7 Night Sample Sailing Itinerary in BVI

The British Virgin Islands are a collection of 60 unspoiled islands that make a great 7 day sailing vacation. Catamaran charter guests can visit a different island every day. Explore the natural beauty and first class sailing and charter a catamaran with The Catamaran company.

For those considering a trip, here is some inspiration to help you get it booked now! There are a great number of ways to spend 7 nights in the BVI and the good news is they are all fabulous. Here is one example when aboard a catamaran charter in British Virgin Islands.

Night 1 - Evening Start at the Dock

Nothing beats the anticipation of arriving to the base, finding your catamaran charter you booked and getting settled into your new home for the next week. Get everything stowed, enjoy some cocktails and settle into the speed of the islands.

Night 2 - Norman Island, The Bight

It seems that the Bight is likely the first night for about 90% of BVI cruisers and it is a rock solid way to start your week at sea. It's an easy sail from Tortola and stopping to snorkel at either The Indians or the Norman Island caves is an awesome first day activity. Grab a mooring ball and enjoy paddle boarding in the protected calm of The Bight, having sundowners and watching the sunset. When the sun goes down, head to Pirate's Bight restaurant to enjoy rum punch, pain killers and one of the best menus in the islands. Cap off the day with a trip to the incomparable Willie T's Floating Bar and Restaurant and enjoy the new and bigger Willie T open May 15, 2018.

Night 3 - Cooper Island, Manchioneel Bay

After your first breakfast at sea, stop for a snorkel at either the caves or The Indians before heading east to Cooper Island. Consider exploring Wreck of the Rhone or one of the other snorkel spots off Salt Island on your way to Cooper. Manchioneel Bay and Cooper Island Beach Club (opening April 1st!) are big time fan favorites and there is good snorkeling at both ends of the bay. Lots of barracuda, tarpon, turtles, conch and stingray make this a fun place to explore.

Night 4 - Virgin Gorda, Leverick Bay

Get an early start from Cooper and head to Fallen Jerusalem for a quick snorkel before you stop at The Baths. The Baths are a must do and a great spot to enjoy lunch while resting on a mooring ball. If you have time, stop at Great Dog for an amazing snorkel on the west side of the island; not an overnight spot but there are three national park mooring balls and it is beautiful. Continue on to North Sound and head to Leverick Bay Resort and Marina. They have a great restaurant, a pool, water at the dock (closes at 5pm) and a well-stocked market so you can re-provision. This is a great stop half way through your charter, allowing you to re-provision.

Night 5 - Anegada

This will be an absolute highlight of your trip. The sail to Anegada is one of the best of the trip and well worth the effort. Leaving North Sound by 8:30am or 9am will put you on a mooring ball at Anegada by lunchtime and ready for an afternoon exploring the island. Go ashore and take a taxi or rent a scooter and head to Cow Wreck Beach and see Ann at Cow Wreck Beach Bar. This place may actually be heaven! Dinner Tip - Figure out where you are eating before you go to the beach and place your order for dinner as they need it in advance.

Night 6 - Great Harbour, Jost van Dyke

Sailing from Anegada to Jost van Dyke will almost undoubtedly be the best sail of your trip. The wind is almost always perfect and the seas will be in your favor. If you have fishing gear and a license this is also a great opportunity to catch something you can actually eat like a tuna, wahoo or dorado. Leave on the early side so you can make stop along the way; possibilities include White Bay on Guana Island, Sandy Cay or The Bubbly Pool. Alternatively, head directly to White Bay on JVD and spend the afternoon at Soggy Dollar Bar, Hendo's Hideout, Coco Loco or Ivan's Stress free Bar before grabbing a mooring ball in Great Harbour for your visit to the legendary Foxy's.

Night 7 - Peter Island / Cooper Island / Norman Island

It's your last night at sea so pick your poison as each of these islands will enable you to get back to the base on time in the morning. It is about a 45 minute trip from either Cooper or Peter and about an hour and fifteen minutes from Norman.

There are countless other "favorite spots" and it's impossible to see them all in one visit - but that will keep you coming back each year for more!.

