AZTECA Yacht – Extraordinary $80M Superyacht

CRN’s naval architects worked with Ferretti Group’s Advanced Yacht Technology department and Venice-based Nuvolari Lenard design to build a boat that is modern, elegant, and perfect for family life at sea.

Delivered in 2010, AZTECA is an impressive 72m yacht designed for a comfortable yet elegant onboard experience.

The original owner who commissioned the AZTECA, Francisco Hernando, was very involved in the design elements of the yacht.

AZTECA yacht interior

Nuvolari Lenard’s Valentina Zannier designed the interior of the AZTECA yacht which includes warm and sober tones from cream to dark brown and features walnut, glossy rosewood, and mahogany.

The yacht has accommodation for 16 guests in 8 cabins and cabins to house 28 crew members.

The crew members also have a crew mess and gym on the tank deck. There is a sky lounge, a separate cinema room, a spa, and a hair salon.

She also has an expansive sundeck full of amenities for entertaining in the indoor/outdoor space.

Francisco Hernando, the original owner, was intimately involved in the vessel’s design to create a guest experience close to the water.

The beach club is impressively sized and opens with a massive transom door that creates an indoor/outdoor area with a bar and salon.

The tender garage is filled with water toys like jet skis and a low-profile tender. The yacht features extensive pantry options, making it an excellent vessel for entertaining.

The entertainment features of the AZTECA yacht were one of the many reasons that Pliego bought the $80 Million Superyacht.

Her exterior exudes elegance and power with a streamlined gray-painted steel hull and light cream-colored aluminum superstructure. She has teak decking and consists of 4 decks.

The exterior was designed by Nuvolari Lenard and built by CRN yachts in 2010. Azteca is the largest boat built by CRN at the time of her launch.

Motor Yacht

Motor yacht Azteca, formally Clarena II, was built in 2009 by Italian shipyard CRN and at the time of her launch she was the largest yacht ever to be launched by the company. With a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she features naval architecture by CRN and the interior and exterior design talents of Nuvolari & Lenard. This twin-screw superyacht measures 72 metres and can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Built specifically for guests to interact closely with the ocean, motor yacht Azteca is the latest build for the previous owner of the 2003, 46 metre Clarena also designed by Nuvolari & Lenard.

The new Azteca, known as hull number 124, was designed through thoughtful analysis of the Owner’s wishes, resulting in a dashing hull-shape, a sharp bow, and modern, streamlined external forms.

Her owner desired a yacht that would be a perfect tribute to family life at sea, and her designers honoured this request by incorporating an innovative 100 square-metre beach club aft.

Here, the swim platform transforms into a large beach area almost in the sea itself, fully equipped with a shower and chairs ideal for sunbathing. For those who wish to sit inside, the adjoining internal area is designed for comfort and relaxation, outfitted with sofas so guests can enjoy the proximity of the sea.

Amongst her six cabins are a lavish owner suite and five double cabins. The accommodations are well-worth a mention onboard Azteca; the Owner’s suite alone covers 120 square-metres. Found forward on the main deck, the suite is accessed via private lobby and includes his and hers bathroom, separate massage room and cinema room. Perhaps most striking of all is the hatch that can be lowered 90 degrees to act as a balcony hovering directly over the waves.

There are also accommodations onboard to cater for a crew of up to 28.

Luxury yacht Azteca is powered by two Caterpillar 3516B-CHD engines that allow her to reach a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and cruise comfortably at 15 knots. She can achieve a range of 6,000 nautical miles while cruising at a speed of 12 knots.

As the largest CRN yacht ever built, the 124 needed her own special operating structure to be built. Measuring 95 metres long and 25 metres high, the 2,660 square-metre structure becomes the biggest in the production facility.

CRN , the luxury yachting Ferretti Group brand, has recently unveiled its latest mega yacht, Azteca . At 72 metres, Azteca, is the largest yacht to be produced by CRN and the longest coming out of Italy this year.

Azteca combines a “made in italy” style with cutting-edge design and technology. The sophisticated slender shape of the hull and the racy external lines, accentuated by the pronounced stern characterize and distinguish the Azteca from other mega yachts of its size – breaking the expectation that big boats can’t have a “sporty” soul.

