X-102 is a 32 ′ 10 ″ / 10 m monohull sailboat designed by Niels Jeppesen and built by X-Yachts between 1981 and 1986.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Danmarks Radio tv program 1982
X-Yatchts have been so kind and point us in the direction of the DR archives where we find a 30 minutes program from 1982 talking about export success of the X-102. The tv program is in Danish and there are not subtitles, but it is still fun to watch.
I dont have time to do a transcript of the program in english, but there are a couple of key takeaways from the program.
- Price in 1982 – 400.000 DKR which is equivalent to 1 million DKR in 2021
- 55 boats sold in 1982 only 3 i Denmark at the time of the program
- Turnover in 1982 in was 20. million Dkr equivalent to 54 million Dkr in 2021
- Build number 55 is featured in the start of program
- Major markets were Norway, Sweden and England
- The founders payout the first 3 years where 70.000 Dkr pr year
- Production was sourced to smaller companies to avoid build a huge administration, and reduce risk. They needed owner of the workshop of to be involved in the build to secure quality of work.
At the end of the program Niels Jeppesen sails together with Bjørn Olsen (Ship designer) responsible for Nimbus 30 amongst other, and a childhood inspiration to Niels. Bjørn is being asked about his opinion on the X-102, and repond “I like the more narrow design, and not wide body because we need to go upwind – pointing” he also thinks that IOR design rules was a risk due to the missing shaft in the hull. Niels was quite fast to respond “I have just participating in a regatta in Finland where we sailed in 20 meter pr sek reaching a speed of 17 know we need to man on the rudder to be able to control it. If the rudder can withstand that, it for sure is secure as a family cruiser.
You can click on the button below to see the TV show in full screen.
X-102 – 40 years in the making
2021 marks the 40 years anniversary of the X-102 which started to see light in 1981. The boat introduced a revolutionary design with a combined cruse racer for a a crew of 6, and quickly gained success on the race track as well a good tour boat for the family.
173 boats was built from 1981 to 1987 and it was sold and exported to many countries around the world, were it still is admired to this day, when it enters port, or is seen in its natural habitat of 6-8 meters pr sek in relative calm waters.
Text from X-Yatch own home page
The second X-Yachts model launched was a true cruiser/racer sporting a center cockpit. It was designed for IOR’s 3/4 Ton upper rating limit of 24.55ft. Hull 07, “Soldier Blue”, won the 3/4 Ton World Championship in 1981 and was skippered by Ib Ussing Andersen, helmed by Jens Christensen with tactics by Lars Bo Ive, all now of North Sails fame. In 1982 “Lille du” won the same title and gave X-Yachts a head start in the international yachting arena.
The Sea Round history – 1981
Soldier blue and Sponsor Wanted participated in Sealand Round in 1981, which is actually recorded in this video from the 1981 if you fast forward to 6:12 or 23:00 minutes in this video you will find a small clip of the boats competing against each other. Sponsor wanted was skippered by Niels Jeppesen, and soldier blue was skippered by Ib Ussing Andersen.
Sealand Round 1989 – 19 boats
I have received this list from Lars Olesen Larsen of the participating boats in Sealand round in 1989. He have have been so kind and share a bit of the history of the boat. It would we great if we could hear from any of the skippers who actually sailed in 1989, or current owners of the boat type.
X-Yachts 40 years anniversary 2019 – X-102
X-Yacht released this year book in connection with their 40 years anniversary, where they wrote the following on the reason for introducing the X-102.
Extract from the year book:
But the laurels were not for resting on. At the autumn exhibition in Copenhagen, the yard published the plans for the next model, a 10 metre long cruiser/racer with a central cockpit. The decision to develop the new boat was based on several factors: One reason was the desire to expand the “range”, just as Lars and Niels Jeppesen and Birger Hansen had concluded that it was difficult to sell the X-79 in all parts of Europe. New model in pipeline
The new boat, named X-102, was designed to the IOR ¾ Ton parameters, but was equipped with accommodation to make it family friendly. Launch was in the spring of 1981 to enable entry in the sailing races Fyn Rundt and Sjælland Rundt. This gave the opportunity to optimise the boat before the middle of July when it was entered in the official world championship in Helsingfors in Finland for boats with an IOR handicap not exceeding 24.55 ft, the upper limit of the ¾ Ton class.
