Bahamas Yacht Charter

A Bahamas yacht charter promises guests a slice of tropical perfection and unparalleled escapism. The idyllic chain of islands that form the Bahamas provides yacht charter guests with a decadent cocktail of sun-drenched sands (even pink ones), crystalline waters teeming with marine life, and diverse topography.

Comprising more than 700 heavenly islands with precious few inhabited, the cruising grounds of the Bahamas archipelago offer a fascinating mixture of seclusion and connectedness. Expect a gloriously slower pace of life that harmonizes with the gentle tide, blended with a fiesta of blazing color and soft-calypso: an endearingly exotic charter experience.

Silhouetted by coral cays, aquamarine shallows are garlanded with glistening coves and iridescent bays are often only three or four meters deep, making the Bahamas both a perennial family favorite and a jet-setter's paradise. It's ideal territory for shallow draft yachts or catamarans, who can cozy up to seldom-visited anchorages and soak up their celestial calm, or delve deeper for an aquatic adventure.

Bahamas Yacht Charters: At a Glance

  • Constant sunshine Its sun-drenched shores amid cinematic landscapes charm yacht charter guests all-year-round. A blissful sanctuary awaits you when you reach these islands.
  • 700 islands, cays, and islets Make up the achingly beautiful jigsaw that is the Bahamas archipelago; expect beaches and bays that make your heart sing as par for the course. You'll be spoilt for choice with stunning anchorages.
  • 4% cruising fee Attractively low fees help to make the Bahamas an enduringly popular yacht charter destination.
  • Easily accessible Reaching the Bahamas is a mere hours flight from Florida or three hours from New York and Toronto. The Bahamas also has excellent transport links to other worldwide destinations.
  • Tropical thrills The Bahamas is a place of endless adventure and intrigue: from swimming with inquisitive pigs and gliding alongside friendly nurse sharks; to strolling otherworldly pink beaches and diving into coral-filled caves that once appeared in a James Bond film. The list really does go on and on.
  • Shallow waters The Bahamas' alluringly clear waters aren't deep, so shallow draught motor yachts, sailing yachts or catamarans provide guests with more opportunities to admire the Bahamas' natural splendor.

Types of Charter Yachts in the Bahamas

Crewed motor yacht charters and luxury catamaran charters are undoubtedly the best way to discover the Bahamas.

As one of the most popular destinations for yacht charters in the Caribbean , guests have countless fleet options when it comes to a Bahamas crewed charter. If you are unsure whether to opt for a motor yacht, sailing yacht or catamaran to cruise Bahamian waters, here are some main points to consider:

Shallow Cruising Grounds

The waters all around the Bahamas are fairly shallow, often no more than 4 meters deep, and even less in some places. Therefore, yachts with shallow drafts make the ideal choice for luxury charters around this enchanting region.

Most sailing charter yachts come equipped with a retractable keel, facilitating access to the beautiful turquoise shallows, although larger sailing yachts may still find their draft too deep for some areas, even with their keel up!

To get around this, some of the larger luxury yachts drop their anchor further out into the deeper waters and use their onboard tenders to explore the area, where guests can experience the thrill of getting up close and personal with the archipelago’s astonishing marine fauna, including rays, sharks and inquisitive swimming pigs. The yachts’ tenders also enable even greater access to the Bahamas' myriad exquisite island reefs and blue lagoons.

Motor yacht charter in the Bahamas

A luxury motor yacht provides guests with a tranquil haven to uncover the startling beauty of the Bahamas. Whether you want to peacefully bronze under Bahamian rays or get out the jet skis and whizz around deserted islands, a crewed motor yacht charter in the Bahamas provides you with boundless itinerary options.

Sailing Yacht Charter in the Bahamas

Chartering a sailing yacht in the Bahamas means you can embrace all that these substantially beautiful islands have to offer. Cruising further afield to otherwise inaccessible sleepy villages with chalk-white beaches and waters suffused with a pale aqua glow is worth incorporating into any itinerary.

Catamaran Charter in the Bahamas

Given that the majority of catamarans have shallow drafts, crewed catamaran charters are a highly popular choice for Bahamas vacations. As you can cruise close to the cays, guests can savor the liberating feeling of being able to jump off-board at almost any point. Whether it's to dive amid sunken shipwrecks and admire shoals of fish that shimmy through fronds of coral in a kaleidoscope of color or to dance the night away at a private island under a blanket of stars; the choice is all yours.

How Much Does It Cost To Charter a Yacht in the Bahamas?

Bahamas yacht charters are plentiful, which means there are a vast array of motor yacht and catamaran charters to suit every type of budget. The average prices for motor and sailing yacht charters in the Bahamas are as follows;

For motor yacht rentals in Bahamas, prices can range from $42,100 to $1.47m per week, plus expenses

For luxury sailing yacht rentals in Bahamas, prices can go from $30,000 to $343,476 weekly, plus expenses

Tax for Yacht Charters in the Bahamas

What is the cost of tax for yacht charters in the Bahamas? From the 1st of July 2022, a new 10% VAT rate will be levied on the total charter fee, and is applicable to all yachts cruising in Bahamian waters. The new 10% levy does not replace the current 4% cruising fee which remains payable to the Port Department.

All yachts wishing to cruise within the archipelago must now register for VAT in the Bahamas and receive a Bahamian TIN number.

Please consult your chosen yacht charter broker who will be able to offer personalized advice on VAT and any other business for your next Bahamas yacht charter.

Foreign-Flagged Yachts in US Waters

There are strict and complicated rules governing commercial yacht charters (non-private) cruising US waters, which in general means that only US-flagged yachts or US built yachts with a coastwise endorsement can conduct yacht charters in the US. Furthermore, yachts that are available for charter are considered to be "engaging in a trade" and thus ineligible for a US cruising licence. Most luxury charter yachts are also not US duty paid.

As the majority of the charter fleet are foreign-flagged yachts, Bahamas yacht charters will likely begin outside of the US, usually in the Bahamian capital of Nassau where there is a large busy international airport.

That said, it is possible to pick-up charter guests in the US so long as the yacht's next port of call is outside of US waters. This can be a good option for those wishing to meet the boat in Florida and cruise down to the Bahamas from here.

Where Should I Begin My Yacht Charter in the Bahamas?

The vast majority of yacht charters in the Bahamas embark and disembark in the country's picturesque capital  Nassau , which is home to its best-known international ports, dotted with top-rung marinas all along its azure waters. The city is justly renowned for its throng of fine-dining options, boutiques, hip eateries, and casinos fringed by towering palm trees. Nassau is also conveniently located for cruising to the Exumas and beyond.

