Sailing the Virgin Islands: Airbnb & VRBO Catamaran Charters

Virgin Islands Sailing Charters - USVI Sailing

The idea of sailing in the Virgin Islands might conjure up images of celebrities and private yachts.  But it’s one of the Caribbean’s best secrets that you can sail the Virgin Islands on a catamaran or sailboat from Airbnb and VRBO.  Plus, sailing is the best way to explore the white sand beaches, gorgeous scenery, and snorkeling that make the Virgin Islands famous.  Get advice for choosing a sailing charter, plus hacks for day trippers and solo travelers!

After I did a liveaboard snorkeling trip while traveling solo in Thailand, my family decided they wanted in on the adventure.  But as we considered closer options in the Caribbean, we realized that most were large boats with mixed snorkeling and scuba diving groups.  Soon, though, I hit upon a solution: for about the same per-person cost, we could charter a private catamaran to sail the Virgin Islands.

Experienced sailors can hire a “bare boat” charter, where your group skippers, navigates, and cooks for themselves.  But luckily for those of us that don’t know our leeward from our aft, it’s also possible to charter a boat with a captain and crew.  In this guide I’ll share the easiest way to charter a boat and what to expect, the best sights of the US and British Virgin Islands, and all the tips you need to plan an amazing vacation.

Don’t miss my tips on the best Airbnbs in St. Thomas and Airbnb St. John stays to extend your trip!

Things to Do in the Virgin Islands

Virgin Islands Sailing Overview & Planning

What to expect sailing in the virgin islands.

How does a totally effortless vacation sound, with your only decisions being when to eat, snorkel, lounge, and drink tropical cocktails?  What about falling asleep to the gentle motions of the boat and sound of waves, then waking up with views of blue sky and turquoise waters from the portals?

If you choose a Virgin Islands charter with a captain and crew, you can completely relax! It’s common for couples to crew boats together and take care of everything.  If you choose a boat with just a captain, you’ll likely pick up some sailing skills helping out.  And members of your group can pitch in to take turns preparing meals and cleaning up.

For those who haven’t spent much time on a boat, the living space might be smaller than you expect. But you’ll have the ocean and beaches for your playground every day, and can arrange the itinerary to go ashore for dinners at low-key beach restaurants.  In short, pack bathing suits, sunscreen, cover-ups, and casual dresses, and leave the heels at home!  (More packing tips later!)

Airbnb St. Thomas Virgin Islands: Budget to Luxury Beach Escapes

Advice on the best Airbnb St. Thomas stays for a tropical escape, from budget condos to mid range resorts & luxury villas for a group. Includes bonus tips on the best beaches, sights, and tours for planning your getaway.

About the Virgin Islands

Did you know there are actually three different groups of Virgin Islands?  Well, I didn’t, until I took this trip!  The British Virgin Islands are the most popular and well-known.  Made up of over 50 islands, the BVI are some of the least-developed spots in the Caribbean, but their largest islands are renowned as luxury destinations.  The beautiful beaches and party bars of Jost Van Dyke are here, as are the picturesque grottoes of the Virgin Gorda Baths.

Just 20 miles away lie the US Virgin Islands, known as “America’s paradise.”  Its three islands – St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix – each has a different attraction for travelers.  St. Thomas is famed as a luxury getaway, while the island of St. John is ⅔ undeveloped. Still, there are tons of things to do in St. John , including a national park perfect for snorkeling and hiking.  Further south, St. Croix offers colonial history and tours of the Cruzan Rum distillery in addition to spectacular snorkeling.

The Spanish Virgin Islands are actually part of Puerto Rico, so the name is a holdover from when the island belonged to Spain.  In the SVI, you’ll find the unspoiled beaches of Culebra and a bioluminescent bay in Vieques.  Many travelers here say that these islands remind them of the quieter BVI of years past.

US residents can travel in the USVI and SVI without a passport, but will need one to enter the BVI.

Booking a Virgin Islands Sailing Charter

In both the BVI and USVI, there are companies that exclusively provide sailing charter rentals.  If you want a bare boat charter, one of these companies is likely the best option, as they can advise on all the options and considerations for your trip.

However, for a crewed boat, I found that the easiest way to arrange a Virgin Islands charter was to use a site like VRBO or Airbnb.   Both offer online reviews, and their bookings follow the same policies as regular vacation rentals on those sites.  You can also message with the host before you book to ask any questions.

I’ll share more recommended options later in this guide. I always recommend always booking through a reputable company, so that you have assistance should you need it.

How Long Should You Stay in the Virgin Islands?

Depending on the length of your trip and options from your captain, you might be able to see all of the Virgin Islands.  On our one-week Virgin Islands itinerary, we didn’t have time for the Spanish Islands, but easily saw all of the best sights of the BVI and USVI.

Because you spend most of your time on the boat, in the water, or on a beach, you’ll get a lot of sun on this trip!  One week was enough for me, with my fair skin and tendency to turn into a lobster.  If you plan to stretch your trip to 10 or 14 days, just keep this in mind when you plan your itinerary and pack.  You’ll have more time to spend ashore at stops than we did, which will help.

Be sure to read my snorkeling packing list for tips on reef-safe sunscreen, dry bags, UPF clothing and more gear for your trip.

The Best Time to Visit the U.S. and British Virgin Islands

High season in the Virgin Islands is December through April, when most of us are looking for an escape from cold winter weather!  Hurricane season begins in June and lasts until November.  Luckily, sunshine is plentiful year round, with daytime temperatures in the high 80’s and nighttime temps in the 70’s.

If you can travel in May – June or November – early December, the shoulder seasons, you’re likely to find more availability and cheaper rates.

We traveled at the end of April and the weather was nearly perfect, except for a storm that caused my mom’s flight to be re-routed through Puerto Rico.  Luckily she made it onto a small puddle jumper (complete with bawking chicken sounds coming from the hold!) and met up with us just a few hours late.  The weather for the rest of the trip was picture-perfect.

