1. serial numbers.

After 2009 Rolex decided to use a string of random numbers to create its serial numbers. You can check the authenticity of a Rolex by checking its serial number. Every Rolex has a serial number on it, and you can verify the authenticity of Rolex serial numbers through the manufacturer.

4.  Font Consistency

The programming can be mechanically memorized, which makes it possible to start a new countdown without having to reprogramme the watch, for example in the next leg or a subsequent regatta with identical countdown duration.

Furthermore, once the watch’s countdown is launched, it can be synchronized on the fly to match the official countdown via the ‘fly-back’ reset function of the seconds hand and adjustment of the countdown minute hand to the nearest minute.

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

The countdown’s sophisticated functions were designed to be easily set and operated. The preliminary programming of up to 10 minutes is accessed, and then locked, via the rotatable bezel thanks to Ring Command, a patented system of interaction between the bezel, the winding crown and the movement, developed by Rolex. A technical feat made possible by the brand’s in-house mastery of the entire watch design and manufacturing process, from the case to the movement.

2. A Distinctive Aesthetic 

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch. A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand.

The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

While we wouldn’t be introduced to the very first Yacht-Master until 1992, Rolex’s history with sailing actually dates back to 1958, the year the Swiss watchmaker partnered with the prestigious New York Yacht Club. By then, Rolex had already garnered a reputation for making great waterproof watches with the invention of their Rolex Oyster case back in 1926. Rolex solidified its relationship with the world of sailing in 1966 when Francis Chichester — one of history’s most exceptional navigators — became the first person to sail around the globe on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, with a Rolex on his wrist. His voyage, which spanned from August 1966 to May 1967, took him 29,600 miles around the world. however, the most impressive part is that he only had a few tools to help him navigate his way, including nautical charts, a sextant, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Rolex wristwatch chronometer he used was a reliable and steady partner, helping him keep time amidst rough conditions for 226 days at sea.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex: 13+ Expert Tips

The vast majority of fake Rolex watches in the world are cheap, easy-to-spot knockoffs. “You know that if it cost $50, it’s not a real Rolex. It’s a very obvious fake,” says Matthew Bain, a Miami-based watch expert who operates Matthew Bain, Inc .

But some counterfeits are not so obvious. Just last year a group of imitation ceramic Rolex Submariners snuck into the market. “If you didn’t look at one next to the real one, and you just looked at it alone, you probably would not be able to tell it was fake,” Bain says. “A lot of people got burned.”

As counterfeiting technology and methods advance, understanding the intricacies of genuine Rolex watches becomes increasingly important for prospective buyers . Fake watches are a billion-dollar industry, with an estimated 30 million to 40 million introduced to the market each year, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry .

Sometimes counterfeiters mix and match parts from genuine Rolex watches and fake ones, making distinguishing the two even more difficult. “They might get a real Rolex movement, and then they make a fake case around it. It’s very hard to detect the originality of it,” Bain explains.

Only an expert — and luckily, 1stDibs has many — can really be trusted to determine whether or not a watch is genuine. Nevertheless, we’ve compiled a list of 13 things you should look for in a real Rolex.

1. Engraved Model and Serial Numbers

Genuine Rolex watches have their serial and model numbers deeply engraved into the metal between the lugs attaching the band to the body — whereas fakes often just have them etched on with acid. The watch’s serial number, which can be used to determine its production date, is located on the six o’clock side.

On the 12 o’clock side is the model number (also called the style or reference number), typically appearing below the text “ORIG ROLEX DESIGN.” To view the model and serial numbers, you have to take off the band , using a pushpin or small paper clip to remove the pin that holds it in place.

Counterfeiters often don’t bother to vary the numbers, instead printing the same digits on each replica. A simple Google search for the serial and model numbers of the watch you’re considering should reveal whether it is actually a mass-produced fake . “Many times they will etch the wrong model number on a watch. For example, a Submariner model number for a Yacht-Master ,” says Abe Diveroli, of Primetime305 .

Rolex has lately improved its numbering methodology. “The newer Rolexes have scrambled serials,” says Diveroli . “You could no longer date them without going to a Rolex dealer. Also, the serial numbers are now etched in the silver bezel under the crystal at the six o’clock.”

They also have “Rolex” engraved on them, although the placement of the engraving differs depending on the piece. Rolexes manufactured before 2007 included a hologram of the crown logo on the caseback. Because counterfeiters became so adept at copying it, Rolex discontinued the hologram. From the Air King to the Yachtmaster, Rolex watches have a consistent font style that’s unique to the brand. Variations in the style are a good indication that the watch is fake. The font size may vary slightly, since it depends on the dial’s diameter, which can be as small as 24mm on women’s Rolexes and as large as 44mm on men’s models . When checking the font on the face of a Rolex you’re considering, compare it with authentic pictures of the same model.