Enjoy a Relaxing BVI Sailing Adventure with Kuralu Catamaran Charters!

September 10th, 2019

Gary Cottreau, owner of Kuralu Catamaran Charters, reached out to remind everyone that they were back in business quickly after Irma. He said, "We have been operating daysails and charters on our yacht...

Kuralu Catamaran Charters - Day Dream

To that end, we met our goals. In the past 7 years there have been over 1.2 million visits to the website and over 3 million pages have been viewed. There are over 1,000 pages on the site featuring news posts and detailed listings on all hotels, villas, restaurants and sailing charters located in the BVI. The BVI Government and many business, hotels, villas and sailing charters have all agreed that the site “moved the needle on tourism” after Irma.

The site, however, has run its course. It has served its purpose by bringing visitors and local businesses together to rebuild the tourist industry and it is now time to shut down operations for good.

I want to thank everyone for your help and support.

Lagoon 62ft - 2014

Yacht description.

Sail Away is a 2014 Lagoon 62 catamaran. It is spacious and modern and offers five queen size cabins, all with ensuite facilities. All the linens are of the highest quality and colours are very tranquil and relaxing. The salon and galley have loads of natural light from the wraparound windows plus there is really good headroom, which adds to the light and airy feel. The comfortable leather sofa can also be used as a formal dining option.

Outside there are three spots with plenty of space so everyone can have their own privacy should they want it. The cockpit offers a shaded dining option as well as comfy seating and a lounging pad. “Upstairs”, the flybridge offers a further space to relax and then forward there are trampolines for the sun worshippers. Three crew members that include a dedicated, award-winning chef, ensure your every need is met, even with 10 guests aboard.

Our personal opinion

Why book Sail Away – ENJOYING THE WATER – Sail Away has an excellent selection of water toys and a 15ft dinghy with a 60hp motor so it is perfect for skiing or wakeboarding. Add to this, the hydraulic lift for the dinghy at the back of the boat doubles as a perfect sunbathing platform, or a place to dabble your feet in the water with a cocktail in your hand.

Rendezvous diving

bvi sailing catamaran trip

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.

SAMPLE ITINERARY FOR THE BVI:

The Bight at Norman Island makes the perfect anchorage to head for on your first night. After crossing Sir Francis Drake Channel you will sail past The Indians and Pelican Island. Dead ahead is a  protected anchorage to grab your first overnight mooring.

The Bight makes such a great first night stop as it is well protected, has loads of moorings, and offers good snorkeling. You’ll also find a lovely restaurant in the left corner called Pirates Bight and the historic Willy T, which is on anchor. Once you are secure on your overnight mooring, jump in the dinghy and make your way over to The Caves. You’ll find a splendid National Park site with natural caves to explore and teeming with sea life, therefore a great first snorkel.

As the sun is dropping in the sky, you’ll want to return to the boat, scrub up and dinghy ashore for dinner. Pirates Bight is a lively, family-oriented beach bar and restaurant. On the other hand, you could opt for the Willy T. This famous floating bar and restaurant made a name for itself many years ago. They offered a free T-Shirt to anyone who jumped off the top deck naked! Health and Safety stepped in to prevent this ritual but it still has a reputation for being fun and noisy. It’s not for everybody but if you are looking to party and have a good time, this a must do.

At first light, motor straight over to the Indians, as it is close enough to leave the sails at rest. Once you’ve picked up a National Park mooring buoy you can leisurely take in the spectacular rock formations before snorkeling. Take in the lavish corals, an array of sealife and colorful sponges which contrast with the rocky ledges and steep walls that rise to the surface.

Next, sail to Great Harbor, Peter Island. Here you will pick up a mooring for the night and either dine at Ocean’s 7 or fire up the BBQ. Peter Island has 5 gorgeous white sand beaches and offers great snorkeling and swimming with turtles popping up throughout. Just off of Key Point you will find one of the newest dive sites, established in 2019, the sunken original Willy T. This an underwater pirate-themed shipwreck playground for divers, complete with skeletal pirates going about their daily business. Don’t miss this one!