Check weather averages for your dates from Holiday-Weather.com .

Choosing a Boat: Monohull (Sailboat or Sailing Yacht) or Catamaran

When choosing a boat, you’ll have considerations such as the number of people in your group, the layout of the boat, and your own personal preferences.  Some might want the adventure and experience of a “real” sailboat, while others would prefer a steadier trip with more space and luxuries aboard a double-hulled catamaran.

While I love the romance and classic adventure of a sailboat, I ultimately prefer a catamaran for a multi-day trip.  They offer more room, usually with a living room between the two hulls.  Double hulls also make catamarans more stable, lessening seasickness and making it easier to walk on the deck.  There’s also netting between the hulls at the front of the boat, which creates an amazing place to relax over the water and watch sunsets!

More luxurious boats have ensuite bathrooms for each cabin; in general, the boats accommodate 2-8 guests.  Be sure to check the layouts of your choices before you book.

Sandy Cay - Virgin Islands Sailing

What’s Included in A Virgin Islands Sailing Charter?

The short answer: it depends.  Each charter listing will include all the details, and you can also clarify additional points before you book. Some rates include all costs, which makes it easier to evaluate; these usually have a set base price which increases depending on the number of travelers.  There might be watersports equipment included like snorkels, water noodles, and paddleboards, which helps you pack less.

It’s common that “provisions” aren’t included: these are all the food, drinks, and groceries you’ll need.  Provisioning can be arranged through your booking company or captain, or you can shop for it yourself.  We chose to pay our captain to provision his boat, but stopped at a local shop to pick up some extra rum and preferred liquors!

Additionally, there could be other extras such as fuel, water, national park permit, etc.  Be sure to check the details of each listing and clarify any points so you can compare your options.

USVI and BVI Sailing Charter Easy Bookings

These options below all have good reviews as well as availability calendars and online bookings.  Note that if they begin in the BVI, it’s still possible to visit the USVI, and vice versa depending on what you agree on with the captain or host.  The USVI and BVI are only about 20 miles apart – but keep in mind that you will need to bring a passport to travel between the two countries!

Airbnb Sailing Charters

Check out these sailing charters for the US and British Virgin Islands from Airbnb. If you prefer to search for your own options on Airbnb, specify a boat under the “unique stays” option. But keep an eye out for bookings that are only lodging: some boats remain at the dock or don’t include sailing.

VRBO Charters

VRBO is another top vacation rental site, and has many options to book sailing charters in the BVI and USVI . Check some of their best-rated charters including the one my family and I booked, the Guiding Light.

Best Sights for Virgin Islands Sailing

Wondering what the top sights are in the BVI and USVI?  Check out these ideas for your Virgin Islands sailing itinerary.

BVI Top Sights | Sights for Sailing in the British Virgin Islands

The baths on virgin gorda island.

The huge, smooth grey boulders and clear turquoise waters of The Baths are one of the most-recognizable sights of the BVI.  This national park is a must-see spot for Virgin Islands sailing.  Swim in from the bay to snorkel and explore the grotto and calm pools. You can hike from the top of The Baths to the picturesque Devil’s Bay, at Virgin Gorda’s southwestern end.

Jost Van Dyke

The smallest of the four main islands of the BVI, Jost van Dyke is rumored to have been named for a Dutch pirate that used the island’s harbours as a hideout.  The island is accessible by ferry service and private boats, as well as cruises that dock and shuttle passengers ashore.  White Bay is a gorgeous white sand beach with many bars like the Soggy Dollar, home of the famous Painkiller cocktail.  On the east side of the island, visit the Bubbly Pool, a natural jacuzzi formed by waves rushing over the rocky shore.  At the Great Harbor, have dinner and drinks at Corsairs restaurant and popular Foxy’s bar.  Nearby, hike and snorkel at Sandy Cay, a tropical deserted island surrounded by a barrier reef.

Soper’s Hole, West End, Tortola BVI

Soper’s Hole in Tortola’s West End is one of the places where you can clear customs and immigration from the USVI to the BVI.  It has a colorful marina with restaurants and shops which are a good spot for souvenirs.  If you need provisions, stop in at Harbour Market.  Be sure to check out Pusser’s Landing, a bar and restaurant which also claims to be the birthplace of the Painkiller! You should definitely try both to see if you prefer theirs or the Soggy Dollar’s. 😉

Cane Garden Bay, Tortola

Cane Garden bay is the most popular beach on Tortola, with calm turquoise waters and a beautiful crescent beach.  Swimming, windsurfing and other water sports are popular here, as well as the lively bars and restaurants that line the beach.  Tour the nearby Callwood Rum Distillery, where they’re producing rum the same way they did 200 years ago.

Norman Island & The Indians

Norman Island is a BVI gem rumored to have inspired the Robert Louis Stevenson classic “Treasure Island.” Snorkel right into the high cliff face at the island’s famous caves which are full of marine life.   Nearby, you can also snorkel on the Indians, a dramatic series of rocks as you approach Norman Island.  The water on one side of the Indians is deep, but the reef is full of colorful coral, sea fans, and marine life.  The Indians are a must-see spot for BVI sailing.  At Norman Island’s protected anchorage area known as “the Bight,” visit local bars and restaurants including the floating bar Willy T’s and Pirates Bight restaurant.

The RMS Rhone is a shipwreck that sank in 1867 during a category 3 hurricane.  Now, the wreck site and surrounding waters are the Rhone National Marine Marine Park.  This is an amazing site for scuba diving, but it’s possible to snorkel as well since the water is very clear.  Much of the vessel is still intact.

Top USVI Sights | Sights for Sailing in the US Virgin Islands

Virgin islands national park, st. john.

