List Of Rolex Watches Discontinued At Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024 Including Every Yacht-Master II

As always, new Rolex releases bring the quiet discontinuation of Rolex watches, and Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024 is no different. Here’s a quick look at the watches Rolex discontinued from April 09, 2024.

Rolex Daytona Le Mans 126529LN

One of the most collectible and rare Rolex watches right from the moment when it was released in June 2023 , the Rolex Daytona “Le Mans” reference 126529LN was always destined to be unobtainable for the overwhelming majority of VIP customers of the brand. In a rather shocking development, Rolex drops it from its collection after less than a year, as the Rolex Daytona Le Mans was in production just from June 2023 until April 2024. Basically, it is a Daytona in 18k white gold with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel with a red “100” marker in honor of the centenary of Le Mans. In other words, the Rolex 126529LN was produced just for the centenary of this legendary race, and no longer. It is back in 18k yellow gold for 2024.

Rolex Datejust 36 126200 & 126233 With A Palm Dial & Fluted Dial

The Rolex Datejust 36 reference 126200 with so-called Palm dials and Fluted dials also got the axe for 2024. These laser-etched dials were beautifully made as they displayed depth and fascinating light-plays between their bright and dark surfaces. They well and truly were a tour de force of Rolex’s in-house manufacturing know-how, and are discontinued after just 3 years in production for the Rolex Datejust 36 Palm dials and Rolex Datejust 36 Fluted dials.

The Entire Rolex Yacht-Master II Collection

It is extremely rare for Rolex to drop an entire collection, and such a development is all the more surprising for a watch fitted with an expensively developed, fully bespoke movement. The Rolex Yacht-Master II is such a watch, as its Rolex 4161 caliber with its programmable countdown regatta chronograph operated through a crown, two pushers, and a Ring Command is as quirky as they could ever get not just in the world of Rolex, but in the world of luxury watchmaking in general. This is to say that we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yacht-Master II or its 4161 caliber return at some point. The Yacht-Master II was updated a few years ago with the Rolex “Professional” style handset replacing the straight hands that debuted on the piece in 2007, but the collection was otherwise left largely untouched by Rolex, other than dropping the 18k white gold reference 116689 in 2022.

These are the most important and notable discontinuation news of Rolex watches for 2024. We will keep our eyes out for others that might have slipped through, but Rolex axing the laser-etched dials on the Datejust 36, dropping the Yacht-Master II collection in its entirety, and producing the Rolex Daytona “Le Mans” for such a brief period in the brand’s history is big news for 2024. Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

CAPTAIN - Harry Fotopoulos Captain Harry is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy and holds a Captain Class A’ Diploma. He also holds a Canadian Commercial Pilot license class B, sailing and speedboat license. He has over 15 years of experience onboard many types of Charter Yachts. He holds Certificates in GMDSS, Fire Fighting & First Aid, Personal Safety, Life Saving, and Ship Security. He has a great knowledge of the Greek islands and will navigate guests to remarkable destinations. During his one season on board he showed great leadership skills and received positive feedback from all guests. He is calm yet very outgoing and speaks very good English. DECKHAND - Konstantinos Santas CHIEF STEWARDESS - Mirella Davint Mirella has 8+ years of experience as a stewardess onboard charter and private yachts. She has a very pleasant personality and she aims to accommodate her guests to the fullest. Comments received from previous guests are memorable. This will be Mirella’s eighth season onboard. Mirella speaks English and she is 38 years old. ENGINEER - Stelios Mandos Stelios holds an Engineer Class B’ Diploma from the Greek Merchant Marine Academy as well as a Sailor’s License. He has over 15 years of experience onboard Ocean-Going Vessels and Charter Yachts. His hobbies include spearfishing and sailing. He speaks good English. Stelios is 45 years old, married with two children. CHEF - Thanasis Kiritsis Thanasis is 39 years old and has worked as a chef for more than 20 years in numerous hotels restaurants, yachts and resorts including owning his own pastry shop / bakery for 5 years. Thanasis looks forward to welcoming his guests on board and introducing them to his culinary world. He speaks good English and Greek. He is a young chef full of energy, skills and passion towards his job. We are confident that he will serve his guests unforgettable flavors. ASSISTANT STEWARDESS - Anastasia Yurash Anastasia is 31 years old and has been in the yachting industry since 2021. Her working experience includes 7 years as a housekeeper and assistant stewardess. Anastasia speaks very good English. One of Anastasia’s strongest attributes is her appetite for work. She is also very sociable, welcoming and looks forward to having guests on board S/Y Amadeus. Her hobbies include Latin dancing, snowboard and yoga.