The “old” guard X-102 ”Soldier Blue” participated and won the World Championship. The boat was captained by Ib Ussing Andersen and steered by Jens Christensen. They were both co-founders and co-owners of the newly established sail-making firm “Sejlmagerne”, later “Diamond Sailmakers”, which became the main driving force behind North Sails’ conquest of the world market for sails for the world’s largest and most exclusive ocean cruisers. The crew of the ”Soldier Blue” also included tactician Lars Ive, who had two years previously placed his J-24 second behind the X-79 at the Sjælland Rundt race. Lars and Niels Jeppesen also participated in the championship in another X-102, taking the seventh place.

Help us write the story
With 40 years in the making there must be lots of fun stories to tell about the history of the boat. I have done a bit of internet research, and I have seen fun videos of people sailing in narrow channels in Sweden, and people who say the have sailed single handed across the Atlantic in an X-102.
I would a appreciate your help to find these stories, so we can document for the benefit of the X-102 community.

Virtual skipper meeting number 1
Meeting summary from the first virtual skipper meeting
Participants: Kent Rosendal Karsten Normand Henrik Bo Christoffersen
We have had our first virual skipper meeting in the i X-102 community with participation of Kent, Karsten og Henrik. We have agreed to focus on 4 regattas next year, where we want to gather as many X-102 boats as possible.
The regattas are:
- Palby Cup i maj 28-30 Maj
- Gilleleje Cup i Juni 2 eller 12 juni
- Sjælland Rundt i juni 17-20 Juni
- Stelton Cup i oktober
Kent has promised to recruit some of the X-102 sailors around fyn for for the palby Cup regatta, and we expect to have at least 3 boats from sealand joining in may. Gilleleje Cup is a combined regatta an social activity, and is planned for either the 2 or the 12 of june.
The big event next year is sjælland rundt and season ends for the sailors in Øresund with Stelton Cup.
Summer Holiday: We discussed the possibility for a meet-up next year in july, but no plans were settled, but we agreed to share our vacation plans for the summer via facebook.
If we have any of the german or dutch sailors in nordic waters in july please let us know.
The tracking used under Stelton cup will be used to track the planned regattas next year, and if we are more than 5 boats we agreed to share the cost for the tracking for the period we use it. We have more than 500 page views on sunday during the regatta and about 100 unique users have checked in to see on-line or see the regatta the following days. Please sign up for a key via the website
Onyx from Sweden takes the grand price at Stelton Cup 2020
Onyx SWE40 wins Stelton Cup 2020 with a margin to 1 minute and 20 sec on corrected time, but only 40 seconds separated the two of them on elapsed time. The trailing 3 X-102 finished 40 minutes later in a tight competion for 3-4-5 place in the 18 nm track course. Onyx became overall number 5 out the 35 participating on racetrack 2. Who says a 40 year old design cant compete with the modern boat designs.
Onyx skippered by Pär Halléus is here seen with the grand price for the race, with the right to brag for for the coming 12 months.
The price is founded by the skipper of #oneXtoo René van Laer who handed over the price, and requested photo evidence of the price being displayed in a central place in his home. The 4 other skippers will check in on Pär on a regular basis the coming 12 months.
The regatta was sailed under extreme light wind conditions, which explains the big time difference between second and 3 place in the race. The picture below shows Obelix during the race just meters from Peciva
The picture above shows the tight race between Obelix of Xtase who passed the finish line as 4-5, after Peciva, but Xtase wins 3 price on corrected time.
Results from stelton cup 2020
The regatta was tracked using eStela
The Stelton Cup regatta is the last of season in Denmark for the keel boat class, and Peciva skippered by Henrik Bo sailed on back to port in the calm evening unlike the stormy conditions the day before with up 18 M/S sec.
See you in 2021
Follow Stelton Cup 2020 live on the website
For the first time on many year we have managed to gather five X-102 boats on a race track in Denmark. We are trying to take advantage of the latest technology, and we will be broadcasting live on the website.
The tracking will start 10 minutes prior to planned race start, and commence after 5 hours. the actual race track course will be updated Sunday morning, when we receive the official track course from the race committee.
