29 Most Expensive Celebrity Yachts, Ranked by Value

David and Victoria Beckham Yacht

Celebrities consistently create demand in the private yacht market. If a celebrity’s net worth is in the high millions or more, they can certainly afford to indulge in luxury superyachts, which can cost well into seven figures or more and have six- to seven-figure annual operating costs.

The main reason that celebrities like yachting is that they can enjoy intimate, low-key trips with friends and family, out of reach of paparazzi cameras. Tiger Woods enjoys personal time aboard his yacht so much that he named the ship Privacy and even sleeps on board when he travels to golf tournaments.

Even if celebrities don’t own a yacht, they may charter them, as Rihanna and Beyonce do, for quiet time away from the spotlight. After traveling on a friend’s yacht, or chartering one, a celebrity may decide to take the plunge and buy one themselves. That’s what happened to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling after she chartered actor Johnny Depp’s yacht. The Beckhams decided to get their own vessel after spending summers on the Mediterranean with their good friend Sir Elton John on his yacht Wabi Sabi. Some celebrities, such as Apple founder Steve Jobs, singer Billy Joel or fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, were involved in every step of creating their own customized yacht.

So, which celebrity yachts are the most expensive and extravagant? We made a list of the top ones — some of which have been sold in recent years, possibly due to their high operating costs, but will always be identified with their iconic celebrity owners. We then ranked the yachts by their current value, adjusted for inflation.

10 Of The Most Expensive Celebrity Yachts, Ranked

aerial shot of luxury yacht in turquoise water

There's nothing that says luxury and wealth like owning a boat. Visit any marina worldwide, and the presence of wealth is evident, regardless of the boat's size. This isn't just about the initial price of acquiring a boat. Beyond the purchase, the real investment comes in the form of maintenance. Boats, especially those frequently exposed to saltwater, demand consistent care and attention. Add to that the costs of a crew if you're not piloting the boat yourself.

However, the height of maritime luxury isn't just owning a boat — it's owning a yacht. And beyond that, the elite realm of superyachts. These nautical marvels are not just expensive to buy; they have a continuum of costs. Their construction involves multi-million dollar investments. Over the years, maintaining them, staffing them, and ensuring their prime condition can add millions more to their total upkeep. When a superyacht drops anchor at a harbor, it's a clear indicator of the arrival of someone with substantial wealth and fame.

Let's dive into the world of the 10 most expensive celebrity yachts, ranking them from the least impressive to the absolute best.

10. Eclipse

Number 10 on our list is a behemoth in the world of yachts: The Eclipse. This colossal vessel is one of the largest, most opulent, and priciest yachts globally. And it comes with some impressive stats: a weight of 13,000 tons, a submersible, three individual landing crafts, and dual helicopter pads. It stretches 533 feet from its bow to its stern.

Designed for maximum comfort, the Eclipse can accommodate 24 guests, supported by a crew of 70. Onboard luxuries include fine dining options, a selection of pools, spa facilities, and even a grand ballroom.

The Eclipse is in the upper echelons of extravagance, within the domain of only the ultra-wealthy. The estimated investment for its construction, subsequent maintenance, and refits top a staggering $1.5 billion. Its current owner is none other than the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

As a billionaire's billion-dollar toy, it might be surprising to see it ranked last on the list. The reason is simple. The Eclipse cannot sail due to geopolitical reasons. Following the invasion of Ukraine, Russia faced significant backlash on the global stage, and owning a vessel as a prominent Russian billionaire brings its own set of challenges.

While the yacht hasn't been seized, securing clearance for it to berth at international ports has become an uphill task. This begs the question: What's the value of a yacht that's anchored indefinitely? At present, the Eclipse is "mothballed," a term signifying its long-term storage to shield it from environmental elements and render it dormant.

9. Lady Moura

Since her launch in 1990, the Lady Moura is a vintage gem that has gracefully weathered the test of time, retaining her status as one of the most lavish private yachts afloat. At the time of her debut, she held the rank of ninth largest private yacht globally. As years passed and the elite built bigger and better yachts, the rank slipped to the 48th position. However, age hasn't made Lady Moura worse for wear; strategic refits in 2007 and again in 2017 have ensured she remains contemporary and sophisticated.

Fitted with 13 beautiful cabins, the Lady Moura accommodates 27 guests and a crew of up to 72. The ship offers an array of entertainment options, from a designated compartment for wake surfing, plush lounges, chic bars, and rejuvenating jacuzzis to a dance floor, a state-of-the-art movie theater, and a helipad. The standout feature of this particular yacht is the retractable platform, which can be layered with sand, allowing guests to enjoy a beach-like atmosphere while out at sea.

Currently, the Lady Moura is owned by Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego. He purchased the Lady Moura in 2021 from Nasser Ibrahim Al-Rashid of Saudi Arabia for approximately $125 million.

8. Rising Sun

The Rising Sun is another of the superyachts of the world that's famous or infamous, depending upon your point of view. Built by the esteemed Lürssen shipyards, this 454-foot-long beauty was initially commissioned for Larry Ellison. The former CEO of Oracle not only enjoyed the yacht during his leisure time but also leased it to A-list celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Oprah, to name a few. In 2010, the yacht transitioned to its current owner, David Geffen.

After acquiring the Rising Sun, Geffen initiated an extensive refit, expanding its already high capacity to 82 guest rooms. The yacht's facilities are nothing short of extravagant: a state-of-the-art gym, a gorgeous wine cellar, swanky bars, and multiple lounges and sun decks.

However, the Rising Sun's reputation isn't solely linked to luxury. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it unwittingly became the focal point of criticism. As the world grappled with the virus and its economic fallout, David Geffen's social media post ruffled feathers. From the deck of his $200 million yacht, anchored off the Grenadines' coast in the Caribbean, he posted a picture with the caption, "Sunset last night...isolated in the Grenadines avoiding the virus. I'm hoping everybody is staying safe." Though the sentiment might have been well-intentioned, many perceived it as tone-deaf, considering the stark contrast between his isolation and the hardships faced by many at that time.

The grandeur of the Octopus yacht is evident in its design and the luxuries it houses. Owned by billionaire Roger Samuelsson, known for his ventures in medical equipment, the Octopus measures an impressive 413 feet from bow to stern.

Among its lavish amenities, it includes a full cinema, multiple lounges and bars, a gym, a basketball court, and observation decks. Notably, the yacht also features two submersibles, one of which was used by Google for their underwater mapping initiative, the "Explore the Earth" project.

Operating the Octopus comes at a steep price, reportedly nearing $400,000 a week. This expense covers the 60 full-time staff who can effectively manage the vessel and cater to its maximum occupancy of 26 guests.

