We have made many updates since we first introduced it in January including a whole new UI and dark mode (based on your system settings). We will continue to improve the feedback portal and, most importantly, review all the incoming reports and requests!

Although Jira is dead, the archive remains. As mentioned in our Pt. 2 blog post , the Jira archive of the Second Life BUG project on GitHub is now available. You can find the public BUG archive at https://github.com/secondlife/jira-archive/issues . The archive currently contains most of the previously public Jira tickets from the original BUG project. However, there are a few that we are still moving over. It does NOT include tickets that previously had restricted access.

👩‍💻 Scripting changes

Out now: increased sensor result limit.

We've increased the maximum number of results returned by llSensor and llSensorRepeat from 16 to 32. This will reduce the need for workarounds such as repeatedly scanning small slices of space.

Coming soon: llSetLinkSitFlags, llGetLinkSitFlags, SIT_FLAG_NO_COLLIDE

In an upcoming server release we will be allowing scripts to set and get the sit flags of linkset sit targets via llSetLinkSitFlags and llGetLinkSitFlags . In addition, scripts will be able to set the SIT_FLAG_NO_COLLIDE flag to disable the avatar's collision volume when they are seated. This will be useful for clown cars and other creations.

Scripting roadmap

Status of these upcoming changes and more are visible on Second Life's new public roadmap at feedback.secondlife.com . If you have ideas or feedback on the scripting system check out the Scripting Features and Scripting Bugs boards.

🪀 Creator news

Coming soon: 15% reduction to mesh download impact.

Download weight is one parameter used as part of calculating an object’s Land Impact (LI).  We will be reducing this by 15%, decreasing the land impact of many mesh assets.

LI for mesh-based objects is either download weight, physics or server cost, whichever is greatest. This change will not impact animesh or mesh upload fees.

Coming soon: Scheduling automatic daily region restarts

This feature has been on people's wish lists for many years. Estate managers will soon be able to schedule automatic region restarts via the region console:

While most regions do not need to be restarted more frequently than weekly, which is automatically scheduled, some regions with high traffic may benefit from more frequent restarts. When you restart a region, keep in mind that everyone on the region will be kicked out.

Maintenance Viewer

GLTF PBR Maint 2 contains another round of fixes and refinements to PBR rendering, including a preview of Materials from Inventory while editing objects. Download version 7.1.3.7821226606 and check out the release notes .

Default Viewer

This viewer was finally promoted to default release and is based on a contribution by Kitty Barnett, adding emoji support to text chat.