See the tracking below
The 5 boats will be competing for the grand price of being “Øresundsmester” with the right to brag for the next 12 months.
The price is founded by the Skipper of #oneXtwo.

X-Yachts X-41 review: from the archive
- May 2, 2021
First of all, the X-Yachts X-41 is not simply a larger X-35.
The mainsheet is led under the side decks to the aft pair of cockpit winches. Credit: X-Yachts Credit: X-Yachts
Product Overview
Manufacturer:.
Although they are clearly from the same stable, Niels Jeppesen has given her a deep T-keel for stability.
But the X-Yachts X-41 carries a comparatively lower sail area than her sister.
The reason for this, according to Jeppesen, is that the X-Yachts X-35 was designed specifically to establish a class in the Mediterranean, requiring plenty of sail to cope with light conditions.
Choosing to market her as a one-design has also let X-Yachts fit her with all the toys as standard – carbon spars, wheel and some tidy line handling arrangements.
The deck layout of the X-Yachts X-41 rewards close scrutiny.
There’s an abundance of tweaks to be made, with barber haulers for the head sail and spinnaker sheets and powerful outhaul, cunningham and kicker purchases led to camcleats on both sides of the coach roof.
The mainsheet is led under the side decks to the aft pair of cockpit winches, avoiding any trip or chafe problems for crew sitting out.
A powerful traveller runs the full width of the cockpit within easy reach of the helm or the main trimmer.
Both mainsheet and traveller lines are continuous, the traveller line routed through small blocks clipped to the guard wires to keep it to hand.
Backstay adjustment is through X-Yachts’ patented Magic Wheel, as fitted to the IMX40, IMX45 and most recently the X-35.
This impressive system uses a huge drum below decks to provide most of the purchase, allowing rapid backstay adjustment simply by pulling a lot of line.
It’s tidy and quicker than hydraulics and is routed conveniently through a small tube which emerges just below the centre of the traveller.
The innovations don’t stop there. X-Yachts have fitted Harken’s dual diameter Quattro winches to the coachroof, which allow fast sheeting of the spinnaker sheets via the large diameter drum or a lower gear by simply shifting the line up to the main drum and self-tailer.
The big carbon wheel was comfy to use from either side of the cockpit and offered a good view forward.
Lifting the GRP cover below the helmsman’s feet reveals another clever detail – the quadrant is immediately abaft the helm and as close to the centre of the wheel as possible, allowing short cables to be used and eliminating slack.
All good in theory, but does it work on the water? In a word, yes.
The X-Yachts X-41 is a thoroughbred racer which is already showing her class – the team won the first race of the Warsash Spring Series by 15 minutes on corrected time.
We sailed the boat twice; once for the second race of the series, then later for a detailed test.
On the first occasion, the wind ranged from 30-38 knots, giving us a fast run to the course and race organisers the jitters.
A stiff performer
They cancelled the race, but skipper Jochem Visser suggested we should go for a sail anyway.
It was a bumpy ride upwind under reefed main and jib, conditions that the hull’s steel reinforcement, which picks up rig and keel load, is designed to counteract.
Turning for the spinnaker run, we drove the boat hard, surfing down waves to reach speeds up to 15 knots.
The 12 crew were necessary to sail and balance the boat in these conditions and proved that the large cockpit could work well when fully crewed.
The second session couldn’t have been more different – bright sunshine and light winds averaging six knots.
The crew of 12 were essential for spinnaker work and helpful weight on the wind.
Sailing upwind and sacrificing a little height for power, the X-Yachts X-41 turned in a more than respectable five to six knots, often matching or exceeding the true wind speed.
She responded well to crew placement, delivering much better helm balance with plenty of weight to leeward.
The big carbon wheel was comfy to use from either side of the cockpit and offered a good view forward, and there were plenty of brace points for the helmsman whatever the steering position.
Helming was finger-light yet positive – the boat responded well to small corrections and the steering system showed no slack.
Even in these light airs, feedback was good and she proved easy to keep in the groove.
Upwind in 30 knots: the X-41 proved a good all-rounder.
Tacking is fast and straightforward thanks to the non-overlapping rig.
Bearing away and hoisting a symmetric spinnaker, we nudged seven knots, reaching as the wind filled in slightly. Again, she proved positive to handle, rewarding puffs of wind with good acceleration.