Following breakfast, sail to the wreck of The Rhone, sunk in 1867, just off of Salt Island for a stunning morning dive/snorkel. Next, tack up to Cooper Island in the early afternoon and grab your overnight mooring in Manchioneel Bay. Then swim over to Cistern Point for more snorkeling, relaxing on the beach or chillin’ by the bar at the Cooper Island Beach Club. For the evening, you can either dine ashore at the restaurant (be certain to call for reservations) or barbeque on your boat.

*Due to the plentiful turtle grass on the sea bottom, there is a strict ‘no anchoring’ policy in effect at Cooper Island. So be sure to get there early for a mooring or reserve one first thing in the morning.

Get an early start and tack up the Sir Francis Drake Channel to The Baths on the southern end of Virgin Gorda. Once there, pick up a National Parks mooring, dinghy part of way in and tie off at the dinghy line provided. From there you and your crew will need to swim to the beach. Do pay attention to the flag system on the beach  there is a north swell.

You can spend the whole day exploring the tunnels, caves and crystal-clear pools through the maze of massive boulders. By the way, they have been resting here for literally millions of years! Enjoy a little lunch on board before heading back across the channel towards Marina Cay. Although Pusser’s no longer have a presence at Marina Cay, there is still amazing snorkeling and swimming to be had. Another option is to stay at Scrub Island in the resort’s marina and enjoy their fantastic 2 story pool and restaurants.

Today you’ll be heading to North Sound, Virgin Gorda where you will find a little something for everyone. Why not break up your sail with a stop at The Dogs? An excellent snorkeling and diving site as with all National Parks, it is a cluster of three small islets.

After lunch, onward up into the North Sound, being sure to use the well-marked north entrance and not the shortcut next to Mosquito Island. Your destination, Leverick Bay, has everything that a sailor or landlubber could want. The amenities include: a full service spa that can even accommodate you aboard, a complete marina, pool, restaurant, beach bar, live entertainment most nights, water sports, shopping, and a market for provisions plus a deli. In fact, there’s too much to list, definitely worth a stop over!

If weather permits, sail to Anegada early in the morning (leave by 9 AM!), which is an easy 2-3 hour trip from the North Sound due North. Be sure you called the office first to get the OK!

There is only one anchorage and make sure you go in between the red and green entry markers. By the time you’ve picked up one of the 30 mooring buoys, you and your crew will be ready to explore. Choose either a taxi or rented car for the day to visit Loblolly Bay, Cow Wreck and Anegada Beach Club. In addition to the beautiful white beaches, you will fall in love with the Roseate Flamingos, rare rock iguanas, manmade conch islands and splendid plant species like sea lavender. The fantastic outer reef, Horseshoe Reef, is rich in marine life and perfect for snorkeling or diving and dotted with shipwrecks. Anegada is the most scenic watersports playground in the region, especially for kiteboarders and paddle boarders alike.  And for Dinner….? Lobster of course!

As the sun rises get set to sail west, downwind, towards Jost Van Dyke. It’s important to realize that this will be your longest sail, therefore it would be a good idea to stop for a morning snorkel at Monkey Point, Guana Island.

Given that Monkey Point is another national park, you’ll find an abundance of marine life. As a matter of fact, yellowtail snappers, bluestriped grunts and yellow jacks, along with turtles and tarpon call this home. Next, continue to Great Harbor on Jost Van Dyke, home to Foxy’s where they are well known for live music and barbeques on the weekends. With this in mind, it makes for a great stop for the whole family. In fact, you can pick up your overnight mooring, then jump in the dinghy and head around the point into White Bay. Enjoy a ‘Painkiller’ at the Soggy Dollar Bar or a Delirious Donkey at Hendo’s Hideout before heading back around to Great Harbor for dinner.

Last but not least, you’ll have a long upwind sail ahead, so leave early (ish). You will be sailing around the West End of Tortola and up the channel to BVI Yacht Charters at Ritter Marina, Road Town by noon. Remember to give us a call before you arrive in order to check your docking details. Subsequently, we’ll have a taxi waiting once we have refueled you at our fuel dock and checked the boat back in with our team.