The yacht's history traces back to 2003 when it was commissioned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Built by Lürssen Shipyards for $200 million, it underwent a refit after Allen's passing before being acquired by Samuelsson for an estimated $300 million.

The Radiant hits the middle of the pack when it comes to super yachts, but that doesn't mean it's mediocre by any means. With a staggering cost of $300 million, it was masterfully constructed by the renowned Lürssen shipyards in Germany.

Much of the Radiant's interior remains a mystery, a well-kept secret for those lucky enough to charter or own it, though it's reputed for its lavish contemporary design. What's publicly known, however, is its vast array of amenities. The Radiant has multiple sun decks, a massage room, a jacuzzi, a gym, and a movie theater. The Radiant is managed by a crew of 40 staff members to see to the needs of guests aboard and to keep the shipboard systems running.

The Radiant's current owner is billionaire Abdulla Al Futtaim. There was some legal trouble when he first purchased the vessel. The broker who helped create the deal for the ship was never paid and had to go to court to get his commission. Eventually, the court ruled in the broker's favor, and Abdulla Al Futtaim had to pay the commission fee.

Today, the Radiant, with its impressive 5,000-ton stature, remains primarily for the personal use of its owner, though it has occasionally been available for charter in the past.

5. Motor Yacht A

Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko owns both Motor Yacht A and the more notable Sailing Yacht A. Unlike the Eclipse, Sailing Yacht A isn't currently operational because it has been seized due to sanctions against Russia. In contrast, Motor Yacht A remains anchored in the neutral waters of UAE ports.

Though its name might sound mundane, Motor Yacht A stands out in the yachting world. It was built by the German shipyard Blohm+Voss. Its most unique feature is its striking design created by architect Philippe Starck. Its outer appearance creates a knife-edge-like effect that looks as though the yacht is cutting through the water, making it one of the most unique designs in the superyacht market.

Its unique shape isn't simply aesthetic. Its hull design allows for its impressive speed of 23 knots and better handling. Despite the slimmer profile, the interior is still large and lavishly decorated. Most surfaces are covered in mirrors or Baccarat crystal. Some walls can also be reconfigured to allow for expanded staterooms. To keep guests entertained, there is a helipad for excursions, several lounges, a fully equipped dance floor, and two pools. Motor Yacht A cost $300 million to build and is, to this day, one of the most unique yachts on the water. Even its name is unique simply being "A", named so that it would appear first on any ship registry.

The luxury superyacht Dubai, valued at $400 million, is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the current ruler of Dubai.

This yacht has an intriguing backstory. Initially, the project was commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. However, financial constraints led him to halt the construction, leaving only the steel frame in place. The project was then taken over by Sheikh Mohammed, who had a clear vision for the yacht — to create a floating representation of the Burj Al Arab, Dubai's iconic luxury hotel and the self-proclaimed world's only seven-star hotel.

Upon completion, Dubai held the title of the world's largest luxury yacht from 2006 to 2009. Its design features eight distinct decks, each tailored for specific guests and functions. There are standard rooms, VIP suites, dedicated spaces for staff and security, and the top two decks exclusively reserved for the owner, complete with direct access to the helipad.

Capable of accommodating around 80 guests, the yacht boasts a grand dining area that can seat 90 individuals simultaneously. To ensure a luxurious experience for its occupants, Dubai is equipped with several amenities, including a submersible, multiple swimming pools, spa services, a fully-equipped gym, and numerous lounges scattered throughout.

3. A+ (formerly the Topaz)

The A+ superyacht is one of the world's pinnacle luxury yachts, although it has been surpassed in the rankings by newer and larger vessels in recent times. Built by Lürssen shipyards in Germany, its extensive customization sets it apart from any other yacht sailing the oceans. With a remarkable length of 482 feet and a displacement of 900 tons, this impressive vessel initially sailed under the name "Topaz." It was the pride of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a billionaire and a significant figure in Abu Dhabi's royal family.

It remained an enigmatic gem for years among the yachting community as a secret of the elite. However, it was chartered by Leonardo DiCaprio during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and afterward became synonymous with luxury.

The interior is massive and more akin to a luxury resort than a sailing vessel. It's equipped with a spa, a fully equipped gym, multiple pools, and large open relaxation areas. A distinctive glass elevator connecting the various decks spans the yacht's entire height.

The name was changed from the Topaz to the A+ in 2019. Typically, this only occurs when ownership changes, but it's still registered under Sheikh Mansour's name. However, it's rumored that it was gifted to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia.

The original cost of the A+ was $450 million — it held the top three spot for most expensive superyachts for several years before eventually being knocked down. It is now rumored that Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan is currently in talks to have an even bigger version built.

2. Koru (Y721)

When engines and motorized yachts first hit the market, they were the height of luxury. Now billionaire Jeff Bezos is gaining recognition for sustainability and luxury with a massive $500 million masted superyacht, proving that time is not linear but, in fact, a flat circle.

This state-of-the-art sailing yacht went by the name Y721 during its construction phase. As it approached completion, it received its official name: Koru . After undergoing and completing rigorous sea trials, the Koru has been handed over to Jeff Bezos, marking its debut as one of the freshest superyachts navigating the seven seas.

Designed as a highly specialized schooner equipped with three masts, the Koru was crafted by the renowned Dutch shipbuilders Oceanco at a cost nearing $500 million. Its maiden sea trials were not without controversy. Due to their height, the vessel's sails couldn't even pass beneath a historic bridge in Rotterdam. Bezos proposed a solution where he'd fund the dismantling and subsequent reconstruction of the bridge to let his new yacht pass. However, faced with resistance from the locals, the masts were simply attached after sailing outside the harbor.

The Koru combines an old-world sailing aesthetic with the cutting-edge technology of today. At first glance, it looks like an iconic sailing vessel headed for the new world, but the longer you look at it, the more technology and luxury amenities you'll spot. Inside the skin of the ship, it's reported to have an entire spa dedicated to guests, gyms, pools, world-class fine dining, and an integration of technology and luxury amenities.

The Azzam ranks at the pinnacle of luxury yachts. It stands out in its class as one of the world's largest, most opulent, and swiftest superyachts. Commissioned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the UAE royal family, its construction costs amounted to $600 million, and impressively, it was completed in just three years.

The Azzam itself is the height of luxury. It can hold 36 passengers comfortably with a support crew of 60. While aboard the Azzam, guests can enjoy a full gym, swimming pools, a full golf simulator, and numerous places to lounge and relax. The main sitting area is 95 feet long and was built without central support structures, so the entire area is open. It even includes a chandelier designed not to rattle at sea. In addition, the Assam has two helipads and a submersible for adventurous excursions.