Atlantis Resort, Nassau

For a real respite from the crowds, it's common for yacht charter guests to embark their vessel at Marsh Harbor on the  Abaco Islands ,  where you can trace the mesmerizing string of sandy cays that can be found here. Its shores, a serene and shimmering topaz, are perfect for dropping anchor and taking the toys for a spin.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Bahamas by Yacht?

One of the great joys of choosing a Bahamas yacht charter is that its balmy climes and shallow waters make it more or less ideal to cruise all-year-round* .  But the Bahamas does have a peak season from mid-December to mid-April. The average temperatures of both Bahamian summers and winters are unsurprisingly tropical: hovering between 24-29 degrees and rarely dipping below this.

Palm tree lined beach in the Bahamas

During the summertime (from May until October), guests can expect endless sunshine and some humidity, while from November until April, the Bahamas has a slightly cooler temperature and colder waters.

*However, whilst Bahamian weather is pleasingly warm all-year the islands do fall within the hurricane belt, running from June until the end of November along the US East Coast and the Caribbean. The Western Caribbean's own hurricane season usually starts from mid-September until early November.

Nevertheless, it is worth keeping in mind that hurricanes in the Bahamas are fairly infrequent, and even less so than on the US East Coast.

Marinas in the Bahamas

It is not hyperbole to say that the Bahamas offers some of the most spectacular marinas in the world: from glamorous hotspots replete with award-winning restaurants, designer stores, and buzzing beach bars, to the exquisite barefoot luxury that emanates from the less frequented.

Marina in the Bahamas

A slew of activities is on offer here, including bonefishing, ocean fishing, dolphin watching, golfing, and snorkeling. And that's not even to mention the dizzying array of casinos, water parks, and marine reserves you can also find. Simply put, marinas in the Bahamas are simply of the finest caliber.

But which marinas are the best? Below are some charter favorites:

  • Hurricane Hole Superyacht Marina : the newly renovated marina at Paradise Landing close to the famous Atlantis Resort in Nassau offers a raft of 5-star amenities, wellness facilities and world-class retail outlets, not to mention exclusive restaurants and bars, alongside an on-site customs facility and slips catering to yachts up to 420ft (128m) LOA.
  • Treasure Cay Beach, Marina and Golf Resort (The Abacos): well-protected deep water marina, with excellent provisioning. Features an outstanding golf course, as well a spa for an extra dose of pampering. Excursions to see the delightful water-bound pigs can also be arranged here. It offers a 164-berth capacity up to 46m.
  • Green Turtle Club and Marina (The Abacos): tranquil and conveniently located to Abaco's hotspots as well as a perfect spot for beach hikes and land-based activities. Accommodates 40 berths up to 39m.
  • Atlantis Marina: iconic megayacht marina featuring a protected harbor with 63 berths up to 67m. Has an extensive number of facilities including a golf course, casino, spa, water park, and more. You can also arrange swimming with dolphins excursions here.
  • Emerald Bay Marina (The Exumas): large superyacht marina that has a berth capacity of 150 for yachts up to 79m. Within easy reach of many mesmerizing cays, including Cave Cay and Staniel Cay.
  • Palm Cay Marina (Nassau): ideal jumping point for exploring Paradise Island and the Exumas, with state-of-the-art facilities and amenities. 194 berth capacity up to 33m.
  • Highbourne Cay Marina: exclusive marina on a privately owned island, seen as the gateway to the Exumas. Accommodates up to 26 berths.

Popular Anchorages in the Bahamas

Sea turtle, coral reef and white sandy seabed. Tropical seascape with swimming turtle.

The Bahamas has jaw-dropping anchorages in abundance, flecked all along the 590-mile-long archipelago.

In the Exumas , you must cruise towards Leaf Cay to meet the colony of stocky but amiable Iguanas who call it home. You won't miss them: they'll be ready and waiting to greet you when you drop anchor. You should also pay a visit to  Staniel Cay, where the famed  Thunderball Grotto ( named after the 1965 James Bond film) is located, to see a cave illuminated by light and flourishes of angelfish. Closeby, you'll find Big Major Cay's  swimming pigs, who have a seemingly never-ending capacity for treats, and Shroud Cay's sea turtles contently floating amid a dramatic underwater backdrop. Simply put, it's a wildlife lover's paradise.

In the Abacos, head south to the isolated Great Guana Cay and  spend an afternoon snorkeling around the marine park, or alternatively, head straight to its golf course. Further north, you'll find Green Turtle Cay : where fishing boats stand charmingly in front of timber houses in a perfectly graduated shade of pastels. Swimming pigs (yes, there's even more here!) are located in nearby Noname Cay . And last but not least, bathe in the calm, warm shores of  Treasure Cay,  where you will find some of the best beaches in the world.

Elsewhere, other popular anchorages include those in  Eleuthera , an island steeped in cultural significance but manages to retain its erstwhile charm. Set towards  St. George's Cay to drink up the peaceful ambiance of Spanish Wells beach  and meander the historic  Governor's Harbor.

Booking Advice from the Experts

We strongly recommend booking with your yacht charter broker at least three to six months in advance, as the Bahamas is a highly popular Caribbean luxury yacht charter destination. By doing so, you will increase the likelihood of securing your preferred dates and you will have a greater selection of yachts on offer to choose from.

This also ensures your broker has enough time to craft a personalized itinerary and secure a berth at a popular marina.

Local Insight

Diving in the Bahamas

  • Keep in mind that the endless sunshine from mid-December until April attracts a high number of visitors to this idyllic location, and this is when the Bahamas is usually at its busiest.
  • New Providence Island (where Nassau and the extraordinary Atlantis Resort and Marina are situated) tends to be heaving with cruise ships. If you are looking for a calmer charter, this is worth taking into consideration.
  • Weather conditions and wind strength play a crucial role in anchorage spots in the Bahamas, so plan any overnight anchorages accordingly.
  • Some anchorages can be a bit of a challenge to set: it's common for heavy grass to cover a large section of some of the better spots to drop anchor
  • Anchorages that appear to have a sandy bottom can oftentimes be just a thin layer of sand over a coral reef or rock, making it difficult to dig the anchor in. Don't be misled by them!

Most Popular Superyacht Hotspots in the Bahamas

Treasure Cay Abaco Bahamas beach

In the north of the archipelago you'll find the Abacos : widely considered to be the boating capital of the Bahamas thanks to its unique geography. Epitomising laid-back Bahamian living, an Abacos yacht charter is ideal for those in search of stillness and solitude. Soak up its subtle alchemy at the vast 2,100 marine reserve in Pelican Cay,  fringed by blossoming coral, tame sea turtles, and dancing angelfish, or explore the superb surfing opportunities at Fowl Cays . For a journey through vivid color, pass a leisurely morning in nearby  Hope Tow n, admiring crayon-hued Bahamian architecture and  Elbow Cay's candy-striped lighthouse whilst drinking in their unpretentious ambiance.

