Southern ocean 60 review: modern schooner.

On paper the Ocean 60 sounds like an antiquated schooner character boat from the 1970’s and early 1980’s. But closer inspection reveals what can be aptly called a modern, racing schooner, eminently suitable for long-distance cruising with her sea kindly qualities and simple rig. The legendary British manufacturer Southern Ocean Shipyards – with the unfortunate acronym SOS – opened shop at their Poole, England yard (near Southhampton on the south coast) in the mid 1960’s. The first production boat off the line was a 53-foot Van De Stadt design in 1967. In the 1970’s, they produced about 25 hulls of the Ocean 71 which was lofted directly from Van De Stadt’s famous Stormvogel yacht, the first ocean maxi. In the late 1970’s, Southern Ocean produced smaller racers including a 36-footer by J. de Ridder and the 30 Contention by Doug Peterson. According to brokerage records the Ocean 60’s were built between 1980 and 1982. After which, the yard produced 62-foot Van De Stadt and 80-foot Peterson designs until around 1985.

First Impressions The Ocean 60 design is by little known Poole architect Richard Roscoe and builder George Stead. Dockside besides her 75-foot schooner rig, the Ocean 60 has all the trappings of the raked bowed and sugar scooped sterned yachts that roll off the production lines these days. She even has a raised saloon deck mold with large doghouse windows all around. Hull detailing usually includes a thin cove stripe and her name forward. Her flush deck accentuates her subtle sheerline though limits headroom down below. On some models, the rocket ship stern has a swing out teak lined swim platform and ladder in the transom skirt lowerable by an aft deck block system. Underneath Roscoe and Stead gave her a deep fin keel drafting 8-feet and a skeg hung rudder.

  • LOA: 60′
  • Beam: 15′ 6″
  • LWL: 47′
  • Draft: 8′
  • Air Draft: 75′
  • Ballast: 15,000 lbs.
  • Displacement: 62,000 lbs.

Construction The hull is hand-laid solid fiberglass reinforced with transverse floors as well as two foam-cored longitudinal stringers running the full length of the hull on both port and starboard sides. Laminate thickness ranges from approximately 1-1/2″ at the keel to 3/8″ at the sheer. The deck also is solid laminate, reinforced with foam-cored transverse and longitudinal stringers. High stress deck areas (mooring cleats, hatch openings, mast partners, etc) are reinforced with mahogany plywood coring and additional laminate thickness. Some areas are reinforced by aluminum plate (cockpit winches, turning blocks, steering pedestal, bow platform). The keel is external cast iron, faired with fiberglass laminate, and secured through substantial keel floors and backing plates with twelve one-inch bolts. Both the spars are keel stepped.

On Deck There are two separate deck accessible quarters forward. The first is a foc’sle with room for sail and line stowage as well as a work area. The second might feature crew berths and the laundry along with the mast step for the forward spar. Above, the deck is flush speckled by dorades and ventilators. Amidships the cabin trunk rises up for the raised saloon accommodations below. There is minimal brightwork on deck (caprail, handrails, and cockpit grating) highlighting the modern approach of Southern Ocean Shipyards. Her sailplan is a ridiculously simple schooner rig with single headsail lead aft around the sheerline shrouds and through the likewise mounted sail track. The aft cockpit is deep and secure, typical of a serious offshore boat of this vintage with long enough benches to lay down on. There are two lazarettes abaft the cockpit which provide access to the steering components.

Down Below There are multiple different layout, at least three by my count. The most owner friendly features a full width master stateroom forward followed by a portside bunk berth cabin paired with a starboardside galley. A few steps up is a comfortable raised saloon with settees on both sides. Aftmost to port is a nav station and to starboard a quarter berth. The other layouts are more charter oriented, two examples of which are the layouts attached to this review. All feature fine interior veneer and solid teak touches. A valid critique for above 6-foot tall sailors is the average headroom forward due to the flush foredeck.

