Sicily

Sicily Yacht Charters

Considered to be one of the most alluring yacht charter destinations in the Mediterranean, Sicily and the surrounding Aeolian Islands exude an endearing charm. Here, you’ll find a juxtaposition of culture and natural history. From the active volcanos like Etna or Stromboli, to the quaint fishing villages rich in history, in every port of call a new experience awaits.

Sicily boasts a cultural melting pot of villages, cities and upscale ports. Palermo, the bustling capital city, offers visitors a chance to explore the island’s unique history – the Palermo Cathedral is a must-see – and indulge in the island’s amazing cuisine and wine. Outposts like Cefalu, a quaint fishing village, and historic Syracuse are favorite yachting destinations as well, that offer excellent food, beaches, and cultural sights to explore, while Catania sits below Mt. Etna and provides access to the active volcano.

Many Sicily yacht charters also choose to explore the Aeolian Islands, a seven-island UNESCO-protected archipelago. Located off Sicily’s north coast, the Aeolian Islands are a beautiful paradise, home to stunning natural sights and amazing outdoor experiences including diving, kayaking, and trekking.

Sicily Yachting: When to Go

Summer is prime yachting season in Sicily, and like most of the Mediterranean, July and August are peak months for charters. During peak season, visitors are welcomed by amazing weather – temperatures hover in the 80s with the sun every day – and ideal yachting conditions, e.g. refreshing breezes of 5- to 20-knots.

Many prefer the quieter shoulder months of June and September of yacht charters. In June and September, the weather remains mild – in the 70s – and the beaches and ports are less crowded. During the summer season, water temperatures are inviting, remaining in the upper-70s to low-80s and providing ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling, or water sports.

Area Guide: Sicily Charter Destinations

Map of Sicily

During your next yacht charter stop in Sicily, explore the sites and areas listed below to experience the best the island has to offer. Some must-visit destinations on a Sicily yacht charter include:

Palermo While Palermo is regarded more for its crowds and chaos than its serene Sicilian lifestyle, its baroque palazzos, lively market streets, family-oriented feel, and glimmering Byzantine churches make it a place worth visiting. Perfect for yachters and foot travelers alike, Palermo is well-positioned for local excursions to Mondello beach, the island of Ustica, Corleone and Monreale.

Milazzo Milazzo is a town on the northern coast of Sicily, visible from afar due to an enormous citadel within its borders. Its “Borgo Antico,” or “Old Town,” and secluded, rocky coves paint a picture of historic and beautiful Sicily. One of the first Norman buildings on Sicily, the castle, along with the Sanctuary of St. Francesco from Paola, are the highlights of Milazzo.

Syracuse Once the largest city in the ancient world, today, Syracuse is a picture of Sicily’s timeless beauty. Dotted with fragrant citrus orchards, hidden Ancient Greek ruins, streets lined with cafes, and Baroque piazzas, this Medieval town still embraces life as it was 3,000 years prior. The city boasts a Greek and Roman amphitheater, the Tomb of Archimede, and the Temple of Zeus.

Catania Mount Etna looms over Sicily’s second-largest city, Catania, which makes this eastern city a must-visit for those wanting a closer look at the famous volcano. In Catania, visitors will find a smorgasbord of history and culture. The world-famous Cathedral of Catania is a sight to behold, and the nearby bustling fish market is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Cefalu Just 40 miles from Palermo, the beachside resort town of Cefalu offers a more relaxed vibe. Known for its stunning promenade lined with Old World inns and apartments, the town is the perfect shoreside escape when cruising around Sicily. Plan to hike La Rocca, a cliff that overlooks the town, and the town’s double-towered duomo is a must-see.

Aeolian Islands

Lipari As the most accessible of the Aeolian Islands, Lipari, is the meeting point of city life and serenity. The destination’s focal point, Lipari Town, encompasses a whimsical, pastel-colored seafront while its countryside – a rugged, Mediterranean landscape – is filled with verdant shrubbery, calm highlands, jagged cliffs, and celestial blue waters.

Stromboli A volcano-turned-island, Stromboli is just the tip of a large underwater volcano that sits on the seafloor 1476 meters below. As captivating as it is unique, Stromboli boasts a slow, relaxed lifestyle, romantic vibes, famous black-sand beaches, and a reputation as being the summer favorite of Dolce and Gabbana, who have a house there.

Salina With its lush, green landscape, thick woodland forests, plentiful vineyards, and colorful wildflowers and gorse bushes, Salina is the second-largest of the Aeolian Islands. Shaped by two extinct volcanoes, Monte dei Porri and Monte Fossa delle Felci, Salina boasts grandiose coastal cliffs, volcanic soil, and natural, freshwater springs.

Panarea The most fashionable of the Aeolian Islands, the small island of Panarea, which is only active during the summer, attracts international jet-setters and Italian fashionistas looking for a taste of “la dolce vita.” From May to October, it is not uncommon for Panarea’s harbors to be filled with luxury yachts, nor its footpath-only streets to be covered with affluent travelers.

Why Charter a Yacht in Sicily

Sicily is one of Europe’s – and the world’s – favorite yachting destinations. That’s due in part to the island’s incredible weather and stunning scenery. Yet, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands offer plenty to do and explore – from Old World vineyards to Norman and Roman theaters and cathedrals. The bottom line, a yacht charter in Sicily is a luxury vacation you won’t soon forget.

Lipari Sicily

Stunningly Beautiful Beaches Sicily offers an eclectic mix of postcard-worthy beaches. From sandy outposts to dramatic, rocky shorelines, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands are home to some of Europe’s best beaches. Near Palermo, the coastal towns of Cefalu and Mondello boast sprawling golden-sand beaches, while San Vito Lo Capo is known for its dramatic cliffs. Isola Bella, a nature reserve near Taormina, is another can’t-miss beach, known for its sparkling deep-blue lagoons.