After an afternoon spent floating on a late-summer heat haze, further on to Green Turtle Cay and sip on that famous Bahamian cocktail, the Goombay Smash, by a seafront taverna as the sun casts a peachy glow. Of course, no visit to the Abacos would be complete without a trip to the acclaimed  Treasure Cay Beach : its milky white sands and cyan shallows see it routinely end up on the world's most beautiful beaches list.

pig swimming in waters, the Exumas, Bahamas

Home to 365 cays, days here could easily drift by diving off burnished rocks until the sun slowly slinks away. Life truly does revolve around the water in the Exumas, so think every watersport you could possibly imagine is a go here. Plus, it's the perfect shallow cruising ground for yacht charters, with no cruise ships in sight making it a discerning choice for those looking for repose.

Sailing towards Big Major's Cay is love at first sight for most: it's where you will find Pig Beach ,  and its utterly charming piggies gliding surprisingly effortlessly across the water. Nearby, plunge into the sea with nurse sharks at Compass Cay before ending the day sauntering along the remote  Three Sisters Beach as the sunsets. Whilst you are here, go onshore and absorb Bahamian culture to its fullest in  Georgetown.

long stretch of beach on Eleuthera, Bahamas

An Eleuthera yacht charter has come to encapsulate the island's name, which in Greek means 'freedom'. Secluded, slender, and over 100 miles long, Eleuthera is unquestionably the prettiest out of the Out Islands, fully earning its name as the Nantucket of the Caribbean. With the island's soft, salmon-colored sandy beaches and pastel-painted houses set among pineapple fields, it's hard not to become infatuated by its perfectly-packaged tropical charms.

Make sure you also visit the historic capital  Governor's Harbor  and the verdant  Hatchet Bay whilst you are cruising its unspoiled shores.

Harbour Island

stunning pink sandy beach in bahamas

Situated in the northwest of Eleuthera, Harbor Island is renowned for its astonishing Pink Sand Beach , which gets its unique rosy hue from the presence of millions of tiny crushed coral seashells. Packing a powerful punch to the senses, this seemingly endless stretch of sand which is cool-to-the-touch (and ideal for barefoot walking) extends over three miles and adored by the well-heeled. And you'll understand in an instant why when you visit.  Languid afternoons spent upon its long arc of soft sugar-textured sand, hugged by pale-blue waters and bathed in golden light will linger long in your memory.

But that's not all Harbor Island has to offer. It would be remiss not to mention Harbor Island's lively night scene, and the number of sophisticated boutiques huddled here: with Dunmore Town the ultimate go-to destination for designer wear.

Bahamas Yacht Charter Q&A

Your vessel will need to have a shallow draft (no more than 4m) as Bahamas waters aren't deep. If you would like to visit the Bahamas by superyacht, it will need to have a shallow draft below 4m or a retractable keel to cruise comfortably and make the most of the idyllic anchorages found here.

Browse with ease on our site a wide-ranging selection of motor yachts, sailing yachts, and catamarans for charter in the Bahamas. Select by your chosen dates, number of guests, yacht type, features, and preferred onboard toys and we'll show you what's available.

If you decide to make an enquiry, a yacht charter broker will then contact you to provide you with a custom charter proposal based on your needs.

You can also reach out to your yacht charter broker directly, and they will be able to research for you the ideal yacht charter in the Bahamas.

Mid-December to mid-April is the Bahamas' peak season, characterized by endless sunshine and pleasingly warm waters.

Nassau is the invariably popular choice to begin a Bahamas yacht charter. Not only is the city astoundingly beautiful and replete with world-class marinas, hip boutiques, restaurants, and more, but reaching other Bahamas destinations like the Exumas is a breeze.

In most cases, a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee is required as a deposit to secure your luxury yacht charter, which is payable once the contract has been signed.

The Bahamas is a highly popular yacht charter destination, which for guests means there is a yacht to suit practically every budget.

When booking, keep in mind the additional costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely tax and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). Typically set at 30% of the charter fee, the APA is paid in advance and covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food,  drinks, as well as any special requests (such as for tenders that are not carried by yacht, equipment hire, etc.)

charter yacht from florida to bahamas

Experience the perfect tropical vacation on a yacht charter visiting the sandy atoll  islands that make up the Bahamas.

charter yacht from florida to bahamas

The Bahamas is a close international destination to the USA with hundreds of small islands and lots of reefs. Shallow water makes this a great area for power yachts and catamarans.

This is a three season destination — spring, summer and fall. Winter can be cold when those “northers” blow down from New England — 50F is too cold for swimming!

Fly from Florida to the Bahamas

The distance from Florida to the Bahamas is not too great for yachts to travel, but crossing the Gulfstream where the current goes against the prevailing winds can be extremely uncomfortable. Start in Nassau and see the Exumas or travel to the Abacos for a very away-from-it-all experience. The Bahamas is often a base for large motor yachts from March through June with wonderful fishing and scuba diving.

Or head further south to the isolated and quiet island country of the Turks and Caicos for fishing, diving, and snorkeling.

maverick spinnaker

The 70 ft Sunreef catamaran yacht is available for charters in the Bahamas, the Abacos or Exumas!

MAVERICK offers a flexible charter layout great for families consisting of 3 VIP double cabins with king beds, one of which has a very small Pullman intended for a baby (1.2m/ 4ft long). There is also another guest cabin with 2 single beds and a Pullman (only for 1 small child), and one single forepeak cabin, which is only for 1 person with entrance only from the outside and no bathroom.

Try Before You Buy

Ready to buy a large yacht? Many yachts will be based in the Bahamas if they are actively for sale. Plan a ‘try before you buy’ charter to see if that dream boat meets expectations.

A Bahamas Yacht Charter - Where to start from.

You have come to the right place to learn about options to consider on a private yacht charter in the Bahamas, what type of yacht might work best, what’s involved in choosing and booking a private yachts, and how unique your Bahamas charter can be.

Charter a yacht in Nassau

Central Bahamas

Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Nassau is the quintessential Bahamas hot spot! The town of Nassau is centrally located on New Providence Island with a large International airport and major resorts. Many Bahamas charters start here for its convenience to both the Exumas and Eleuthera. Eleuthera is a Bahamian island bordering the Atlantic to the east, and it is a dream Bahamas destination. The sand is pink and the houses are painted in picture perfect bright colors. Eleuthera is warm and inviting, and one can start a vacation there or ideally start in Nassau.