Beyond luxury, the Azzam also prioritizes security. The owner's suite is fortified with bulletproof materials, ensuring utmost safety. The yacht is further equipped with a missile defense system and has a contingent of armed security personnel onboard.

Following the passing of its former owner, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in 2022, the yacht underwent a change in ownership. The current owner's identity remains undisclosed, but it's widely believed that the Azzam continues to be held by the UAE royal family.

Yacht-a, yacht-a, yacht-a.

Experts at Ritzy Charters have revealed a list of the 10 most expensive yachts afloat — and the top three are worth a whopping $1.29 billion combined, exceeding the GDP of some smaller countries.

“Luxury yachts are more than just a symbol of wealth; they not only provide incredibly gorgeous views but a level of privacy to those onboard who want a sense of relaxation that you can’t get from anywhere other than chartering across oceans,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement .

#1 David Geffen, “The Rising Sun”

Riding high at the top of the list is media magnate David Geffen’s The Rising Sun , worth a jaw-dropping $590 million.

Originally owned by tech mogul Larry Ellison, the superyacht cost an estimated $200 million to build back in 2004. The classy craft measures more than 452 feet long and features a basketball court, a helicopter landing pad and a wine cellar — even a movie theater.

Boldfacers who’ve accepted invitations to sail on the elite vessel include Oprah, Stephen Spielberg, Barack Obama and Julia Roberts.

Geffen purchased the vessel — which holds 18 guests and 55 crew members in its 82 rooms — in 2010.

#2 Jeff Bezos, “Koru”

Koru, owned by Jeff Bezos, is worth $500 million. It features a figurehead carved in the likeness of fiancee Lauren Sanchez.

Second on the list is the Koru , owned by none other than Amazon founder Jeff Bezos .

The behemoth, triple-masted yacht — reportedly worth an impressive $500 million — is the largest billionaire yacht that can venture into the high seas by sail power only.

Hosting celebs like Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry, Koru features a pool, hot tub, bars, multiple dining spaces and a masthead modeled after the mogul’s fiancee, Lauren Sanchez .

#3 Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg, “Eos”

The yacht is owned by Film mogul Barry Diller and his fashion designer wife, Diane von Fuerstenberg.

In third place is the Eos, which belongs to fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and her husband, Barry Diller, who purchased the ship in 2009 for $200 million, Ritzy Charters reports.

The 305-foot long superyacht, which features a glass staircase, a jacuzzi and a figurehead of von Furstenberg herself, accommodates up to 14 travelers.

#4 Laurene Powell, “Venus”

The yacht ordered by Apple's late founder Steve Jobs remains docked at the De Vries shipyard in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands, on October 29, 2012.

The $120 million, Phillippe Starck-designed Venus, owned by Steve Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell, comes in fourth, measuring in at 225 feet. Powell does not use the yacht often and does not charter it out either, according to YachtWorld — she was last spotted using it in Barbados, nearly a year ago.

#5 Sean “Diddy” Combs, “The Maraya”

most expensive celebrity yachts

In fifth is Sean “Diddy” Combs’ 177-foot yacht named The Maraya, which cost the rapper an estimated $65 million, back in 2012.

The boat can be chartered for $300,000 per week, and holds up to 12 seafarers in six cabins. There’s a gym, jacuzzi and even a personal chef.

#6 Georgio Armani, “Main”

most expensive celebrity yachts

Fashion designer Georgio Armani’s $64 million “Main,” honoring a nickname given to his mother, is a sleek, dark 213-footer, designed by Italian firm Codecasa. The already impressive ship will soon be bested by something even bigger and more sleek; the new craft is due to set sail in 2024.

#7 Jackie Chan, “Jinlong 4601”

The famed martial artist spent two years waiting for his impressive superyacht, built in China and said to be worth $46 million.

#8 Sir Elton John, “Wabi Sabi”

Designed for going off the grid, or at least something like it, the $29.1 million craft has been spotted in all kinds of remote locations around the globe. As of earlier this year, the American-made pleasure cruiser was reportedly up for sale; in the meantime, it was being offered for rent at an eye-watering $195,000 per week.

#9 Tiger Woods, “Privacy”

Tiger woods yacht Privacy reportedly up for sale for the tune of $25million.

There’s an 8-person jacuzzi on deck aboard the $29 million “Privacy,” delivered in 2004 and considered to be one of the plushest yachts in its class.

#10 J.K. Rowling, Amphitrite

The ship that Harry bought — J.K. Rowling's Amphitrite formerly belonged to Johnny Depp.

Formerly belonging to Johnny Depp — and named Amphitrite by the movie star in honor of then-partner Amber Heart, the relatively modest but impressive boat was sold to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling some years back. The classic style is a departure from the sleek, modern look favored by other owners.

Celebrity superyachts: top three worth $1.29bn

Superyachts in Monaco.

The superyacht industry is facing a number of headwinds, say brokers. Photo: MYS2023

The top three celebrity superyachts have a combined value of $1.29bn, according to new research from yacht charter firm Ritzy Charters. Leading the fleet in terms of value was billionaire media mogul David Geffen’s yacht The Rising Sun , reportedly costing $590m.

The research ranked the top 10 celebrity-owned yachts and their price tags. The second most expense celebrity yacht, with a reported price tag of $500m, was Koru , owned by American business magnate and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Completing the top three in the list of most expensive celebrity yachts was Eos, reportedly valued at $200m, owned by Belgian fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and her husband, Barry Diller. Read the full list of top celebrity yacht values below.

Geffen’s 138m (453ft) The Rising Sun cost about $200m to build in 2004.

Geffen bought the vessel, which is capable of 30 knots, in 2010. Equipped with 82 rooms, the yacht is designed to accommodate about 18 guests and 55 crew members. Amenities include a basketball court, wine cellar and an onboard cinema.

The second most expensive celebrity yacht, Bezos’s 127m ( 417ft) Koru , also known as Y721 , is said to be the world’s largest sailing yacht. Featuring a swimming pool, the yacht can accommodate up to 18 guests and 40 crew members. The boat’s design is said to be inspired by Māori art, with its name Koru symbolising strength, new life and peace.

The third most expensive yacht, the 93m (305ft) Eos, was reportedly bought by its current owners in 2009 for $200m. Capable of a top speed of 18mph, the vessel can accommodate up to 14 guests. Novel features include a glass staircase, a 14ft world map, a jacuzzi and a figurehead of owner von Furstenberg.

A spokesperson for Ritzy Charters said: “Luxury yachts are more than just a symbol of wealth; they not only provide incredibly gorgeous views but a level of privacy to those onboard who want a sense of relaxation that you can’t get from anywhere other than chartering across oceans.”