A General Description of Sailing Yacht AMADEUS

AMADEUS was previously registered as project/yacht name Amadeus 1er. This 33 metre (109 ft) luxury yacht was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1991. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS is a well proportioned superyacht. The yacht is a modern sloop with a cutter rig. The naval architecture office whom authored the design work on this ship was Philippe Briand. Luxury yacht AMADEUS is a quality yacht that is able to accommodate as many as 12 guests on board and has a total of 5 crew members.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS was built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard .The yacht features superb sailing characteristics which are complimented by her spacious interior and abundant deck space. Sailing sloop AMADEUS can accommodate 10 passengers in five cabins. With one large master stateroom and four additional cabins which are all air conditioned and have en suite bathrooms. She also has two separate salons and a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered with seating. The fore deck has an unique pool on deck and swimming in the sea is made accessible by a large swim aft platform.

The Construction & Naval Architecture relating to Luxury Yacht AMADEUS

Philippe Briand was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical design work for AMADEUS. Also the company Philippe Briand skillfully collaborated on this undertaking. In 1991 she was actually launched to triumph in Marans and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the yacht owner. Dynamique Yachts completed their new build sailing yacht in France. A reasonable proportion is brought about with a maximum beam (width) of 7.5 metres / 24.6 feet. With a 3.6m (11.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material composite was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built with the use of composite. Over the deck of AMADEUS she is 32.7 (107.3 ft) in length. In 2004 extra refitting and modernisation was also finished.

Engines & Speed For S/Y AMADEUS:

She is driven by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship gives 375 horse power (or 276 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the boat is therefore 750 HP / 552 KW.

On board Superyacht AMADEUS She has The Following Guest Accommodation Format:

Bestowing bedding for a maximum of 12 yacht guests sleeping aboard, the AMADEUS accommodates them in style. Normally the vessel requires approximately 5 professional crewmembers to run.

Her master cabin features a walk around king bed, desk/vanity, and en-suite bathroom. Additionally, there are two guest cabins each with a queen bed convertible to two twins, and two guest cabins each with a queen bed and twin bed. Each guest cabin has an en-suite.

Her main salon has a spacious, contoured conversational area, along with a large, flatscreen T.V. The aft deck features al fresco dining with Bimini top. Up on deck there are sun pads and a splash pool for you and your guests to enjoy.

Watersports offered include a 15 foot tender with 75hp engine, water skis for adults and children, tube, wakeboard, kayak, fishing gear, snorkeling gear, and rendezvous diving.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS is a stunning 110 ft yacht available for charter in Greece. With a clean, spacious teak deck and a unique outdoor saloon that can seat up to 12 guests across two tables, it’s the perfect place for outdoor dining and entertainment. The deck saloon can also be enclosed with a special canopy and roll-up windows, making it suitable for use in all weather conditions. At the front of the boat, there’s a splash pool and sunbathing area with a removable awning for shade.

Inside the boat, a staircase from the cockpit leads to a well-lit and roomy saloon area with plenty of seating, including a formal dining area, bar, LCD TV, entertainment center, iPod dock station, and Playstation. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS can accommodate 10-12 guests in five large cabins, including a full-width master stateroom and two double cabins, each with an extra single bed. The two twin cabins can also be converted to doubles upon request, making her the only sailboat on the Greek market with five double beds.

To add to the fun, sailing yacht AMADEUS also comes with a range of water toys, including adult and children’s water skis, tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod, and snorkeling gear. She was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1996 and underwent a refit in 2014/2018.

Accomodation is offered for 10 -12 guests in 5 spacious cabins: Master cabin forward features a double bed, vanity unit and generous storage facilities, as well as audio/visual entertainment. The en-suite includess a large bath tub, shower and separate WC. Two identical double cabins with additional single bunks situated forward. Two identical double cabins situated aft which can be convertible to twins. (Total 5 double beds) All cabins with en suite facilities and audio/visual entertainment.

A professional crew of 5-6 members are accommodated in separate quarters.

Charter the AMADEUS

AMADEUS is a 110-foot sailing yacht that can accommodate ten to twelve passengers in five staterooms as follows: a spacious Owner’s stateroom with a double bed, a vanity and an entertainment unit including TV, DVD and music system; two cabins with a double bed and an additional single bed; two cabins with two twin beds each. All staterooms have en suite bathrooms, a TV, DVD and CD player. There are two separate salons onboard as well as a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered and has seating for all guests to dine in the open air. Forward of the cockpit is a lovely cushioned area for sunning and an unusual pool is found in the fore of the yacht. Swimming in the sea is made accessible by the large swim aft platform.

