  • Safari Explorer

safari explorer yacht

The luxury motor yacht Safari Explorer embodies an ambiance of refinement and relaxation, with just 36 guests. Her crew of 14-15 takes care of passengers’ every need. The performance-built Safari Explorer primarily cruises the Hawaiian Islands and Alaska’s Inside Passage .

Safari Explorer Review

AdventureSmith Explorations’ Safari Explorer review includes a detailed description of the small ship including deck plans and a photo gallery. Our expedition cruise experts have been aboard the Safari Explorer firsthand. Please read our Safari Explorer ship review below, then contact our small ship cruise experts for more information and to compare the Safari Explorer with other ships offering Alaska small ship cruises , Hawaiian Island cruises , Canada cruises and Pacific Northwest cruises . The 36-passenger M/V Safari Explorer is the Goldilocks of small ships; not too big, not too small, but just the right size. She offers the space and amenities of an expedition vessel but maintains the intimacy and efficiency of a smaller yacht. She continually receives rave reviews from AdventureSmith Explorations’ staff and clients, and is a favorite for Hawaii yacht charters and luxury Alaska cruises . While the cabins and common areas are decidedly exclusive, it is her service, programs and cuisine that stand out the most. Choose the Safari Explorer if you are seeking a small ship that feels like a yacht. She has upscale appointments and a yacht-like atmosphere but still feels comfortable and welcoming. Expect as much activity as you wish, with the luxury you would expect from a much larger ship. AdventureSmith’s founder, Todd Smith, has always called this ship the quintessential expedition ship: “I always say that once you cruise aboard the Safari Explorer, you will be hooked on small ships forever.”

Common Areas Aboard Safari Explorer

There are several comfortable and upscale social areas aboard the Safari Explorer, each providing opportunities to relax and mingle with new friends. The spacious wine library/salon features cozy chairs, warm wood accents and a large flat-screen television with DAD player. Large couches and a piano adorn the lounge, adjacent to a full-service bar (stocked with complimentary premium beer and spirits).

Dining Aboard Safari Explorer

The Dining Room, located on the Main Deck, provides a casual atmosphere with open seating that accommodates all guests in one sitting. Meals aboard the Safari Explorer are served over several courses, with particular attention to the personal preferences of diners. Executive Chefs create exquisite meals, using locally sourced fresh ingredients to reflect the flavors of each destination. Each day includes an early-riser breakfast of fresh fruit, onboard-baked pastries and breads and a full breakfast complete with specialty items. Lunches range from pasta salads and sandwiches to homemade soups and ethnic dishes. Elegant plated dinners offer a choice of entrées, including fresh seafood and meats; a split plate is available for indecisive eaters. Vegetarian dishes are available and special dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice. Hors d’oeuvres for the cocktail hour feature a variety of appetizers and desserts are varied and plentiful. Fine spirits, wines and microbrews are included.

Activities Aboard Safari Explorer

Aboard the yacht, three public decks provide plenty of room for mingling, relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. The salon and lounge provide an inviting space to be educated by lectures on the environment, wildlife, history and culture of the region. Local experts are often invited along as special guests to “talk story” and provide insights unavailable to most other visitors. On select departures, onboard expert naturalists and guides are complemented by guest hosts in the fields of ornithology, photography, marine biology, wine and wellness, among others.

Active adventure cruises aboard the Safari Explorer allow freedom to engage in many activities. Adventure equipment on board includes kayaks and stand-up paddleboards; inflatable skiffs; hiking poles; yoga mats and hydrophones for listening to below-surface sounds. And when operating as a Hawaii yacht, snorkel gear and wetsuits are on board for exploring tropical waters. A full-beam swim step makes for easy access to the water from the stern of the vessel.

The open bridge policy provides opportunities to chat with the officers and crew. The Bridge Deck features exercise equipment and space for morning yoga classes, or space to kick back in a comfortable chair for an afternoon cocktail.

Hear It From Travelers Who’ve Sailed Aboard The Safari Explorer

We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships. This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

We wanted warmth, water and whales, did Sea of Cortes in 2022, so Hawaii was the obvious choice. As usual UnCruise was 5* all the way.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable. The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit!