Charter a yacht in the Exumas

Southern Bahamas

The islands of the Exumas are picture book perfect in every way and one of the most popular destinations for Bahamas yacht charters, with a typical boarding in Nassau. The beaches are beautiful, the area is secluded, and the natural wildlife is exotic and plentiful. The Exuma Land and Sea Park is part of what allows this part of the Bahamas to remain so perfect. Further south would be the Turks and Caicos which are not common for bahamas charters with few yachts based there, if any.

Charter a yacht in the Abacos

Northern Bahamas

The Abacos Islands are amoungst the more Northern part of the Bahamas and are a much less travelled Bahamas yacht charter destination. When you leave the quiet comfort of your charter yacht, you will be pleasantly surprised to find the warm atmosphere of the islands itself. There are smaller cays to the east and north such as Treasure Cay, Man O'War, Green Turtle, and Elbow Cay to name a few - who could resist names such as these? The Abacos, while not as popular a Bahamas yacht destination, can be an option. Freeport and Grand Bahama are much more popular for land based vacations than charters.

Be Confident Booking Your Bahamas Yacht charter.

When planning a vacation of this magnitude confidence is of the utmost importance. You need to feel confident in the people you are working with, so that you can relax and enjoy your vacation and the time leading up to it. We encourage clients to call us and benefit from our decades of booking Bahamas yacht charters for clients on yachts large and small. You'll speak to a experienced authority on fully crewed Bahamas yacht charters, and there is no obligation on your end. Best of all, our services are free to you.

Will it be custom planned?

Yes, like all of the crewed charters we book, will be custom planned just for you! You will visit the islands you want to visit, when you want to visit them, and stay as long as you wish! Your captain will map out an itinerary to suit you based on your preferences, but remember, it's flexible! Interested in seeing a sample cruise itinerary ?

When to Charter in The Bahamas.

There are but a few variations to The Bahamas being a year-round yachting destination. As these islands share weather trends with southern Florida, winters are much warmer than most of the United States; however there can be an occasional cool down from time to time. The summers have a much more stable weather pattern. The waters are calm and the days are hot, with an average temperature of 85 degrees. To get a feel for what the weather looks like from month to month, check out Bahamas weather .

Chartering in the Bahamas, a Destination for Every Season

The Bahamas are a year-round yacht charter destination with weather patterns that closely mirror South Florida, making for an incredible climate for vacationing with a boat charter. Bahamas winters are cooler than the rest of the Caribbean, and temperatures can occasionally drop to the mid-to-low 60s, especially between December and February. Late spring and early summer have the best weather for boat rentals, with warm temperatures, calmer waters, sunny skies, and fair winds.

Bahamas Crewed Motor Yacht Charters

Chartering your own private motor yacht is the best way to see the islands of the Bahamas. Crewed motor yachts are the perfect way to island-hop, seeing as many attractions as possible and then relaxing offshore to enjoy water sports and beachside activities. Motor boats are the most popular type of yacht charter in the Bahamas. Crewed motor yachts also carry a wide range of recreational gear, from wakeboards and standup paddleboards to kayaks and Jet Skis, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

With architecture inspired by British settlers, Eleuthera is a casual island of rocky bluffs and low-lying wetlands with magnificent coral reef backdrops. Eleuthera’s beaches are world-famous. Surfer’s Beach is just two miles south of Gregory Town, where southwest winds blow breaks in from the Atlantic. It’s a surfing and kite-surfing mecca! Even if you just want to watch, the two-mile stretch of beach has some of the best sugary-soft white sand in the Bahamas.

Harbour Island

Northwest of Eleuthera lies Harbour Island, which was named by Travel + Leisure magazine as “the best island in the Caribbean” not once but twice. Known for its romantic pink-sand beaches, upscale shore-side accommodations, and picturesque scenery, Harbour Island offers plenty for charter guests to explore.

Located just south of Miami, the two main islands, Great Abaco and Little Abaco, as well as picturesque cays offer the adventurer truly incredible beaches and plenty to do, from deep-sea fishing to snorkeling in six amazing national parks. This is the boating capital of the Bahamas, and sailing on a luxury yacht through its mangrove-covered islands and cays will leave you with the quintessential Caribbean memory.

Bahamas Yacht Charters: What To See & Do

The Bahamas is one of the world’s most revered destinations for yacht rentals. The Bahamas are a paradise of postcard-worthy beaches, beautiful tropical weather, and amazing island adventures.

Some of the Greatest Beaches in the World

The beaches of the Bahamas form such an extraordinary collection of sand and warm turquoise waters that astronauts have praised them from space.

Whether you’d like to swim or snorkel, truly relax on a deserted beach, or head to the waves for some water sports, the Bahamas has plenty of stretches of sand for fun and adventure. Favorites include Pig Beach on Big Major Cay, Dean’s Blue Hole in the Exumas, Rose Island near Nassau, Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island, Surfer’s Beach on Eleuthera, and Guana Cay and Tahiti Beach in the Abacos.

When you think you’ve tried them all, find your own deserted stretch of sand along an unnamed island to enjoy sunset cocktails or even a private beach picnic.

Crystal-Clear, Aquamarine Waters

The waters of the Bahamas are bathwater-warm year-round, hovering in the low 80s most of the year. Yet beyond their beckoning warmth, they’re also the clearest in all of the Caribbean. Expect 100-foot visibility in most seasons. That makes this the perfect destination for a cruising adventure. Whether you’d like to explore the vibrant and colorful corals, swim with sharks, or dive a blue hole, the islands’ inviting waters are the perfect setting.

Amazing Marine Life

The waters of the Bahamas boast a variety of marine ecosystems and an unparalleled opportunity to experience sea life. Witness massive humpbacks breaking surface waters, or swim with exotic tropical reef fish at James Bond’s Thunderball Grotto. Find world-class marlins and sailfish while deep-sea fishing in the Abacos. Stand at the bottom of the awe-inspiring shark exhibit at Atlantis, or feed stingrays in the lagoon on Paradise Island. Find Dolphin Cay and swim with dolphins at one of the largest marine habitats and animal rescue facilities in the world. With a Bahamas yacht charter, you can swim with the pigs at Pig Beach at Big Major Cay or dive into Compass Cay and get so close to nurse sharks that you can touch them!

World-Class Sporting Adventures

The warm turquoise seas of the Bahamas offer more than just wildlife. The clear, shallow waters are also the world’s largest playground. You can really do it all in the water: paddle-boarding, Jet Ski tours, kayaking hidden coves, wakeboarding, knee-boarding, and water-skiing. Plus, most crewed charter yachts include a garage of gear to help you have fun in the water.