Built in 2008, Amadeus offers guest accommodation for up to 6 guests in 3 suites comprising a master suite, one VIP cabin and one twin cabin. There are 4 beds in total, including 1 queen, 1 double and 2 singles. She is also capable of carrying up to 2 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Whatever your activities on your charter, you'll find some impressive features are seamlessly integrated to help you, notably Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to stay connected at all times, should you wish. Guests will experience complete comfort while chartering thanks to air conditioning.

Rolex gold is an intrinsic part of the Yacht-Master’s identity: 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold are comprised of 750‰ pure gold and blends of silver, copper and palladium. They are all entirely created and cast in our own foundry.

The Yacht-Master in 18 ct Everose gold is available in two diameters: 37 mm and 40 mm. Each of these versions is also available with a diamond-paved dial. The 18 ct yellow gold and 18 ct white gold versions are reserved for the Yacht-Master 42.

Rolex gold is also combined with Oystersteel – a particularly corrosion-resistant alloy – for the Everose Rolesor versions of the Yacht-Master 37 and Yacht-Master 40. They combine a bezel and centre links in Everose gold with a middle case, winding crown, case back and outer links in Oystersteel.

The Yacht-Master 37 and the Yacht-Master 40 are also available in Rolesium versions, an alliance of platinum and steel. They combine a platinum bezel with a middle case, winding crown, case back and bracelet in Oystersteel.

RLX titanium Robustness and lightness

RLX titanium made its first appearance in the Yacht-Master range in 2023. The grade 5 titanium alloy selected by Rolex is a particularly lightweight metal and is noted for its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Its use for the Yacht-Master 42’s case and bracelet has reduced the weight of the watch by around a third compared to a similar watch in steel. RLX titanium is complex to work with and has required the introduction of special production processes.

The combination of polished, high-sheen and technical satin finishes illustrates our excellence in machining and finishing techniques. Together, they produce a subtle blend of textures and light, setting off the gleaming polished surface of the crown guard and the lustrous high-sheen on the top edges of the lugs against the matt of the technical satin finishing – with its pronounced grain – visible on the rest of the case and bracelet.

In Costa Rica, you can do hundreds of different tours. Of course, some activities require an expert guide, like waterfall rappelling, zip lining, or whitewater rafting. But what about things like national park hikes and hanging bridges? Is it beneficial to have a guide for these activities? In this post, we’ll let you know what it takes to become a tour guide in Costa Rica and when it’s good idea to hire one.

Tour Guides in Costa Rica

Licensing/certification.

Before we get into the specifics of when it is helpful to hire a guide, we’ll first explain about how guides become certified in Costa Rica. It’s a longer, more involved process than many people realize.

In Costa Rica, the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (Tourism Institute, or ICT for short) certifies guides. There are different types of certifications you can apply for. These include general guide, local guide (specific to one geographic area), adventure guide, and naturalist guide.

To be a general guide, you have to meet several requirements . Most notable is that you must complete a 1,000+ hour tourism course. This ensures knowledge of Costa Rica’s geography, natural history, cultural heritage, and ancient and contemporary history. The course also covers important basics like customer service, English proficiency, and safety (CPR and high-level First Aid).

General guides also need to have their paperwork in order. They must be paying taxes and contribute to the country’s socialized health care system.

Local guides and naturalist guides have similar requirements. To have the naturalist guide designation, you first need to become a general or local guide. Then you need to take additional, specialized courses . These include biology, ornithology, herpetology, botany, and geology. Or, you can show an equivalent educational background. Time is spent both in the classroom and through field work.

Using ICT-Certified Guides

If you hire an ICT-certified guide who has gone through this fairly long process, chances are, they will be good. They will have a solid educational background, be trained in tourism, and have an eagerness to teach visitors about their country.

Guides/Companies Without Certification

ICT certification is not legally required in Costa Rica. Because of this, there are plenty of tour companies/guides operating more informally. While some do have relevant educational background, others do not. This can be a problem at busier national parks, like Manuel Antonio National Park.

This is why it is important to do some research on the guide/company you plan to hire. You can get a lot from reviews online. Checking out a tour company’s website or TripAdvisor page will provide insight into if they seem like a serious business.

If the guide is ICT certified, that is even better. Then you know that they have gone through the formal process of becoming a guide.

Note that just because a guide is not ICT certified doesn’t automatically mean that he or she isn’t reputable. There are other organizations that have learning programs (e.g., Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje (National Learning Institute); Instituto Costarricense de Educación Turística (Institute of Education for Tourism)). These people may still have a lot of knowledge but not gone through the formal process. Just be a little extra careful when vetting a guide that isn’t ICT certified before using one.