Azteca was created in collaboration with Nuvolari & Lenard , renowned Italian luxury yacht designers.

“Our design team and production house truly rose to the challenge of delivering Azteca; our passion and dedication to our craft is apparent in our longest and most technologically advanced yacht to date. Carefully designed to ensure guests feel a strong bond with the sea, Azteca pays homage to luxury and refinement”, – comments Lamberto Tacoli, chairman of CRN and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of the Ferretti Group.

At the stern of the lower deck, a completely innovative area has been designed as an authentic “beach club” of more than 100 sq m. This area can be transformed into a large beach close to the sea and is equipped with an external shower and a sun deck. At the back there is a wide indoor space for relaxation where guests can lie on comfortable sofas by the sea and enjoy aperitifs from the bar.

The main deck hosts the ship owner’s suite as well as two suites which serve as accommodation for some of the 12 guests. The owner’s suite was designed to link directly to the sea through a door which can be folded at 90 degrees from within the cabin to act as a “terrace” overlooking the ocean. The two bathrooms, one reserved for each half of the ship owning couple, are entirely covered with marble and embellished with inserts of brown Tiger’s eye for the male bathroom and a slab of mother-of-pearl for the female room. A cinema room equipped with a 65-inch screen, a large wardrobe and a massage room complete the owner’s suite.

On the lower deck, there are two VIP cabins for guests and two standard cabins for the staff at their service. This deck also holds 12 lodgings reserved for the crew who can enjoy a wide space organised so that it facilitates their living and working in the best way possible. The wide spaces of the lower deck are also used for storage: refrigerating cells, the laundry area and two big garages holding 10 metre long Riva Shuttles with a maximum speed of 45 knots, a seven metre long service tender and four jet skis.

The upper deck incorporates a different layout to make the most of wide spaces. It includes the “Special VIP” cabin which has a wide view and complete discretion, and the captain’s cabin which is at the stem, in a cabin adjacent to the radio room and the steerage, equipped with the most modern navigation systems. A large panoramic lift with crystal walls and a decorated marble floor links the three upper decks.

The sun deck of the Azteca is unique at 33 metres long and 10 metres wide. It is entirely dedicated to outdoor life with large sofas, a bar area, jacuzzi and several sun beds as well as enough space for a 2,500 kg helicopter to land at the stem. There is a fitness area with Techno-gym equipment allowing guests to carry out fitness sessions while enjoying the panoramic view.

The engine room has a separate control room and two Caterpillar motors 3516 push Azteca at a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and a cruising speed of 15.

A feature release on the 72 metre Italian CRN motor yacht ‘Azteca’ as designed by Nuvolari & Lenard and lunched last year:

Motor yacht “Azteca” is the pleasure ship, hull number 124, of the CRN shipyard based in Ancona, a brand belonging to the Ferretti Group. This vessel, 72 metres in length, built on a naval platform of 13.50m, and made of steel and aluminium, is the biggest cruising yacht ever built in CRN history.

Yacht Azteca in the Mediteranean

Yacht Azteca, like all the other vessels realized by CRN, is a completely new “fully customized” project implemented through the collaboration of the shipyard engineering staff and the Nuvolari & Lenard company.

THE YACHT PROJECT Superyacht Azteca has a sophisticated and innovative design.  The slender shapes of the hull together with particularly modern and racy external lines, accentuated by the pronounced and sharp stem, characterize and distinguish the powerful realization of CRN within the scene of mega yachts this size.

Given the excellent balance between the design and the imposing volumes, the mega yacht acquires a particularly aggressive character, accentuated by the wide open spaces of the sun deck while breaking the schemes that expect big boats to have a less “sportive” soul.

Finally, like an inspired work of art, the realization of this ship is also based on the sharp tuning between the shipyard and the ship owner, whose personality was at the basis of the project choices.  A true homage to luxury and refinement, Azteca was developed so that it can offer guests the possibility to interweave a strong bond with the sea.

INNOVATION ON THE LUXURY YACHT AZTECA For this purpose, at the stern of the lower deck, a completely innovative area will be equipped as an authentic “beach club” of more than 100 sq m.