4. A Cyclops That Actually Magnifies

The magnifying lens that enlarges the date on the face of the watch — dubbed the “Cyclops” — should, well, magnify (2.5 times, to be exact). Hold the watch sideways to get a peek at the date without the magnifying lens. If you’re not certain that it appears bigger when looked at straight on, the watch is probably fake.

The Cyclops on an authentic Rolex is convex — you can feel a bump when you run your finger over it — and it’s centered over the date. If either of these criteria is not met, the piece may be of dubious authenticity. But another caveat: Some Rolex wearers prefer their watch without the Cyclops and remove it, so a previously owned piece without one may have simply been modified.

5. Waterproof , Not Just Water Resistant

This one is pretty self-explanatory. “Waterproof” and “water resistant” both refer to an ability to keep moisture out of the case, with the former denoting higher performance underwater. The majority of Rolex watches in the Oyster line should hold up at a whopping depth of 100 meters (328 feet).

If a watch stops working while you’re out for a swim, best to just leave that fake at the bottom of the sea.

6. High-Quality Materials and Heavy Weight

As one of the most coveted luxury watch brands in the world, Rolex uses only the most durable and high-quality materials . Any authentic Rolex feels substantial and solid, whether it’s made from the heavy-duty Oystersteel or the lighter-weight RLX Titanium or platinum. If a watch feels light or hollow, it may well be a fake.

The weights of Rolexes vary slightly, depending on the model, size, materials and year of production — older models generally weigh less than modern ones. But the weight difference between two real watches of the same model and size is negligible. In contrast, that between a fake and a genuine Rolex can be significant.

7. Plain Caseback

The casebacks of most Rolex watches are plain polished steel, without engravings, drawings or other decorations. Exceptions include the Sea-Dweller , which has the name of the watch and some variation of “Gas Escape Valve” written on its titanium back.

You won’t find a transparent caseback that lets you see the inner workings of the watch except on some very rare pieces from the 1930s . Such a back is a common sign of a fake Rolex.

8. Crown Etching at 6 O’clock

All Rolex watches made from 2002 onward have a tiny etched crown logo at the six o’clock position, which can take a magnifying glass to make out clearly. Because it’s so small, counterfeiters have a hard time replicating it.

Older models may have the crown etching at 12 o’clock.

9. Hands That Rotate Smoothly

The second hand on a real Rolex should appear to the naked eye to rotate smoothly around the face. That’s because the high precision of a Rolex movement is actually broken down into eight tiny micro-ticks per second, making it look like a continuous motion. If the second hand jerks with each tick, the watch is a fake.

Each Rolex model has a specific hand style. The Yacht-Master, for instance, has a much thicker minute hand than most models, while a Daytona ’s hands are a bit longer, reaching all the way to the hash marks, and are rounded at the end . The Day-Date has shorter hands with flat tips. Counterfeiters often use whatever parts are available to save money, hoping the buyers will overlook this detail.

Can You Hear a Rolex Tick?

Generally, no, you can’t hear a Rolex tick. That is because they are powered with fully mechanical movements, as opposed to the quartz battery used by less expensive watchmakers, which causes a distinctive “tick, tick, tick” sound every second. That said, some Rolex models do tick every few seconds, so it’s the loud ticking every second that indicates a fake.

10. Crown in One Piece

The crown — the small winding knob on the side of the watch used to set the time and date — will always have the famed Rolex crown logo, known as the coronet, engraved on the end. The Rolex crown logo itself is very detailed, finely crafted and well-proportioned, with five symmetrical points of the crown — no more and no less.

On an authentic Rolex, the winding crown and its stem are made from a single piece of metal. On many Rolex replicas, the crown is made of two pieces. Examine it closely with a magnifying glass for signs that it’s been glued together.

Another key element to look at is the crown’s grip. On a genuine Rolex, it is textured to provide traction when turning the crown. On a fake Rolex, the grip may feel uneven or difficult to turn.

The winding crown on a Rolex is always on the right side of the case for easy access — assuming it’s worn on the left wrist. The one exception is the left-handed GMT-Master II , which was introduced in 2022 to accommodate left-handed wearers.

Rolex uses Twinlock and Triplock crowns on its watches to ensure that they’re waterproof. The two different types are identified by small markings under the Rolex coronet. The Twinlock crown, featuring two sealed zones and identified by two dots under the coronet, was invented in 1953 for Rolex Oyster watches, one of the brand’s most iconic collections and the world’s first waterproof timepieces when they were introduced, in 1926. Other models that feature Twinlock crowns include the Sky-Dweller and the Datejust .