ADVANCE YOUR KNOWLEDGE…

For those interested in additional studying, NauticEd offers an online chart briefing you can do in advance of your trip. The cost is $13 and it can be done by as many of your crew as you wish. The online chart briefing is NOT a substitute for the full chart briefing on arrival.

You have booked a yacht charter to the BVI, you have all your flights and detailed arranged and it’s coming close to your departure time, so it’s time to start packing, but what to pack for a BVI sailing trip ?

Choosing and identifying what to pack for a BVI sailing trip  can be challenging especially when you have no idea where to start or what to leave at home. The cabin in yachts are smaller than regular hotel rooms and storage space is limited everything you bring with you is required to stay within the yacht and taken everywhere with you.

  • 2. Toiletries

4. Miscellaneous

  • 5. Must Bring
  • 6. Leave At Home

1. Quick Dry Clothes

What to Pack for a BVI Sailing Trip. It can be challenging to find and identify what to pack for a BVI sailing trip, not wanting to overpack due to limited space but making sure you have everything you need for your yacht charter.

List To Pack . We have identified the main clothing items require and which can be included in our what to pack for a BVI sailing trip guide. Everyone has different requirements and like wearing different clothing items but this list will cover the basics.

  • T-Shirts (between 2 – 4, depending on the length of your charter)

  • Wet weather gear (if sailing in the low season)
  • Street shoes (for exploring off the boat)
  • Boat shoes (with white soles, non-marking to not mark the floors of the boat)
  • Flip flops, sandals, or water shoes

All clothing items on your what to pack for a BVI sailing trip list should be preferably made from quick-drying or light materials to ensure they dry quickly as they could get wet at any point.

2. Bio Friendly Toiletries

Bio Friendly Toiletries. All the toiletries you use on the boat and flush down the toilet or drain end up in the ocean. As a result of this where possible bio-friendly toiletries such as shampoo, soap, sunscreen, toothpaste, and other flushable toiletries to help protect our oceans from being damaged and contaminated.

What To Pack For A BVI Sailing Trip . We have identified the main toiletries required and which can be included in our what to pack for a BVI sailing trip list. Everyone has different requirements and like using different toiletries.

In the BVI, you can purchase basic toiletries with brands that you can find in other countries, but within marina shops, it is more expensive and you will only be able to purchase large bottles.

Limited Storage Space. When deciding what to pack for a BVI sailing trip keep in mind that storage space on boats are very limited so if you bring to much stuff you will be surrounded by it for the next week. Quick-dry clothing products are great as they are often smaller than regular clothes and can be stored away easily.

What To Pack For A BVI Sailing Trip. After you have decided what to pack for a BVI sailing trip, it’s time to identify a suitable bag to carry everything in. It is heavily advised not to bring a hard suitcase, as these take up a lot of space in the cabin. It is advised to pack your belonging within a soft suitcase that can be folded down to flat. Duffle bags, soft cases with wheels, backpacks, or any other kind of soft luggage is ideal.

Additional Items. When deciding what to pack for a BVI sailing trip there are some essential items that you shouldn’t leave your house without. The same as when you go on a normal holiday or leave the house for the weekend you take your essential items with you and when deciding what to pack for a BVI sailing trip, these essential items are even more important to remember to pack.

What To Pack For A BVI Sailing Trip. We have identified the main required items to bring on any yacht charter.

  • Passport and driving license plus photocopies for everyone onboard (you never know what might happen so a photocopy for your driving license is a must carry)

6. Items To Leave At Home

What To Pack For A BVI Sailing Trip. It is easy to overpack items, so limit the number of things you bring onboard to avoid cluttering the boat with ‘stuff’.

Items To Leave At Home. We have identified the main items required and the following items should be avoided in our what to pack for a BVI sailing trip list. Everyone has different requirements and likes doing and using different things, but these items are some that you can leave at home for safety reasons and to declutter your yacht.