Owning a superyacht offers a sense of seclusion far away from paparazzi and the public eye, added the spokesperson. “Privacy is a huge part of the experience of a superyacht, which is why celebrities are drawn to spending large sums of money on owning their own.”

Meanwhile, the fourth most expensive celebrity yacht was the $120m Venus, owned by Laurene Powell, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Designed by Phillippe Stark, the vessel is equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows across its 78m (256ft) length and can reach a top speed of 18 knots. The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins and 22 crew members in 14 cabins. The yacht’s annual running cost is estimated at between $10-$15m.

The fifth most expensive celebrity-owned yacht is the 54m (177ft) The Maraya , owned by American rapper, record producer, record executive and actor Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. Costing about $65m in 2012, the vessel can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins. Her features include a sundeck jacuzzi, gym and wellness area, not to mention its very own chef. The superyacht can be chartered for about $300,000 per week.

“It is exciting to see just how luxurious and spectacular the yachts owned by some of the most famous people in the world are. From how they were designed, crafted, and produced, it is widely appreciated how beautiful and unique some of the most expensive yachts on our world’s oceans are and just how much they cost.”

The 5 Most Expensive Superyachts in the World

By Brett Berk

Eclipse the private luxury yacht of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich anchors in Fethiye district of Mugla

Though superyachts are already among the most costly consumer items available for purchase, the prices of the most expensive superyachts in the world are still astounding. In recent decades, those with money to burn have settled on these floating palaces as an ideal locus for demonstrating their prosperity, and as such, the global superyacht industry is undergoing a golden age. The world’s über-wealthy think of their superyachts as toys, and they’re constantly trying to outdo each other in scale, design, amenities, materials, and sheer profligacy.

Knowing this, what features does it take to own one of the most expensive superyachts in existence? And how much do these opulent vessels actually cost? To that end, AD has compiled a list of the five priciest superyachts currently out on the water. As with many things connected to the very wealthy, details are shrouded in secrecy—often intentionally—to protect privacy or to shield the assets from taxation or seizure. Below, dive into the five reportedly most expensive superyachts in the world.

Super yacht Dubai is moored at the Doha Sailin

5. Dubai ($400 million)

This 531-foot yacht is reportedly owned by United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Though it was originally planned for another Middle Eastern potentate, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, he suddenly voided the contract in 2001. With exteriors designed by Andrew Winch and interiors by Platinum Yachts, this German-built Blohm + Voss vessel features several Jacuzzis, a pool inlaid with handmade mosaic tiles that is reportedly large enough to hold 115 people, a circular staircase, a discotheque, squash courts, a movie theater, a dining room for 90 guests (the other 25 presumably have to eat in the pool?), a helipad, and a submarine.

The 147 meter mega luxury yacht of Manchester City soccer club owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan from UAE

4. Topaz ($527 million)

Resembling a stealth bomber, this 483-foot ship is reportedly owned by Russian fertilizer and coal oligarch, Andrey Melnichenko. With exteriors by Tim Heywood Design Ltd. and interior designs by Terence Disdale Design, this German-built Lürssen Yacht features a 2,500-square-foot primary bedroom, six guest suites (with moveable walls so they can be transformed into four grand staterooms), glassware and tableware fashioned from French crystal, a helicopter hangar, a 30-foot speedboat tender, and three swimming pools, including one with a glass-bottom dangling menacingly above a disco.

3. Azzam ($600 million)

This 590-foot ship is currently thought to be the largest private yacht in the world and one of the fastest, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. To achieve this immense scale and speed, it required a pair of gas turbines and two stratospherically potent diesel engines, rendering it very difficult to build. It is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With exteriors by Nauta Yacht and interiors by French decorator Cristophe Leoni, this yacht was also built by Lürssen in Germany. The vessel is set apart by its early 19th-century empire-style veneered furniture, as well as its state-of-the-art security systems including a fully bulletproof primary suite and a high-tech missile deterrence capabilities.

2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion)

In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.

1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion)

History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real, and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-carat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. Al Saïd Lürssen

As superyachts continue to get bigger and more extravagant than ever before, so too do the accompanying price tags. According to the Boats Group’s market index, the average cost of a yacht above 80 feet in the US last year was $5.3 million. As you’ll see below, though, there are a handful of high-end vessels that blow that figure out of the water.

Although it’s difficult to get exact prices in what is a fiercely secretive industry, sales of luxury yachts have surged amid the pandemic and the ultra-wealthy are more willing than ever to fork out for ostentatious ocean goers. Case in point: Billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos reportedly parted with $485 million for his Oceanco megayacht that’s currently in build.

Believe it or not, that’s quite a modest price compared to at least half of the entries on this list. Lürssen’s Dilbar , for instance, is rumored to have cost in the ballpark of $800 million. As alluded to, the shipyards behind these lavish, nine-figure designs seldom share details regarding ownership or price. Therefore, the amounts cited here are estimates pulled together from Wikipedia and other reliable sources. Still, the 15 vessels here give you a good idea of what’s possible when money is no object and the best builders in the business are at your whim.

Lürssen: ‘Dilbar’ — $800 Million

EU authorities began to seize Russian Oligarch's superyachts

Delivered in 2016, Lürssen’s Dilbar is the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage. It’s also the most expensive with an original price tag in the ballpark of $800 million. Weighing in at 15,917 tons, the monolithic 512-footer is one of the most complex and challenging vessels the German yard has ever built. Penned by Espen Øino, Dilbar features a classic profile and a light ivory hull with bronze accents. Onboard, meanwhile, the elegant interiors were brought to life by Winch Design and outfitted with only the best luxury materials. The pièce de résistance is, of course, the 82-foot swimming pool. Lürssen says it is the largest pool ever to have been installed on a yacht. Seafarers also have access to 41,000 square feet of saloons, staterooms, spas and cinemas to explore. German authorities impounded Dilbar earlier this year after establishing it was linked to a Russian billionaire. According to the US Treasury Department, the yacht is now worth between $600 million and $700 million, with annual maintenance costs of about $60 million.