Head to Surfer’s Beach in Eleuthera for big wintertime swells; it’s perfect for surfing or kitesurfing. Staniel Cay is a great paddleboarding and kayaking spot, thanks to its protected, calm waters. And taking a Jet Ski jaunt around the islands is always fun.

Great Golfing

Test your land legs at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island, recognized as one of the top ten resort courses in North America and the Caribbean by Golf Digest. Or set sail to Emerald Bay to play a round at its Greg Norman-designed course.

Bahamas Bucket List

  • Swim with nurse sharks at Compass Cay
  • Make friends with the famous beach-dwelling pigs at Big Major Cay
  • Take a romantic stroll on Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island
  • Enjoy sunset cocktails or a beach picnic on a deserted stretch of sand
  • Share a drink with the A-listers and celebrities at Staniel Yacht Club
  • Play a round of golf at the Greg Norman-designed oceanfront golf course at Emerald Bay
  • Snorkel the Thunderball Grotto, the underground cave made famous in the James Bond movie Thunderball

Should You Charter a Yacht From Florida to The Bahamas?

The answer is YES & NO; depending on time, budget, and Bahamas destination. These variables change with each yacht charter. So the real question is: How do you maximize your time while getting the most out of your budget?

These breathtaking islands are only a short distance from Florida, making them the ideal cruising destination for your next vacation or holiday. We can help you to plan and execute your perfect yachting vacation , avoiding some common pitfalls that many of our charter clients have fallen victim to.

In this article, we will discuss the best way to get to popular Bahama destinations when planning a yacht charter Bahamas vacation to ensure your vacation is nothing but smooth sailing.

Bimini, Bahamas

charter yacht from florida to bahamas

Yacht Charters from Fort Lauderdale or Miami To Bimini, Does it Make Sense?

The short answer is yes, you should leave Florida to Bimini. It rarely makes sense to meet your yacht in Bimini.

Bimini is an excellent choice for a charter destination leaving from South Florida especially Miami, it’s only 50 nautical miles away and easy to get to with straight shot across the Gulf Stream. The best time to cross the Gulf Stream is in the summer months when the water is calmer. It’s also stunningly beautiful.

If you’re chartering a motor yacht, it is possible to go from Miami to Bimini in under 3 hours, making a day trip a possibility. However, a day trip can be very cost inefficient, especially considering most of your day will be cruising across the gulf stream and not enjoying the beautiful Bahamian waters.

Find out more about luxury Miami yacht rentals so you can get a head start on your trip! CharterLux has plenty of yachts to choose from and can help you throughout the entire process.

We recommend a 3-day charter to get the most out of your trip.

Note: We do not recommend day trips on holidays when customs can be backed up.

Yacht Charters Abaco & Exuma Bahamas

charter yacht from florida to bahamas

Yacht Charter from Fort Lauderdale or Miami To Nassau

The answer is no, you shouldn’t charter a yacht from South Florida to the Bahamas (except Bimini), but the answer isn’t short.

If you’re looking to charter a yacht in the Bahamas for 7-10 days you most likely would be visiting the islands of the Abacos and Exumas. Most charter yachts depart from the capital of the Bahamas (Nassau) mainly for the reasons below.

Things to Consider When Chartering a Yacht From Florida to Bahamas:

Financial considerations.

Sales Tax – Sales tax in the Bahamas is 4% versus 7% in South Florida [Palm Beach County (West Palm Beach), Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) and Dade County (Miami)].

Price of Fuel – Fuel prices are around half the price in Florida than in the Bahamas.

Amount of Fuel – The amount of fuel the yacht will consume to get to the Bahamas & back to Florida could supersede the repositioning fee it will cost you to relocate the yacht.

Time – Miami to Nassau is 160nm, which means it would take one full day to arrive in Nassau, costing you a significant amount of money in fuel and wasted time cruising to your destination. The amount of time (money) it will take cruising to the Bahamas and back to Florida will most likely supersede the repositioning fee charged by the yacht owner and can take two days out of your Bahamas yacht charter.

Cost Savings Example:

  • 100ft+ yacht that charters for $50,000 a week ($7,142 a day)
  • Cruises 16knts @ 120gph fuel burn
  • 10hrs (each way) x 2 = 20hrs
  • 20hrs x120gph = 2,400gal
  • 2,400gal x $3.50gal (est.) = $8,400
  • Lose two days of time traveling open ocean that could be spent in the Abacos or Exumas – $7,142 a day x 2 =$14,284
  • $5,000 Repo fee (est.)
  • $8,400 fuel + $14,284 in charter time – $5,000 repo fee = $17,684 in savings!

Legal Considerations

Liability – Most yachts will have to charter off of a Demise/Bareboat charter agreement if departing from U.S. waters. Departing from Bahamian waters you can charter off of a Time Charter Agreement, limiting your liability as a charterer.

Vessel Status – Foreign flagged vessels that have not paid their U.S. duties by law cannot charter from U.S. waters.

Accessibility

Mother Nature– Weather can affect the amount of time it takes cruising to your destination. It’s never fun to sail through rough weather. Once you are in the Bahamas your captain should be able to alter your itinerary to best avoid rough seas.

International Airport– Nassau has an international airport which has direct flights from Fort Lauderdale and many more cites.

On larger motor yachts and superyachts, expect to find amenities such as a cinema, swimming pool, hot tub, a spa, gym, beach club, and multiple deck areas for sunbathing, relaxation, and entertaining. Superyachts may also include a helipad and submersibles. The wide range of amenities and voluminous interior spaces of a motor yacht make them a popular choice with families and large groups of friends. Sailing yachts offer a thrilling way to explore The Bahamas and are a great choice for those seeking an eco-friendly way to cruise. Hoist up the sails and harness the power of Mother Nature; nothing matches the thrill of sailing and the deeper connection that it fosters with the ocean and the environment. Modern luxury sailing yachts boast clever and flexible layouts and fantastic onboard amenities coupled with stunning interiors. Of course, on a crewed sailing yacht charter, you will also benefit from incredible service levels courtesy of a dedicated and highly professional, and knowledgeable crew. BAHAMAS YACHT CHARTERS TO BIMINI ISLANDS AND POINTS OF INTEREST

Bimini is the nearest Bahamian island (two islands) to the USA, barely 50 miles from Miami, it’s a very short trip and only a few hours by yacht from Miami. A tiny island of the Bahamas, Bimini is just 7 miles long and barely 700 feet wide at its widest point. Bimini is the western most island in the Bahamas and the closest foreign island to the US mainland and has previously been recognized mainly for the famous Hemingway era.