When to Hire a Naturalist Guide

For expertise.

Now that you know that a lot goes into becoming a guide in Costa Rica, you can appreciate more why they would be beneficial.

Not only is a good guide able to teach you about the local flora and fauna you will encounter, but they are able to spot more than you can with their trained eye. They often come with equipment as well, like binoculars or powerful scopes. These let you spot birds and animals hiding high in the treetop canopy.

Another way that guides are useful is by giving background on the place you are visiting. Since most national parks in Costa Rica don’t have much, if any, information along the trail, it can be nice to have a local expert.

For example, on a volcano hike in the Arenal area, a guide can teach you about the prior eruptions. Many guides are locals in the area where they do tours, so they would be talking about their own backyard. For Arenal Volcano, they might be able to share interesting tidbits on how nearby communities were affected by past eruptions and what has changed since then.

Guides are also really useful when you want to see a specific animal. Some people come to Costa Rica wanting to see a sloth, for example, so hiring a guide can help make sure that happens.

In Specific Areas

In some areas of Costa Rica, having a guide lead the way can be essential. Here are some specific places where we recommend hiring a guide.

In the cloud forests of Monteverde , naturalist guides can add a lot of value. Although this is a very biodiverse area with hundreds of different birds and animals living in its dense forests, spotting wildlife can be tough. Birds and animals are often hiding in the canopy, camouflaged in the foliage, or obscured by cloud cover. A guide will know where to look, and at the same time, teach you some interesting facts about the cloud forest.

Similarly, in San Gerardo de Dota , a guide is essential to spotting the bird that most people come to see, a Resplendent Quetzal. Local guides know where these illusive creatures are nesting or feeding on any given day. This almost guarantees a sighting during prime viewing season.

The tropical dry forest found in the northwestern part of the country in Guanacaste is another region where a guide can be helpful. Hikes to places like Rincon de la Vieja Volcano or Miravalles Volcano  can be much more interesting with a guide. They’ll teach you about the geology of the volcanoes and different volcanic features.

These are just a few regions where it can be especially difficult to see wildlife on your own. However, a good naturalist guide can really add value even in places where wildlife is easy to see.

A good example is Manuel Antonio National Park . Although this park has a ton of visible wildlife, we have still enjoyed doing a guided tour of this park ourselves. This is even after living in Costa Rica for many years and visiting this park many times.

On a guided tour a couple of years ago, our naturalist guide taught us some fascinating facts about hornets. These hornets were in a crazy formation on the outside of their nest, and he explained all about it. We also got to see a sleeping red-eyed tree frog! We definitely would have walked right by that frog if it hadn’t been for our guide spotting him on the underside of a broad leaf.

In one place, it is even necessary to hire a guide by law. Because Corcovado National Park is so remote, a guide is required to enter both on day visits and overnights. This is for safety reasons.

When Not to Hire a Guide

In some cases, guides are not always necessary. If you’re familiar with the area and just want to explore at your own pace, you can still enjoy a hike by yourself.

To see the most on your own, we always recommend arriving as early as possible since wildlife is most active during the morning hours. Late afternoon can be a great time too, especially for birds. Wildlife tends to become more active in the late afternoon, when it is moving around to feed before dark.

Another tip is to walk slowly and keep your eyes peeled. Howler and spider monkeys are often sleeping high up in the canopy during the daytime, so it can be easy to walk right past them. At ground level, you can often see frogs or cool bugs camouflaged in the leaves or soil if you look carefully.

Another piece of advice is to take one or two guided tours towards the beginning of your trip and do more self-guided ones later. A guide will not only share specific information about the birds, animals, and plants you’re observing, but also will help teach you how to find these things on your own. This will get you ready for the rest of your visit as you explore other parts of the country.

Since abolishing the army in 1948, Costa Rica has become known as a peaceful oasis in the midst of a turbulent region. Active volcanos, exotic wildlife, lush rainforests, and sandy beaches are just a few of the reasons Costa Rica has become a popular destination. The Ticos (native Costa Ricans), however, are the reason people decide to stay. Friendly and full of life, Pura Vida (pure/full life) is at the very core of Costa Rica. Learn to enjoy each moment, eat abundant amounts of gallo pinto (rice and beans), and earn a living working abroad in Costa Rica, whether teaching English, working in tourism, or joining the conservation efforts saving the pride of Costa Rica, their diverse ecology.

