Friend invited me in as a guest. Never realized this was located at the end of City Island because of the restaurants that are there. Really can't tell it's here till you get inside the gate. Dining area is well kept and casual. Staff is also friendly. I was there for Sunday brunch and had to wait till noon before ordering off the lunch menu. Find their overall food prices very reasonable. Heard they also have a different membership if you don't own a boat.

Out of all the years of being here in NY - I can finally say I've been to the BRONX! Wooo hooo - not sure if City Island really counts as the boogie down Bronx, but I am still checking off Bronx from my list. Came here sailing with cutie patootie E and A. This place offers storage spaces for you to put your personal things there for safe keeping. (i.e life jackets, fishing poles, and etc.) As we walked out I could see an endless amount of mussels - DAMN too bad you can't eat them because I would have brought a pot. We got onto the launch and the launch operator took us out to the sail boat. It was a breezy Saturday not so much sun, so I had trouble sitting still without loosing my balance. I never knew New York could be this peaceful or this beautiful. The scenery is amazing and I never imagine the houses in the Bronx looks like the ones back home. Maybe this is why it didn't feel like the Bronx to me. You can fish here, but I didn't really see anyone fishing that day except cruising around in their boats. When the weather is good, you can hang out on the shore or throw private parties here. There's really not much else to review here since there's no food - it's just basically you and your boat. Oh, they have real restrooms here...no port-a-potties!

i spent my entire childhood being dragged kicking & screaming from the boondocks streets of Fort Greene bklyn 80's to this backwater backward backyard of the Bronx every summer weekend. But now looking back i miss the old style of salty-dog types that frequented this place with their sundameged pinacle playing over sized sun glassed wearing wives sitting on the lawn while their sea fare husbands were running the dry dock & downing six packs Bud out of igloos. a little of the old remains here withing the people & the great lawn...but after the fire and new high tech dry dock installation its a shell of its former self.....still 5 stars just not my kind of 5 stars...but that's just me, i miss the old but to be fair its a change that was going to come whether i like it or not.

A few months ago, my fiancé and I were on City Island and decided to stop by Morris Yacht Club, to possibly hold our wedding. We called and were told to come right by. When we arrived, we could not find anyone to speak with or any way to get into the building. We walked around for a while, knocked on doors (which were all locked) we were unable to find anyone to speak to, so we left. This week, we decided to give it a second chance. We called earlier in the week and made an appointment for 1pm on Saturday to meet with Kim. Upon arrival, we were informed that Kim had stepped out but would be back in half an hour. We were invited to explore the place on our own and have a drink, until Kim returned. After 45 minutes, we notified them that we had another appointment and couldn't wait any longer. The only reply we got was a very disinterested "OK." No one asked for our contact information. There was no apology for our inconvenience nor any desire to have us return. Considering the rave reviews I have read and the fact that they were preparing for other events, it seems many people have been given a much better customer service experience than we received. I can only ascertain that the fact that we are a same sex couple had something to do with our treatment.

This is the most exceptional place on city island. It was a NYC landmark before it's tragic electrical fire... But the club it self is stronger than even... I grew up here,.. And there were no better memories.

The Morris has changed for the better. With it's brand new club house and travel lift to haul boats, it has gone through a metamorphosis. It hosts a catering hall and restaurant with beautiful views of the long Island sound and Manhattan. Definitely a must see!!

Photo of Evan S.

My girlfriends family joined Morris about 1 year ago to access kayaking a bit easier. I must say, I did have a preconceived notion about the degree to which one had to have their nose tilted in the air to attend a yacht club. However, upon going to Morris fairly consistently on the weekends, I no longer feel this way. We do not have a boat, so I cannot review the amenities regarding that, however it is a great place to have your kayak, and an awesome place to hang out when the weather is nice. I have not had a chance to eat but they have a nice bar/restaurant upstairs and I have ingested some pretty delicious libations. I would give it 5 stars if they had a pool, and if they kept better care of their beach. ( Nothing bad, but it could use a good combing). Will return on a weekly basis.