Virgin Islands National Park occupies ⅔ of the island of St. John. Many of the beaches are fringed by coral reefs. They include Trunk Bay, with an underwater snorkeling trail including guide signs with information on the coral and sealife.  The beach here has been voted one of the most beautiful in the world!  Annaberg Plantation has the ruins of an 18th-century sugar plantation, which visitors can tour to learn more about the plantation’s role in the African slave trade as well as how it produced sugar, molasses, and rum. Trails through tropical forests lead to the ruins of Reef Bay Sugar Mill, in the south.

Cinnamon Bay Beach, St. John

Cinnamon Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches within the National Park. It’s the longest beach on St. John, with a half mile of white sand plus palm trees and sea grapes for shade.  Snorkelers can explore the small cay located less than 100 yards off the shoreline. This beach is still recovering from Hurricane Irma, and doesn’t have any restaurants.

Buck Island, off St. Croix

Off the coast of St. Croix lies uninhabited Buck Island, 175 acres of protected land surrounded by 19,000 acres of the Buck Island Reef National Monument. The barrier reef is a nesting area for three species of sea turtles, and also has an underwater trail through coral and sea fans.

Caribbean Gem: Buck Island Reef National Monument (Short Film, 2014)

Leinster Bay & Waterlemon Cay, St. John

Waterlemon Cay is tiny island in Leinster Bay, and a top snorkeling spot on St. John with many species of coral, fish, and marine life.  A strong current sometimes runs on the north side of the cay, so use caution snorkeling there.  On the south side, find longspine sea urchins, many fish, and hard and soft corals.  This was another of my favorite snorkeling spots on our trip!

aerial view of a small island in Leinster Bay

Salt Pond Bay, St. John

Salt Pond Bay has a beautiful crescent shaped beach with calm, clear waters.  This is a more secluded beach, as it’s further from tourist spots, and also a quarter mile hike from its parking lot.  Salt Pond Bay is one of the top snorkeling locations on St. John, and has access to hiking trails that provide views of the island.

Salt Pond Bay hike - St. John USVI

Maho Bay, St. John

Maho Bay is a popular spot to see sea turtles. The seagrass beds in the middle of the shallow bay provide a habitat for the green sea turtles.  There are also reefs at the eastern and western ends of the shore with hard and soft corals and many tropical fish species.

Maho Bay St. John USVI

Sandy Point, St. Croix

Sandy Point is a pristine beach on the southwestern tip of St. Croix that is also a national wildlife refuge.  If it looks familiar, it was featured in the movie “The Shawshank Redemption.”   The 400-acre reserve is a habitat for leatherback sea turtles.  Since it’s a wildlife reserve, there are no beach bars or services here – just uninhabited beaches.

Sandy Point - US Virgin Islands St. Croix

Magens Bay, St. Thomas

Beautiful Magens Bay is one of the most popular beaches in the USVI, with a mile-long stretch of sand with calm clear waters.  It’s known as a spot for snorkeling with sea turtles as well as paddleboarding and other water sports.  Relax at the beach bar and restaurant  for a drink and a snack.

Getting to the Virgin Islands for a Sailing Charter

Us virgin islands airports, ferries and taxis.

There are two major airports in the Virgin Islands: Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas (STT) and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix (STX).  Most charters start from St. Thomas.

Check flights to St. Thomas STT | Check flights to St. Croix STX

There is a ferry that runs from St. Thomas and St. John between Red Hook and Cruz Bay .

At the airport, exit to find a taxi stand outside.  Taxis are priced per person based on your destination.  Many run like a shuttle, in a large van with other travelers.  Get an idea of rates and destinations here .

If you’d like to pre-book a private transfer, here are some options with online bookings and good reviews:

British Virgin Islands Airports & Transportation

There are two ways to get to the British Virgin Islands. The first is to fly directly to Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Tortola (EIS), formerly Beef Island Airport. The second way is to fly to Cyril E. King airport in St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands (STT) and then take a ferry to Tortola, BVI.  Most charters in the BVI depart from Tortola.

What to Pack for Your Virgin Islands Sailing Charter Vacation

As I mentioned before, a sailing vacation is very casual!  I recommend packing at least 2 bathing suits as well as a rashguard shirt with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) to protect you from the sun.  If you’re an avid snorkeler, you might even want UPF capris so that your backside doesn’t get burnt (true story) . A dry-bag is a must-have for trips ashore.

Also, there won’t be much room onboard, so be sure to bring a soft-sided bag rather than a regular suitcase.  Get my full packing list for snorkeling trips and liveaboard adventures and check out my list of favorite gear .

More Recommended Gear for Your Trip

Safety note: uscg approved life jackets for kids.

Your charter will surely provide life jackets for all passengers, but it’s especially important for children to have a life jacket (or personal flotation device – PFD) that is meant for their age, size and weight and approved by the US Coast Guard (USGC).  USGC ratings specify that jackets for infants and small children should have a padded head support, grab handle, and crotch strap to keep it from riding up (and the child from slipping out).

Get more info here and tips from REI including getting kids used to jackets ahead of time at home.  Note: water wings, float suits, and similar items are meant for supervised play.  US law requires that children under 13 years of age must wear their lifejacket, unless below deck.

Day 2: Norman Island, Peter Island & Cooper Island

virgin island catamaran vacations

Begin the day with a short sail to “The Indians”, a collection of rocks that resemble an Indian Headdress, for superb scenery and some amazing snorkelling or diving. Sailing on to Peter Island, you will discover Deadman’s Bay, an ideal spot for a picnic on the long white sandy beaches. For active groups, get out the paddle boards and keep an eye out for the sea turtles that you’re sharing the azure waters with! After a day in the water, sail over to Haulover at Cooper Island to see a spectacular coastline, easily explored by kayak. A note about the extraordinary cuisine on a Crewed BVI Yacht charter

virgin island catamaran vacations

One of the most superb and memorable parts of your crewed catamaran charter often has nothing to do with snorkelling or sunsets, it's the unbelievable food that your dedicated chef prepares along the way. All of the crewed yachts that Boatbookings recommends have excellent chefs aboard who provide up to 3 glorious meals a day that are specifically designed around your preferences and dietary requirements. You are guaranteed a culinary adventure as exciting as this BVI itinerary!