Whether you come with the family, as a couple, or single for bar hopping, casinos, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, tanning on the beaches, or relaxing in a hammock in the cool breeze, the Bahamas will leave you speechless and satisfied. A US Passport or birth certificate is required when traveling to the Bahamas.

BAHAMAS YACHT CHARTERS TO NASSAU, HARBOUR CAY, BERRY ISLANDS

The more ‘popular’ areas of the Bahamas begins in the Berry Islands, while on your way to Nassau, which are low-lying and unique with few inhabitants, fantastic fishing and the feeling of being on a different planet. Many groups make Chub Cay their first stop, then go north…or start in Great Stirrup Cay and go Southwards. Either way, even on a power-yacht, it will take a week or longer to when traveling by yacht. If leaving from Miami, charterers will cross the Gulf Stream with its seasonal uncertainties, with slight chances of the charter being delayed a day or so, if the seas are too rough, but this is not normally the case and the journey is well worth it!! Most our charter guests prefer to fly into Nassau, and board their sailing or motor yacht at the Atlantis Hotel and Marina, beginning their cruise in Bahamas, avoiding the seven-hour delivery across the Atlantic Ocean. Other charterers, especially the bare-boaters, like to fly into Marsh Harbour in the Abacos and rent a charter boat from there and explore the Sea of Abaco.

The Atlantis Hotel Casino and Resort is the largest and most amazing resort in all of Bahamas, offering 5-Star amenities for all ages including a theme waterpark, the Caribbean’s largest aquarium, interactive dolphin lagoon, world-class casino and spa, couture brand shopping center, and over a dozen fine dining restaurants. Many charters begin and end their charter at the Atlantis Marina, which provides just enough excitement and action for a couple of days, while other days are spent exploring the more remote islands.

BAHAMAS YACHT CHARTERS TO EXUMAS AND ABACOS

The Exumas chain of 365 islands (or cays) in the Bahamas, starts about 35 nm South of Nassau and runs about 120 nm South from Allen Cay, all the way to Georgetown that has an airport with regular scheduled flights. This is considered the most sought after location in the Bahamas with crystal-clear waters, swimming pigs, superb diving, friendly petting sharks, snorkeling, fishing and lots of neat little bays and coves to anchor out. Exumas is a special strip of private islands where one can find a lone Tiki beach bar in the middle of seemingly nowhere…in paradise! Be sure to visit Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, which some consider the most breathtaking place is the Exumas. http://www.exumapark.org. There are some great itineraries that start and end either in Nassau or Staniel Cay and cover the upper Exumas, Cat Island, Eleuthera, and Harbour island.

For the even more adventurous, a Georgetown pick-up and a route that includes the “Out-Islands” of the Bahamas is even more attractive for those of us who like remote and mostly uninhabited islands. The few locals you encounter are very friendly and polite. This route includes the islands of Rum Cay, Conception, San Salvador, Long Island, Acklins, Crooked Islands, and Mayaguana. The island of Great Inagua has a fine National Park and nature reserve with the largest population of West Indian Flamingoes, Parrots, and other bird species. Little Inagua has a large population of feral donkeys and goats that were originally left there (or escaped from) the numerous wrecks caused by the Inagua reef.

In the Northern Bahamas, the Sea of Abaco, with its three “major towns” of Marsh Harbour, Hopetown and Coopers Town and ringed by Green Turtle Cay, Treasure Cay and many others, constitutes a small isolated area with its own special culture and values. The Abacos are especially known for calm waters, warm breezes and panoramic beauty that make this 120-mile–long chain of islands a boating and sailing paradise. It’s not just the sea that attracts travelers from around the world. Those who prefer to explore by land will find championship golf courses on Treasure Cay, charming colonial towns on Green Turtle and Elbow Cays, and countless hotels, restaurants and bars throughout.

In summary, the Bahamas is not just Bimini and the casinos of Freeport, Lucaya, Nassau and Paradise Island. The real Bahamas can be seen only by a private charter boat and remains one of the most unbelievable recreational cruising grounds in the world.

Please contact us to arrange a Bahamas charter vacation, customized just for you and your group.

How Long Does It Take to Get from Miami to the Bahamas by Catamaran or Sailboat?

Catamarans and sailboats offer a more leisurely pace, taking approximately 6 to 10 hours to reach Nassau . The relaxed journey allows passengers to savor the beauty of the open seas and enjoy the gentle rocking of the boat.

Chartering a catamaran or a sailboat for your private vacation from Miami to The Bahamas offers a unique sailing experience, connection with nature and a more relaxed pace.

Relying on wind propulsion, catamarans and sailboats typically have lower operational costs, reducing the need for fuel to motor yachts and this can make the overall trip more effective. On the other hand, the trip could take more time.

Our recommendation is to charter the catamaran or sailboat for a minimum of 5 to 7 days, evaluating a one-way trip.

Costs and prices, how much does it cost to charter a yacht from florida to the bahamas.

How to Calculate The Fuel Cost of a Motor Boat vacation to the Bahamas from Florida?

Calculating the fuel cost for a powerboat journey from Miami to various islands in the Bahamas involves considering factors such as the distance, fuel consumption rate (in gallons per hour), and the cost of fuel per gallon.

Here’s a general formula for estimating fuel costs:

Fuel Cost = ( Distance/Miles per Gallon) × Cost per Gallon of Fuel

Assumptions:

  • The fuel consumption rate is in miles per gallon (MPG).
  • The distance is in miles.
  • The cost of fuel is per gallon.

Let’s use average values for illustration purposes:

  • Distance: 50 miles (approx.)
  • Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.5 MPG (assumed)
  • Cost per Gallon of Fuel: $4.00 (assumed)

Fuel Cost = (50/1.5) × 4.00

  • Distance: 185 miles (approx.)
  • Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.2 MPG (assumed)

Fuel Cost = (185/1.2) × 4.00

  • Distance: 100 miles (approx.)
  • Fuel Consumption Rate: 1.4 MPG (assumed)

Fuel Cost = (100/1.4) × 4.00

These calculations provide estimated fuel costs for one leg of the journey.

For a more accurate estimate, it’s crucial to consider the specific fuel consumption rate of the powerboat being used. Additionally, fuel prices may vary, so the assumed cost per gallon is a generalization.

Keep in mind that fuel costs are just one aspect of the overall expenses involved in a boat trip. Other factors, such as maintenance, docking fees, and provisions, should also be considered when planning the budget for a Miami to Bahamas powerboat journey.