Faced early last year with a rent increase at their apartment in Washington Heights, Jessica Wolk-Stanley, 49, an illustrator, and her husband, Dmitry Kushnirsky, 45, an architect and avid sailor, shopped for homes in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. Leery of flood zones, they leaned toward places with “heights” or “hill” in the name.

When they learned that some homes on City Island, a quaint neighborhood in the Bronx on Long Island Sound, had elevations high enough above sea level to preclude expensive flood insurance, they took a closer look at the waterfront community, which was largely spared the wrath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Detached from New York City’s hustle and bustle, the island, a mile and a half long by a half-mile wide, with about 4,400 residents, appeals to first-time buyers, artists, homeowners downsizing from Westchester and boaters, said Sue Kawczynski, an agent with City Island Real Estate.

In August 2014, Ms. Wolk-Stanley and Mr. Kushnirsky bought a “super old-fashioned and quaint” two-story 1920s house with three bedrooms, two baths, front and back porches and a detached “slightly decrepit” garage on a lot of almost 40 by 100 feet, paying $481,000. To their delight, the home’s original kitchen had sturdy cabinets “with wonderful details,” Ms. Wolk-Stanley said.

At the end of their street is a beach club with a few grills for members’ use, a popular arrangement. “It’s $100 and you get a key,” Ms. Wolk-Stanley said. “It is old-school, small-town friendly.”

morris beach and yacht club city island

Their 15-year-old son landed a summer job at Lickety Split Ice Cream on City Island Avenue, the north-south spine of the neighborhood. Their 11-year-old daughter and her friends “walk by themselves to each others’ houses, which is nice,” Ms. Wolk-Stanley said. Children ride bikes and walk to school.

“It is a very close community and it is a boating community,” said Gene Valesio, a retired advertising executive who has lived on City Island for 35 years and is acting commodore of the Morris Yacht and Beach Club, one of several on the island.

From the club’s sandy beach and new clubhouse, there are sweeping views of the Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges and the Manhattan skyline.

Along City Island Avenue, the picture is not as rosy. City Island was hit hard by the crash in 2008, said Skip Giacco, the president of the local chamber of commerce, and has been slow to recover. About 18 storefronts are empty. “Muffin places and things that work in Manhattan don’t work here.”

Paul Klein, owner of the Kaleidoscope Gallery, said his gift shop used to stay open until midnight on weekends, but now closes at 7 p.m.

“Back in the day, people would stroll up and down the avenue in the evening,” said Mr. Klein, who is also the vice president of the local chamber. Since the downturn, weekend visitors “go to a restaurant and leave.”

With more than 100 artists on the island, Mr. Klein said chamber and civic representatives are talking with city and state officials about turning storefronts into spaces for artists to live and work, with galleries in front. “It will make the commercial corridor more vibrant,” he said.

What You’ll Find

From City Island Avenue, residential streets run east and west. Homes vary from bungalows and picturesque cottages on lots as narrow as 25 feet to semidetached houses, Victorians and shingle-style waterfront homes.

Along City Island Avenue are marine supply shops, two small supermarkets, galleries, gift and antiques shops, churches, a branch of the New York Public Library and Public School 175. Next door is Ambrosini Field , with playground equipment and a baseball field. A dolphin sculpture welcomes visitors to shady Hawkins Park . A touring kayak club is on the island’s eastern shore.

A new waterfront gated condominium community, On the Sound , is under construction on the eastern side of the island, next to the Boatyard, a 1980s gated condominium.

What You’ll Pay

Compared with Westchester, Connecticut and Long Island, City Island has “very affordable waterfront properties,” said Kathy Dispenza, an agent with Better Homes and Gardens Rand Realty.

Janie Blanks, an associate broker with J. Philip Real Estate, said the market this year is “a lot stronger than in previous years,” with sales increasing but “not necessarily the prices.”

Inventory is limited. An entry-level, fixer-upper cottage of about 500 square feet on a 25-by-100-foot lot can go for the mid to high $200,000s, Ms. Blanks said. The median sales price from May 15 to Aug. 15 was $444,000, according to Trulia.com, a 19.2 percent increase compared with the same period in 2014. Over the last five years, however, median sales prices have decreased 15.4 percent.