This was an ideal trip -- so many fun activities in a beautiful variety of Hawaiian locations, and yet without crowds and hustle-bustle. We loved the snorkeling and whale watching most. Both gave us a sense of awe at nature's variety and beauty, and the small groups with expert guides provided a rare atmosphere of intimacy. Everyone in our group of 25 was good-natured and enthusiastic. The night snorkel with manta rays was a disappointment because only one ray appeared that evening, but there were dozens of unruly tourists.

This trip was a blissful contrast to the "touristy" experience one often finds elsewhere in Hawaii. We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships.  This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

Accommodations Review

The ship was comfortable and welcoming.  Our cabin, while not large, had plenty of storage and was well appointed.

Meals Review

We thought the food was superb.  Both the chef and pastry chef offered a wonderful variety of delights at every meal, and we were always given choices.  The service was always capable and gracious

Crew & Guides Review

Our leaders (Jill Q. and Jill B) couldn't have been better.  They were highly knowledgeable, obviously loved nature and Hawaii, always positive and helpful -- they had that elusive balance of energy and even temper.  They went out of their way to give us a beautiful experience!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The information provided and Aaron's helpfulness were great.

Traveler Advice

Try to plan some time in Hawaii before and after the cruise.  The "before" allowed us to explore another part of the islands -- and gave the airline time to get our luggage to us two days late!  The "after" gives a chance to transition from the relaxation of the cruise to the hassle of the flight home.

First time on UC Safari Explorer and it is a gem of a small ship. Somewhat larger cabin than we are used to which was nice.

Food was excellent, although the Sunday evening pa'ina (sp) meal was a bit too much after a long day out in the Hawala valley. Would have preferred to relax on the ship.

Wilson and Annie (the whale whisperer) were SO MUCH FUN. And per usual on UC they knew a ton about everything nature, ocean, geology etc.

Itinerary Review

[We most enjoyed]...snorkeling with sea turtles and seeing lots of whales and dolphins. We did feel that they are missing a major educational opportunity by not having any presentation about Kaluapapa (the former leper colony) on Molokai. This could have been a substitute for the aforementioned dinner at the museum.

Pack light! You never need as many clothes as you think you do. Consider your own snorkel equipment - we invested in that and I loved having a dry snorkel.

  • UnCruise Adventures

Beyond excellent in all ways! Snorkeling every day in a wide diversity of settings was our favorite activity. We also felt that all the excursions were planned so that you were fully immersed in the Hawaiian culture and experience.

Our ship quarters were compact but had ample storage even for over-packers like us.

The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Portion size was not overwhelming which I appreciated. You were always able to modify a dish or even request salads or oatmeal. Desserts were amazing, quality over quantity. Great specialty drinks and appetizers.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable.

Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

  • Arielle Lightcap

Simply fantastic. We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

We had wanted to see Hawaii, but are not overly enthusiastic about crowds and commercialism. We wanted to see multiple islands, but did not know which ones to pick. This cruise was perfect, since they took us to 4 different islands and arranged lots of great activities. It was especially great because everything (including the alcohol) was included in one price.

Amazingly good food!

Maria and Jess did great jobs as our expedition leader/guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities and their enthusiasm.

We appreciated the advance information. And my questions were promptly and accurately answered.

There was one hike that was a bit grueling for me, but they were up front about it at the beginning. In spite of that, it was good to be out in the forest in Hawaii and see some things we don't see at home.

This trip exceeded our expectations! We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit! We enjoyed all the water activities the most...mostly because that’s what we enjoy, and they were worth the effort. We saw lots of great fish, coral and other wildlife. We loved the whales, they put on quite a show! The group seemed to connect fairly quickly. Some great new friends!

The room on Safari Explorer was very nice. Bed was very comfortable!

All the meals were excellent!

We had everything we needed, and everything was well prepared for our travel and reservation.

The entire crew was amazing. They got to know us within minutes of our first encounter, and always seemed to have a genuine concern for us. Jessica and Lauren were amazing. Both we well informed and found the best opportunities for us in every situation. Always very concerned and watching out for our safety. Both had a great sense of humor, Lauren tells some pretty good jokes! Jessica was always very positive and optimistic, and authentically sincere! They were an absolute delight! I don’t remember the name of the boat driver in Kona, he drove the Black Pearl. He was very informative and a lot of fun.

UnCruise Adventures

Small Ship Safari Explorer

Safari Explorer is designed for upscale comfort in the pursuit of adventure.