Blohm+Voss: ‘Eclipse’ — $600 Million

Blohm & Voss "Eclipse" Superyacht

The epic 533-foot Blohm+Voss superyacht Eclipse took half a decade to come to fruition before it was finally delivered to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2010. At that time, it was the largest yacht in the world and certainly one of the most expensive. It has now been 20-odd years and Eclipse still sits at the top of both lists and is estimated to be worth over $600 million. Designed inside and out by Terence Disdale, the vessel is equipped with 17 staterooms, a 185-foot-long owner’s deck with a palatial owner’s suite, a giant swimming pool that doubles as a dance floor, a gym, a beach club and a spa. Other highlights include a helicopter hangar with space for three choppers and a garage that can hold six tenders. On top of that, Eclipse has a top-end speed of 21 knots, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

Lürssen: ‘Azzam’ — $600 Million

most expensive celebrity yachts

Lürssen has proven itself adept at delivering sizable (and expensive) vessels. In fact, the German yard is behind the world’s longest superyacht, which reportedly set one private owner back more than $600 million. Delivered in 2013, Azzam measures just shy of 593 feet and offers a volume of 13,136 GT. Penned by Nauta Yacht, the yacht’s exterior is characterized by a long, sleek forward area and a series of tiers ascending to the skydeck. The interior, meanwhile, was brought to life by Christophe Leoni and showcases luxurious decor inspired by the Empire style of the early 19th century. Azzam is no slouch on the high seas, either, with a top speed of more than 30 knots. Astonishingly, the behemoth only took three years to build after one year of engineering. Azzam also underwent a refit in 2020 that likely resulted in a few more dollars being spent on her.

Lürssen: ‘Al Said’ — $600 Million

most expensive celebrity yachts

Another nine-figure Lürssen megayacht on the list is Al Saïd . Delivered in 2008, the 508-footer reportedly set the Sultan of Oman roughly $600 million and, well, you can tell. Designed by Espen Øino, Al Saïd ’s exterior is reminiscent of a classic cruise liner with the twin-exhaust stacks in the center of the superstructure. Sporting a steel hull and lightweight aluminum superstructure, the yacht is capable of 25 knots flat out, with a cruising speed of 22 knots. Inside, meanwhile, the contemporary interior was penned by Redman Whiteley Dixon. Highlights include a concert hall that can hold a 50-piece orchestra.

Lürssen: ‘A+’ (Topaz) — $527 Million

Lürssen Topaz largest yachts in the world

Lürssen megayacht A+ , previously known as Topaz , reportedly cost approximately $527 million (€400 million) to come to fruition. It is the fourth-largest yacht ever built by the German shipyard and was launched back in 2012. It’s rumored that Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan, the deputy prime minister of the UAE and owner of Manchester City Football Club, took delivery of the vessel and is the current owner. A+ ’s exterior was penned by Tim Heywood Designs, while her interior was brought to life by Terence Disdale. She is equipped with cabins for 62 guests and 72 crew, as well as two helipads, a pool and a large swim platform. What more do you need?

Fincantieri: ‘Serene’ — $444 Million

A float plane flies over the super yacht Serene during take off in Ketchikan, Alaska Friday morning. Work began on the 493-foot 3-inch yacht in 2007 by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The ship has a crew of 52 and room for 24 guests. The seven deck vessel has landing capabilities for two helicopters and for a submarine and a sea water pool. (AP Photo/Ketchikan Daily News, Hall Anderson)

Fincantieri’s first superyacht turned out to be big in terms of both proportions and price. The 439-footer was the largest yacht ever launched in Italy when it hit the water in 2011 and cost approximately $444 million (€450 million) to complete. Designed by Espen Øino, the seven-deck vessel is characterized by a sleek blue hull, a contrasting white superstructure and a ton of racy curves. She’s brimming with amenities, too, including an enclosed winter garden for dining in any season, a tender garage large enough to house a submarine and a supersized swimming pool for soaking. She also has two helipads and a hangar to facilitate comings and goings. Although the details of Serene ’s interior remain tightly under wraps, we do know Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design penned the 43,056-square-foot living quarters.

Platinum Yachts: ‘Dubai’ — $400 Million

DUBAI UAE - DEC 16: Dubai - yacht of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai. December 16 2014 in Dubai UAE

Dubai was, quite literally, built for royalty at a princely fee of roughly $400 million. The superyacht was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei as a joint project between Blohm+Voss and Lürssen. The duo only got to finish the bare hull and skeletal superstructure before construction was halted in 1998. The incomplete design was then sold to the government of Dubai and turned into a royal yacht for the country’s ruler. The 532-footer, which was finished off by Platinum Yachts, was delivered to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2006. Penned by Winch Design, Dubai spans seven decks and can sleep 24 guests and 88 crew. Befitting a sheikh, she is also equipped with a landing pad for a Black Hawk helicopter, a submarine garage, a disco and a cinema.

Blohm+Voss : ‘Motor Yacht A’ — $300 Million

Motor Yacht A 2008

Legend has it that architect Philippe Starck sketched the design for Motor Yacht A on a napkin in a matter of minutes. Blohm + Voss then sold the superyacht for approximately $300 million. Commissioned by Russian industrialist Andrey Melnichenko, the 390-footer is characterized by a minimalist exterior and a highly distinctive pelican bow that cuts a striking silhouette. With a beam of 62 feet, the vessel offers a generous interior volume of 5,500 GT. She offers accommodation for 14 guests and 42 crew. She also has no less than three swimming pools, one of which has a glass bottom that creates a wow factor on the deck below. Melnichenko kept  Motor Yacht A for nearly a decade before replacing it with Nobiskrug’s Sailing Yacht A . The 468-footer is not only the largest sailing yacht in the world, but also the most expensive with an estimated value of $578 million .

Lürssen: ‘Radiant’ — $300 Million

most expensive celebrity yachts

The tale behind Radiant ’s price tag is almost as long as the 360-footer itself. Rumor has it, the superyacht was built for Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky at a cost of roughly $149 million (€148.5 million). After Berezovsky ran into financial difficulties, he asked Edmiston to list the vessel for $352 million (€350 million) and it eventually sold for a hair under that. Delivered in 2010, Radiant sports a steel hull, an aluminum superstructure and gorgeous teak decking. She can comfortably accommodate up to 20 guests in 10 suites, as well as up to 44 crew. Her top-tier amenities include a movie theatre, a beauty salon, a beach club, a gym, a pool, a Jacuzzi, a helipad and a fully stocked tender garage. Certainly sounds worthy of $300 million to us.

Lürssen: ‘Pelorus’ — $300 Million

most expensive celebrity yachts

In the late ‘90s, Saudi Arabian businessman Abdulmohsen Abdulmalik Al-Sheikh commissioned Lürssen to create Pelorus . The 377-footer hit the seas in 2003 and was the 11th-largest yacht in the world at the time. During her maiden voyage, Pelorus was sold to Roman Abramovich. The Russian entrepreneur had it altered by Blohm & Voss, adding a second helipad and other lavish amenities. Fast forward to 2009, Irina Abramovich received the yacht as part of her divorce settlement from Roman. She sold it to David Geffen in 2011 via broker Merle Wood for $300 million. Pelorus features a sleek exterior designed by Tim Heywood and a beachy chic interior penned by Terence Disdale. She has several terraces with doors that open out to the sea to create a true indoor/outdoor feel.