In fact the stern port can be transformed into a big beach close to the sea, equipped with an external shower and a sun deck which the guests can use as a solarium. At the back there is a wide indoor space dedicated to the total relaxation of the guests who can easily enjoy the proximity of the sea as they relax on the comfortable sofas or enjoy a tasty aperitif at the bar.

INTERIORS OF THE CRN MOTOR YACHT On the main deck of luxury yacht Azteca there are 2 suites which serves as accommodation for some of the 12 guests of the mega yacht and, obviously, the ship owner’s suite, an environment that the ship owner wanted to link directly to the sea through the door which can be folded at 90 degrees from within the cabin and that can be prepared as a “terrace” overlooking the sea.

The two bathrooms, one reserved for the ship owner and one for the owner’s wife are entirely covered with marble, embellished by the matching of two different prestigious essences at the base, to personalize and enrich the various environments:  inserts of brown Tiger’s eye for the ship owner’s bathroom and a slab of mother-of-pearl to soften the owner’s wife’s room.

CRN motor yacht 'Azteca'

A true cinema room, equipped with a 65 inch screen, a big wardrobe and a massage room complete the owner’s suite.

Below on the lower deck, there are 2 VIP cabins each of which has a third wall bed, and at the stern there are two more cabins for guests and the staff at their service.

Moreover, this deck holds 12 lodgings reserved for the crew who can enjoy a wide space which is organized so that it facilitates their living and work in the best way possible. In this area, very wide spaces have been reserved for storage: refrigerating cells, the laundry area and two big garages where there are Riva Shuttles, which are almost 10 metres long with a maximum speed of 45 knots, a service tender, which is almost 7 metres long, and four jet skis.

The upper deck is different given its wide spaces such as the “Special VIP” cabin that the ship owner can give to special guests, giving them the possibility to enjoy a large cabin with a wide view and complete discretion, and also the captain’s cabin, at the stem, in a cabin adjacent to the radio room and the steerage, equipped with the most modern navigation systems.

A big panoramic lift with crystal walls and decorated marble floor links the three upper decks.

The two big kitchens equipped with avant-garde instruments and machinery on the mega yacht are an expression of the ship owner’s great love for researched food.  A professional kitchen of about 50mq located on the main deck, and another one for pleasant moments of “tasting” on the upper deck where there is a White Carrara marble table.

On the upper deck itself there is a refrigerated cellar to store cold meats and cheeses and a wine cellar.

EXTERIORS OF YACHT AZTECA Worth noting is the wide unique sun deck on yacht AZTECA .  Extending over 33 metres of length and 10 metres of width, it is entirely dedicated to outdoor life:  big sofas, a bar area, a Spa Pool and many sun beds that can easily make space for the landing of a 2500kg helicopter, at the stem.

Two spaces were guests can socialize: a round dining table made of bronze on the upper deck and another one made of wengè wood with a Carrara marble top in the cockpit on the main deck.

Hi-fi systems and TV branded Bang & Olufsen.

Finally, on the sun deck, the ship owner has equipped an area as a fitness area with Techno-gym equipment, where the guests can carry out fitness sessions while enjoying the panoramic view.

TECHNOLOGY ON THE SUPERYACHT In the engine room, which has a separate control room, two Caterpillar motors 3516 push superyacht ‘Azteca’ at a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and a cruising speed of 15.

The Yacht Azteca profile - by CRN

The Yacht Azteca profile - by CRN

A masterpiece of elegance and sophistication, this mega yacht, among the longest realized in Italy, up to its final detail, is the final result of the ship owner’s precise vision of how to spend free time, characterized by close contact with the sea.  All of this is in line with the “custom” philosophy in which CRN believes firmly and that allows the shipyard of the Marche region to once again distinguish itself among the 500 participating exhibitors at the Monaco Yacht Show, with a very unique floating dwelling.