The Triplock crown, which bears the Rolex crown logo above three dots, was first used on the Rolex Sea-Dweller, in 1970. It features three sealed zones. When the crown is fully unscrewed, you can see the black O-ring that seals off the inside of the watch from water. Some good counterfeits will have similar-looking gaskets, but they’re merely cosmetic and serve only to fool the buyer.

Today, almost all Rolex dive watches have the Triplock crown, but older models still in production, including the Submariner 14060M , still use the Twinlock technology. It’s important to check the manufacture date of a particular model to determine which crown technology was used.

11. Accurate Date Keeping

A Rolex’s date should change sharply at midnight. Don’t panic if your watch is a few minutes off — that’s likely just a sign that the watch needs some maintenance.

If the date changes slowly or more than 15 minutes late, however, the timepiece may be a fake.

12. Bands That Lie Straight

The band — or bracelet, as Rolex enthusiasts often call it — should lie straight and not kink when laid on a flat surface. Link spacing may stretch and widen with time, but the individual links should still fit together correctly.

Bain cautions that authentic watches may be paired with inauthentic bands. “A lot of faking occurs with the bands because, say you buy a gold Rolex Presidential , you wear it a lot, the band gets stretched,” he explains. “So, there are a lot of aftermarket gold bands that are not really made by Rolex. They’re heavily faked.”

13. Check the Dealer ’s Credentials

Due diligence is extremely important when making a purchase. If you’re planning to buy online, check the merchant’s rating. Ask the seller for references from watch associations like the International Watch and Jewelry Guild . Inquire with his or her previous clients about their experience.

• The most apparent difference between the hour markers on the two watches is the material used, which is the first noticeable inconsistency. The hour markers on the counterfeit Rolex appear to be of lower quality than those on the authentic Rolex, and they appear to be sticker-like in appearance.
• The hour markers on the authentic Rolex have even and symmetrical silver borders surrounding their shapes. On the other hand, the hour markers on the Rolex replica have uneven borders around the shapes of almost every marker. This is a distinctive characteristic of Rolex watches, as you can observe it on each hour marker, as well as on the hour, minute, and seconds hands of an authentic Rolex, but it is not present on the replica.
• The absence of lume application can also be detected by the watch’s lack of glow in the dark, which is evident in this counterfeit Rolex as it does not exhibit any luminescent properties.
• The wording font on the replica is different than on the real Rolex in the following ways:

• The cyclops glass feature at 3 o’clock is supposed to magnify the date number by 2.5x legibility.
• The cyclops glass always protrudes above the crystal, like a bubble—it is never flat and never fitted under the crystal.
• A way to identify a fake Rolex is by observing its date feature. Rolex watches have an instantaneous date display, meaning the date changes precisely at midnight, not gradually. If a Rolex replica shows an in-between date (mid roll) on the dial, it is a telltale sign of a fake since the real Rolex would change the date immediately. This characteristic might not be noticeable unless you have the watch for more than a day, but ideally, you should have already identified the counterfeit before then.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex with Laser-Etched Coronet (LEC) on Glass

• On modern Rolex watches produced after 2001, there is a tiny laser-etched coronet/crown (LEC) on the glass at the 6 o’clock position. This is an additional measure taken by Rolex to stay ahead of counterfeiters and establish another authenticity indicator on their timepieces. The LEC feature is incredibly difficult to replicate because the crown is not simply engraved or etched onto the glass but is instead embedded within it. How to Spot a Fake Rolex Bezel

Rolex watches have various styles, colors, and materials for their bezels. Knowing the basics about Rolex bezels, especially for the watch under scrutiny, can be helpful when checking for authenticity. For instance, fluted bezels on authentic Rolex watches are made of 18k gold. Hence, if you come across a watch with a fluted bezel made of platinum or stainless steel, it is undoubtedly a fake Rolex.

The GMT-Master and GMT-Master II collections have a unique two-tone bezel in different color combinations. Any Rolex watch with a two-tone bezel will have a distinct line dividing the face of the watch horizontally through the numbers 6 and 18 on the bezel markers. If the two colors appear to bleed into each other or the colors split anywhere else on the bezel besides the numbers 6 and 18, then that watch is a fake Rolex.

Additionally, modern Rolex watches made in 2001 and later have a tiny laser-etched coronet/crown (LEC) on the glass at 6 o’clock. This feature is hard to replicate, and its implementation varies across different Rolex models. Therefore, researching when the LEC feature was applied to a specific Rolex model is advisable.