Amazing, Locally-Sourced Food & Wine Sicilian cuisine is as unique as its history and culture, as it fuses Arab, Greek, Italian, and Spanish flavors. The result are rich, vibrant dishes that awaken the palate, and feature locally sourced citrus fruits, olives, artichokes, seafood, cheeses and figs. You’ll also find numerous Sicilian vintages that are made from native grapes, including Grillo, Zibibbio, and Nero d’Avola. Tenuta Tascante, a vineyard located on the slopes of Etna, is a must-visit.

World-Heritages Sites and Well-Preserved History All across Sicily and the Aeolians, you’ll find historic sites dating back thousands of years. The Greek Theater near Taormina, which sits on a cliff overlooking the sea, is a stunning site, with Mount Etna serving as a backdrop. Syracuse is another perfect destination for history buffs. Here, you’ll find sites like the Temple of Apollo and the Neapolis Archaeological Park. No matter where you go, you’re bound to find Roman, Greek, and Norman historical sites.

Things to Do and See on a Sicily Yacht Charter

  • Tour the Greek Theatre in Taormina and snap photos of the clouds over Mount Etna.
  • Sample cannoli, the world-famous Sicilian dessert at kiosks, and street-side vendors in Catania.
  • Hike La Rocca in Cefalu and enjoy the splendid views of the aquamarine harbor and town below.
  • Take a 4×4 tour of Mount Etna and see the crater at the summit of the world-famous volcano.
  • Explore the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the island’s most important archaeological site, which is home to the majestic Temple of Concord.
  • Take a trekking tour of Stromboli, the active volcano in the Aeolians, that’s known for its continuous stream of lava.
  • Visit Quattrocchi overlook in Lipari for the best coastal views in the region.

Sicily Yacht Charter Boat Vacations

The remarkable landscape of volcanic Sicily draws in sightseers every year, yet the best way to see all of the island's natural beauty is via a private Sicily yacht charter where you are free to explore at your own pace. Arguably the quintessential Mediterranean holiday experience, Sicily is scattered with UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Greek and Roman origin and the island's outstanding natural beauty is the perfect place to anchor for an alfresco meal at sunset followed by a night of revelry aboard your luxury yacht.

On a crewed yacht charter vacation you will discover that Sicily has a remarkably varied landscape, with a mountainous interior, hills and plateaus, and a wildly beautiful coastline of rocky promontories, sheer cliffs, fine sand beaches, tiny coves and clear waters. Off shore are groups of smaller islands, some of volcanic origin; Stromboli, off the northern coast, has an active volcano. Breathtaking vistas abound: the semi-tropical landscape of lemon groves and pine forests; miles of sparkling sea shore dotted by small fishing villages; and towering mountains framed by a brilliant blue sky.

Divers flock to the region for its impressive sites suited to beginners through to advanced, where corals and gorgonias attract parrotfish, nudibranches, lionfish and occasionally turtles.

The active volcanoes of Etna and Stromboli are a unique draw for tourists and vineyards and orchards cover the fertile lower slopes for a gastronomic delight at the end of your tour.

Guests looking to fit in some shopping will have a myriad of luxury brands to choose from in such locations as Palermo and Catania, while the local shops and art galleries have an eclectic selection to personalise your wardrobe or home with a memorable souvenir your trip.

With its mild climate and volcanic enriched soil, Sicily is an important agricultural center, growing vegetables and citrus fruit, including the famous blood oranges, and producing olive oil and wine. Luxuriant gardens with exotic plants grace the major cities, including Palermo , the capital.

Sicilian History

On your Sicily crewed yacht charter vacation you will find that nature and history have combined to give Sicily its most striking feature: impressive monuments of the past set against backgrounds of astonishing natural beauty. You can climb the hill to the 3rd century BC Greek amphitheater at Taormina and experience a setting where nature enhances art: on one side stretches the dramatic, jagged coastline of the azure blue Ionian Sea, on the other, snow capped Mt. Etna.

The 12th century cathedral at Monreale, a masterpiece of Norman architecture famous for its dazzling mosaics, commands unsurpassed views down the Conca d’Oro Valley , with Palermo and its bay visible in the distance. With its location in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea , Sicily became a bridge between the civilizations of the East and West. Peoples from the southern Mediterranean, including the Phoenicians, were the earliest settlers, but the island’s growth, prosperity and cultural development began with Greek colonization in the 8th century BC. The powerful city-states of Syracuse, Catania, Selinute and Agrigento competed with each other to construct the most spectacular temples. The hauntingly beautiful Valley of the Temples , built parallel to the sea at Agrigento , are some of the best preserved outside of Greece .

The Romans arrived in the 2nd century BC, followed by the Arabs, Normans, French, Spanish and finally the Bourbons. Churches, temples, gardens, palaces and theaters from these civilizations are scattered throughout the island. However, it was during the Arab domination in the 9th and 10th centuries when Sicily’s influence in trade and culture expanded, while the Norman occupation in the 11th and 12th centuries was a major artistic influence, leaving behind exquisite churches and palaces of Arab-Byzantine style.

