OVERWHELMING RAIN OF PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS FOR SARISSA
…at Boat International’s Design & Innovation Awards in Kitzbühel, Austria:
- Best Exterior Design – Sailing Yachts: Sarissa
- Best Interior Design – Sailing Yachts: Sarissa
- Best Naval Architecture – Sailing Yachts: Sarissa
Aside of the recognition for the design, there is obviously excitement and gratitude on the part of the build team, who turned the design into reality. In addition, the team of Royal Huisman is particularly honored by the following additional awards:
- Eco Award: Sarissa’s board systems
- Innovation of the Year: Sarissa’s forward facing retractable electric propulsion
Sarissa – project 404 – high-performance sloop with retractable propulsion – 59.7m / 196ft – naval architecture: Malcolm McKeon – interior design: Liaigre – owners’ representative: Gregory Monks – hull material: Alustar® aluminium – superstructure: Carbon composite – delivery by Royal Huisman: 2023 – more information about Sarissa can be found at this website > delivered yachts [ link ]
Comments from the report by the judges:
Outstanding Exterior Design – Sailing Yachts: “…the level of development and detail on board Sarissa, which is based on a performance cruising boat profile, won the judges over. They remarked on the ‘stunning coachroof’ perfectly sleek and integrated; the ‘very clean’ design made possible by the hidden captive winches and hardware; the ‘lovely shapes’; and the design and execution level of the exterior furniture in the very livable cockpit, which several judges said they had never seen to date on a sailing yacht. The design perfectly reflects the brief of the experienced owners who wished for a modern-looking yacht with easy water access, comfort, shade, infinite water views, a jacuzzi and a climbing wall, along with performance. From bow to stern, no detail has been overlooked.”
Best Interior Design – Sailing Yachts: “In Greek, sarissa means a long, sharp spear. Its innovation in the third century BCE facilitated Alexander the Great’s empire, thus it is synonymous with technology, speed, strength and excellence. This Sarissa is all those things in a very private family boat destined for long passages and time at anchor. The interior is relaxed, homelike, fresh in chic simplicity and intelligent in the use of space. Vertical portlights drove the interior arrangement and led to the development of custom furniture that would not obscure the views, nor are features such as chainplates, sloping hull sides or the keel trunk hidden. The colour palette is simple with clear light oak, white lacquer and accenting leather. The unpredictability of the layout is a key feature. All cabins are unique, corridors gently curve, stairs are off centreline, the owner’s suite flows to a private beach club and the cinema hosts cosy elevated reading nooks.”
Best Naval Architecture – Sailing Yachts: “The four finalists for this category prove that sailing yachts continue to get more efficient and performance-oriented each year. After the naval architecture subcommittee crunched the numbers – evaluating the yachts on 35 points – the two top candidates were a hair’s breadth apart, although their mission statements were somewhat different. While Nilaya had the more complex brief and an innovative construction approach, the final result is that Sarissa presents the best all-around sailing ability, range, comfort quotient and stability. Both naval architects availed themselves of high-end CFD and FEA research. However, managing the much larger weights and loads of Sarissa, especially with multiple hull and deck openings, the in-boom furling of the world’s largest flat-top mainsail built in 3Di RAW and the innovation of massive fully retractable forward-facing propulsion drives, won the day.”
Note the clean hydrodynamic hull with retractable electric drive propulsion units retracted. A video of the folding out process can be found at this website: discover > innovation > 1. sustainabilty [ link ]
Eco Award: “Sarissa presents a multi-faceted approach to cruising with minimal environmental impact, from wind-driven propulsion, hydrogenerators and waste heat recovery to black and grey water treatment and trash management. Most of her power and propulsion needs are met with just one variable-speed genset and a 380kWh battery bank that can deliver four to eight hours of stored energy. Batteries charge via the propellers underway or when freewheeling during sailing. All rigging and spars and the mainsheet are airfoil sections, reducing drag. A Piranha Biological Marine Sanitation Device produces effluent cleaner than MARPOL standards and assures all cleaning and bathroom products are 100 per cent biodegradable and non-toxic. To minimise the waste produced, the galley is equipped with a food digester that uses biological enzymes to break down and digest up to 10 kilograms of food waste daily, a compactor for plastics and cardboard and a glass crusher for bottles and jars.”
Innovation of the Year: Forward-facing, retractable electric propulsion: “Royal Huisman boldly chose to install the first Hydrosta forward-facing retractable electric azipod propulsion for reasons of redundancy, efficiency and improved performance under sail on board Sarissa. Opening doors allows the propulsion legs to swing down from inside the hull, and the doors re-close to create a smooth underwater profile. These 500kW units rotate through 90 degrees, replacing the need for a stern thruster, which saves weight and noise. Being electric drives and located along with their battery stack forward under machinery and watersports stowage, the system removes noise from the guest areas, plus the yacht can be away from a dock or mooring without starting an engine. The pulling, fixed-pitch propellers linked to permanent magnet motors act like underwater turbines, charging the batteries and providing carbon-free power to the ship’s systems, reducing demand on the Volvo gensets.”
It is not easy to be objective about the quality of your own work. Organizations such as the International Superyacht Society Awards and their expert, independent juries help to provide an unbiased measure of achievement. An overview of awards for Royal Huisman in recent years can be found at this website: yachts > awards [ link ].
Murdoch's superyacht 'Sarissa' arrives
Dutch carbon-fibre performance sloop with cockpit swimming pool.
Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch’s stunning new carbon-fibre superyacht Sarissa has arrived in Sydney in time for summer. Designed by Bill Tripp and built by Dutch yard Vitters, the cutting-edge yacht was two years in the making and is the largest carbon-fibre sloop built to date in the Netherlands.
Vitters Shipyard's website describes Sarissa as a spectacular 42.6 m carbon globetrotter and performance sloop with a fully modern hull shape, sail plan, and foils.
Hydraulic sailing and deck systems are said to provide improved reaction speed, load and stiffness to safely facilitate the sailing performance this modern and technical yacht was designed for.
Other custom technical features are an in-house developed hydraulic steering system with rudder feedback, as well as a unique system of back stays and running stays to operate both her cruising and racing sail configurations. The yacht has a lifting keel.
The mainsheet has been placed on an arch spanning the cockpit to keep the deck clear, while the aft cockpit can be transformed into a swimming pool for the kids.
Sarissa's design was guided by close client input and involvement, says Vitters, adding that the yacht will be used to sail all over the world with the family in tow and will take part in the established superyacht regattas.
The layout and deck plan emphasise a clean and modern look, while the family friendly layout below decks boasts a full-beam after stateroom, three guests cabins and three crew cabins.
The stunning interior is by Rhoades Young Design Ltd using a combination of limed oak, dark Italian walnut, Indian rosewood, carbon, dark leather and brushed stainless steel.
Finished in swordfish blue Alexseal paint, with a Ribling 555 tender in the 'garage', the 163 tonne Sarissa has a 56m carbon mast and will be hard to miss moored at Wooloomooloo in Sydney’s CBD.
Meantime, father Rupert reportedly listed his 184ft yacht Rosehearty , built by Perini Navi in Italy in 2006, for sale in September this year for $29.7 million. This followed his divorce from wife Wendi Deng.