Sailing to the Bahamas

charter yacht from florida to bahamas

Exotic waters and the cooling trade winds have earned The Bahamas an international reputation for sailing, with regattas and races held year-round. The islands are actually the birthplace of the Gulf Stream, a phenomenon that also accounts for their astonishing variety and abundance of marine life. Legendary game fish draw sport fisherman in search of the "big one," and more than 50 international fishing records have been set in these waters. The great writer and fisherman Ernest Hemingway considered the Bahamian island of Bimini a home. The same conditions that make these islands so appealing to sailors and fisherman draw visitors to the vast and diverse underwater parks. With more than 5% of the planet's reef mass, the Bahamas offer inexhaustible pleasures and challenges to snorkelers and divers. The natural beauty of the water extends to the thousands of miles of shoreline, which has some of the world's most stunningly beautiful and unsullied beaches. From the pink sands of Harbour Island and Eleuthera to the deserted strands of the Exumas and San Salvador, there is a lifetime of beaches to experience. Further inland are gardens and National Parks with rare and endangered species, such as the exotic Abaco Parrot and the Bahamian Iguana. Although The Bahamas are as diverse and numerous as the days of the year, the reassuring unifier is the charm and hospitality of its people.

Escape to the bahamas: tradewind aviation launches new routes.

The semi-private jet company is flying on-demand throughout the Bahamas now, with scheduled service from Palm Beach, Florida to North Eleuthera and Marsh Harbour starting this winter.

Tradewind Aviation has opened a new Southeast hub in Palm Beach, Florida.

Here he is, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Razor Thin Margins !

My nickname seems apt for David Zipkin at this moment, as he teeters along the edge of a multi-million dollar Bahamian bluff in Eleuthera. It strikes us as funny, because in private aviation, it’s often true. Or at least it used to be in 2001, when pilots David and his brother Eric Zipkin co-founded Tradewind Aviation with just one plane, an eight-seat Cessna Caravan turboprop.

Today, Tradewind is considered one of the top semi-private airlines with a 32-plane fleet of mostly Swiss-made Pilatus PC-12s. Their stock-in-trade is operating private charters as well as scheduled service around the northeast, the Caribbean and St. Barts, with its notoriously short runways. When I first met the Zipkin brothers two years ago, their fleet count was only 23. They say the trick to growth is keeping these planes in the air: “There's nothing more expensive than an airplane sitting on the ground.”

So they opened a new Southeast hub in Florida last September, officially entering a major market. Tradewind’s private clients can now fly pretty much anywhere within 350 nautical miles from Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), which includes all of the Bahamas, an archipelago made up of 700 islands. (There’s a lot more to this place than Nassau).

Eleuthera specifically, the 110-mile island with ferry service to nearby Harbour Island, is of obvious interest to Tradewind because it’s a known hideaway for celebrities and a real estate enclave for billionaires-with-a-B. Lenny Kravitz has a home here. Need I say more?

iOS 17.5—Apple Issues Update Now Warning To All iPhone Users

Biden vs trump 2024 election polls trump leads biden by 1 point latest survey shows, ios 17 5 iphone update now live with important new features.

“We've always known that the South Florida-Bahamas market is very strong and perfect for what we do. I would have loved to be in this market 10 years ago, but we didn't have the infrastructure to support it. Now that we do it's an exciting time because we can commit to new markets,” Zipkin told Forbes. It’s also an exciting time for travelers, who can take advantage of this fly private-for-less charter model, which operates short distance flights on 8-seat planes. The appeal, apart from mod leather seats, complimentary champagne and fresh-faced pilots, is that they’re small enough to land on remote islands, where you might not otherwise find good, or any, service.

Though Tradewind’s new schedule of charters to North Eleuthera and Marsh Harbour from Palm Beach has not yet been published, pricing will start “in the range of $350 per person one-way,” according to the company. (For updated timing and pricing, check Tradewind’s website ). Here’s a first look at the experience:

Eleuthera is a long, thin island in the Bahamas archipelago.

Explore Eleuthera in 10 Stunning Images

Named after the Greek word ‘eleutheros,’ meaning freedom, Eleuthera is also called ‘Freedom Island.’ Freedom from tourists is one observation. There are no mega Margaritavilles or Sandals resorts in sight. What you will find on this quiet, laid-back island are untouched beaches, pink sands, coral reefs and other natural wonders. And if you want to shake things up, Harbour Island with its high-end hotels and membership clubs is just a 10-minute ferry ride away.

The Charter Flight

Tradewind co-founder and chief commercial officer David Zipkin

I joined Tradewind co-founder and chief commercial officer David Zipkin for a sneak peek at the new route, meeting him at the Palm Beach FBO (fixed-base operator) ahead of our flight. We were greeted by two young pilots who carried our luggage and led us from a private lounge directly to the tarmac, which is standard operating procedure for Tradewind’s private charters.

Aerial Arrival

Flying into North Eleuthera, Bahamas

The turquoise waters of Eleuthera are a breathtaking sight from above. Arriving in such style has been a luxury reserved only for the ultra-wealthy. Until now.

Glass Window Bridge

The Glass Window Bridge

One of Eleuthera’s attractions is the Glass Window Bridge, a man-made strip of land that divides the phenomenal contrast of raucous, royal blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean and the calm, turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Taking in both vistas is a surreal sight, to say the least.

Queen’s Bath

The Queen's Bath is a natural attraction for visitors to the island of Eleuthera

The Queen’s Bath, located 0.6 miles south of the Glass Window Bridge, is indeed an ideal spot to bathe like a queen in the warm waters of the Atlantic. These natural tide pools have been carved by centuries of waves pounding exposed rock, creating a dramatic backdrop for your afternoon soak.

The Cove’s Villa

Inside the 3-bedroom villa at the Cove Eleuthera.

The Cove Eleuthera is a stylish, 29-room resort situated on 40 acres overlooking two private beaches. There are a range of suites, villas and cottages on property, but this 3-bedroom villa fashioned in bamboo and teak wood is a showstopper designed by Bar Architects , with a full kitchen, private plunge pool, and outdoor shower — all with the option of a private butler, private chef, and babysitting services. It’s the kind of place you might book for a special occasion or wedding, if the in-laws are feeling generous. (Prices range from $3,500 a night in the low season to $10,000 in the high season, from November to May.)

The Cove’s Infinity Pool

The infinity pool at The Cove Eleuthera

Following owner Oscar Tang’s $70 million renovation, which is still ongoing, the Cove unveiled this heated infinity pool overlooking both beaches. Amenities here include a state-of-the-art fitness center, yoga studio, an open-air cocktail bar built to face the sunset, and an elegant seafood restaurant. According to Managing Director Carlton Russell, the property will add two pickleball courts by November to keep up with demand, along with a new boardroom for corporate off-site retreats.