Peters Werft: ‘Al Mirqab’ — $300 Million

most expensive celebrity yachts

The 436-foot Al Mirqab is one of the largest yachts in the world and has a price tag to match. Launched in 2008, the $300 million vessel was built for Qatar’s former prime minister under the supervision of Kusch Yachts in the Peters Werft shipyard in Germany. Penned by Tim Heywood, the elegant exterior pairs a long, navy-blue hull with a contrasting white superstructure. The interior, meanwhile, was brought to life by Andrew Winch and has won several awards. Arguably, the most striking feature is the Arabic-influenced motifs on the marble floors. Another highlight is the swimming pool on the lower deck, which can be opened up to the sea via side hatches in the hull. Al Mirqab has staterooms for 36, and crew quarters for 45. She was also treated to a refit in 2014 and thus looks fresher than your average 14-year-old vessel.

Abeking & Rasmussen: ‘Aviva’ — $250 Million

most expensive celebrity yachts

Abeking & Rasmussen’s Aviva shows what kind of lavish amenities you can get with $250 million. The 323-footer, which was delivered in 2017, features the largest gym on any yacht. It’s so big, in fact, that it houses a full-size paddle tennis court that pulls double duty as a soccer field when the nets are down. Penned by Toby Silverton and Reymond Langton Design, Aviva pairs a curvacious blue exterior with a chic modern interior. She is equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that enables her to reach up to 11 knots using only electric motors or 20 knots with the addition of diesel power. The yacht is reportedly the sequel to another smaller Aviva that was delivered to British billionaire Joe Lewis in 2007. The yacht was launched just 33 months after the signing of the contract, which is quite an impressive feat given the complexity and scope of the project.

Lürssen: ‘Octopus’ — $200 Million

Octopus Superyacht Exterior

Launched in 2003 at a cost of approximately $200 million, Octopus was built by Lürssen for late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The 414-footer is regularly loaned out for expeditions and scientific research initiatives. A true explorer, it features a dive center with a hyperbaric chamber, a yellow submarine named Pagoo and a remotely operated vehicle that can dive thousands of feet below the surface. Of course, this is complemented by state-of-the-art research technology. In addition, Octopus features two helipads, a hangar and seven tenders to facilitate comings and goings. She is also equipped with 13 staterooms, several bars, a recording studio, a cinema, a spa, a gym, a library and a basketball court. (You might remember Allen once owned the Portland Trail Blazers.) What’s more, Octopus appears to be climbing in price as time goes on. In 2019, the vessel was listed for sale for a cool $325 million .

Lürssen: ‘Rising Sun’ — $200 Million

Lürssen Rising Sun superyacht

Rising Sun was designed by one of the brightest minds in the industry: the late, legendary Jon Bannenberg. In fact, it was the last yacht the Australian designer penned before he died in 2002. The $200 million vessel was built by Lürssen and delivered to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison two years later in 2004. The 138-footer is characterized by large expanses of glass that let in plenty of the sun’s rays. In addition, it offers 86,000 square feet of living space brought to life by Seccombe Design. There are nine cabins for up to 18 guests and generous crew quarters for up to 46 crew. Elsewhere, you’ll find a gym, a cinema, a wine cellar and a basketball court. As for grunt, Rising Sun promises a maximum speed of 28 knots and a cruising speed of 26 knots. She was last refitted in 2011 and is currently owned by billionaire David Geffen.

Lürssen: ‘Solandge’ — $150 Million

Lürssen’s Solandge

Lürssen’s Solandge is rumored to have cost $150 million to come to fruition, and you can tell. Delivered in 2013, the 279-footer is replete with the finest materials. The floor, for example, sports no less than 50 types of exotic wood. There are also around 50 samples of natural stone in the bathrooms. Designed by Espen Øino, Solandge has a sleek exterior with elegant, clean lines. Aileen Rodriguez’s interior, meanwhile, is full to the brim with extravagant amenities. The spa comprises multiple pools on different decks, along with a hammam and a sauna. In addition, the yacht features a beauty salon is equipped with a sink and crane that together creates “snow” à la a snow room, as well as a gym and a massage room. As Lürssen puts it, Solandge was built with pure yachting pleasure in mind.

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

  • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
  • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
  • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

Insider Today

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

most expensive celebrity yachts

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

most expensive celebrity yachts

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

most expensive celebrity yachts

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

most expensive celebrity yachts

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

most expensive celebrity yachts

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

most expensive celebrity yachts

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

most expensive celebrity yachts

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

most expensive celebrity yachts

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Most Expensive Cars in the World: Top 25

From the rolls-royce boat tail to multiple hypercars by bugatti, these are the most expensive cars in the world..

Bugatti Profilee

At duPont REGISTRY, our knowledge of luxury automobiles is unmatched. Over time, we’ve seen stunning vehicles, both old and new, emerge from the world of luxury car manufacturing and, with them, similarly stupefying price tags, ostensibly in keeping with the perfection of design and engineering that accompanied them. In light of this, we’ve put together what is quite possibly the most rigorous selection out there that features the 25 most expensive cars in the world, going strictly by their original market prices and not by the tens of millions that many of them bring in at the auction block or in private sales.

Our list includes some of the world’s best-known and most desirable carmakers, makers at the top of their game. From Ferrari’s engineering to Bugatti’s technology, Koenigsegg’s design to Rolls-Royce’s luxury, and Pagani’s art, these brands represent the pinnacle of road cars in terms of luxury and performance. These brands have defined luxury and exclusivity for many years, and their vehicles have set the benchmark for what is possible in luxury cars.

The most expensive car ever sold in the world is the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, which sold for $142 million in 2022 through RM Sotheby’s. The sale was completed on behalf of Mercedes-Benz during a very special auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

The most expensive new production car would have to be the Rolls-Royce Droptail, which has an estimated price of over $30 million. This is what prompted us to make this the cover car for our November 2023 issue.

No, and with the most expensive car in the world being the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé with a sale price of $142 million, we’re far from a car hitting that mark.

What’s the most expensive car in the world? Just search this page, which compiles all current list holders for this record: a collection that almost certainly includes the latest cars to incite such fantasies, expanding the parameters of opulence and price for automobiles sold today. You will find the most expensive vehicle in the world right on this page. While these aren’t the fastest 0 to 60 mph cars in the world or the cars with the fastest quarter mile times , there are some insanely quick cars, as well as some that take opulence to another level.