Iconic yachts: Paraiso and Azteca

To say that this pair of yachts, designed by my father for Emilio Azcárraga, caused a sensation at the time is probably an understatement. With hulls like a sheet of folded card, wrapped up to contain the main deck accommodation, Paraiso and Azteca looked as if they had sailed in from another galaxy. Just glance at the autumn 1986 issue of Feadship’s Pilot magazine, which features the group’s other launches of the same period – Enterprise IV , for example. All have elegant but utterly conventional lines. The two yachts caused raised blood pressure at De Vries and Van Lent but it was channelled into keen competition within the Feadship family, and I remember endless debates as to who had built the better boat – there was never a definitive answer, I recall.

The interiors were no less radical: cocoons of butter-soft, over-stuffed kid leather panels offset with hammered metal detailing and kilometres of thick polished Perspex handrails and details. Bird’s eye maple featured in abundance &ndash: natural on Azteca and stained dark tobacco on Paraiso . In an interesting cultural tweak, the Dutch upholsterers had to be persuaded by my father to leave the creases in the leather panelling and put aside their default wish to pull them tight for an immaculate, smooth finish. They just couldn’t accept that the quilted finish was what he was after and thought he was being slipshod.

Conventions were turned on their head. Television sets were housed in cantilevered leather-clad boxes rather than recessed into furniture units; bathroom mirrors were big discs of glass, clasped off-centre by a single bird’s eye maple support into which three naked light bulbs had been recessed for make-up lighting. Extra cooling in the interior spaces came from deckhead-mounted swivelling fans, each with a bird’s eye maple cowling. I think the Dutch found it a bit bewildering. There were so many handrails, door handles and custom fittings in polished, overscale Perspex that on one famous occasion a direction arrow on one of the Bannenberg drawings was accidentally turned into a large piece of Perspex by the ever-willing interior sub-contractor.

A couple of years ago, I went on board Paraiso at the Monaco Show with three of my team who all joined the company after my father died. It felt like a journey into the very DNA of his design vocabulary. The glass-roofed solarium on the top deck and the snug, forward-facing observation saloon were years ahead of their time – but probably much too scary for buyers looking for a sensible 44 metre motor yacht.

My father worked closely with George Nicholson on the projects, and a nice picture was taken of them standing together in front of a very wintry De Vries yard with Azteca rearing up through the fractured ice like a faceted iceberg. It was quite a neat metaphor for the impact the sisterships had on the yachting world at the time.

Frequently asked questions about truffle hunting in Tuscany, Italy

Here are some of the questions I am most often asked about truffles and how they are hunted in Tuscany and Italy. If you have any other questions, leave me a comment and I’ll update this post with the answer!

What truffles are?

Truffles are basically mushrooms that grow underground .

Are there different types of truffles?

There are over 100 species of truffles in nature, but only 9 are edible. The edible ones are divided into two categories: white truffles (2 species) and black truffles (7 species). Some species are more valuable than others.

black truffles in Tuscany, Italy

Where are truffles found?

Truffles usually grow at the base of some trees such as oaks, poplars and hazels, and require soil with specific conditions of humidity, slope, altitude and exposure to the sun. Truffle hunters know the secrets to finding these precious treasures.

What is the truffle season?

Each species of truffle has its season! Most truffles are harvested in autumn and winter, between Ocotber and January. But there are summer and spring varieties of truffles.

What is the best area in Tuscany to hunt for truffles?

The most famous town for this fragrant ingredient is certainly San Miniato, in the province of Pisa. The best quality truffles are found here, and there is a centuries-old tradition of truffle hunting. Truffles can also be found in other areas of Tuscany, such as Mugello.

Why are dogs used to search for truffles?

Because dogs have a very developed sense of smell, and are easily trained to find and report truffles to their human partner. In the past, pigs were also used for this purpose: pigs also have an excellent sense of smell, but it is not so easy to train them not to eat truffles once they have found them!

If you’ve done the galleries and all the Renaissance sightseeing you could imagine, why not opt for a day out in the countryside with the best truffle hunting tours from Florence ?

As one of the top three countries where ‘tartufo’ (the Italian name for truffles) grows naturally, the pricey subterranean fungus has been foraged here for hundreds of years, dating back to the Etruscan and Roman times.

These prized tubers have always had an air of superiority about them; savored for grand banquets. Today, they’re still highly sought-after and are one of the most expensive ingredients in the world, and are considered one of the gems of the culinary industry.