San José is the location for you if you enjoy working in the bustle of urban life. San José is the capital city and where the majority of jobs in Costa Rica can be found. San José offers several museums, cafes, schools, and tourist attractions. It is a hub for teaching , tourism, and call center job opportunities in Costa Rica. Its central location in Costa Rica makes it an ideal jumping-off spot for weekend excursions. In fact, there is nowhere in the country that is more than a nine hour drive away from San José.

Valle Central is the mountainous area surrounding San José, and where the majority of Ticos live (two-thirds of the population) and they often commute to work in the big city. While San José is known for being crowded, chaotic, and the epitome of urban, the surrounding terrain is full of parks and some of the most pristine natural areas in Costa Rica. Costa Rica’s biggest exports are coffee and bananas, much of which is grown in the agriculturally rich Valle Central.

Guanacaste is the perfect location for those looking to work in environmental jobs. Guanacaste is home to the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica and numerous national refuges, which protect historical and biological sites and species, including the largest tropical dry forest in Central America. Turtle and other conservation efforts are abundant along the pacific coast of Guanacaste.

Limon sits on the opposite side of the country, the Caribbean coastal province is full of conservation employment opportunities. Mountain ranges, thick rainforests, several wildlife refuges, and indigenous reserves dot the Caribbean coast, including the ecologically diverse Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre, Barra del Colorado, and Parque Nacional Tortuguero, and more.

Primary education in Costa Rica is both free and compulsory so the number of educated and qualified natives is extensive. In fact, the literacy rate in Costa Rica is the highest in Central America. This often makes jobs in Costa Rica difficult for foreigners to to find outside of the following select fields.

Teaching English. Since education is so important, and tourism is the biggest revenue source, this is the most common job in Costa Rica available to foreigners. You must be fluent or often a native English speaker in order to teach English in Costa Rica, and a TEFL/TESOL certification, bachelor’s degree, and up to three years of experience may be required. English teaching jobs are available all across Costa Rica, and there are some programs that offer in-country certification. Teaching jobs generally require a six to 18 month commitment.

Tourism is extremely important and prominent throughout Costa Rica, creating a variety of job openings for foreigners. Waiting tables, bartending, or guiding tours in resort towns are the most common jobs in Costa Rica in the tourism industry. A proper educational background and bilingual abilities make even more opportunities available.

Environmental & Conservation Work. Its peaceful reputation and pura vida lifestyle aren’t the only things that attract tourists to Costa Rica; it is incredibly biodiverse and has the highest number of species per square kilometer in the world (an astonishing 615). Costa Ricans are very passionate about their green landscape, a quarter of which is protected by their constitution making environmental and conservation work high-demand fields where foreigners can find jobs in Costa Rica. Environmental jobs in Costa Rica often revolve around the seasons. Turtle conservation, for example, is a controversial but extremely important effort currently in Costa Rica, but the workload can experience a lull from November to February when the turtles are not nesting.

Despite the slow pace of the Tico lifestyle, punctuality is expected in the business world. A formal handshake is appropriate when meeting colleagues, though close friends may greet one another with a kiss on the cheek.

Basic Spanish is preferred but not always required. There are some job opportunities in Costa Rica, especially in the tourism field, that require being bilingual or will only accept foreign applicants from certain countries. 

Although prices in Costa Rica are lower than in the U.S. or Europe, you won’t get rich working abroad in Costa Rica, if you spend wisely you can cover the cost of living while having enough leftover to explore on weekends and holidays. You can generally expect to earn $500 to $800 per month teaching English abroad in Costa Rica. There are a few exceptions that offer as much as $1800 per month for experienced teachers, but it is not the norm. Salaries in the tourism sector are largely dependent on educational background or experience and can range from $200 to $2,000 per month. Basic environmental work positions are often filled by willing, ambitious volunteers or unpaid interns, so specialization and education will be useful in finding paid employment.

Prices in Costa Rica are significantly higher than other Central American countries, especially in the more touristy areas and during the dry season and holidays. On average, you can expect to pay $300 to 800 per month for a furnished apartment, depending on your personal preference, $150 to $200 per month on groceries, and around $100 per month for entertainment. A typical lunch can cost around $5 to $10, however sodas offer cheap local food-counter-style stops where you can get yummy authentic meals for less than $3. Tipping is customary for some services, such as housekeeping and tour guides. A ten percent tip is automatically added to restaurant bills, but if it is not, you may choose to leave a small tip to show appreciation.

While the colón is the national currency, U.S. dollars are accepted most places as a result of the high tourism in Costa Rica. Regardless, local meals (like at sodas), bus fares, and other small items should still be paid in Colones. 

