Lionheart is the first modern replica J Class to be built in aluminium and was launched in July 2010. The original owner who commissioned JH1 was a repeat client of Andre Hoek who had then simply sought to build the fastest J Class yet.

Hoek developed their own VPP (velocity prediction program) software to analyse all the existing J Class designs before CFD and traditional tank testing with 6 metre long models. Hoek identified the J Class Ranger as outstanding from a family of seven Burgess and Stephens designs which were originally submitted to Harold Vanderbilt in 1936, and it was this design that was used for Lionheart.

The design showed exceptional promise as a very good all-rounder, fast on all points of sail in light, medium and heavy winds. Designed at 43.4m she was to be the longest on the waterline at the time.

In terms of deck and rig hardware, Lionheart fully utilised modern superyacht and grand prix race yacht technology where appropriate, significantly moving forwards J Class construction and specification using the most powerful winches and hydraulic systems available to optimise sail handling and trimming, keep all up weight down and to deal with the high rig loads.

Lionheart is the first J Class to have adopted a double cockpit layout with a private owners’ cockpit and deckhouse aft of the wheel and, forward of the wheel, a large guest cockpit leading to the main companionway and deckhouse. This allows the working area of the boat to be separated from the guests, improves communications between the afterguard and allows more of the working crew to work inside a cockpit rather than on the deck.

True to that original promise, Lionheart has been the standout performer on the race course since she was launched. From 2014 when they won in Menorca, Palma and Sardinia until 2017 when she won the seven boat J Class Superyacht Regatta and the J Class America’s Cup in Bermuda, followed by the inaugural J Class World Championship in Newport RI.

Then under the guidance of tactician Bouwe Bekking, the Lionheart project evolved to the highest level thanks to their desire to improve as a team. Each regatta saw Lionheart make comprehensive daily briefings and debriefings, they optimised their performance package and trained hard as a team. And over the years the owner became one of the most accomplished, competitive helms in the fleet. Bekking retained key core crew from the Brunel round the world race programme he skippered.

Lionheart has cruised extensively since 2017 and was expected to return to the race course in 2023 before their plans were put on hold.

JH1 Lionheart

The first fruits of our lengthy research into the J-class, Lionheart was unveiled in early 2010. In 2011 she became the first Hoek-designed J to hit the race course, starting with the Superyacht Cup in Palma. Lionheart benefits from ideas developed for other large classic yachts, including the privacy concept with an aft owner’s cabin, deckhouse and cockpit. Specific velocity prediction software was developed by our office to determine the exact performance of specific J-class hull shapes. Tank testing data for a six-metre J-class model as well as wind tunnel data were used to calibrate this software. All existing and potential J-class designs were run through this software to determine the effects of different hull shapes on performance. The five best models were subsequently also analysed by Computational Fluid Dynamics software. Various yachts are under construction thanks to this successful research. Lionheart’s original hull design was one of the lines plans made for the Ranger syndicate in 1936. Although never built, our research showed that this design was very promising. The yacht has been extensively optimised by our office with VPP software for racing under handicap and line honours. She was outfitted by Claasen Jachtbouw and features a retro-styled interior in teak.

Lionheart is the leading J Class at the moment and World champion since 2017. That year she won the title in Newport (RI) as well as the America’s Cup J Class regatta where seven J’s were competing.

Superyacht Lionheart - Worlds Largest J-Class Launched

The stunning super J-Class yacht Lionheart, recently launched by Dutch shipyard Claasen Jachtbouw, has been announced for sale with joint agents YPI Brokerage and Hoek.

Standing at 44m long with an astonishing overhang of 17m, Lionheart is the largest J-Class in the world. YPI Brokerage, the sales and new construction division of the Monaco based Yachting Partners International, have signed Lionheart for sale alongside Hoek Brokerage.

William Bishop, YPI broker and head of the YPI sailing division, said “This is an amazing moment … Lionheart is quite simply stunning. Anyone who loves sailing is already aware of the philosophy, the history, the technology and the passion that has gone into the construction of Lionheart. That’s what makes this the beginning of a whole new era of J-Class yachting.”

Built to compete at the highest level, Lionheart was originally designed for the Ranger Syndicate by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens in 1936. Her design was then extensively evaluated and optimised by the Hoek Naval Architects to ensure the highest quality of racing.