Join an expert truffle hunter and man’s best friend, adventuring through the woodlands in Tuscany, where varieties of white and black truffles grow. Forage for your own  tartufo , and then treat yourselves to an Italian lunch where truffles shine in every meal.

Add on wine tastings in Chianti’s rolling hills, or take home a new culinary skill … It’s undoubtedly one of the most unique things to do in Florence !

Is a truffle hunting tour worth it?

truffle hunting tour from Florence

Highly prized in the culinary world, ‘tartufo’ have grown naturally around parts of Tuscany since the Etruscans, and so you’re in a hotspot for a truffle hunting tour!

In fact, throughout the decades, Italia keeps clocking in the prize for the biggest white truffles to ever be unearthed!

If you’re a foodie, don’t think twice, but it’s also one of the most authentic things to do in Florence. You’ll notice a heavy truffle influence in and around Firenze, from truffle-infused olive oils to tapenades and spreads.

Get hands-on under the professional guidance of an expert “tartufaio” (Italian truffle hunter) and their truffle-hunting dog, gaining insider knowledge you wouldn’t elsewhere, not even from books or even documentaries.

From learning age-old foraging traditions passed down generations to kitchen secrets, you’re in for a serious treat! See firsthand where truffles typically grow, how to identify the different species from their exterior and clues on how to spot the underground growers.

Sample the fruits of your labor; some tours include a meal with your foraged treasures, or you can purchase your dug-out truffles instead.

What are the best truffle hunting tours from Florence?

From half-day ventures to a full-day excursion, there are truffle tours paired with wine tastings, others including a traditional lunch and expeditions slightly different from the rest.

Nestled beneath the soil of hazelnut, holm oak and pine trees, venture into the woods in either San Miniato or Montefiesole (tour dependent) for a half or full day of truffle-hunting excitement!

With an expert truffle hunter in charge and joined by his trusty truffle-sniffing companion, watch in amazement as your guide dog leads the path to the exact spot where truffles grow underground.

Then, the foraging action begins!

After the truffle-hunting is over (and your knowledge cup is overflowing with new information relative to the world of gourmet Tubers), head to a local farmhouse, winery or truffle shop and prepare for a feast!

Depending on your selected excursion, revel in a three-course meal, for example, where truffles are the star of the show. A typical menu comprises starters (like bruschetta laced with fresh truffles and butter), mains such as tagliolini al tartufo pasta and dessert — think classic Italian tiramisu!

Certain tours elevate the day with a gourmet lunch featuring all sorts of regional specialties and wine pairings.

Wine connoisseurs: Tuscany is one of the world’s top wine regions!

Corking the truffle hunting experience, opt for a day tour that includes time spent on wine tastings at the Tuscan wineries and exploring vineyards where rows of grape vines grow.

There are tours that choose to start the day at a local wine estate; others prefer to savor this part of the expedition after the truffle-hunting action.

Renowned for its roads with cordons of centuries-old wineries, cruise through the Chianti countryside, where processions of Cypress trees greet you and traditional age-old stone farmhouses have stood for decades.

As you meander around the wine farm, the winemakers educate guests on the wine-manufacturing process, and what goes into producing fine bottles of Super Tuscan and Chianti DOCG wines from grape to bottle.

(Certain tours are accompanied by an expert sommelier.)

Enjoy wine tastings inside ancient cellars, and most of these are matched with delicious food pairings. Specific truffle hunting tours set up lunch at these wine estates, featuring multi-courses of truffle-heavy dishes.

Useful to know: Many truffle-hunting adventures with wine tastings explore the parts around San Miniato close to Florence, while others journey a bit further through Val D’Orcia, and through to Montisi and Montalcino in the Siena province.

Truffle hunting with a cooking class

truffle hunting with cooking class from Florence

Combining the best of the Toscana countryside (food, wine and culture), up your culinary game with a foraging voyage coupled with a cooking class using truffles!

With professional, qualified chefs in charge of the kitchen, you’re in the best company for learning how to cook up a traditional Italian storm!

Set up in the Mugello Valley, the chefs await you while you take part in the truffle-hunting side of things with a truffle-hunting guide and dog.