25. Ferrari F60 America: $2.6 million

25. Ferrari F60 America Price: $2.6 million

The F12berlinetta-based F60 America was a Ferrari built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ferrari’s U.S. operations. It was released on 10/10/14, and with only ten examples produced, it did so quite auspiciously. With an open-top, a V12 good for 730 horsepower, and a gorgeous blue color scheme reminiscent of the historical NART livery, what more could an American Ferrari lover want?

24. Aston Martin Valkyrie: $2.6 million

24. Aston Martin Valkyrie Price: $2.6 million

Like Mercedes-AMG did with the One, Aston Martin poured all their Formula One knowledge, experience, and engineering talent into the Valkyrie, and what resulted is a truly formidable car that looks the part as well. A Cosworth-developed V12 is matched by exterior design and stance that makes the Valkyrie look like it could pounce at any moment, and it can.

23. Ferrari LaFerrari FXX-K Evo: $2.7 million

23. Ferrari LaFerrari FXX-K Evo Price: $2.7 million

We thought that Ferrari pushed its limits with the LaFerrari , being a hybrid hypercar in the Holy Trinity, but when they turned the LaFerrari into the track-only FXX-K, we were proved wrong. Only 40 units were produced, and all are kept by Ferrari to let their owners drive for track day events, which is a good thing because only Ferrari could keep a 1,036 horsepower car capable of 217 mph truly safe.

22. Koenigsegg Jesko: $2.8 million

22. Koenigsegg Jesko Price: $2.8 million

Anyone with the privilege of opening the “dihedral synchro-helix” doors of a Koenigsegg knows that something incredibly powerful (and costly) lies inside. This couldn’t be truer than in the case of the Jesko, as it seems that with each passing year, Koenigsegg’s capabilities get even more outlandish and unprecedented. With up to 1,603 horsepower, a top speed that we don’t even know yet, and creature comforts like power-adjustable seats and Apple CarPlay, the Jesko might be the best Koenigsegg yet.

21. Ferrari Pininfarina Sergio: $3 million

21. Ferrari Pininfarina Sergio Price: $3 million

A tribute to design house Pininfarina’s late former chairman, Sergio Pininfarina, this 458-based Barchetta is a beautiful tribute to the spirits of both Ferrari and Pininfarina alike. Pininfarina’s signature sweeping lines make the car into an ultra-futuristic, sculpted, and serene vehicle, with design elements that echo the iconic Ferrari Pininfarina Mythos concept of the 90s. Such an artful statement is surely worth its price.

20. Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport: $3.3 million

20. Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport Price: $3.3 million

Bugatti calls it “the purest Bugatti Chiron ever.” Substantial improvements in the chassis, gearbox, and engine back that claim up. For the onlooker, styling cues like the number on the grille echo Bugatti’s rich and proud racing heritage. If you want a Bugatti that strives to achieve the pinnacle of driving experience, the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is likely your best bet.

19. Mansory Vivere Bugatti Veyron: $3.4 million

19. Mansory Vivere Bugatti Veyron Price: $3.4 million

Mansory is a German coachbuilder known for making some of the most exciting, rare, luxurious, and expensive cars we’ve ever seen. One of their greatest efforts is the Vivere Bugatti Veyron , which is a modified Veyron that features a signature “V” design throughout and an impossibly classic black-and-white color scheme. Few cars match its price, but even fewer match its level of sophistication.

18. W Motors Lykan Hypersport: $3.4 million

18. W Motors Lykan Hypersport Price: $3.4 million

This car became quite notorious when it was seen skyscraper-hopping in Fast and Furious 7, but the Lykan Hypersport is a notorious exotic car in itself. Having doors that are somehow both suicide and scissor doors, holographic interior display, and literal diamonds in the headlights, W Motors didn’t even need a movie to get people talking about the Lykan.

17. Pagani Huayra Roadster BC: $3.5 million

17. Pagani Huayra Roadster BC Price: $3.5 million

It is meant to be the last Pagani Huayra , and that’s no surprise because it’s a car fit for a grand finale. Only 40 examples exist, and they are as gorgeous as they are powerful. A bright silver, black, and red color scheme with tan leather seats and a distinctive wood shift knob give the car the elegant, sporty look that only the best in the automotive world can offer. A removable carbon-fiber hardtop that makes the Roadster only 66 pounds heavier than it’s coupe counterpart adds bite to the Huayra BC Roadster’s bark, doing the model justice as it bows out.

16. Lamborghini Sian: $3.6 million

16. Lamborghini Sian Price: $3.6 million

The Sian is Lamborghini’s most innovative effort yet, with a hybrid system that uses lithium-ion supercapacitors to its advantage, making for a hybrid that doesn’t compromise weight for immense power. Drivers can expect 819 horsepower, 2.8 seconds to reach 60 mph, and a top speed of over 220 mph. And with design inspiration coming from the Countach, even at a glance, the Sian is unmistakably iconic.

15. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ and Chiron Super Sport: $3.9 million

15. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ and Chiron Super Sport Price: $3.9 million

It’s human nature to try to improve, to test the limits of whatever is in front of you. But nobody has done that quite like Bugatti for the past 15 or so years. They changed the world when the Veyron was found to be capable of 253 mph, and now they are changing the world again because the Chiron Super Sport 300+ can speed above 300 miles per hour. The price can easily be justified for the chance to travel at that velocity alone.

14. Lamborghini Veneno: $4.5 milion

14. Lamborghini Veneno Price: $4.5 milion

The Lamborghini, packed full of incredible innovation and stirring design, is surely worth all the hype and all the money, not least because it was a clear symbol to the world that Lamborghini had entered a new era. Squeezing 740 brake horsepower out of the Aventador’s V12 was the first part of the equation, with an entirely new but still very Lamborghini body design that was optimized for cooling and aerodynamics to follow. The Veneno was and is one of Lamborghini’s greatest icons.

13. Bugatti Bolide: $4.6 milion

13. Bugatti Bolide Price: $4.6 milion

The Bugatti Bolide is what happens when one of the world’s most historic automakers goes all out for the sake of performance. When it was first revealed, Bugatti had planned for this hypercar only to be a study project, but later on, they decided on a production run of 40 Bolide examples. The Bugatti Bolide is such a special car, in fact, that it was duPont REGISTRY’s November 2021 cover car. Each of these examples comes with a price tag of our million euros, or around $4.6 million USD.

12. Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita: $4.8 million

12. Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita Price: $4.8 million

The name “Trevita” is Swedish for “three whites,” which is what describes the Trevita’s completely unique and gorgeous finish. For this car, Koenigsegg developed a completely unique carbon fiber diamond weave to create its look. Because of how difficult this process was, only two Trevitas ended up being made, one of which was entrusted to Floyd Mayweather. It takes quite the car to justify that price, and the CCXR Trevita does the job.