To legally work in Costa Rica, you must obtain a work permit. Applying for a work permit is extensive and can take up to or over 90 days to be approved. Therefore, it is recommended to start the process early! Since you must be a resident to apply, the first step is to apply for temporary residency in Costa Rica. Next, you should start gathering the required forms and materials needed to apply for the permit. This includes: a payment, two passport size photographs, a receipt of fingerprint registration, your birth certificate and criminal record, copies of your passport, a statement from your employing company, various legal documents from the company, and a letter explaining why you are applying for the work permit. While the majority of jobs in Costa Rica for foreigners will be contracted in-country, one way to significantly ease the work permit process is to get hired by a multinational company who will transfer you to be based in Costa Rica.

Accommodation will vary based upon your job and location. TEFL/TESOL programs that offer in-country certification prior to job placement will often provide housing in homestays with local Ticos. This is especially common in San José. Hostels are an inexpensive option when traveling around, but may not be the most realistic if living and working in Costa Rica long-term. Most employers will expect you to find your own place to stay in houses or apartments around town. Tourism and seasonal jobs are the most common exception. 

• Pura Vida. Pura Vida is the common response to the question “how are you?” and is extremely evident in the everyday life of the Ticos. Costa Rican’s are happy to share what they have, opening their homes, hearts and favorite surfing spots to friendly visitors. Living in Costa Rica is a great reminder to slow down and gain perspective in stressful situations. 
• Lengthy Process. Although Costa Rica is an incredible place to travel, it can be a difficult place to get a job abroad. The process of finding a job, getting a work visa, and earning a living wage can be long and discouraging. It’s not easy, but like most things that take work, it’s worth it.
• Very Wet. Working in Costa Rica during the rainy season (May through November) is not for the faint-hearted. Investing in a quality rain jacket, boots, and pura vida attitude however, can dispel any rainy day blues!
• Communicating. Costa Ricans value relationships and harmony, and communicate in a non-confrontational, non-committal style. It is best to avoid pressure or conflict during negotiation, and it is considered extremely rude to raise your voice in public.

We’ve compiled this travel guide for Costa Rica to help you get started with one of the most exciting yet challenging countries in the world. If you’re ready to push your limits you’re in the right place. 1. Conserve Sea Turtles on the Pacific Coast Costa Rica is one of the prime nesting places for sea turtles. Travelling for thousands of miles, female turtles lay their eggs on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica every year. Volunteers can join the beach patrol to help find the hatcheries so they can be protected for conservation and research purposes. If you’re there to work and travel in Costa Rica at the right time you can also participate in the baby turtle release programmes, which ensure that as many hatchlings as possible make it across the beach to the ocean without being harassed by predators. 2. Marine Protection in Puntarenas On the Gulf of Nicoya this popular backpacking destination is famed for its huge amount of marine life. Help protect an array of pelicans, crocodiles, and sharks with a marine conservation programme there as you work in Costa Rica. You’ll help the professionals provide education for the protection of marine life, patrolling the beaches, collecting eggs, and research into some of the least understood species on Earth. And you don’t need any prior qualifications to get involved in a project like this. 3. Care for Abandoned Children in San Jose The capital, unfortunately, has a big problem with street kids. Hundreds, if not thousands, of abandoned children need your help. These volunteer initiatives help care for abandoned children by providing them with a safe and educational atmosphere so they can put the past behind them. You’ll help with feeding them, cleaning, and playing games. Volunteers often help them with their reading and writing skills to give them the tools they need to build a positive, healthy life for themselves as they grow up.

VOLUNTEER WORK VISA / PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR COSTA RICA

Costa Rica embraces the ‘Pura Vida’ philosophy when it comes to visa requirements for foreigners who want to come to the country. You’re able to enter the country for 90 days with only a valid return ticket required if you come from any developed country. This applies to citizens of the UK, the European Union (EU), North America, South Africa, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. You should bear in mind that Costa Rica does not fall under the CA-4 Agreement, so you don’t have to worry about spending as much time as possible here whilst compromising your ability to stay in the other Central American countries. There are also no difficulties with securing a volunteer position here. You don’t have to deal with any complex regulations to be able to work and travel in Costa Rica.

SEASONAL BACKPACKER SKILLS NEEDED IN COSTA RICA

Spring work.

Between March and April are some of the hottest months of the year. To avoid excess humidity you should avoid the coastlines and head to a major city like San Jose. Looking after abandoned children or teaching English is highly recommended throughout the spring season.