Rolex Fake vs Real – Bezel

• There is a significant difference in the width of the bezels between the two watches. The bezel on the fake Rolex is visibly narrower compared to the bezel on the authentic Rolex.
• When comparing the bezels of the real Rolex and the counterfeit watch, the font on the numbers is noticeably distinct. Specifically, the numbers on the replica bezel appear bolder and thicker compared to the font on the genuine Rolex bezel. One can easily spot this difference by comparing the numbers 2, 4, and 5 on both bezels.
• The lume pip located at the 12 o’clock position on the authentic Rolex bezel is distinguished by a silver lining around it and fits seamlessly within the confines of the triangle marker surrounding it. Conversely, the lume pip on the counterfeit Rolex’s bezel has a larger, thicker border that extends outside the triangle marker’s boundary. Additionally, it lacks lume material, rendering it unable to glow in the dark like the authentic Rolex bezel’s pip.
• On the genuine Rolex, the numbers and markers on the bezel are deeply engraved and have a distinct groove on the surface, whereas the bezel on the counterfeit watch is completely smooth with no groove.
• A real Rolex watch features engravings on the inner ring of its bezel, also known as the “rehaut”. The word “ROLEX” is engraved five times on both the right and left sides, with a tiny Rolex crown logo at the 12 o’clock position, and the watch’s serial number at 6 o’clock. Older Rolex watches may have these details laser-etched instead of engraved, but Rolex started using engravings in 2005 to make them harder to replicate. If the rehaut of a bezel has no engravings or something else engraved on it, it is likely a fake. In the case of this replica, the rehaut has no engravings or etchings and is simply a reflective, mirror-like surface.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Case

When searching for indications of a counterfeit Rolex, there are various features on the watch case that reveal its authenticity or lack thereof. As previously mentioned, authentic Rolex timepieces are made of the finest quality materials, which is typically the most apparent indication of whether a Rolex watch is genuine or fake. Replicas are usually crafted from inferior and cheaper materials, which frequently manifests in the overall appearance and texture of the watch. Additionally, specifics about the design and form of specific features on a Rolex watch case can serve as signs of its legitimacy, which are illustrated in the comparison photos below.

• The lugs on the genuine Rolex appear thicker and more substantial compared to the skinnier, slender, and tapered lugs on the replica.
• The real Rolex has lugs with a brushed metal surface, whereas the lugs on the replica have a polished metal surface. This contrast is noticeable in both the shine and the texture of the surfaces.
• The authentic Rolex has its serial number engraved between the lugs when the metal bracelet is removed, which is not the case with the counterfeit watch.
• The disparity in the shape of the crown guards is another conspicuous dissimilarity between the two timepieces. The crown guards on the counterfeit watch have a more pointed appearance compared to the genuine Rolex. This difference is evident when viewing the watches side by side or from a profile angle.
• The designs on the winding crowns also differ noticeably. On the authentic Rolex, the markings of three small dots under the crown and the Rolex crown itself protrude outwards, whereas on the counterfeit, the markings are much flatter.

Rolex Fake vs Real – Winding Crown

To clarify, it should be noted that certain older steel and yellow gold Rolex watches with the Twinlock waterproof feature, which provides up to 100 meters (300 feet) of water resistance, do have a small line under the crown. However, the Submariner 116610 model being discussed here is equipped with a Triplock winding crown, which ensures water resistance up to 300 meters (1,000 feet). Triplock winding crowns always have three dots below the coronet symbol, regardless of the watch’s material. Therefore, the incorrect marking on the winding crown of this replica watch clearly indicates that it is not authentic. To help identify other fake Rolex watches, the visual guide below shows the markings on winding crowns for different Rolex models made from different materials and with either the Twinlock or Triplock features:

• The caseback of a watch may often be overlooked, but it can provide clear indicators of its authenticity. Unlike other brands, Rolex does not equip its timepieces with transparent casebacks. However, there are a few exceptions, such as if the watch was part of a professional team that participated in a Rolex event and won.
• There is a noticeable difference in the quality of finish on the casebacks of both watches. The genuine Rolex has a much better finish with consistent color of the steel and a smooth brushed surface throughout. On the other hand, the counterfeit Rolex has an inconsistent color with mixed colored metal visible on the caseback. This is further emphasized by the deeper grooves of the brush strokes on the surface.

It should be noted that there are some exceptions to the general rule outlined above. For instance, certain Rolex watches such as the Milgauss , Deepsea, vintage Sea Dweller , some gold Lady Datejusts , and military Submariners do have specific patented markings on their caseback. However, in the case of the counterfeit watch being discussed, which is a replica of a non-military Rolex Submariner, there should not be any engravings or markings on the caseback. As Rolex has become more and more well-known, the symbol of wealth and status that it carries becomes greater and greater. This also means that the demand from those who can’t or do not want to pay the price for the real deal increases.