Back at an organic farm, join the cooks and get ready for a short lesson on how to prepare truffles and use them in specific dishes — truffles are rich in both aroma and taste, and don’t necessarily pair with everything that mushrooms do. You’re shown how to clean, cut and cook the tubers or when to use them as shaved garnishings.

With theory aside, you’re guided through cooking a three-course meal featuring traditional Italian delights. Learn how to make three varieties of homemade pasta, knock up a main course (usually a meat-heavy dish) and a classic dessert from the area known as cantuccini (the name for biscotti in Tuscany).

P.S. Vegetarian cooking classes are available upon request.

Where is the best place to hunt for truffles in Italy?

truffle hunting tour in Italy

Did you know that Italy is one of the best (and oldest) places globally for finding truffles, and they grow in various parts of the country?

There are nine varieties of truffles that flourish in Italia, and the different kinds can be discovered in specific areas. There are loads of regions where truffles can be found, but certain destinations guarantee more of a chance of finding truffles during hunts.

Some of Italy’s most popular (and abundant) destinations to hunt for truffles include Piedmont , Tuscany , Abruzzo, Emilia Romagna , Umbria and Sicily. Each location is prized for a certain genesis of truffles, so you will find different types all over the country.

Honing in on Tuscany, popular spots for the best truffle hunting tours from Florence include San Miniato (one hour from Firenze, it’s part of the Pisa region), Crete Senesi, Valtiberina (technically part of Umbria, it borders Tuscany) and Mugello (right near Florence), but you can find them in Arezzo, Siena , Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca and Pistoia provinces too.

What time of year is best for truffle hunting?

best time to go truffle hunting

The different species grow at different times of year in various areas of Italy, so it all depends on where you’re visiting and in what season.

  • Moscato Truffle is harvested between January and March
  • Bianchetto o Marzuolo Truffle is harvested between January and April
  • Alba White Truffle (Tartufo Bianco) is harvested between September and December
  • Burgundy Truffle (Tartufo Uncinato) is harvested between October and December
  • Black Winter Truffle (Tartufo Nero Pregiato) is harvested between November and March
  • Black Summer Truffle (Tartufo Nero Estivo o Scorzone) is harvested between May and August

Typically, the darker truffles thrive in the colder months, and the white truffles prosper during autumn. From around March to April (spring), you can find the Bianchetto truffle. From May to August is Scorzone season, and September is famed for the highly-prized Tartufo Bianco.

Based in Florence (the capital city of Tuscany), you’ve hit the jackpot, and throughout the year in Tuscany, various kinds become readily available for harvesting.

Popular varieties to find here are White Truffle (October to December), Black Truffle (growing from November to March), Marzuolo Truffle (growing from January to April) and Summer Black Scorzone Truffle (from May to August, and in some areas of Tuscany between June and November).

What should I wear for a truffle hunting tour?

truffle hunting tour in Tuscany

A bulk of this countryside excursion happens inside woodlands, trekking damp grounds and rummaging around tree-laden pathways.

It’s best recommended to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, boots or trainers/sneakers, preferably no sliders or open sandals. With the chance of muddy terrain, keep your fancy clothes for another moment.

Long pants will save you later from mosquitos (especially in the hotter months) as well as scratches and itches from tall grass blades. A light rain jacket is also a must!

Depending on the season, dress warmly for the colder months, and if you’re here in summer, you might want to pack a light long sleeve (searching for truffles in a forest; the temperatures are naturally cooler thanks to shady trees). It’s still super fresh in the forest in the early mornings.

Can I customize my truffle hunting tour?

private truffle hunting tour from Florence

For the ultimate truffle-hunting experience exactly to your liking, customize your day with a private tour over small group endeavors.

Although you’re provided with a basic itinerary as a guideline, this comes with a bounty of extras, and you have more freedom to make amendments to your day.

For example, a private tour guarantees a hotel pick-up and drop-off, and if you need to reorganize your departure time, this usually isn’t a problem.

Travel comfortably in an air-conditioned vehicle, skipping large coach buses and getting to your destination faster.