Eclipse near Stromboli Volcano, Sicily - Mark OConnell

On your Sicilian crewed yacht charter vacation cuisine is an adventure in history. Its cooking speaks of its complicated history of invasions and occupations as well as of the fresh flavors of the land and the bounty of the sea. There is cuscus (couscous) from Trapani , an Arab legacy, served with a fish stew. Pasta con le sarde, with fresh anchovies, is traditional. Bottarga, tuna roe that has been salted and pressed, tops pasta in the renowned spaghetti alla siracusana. Sfinciuni di San Vito, a stuffed focaccia, is not to be missed, nor is caponata, a sensuous dish of eggplant, celery and onions that are fried separately and cooked briefly in a sweet and sour sauce that includes tomatoes, raisins, pine nuts, vinegar, and a pinch of sugar. Farsumagru, a meat roll filled with cheese, sausage and boiled eggs is one of the island’s classic meat dishes, and piscispada alla ghiotta, an exuberant swordfish preparation, its most famous fish dish. Cassata, a sponge cake with ricotta, chocolate, candied fruits and pistachios, is the most beloved Sicilian dessert; ricotta-stuffed cannoli are known throughout the world. Cubbaita, a nougat with honey, almonds, and sesame seeds, speaks of Arab influence. Some of Italy’s best ice cream is made in Sicily, and little can rival the sweetness of its fruit. Sicily produces a number of great wines, most of them sweet: Marsala, Malvasia delle Lipari, and Moscato. Excellent table wines are made on the Regaleali estate; other outstanding ones are Etna, Alcamo, Corvo, Faro, and Ombra.

Sicily Yacht Charter Enquiry

Dear Martha, Thank you so much for helping to arrange our trip on Libertus. Having previously sailed on a classic Benetti we were keen to repeat the experience and the restrained elegance of these boats is hard to beat. We were thrilled to see that Libertus retains all the features of these beautiful vessels but has been upgraded to a superb level of luxuriousness. It is well equipped both in terms of facilities and first rate toys. The Crew under Captain Pablo De La Riera were completely excellent. Safety was a priority and Pablo worked with us from well before arrival to tailor an itinerary to suit us. He was also more than willing to adapt the plan on arrival. The service from all of the Crew was friendly and attentive and it was a complete pleasure to spend time with these attractive and interesting young people. The Chef, Maxime, delivers cuisine of such a high standard and variety that you quickly lose the will to dine on shore at all. We could not recommend this boat and team more highly and would happily charter Libertus again. Once again, thank you. We had the holiday of a lifetime on M/Y Libertus / Aeolian Islands, Sicily / June.

Sicily boat rentals

Sailing vacations in Sicily offer great opportunities for  history lovers. While sailing the warm Mediterranean Sea, stops at  secluded moorings offer the chance to enjoy Greek, Roman and Arab  influenced architecture, cuisine and culture. Since ancient times, the  different civilizations that invaded this island considered it their  duty to leave a mark of their legacy. Wise Sicilians, on the other hand,  did everything possible to preserve their own heritage. The influence  of these various cultures creates an eclectic and interesting backdrop  for a charter around the waters of Sicily.

Sicily bareboat yacht charters can start from 5 different bases including Palermo, Marsala, Portorosa, Milazzo and Tripani.

The Egadi Islands can be easily reached from both Palermo and Tripani  yacht charter bases. Visiting these islands can add to your Sicilian  adventure with opportunities to enjoy swimming and snorkeling.

Chartering a boat from the Portorosa base you can easily sail to the  Lipari Islands, located just a few miles from Milazzo. Explore Volcano  and Salina islands, well known for their unique natural beauty.

Sailing conditions

Sailing conditions

A Sicily sailboat charter is recommended for more experienced  sailors. This area can offer gentle cruising within sight of the coast  between the closest Egadi (Aegadian) Islands, as well as challenging  open-water passages to the Lipari Islands, Malta or Tunis. The average  summer temperatures in Sicily are 77 to 89 F (25 to 32 C), with steady  northwesterly winds from 8 to 12 knots (8 to 14 mph).

Yacht Charter Sicily

A serene pebbled beach in Sicily with crystal-clear waters, accessible via a luxury yacht charter with N&J.

From volcanoes to Greek temples and 18th-century Baroque architecture, a Sicily yacht charter offers a true feast for the senses.

The Italian island of Sicily, located just off the ‘toe’ of Italy’s boot, boasts stunning natural beauty and a host of exclusive offerings coupled with a distinctly different identity from mainland Italy. A luxury yacht charter in Sicily offers a superb addition to your Western Mediterranean yacht charter itinerary and can easily be incorporated with an island-hopping adventure in the Aeolian Islands. The island of Sicily is home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mount Etna, which — towering above the shimmering Mediterranea Sea at 3,350 meters — is also the tallest volcano in Europe. It is a must-add yacht charter destination to your itinerary if you’re a nature lover, adventure seeker, or ocean dreamer.

All around Sicily, you will discover quiet anchorages, beautifully scenic bays and little fishing villages painted in pretty pastel colors.  Your Sicilian charter is not complete without passing through the Aeolian Islands . Lying off Sicily’s northeastern coast, this varied cluster of islands has a fascinating topography.  Here you can take a dip in volcanic hot springs and mud baths, sip sweet Malvasia wine on the island of Salina and explore the beautiful scenery of Lipari.

A Feast for the Senses: The Sicilian Delicious Cuisine

Sicily is perhaps most famous for its food, which is heavily influenced by the island’s past. It has been conquered by the Phoenicians of North Africa, the Islamic Moors, Greeks, Romans, Normans and Spanish over the years.  The influences of Greek , Arabic, French and Catalan cuisine make Sicily’s culinary offering decidedly different from the cuisine of mainland Italy. Expect fresh fish, simple pasta, Mediterranean vegetables, and local markets fit to burst with olive stalls, cheeses, oils, raisins, saffron and pistachios. The yacht’s chef will make local provisions to ensure these local flavors are incorporated into your meals aboard. Still, we recommend you disembark to eat at least one meal ashore for an authentic taste of Sicily.

Taormina: A Cliffside Gem

We also recommend visiting the city of  Taormina on Sicily’s coast. Clinging to the cliff edge, have your phones and cameras ready to snap images of the picturesque terraces that cascade down the hillside to the water. With views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, Taormina’s ancient Greco-Roman theater, the Teatro Antico di Taormina, is an impressive sight and is still in use today.  While there, be sure to visit Isola Bella. This little nature reserve is connected to Taormina’s beach by just a narrow stretch of sand. Lastly, stop at Bam Bar while in town to beat the heat by sampling granita, a Sicilian frozen delight.