You don't need to cook, clean, or even refill your wine glass - your crew will take care of your every wish. All you need to do is kick back, relax and enjoy!

Day 3: The Wreck of the Rhone, The Baths and Virgin Gorda

The Baths,Virgin Gorda - BVI Itinerary

After an exotic Caribbean breakfast, backtrack to the far end of Salt Island to the Wreck of the Rhone National Park where, below the waves, you will discover a huge sunken mail ship that makes an exciting diving and snorkelling site! Once you’ve had your fill of shipwrecks, you can sail for the famous “Baths” – a 40-foot rock formation at the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda where you can follow a path through the rocks and splash around in the rock pools.

After having a good soak, you can hike up to the Top of the Baths restaurant and bar for refreshing drinks. Hop back on board and cruise along the coastline of Virgin Gorda. You may wish to stop off at one of the stunning beaches before anchoring for the night in a well-protected harbor thanks to the surrounding reefs and islands including Richard Branson’s Necker Island. Consider a drink at Leverick Bay, or even better the Saba Rock Resort, and watch the fish feeding at sundown.

Day 4: Virgin Gorda to Anegada

Anegada BVI Itinerary

The North Sound Virgin Gorda is a boater's paradise; you will find a plethora of beautiful anchorages and some of the finest resorts and restaurants in the Caribbean. It is the perfect place to make the most of your onboard water toys – so why not get out on the water and use your onboard Seabobs or E-Foil to do laps of your BVI crewed catamaran?

On your one-tack sail up to Anegada , you will pass by Richard Branson's exclusive Necker Island, and then sail the open Atlantic. When you see a number of catamarans moored together, you've reached your destination and will anchor with them. Anegada is quite different from the other BVI islands, as it is composed entirely of coral, and it is known for excellent snorkelling on its reefs and long, white beaches.

Once you've arrived at Anegada, set up camp on the amazing white-sand beach and play frisbee, and then rent a jeep and head across the island to Loblolly Bay - a heavenly stretch of deserted beaches that will provide you with another level of relaxation. Here you can indulge in sunbathing and lounging on the white sandy beaches and explore the underwater sea life on the beautiful reef. We would suggest a quick pitstop in the Anegada Beach Club to sample their Painkiller, maybe it will be your favorite in the BVI?

On your way back, you might even glimpse the famous pink flamingos on the salt pond.

We have always experienced amazing sunsets on Anegada, as you look westward toward Jost Van Dyke in the distance (tomorrow's destination). Make sure you have time to enjoy it, with an appropriate sundowner drink! If you like lobster, your crew will make a reservation to eat at one of the lobster restaurants in the bay, where you will eat beach-grilled lobster caught just that morning! You are destined to sleep well having fully embraced a full Anegada day!

Day 5: Anegada to Little Jost Van Dyke

virgin island catamaran vacations

After breakfast, you will continue to sail southwest towards Jost Van Dyke, following the north side of Tortola. There are often sightings of whales and dolphins on the way up to Little Jost Van Dyke, so be sure to have your camera ready! For those interested in a relaxing massage, you can stop by the famous IXORA Spa on Scrub Island on route, or alternatively we can organise a specialist fishing excursion within the territory, or offshore to try your arm to catch a Wahoo! Speak to your Boatbookings representative for more details!

Day 6: Little Jost Van Dyke to Sandy Spit and White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

virgin island catamaran vacations

On the sixth day of your luxury BVI catamaran charter, head out early to be the first at Sandy Spit, one of our favorite destinations in the BVI. This tiny but beautiful deserted island is a great place for snorkeling and taking a few pictures for your Instagram account. Jump back aboard for a fresh Tuna Poke-inspired lunch, and get ready for a fun-filled afternoon throwing a football at the legendary White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. If you wish, take a dingy ride over to Great Harbor, where you can dance at the renowned Foxy's bar and restaurant, which is one of the most iconic spots in the Caribbean!

Day 7: Soggy Dollar and Foxy's Bar, White Bay, Jost Van Dyke to the Bight, Norman Island

virgin island catamaran vacations

On your final day, you will wake up to the peace and beauty of one the world’s most beautiful beaches: White Bay. Here, it is a tradition to go snorkeling to search for the "soggy dollars" people have lost on the swim back to their boats! After this, you can walk to the end of the beach and climb the hill to get a magnificent view of the White Bay panorama. Lastly, try the requisite "Painkiller" drink at the renowned Soggy Dollar Bar as you watch boats cruising by. Alternatively, head to the lively Foxy's Bar for a couple of cocktails as you sit back and relax on the pure white sand. In the late afternoon, we recommend you start the sail back to the Bight, Norman Island in order to get to Road Town by noon the next day.

Day 8: Return to Road Town, Tortola

virgin island catamaran vacations

Why not make the most of your final moments in paradise and cruise around the point to Privateer Bay on your final morning? Here is the ideal spot for you to have one last crack at snorkeling, waterskiing, paddleboarding or any other water sports you have picked up over the week. Finally, you'll have a beautiful sail across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Road Town and then it is time to say your goodbyes! All good things come to an end, but it really will have been a holiday of a lifetime; you will want to come back year after year!

Terms and conditions, charter experts, llc terms & conditions.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Virgin Islands Yacht Charters directly manages the charter fleet.  We are not a broker.  We do work with many reputable and trustworthy charter brokers who regularly book our boats and are familiar with our procedures and knowledgeable of the local cruising grounds.  At the same time, there are many brokers out there who know absolutely nothing about our fleet OR even the Virgin Islands themselves.  Please be aware.

Catamarans are wonderfully spacious and provide ample area for moving around.  Whether it is in the cockpit or salon which spans over both hulls allowing for a larger area inside, the foredeck with the trampoline  for sun-tanning, or the great lounging area on the top deck you will enjoy the variety of ways to spend your day on the water.  Cats are much more stable than their counterparts which can be much better for new or inexperienced sailors who haven't quite found their sea legs yet or those who are prone to seasickness.   Two engines allow for greater maneuverability when in a marina or picking up mooring balls and thus, have gained popularity in recent years.  And, you will love the panoramic views!