Harbour Island

Harbour Island in The Bahamas

Harbour Island has a very ‘lifestyles of the rich and famous’ charm, with plenty of luxurious hotels and secluded beaches. The island doesn’t allow cars, so go with the Bahamian flow, hop on a bicycle or golf cart, and let your hair blow in the breeze.

Dunmore Hotel & Beach Club

Beachside dining at the Dunmore Hotel

At the center of the action on Harbour Island is The Dunmore , which possesses a retro 1960s resort glam and is framed by pink sands, breezy patios, and vintage rattan. With the sensibility of an exclusive private members club, it's no wonder celebs feel safe to socialize.

Pink Sands Beach

Pink Sands Beach, Harbour Island

The Dunmore is situated smack in the middle section of Pink Sands beach. It is a three-mile stretch of finely crushed coral that’s been sifted and smoothed overtime, and looks lovely in any light.

The Sunset Cruise

A sunset boat cruise in Eleuthera

The art of the evening sunset boat cruise requires a bit of planning. Pictured here is the Cove’s wine and cheese pairing. It’s an excellent idea, in theory. My advice? Hold your goblet close and bring an extra towel, just in case waters get choppy.

'I ended up in a shark den': Deck hand bitten in fall from boat needed 100-plus stitches

Marlin wakeman fell into a shiver of 20 sharks while working on a fishing charter in the bahamas. how he got out of the water stunned his surgeon..

charter yacht from florida to bahamas

WEST PALM BEACH — On Marlin Wakeman’s many trips to the Bahamas as a deckhand on charter fishing boats, he would notice dozens of sharks gathered by docks, where people throw buckets of fish at them.

He often would wonder: What would happen if anyone fell in?

On Friday, April 26, he found out the most painful way a person could.

Wakeman's foot slipped as he jumped from the dock to a boat at Flying Fish Marina in Clarence Town and he fell into a shiver of 20 hungry sharks. When he hit the water, a 7-foot Caribbean reef shark sunk its teeth into his left leg and pulled Wakeman's head underwater.

“I ended up in a shark den,” Wakeman, 24, of Stuart said Thursday, May 9, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. “I wasn’t really scared at the moment. I just knew I had to get out as quickly as possible. Thankfully, I’m here to tell the story.”

Wakeman had just managed to pull himself onto the boat’s deck, when a second shark grazed his right shoulder with its teeth.

'The luckiest guy': Shark bite victim recounts his 'shredded' arm, stranger who saved him

Path of shark-bite survival went from tourniquet to wheelbarrow to clinic

The boat’s captain heard Wakeman’s cries for help from inside the boat. When he saw him, he tied a tourniquet on his leg, pushed him to a van in a wheelbarrow and sent him to the nearest clinic. There, the medical staff stopped the bleeding and stitched up the wounds.

“Nothing really hurt at first,” said Wakeman, who was working on a charter for Bucket List, a company based in Stuart. “It was a lot of pressure, but I didn't feel any sharpness. You don't really feel the teeth going into you.”

Wakeman said the pain was the worst on the van ride to the clinic, when the adrenaline wore off. He passed out from the pain.

“I wasn’t freaking out, but I told my captain, ‘Hey man, I don’t really want to die right now,’ ” Wakeman said with a chuckle.

The boat’s owner chartered a plane to fly him to West Palm Beach the next day. His dad, Rufus, met him at the airport and took him to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

When the elder Wakeman saw the text about his son’s shark attack , he said it felt like time stood still. His wife, Melynda, said she went into “shock mode” and “felt like a million little pieces.”

“It’s the worst text you can get,” said Rufus Wakeman, a charter captain himself. “I have several friends who have been bitten, and it’s a shocking revelation when you see some of the wounds these people have had to endure. Now it's our son.”

He is glad that the surgeon who cared for his son, Dr. Robert Borrego, specializes in treating shark attacks. He has treated three so far this year and typically has seven shark bite patients a year, he said.

“Due to a particular chain of events that were set in motion that day, (Marlin) is sitting here right now,” Rufus Wakeman said. “We’re very grateful for all the powers that be that got us to this point.”

'Blessed that it wasn't worse': Florida surfer recounts shark bite that cost him tip of toe

West Palm Beach surgeon 'shocked' that shark attack survivor escaped the water

Borrego said the shark just missed Marlin’s femoral artery, which carries blood from the lower abdomen to the lower limbs. If it had bitten him there, he would have lost more blood and possibly his life.

“It shocks me that he was able to get out of that water,” Borrego said. “The fact that there were 20 sharks in there and he was able to get out and still have a leg is amazing.”

Stopping the bleeding is the first course of action after a shark bite, because bleeding out is the greatest threat to life. After a patient is stabilized, infection becomes the top concern. A lab at St. Mary’s studies the effects that contact with a shark’s mouth can have on the human body. It has found a greater amount of bacteria the closer sharks are to shore.

As soon as Wakeman got to the hospital, Borrego prescribed him a “broad spectrum” of antibiotics. He then performed surgery to clean out the wounds and check for infection.

Borrego expects Wakeman to make a full recovery. He took out his stitches this past week and said the 24-year-old is “healing nicely.” He expects the scars to heal in two weeks, but recommends that Wakeman keep his leg out of the sun for a year.

'Happy to be OK': Shark-bite victim recounts incident near Juno Beach Pier, surgery on arm

Shark bite survivor reminds people not to get 'lazy' near apex predators

Wakeman said he will be more careful working near the water from now on. He said he “got a little lazy” after bringing fishing gear back and forth from the the dock to the boat, which makes regular fishing charter trips from Stuart to the Bahamas.

He jumped 3 feet, rather than cautiously stepping toward the boat. That's when he fell.

Wakeman had narrowly escaped a few close encounters with sharks on other fishing and diving trips. He considers the incident “lucky” because it was him who fell, rather than a child or an elderly person who wouldn't have had the strength to pull themselves onto the boat.

“Keep in mind that (sharks) are apex predators and you don’t want to end up in their mouth,” Wakeman said.

Florida leads the world in shark bites. Awareness is the best way to avoid them.

The best way to stay away from a shark attack in the ocean is to avoid swimming in murky water and being aware of the blacktip shark migration period, which roughly runs from January to April.

Florida leads the world in shark bites, according to a report by the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File. The report logged 83 shark attacks in Palm Beach County since 1882 and found that 15% of bites in Florida are from blacktip sharks.

Palm Beach County has the third-most shark attacks since 1882 out of all other Florida counties. The greatest concentrations are in Volusia County, home to Daytona Beach, which some call the “shark bite capital of the world.”