Syracuse: A Historical Tapestry

A great migration of Greeks came to the islands in 750 B.C., establishing the stunning city of Syracuse. Home of the renowned mathematician, philosopher and brilliant mind of Archimedes, Syracuse is brimming with history. If you’re interested, your charter broker can arrange a tour of the archeological sites ashore with many well-preserved Greek and ancient Roman ruins. And your visit to Syracuse during a Sicily yacht charter wouldn’t be complete without exploring the Necropolis of Pantalica, extensive rock-cut tombs of antiquity.

San Vito Lo Capo: A Beachside Paradise

During your Sicilian yacht charter, be sure to have the yacht anchor off San Vito Lo Capo and have the crew tender you in with all of the yacht’s beach kit. The golden sands of San Vito Lo Capo adjacent to the magnificent mountains looming further inland create a stunning scene out of a postcard.

The largest island on the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Southern Italy, Sicily has been a major hub for human and trade movements for at least the last 10,000 years.

Ruled by a number of different empires from the Phoenicians to the Romans and even Arabs and Normans before entering the United Kingdom of Italy in the 1800s, the Mediterranean island of Sicily has a very wide and deep cultural heritage that marks the island nation today.

Now an autonomous region of Italy, the island and its smaller neighbours now have a complex economy of natural gas, sulphur, trade, fisheries and agriculture. Yes, tourists enjoy the sandy beaches but there is so much more to enjoy than that!

For those on a charter holiday, you will find Sicily has a depth and breadth of pleasures to enjoy. This is no small Greek island that utterly depends on the tourist dollar - you are visiting a complex and independent nation that you will come to love and enjoy that will function whether you pay into the economy or not. Come and taste it - it is not a caricature for tourists but a living, breathing culture with a heartbeat of its own!

Hiring A Yacht In Sicily

A Sicily yacht charter is simple to arrange. You don't even need sailing qualifications if you take on a skippered yacht charter for a more relaxed sailing holiday.

On booking the charter you will need to pay a 50% deposit upfront for the week or two you wish to use the boat. On arrival, you present your sailing qualifications (if on a bareboat yacht charter) and a damage deposit on the credit card or present specially bought yacht charter insurance.

Upon inspecting the vessel you can then go on your way. If on a skippered yacht charter you will be given guidance and make your decisions as to where you want to go - with a bareboat yacht charter you make your own mind up.

You will often have a choice between anchorages and marinas every night. You can enjoy the great natural heritage of the Sicilian coastline and volcanic islands or human heritage or both. Sicilian cuisine is among the best on the Mediterranean, and some of the nightspots are up there among the very best too. You can explore the religious and cultural history of the island. On a Sicilian yacht charter it really is down to what floats your boat!

Getting to Sicily

There are direct flights from several airports in the UK. Let's look at the two main Sicilian airports:

Palermo : For sailing on the north and west of the island. Palermo is served by flights from several airports in the UK, with many flights only in the summer season.

Catania : Catania is on the east coast of Sicily and is served with several daily direct flights from Northern Europe and the UK.

Ferries: Palermo and Catania are also the only major ferry ports from mainland Italy. Depending on where you fly into on mainland Italy, you can take a ferry from Genoa, Civitavecchia, Naples, Salerno and Tunis to the three main ferry ports on Sicily.

Best Areas To Charter

When sailing Sicily, there are two main areas you're likely to explore - the volcanic Aeolian archipelago (Stromboli, Vulcano, Filicudi and more) and the Egadi islands off the west coast. Charters in the Aeolian/Lipari islands usually start from Portorosa, while the main hubs for Egadian charters are Marsala and Trapani.

Aeolian Island Hopping

As we indicated above, Sicily isn't just one island but several. The seven volcanic Aeolian Islands are one such archipelago. A volcanic island group off the north coast of Sicily, they are a UNESCO World Heritage site and on arrival, you will soon appreciate why, with their black sand beaches and rugged appeal. Bring your walking boots as you can climb extinct (and even live) volcanoes. Bask on a hot black sand beach. Enjoy the local food washed down with Malvasia wine of the islands. Pick lemons bigger than your fist, perhaps to garnish a fish caught from the rich seas...

Aegadian Islands

The three Egadi Islands (also know as the Aegadian Islands) have been the centre of human history at times, with the Romans agreeing on a pact with the Carthaginians and taking Sicily after the Punic wars. The islands had seen humanity long before - just look at the pre-historic cave paintings depicting tuna fishing and even dancing. Off the west coast of Sicily, the Aegadian islands are a world away from the hustle and bustle of Palermo, the city you may have likely passed through at the beginning of your yacht charter. The Egadi island chain of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo all have their charms but all share the commonality of being so laid back you'll hardly feel a pulse. That's no bad thing in this high paced world! As with the Aeolian Islands, bring your walking boots to explore inland.

Unlike many other Sicilian ports, Portorosa is an extremely modern development, and the primary yacht rental hub for the Aeolian volcanic archipelago. It has a 700 berth marina - the largest in Sicily - so you will likely start and finish your sailing holiday there. No ancient palazzos or piazzas here - this was built entirely in the 20th and 21st Centuries. Modern hotels, spas and restaurants are the name of the game. Perhaps take a last gulp of modern life before you dive into the ancient wonders of old Sicily as you sail onward!

Capo d'Orlando

Capo dOrlando was first inhabited during the Trojan Wars, over 3,000 years ago. There are remnants of the different civilisations that have swept through ever since from castles to religious buildings and archaeological museums. At the base of the Nebrodi mountains on the north coast of Sicily it is still considered an important fishing village and as ever with this island nation is what it is for what it is - not for you the tourist. Explore, taste and drink in what you see - and remember it for years to come!