Engine Room for the generator is under the cockpit with access available from a starboard insert, a little tight to work on. The diesel is mounted below the raised saloon and while originally a Ford Sabre, may be repowered to a 4 cylinder Yanmar in the range of 110 to 180 HP. Fuel is carried in integral fiberglass tanks located under the saloon sole port and starboard with large access ports for gauging fuel level and for tank cleaning. If she does not feature one, a handy upgrade would be a bow thruster to ease docking difficulties.

Under Sail There is no questioning the seaworthiness of the Ocean 60 series. One brokerage listing boasted of making 20 Atlantic crossings! Southern Ocean Shipyards knew what they wanted and did not of their yachts. The Ocean 60 along with her 71-foot sistership are proven passagemakers bred for high performance offshore sailing. The schooner rig on the 60 is easily handed by two and 200 nautical mile days are common.

Conclusion The Ocean 60 series is world reknown for their ocean crossing capabilities. They uniquely feature schooner sail plans with modern design and build techniques. If you are looking for a serious offshore boat, need three or four staterooms, and can accommodate 8′ draft, you might consider these yachts. Looking at the brokerage market, two 60’s are available at $350,000 and $500,000.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

BALANCED FOR PERFORMANCE AND COMFORT

In order to be called a true luxury performance offshore cruising catamaran, the width of the OE60’s hull has been carefully balanced for performance and splendid liveaboard comfort. Displacement, hull shape, and sail power are the key design features of an OE. The advanced hydrodynamic shape of the hull, designed by world-renowned naval architect Germán Frers, utilizes the optimal length to beam ratio to minimize the wetted surface and deliver true performance. Instead of opting for fixed keels, a daggerboard configuration was chosen based on the advantages of providing lift, and lateral resistance versus drag. This design is also more efficient by providing outstanding upwind performance with the daggerboards down, and best performance with daggerboards up in a reaching or running sailing angle. Another advantage with the daggerboards up is that the draught is less than 80 cm, allowing you to sail and anchor in shallow waters unreachable to most.

You can’t talk high-performance sailing without talking about construction. Each yacht utilizes superior design, advanced engineering, and only the finest composite materials critical for the optimum strength to weight ratio. In keeping with the highest traditions of Finnish yacht building, each Ocean Explorer is handcrafted by an expert team of generational craftspeople.

Essential to any luxury yacht is the comfort, flow, utilization of space, and natural light of the interior design. With 360-degree vistas, superb ergonomics, and relaxing spaces, each interior is beautifully appointed, and custom finished to each owners’ personal tastes.

Exterior design

The Oceanis 60 is built on a hull that combines performance, moderate heel and safety at all times. She is designed with an unusual very open deck plan to offer small crews really easy manoeuvring.

Interior design

The brushed anthracite linings, together with the glossy woodwork and the generous shape of the upholstery are the hallmarks of its cosily designed interiors. The three or four cabin version of this flagship accommodates friends and family in premium comfort.

Make way for space

Under sail or at anchor, the new features of the Oceanis 60 set her apart. Boasting the most spacious cockpit ever offered on this size of cruiser and a magnificent aft deck, she makes life outdoors a real pleasure.

ocean 60 sailboat

Unique in its size and ‘sun-lounger’ concept, the aft deck extends outdoor life to well beyond the two steering wheels. With integrated sun-loungers, it creates a space similar to a second cockpit.

The clever layout of the aft cabins, with an office to starboard and V-berths, is loved by all.

Tender locker

Below the deck, the swim platform closes automatically over the storage space for the tender. It takes just a few steps to reposition the Highfield tender in its ‘cabin’ equipped with an inflation/deflation system.

Skipper cabin

Separate, the double skipper cabin is located to the bow of the boat.