11. Bugatti W16 Mistral: $5 million

11. Bugatti W16 Mistral Price: $5 million

The new Mistral will be the last of the W16-powered Bugatti road-going models, marking an end to an era. Because of this, the Bugatti W16 Mistral will certainly be a collector’s car for decades to come. For those who got in early and purchased one of the 99 examples planned in the production run, the starting price was set at just over $5 million. It should be noted that all of those 99 examples were already sold when the Mistral was revealed in August 2022.

10. Pagani Huayra Imola: $5.4 million

10. Pagani Huayra Imola Price: $5.4 million

The Huayra Imola is a car entirely dedicated to speed. Pagani even developed a special paint to finish the car in that saved 11 pounds of weight, achieving a dry weight of just 2,747 pounds. Combine that with 827 horsepower, and you end up with a car that is just about as formidable, unique, and extravagant as anything can get on the road.

9. Bugatti Divo: $5.9 million

9. Bugatti Divo Price: $5.9 million

As if Bugatti’s offerings weren’t serious enough, the Divo is just about as serious as any of their cars have ever gotten. While Bugattis are known for being cars that reach incredible speed in a straight line, the Bugatti Divo is also meant to dominate in the corners. And with an elongated, more aerodynamic body, increased downforce, and 1.6 Gs of lateral acceleration, that’s exactly what it does. With Bugatti always being at the forefront of performance, we had no clue that things could take a turn for the better.

8. Pagani Huayra Codalunga: $7.4 million

8. Pagani Huayra Codalunga Price: $7.4 million

Just five examples of the new Pagani Huayra Codalunga will be created, so seeing one of the world’s most expensive cars out on the road will be a rare event. This new model was created to be a tribute to the racing cars of the 1960s that were defined by the shapes created by the classic Italian coachbuilders. The most notable exterior feature of the Huayra Codalunga is the Long Tail, which houses a twin-turbo V12 engine that produces 840 horsepower.

7. Bugatti Centodieci: $9 million

7. Bugatti Centodieci Price: $9 million

The Bugatti Centodieci is an homage to a modern classic: the EB110. The 200+ mph icon of the 90s, combined with Bugatti’s body of work today, can only make for a truly amazing, one-of-a-kind, and inherently expensive car. There will only be 10 of these, which is unfortunate because nostalgia isn’t the only reason the Centodieci is amazing. It improves upon the Chiron, shedding nearly 45 pounds and adding downforce.

6. Bugatti Chiron Profilée: $10.8 million

6. Bugatti Chiron Profilée Price: $10.8 million

The Bugatti Chiron Profilée came into the world as a one-off creation that would be the final Chiron to be created featuring the legendary W16 engine. While the Chiron Profilée did not have an MSRP, it was auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s for an astonishing $10.8 million. That was enough to make the Chiron Profilée the most valuable new car ever to be sold at auction. That’s why it deserves to sit on this list.

5. Rolls-Royce Sweptail: $13 million

5. Rolls-Royce Sweptail Price: $13 million

The Sweptail’s defining feature and namesake is the tapered rear end, which evokes a yacht and the pure pleasure and luxury that only a Rolls-Royce can offer.  With a glass roof that extends from front to back and wood and leather decorating nearly every interior surface, the Sweptail is just like a yacht, but maybe even better; hence, it is priced like one.

4. Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta: $17.5 million

4. Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta Price: $17.5 million

The Pagani Zonda is a car we know to be epic and historic in the world of supercars. Its completely distinct look, formidable Mercedes-Benz 7.3 liter V-12, and outstanding performance have made it a classic and a legend. That makes a car like the HP Barchetta the perfect way to do it justice. As if the Zonda wasn’t eye-catching enough, the HP Barchetta features rear wheels that are partially covered by a carbon fiber panel and a roofless (and almost windshield-less) body design, hence the Barchetta name, making it truly deserving of the title of being one of the most expensive cars of all time.

3. Bugatti La Voiture Noire: $18+ million

3. Bugatti La Voiture Noire Price: $18+ million

This one-of-a-kind Bugatti, known as La Voiture Noire, pays homage to the legendary Type 57 Atlantic from Bugatti’s illustrious past. Designed to capture the Atlantic’s elegance, mystery, and aura, La Voiture Noire represents a contemporary reimagining of what many consider the perfect car. It features distinctive design elements reminiscent of the Atlantic, such as six exhaust tailpipes and a pronounced dorsal seam that runs the length of the vehicle, splitting it down the middle.

La Voiture Noire stands out for its breathtaking design and engineering excellence, making it one of the most expensive cars in the world. Its allure comes from its aesthetic beauty and technical prowess, reflecting Bugatti’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and performance.

2. Rolls-Royce Boat Tail: $28 million

2. Rolls-Royce Boat Tail Price: $28 million

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, an exquisite creation by Rolls-Royce Coachbuild, is among the most expensive cars in the world. It draws inspiration from the grace and elegance of nautical design. This automotive marvel is distinguished by its Caleidolegno veneer on the “Aft Deck,” a wrap-around windscreen, and numerous other maritime-inspired details. One of its most notable features is the rear compartment that transforms into a sophisticated hosting suite, perfect for luxurious al fresco dining experiences.

Further enhancing its exclusivity, the Boat Tail includes two custom-made BOVET 1822 reversible timepieces, which can either be worn or mounted on the dashboard as clocks. This level of customization and detail underscores Rolls-Royce’s commitment to unparalleled luxury. The Boat Tail made a significant impact with its debut at the prestigious Concours d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, setting a new standard for bespoke automotive luxury and craftsmanship.

1. Rolls-Royce Droptail: Over $30 million

1. Rolls-Royce Droptail Price: Over $30 million

The title of the world’s most expensive new production car currently belongs to the Rolls-Royce Droptail, a masterpiece of bespoke automotive luxury. Rolls-Royce has introduced this exclusive model with only two examples so far: the Amethyst and La Rose Noire Droptails, each showcasing unique themes and unparalleled craftsmanship. The plan includes crafting four Droptail cars, with each vehicle tailored specifically to the individual preferences and desires of its owner, embodying the pinnacle of personalized luxury.

The Droptail is the spiritual successor to the illustrious Rolls-Royce Boat Tail and the Sweptail, continuing a legacy of ultra-exclusive, coachbuilt automobiles. This model reflects the highest standards of design and engineering and represents a remarkable expression of status and prestige. With its distinct silhouette and exquisite attention to detail, the Droptail sets a new benchmark for luxury, pushing the boundaries of customization in the automotive industry.