For a city to be considered one of the most romantic in Italy, Trapani is up there among the most romantic in the world! Enjoy sunset at dinner on the beachfront with your favourite other. The beach should just be the way you complete your day in the town - explore its narrow streets with their monuments and palaces. Wonder at the lush countryside and windmills nearby. Feel overwhelmed with romance as you go about this jaw droopingly beautiful town. Chartering from Trapani, you can also do a coastal sail, visiting San Vito Lo Capo, and even going around to Mount Etna itself.

Castellammare del Golfo

This historic fishing town between Palermo and Trapani on the NW coast of Sicily is one of the island's major yacht charter hubs. You will be able to eat well and drown in the culture of Castellammare del Golfo before you head off on your sailing holiday to the north of Sicily. Palermo airport/ferry port are the main island entry points for this town.

Types Of Yachts To Hire

There are three broad types of charter - bareboat charter, flotilla charters, and skippered yacht charter. Where it comes to chartering a boat you can hire a motorboat, a monohull sailing yacht, catamaran , Superyacht or luxury yacht charter and RIBs or day boats. Each has their benefits.

Motor yacht

Coming in all shapes and sizes from 7 metres to 70+ metres, motorboats are as different as their uses. A seven-metre RIB will be a great day boat and can be hired for as little as €110 a day for fishing trips or just blasting about the bay. The 15 metres plus size of the motor yacht will have cabins and often en suite heads and cost upwards of €400 a day.

Starting at as 'little' as €10,000 a day a superyacht will come with skipper and crew as part of the package. On the crewed motor yacht or sailboat you will be treated like kings and queens on your personal mini-cruise-ship that will often come with tenders and toys such as jet skis and even sailing yachts!

Luxury Yacht Charter

Coming with or without skipper and/or crew, a luxury yacht charter will cost upwards of €700 a day and will come fully fitted out with all the modern conveniences and comforts of the very best sailing craft afloat. Expect en suite heads and comfortable staterooms but also a lot of fun under sail!

Starting at €450 a day, catamarans are luxury yachts that offer lots of space, a fair lick of speed on a reach and a shallow draft for mooring close into shore. They have twin engines in the hulls so while large they are incredibly manoeuvrable when in marinas and so forth.

Monohull Sailing Yacht

Ranging in size from 10 metres up to 20 or so, monohull sailboat form the backbone of the Sicily yacht charter industry. Very good to windward, you will find yourself chewing up the miles at all points of sail without relying on the engines. Costing as little as €120 a day you will enjoy comfort and fun for a good budget price.

Skippered Yacht charter or Bareboat?

Where it comes to a Sicilian yacht charter you have two choices - bareboat hire or skippered yacht charter. Both have their own advantages.

Skippered charter

No sailing qualifications or not confident enough to bareboat charter yourself? That's no problem when it comes to yacht charter - you can take on a skipper for the week or two touring Sicilian waters! With a skippered yacht charter you have someone aboard who knows the ropes and the best places to visit on your sailing holiday. They will know the best spots for what you want, be it hideaway restaurants or the best wine on the island! Costing as little as €100 a day (depending on the size and type of vessel) you will get the very best from your yacht charter holiday with one aboard. Don't forget the tip at the end of the week!

Bareboat yacht charter

A competent sailor? Have the qualifications required? Dreaming all year of casting off and exploring the Sicilian coastline and islands with just you and your friends? A bareboat yacht charter is just the thing for you. This is cheaper than a skippered yacht charter but you also get the privacy of being in your chosen group without a stranger in your midst. You get to choose your own adventure and go at your own pace - not a bad thing for a holiday to recharge your batteries ahead of rejoining the rat race...

Do you need a licence to charter in Sicily?

If you want to bareboat charter you will need an approved boating qualification, below is a list of relevant qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence (ICC): Standard European Qualification for bareboat sailing

ASA 104 Bareboat sailing certificate : The American Sailing Associations skipper minimum qualification for hiring bareboat yachts

RYA: The Royal Yachting Association's qualifications (minimum day skipper level) is necessary for bareboat charter hire, it's also worthwhile seeing do you need to have done a VHF radio course, as well as some boat owners, will require this.

There are also many other European national boating qualifications that are accepted here too, it's worthwhile checking these details before hiring.

If you want a skippered boat rental as a charter yacht then you don't need any sailing certification at all, you just turn up and off you go.

Best Times To Hire

As a subtropical archipelago of islands, Sicily is good for sailing between March and October. Choosing the time to charter a yacht is very much down to your tastes. Some like the hurly-burly of fighting for mooring space in a marina and the buzz of a holiday town at full blast. If that's to your taste then do the trip in the fierce heat of July and August. Remember though that as with all other Italian marinas you will find that the prices go up at this time of year.

September and October can be a little cooler but the seas remain warm. You may get a bit of rain and even the odd gale but it's still warmer than in Northern Europe or New England. The towns are quieter too and the locals perhaps less busy enough to spend more time with you, helping you deepen your appreciation of the nation.

If you can get to Sicily during school term time - in May perhaps - you will get the warmth without the crowds.

The Climate

It does rain in Sicily but largely at higher altitudes on the mountainous interior. At lower levels - sea level - the islands often see drought come summer. Autumn and winter see the most rainfall.

What about the winds? Two of them dominate the Sicily climate:

Sirocco: This is a hot southerly wind that brings fierce heat from Africa. Recently temperatures have topped 40 degrees C fairly regularly, even in seaside towns like Trapani. Having crossed the Med it often bears humidity too.

Mistral: This is the northerly mountain wind from the Rhone Valley in France that often catches sailors unawares throughout the year. It can get quite strong at any time of the year but there is one advantage - it is a cool wind that will be a blessed relief from the Sirocco!

How much does it cost for a Sicily Yacht Charter?

A bareboat monohull sailing boat charter can cost as little as €120 a day - for four adults over a week you could be paying €210 per head for the trip. Most people don't earn enough in a year for two days on a €30,000 a day, 50-metre superyacht but there's a big industry catering for those types.