There are two ways you can spot a fake Rolex by its case back. The first is if the watch has a see-through case back. Today, Rolex does not make a model with a see-through case back and has only made a handful of watches with see-through case backs previously.

The other tell is engravings. Apart from just a few exceptions, such as the vintage COMEX Submariner, Rolex does not engrave the exterior of its case backs. If you see engravings on the watch, it’s most likely a replica – especially if the watch is of a newer model. Of course, a Rolex can have a personal engraving such as a name or a date, but Rolex engraves no logos, no text, or model names on the case backs of any of their newer models.

The case back varies depending on the model, but the best is to have a look at a photo of the casebook of the model you have, and then compare that with the watch you have in front of you.

Just like the overall feel of the watch, if you feel a real Rolex bracelet and then a fake bracelet, you’ll notice a considerable difference in both the weight and quality of the Rolex bracelet.

This is something that you will learn over time, but when you have some expertise and experience, you will only need to hold the bracelet of a counterfeit Rolex watch for a few seconds in many cases in order to tell that it is fake. The main reason is that they don’t feel as solid and robust as the real Rolex bracelets.

The replica bracelets tend to be made of low-quality metal, and oftentimes, you will be able to feel the low quality in your hand. Of course, there are fake bracelets made of higher quality too, and these are not as easy to spot.

  Genuine Rolex bracelets feel robust and strong, made only of the best materials. The bracelet of a fake Rolex often jangles and just sounds low-quality. If you want to take it one step further, if you have a steel Rolex bracelet, you can inspect the steel type of bracelet, either by measuring the density or with the help of a tool. Rolex uses 904L steel in its watches, unlike any other watch manufacturer, whereas other brands, and most often counterfeiters, 316L steel.

Now, have in mind that vintage Rolex bracelets can have a lot of stretches too, so it’s important to not get them confused.

Another good way to spot a fake Rolex by the bracelet is to look at the crown on the clasp. Rolex bracelets have the crown symbol on the clasp, which is made in different ways depending on the type of bracelet. The crown should be sharp and precise with clear lines. The ballpoints of the fake watches should be well-defined and raised up (or lowered down) depending on the model. The crown on the fake watches tends to be of low quality with no sharp edges.

Furthermore, another good way is to look at the engravings on the bracelet. The engravings should be sharp and precise, but the fakes don’t tend to be. Simply look at the photo of how the engraving of a real one should look, and then compare it with the potential fake.

In some cases, you may be able to inspect the movement of the Rolex watch . This is considering the fact that the vast majority of Rolex watches have a flat, non-see-through casebook which allows you to see the movement.

As such, in order to see the movement, you will need to open the case back lock, and you usually, need a particular tool for this.

Have in mind though, that when we say ”sweeping”, an automatic watch is also powered by ”beats”, but rather than beating 60 times per minute, a Rolex automatic movement beats several times per second, thus creating a sweeping effect.

The bottom line, is if you have access to the movement, search for an image on Google for the movement your watch is supposed to have. First, begin by identifying which movement your watch should have, for example reading our article on Rolex calibers, then looking up a picture of the movement your watch model should have, then comparing it with the movement your watch has.

If you have a hard time differentiating a ticking second hand from a swiping (quartz vs automatic), you can listen to the watch. If it ticks fast repeatedly, it’s an automatic watch. (TICKTICKTICKTICKTICK). If it’s a quartz watch (thus most likely fake), it ticks one time per second (TICK…….TICK……..TICK…..)

The Cyclops is one of the easiest and best ways to spot a fake Rolex.

Almost all Rolex watches with date functions have a magnifying cyclops glued onto the glass to make the date easier to read. This is because, without the magnifying glass, the date text is small and harder to read.

The cyclops magnifies the date by 2.5X, but most of the fake watches that replicate date models just put a piece of glass without any magnifying effect, since creating this piece of glass is difficult and expensive. And even if the counterfeiters make efforts to create a magnifying effect, they seldom get it right with 2.5X enlargement. Usually, a fake watch with a cyclops magnifies too little, but sometimes also too much. When you know how the date should look, this is often the easiest way to tell a fake watch when it has a date function.

Therefore, look at images of real Rolex watches with cyclops and see what they look like. Then compare them.

While we are on the topic of the date, another way to spot a fake Rolex is to look at the printing quality of the watch.

Normally, fake watches both have a low printing quality on the date wheel, the numbers do not have sharp lines, and they can also be misplaced and crooked.