“And she is just as much designed for cruising as she is racing,” Will points out. “She has been built to MCA Classification and incorporates two small deckhouses and two small cockpits for the owner and his/her guests – that gives extra versatility on how the yacht can be used whether racing or cruising.”

Alongside her expert construction, her racing capabilities benefitted from the wealth of experience added to the project by Hall Spars in the building of her spars as well as utilising Harkens proven Carbon winches.

We’ve been sailing the brand new J Class Lionheart off Majorca recently and the signs are she’s fast although without her racing sails and another J alongside there was no opportunity to undertake the acid test.

But on Monday we managed to top l3.7 knots in a healthy 25 knots of true breeze off the west coast of Majorca. The 44m metre J has just launched from Claasen Jachtbouw in Holland and was on her way to the Monaco Yacht Show where she will be exhibited from the 22-25 September.

Lionheart is the first modern J to be built based on plans of a yacht that was never actually built. When Ranger was designed in the 1930s tank test models were used to determine performance and Model C was eventually chosen from the Starling Burgess/Olin Stephens variations.

Lionheart is based on Model F and Andre Hoek’s office has developed the lines to suit the modern rule. Hoek looked at all the J designs and using a special velocity prediction programme established Ranger Model F as potentially the fastest of all the Js.

We’ll be looking at this great looking yacht in more detail in an upcoming issue.

The Dutch owner of Lionheart at the helm on a broad reach off the west coast of Palma on Tuesday. The breeze topped out at about 25 knots true and the yacht managed just over 13 knots with a full main and a working jib, both cut for cruising.

Lionheart’s Australian mate Jake Foale tends to a runner while skipper Toby Brand gets to grips with the big J as she reaches at 11-12 knots off Majorca on Monday.

Cruising J Class style! With just six crew Lionheat even at 160 tons and 44 metres overall was surprisingly easy to handle in a reasonable breeze. We sailed with no lifelines or stanchions (for the publicity shots!) but they can be fitted in about 30 minutes.

We really didn’t want it to end this way….but as we hardened up on the breeze and Lionheart punched into the first few waves the Spectra tack line gave way and the jib was left thrashing around connected by head and clew alone. It took a bit of fighting to get it to the deck with no injuries and minimal damage. Early days of working up a big yacht.

Legendary 36m J Class sailing yacht Shamrock V relaunched

The 1930s America's Cup challenger Shamrock V – also known as "The Queen of the J Class" – was relaunched today at Saxon Wharf in Southampton, UK (20 May). This follows the most comprehensive restoration and rebuild in her 94-year history. 

The 36.4-metre sailing yacht sustained significant structural damage and was laid up ashore while racing at the America's Cup in 2017. Following a change of owner and a strip down "literally to the last bolt", the sailing yacht has been restored to concours condition after seven years.

The yacht hit the water at Camper & Nicholsons’ Gosport shipyard in 1930 as the first ever J Class, commissioned by Sir Thomas Lipton as his fifth and final challenge for the America's Cup. She remains the only one built in wood and the only one to have never fallen into dereliction since her launch – the other two remaining members of the J Class fleet, the 38.5-metre Velsheda and the 39.6-metre Endeavour , had to be reconstructed entirely.

Shamrock V will now be re-masted and undergo sea trials, commissioning, sail testing and race training. She is scheduled to move to the Mediterranean in July, when she will take part in some "informal events" in preparation for the America's Cup in October.

In modern race configuration, Shamrock carries over 743.2 square metres of sail and suits from North and Doyle. She will have a permanent crew of nine and will race with up to 45 crew dependent on wind and conditions.

Paul Spooner, who led the project team alongside Feargus Bryan, said: "It has been a massive undertaking and a huge privilege to unite extraordinary talents across the classic and superyacht communities. We were very fortunate to have a committed and knowledgeable owner who enabled us to fully and correctly restore this vital part of yachting history and prepare her for her next 100 years."

Chief shipwright, Giles Brotherton added: "It is very rare to be able to work on a revival of this scale and ambition. Some of our artisans were using hand tools that were used on Shamrock’s original build.  It is without doubt the biggest and arguably the most important yacht restoration in the world today."

Last year, BOAT International was invited to Southampton to see the refit in action.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