This high-end SUV of a yacht is nimble, strong, and loving. The Safari Explorer has what mariners call “feet” that take her into wild areas big ships can’t visit. Her performance-built rugged construction means access to faraway regions. But it’s what’s on the inside that makes this vessel the prize of the fleet. And with only 36 guests on board, the feel is decidedly exclusive.   Lovingly called “the Bulldog,” she’s poised, her interior is a pearl, and the general mood is down-to-earth. In the winter, she bops around the islands of Hawaii soaking up the laid-back aloha spirit—weaving through the islands, ready for bow-riding dolphins. In the summer, she follows the Humpbacks north to Alaska, navigating the inside passage and taking in The Great Land. A protective spirit is infused in every part of the ship, and within the crew. She’s made for adventures after all and with them comes inevitable fun and folly.

Onboard Features: Full-beam swim step; kayaks, paddleboards, inflatable skiffs, hiking poles, snorkel gear; on-deck hot tub (not available in Hawaii); fitness equipment and yoga mats; DVD and book library; wine library.

Safari Explorer Itineraries

Safari explorer review, review of safari explorer.

The 1998-built MS Safari Explorer cruise ship (orignally named "MV Rapture”) is currently owned and operated by UnCruise Adventures USA . The vessel was extensively drydock-refurbished in 2008 for USD 3,5 million.

Like all UnCruise ships, Safari Explorer (IMO number 8964654) is USA- flagged (MMSI 366339000) and all American-crewed.

History - construction and ownership

The 695-ton, 36-passenger ship Safari Explorer has a navy blue hull and offers refined atmosphere, just like all other Un-Cruise Adventures ships – the expedition-style cruising is combined with luxury.

UnCruise Adventures (formerly American Safari Cruises) is a USA-based, wholly-owned cruise company, a subsidiary of InnerSea Discoveries Alaska. In 2013, the American Safari Cruises line was renamed to "Un-Cruise Adventures". Currently, the company has 2 headquarters - main headquarters in Seattle WA  and second in  Juneau AK .

Safari Explorer Wiki

Safari Explorer cruise ship (former name "mv Rapture", until 2009) was built as a bare-bones expedition marine vessel. It emerged again after a $3,5 mill renovation in 2008 boasting 18 oceanview cabins, all offering private bathrooms with heated tile floors.

All Un-Cruise Adventures’ ships boast navy blue hulls and refined atmosphere. The Explorer ship's size makes it easy to visit areas that bigger ships cannot. This cruise ship is the best choice for those who like expedition-style cruising and activities, combined with luxury on board. The other Un-Cruise "Safari" ships are Endeavour ,  Quest  and  Voyager .

Safari Explorer - a typical expedition cruise ship - has adventure equipment that includes stand-up paddle boards and kayaks; inflatable skiffs; hiking poles; hydrophone (for listening to sounds below the surface). The bow-mounted underwater camera is linked to the yacht's lounge and to all cabin TVs.

The small-capacity Safari Explorer cruises in Southeast Alaska and Hawaiian Islands regions.

In early-February 2019, UnCruise announced a new 7-day itinerary (themed "Aloha Hawaii Adventure Cruise") part of company's "Hawaii Small Ship Cruise" 2019 program on Safari Explorer. The scheduled 6 summer departures (July-August) visit 4 Hawaiian islands. The 7-day roundtrips are from  Kaunakakai (Molokai Island)  to  Lanai Island (Day 3), Maui Island (Olowalu, Day 4), sea day (Day 5) and Hawaii Island (Da 6 Milolii / Honomalino Bay, Day 7 Kailua-Kona , Day 8 Disembarkation / Kawaihae Harbor). UnCruise operates seasonally in Hawaii since 2011. The new voyages include themed activities like sea kayaking, hiking, snorkelling, paddle boarding, wildlife viewing, skiff (boat) tours.

Vessel Type: Small Ship

Length: 145 ft

Passenger Capacity: 36

Built: 1998

Three decks accessible to guests are designed for your comfort and sense of adventure. The Bridge Deck offers the rooftop sun lounge, exercise equipment, hot tub (open during Alaska cruises only), open bridge, and the Commodore Suites. The cabin deck houses guests in the Master and Commander categories, as well as the Jr Commodore and one Admiral cabin. The main deck holds the larger Admiral suites as well as the luxurious common areas.