As well as the costs of hiring a yacht you will pay a fully refundable security deposit on your credit card at the beginning of the week. You can buy insurance to cover that instead (non-refundable). You will need fuel for the yacht and marina fees (that vary according to the time of year) as well as victualling costs - a case of Marsala is cheaper than a few nights quaffing it in restaurants. You may be paying for a skipper (€100 a day and up) as well as tipping them at the end of the trip (€200 isn't horrendous).

On top you will want entertainment expenses. On a typical Sicilian yacht charter, you won't be hitting vast arrays of nightclubs and drinking beer like your liver needs it. You can however find the odd Michelin starred restaurant and spend a fair few Euros eating the very best of Sicilian cuisine. You may also end up with a case of good booze too from a winery!

Explore Sicily By Renting A Yacht

The north and west coasts of Sicily are among the best yacht charter destinations in the west Mediterranean. Probably more of a sailing holiday for the family/older group who aren't hell-bent on partying every day but that's not to say you will be in complete isolation on your Sicily yacht charter. This is a wonderful way to get under the skin of a complex island region that has had a global impact with its eccentricities and exports.

Frequently asked questions

Sicily yacht charters are legal and of growing importance in its tourist sector.

You can charter everything from a small motorboat to a large superyacht. Monohull sailing yachts are common, though catamarans are more comfortable and spacious metre for metre.

Your budget for the sailing holiday should come first. Travelling - both getting there and what destinations to explore. What do you enjoy on a Sicily yacht charter? Work out your itinerary from there. Who are you taking with you and what are your limitations as a sailor?

The Sicilian sailing season runs from March to October. Though it can get wet in September/October you'll not likely feel the fiercest of heat of July/August yet the seas are still warm. Do try to get afloat outside school holidays.

There are two deposits to consider. Firstly you will normally have to pay a 50% deposit on booking. This secures your trip. On arrival you will have to pay a refundable security deposit for the trip on your credit card though you can get yacht charter insurance - though non-refundable this can be cheaper.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to/are on a mooring you will be able to phone a number given by the yacht charter company.

Do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter you want to book? Where do you want to go? Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing outside peak summer months. The weather can be cool as well as warm in the off-season though it rarely gets cold around the Sicily coast.

If you are from within the EU then you do not. Many countries with close links to Italy will also have tourist visa waivers for a charter like this. If in doubt, check with the Italian embassy in your country.

What is the best time of year Sicily boat charter?

One of the reasons that Sicily is such a popular sailing destination is because of the weather! The sailing conditions are also excellent; with steady winds from April to October and reliable currents, it will be smooth sailing on your Sicily yacht charter. It is important to be aware that the summer is Sicily’s high season so if you want to avoid large crowds, we’d recommend visiting in late Spring or early autumn. The weather will still be warm enough to go for a swim, and you’ll get better deals on boat charters in Sicily!

What can I see and do while on a private yacht charter in Sicily?

Sicily is an absolutely breathtaking island and there are so many amazing things to do. Here are some of our favourite things to do in Sicily with your yacht rental.

  • Go diving: One of the best places to go diving in Sicily is off the coast of the city of Trapani. Here you can find some incredible coral reefs and a huge variety of marine life. If you're looking for something a little more challenging, then the island of Favignana is definitely worth checking out. This is one of the best spots in Sicily for wreck diving, as there are a number of shipwrecks situated just off the coast.
  • Go to the beach: Sicily has no shortage of beautiful, sandy beaches! One of the most popular beaches on the island is Mondello Beach, which is located just outside of Palermo. This beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing and simply taking in the stunning views. Another great option is Isola Bella, which is a small island located just off the coast of Taormina. This beach is a little more secluded and therefore perfect if you're looking for a bit of peace and quiet.
  • Take a day trip: Renting a yacht in Sicily grants you the freedom to visit nearby destinations. Sicily itself is home to numerous tiny islands that can be explored, as well as several larger ones such as Stromboli and Lipari. For those who want to venture further afield, there are many other places to explore; Malta, Sardinia, Tunisia and the Aeolian Islands are all within easy reach by sea.
  • Practise watersports: If you want more than lazying around on golden sands, Sicily is the place to be. For hiking and river rafting, head to Gole dell Alcantara, the perfect spot for any adventurer. If you’re a fan of fishing, head to Isola Bella, a stunning beach lined with colourful fishing boats. It’s also a great spot for snorkelling! Finally, go to the long sandy beach of San Vito Lo Capo where you can find heart-racing activities like windsurfing and kayaking.

Should I have a skipper on board my private yacht rental in Sicily?

Even if you have a licence to sail, we recommend choosing a vessel with a skipper on board for your Sicily yacht rental. Skippers add a lot of value to your sailing holiday by ensuring that you see everything on your itinerary and more. Not only are they nautical professionals that will dock, anchor and sail the vessel for you, but they are also locals who will give you recommendations about where to go and what to see. If you’re lucky, they might even show you some hidden gems on the island. For a personalised boat trip in Sicily, choose a skippered vessel!

What type of boat should I choose for my Sicily yacht rental?

The type of boat you choose for your Sicily boat charter will depend on the amount of time you plan to spend on the water and what sort of amenities you think you’ll need on board. If you don’t need a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom and you only plan to rent for a few days, then we’d recommend a daily charter such as a motorboat or RIB. For a holiday of a week or more, you might need something a bit more spacious that is fully equipped with cabins and other accommodations. These vessels would include catamarans or yachts, which are great for a sailing trip with family or friends.

No matter which sort of vessel you’re looking for, you’re sure to find the best vessel for your Sicily boat trip with Scansail.

Sicily Yacht Charter Guide

Secrets of an aeolian islands yacht charter from local experts and our personal insights.