Take a look at what architects pitch for a redesigned Cape Coral Yacht Club
New details, photos, and a video have emerged on the proposed changes to the Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park, changing it from an Old Florida feel to a 'Key West' vibe.
The city plans to present these updates on the Yacht Club at this week's committee of the whole meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in council chambers at 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.
Here's what we know.
Yacht Club changes explained
Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s, built and open just a few years after the city's inception in 1957 by brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen .
In 2018, voters approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond. Part of that was intended for the Yacht Club.
The Cape Coral City Council originally planned to close and begin work on renovations for the park in 2021 .
But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule as justification for moving forward with new buildings and amenities.
Longtime residents and former city officials opposed the plans - however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.
What's featured in the new Yacht Club?
The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new 14,500-square-foot resort-style pool.
Current parking at the park; including for boats, vehicles, and boat trailers, amounts to 551 total spaces.
The proposed changes would bring a four-story garage with approximately 685 parking spaces, 15 surface spaces at the main building, 46 boat trailers, and 158 boat slip spaces - totaling 904 parking spaces.
The new two-story community center would have 47,000 square feet and include a new ballroom, concession, history room, exterior balcony, storage and meeting space, and a multi-purpose hall.
Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much as $100 million .
Demolition has begun
Cape Coral has already begun the work toward these changes as demolition started this month.
The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.
Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted to demolish and deconstruct the Yacht Club for $987,716.04.
The firm is also tasked with preserving a portion of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and interior doors.
Construction will not affect the beach area.
What's next? When's the completion?
A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.
The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.