VIYC was one of the best charter companies we've used. They keep their word and honor their promises. They promptly fix stuff and immediately talk us through solvable problems. They know the boat, the waters, and sailing area, the culture.

Scuby's operations briefing was one of the best I've attended in my years of chartering.

I had the pleasure of chartering a yacht from Virgin Islands Yacht Charters out of Compass Point, St Thomas.  I have chartered numerous yachts over the years; as well as operated by own charter sailing yacht for five years.  Kristi and Jim, the owners, do an outstanding job of assuring the yacht is ready to go and in top shipshape.  Any follow up or support if needed is prompt and efficient.  I highly recommend Virgin Islands Yacht Charters.

Fun at The Baths

Jim & Kristi,

Thanks so much for completing our experience. Our past charter experiences in the BVI were a mixed bag of paradise, apathetic service, and mechanically challenged yachts. God made the islands beautiful, you two made sailing them a pleasure by providing friendly service and an excellent line of yachts. This experience felt less like a charter and more like borrowing a great boat from old friends.

We’ll be back…                                                                                          ~Rev. Seth Sundstrom

Myst Yacht Charters

The US Virgin Islands

It’s never been a better time to book a yacht charter..

Virgin Islands Coastline with yacht and bright blue water

About The US Virgin Islands

The USVI consists of 3 main islands, St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, and around 50 smaller islets and cays. The best thing about the USVI is that each island offers something new and unique, allowing you to try USVI yacht charters to explore the waters. St. Croix is the largest island and yet the least popular tourist destination. It is a scuba diver’s paradise and is home to one of the only underwater national monuments in the US-Buck Island Reef National Park. St. Thomas is known for its history and adventure. It offers some of the most sought-after activities in the USVI. So, whether you are looking for relaxation and tranquility or some adventurous fun, then a St. Thomas or St. Croix yacht charter is perfect for you. Last but certainly not least is St. John, the smallest of the main islands but the best preserved. In the end, this particular destination is a traveler’s paradise because there are so many things to do, whether on land or on the sea. Check out our US Virgin Islands yacht charters today.

Fast Facts About The US Virgin Islands

  • You don’t need a passport to go to the USVI.
  • The US Virgin Islands are one of the most COVID-friendly travel destinations for Americans. As the islands are part of the US, they have had the fewest entry restrictions throughout the pandemic and are the least likely to impose new travel restrictions on US Citizens. You also don’t need a COVID test to go back to the mainland as you do with international travel.
  • As a U.S. territory, the currency is the U.S. dollar. Automated teller machines (ATMs) can be found throughout all three islands.
  • Calypso, Soca, and Reggae can all be heard (and danced to) in the USVI.
  • If you are looking for unique things to do in St Thomas, St. John, or St. Croix, why not charter a yacht in the US virgin islands? Paris Hilton celebrated NYE 2021 in the USVI on a private boat.
  • The islands are known for the Larimar stone, so make sure to pick up some jewelry with the stone at one of the local shops.

Best time to visit The US Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands have a tropical climate, meaning visitors can visit them all year round. The best time to visit the islands is from April to June, when the weather is not too hot and there is little to no rainfall. This is the perfect time to visit the Islands because there are fewer crowds. Carnival also happens in St. Thomas from mid-April to May, which is why visiting during this time would be a great idea.

The dry season is from December to May, while June is the start of the wet season. The Island’s peak season is between December and March, and during this time, the temperatures can range from the mid-70s to high-80s, coupled with some cool breezy evenings. September and October are peak hurricane seasons, so if you plan to come during this time, make sure to book some travel insurance.

More Resources About The US Virgin Islands

Guess what? Chartering a yacht to the virgin islands is one of the most social distance vacations you can go on. The best part? You can unpack your bags once and wake up somewhere new every day. How exciting is that? The yacht will bring you to secluded coves and anchorages to snorkel, swim, and even get up close and personal with some sea life.

What to Bring: Tips & Hints on what to pack and expect on board your Caribbean Catamaran Vacation.

It is a good idea to carry valuables, toiletries and a change of clothes in your carry-on-bag in the event that one’s luggage goes astray (thus, unnecessary worry and delay can be avoided).

It is entirely up to you as how formal you would like to be aboard; however, you will find that casual is more fun and easier to relax into and you need half the amount of clothing than you think you do!

Sunscreens: Sunscreens that are PABA-free are preferred. Oils are slippery, staining and intensify the strong sun. So, please, no oil-based sunscreen.

Medications: Special Medications are not always available in the areas you will be visiting so take those that you need with you from home. Take a copy of any prescription medication you have in case of questions by customs officials. If you suffer from motion sickness, it is advisable to take your own medication and I would recommend patches or SEA BANDS.

Money: Traveler’s Checks or cash are the accepted method of payment in most cases. Credit cards are not always accepted and personal checks are never accepted. It is advisable to have a number of smaller denomination traveler’s checks (as some stores do not carry a lot of change).

Documentation: Documents you will need include a passport for each member of your group as well as your Yacht Charter Agreement. Traveling with your yacht charter agreement is a good idea.

Cost not included:

Souvenirs and gifts bought ashore, taxis, island tours, dinners and drinks ashore, telephone, fax and email and special bar requests.

A crew gratuity is left up to your discretion and is usually in the 10%-15% of the charter fee depending on the quality of service you have received. It is payable in cash or traveler’s checks only. Your crew will be working constantly to ensure that you have a great time!

Emergency contact: Please feel free to give my number as your emergency contact numbers: 1-800-478-2029 or 954-720-0475 as we do have ways  of getting in contact with the yacht in most instances. Office calls are forwarded to our personal cell phone after hours and during weekends.