Remember: Rolex accepts nothing less than perfection.

Make sure the model exists

This is definitely one of the best ways to spot a fake Rolex. Ensuring that the model even exists.

Furthermore, you want to make sure that the watch is made in the same way. For example, a common mistake on Fake Daytona watch is that the numbers on the sub-dials are incorrect from a real one. For example, what you can often see on the subdial of fake Daytonas is dates rather than seconds. In other words, one of the sub-dials is meant to be a date indicator, but the fact is that the Daytona does not have, and has never had, a date indicator in one of the sundials.

The best way is to learn what model the watch you are skeptical about is, and more specifically the reference number, and then learn what the real one should look like. By then comparing these, you will be able to spot whether a watch is fake or not.

You can often see Rolex watches that are made in a design, variant or color scheme which does not exist. This obviously refers to the cheaper fake Rolex watches, but this makes it the easiest way to spot a fake Rolex if you know your Rolex models.

It’s not completely uncommon that watches such as the Rolex Daytona instead of having chronographs that measure seconds, instead have date functions, and so on.

In some cases, the fake watch manufacturers have just taken a normal watch and printed a Rolex logo on the dial. These are the fake Rolexes that can be spotted from a mile away since the models are often far from what Rolex would normally make.

The rehaut of the watch is a great way to spot a fake Rolex.

Modern Rolex watches should have an engraving on the rehaut – the inner rim between the dial and the crystal.  

Rolex started introducing the engraved rehaut in 2004 and then slowly introduced it to more and more models. Today, the text is laser etched rather than engraved, which it was in the beginning.

Seen below is an early, and thus engraved rehaut.

The new laser-etched rehaut is more visible and has a brighter finish compared to the older style which is more elegant and subdued.

Rolex introduced this engraved rehaut in order to prevent counterfeit watches, but do not for one second believe that if the watch has an engraved rehaut it is real. Some counterfeiters have learned how to engrave their rehauts. But while they may be engraved, they are certainly not engraved to the same perfection as Rolex’s watches.

The engraving says ”RolexRolexRolex…” and at 6 o’clock, the serial number is engraved. Some replica watches have tried to replicate this, however, the engraving tends to just be printed on the rehaut, or is very imprecise, unlike the real deal which is done with perfection, with no inconsistencies.

Authentic Rolex engraving has the text ”RolexRolexRolexRolex” around the rehaut and a Rolex crown at 12 o’clock as well as the serial number engraved at 6 o’clock.

What is really interesting is that authentic Rolex watches have the engraving, on the right side of the rehaut so that at each 5-minute marking, the engraving ends at the letter X. On the right side of the rehaut, the engraving always starts with the letter R, as seen in the image below:

Another thing to look at when it comes to the rehaut is its angle.

Authentic Rolex reheats are slightly angled, but almost straight. Fake Rolex watches tend to struggle with the correct angle on the reheat, and in many cases, the rehaut is too polished and thus creates reflections from the indices and the dials. Furthermore, the rehaut is often too angled. These are often easy ways to spot a fake Rolex watch. An authentic Rolex watch is not so polished that the indices reflect on them like a mirror.

Dial font and print

The dial font and print are often a good way to spot a fake Rolex due to the fact that Rolex makes its print to perfection with sharp lines, whereas counterfeit watches struggle with this. Essentially all fake Rolex watches have imperfect dial printing in one way or another. Oftentimes, the printing bleeds and the lines become misaligned or not correct, other times, there can be misspellings, the printings in the wrong hue or color, etc.

When speaking of the dial, you can also look at the applied indices. On authentic Rolex watches, the luminous mass that is applied to the indices should be flat and evenly distributed. Refer to an authentic Rolex watch to understand what the indices should be like.

Counterfeit watches tend to struggle with making the indices and the luminous mass properly, applying them in the correct way, or making them the right size, so this is often a great way to tell a fake Rolex watch. Oftentimes, the indices are also often too thick, and in some cases too thin.

When it comes to the printing and the fonts, Rolex makes its watches to perfection, and if you can see inconsistencies, blurs, unevenness, spacing in the font, and ink bleeding, it’s probably a replica. Therefore, an easy way to spot a fake Rolex is to carefully inspect the dial font and text. The text should be easy to read, and there should be no misspellings, uneven letters, or similar.

Do, however, have in mind that vintage Rolexes can be a completely different story, as mentioned earlier.   Especially as these can often be 20, 30, or 40 years old, and this obviously affects the dial of the watch as well as the font and the text. In order to identify a vintage watch, you need to have more skill, knowledge, and experience.

This is a really interesting way to spot a fake Rolex.