SUMMER JOBS

The summertime is the dry season in Costa Rica. This is also when the bulk of Western tourists pour into the country. Volunteer projects ramp up their efforts at this time of year to take advantage of backpackers travelling in Costa Rica. It’s also the most desirable time to head to the coastline. At this time of year surfing and diving instructors are much needed to take on the additional work. You don’t need to have qualifications prior to arriving in the country as you can obtain your qualifications there. The more qualified you are the more likely it is that you’ll find some paying work. For paying work, your best option is to go to the Pacific Coast. The Atlantic Coast does have opportunities, but this area is far less popular.

The start of autumn is a continuation of the dry season. All the roles detailed in the previous section will still be available. If you want to get away from the tourist areas as you work and travel in Costa Rica you should head inland and consider a homestay. For many families, this is a busy time as they begin to harvest before the rainy season comes around. You’ll get an authentic taste of how real Costa Ricans live. Many travellers also take the chance to combine their homestay with a Spanish immersion experience.

In winter it’s the rainy season. There are tourists, but not on the same scale as summer. The best available seasonal work is English teaching work in one of the major urban areas like San Jose. It’s the preferred option for volunteering opportunities in Costa Rica as nobody likes to work out in the rain. And in Costa Rica the rain can get extremely heavy. If you don’t want to teach English in Costa Rica you may consider getting involved in education programmes. There are initiatives on offer to provide education to street kids and other underprivileged groups. There are no requirements to be a professional teacher either.

ATTITUDE TO FOREIGNERS WORKING OR VOLUNTEERING IN COSTA RICA

Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Central America. It’s why so many foreigners have decided to move to the country permanently. Crime levels are about the same as in any Western country and violence against tourists is extremely rare. You do have to put up with the touts and the various scammers that inhabit the main backpacking destinations, but a firm ‘no’ is normally enough to stop them from bothering you. In short, an incredible experience awaits you if you want to work and travel in Costa Rica. Are you ready to embark upon your tropical adventure?

Costa Rica is a beautiful country. I would highly recommend going there but can't recommend the tour. The accommodation is not just basic: Most of the hotels were dirty and one of the hotels even had flees in the blankets. Our guide did what was required of her. The tour lacked a clear structure for the extra activities.

The tour of Tortuguero was a pleasant surprise. Andrea gave us a personal experience, she is knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife of Costa Rica. We saw so much wildlife on our boat and walking tours. The experience that we had on this tour was great from start to finish and I highly recommend this tour for anyone that enjoys nature.

I really enjoyed Costa Rica and the locations this tour visited. The group aspect was great to meet people and also be safer when exploring. I’d recommend a tour with more activities included, once you add the cost of these in, this tour ends up being more costly than others. Hotels varied in quality with the last 3 days being a 6 sharer, 1 hot shower in 10 days.

Laura was a good tour leader. She always put recommendations in the chat when we arrived at a new place. And also suggested different activities we could do. Favourite experience was probably the zip lining in monteverde, definitely very fun and memorable.

Interesting and educational trip.

Itinerary, transport, hotels and activities were all excellent, we loved the whole experience and got a really good taster of what Costa Rica has to offer. The country is beautiful and it was great to see the diversity of the different coasts and beaches, volcano, waterfalls and cloud forest. The only suggestion I have for improvement would be for better communications; we did not receive our itinerary and details until after we had left home to catch our flights, which was a little concerning. Also the confirmation of itinerary lacked detail of activities and how long they would last. This meant that we were unable to plan extra activities as we had no idea what time we would be transported back from the organised tours. If we’d had been given clearer information with a bit more notice, then our rating would have 5 star! Overall this is a great way to see a lot of Costa Rica for a reasonable cost and we would thoroughly recommend it.

Retired and excited to spend our time traveling. Booked our first ever tour with Trafalgar, through Costco. Expected that it would be the first of very many. I will never consider Trafalgar again. Hideous customer service!!! First our trip was cancelled due to Covid - hey I get it - but no refund, just a voucher. Again, very unusual situation, so cut them some slack. Communication sucked, but rebooked for this year. A month out, Trafalgar emails me that they are cancelling just our trip date - for unexplained reasons. This time instead of a credit they say we can finally get a refund. So generous for this massive corporation that has now had my money for two years. HERE'S the kicker - they expect it to take THREE MONTHS to process my refund. WHAT??? I'm sorry, this is totally unacceptable. Used my money for two years and now need three MORE months to refund it. Oh, and if you want to talk to someone to check on your refund, count on 2 hours on hold. SEE YA. I WILL NEVER CONSIDER THEM FOR FUTURE TRAVEL AND WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW ABOUT THEIR CRAPPY SERVICE.