We know that you are going to have a wonderful time and look forward to hearing all about it when you return.

Take care and Bon Voyage! Have loads of fun!

The Ultimate Guide To Deciding Which British Virgin Island You Should Visit

T he British Virgin Islands (BVI) offer travelers an  underrated Caribbean escape filled with sun, sand, and adventure. About 60 isles make up this vacation hot spot just east of Puerto Rico, so BVI visitors have plenty of options when deciding which locale to visit. However, too much choice can make deciding difficult, and figuring out where to spend the bulk of your time can be tricky, though not impossible.

With a go-to island or two for every type of wanderer, heading to the BVI can be everything and more. Whether you prefer a little rest and relaxation or love delving deep into history, art, and cuisine, there is an island for you in this spectacular region of the world. To plan your next holiday in this remarkable part of the Caribbean, you need to zero in on the British Virgin Islands that best match your vacation style since choosing them all likely is not in the budget. Of course, if the budget is bottomless, why not visit each one?

When To Go To The British Virgin Islands

Before deciding where to go in the British Virgin Islands, you should work out the best time for your island escape. Typically, most travelers head to the BVI during peak season, which runs from December through most of April. However, it is worth noting that March is also the perfect time for spring breakers and families to enjoy this overseas territory.

For travelers looking to save a little money and enjoy time well-spent in the British Virgin Islands, the shoulder seasons (April to May and late October through November) are ideal. Similarly, the low season, which includes September and early October, equals even more savings because this section of the Caribbean usually experiences the most rainfall (though still intermittent) around this time of year. On the other hand, early summer is not the best choice, as this is the start of hurricane season there. It is highly recommended that you opt for the other seasons to avoid any possible tropical storms, intense winds, or similar challenging conditions. Visiting at the wrong time is a common mistake people make when planning that dream Caribbean vacation .

What Kind Of Island Getaway Do You Crave?

As you begin to plan your trip to BVI, ask yourself what kind of island getaway is right for you. Travelers ready to relax and keep adventuring to a minimum have ample possibilities. Thanks to all the stunning beaches, lavish resorts, tranquil waters, wellness facilities, and the famed Painkiller cocktails, you will have no trouble kicking back and enjoying the simple things on any of the islands there. However, some spots, like Ixora Spa by Elemis on Scrub Island , take getting pampered on vacation to the next level and are worth considering if first-rate spas are your thing.

Alternatively, plenty is on offer if you come to explore, dive, and more. BVI has no shortage of island adventures available. Still, you will fare better on certain isles than others, depending on the experiences you are interested in. Adventurers headed to BVI can enjoy all kinds of recreational activities on Salt Island (home to the RMS Rhone shipwreck), Norman Island (with The Caves near Treasure Point), or Tortola, which has incredible hiking trails that take you all around Sage Mountain — to name a few. Keep all this in mind when selecting an island or if you opt to create a multi-island itinerary.

The Best Islands For Thrill-Seekers

The BVI includes several islands with everything a thrill-seeker could ever want. However, Tortola should be at the top of your adrenaline-heavy bucket list. The largest isle (and the capital) in BVI, Tortola is a must for any daredevil. From exploring ancient ruins and hiking in the mountains to snorkeling above coral reefs, scuba diving in the brilliant blue depths of the ocean, and enjoying endless water sports, Tortola offers a wide variety of entertainment options. Tortola is also a superb home base, making it easy to get to nearby attractions or other isles for more fun tourist activities.

Norman Island, Marina Cay, and Virgin Gorda are also right around the corner from Tortola and have several daredevil-approved pastimes that will surely get your adrenalin pumping. If you want a little bit of it all plus the convenience of being on the largest island with the most activities, set your sights on Tortola. Whether you are a thrill-seeker, history buff, or beach lover, Tortola is definitely worth considering for your getaway.

The Island That Was Made For Nature Lovers

Speaking of Virgin Gorda, this isle is pure paradise and downright otherworldly, especially for anyone who considers themselves a true nature enthusiast. Its breathtaking views, sweeping landscapes, turquoise waters, unspoiled beaches, dense jungles, fascinating caves, and mesmerizing rock formations are only the beginning of what makes this island so special. One of Virgin Gorda's main attractions is its world-famous Baths, which features some of  the prettiest waters in the world , and visitors come from all over to embrace this tranquil scenery.

The Baths showcase various natural charms, from sandy coves such as the Devil's Bay Beach to wild plants, massive boulders, and ethereal hidden pools. In addition to the must-see Baths, Virgin Gorda also has spectacular national parks, secluded high-end hotels, Gorda Peak, multiple bays (Valley Trunk, Mahone, Pond, Savannah, Leverick, and more), as well as a plethora of nature sanctuaries.

After thoroughly reconnecting with nature, Virgin Gorda visitors can marvel at the various historic sites, stay in first-class accommodations, and check out the local yacht clubs. They can also immerse themselves in all the wonders of Spanish Town (the island's largest city), where restaurants serve world-class cuisine. If all of this aligns well with your vacation goals, why not head to Virgin Gorda?

A Scuba Diver's Dream

Experienced and newer divers flock to the British Virgin Islands since this destination offers some of the best diving on the planet. And at the top of their to-do list is Anegada Island, a diver's dream with its beautiful underwater landscape packed with caves, tunnels, shipwrecks, coral reefs, and abundant sea life. Even on land, Anegada has a fantastic ecosystem and magical-looking terrain (which includes Cow Wreck Beach).

Other islands that are a must if you come to explore the depths of the Atlantic and the Caribbean Seas include Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Cooper Island, and Scrub Island. As mentioned, Tortola is the largest island and a tremendous base for exploring the archipelago, while Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke both have their own unique perks waiting to be discovered beneath the waves. There is no shortage of options, but the focus on underwater delights makes Anegada the obvious place to start, and we don't take the "scuba diver's dream" part of the title lightly. After all, this place was seemingly created with underwater magic at its heart.