Oftentimes, fake watches made to replicate models with special functions such as the Daytona or Yacht-Master II don’t have movements advanced enough to support these functions.

For example, if you have a Daytona, the chronograph function should work properly. If you have a Daytona and the chronograph pushers do not work, such as the sub-dials, it is most likely a fake watch.

Therefore, it’s important to try all the functions of the Rolex watch to ensure they work the way they should.

Micro-etched crown

Another way to tell a fake watch is by looking at the micro-etched crown on the glass.

Rolex  started  etching  the crystal in 2001 but it  was  not throughout the line until about 2003.

The etched crown in the sapphire crystal can barely be seen with the naked eye, but it is possible when you know where to look.

The problem is that some counterfeiters have started laser-etching the crown into the sapphire crystal which means that just because your watch has the crown doesn’t mean it is authentic.

However, since the crown is so tiny, it is difficult to make it as perfect as Rolex does it:

As you can see, the laser-etched crown is perfectly made. Fake watches that do have the crown are poorly made with a poor finish. Oftentimes, it looks like the crown is acid-etched.

If the watch doesn’t have the Rolex crown etched on the glass, chances are, it’s a replica, because this detail is so small and hard to make, replica watches tend to overlook it. It is expensive for counterfeiters to make, and the vast majority of them don’t have the necessary tools to make them.

Rolex waterproofness

All Rolex watches are water-resistant. Some are more waterproof than others. Fake watches, on the other hand, are seldom waterproof, so testing the watch’s water resistance is often a way to tell if the watch is fake or not. Have in mind, though, that if the Rolex is old and hasn’t been serviced for a long time, it may, despite being authentic, not be waterproof anymore. Testing the watch’s waterproofness is thus not the ideal method to spot a fake Rolex on.

Rolex Serial numbers

Another way to spot a fake Rolex is to look at the serial numbers of the watch.

The serial number can be found engraved on the rehaut at 6 o’clock.

The serial number should be perfectly laser-engraved the way the ”Rolex text” is with perfectly engraved fine lines.

Replicas often have tiny dots making up the engraving, and others have a sandy texture in the engraving (laser etching) as opposed to Rolex’s clear and smooth engraving.

The winding crown on a fake Rolex is of low quality and has a basic look, while a real Rolex has a quality feel to it. The side of the winding crown also has the Rolex coronet on it, and this should be well-defined with clear contrasts.

Rolex Metal

The metal is often a dead giveaway and an easy way to spot a fake Rolex. In particular, if the watch is supposed to be in precious metal. Some Rolex watches only exist in certain precious metals, for example, the Platinum Day-Date or Day-Date which is made in either platinum, yellow gold, rose gold, or white gold.

Obviously making a fake Rolex watch in a real precious metal does not make financial sense, so if the fake watch is supposed to be in gold, it is instead painted gold. As a result, the watch does not have the same weight as a real precious metal watch. Furthermore, it does not have the same sheen and looks that real precious metal has. In many cases, since the gold is only plated or painted, it will start to wear off over time. Have in mind that Rolex only makes its precious metal in solid gold and not plated.  

So if you find a Rolex watch where you can see the gold coming off, it is definitely fake.

Compare Rolex models

The first step to identifying a fake Rolex is to see if that model even exists. Some replicas are so poorly made that they’ve just written a Rolex model on the dial of a watch that looks completely different from the real model.

But if you’ve found that the model does in fact exist, the best way to see if a watch is fake is to take up a picture of a real Rolex and then compare the two. Is there anything that stands out on the watch? Compare it to a picture of the watch it is trying to replicate and see if you can find any differences.

This is the best and easiest way to spot a fake Rolex when you don’t have much experience or knowledge. Simply compare it with a photo of a real one. It is of course even better if you have a real one to compare with, in the flesh, but this may not always be possible.

Rolex Weight

Because Rolex watches are made from solid metals, whether from precious metals or steel, authentic Rolex watches usually have quite some heft to them.

Fake Rolex watches tend to be made of low-quality materials and do thus not carry the same heft to them as authentic Rolex watches.

Rolex Bezel

Lastly, a way to spot a fake Rolex is to look at the bezel. Different Rolex watches have different bezels, but if it has numbers on them, they should be sharp and very clearly defined.

For example, a ceramic bezel has numbers on them, and the paint inside of those numbers should be perfectly applied inside the engraving. If the numbers are raised, for example on the Yacht-Master, the numbers should have clear lines. Make sure that they are also in the same font as an authentic one.

The best way to avoid buying a fake Rolex is by buying from reputable sources. Here are the best ways to avoid buying a fake Rolex.

Buy from reputable sources

As mentioned, the absolute best way to avoid buying a fake Rolex is to only buy from trusted sellers.