If there’s a particular destination you’re keen on exploring en route, for example, a special winery, gourmet produce shop or tiny village, let your tour operator know beforehand and this can be inserted into your itinerary.

(Plus, private tours typically include all costs, such as wine tastings, lunch, etc.)

Travel tips

  • Make sure you wear weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Pack insect repellant — there’s nothing worse than returning with dozens of bites — as you will be walking through natural woodlands and forests.
  • Bring a small backpack with bottled water, sunblock, and a light rain jacket (although highly unlikely, even on odd occasions in summer, there’s a chance of slight rainfall).
  • It’s not always a guarantee that you will find truffles (although there’s a 99% chance of it), so bear this in mind.
  • Most truffle hunting tours don’t include taking home the truffles you forage. Remember, these are a super expensive delicacy.
  • Certain tours allow you to purchase the truffles for an additional cost if you like.
  • A moderate fitness level is required for the hunting part, walking between one to two hours as you search for tartufo .
  • Unless there are thunderstorms, the truffle hunting still happens even if it’s raining.

Truffle & Chianti small-group tour in a nutshell

This is a wine and food experience to discover the fascinating world of truffle.  Tuscany produces five different species of truffles so every month of the year we can hunt truffles.  This truffle tour provides an exclusive opportunity to go hunting for this flavorsome tuber in the footsteps of professional truffle hunters and their specially trained dogs of the super cute, highly skilled Lagotto Romagnolo breed.

You will take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience  and search for truffles with a truffle-hunting dog through the woods of Tuscany. Follow the dog hurriedly through the forest as he sniffs about and experience the surge of excitement as he starts digging for this edible treasure (white truffles go for nearly $15,000 per kg). Once it is found, you will be treated to a delightful meal that incorporates the truffle that you just discovered!

After lunch, make your way through the scenic Tuscan landscape  into the region of Chianti. Here you will have the opportunity to experience what is arguably Italy's most renowned wine, Chianti. Your guide will teach you everything you need to know about the process of winemaking and the techniques involved in attaining a better appreciation of the wine through the tasting.

While  Tuscany  is often associated with exceptional wines, it is especially renowned for its  truffles .It may come as a surprise to some that  San Miniato , a small town in Tuscany, supplies nearly 80% of the  world's precious white truffles .

White truffles founding in a wood around San Miniato

My husband and I booked this experience as part of our honeymoon and it was 100% worth it! We're from the US and have been road tripping down Italy and this was definitely a huge highlight of our trip. Hillary is AMAZING! She's so personable and hilarious, and gave us invaluable tips for the rest of our trip. She is also incredibly knowledgeable about wines, and was able to recommend things we had never thought to try before. We learned a ton, and had so much fun! It was also great to see what a good relationship she has with everyone we met on our trip from Franchesca to the waiters. The food we received with lunch was delicious, and we couldn't leave without purchasing truffle items to take home. We both recommend this for anyone interested in truffles. It was a day of great vibes, great food, and great laughs.

Hilary was our guide and she was so personable, entertaining, and knowledgeable! She knew some people in our group were celebrating their honeymoon (including us) and went above and beyond to make it special! I highly recommend this experience, it was so great!

We were picked up by Hilary on time, and she gave us a brief history of Italy and why all the foods are different everywhere one travel in Italy! On the way out to meet Francesca and Choco (our truffle hunting guides), Hilary, who is a sommelier, gave us background on the different varieties of truffles and the characteristics of the Chianti Classico. Francesca’s family home is beautiful, and we spent time meeting Choco and doing some searching for truffles. Truffles found, we went back and had a lovely meal with truffles in every course. In the afternoon, we went to a Chianti wine estate and tasted differing ages of Chianti and a Supertuscan. Hilary showed us how to taste the wines and experience their best qualities. The wines were very good, and some were purchased! On the way back to Florence, Hilary gave us tips on the San Giovanni festival the next day in Florence and where to get some excellent gelato - very good gelato! It was a wonderful day, and I would highly recommend this trip.