An Intimate Island Experience

For travelers looking for a more intimate island experience, Jost Van Dyke is a great option that is also brimming with history. Visitors can explore the past at the sugar mill ruins and better understand the diverse culture around these parts, which shimmers with a mixture of Caribs, Arawak Tribe, Africans, Dutch, and British customs. Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main islands, so curious travelers can easily soak up all of its history over the course of a few days.

Travelers can also take a dip in the delightfully-named Bubbly Pool (a natural hot lagoon or swimming hole), lounge about beachside, get in some water activities via the beach clubs, partake in long walks on the beach, and even book a massage for two at the British Virgin Islands' first-ever floating spa — Ocean Spa . That's not all — Jost Van Dyke is known for its beachside restaurants that range from a quick and tasty bite to eat to exceptional fine dining. If you would like to plan a romantic dinner by the ocean with delicious cuisine, fantastic service, and an amazing sunset serving as the backdrop, then Jost Van Dyke is a wonderful choice. There is also a lovely selection of beachfront villas and hotels that make this island even dreamier and the perfect go-to for couples.

Your Very Own Adventure Island

Beef Island is not only the gateway to the BVI, with the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport calling this particular isle home, but Beef Island is also another magnificent British Virgin Islands location full of adventures and water sports. Connected to Tortola via a convenient bridge, the island acts as a delightful getaway from the central BVI hub, but be aware that there are not as many hotels on Beef Island. Instead, travelers will find more vacation rentals than anything. If you have a larger travel group and want to rent out a lavish villa or a beach house with all the trimmings, Beef Island is worth contemplating as your home base.

In the way of your standard adventuring, Beef Island offers convenient access to nearby attractions, such as The Baths, Can Garden Bay, Trellis Bay, Smuggler's Cove, and other islands. Visitors can also choose their own adventure while staying there, as you can rent just about any water sports equipment and have a fun day in the ocean — surfing, kayaking, and sailing. For foodies, Beef Island is where it is at, with a nice mix of restaurants that offer tastings and more. Plus, the quirky shops, beach clubs, and surrounding scenery will keep you well-entertained for days. If you need more, just cross the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and spend some time in Tortola.

The Perfect Spot To Drop Anchor

Sailboat and yacht enthusiasts looking to drop anchor and revel in some island time will feel right at home at Cooper Island. Located south of Tortola and known for its glistening crystal clear waters, this semi-private island has exactly one grand eco-friendly resort — the  Cooper Island Beach Club . Cooper Island also has a single beach area, so you do not have to worry about getting around or leaving the resort once you touch down.

Thanks to the Cooper Island Beach Club, boat visitors are welcomed and can enjoy shoreside service, dinner, and other amenities. Travelers charting the waters have a few bays in the area, like Manchineel Bay, Carver Bay, Haulover Bay, and Cistern Point, with marinas that are great for day stops. For overnight anchoring, however, Manchineel Bay is the best option. On the other hand, Cooper Island-goers who stay at the resort but still want to set sail have their pick of boat rentals, tours, and short excursions. If spending more time aboard than onshore sounds like your kind of vacation, then opt for Cooper Island.

A Day Trip Worth Taking

Norman Island, or the real-world inspiration for "Treasure Island," is just one more hot spot in BVI that is well worth exploring. Though this island is privately owned, Norman Island is a great day trip perfect for all, including beach lovers, boaters, and adventures. Visitors are permitted to explore most of the island and its surrounding waters. However, they will have to book their accommodations elsewhere -- like on Peter Island, Scrub Island, and other nearby islets.

When it comes to main attractions, the Norman Island Caves definitely steal the show. These gorgeous geological formations are said to hold many tales of actual treasure. With stories of pirates hiding their gold, coral reef-adorned walls, and optimal diving and snorkeling experiences available here, the Norman Island Caves are a must when visiting the BVI. Besides exploring these iconic grottos, travelers can go for a scenic trek along the Norman Island trails, have a marvelous time aboard the  Willy T (a floating pirate ship and bar that frequents the area), go fishing, or just relax for a spell seaside.

The Island For Comfort And Relaxation

Travelers in need of some R & R should consider Scrub Island. This gorgeous and pristine locale has luxury resorts, spas, and a picturesque marina. But the best part is that Scrub Island is a relatively unknown holiday destination, so there are no crowds or over-the-top activities. It is where you head to disconnect and recharge. Sure, visitors can learn to sail, go snorkeling, surf, kayak in paradise, and enjoy the incredible beaches, but there is absolutely no pressure.

If you prefer to spend some time at the spas and indulge in wellness treatments, you will be spoilt for choice. Everything from massages to acupuncture and beach yoga is available on Scrub Island. However, there is no need to panic if being pampered beyond your wildest dreams is not how you like to vacation. Scrub Island-goers can sign up for historical tours, book helicopter rides, go hiking, and even get in on the fun with cultural events like the Full Moon Party at Trellis Bay. Head on over to Scrub Island if you want a getaway that offers a low-key yet diverse Caribbean experience.

A Snorkeler's Delight

Marina Cay is another private island, but it is also so much more — the smallest isle in the British Virgin Islands, the site of a 1930s love story, and only a short hop away from the luxury relaxation of Scrub Island. Rebuilt after damage caused by Hurricane Irma, Marina Cay is a fascinating gem situated right in the middle of the British Virgin Islands. Home to the  Marina Cay Bar & Grill , this island has become known as the archipelago's social center.

With truly rave-worthy snorkeling, swimming, diving, and recreational boating, Marina Cay is a great day trip for anyone looking to appreciate the beauty of nature while having the time of their life. What makes Marina Cay a snorkeler's delight is its calming waters, vibrantly-colored coral, beautiful coves, tropical fish, and seemingly limitless marine life. Travelers of all ages can snorkel around the island and then grab a bite to eat. Marina Cay is a marvel you should add to your to-do list, especially if you are looking to get your snorkel on and see what happens under the sea. That said, a few other isles in the area also have grade-A snorkeling, including Norman Island, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Antigua and Barbuda's Prickly Pear.