The Dining Room features open seating meals served at table at set times. Unlimited soda, juices and lemonade as well as alcoholic beverages are included in the price of the cruise. Vegetarian options are always available, and dietary restrictions are happily accommodated if noted in advance. The Main deck also houses the Salon, Bar, and Wine Bar.

Onboard Features: kayaks, paddleboards, inflatable skiffs, hiking poles, snorkel gear/wetsuits; one on-deck hot tub (open Alaska cruises only); fitness equipment and yoga mats; rubber boots from women's size 5 to men's size 12, medium width; reusable water bottles; DVD and book library and full-beam swim step for loading and off loading.

This high-end SUV of a ship is nimble, strong, and loving. The 36-passenger Safari Explorer has what mariners call “feet” that take her into wild areas other ships can’t visit. Her performance-built rugged construction means access to faraway regions. But it’s what’s on the inside that makes this yacht the prize of the fleet.

Lovingly called “the Bulldog,” Safari Explorer is poised, her interior is a pearl, and the general mood is down-to-earth. Throughout the year, she bops around the islands of Hawaii soaking up the laid-back aloha spirit—weaving through the islands, ready for bow-riding dolphins. A protective spirit infused in every part of the ship, and within the crew. She’s made for adventures after all and with them comes inevitable fun and folly.

Public Spaces

The Safari Explorer hosts several comfortable public areas, each providing the perfect environment to relax and make new, likeminded friends. The observation decks are excellent places for wildlife viewing, or simply relaxing under the stars. Hang out in the lounge, which offers a variety of board games, books, DVDs, and plenty of space to kick back and watch the landscape go by. An open bridge policy allows you to visit with your captain and mates. There’s even the occasional galley tour, which shows off what the chef and crew do in a limited space.

There are plenty of opportunities for wellness, fitness, and relaxation. Interact with the fitness equipment, take laps around the deck, or participate in on-deck yoga stretches.

Kayak launcher

Exploration Tools

Hike, swim, kayak, paddle board, snorkel, and sail your way through a paradise like no other.

Gear up with a snorkel and flippers, and duck below the surface to discover coral gardens teeming with underwater life. Tandem sit-on-top kayak allow you to join a guided paddle to a planned destination, or explore at your own pace on an open paddle. For an easygoing adventure, step off the beam and into an inflatable skiff. Hikes are available for every activity level; from quiet strolls to rugged climbs up to sweeping cliff-side viewpoints.

Inclusive cruises aboard Safari Explorer feature these activities at no extra charge. With a well stocked ship with outdoor recreation gear, everyone is invited to get in on the fun.

Salon aboard Safari Explorer

Salon and Bar

The spacious salon, where lectures on the environment, wildlife, history, and culture of the region are held, and wine library features cozy chairs, warm wood accents and a large flat-screen television with DVD player. Spacious couches and a piano adorn the lounge, adjacent to a full-service bar (stocked with complimentary premium beer and spirits).

The bar is guaranteed to wet passenger’s whistle. Wines tend to come from Washington and Oregon, but impressive international wines are also available. Behind the bar, you’ll find premium and small-batch, craft spirits. Cocktails are mixed with seasonal, local ingredients, house-made mixers, and cordials, even some house-infused spirits (like a cucumber vodka or gin). The UnCruise Bloody Mary mix is popular, too (guests line up for the stuff). And while the occasional tastings do pop up, most bartenders are tinkerers by nature. Inspiration can come from the unique experiences of the day, the wilderness explored, or stories from hearty explorers

Dining room aboard Safari Explorer

Safari Explorer’s Dining Room provides a bright, cheery, casual atmosphere to dine with fellow passengers.

Early-riser breakfasts of fresh fruit and baked-on-board pastries
compliment full breakfasts with hot and cold options. Lunches featuring salads, sandwiches, homemade soups, and
regionally influenced dishes
. A variety of hors d’oeuvres are available during the late afternoon cocktail hour
. Dinners with a choice of entrées including fresh, local seafood, meats, and vegetarian dishes. Finish your culinary adventure off with made-from-scratch desserts like tiramisu and lavender panna cotta
.

Unless there’s a special barbecue or lunch on shore, most dinners are served over several courses. Attention is always paid to your personal preferences and dietary restrictions. The atmosphere and dress code in each ship’s dining room is casual. And the seating is open so you can join new friends and choose a different table at every meal.

Loved the small boat experience and being able to up close with nature. While food was plentiful I thought it would be a little more gourmet for the price we were paying.