Jason Donovan spotted living it up on a super yacht with soap star daughter

Aussie legend Jason Donovan has been spotted soaking up the sun on a superyacht with his soap star daughter, Jemma.
Donovan, 55, who recently returned Down Under to perform in The Rocky Horror Picture Show , was spotted sunning himself on the glamorous yacht in Sydney Harbor on Monday afternoon.
The father-of-three looked carefree as he enjoyed the beautiful scenery while enjoying some bonding time together with 24-year-old Jemma.
At one point the Aussie actor and singer was seen taking a moment for himself and snapping a shirtless selfie as the sun shone down on the yacht.
Jemma previously followed in her dad’s legendary footsteps after appearing in Neighbours between 2019 and 2022.
However, she eventually ditched Australia for the UK and joined Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks where she met her boyfriend, co-star Owen Warner.
Donovan also currently lives in the UK with his wife Angela, but he regularly makes the trip back Down Under.
It comes after the reformed drug addict recently made an honest confession about his past.
In an interview with The Guardian, Donovan shared the one thing he would change about his past if he could go back in time.
“My relationship with drugs,” he confessed.
Back in 2021, Donovan confessed that he had secretly smoked marijuana on the set of the soap Neighbours during a break in filming.
Donovan, who played Scott Robinson, snuck round the back of Lassisters, the soap’s fictional hotel, to light up with co-star David Clencie.
But Donovan was caught out when he was suddenly called to appear in a scene.
The 52-year-old revealed: “One afternoon, when I had finished all my scenes for the day, David asked me whether I wanted to share a joint with him.
“I’d never smoked at work before but this was all too tempting.”
“We were sitting on the ground, smoking, laughing and getting progressively more stoned, when I suddenly heard my name called. I was wanted on set! There had been a change to the schedule.
More Coverage
“Having stubbed out my doobie, cleaned my teeth in the make-up room, put eye drops into my eyes and dusted myself down, I went back onto set.
“I tried to act as normally as possible, but it was an absolute disaster,” he continued.
“My head was a complete fog, my mouth was dry, my eyes were so pinned they looked like p***holes in the snow, I couldn’t remember any of my lines and I kept banging into people.”
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s daughter has been spotted in a rare sighting, and she looks just like her famous mother.

Meet The "Crazy" New Chef Replacing Anthony Iracane on Below Deck (VIDEO)
The new chef will replace Anthony Iracane on the St. David.
Following the “heartbreaking” departure of Anthony Iracane on Below Deck Season 11, the St. David crew officially welcomes their newest yacht mate , Chef Nick Tatlock.
How to Watch
Watch Below Deck on Bravo Mondays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo App .
In the video above, which is a preview of Below Deck Season 11 , Episode 13 (airing April 29), viewers get their first glimpse at the new person in charge of the galley and hear from a few of the existing yachties as they share their initial impressions of the Chef de Cuisine.
Who is the new chef on Below Deck ?
Nick Tatlock is the newest staff member to join the crew on the St. David . The chef was hired by Captain Kerry Titheradge on the April 22 episode of Below Deck after reviewing various CVs of candidates and sending a text to the yacht services coordinator.
"Hey, get that new chef on a plane ASAP," the message read. "He's hired."
In the preview clip during a confessional interview, Nick opened up about his work experience and witty personality, saying, “I’ve been a chef for 22 years. I think I lost my mind a long time ago. Maybe, I talk to myself too much, I have a few little ticks and go a little bit loopy sometimes, but I’m harmless crazy. You know, I’m not about to murder anyone.”

Meet Nick, the new chef on Season 11 of Below Deck replacing Anthony Iracane
During Nick's arrival to the St. David , deckhand Kyle Stillie was the first yachtie to spot him out. “Is this the chef?” Kyle yelled before Sunny Marquis announced on the walkie-talkie, “All crew, all crew: chef incoming.”
Immediately, Bosun Ben Willoughby headed to the dock to greet the new chef. “I’m Nick. Nice to meet you,” the newbie crew member said.
After getting adjusted on the yacht, Nick made his way to the bridge to meet with Kerry, where he was informed of why he was hired and what is expected of him aboard.
“I had to let the last guy go… He wasn’t reading the preference sheets properly,” Kerry told Nick. “I’ve seen you been on some big boats, so I’m not here to teach you how to cook… Of course, work well with the interior team.”
How old is Chef Nick from Below Deck Season 11?
While Kerry seemed pleased with his new hire, Sunny, on the other hand, noticed one thing that was different about Nick than Anthony.
One Crew Member Was Fired and Another Left During an Explosive Below Deck: "Not Acceptable”
While hanging out on the deck, Fraser Olender asked Sunny, Kyle, and Dylan Pierre De Villiers for their “first impressions” of the new chef. As for Sunny’s response? She said, “Old, older,” to which Fraser replied, “How old?”
So what’s Nick’s age? Well, he admitted in an interview that he was “40” and that “yachting is something that keeps [him] youthful.”