Under engine the 41 performed well, cruising at over eight knots and reaching just over nine knots flat out.
As can be expected from her narrow keel. the turning circle was tight – 1.25 boat lengths – and performance astern was secure and positive.
Although primarily a racing boat, the X-Yachts X-41 still offers a few cruiser comforts.
The cockpit is a good width for bracing and deep enough to feel secure, and has two good lockers for fenders and lines plus a large lazarette accessed through the floor behind the helm.
The racing foil on the headstay can be replaced with roller-reefing gear with the drum mounted below deck. But the really neat concession to cruising is the anchor box.
X-Yachts’ system lets you fit an anchor well and windlass which can be entirely removed when racing, using a fully sealed hatch to prevent water ingress. It’s not a quick job, admittedly, but impressive nonetheless.
Light and welcoming
The interior layout is similar to that of the X-35, but the extra length has allowed a few welcome changes, notably a larger galley, forward-facing nav station and doors and lockers for the aft cabins.
Yet the first impression below is of simplicity – there’s a light, welcoming feel thanks to teak being restricted to necessary joiner work, a generous use of white and lots of opening lights and hatches.
Starting at the bow, there’s a zippered, mesh panel which opens into an empty bow cavity suitable for sail stowage, but would be filled with the anchor box when cruising.
The forecabin has a conventional triangular berth, its split mattress easily moved to allow access beneath the berth.
The hatches which offer access to this stowage space are too narrow to accept anything but the smallest sails, but provide plenty of stowage for other objects.
Other stowage is provided by a large locker with hanging and shelving space. Both aft cabins feature a similar locker.
The heads and shower are basic, but practical.
Forward and accessed through the saloon, the heads is large enough for showering and has a large locker behind the usual mirrored doors the space below the sink is left open.
The saloon has two long settees either side of a drop-leaf table.
As on the X-35, the seat backs hinge upwards, giving access to the full width of the cushions when sleeping.
It’s a shame no extra cushion is provided, so that the hinged section can double as an upper berth.
That said, because the boat is able to sleep ten, few people are likely to find this restricting.
Plenty of white makes a bright interior.
The settee cushions and their plywood bases also hinge up to allow access to the water tank to port and diesel tank to starboard, plus limited stowage. Grab handles below the portlights run throughout the saloon.
A large nav station is at the foot of the companionway, with plenty of space for paper and electronic navigation.
Stowage is in a stack of four drawers in the pedestal and there’s even a handy pen box under a flap in the chart table top.
Opposite, the galley is large enough for standard cooking and has good stowage above the stove.
However, less successful is the stack of four drawers adjacent to the stove – with an inside width of only 9cm, you have to wonder how useful they will be.
The simple aft cabins have a large locker each and berths that are mounted low in the boat, with little space beneath.
A pipecot is also fitted should you need to squeeze three people into each cabin.
The engine box, which protrudes into both cabins, can be readily removed, as can the companionway steps, to provide superb all-round engine access.
For sheer adrenalin, the X-Yachts X-41 takes the honours. She’s fast and fun, and rewards careful trim and handling with clear returns of speed.
The big rig, deep draught and high sail area/displacement creates a stiff, responsive yacht that can put a smile on your face and some results on the board.
My guess is that X-Yachts X-41’s will spend most of their time in racing mode.
That said, just as many a sports car driver has never been near a track, several owners of the 40 or so boats already pre-sold admitted that they never plan to race at all.

X-Yachts who made history - X-102
Dienstag 2nd November 2021
In 1981, the second X-Yachts model was launched and it was a true racer. The X-102 was designed for IOR’s ¾ Ton upper rating limit of 24.55 ft.
In 1981 the X-102 hull no. 7, “Soldier Blue” won the ¾ Ton World Championship in Helsinki. “Soldier Blue” was skippered by Ib Ussing Andersen, helmed by Jens Christensen and with tactics by Lars Bo Ive.
In 1982, Ib Ussing Andersen repeated the success and won the same title in Denia in Spain, with the X-102 “Lille Du”. The boat was named after a song by Denmark’s best known pop and rock act, Kim Larsen. This win gave X-Yachts a head start in the international yachting arena.
173 X-102 were built in between the years of 1981 and 1987.
