Search held for missing kayaker on Detroit River by US Coast Guard
FOX 2 (WJBK) - The US Coast Guard spent Sunday searching for a missing 63-year-old man on the Detroit River. After resuming the search at first light Monday, by 11 a.m. a representative from the Coast Guard said it had been called off and there were no plans to resume it.
James Kuntz was on the water in his red kayak when he was reported missing Sunday. He was seen Friday at the Detroit Yacht Club wearing a Hawaiian shirt.
On Sunday a US Coast Guard Sector Detroit issued an urgent marine information broadcast. A Coast Guard station Belle Isle small boat and a helicopter crew were used in the search.
A public Facebook post being shared by DYC members said that Kuntz was last seen Saturday morning.
"His truck was left in the parking lot, keys and wallet on his boat," the post says. "He is an avid Kayaker and his kayak is missing. We’ve contacted the police, coast guard and called every hospital. He is nowhere to be found."

At about 3:10 p.m. Friday, May 10, Marlborough police responded to a caller reporting a deceased male floating in the river near the Marlboro Yacht Club on Dock Road, Marlborough Police Chief Gerald Cocozza said in an email.
The body was recovered with assistance from the Marlboro and New Hamburg fire departments and was turned over to the Ulster County Medical Examiner’s office for further investigation. State police at Rhinebeck also assisted, Cocozza said.
State police Trooper A.J. Hicks said in an email that, “remains were found, but the (medical examiner) has not completed (his) report so we do not have a 100% ID as of yet.”
All agencies cleared the scene at 5:17 p.m.
The Marlboro Yacht Club spokesperson, who asked not to be identified, said the person is thought to have jumped from a nearby bridge about two weeks ago. The spokesperson declined to provide additional information but said the club sends its condolences to family members.