This was an excellent tour. Hilary is an AMAZING guide, very personable, and such a great source of information. She is very knowledgeable about Italian history, wine, and truffles and is full of lots of fun facts. I learned tons during the tour and the conversation was fun and flowing. The truffle hunt was a fun adventure. Francesca has been truffle hunting since she was 6 years old. She explains a lot as you go along and pointed out other interesting things on the walk such as fossils and poisonous mushrooms. Choco is very friendly and well-trained and sniffed out some great truffles for us to try. Would recommend wearing some pants that can withstand getting snagged here and there on some prickly plants/bushes as you're really getting in the woods to follow Choco and find the truffles. The villa for lunch is a gorgeous setting. Francesca and her mother were very welcoming. The truffle-based lunch with wine was delicious. We had truffle bruschetta, fried egg with truffle, truffle pasta, and sweet wine with cookies for dessert. Wine tasting had a great selection of wines and meats for pairing. It was very informative and in a beautiful setting. Hilary taught me a lot about how to pick and order good wines as well as tips and tricks for tastings. Would recommend this tour to anyone who loves truffles, wine, and beautiful scenery!

5 things to know about North Palm Beach mega-yacht owner, billionaire Michael Bozzuto

azteca yacht owner

Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is fighting for the right to moor his 164-foot mega-yacht behind a waterfront house he owns at 932 Shore Dr. in North Palm Beach.

But the Village of North Palm Beach has told Bozzuto he doesn't have this right.

It's the latest example of how big money landing in Florida is running up against Old Florida residents who want their communities to stay low-key.

After years of disputes over the yacht, Bozzuto recently filed a lawsuit against the municipality, asking a judge to agree that he has the right to the use of his house and his dock.

Who is Michael Bozzuto, and why is he suing the Village of North Palm Beach?

Here are five things to know:

1. Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is a longtime North Palm Beach resident

Bozzuto is the billionaire owner of a privately held, family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut called Bozzuto's Inc. The company is a distributor of food and household products to retailers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bozzuto's was founded by Michael's late father, Adam.

Even though Bozzuto's Inc. is based in Connecticut, Bozzuto has lived in the Village of North Palm Beach, population 13,000, for 20 years.

2. Besides owning a yacht, what are Michael Bozzuto's hobbies?

In addition to being a businessman, Bozzuto is an investor and philanthropist. He is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics.

He is also an under-the-radar resident who likes to collect houses and yachts, said his lawyer, former Florida Bar president Gregory Coleman.

Bozzuto bought the motor yacht, Honey, about 10 years ago for an undisclosed sum. The Westport mega-yacht was built in 2007 and is the largest of several yachts Bozzuto owns.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

Bozzuto also owns four houses in the Village of North Palm Beach. This includes the house at 932 Shore Dr., where he wants to dock Honey. In 2014, Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house, which was built in 1961, according to Palm Beach County property records.

The property is on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Honey.

Bozzuto's residence is in another part of North Palm Beach, on Harbour Isles Court.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

3. Michael Bozzuto's net worth isn't known but billionaire owns property outside of North Palm Beach, too

Bozzuto made waves recently when in January he paid $31.1 million for a waterfront house in nearby Palm Beach Shores.

The Singer Island house with two docks stretches into the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet. The three-lot parcel on 1.5 acres has about 200 feet of waterfront.

The property was bought from an owner whose family had owned it for decades. It's unclear if Bozzuto will make any changes to the property.

In a brief interview in February, Bozzuto said: “It’s a house, and it will probably be a house."

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

4. Why can't Bozzuto park his yacht behind his North Palm Beach house?

The Village of North Palm Beach rules say that a private dock or pier can only be used by the occupant of the house. But the village doesn't define the word "occupant."

Bozzuto's lawsuit said while the village has discussed whether to define an occupant as a resident, it never has done so.

Hundreds of other property owners dock a boat behind their North Palm Beach house but do not live there year-round.

Therefore Bozzuto said he's being singled out because neighbors just don't like his boat's big size. This selective enforcement is wrong, his lawsuit said.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

5. What does North Palm Beach think about the lawsuit?

Unfortunately, this is a mystery until the village responds to Bozzuto's lawsuit in public court records.

The village's longtime lawyer, Lenard Rubin, who knows the municipality's history with boats and houses, did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the village's manager, Chuck Huff.