It was a good solo travel trip. BUT plan ahead. INDUS drops you off at hotel and then you are on your own in SAN Jose. We did get a map museums were closed on MOnday. research things to do, It can be extremely helpful to start researching your destination before you travel. Find out information about the city you are traveling to along with the area you will be staying in, so you can discover which stores and restaurants will be close by, get to know your way around the neighborhood, and familiarize yourself with attractions you want to see. Your journey will go smoother if you come prepared with ideas — and it will be a fascinating experience to see them come to life! The shuttle drivers were usually on time. Sunday was a busy travel day from Manuel Antonio hotel Tabula tree back to SAN JOSE PARK INN so beware of that. bus driver was late due to traffic almost an hour.

Our tour director and bus driver were excellent. Our hotel in San Jose was excellent and the one in LA Fortuna very good. However the one in Monteverde was not so good. The beds were uncomfortable, there was no air conditioning and no fans. If this hotel was better my rating would have been 5 stars.

The tour itself was great however there were way too many people on the tour. When I booked it said a maximum of 20 people but there were 38 on the tour. This meant that there was always half of us that couldn't hear the guide or missed the wildlife. This was very upsetting to pay a lot of money to miss things that the other travelers were experiencing!!!

Costa Rica tour saver was really good! Make sure you get the transfer from airport San Jose, as I didn't get it and had to pay a stupid taxi fare to get to hotel. Otherwise hotels were all good, itinerary was good and varied, lots of animals to see. I did the beach extension and relaxed. Food was all great too. I'd recommend.

This was probably the worst tour I've taken. Costa Rica was wonderful, no thanks to the tour. To start, I was told the transfer from airport to hotel would be $50 per person so we opted to get to the hotel on our own. Got a call at the hotel that they had waited for us and couldn't understand why I wasn't there....because I didn't pay for it and wasn't told that it was included!! Next...the tour director, Victor, wasn't reliable. He would give the "company line" and then not follow through. Just one example: we were supposed to make name cards to be used to rotate seats on the bus...never happened! He never learned names, and never made you feel part of a group, so there was no group cohesiveness. The quality of the hotels was not great. They were second rate, cleanliness lacking and many in varying states of disrepair (old). The food was mediocre and I'm not a foodie but lack of variety and lack of hot food when supposed to be hot, or cold when supposed to be cold leaves one desiring more. Each hotel got progressively worse, including location so by the time we got to the end, we were in single beds with a very limited menu to choose from at every meal. The last part of the trip, which everyone referred to as "the beach" was not an "add on" but part f the tour. Yet the tour director did not travel to the beach with the group of twelve, but went back to San Jose to end his tour. Strange....not a problem for me because I have traveled quite a bit by myself, but what actually was I paying for if not for a director who would oversee and make sure things went smoothly, as you will see with the final transfer. Then there was the issue with our transfer from hotel to airport at the end. We were told 7:15 and were there the required 10 minutes early, only to find that another couple was told 7:40 (according to them and the front desk) and were on our same transport! When confronted, Swiss Travel (who apparently is the umbrella for Costsaver) said that the other couple were just late, so as I said to them...someone is untruthful!

Lovely vitas and fabulous guide Edudardo Lopez, but tour descriptors sometimes lacking in detail and level of strenuous activities was minimized. One accommodation was impossible to endure in Cahuita do to level of mildew and mould in rooms. Had to go to a different accommodation for those three nights -for 2 couples - at own cost ($400 US per couple). We would not unconditionally recommend Exodus Tours to anyone in future. The travel arrangements, accommodation, and food were excellent. The driver was excellent and the guide very good. I was with a lovely group of people. Unfortunately we had torrential rain at Arenal and Monteverde which meant that we got soaking wet and didn't see a lot. The other four locations were wonderful, particularly Savegre cloud forest. I would have loved to have stayed there another night and gone straight to the airport from there. I didn't particularly enjoy the farm visit and afterwards found myself covered in flea bites! Altogether though it was a great trip with beautiful birds and wonderful scenery.

I would 100% recommend this tour - a wonderful way to explore Costa Rica. Our guide was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the country and wildlife. The hotels all had amazing views from the balcony, there was a good mix of included and optional activities, the food was really tasty, and we had a really nice group of 8. Everything is well organised and explained clearly along the way - I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to experience the wildlife and different regions of Costa Rica - you'll learn and see a lot :)

As first time Intrepid travellers we weren’t sure how we would like the small group tour. We were so happy we decided to try it. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with unbelievable scenery and lovely people. But what really made this trip special was our tour guide. His passion and knowledge of not only the flora and fauna but the history of his country was so incredibly rich. I came away with such a great appreciation for what this small country has achieved. He made sure all of our fellow travellers felt comfortable and I think since we were all like minded we had a great time together. The excursions were fun and again educational.