These sellers will never sell a fake watch and will do the inspection and authenticity check for you. When buying from these sellers, you can trust their expertise and knowledge.

If it is too good to be true, it usually is

If you get an offer to buy a Rolex at a price that is almost too good to be true, it usually is. If it is offered by a trusted seller, you need to be a little less careful, but if you are buying from a   private person or a source you don’t trust, it’s better to stay away unless you have expertise and experience enough to easily spot a fake Rolex watch.

When it comes to auctions, it’s not necessarily that they intentionally sell fake watches, but they may not have enough expertise to tell a fake Rolex from the real deal. As these sellers don’t have enough experience, you as a buyer need to have enough experience and do your due diligence if you are going to buy a watch.

Rolex does not have an official database of serial numbers that they share with the public. This means that it is not possible to tell if a watch is fake by sharing the serial number with a watchmaker or an authorized Rolex retailer. No one except Rolex themselves have access to a database of their watches’ serial numbers, and they will under no circumstances share this information.

• Listen for a ticking sound. If the watch is ticking, it's not a real Rolex.

Soundless movement

• The mechanical movement that powers a Rolex is self-winding. You will never have to wind an authentic Rolex watch.

Smooth second hand

• Rolex magnification windows usually magnify the date to 2.5x; the date should take up nearly the entire window. Some good counterfeits may magnify the date a little, but the date won't fill up the entire window.

• Rolex uses a proprietary stainless steel alloy for their watches called Oystersteel.
• If the back casing looks metal on the outside but has a plastic inner case, the watch isn't genuine.

How to tell if a Rolex is real?

It is best to buy a Rolex watch from a reputable seller to prevent purchasing a fake Rolex. Forged Rolex watches can retail for around £20 to £600, which can be manufactured cheaply in China or Asia. It is an example of how to tell if a Rolex is real, as the price may be less than £1000.

Here are some ways of telling if your Rolex is real or not:

1. The Serial/Model Number Stamping

• Real – A genuine Rolex will have an excellent and sharp engraving of the model and serial number located between the Lugs (where the watch strap fits).
• Fake – A fake Rolex will have a thick letter engraving, and the serial number will appear smudged.

2. Rolex Movement

• Real – Each component inside the Rolex will have the logo “Rolex” engraved into it. It allows smooth movement, and there would be no ticking sounds.
• Fake – A fake Rolex will have a quartz dial movement, this is one of the reasons why the second hand won’t consistently move, and the speed will vary (fast, slow, stutters). Also, due to the quartz movement, there will be a ticking noise which a real Rolex won’t have.

3. Cyclops is the magnifying glass which zooms in on the display date

• Real – A real Rolex will have the display date zoomed in by 2.5x with a bold number.
• Fake – A fake Rolex will have the display date zoomed by 1.5x or lower and would have a thin font rather than bold.

4. Waterproof ability – only for 3 seconds in water

• Real – To test if your Rolex is genuine, you would have to dip it in water for a few seconds. If there is no water inside the dial, then it shows your watch is real.
• Fake – However, if you carry this experiment out and there is water inside the dial, then it shows your watch is fake as it is susceptible to water infiltration.

5. Weight of a Rolex watch

• Real – A real Rolex watch will feel heavy as it is made from 18 Karats of stainless steel, platinum or gold. It includes each component being carefully picked and mechanised. An example would be the “Oystersteel” which is 904L stainless steel, making it resistant to rust and corrosion.
• Fake – A fake Rolex would feel light as there would be fewer materials used.

6. Case back

• Real – Most Rolex watches would have a smooth stainless back case with no engravings (unless personalised). However, there are two watches called “Rolex Oyster Original Gas Escape Valve” and the “Milgauss Model”, which do have engravings as they are rare vintage pieces from the 1930s. Other than that, if there are any engravings including the logo, then it most likely will be a fake.
• Fake – A fake Rolex will have a clear case back, which will allow you to see the movement of the watch.

7. Micro-etched Crown

• Real – From 2002 onwards, the Rolex company decided to etch a small crown with raised bumps next to the 6 ‘O’ Clock dial. It proves the authenticity of the watch as it can be magnified to show the crown.
• Fake – To recognise if your watch is fake, then it would be if the crown is visible from a distance, making it fake.

The refief on the bezel (not to speak of other things) is so cheaply done, that you wouldn't find one of those in a bubble gum vending machine. This is an emetic. You need a master cast and not a cast taken from a bezel which came out of a master cast. If all fakes would be of that horrible quality, then we wouldn't have much problems with such trash, and whoever buys garbage like that, does really deserve it.