Ocean Explorer OE60

OE60-19

Description

The yard behind the Ocean Explorer OE60 luxury performance catamaran is right next to Nautor’s Swan in Jakobstad, Finland: they have a real pedigree in building high performance yachts with oodles of style. And the designer? None other than German Frers who are behind the Swan 54, 60 and 78 among others.

The OE60 is the first model in a range that will go up to 78ft. This is their entry level boat, so they are aiming at the top end of the market. If you are looking for something smaller you might want to check out our ITA 14.99 review or take a look at the HH55. The 60 continues with the traditions of all of those performance boats from the Lagoon 67 and others that aim to match speed and comfort over long distances.

This boat is full of carbon to make it stiff, light and strong, with a full carbon rig and an option of a full carbon hull as well. Dual helm stations aft complete a package that is a no-compromise sailor’s yacht designed for maximum feel on the water.

Forget Hygge, that Danish word that got so much press a couple of years back—there’s a New Finnish word in town for cosy and that’s kalsarikannit – because that’s exactly what the saloon of this luxury cat feels like. The nav station on the forward port side of the saloon, with push button controls to all of the main controls is a real Wow Factor.

Nav station? It’s more like a Bridge. The saloon has sweeping all round views, and access to the foredeck is through a watertight door. You’ll be managing the halyards from here.

Even though this yacht has aft helms (like some of those classic custom boats such as the Azizam catamaran from JFA), the visibility is excellent through the windows of that coach roof. The galley has an island that runs along the port side and opposite is the dining area. The whole space opens up into the aft cockpit area to make a large living space.

That’s the other benefit of those aft helms of course. If you love your Nautitechs and Catanas, you are going to love it: it’s a super luxury version of this type of layout.

ocean 60 sailboat

The Ocean Explorer has good green credentials too with plenty of options including solar panels, regenerating prop, electric propulsion and black water treatment systems.

The finish on this catamaran is on a similar level to Swan – top of the class in other words.

Frers are famous for designing yachts with beautiful lines – and they have achieved this with this elegant catamaran. She looks sleek and powerful from most angles, although that cut away in the coach roof around the mast is an acquired taste. Let’s just call it quirky, shall we? She’ll stand out next to any boat.

I personally love the aft helms for that monohull feel. Let’s face it, if the weather turns nasty you are going to be tucked into that amazing nav station up front all warm and dry. The forward cockpit is a great area for manning halyards and standing watch in better weather too.

With that spreader-less rig (carbon option), she cuts a clean profile on the water. There are options for a spreader rig for a more powerful sail plan and a rotating mast too. She has a boom vang too which you don’t often see on cats this size.

ocean 60 sailboat

And with her retractable keels and rudders she’ll get right into those skinny water anchorages.

The genoa and self tacking solent are on electric furlers and you are free to run your downwind sails off the bowsprit. There are neat little details everywhere- the tension of the stay on the stay sail can be adjusted with a hydraulic control, for example. The genoa comes into its own when you are off the wind or on longer crossings.

Because this is a Frers, this is a sailor’s boat. Those helms give you full visibility of the sails and optimum feeling at the wheel.

All the sheets run aft and the controls are accessed on the helm control panel – raising and lowering the daggerboards, adjusting the traveller, forestay and sheet adjustments are all controlled from here. She’s been set up so that 2 people can easily manage her long distance sailing.

Under Power

The dual 80 HP Yanmars will push you along at up to 10 knots in calm conditions. Back them off to 2100 rpm and you should comfortably hit 7 knots, or just alternate between port and starboard for even more efficiency.

The Ocean Explorer OE60 catamaran is right up there on the top table of luxury performance catamarans. The finish is Swan quality and she’s been designed with sailors in mind with some deceptively simple touches that make her easy to handle for a short-handed crew.

You will need deep pockets, however. Price is on application and will depend on the kind of options you go for, but to give you an idea, a 2017 OE60 (“Cygnus Cygnus”) was on the market at the time of publication for €3.25 m.

Less than a Gunboat, but more than an Outremer 5X in other words. Start saving.