Through Aug. 24 of this year, 34 homes sold; the highest went for $972,000, said Sue Kawczynski, an agent with City Island Real Estate. During the same period last year, 18 homes sold, the highest for $980,000.

The cost of flood insurance, which depends on elevation, “is the biggest drawback” to sales, Ms. Kawczynski said.

At On the Sound, the new gated community, about half the 43 condominiums, in the style of two-family houses, are sold, said Jeffrey Simpson, head of the property development group at Greystone, the developer. Prices range from $488,000 to $928,000 for units with two to four bedrooms and two to four baths, according to a spokewoman for Greystone. Monthly common charges start at around $466. The enclave will have an outdoor heated pool, a clubhouse, a fitness center and a playground.

Jack’s Bait and Tackle rents four-person fiberglass motorboats and charter, fishing and party boats for up to 100 passengers. There are seasonal sailing races on Wednesday evenings at the Morris Yacht and Beach Club.

The City Island Nautical Museum displays artifacts from the community’s boatbuilding past in an 1898 former school that is a city landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.

A local hangout, the Starving Artist Cafe and Gallery , offers live entertainment. The City Island Theater Group , a community theater, will produce Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite” at Grace Hall in November.

More than 30 restaurants include big ones like the Lobster Box and smaller, more eclectic places like Artie’s Steak and Seafood , the City Island Diner , Bistro SK and the Black Whale .

Nearby, Pelham Bay Park , with almost 2,800 acres, has hiking trails, bridle paths, two golf courses, playgrounds, athletic fields, Orchard Beach and the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum .

The Schools

P.S 175 has about 330 students in kindergarten through Grade 8. In English, 36 percent met state standards, versus a city average of 28 percent, according to the 2013-14 School Quality Snapshot . In math, 48 percent met standards, compared with 34 percent citywide.

The Commute

The express bus BxM8 to and from Manhattan runs twice in each direction on weekdays; it takes around an hour and 15 minutes to Midtown and costs $6.50. Commuters also take the Bx29 bus to the Pelham Bay Park subway station, then switch to the No. 6 train. The subway takes about 45 minutes to Grand Central Terminal. In light traffic, the drive to Midtown can take half an hour.

The History

From around 1860 to 1980, City Island was a yacht- and boatbuilding center, said Barbara Burn Dolensek, administrator and vice president of the historical society, which runs the nautical museum. Schooners sailing down Long Island Sound stopped at City Island to pick up Hell Gate pilots to help them navigate the difficult passage to New York Harbor. During the World Wars, P.T. boats, landing craft, minesweepers and sub chasers were built for the United States government. After World War II, yacht building resumed, and several 12-meter sloops that successfully defended the America’s Cup were built here.

The State of Real Estate

Whether you’re renting, buying or selling, here’s a look at real estate trends..

When Donna Lennard, the owner of the restaurant Il Buco, bought a house in East Hampton, “it was an adorable cottage” surrounded by water. Now it’s even better .

A man who struggled to find housing in East Hampton has turned his experience into a podcast , and many of his guests are “navigating the waters of trying to make a living here.”

The renovation of a 1953 trailer bought on impulse  turned a backyard into an upscale version of a campground — complete with a marble shower in the trees.

As climate change produces more extreme weather, insurers are losing money, even in states with low hurricane and wildfire danger. Here’s how home insurance rates are affected .

High-end condos and rentals now offer medically dubious therapies  like at-home IV drips as a regular wellness practice, not just a vacation splurge.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.

Passenger river transportation is being actively revived in Moscow. Already in June, for the first time in 17 years, the authorities promise to launch river buses. Maybe that's why the idea of owning a yacht is increasingly coming up among wealthy Muscovites, and there are more and more yachtsmen who would like to live close to the place of attraction of like-minded people. Next to the yacht clubs there are 21 projects in the primary market of Moscow. More than half of these projects are premium. The experts of the Elitnoye.ru portal, using the data of the Metrium company, decided to talk about the leading metropolitan centers of yachting and tourism, as well as about the premium-class complexes adjacent to them.