In late 2023 SailChecker took staff and family on a familiarisation trip in the Isolde Ellie. We tell it straight – what we enjoyed, what we did wrong! And what we’d next time. We mixed local experts and guides with our own personal triumphs and disasters.

On a Sicily yacht charter, you’re immediately surrounded by the historical tapestry of the Mediterranean. The main island of Sicily itself is an elegant blend of cultures with Norman churches, Greek temples, and Baroque designs painting a vibrant canvas. And if nature’s majesty calls you, Mount Etna stands proudly, the highest active volcano in Europe.

But Sicily offers more than just its classical heritage. In Palermo, every corner reveals a narrative—Arab domes juxtaposed with Byzantine mosaics, and Norman palace walls whispering tales of ancient rulers. Further south, the Baroque architectural masterpieces of southeast Sicily beckon. Throughout your journey, the silent watch of Arab and Norman castles serves as a testament to the island’s storied past.

However, the true charm for sailors lies a little to the north. The Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago just a few miles northwest of Palermo, are the crown jewels of Sicilian sailing. And it’s to these islands that we invite you to cast your sails and discover their undeniable allure.

Summary of Climatic Conditions on a Sicily Yacht Charter

  • Winds: In the Mediterranean, particularly around the Aeolian Islands, the winds can be quite unpredictable. The two primary winds to be aware of are the Scirocco (southeasterly) and the Mistral (northwesterly). While the Scirocco brings warm and humid conditions, the Mistral is cooler and can be quite gusty.
  • Precipitation: While the summer months are generally dry, it’s always good to be prepared for occasional rain, especially in the shoulder seasons. An understanding of the monthly rainfall patterns can be helpful.
  • Sea Conditions: Apart from temperature, it’s essential to be aware of the sea state, especially when sailing. Waves, currents, and tides can influence your sailing experience.
  • UV Index: The Mediterranean sun can be strong, especially in the peak summer months. Being aware of the UV index can help travelers take necessary precautions like wearing sunblock, sunglasses, and hats.
  • Thunderstorms: While not very frequent, thunderstorms can occur, especially in the transition seasons of spring and autumn. Being equipped with information about thunderstorm forecasts can help in planning the day’s activities.
  • Local Microclimates: Areas like the Aeolian Islands might have microclimates that can differ significantly from the general regional weather. Being aware of these local weather patterns can be beneficial.
  • Safety Measures: Ensure you have access to local weather channels or apps that can alert you to sudden changes in conditions, especially if a storm or high winds are predicted.

Everything you need to know about Food and Provisioning on a Sicily Yacht Charter in the Aeolian Islands.

Eating Ashore. When you embark on a Sicily Yacht Charter in the Aeolian Islands, you’re in for a culinary treat. From the bustling pizzerias and traditional osterias to upscale fine dining establishments, the gastronomic offerings are diverse and invariably delicious.

Local Delicacies . Amberjack, Vongole, and raw swordfish (locally referred to as “crudo”) are some of the delights we savored. The Gamerberti was another standout. However, a highlight for many is the opportunity to purchase fresh seafood directly from local fishermen. We had the pleasure of buying 1kg of prawns and calamari, which we then prepared, stuffing them with black rice – a delightful culinary adventure at sea.

Provisioning . For those considering provisioning, Lipari, the main island, boasts several well-stocked supermarkets, ranging from larger establishments to more intimate, medium-sized stores. While the other islands predominantly offer smaller shops, which can be slightly pricier, they’re sufficient for topping up essentials. So whether you’re planning to dine out or cook aboard, the Aeolian Islands cater to every palate and preference.

A Sicily yacht charter offers a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. It’s not just for one type of traveler but appeals to a diverse range:

  • Intermediate Sailors: Not just for experts, but those with some sailing experience will find the journey more rewarding. If you’re a novice skipper, why not consider a Skipper who will allow you to sail the boat under their guidance?
  • Families: A fantastic way to bond, with activities and sights that cater to both young and old.
  • Groups of Friends: The perfect backdrop for memorable adventures, from island hopping to beach barbecues.
  • Romantic Couples: An intimate setting for sunsets, private dinners, and serene mornings in picturesque locales.
  • Culture Enthusiasts: Dive deep into Sicilian history with each port offering a new cultural gem.
  • Gourmet Travelers: Savor the best of Sicilian cuisine, from fresh seafood to local delicacies.

Family bewildered after man found dead on burning boat dry-docked in Brooklyn

T he family of a man found dead last month on a burning boat in Brooklyn are bewildered — and say it’s the second time they’ve lost a sibling in just over a year while a third has been missing since November.

Anthony Doolan, 31, was discovered on the boat dry-docked in a Red Hook private lot on April 27 after the 4:54 a.m. blaze. Witnesses first called 911 reporting a dumpster fire, FDNY officials said. But when firefighters arrived to the fenced-in area on Conover St. near Beard St., they realized the fire was coming from a boat on a trailer.

Hours before Doolan was found he had been with his sister in Astoria, she said.

“He was at my house that morning,” said Jessica Simpson, 34. “He left my house at 1 a.m. He said he was going to go stay with his friend. He left and then I see on the news 3 or 4 hours after he left my house that this happened.”

For five days, Doolan’s family wondered where he was but with their brother homeless they had no way to contact him.

“He had no phone, nothing,” Simpson said. “I was reaching out [to others]. … Maybe he called one of his friends from upstate.”

It wasn’t until May 2 that Doolan’s family received word that he had died — and it was only after his death that family learned he had been sleeping on the boat.

“Him being burnt up and on a boat, it just doesn’t make sense,” the sister said.

On Friday, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the death is not considered suspicious at this time as cops wait for a final determination from the city medical examiner. An initial autopsy was inconclusive pending further study.

“Inside the boat we find lighters, cigarettes, vapes, syringes and a cooking stove that has butane fuel to light the stove,” Kenny said of the police investigation into the death. “We also find a benefit card and a pill bottle in a [different] male’s name. Through fingerprint analysis we’re able to identify the victim.”

“The body was found in a fetal position,” he added. “It seemed like he was sleeping in the boat and maybe using the stove as a source of heat.”

Several boats are stored in the lot, which also contains a homeless encampment next to the boat that burned, police said.

Doolan had several narcotics arrests on his record in Middletown, Orange County, Kenny said.

“I found out he was living on the boat because of the detective,” said brother Joseph Simpson, 41, of Middletown. “I’m still baffled by everything that’s happened.”

Doolan’s brother said Doolan had taken the death of his mother at age 14 particularly hard but the nine siblings stayed close, looking after each other, especially the youngest, Anthony.

“He was a good kid. He was young when we lost our mother, and from there he was lost without Mom. He moved up to Albany with me, he moved around with our sisters — he tried to find a way. He thought the city was going to be something new and amazing for him, and then this happened.”

“He was a harmless person, he would never hurt anybody,” he added. “He grew up a country boy, so setting himself on fire makes no sense to any of us.”

Doolan’s siblings, desperate for answers, say they haven’t heard from the NYPD and that it was police in Liberty, Sullivan County, who notified the family of Doolan’s death.

The death is just the latest hardship for the family.

“I’ve lost two brothers in the last year and another brother is presumed missing. It’s been a devastating year for our family,” posted Joseph Simpson in an online fundraiser. “I’m a proud man and I take pride in taking care of family. But I just can’t afford to pay for services and lay them to rest.”

Carl Simpson, 44, died in his sleep on April 2, 2023. Family said Carl’s autopsy results have yet to be released and his body is still with the medical examiner. Jason Simpson, 43, hasn’t been heard from since November.

Joseph Simpson said Jason and Anthony both went to New York City and kept an eye on each other while trying to make their way and make ends meet.

“They would stick together, they would do things together. They would do their little hustles with cans, they would go to soup kitchens,” said Joseph Simpson.

Doolan’s family is left only with fond memories of their little brother pretending to be a superhero while riding his bike, willing to do anything for a laugh.

“He had the best sense of humor,” said eldest sister Melissa Doolan, 48. “He’d ride around town with a ShopRite bag on his shoulders like it was a cape.”

“He would do impressions of people, he was such a comedian,” said Joseph Simpson. “He would jump up on the table and do a Johnny Cash impression.”

Family is hoping anyone with information comes forward.

“They say a man was found dead but to us it’s not a man who was found dead, it’s our baby brother,” said Joseph Simpson. “We have to get to the bottom of this one way or another.”

Ben Affleck laid bare his and Jennifer Lopez’s ‘different approaches’ to their relationship before breakup rumors

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Ben Affleck admitted to compromising in his relationship with Jennifer Lopez just months before rumors started swirling that their marriage is on the rocks.

In the singer’s documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” the “Argo” star reflected on the changes he had to make to ensure the couple would not face the same issues they did in the early 2000s when they were first engaged.

“When Jen and I broke up before, the catalyst for that was the amount of scrutiny around our private life,” Affleck said in the Amazon Prime Video film, which premiered in February. “I had a very firm sense of boundaries, initially, around the press.”

The Oscar winner, 51, blamed the media for the pair calling off their 2004 wedding, so when they rekindled their romance in 2021, he asked Lopez if they could handle the limelight differently.

“Getting back together, I said, ‘Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media,'” he recalled. “And then I sort of realized it’s not a fair thing to ask. It’s sort of like you’re gonna marry a boat captain and [say] like, ‘Well, I don’t like the water.'”

He added, “We’re just two people with different approaches, trying to learn to compromise.”

Elsewhere in the documentary, Affleck admitted he had hesitations about being in Lopez’s fictional companion film, “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” but was ultimately glad to be a part of it.

“I don’t really love being in the making-of documentary about my personal life, which is why I’m so relieved,” he said.

“It seems like I might be in this [movie], but I’m not really. … I was worried for no reason. The movie wasn’t about me. It was about the ability to love yourself. And that love story is a lot f–king harder to find than Prince Charming.”

Affleck’s on-camera admission resurfaced this week after reports that he and Lopez, 54, are headed for divorce.

The actor and the pop star reportedly have been living in separate houses , and she recently fueled split rumors by “liking” an Instagram post describing the qualities of an unhealthy relationship .

The post stated that “you cannot build a healthy relationship with somebody” who “lacks integrity and emotional safety” and “communication skills,” “doesn’t respect your time” and does not have a strong sense of self.

Notably, Affleck also did not attend the 2024 Met Gala with his wife , a co-chair of the event, earlier this month.

A source close to the pair claimed Thursday that they are “having issues in their marriage.”

“They started having issues a few months ago as Jen had started ramping up work commitments and prepping for her tour ,” the insider told Us Weekly.

“They are on two completely different pages most of the time,” the source continued, reiterating that Lopez “is very focused on work” at the moment.

Another insider told InTouch Weekly that the “Gigli” co-stars are trying to work through their issues in couples therapy.

“Ben believes in therapy, to a point, and is willing to be a good sport about participating with an open mind, even though he hates the whole humiliating process,” the source claimed.

“He’s never going to gauge the success of this marriage by what happens in the therapist’s office. He also has a higher tolerance for conflict and having to fight to get his way than the average guy.”

Affleck and Lopez blended their families after tying the knot in July 2022.

The “Gone Girl” star shares daughters Violet, 18, and Seraphina, 15, and son Samuel, 12, with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner , while the “Selena” star has twins, Max and Emme, 16, with her ex-husband Marc Anthony .

Captain Andy was a joy to sell with. I had 2 children with me and he was very accommodating and the children loved him. I was not doing too good with the deep sea so he was very Accommodating and whipped us into the intercoastal Where we sailed up the inner coastal and fished with the children it was wonderful. Definitely a 10 out of a 10!!