Plan An Extended Getaway

Ultimately, with so many options, there is no reason to stay in one place when vacationing in the British Virgin Islands. Moreover, if you are willing to go off the beaten path just a little and extend your BVI getaway, other British Virgin Islands are aplenty. In particular, if possible, destinations such as the Southern Islands, Sandy Cay, Ginger Island, and Guana Island should be added to your holiday itinerary. Though largely uninhabited, the Southern Islands, Sandy Cay, and Ginger Island are still wonderful stop-offs for day-trippers, adventurers, boaters, and water sports enthusiasts.

Guana Island, on the other hand, is a family-owned isle that is essentially one large 5-star resort that is as exclusive as it is lavish. With a variety of accommodations, amenities, and activities, time spent at this  stunning remote island feels downright surreal and like you have stepped into your very own unspoiled paradise. So, if you happen to be a wanderer looking to decompress or a traveling twosome, you definitely should make your way over to Guana Island. Just make sure you book well in advance, as this dazzling resort always sells out fast. And after all this, if you still don't want the magic to end, remember, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas) are only a boat ride away.

This Greek Island Is One of the Most-visited in the World — With Instagram-worthy Views, Romantic Villages, and Relaxed Tavernas

Here’s your ultimate guide to Santorini, the Cycladic showstopper that sets hearts aflutter.

virgin island catamaran vacations

arturbo/Getty Images

Lovers and honeymooners gravitate to Santorini to meander amid cliffside cave houses that hover almost imperceptibly above a lustrous, inky Aegean Sea.

A catastrophic volcanic eruption some 3,600 years ago, which saw half the island swallowed by the sea, is responsible for the dizzying visuals. Famed for its sunsets, photogenic blue-domed whitewashed churches, and intensely mineral white wine, Greek tourism’s poster child has long epitomized romance. It’s no wonder Travel + Leisure readers have repeatedly voted the Cycladic superstar among their favorite islands in the world as recently as 2023. It’s that kind of mind-blowing destination you must experience once in a lifetime.

And while Santorini seems more geared toward couples, you don’t have to be partnered up to enjoy a visit. Most travelers stay in accommodations in one of the caldera-facing villages in northwest Santorini, namely Oia, Fira, or Imerovigli. It’s no coincidence that eight Santorini hotels made it into the top 10 Greece-wide among 2023 T+L reader picks .

Christos Stergiou , a T+L A-List Advisor and the CEO and founder of True Trips, said accommodations on Santorini’s “off-caldera” side are worth considering if you’re looking to dodge the crowds. Cruise ship passengers, in particular, make up many visitors who visit in the peak summer months.

“There’s an advantage to staying on the caldera because you have the views. You exit your hotel, and you’re in the heart of everything,” he said. “In recent years, we’ve seen quite a few hotels opening up inland on Santorini, offering more of a private refuge.”

Stergiou makes a similar recommendation in terms of sightseeing. “Hire a car and follow a road to see where it takes you,” he told T+L. “Or book a private walking tour to explore villages beyond Oia.”

Meanwhile, the island’s food scene has also improved in recent years. High-quality restaurants helmed by prominent chefs have opened within the island’s best hotels, showcasing superior local produce ranging from white eggplant to yellow split pea (fava). Fish tavernas on the waterfront and inconspicuous dining spots in the interior enhance culinary offerings.

Add black sand beaches and historical and cultural attractions, including an enigmatic ancient settlement and wine tasting at small-scale estates.

Dreaming of a Santorini getaway? Here’s how to plan your perfect vacation on the island.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Capture a dreamy Santorini sunset or, better yet, a people-free dawn.
  • Walk around picture-perfect Oia village.
  • Sail the caldera on a catamaran to witness the island’s beauty from the sea.
  • Explore the ancient site of Akrotiri.
  • Sample Santorini’s world-famous wines.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Courtesy of Katikies Santorini

Katikies Santorini

A T+L mainstay, readers voted this elegant hotel as their favorite resort in Greece for 2023 , Katikies Santorini is, after all, one of the island’s luxury hospitality pioneers. Situated in Oia, the 34-room hotel’s guests can avail themselves of experiences such as a private cruise in a sleek 52-foot Riva Rivale motor yacht to unassuming Thirassia islet.

Andronis Boutique Hotel

A consistent T+L World’s Best winner , this caldera-facing Oia resort echoes traditional cave houses, once home to seafarers. Of Andronis Boutique Hotel ’s 25 accommodation options, the largest and most lavish is the Prestige Suite. Emmanuel Renaut, chef and founder of three Michelin-starred Flocons de Sel, curates the menu at in-house restaurant Lauda.

Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection

Oozing elegance, this pristine white boutique hotel looks out over enigmatic Skaros Rock and the caldera. T+L readers proclaimed Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection to be Europe’s best hotel in 2021 . Located in Imerovigli, the resort features a sizable infinity pool and, for the deepest pockets, a sprawling villa.

Best Things to Do

Hike between inland villages

A classic trek runs across the rim of the caldera, from Fira to Oia, with pit stops in the villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli and at Skaros, the first castelli (fortress) built on the island. Alternatively, hike ancient trails through the authentic settlements of Pyrgos, Exo Gonia and Mesa Gonia. Santorini Walking Tours offers small group and private guided options.

Take a boat tour of the caldera

No Santorini visit is complete without witnessing the caldera from the sea. Step aboard a catamaran for a private or small group day or sunset cruise . You’ll have the opportunity to swim and snorkel, take a dip in hot (lukewarm, actually) springs off the volcanic islets of Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni and view a 19th-century lighthouse.

Explore ancient Akrotiri

Akrotiri is one of Europe’s most significant ancient settlements. Santorini’s fiery eruption preserved it in Pompeii fashion but, strangely enough, no human remains have been found. Take a tour with a state-licensed guide to learn what life was like in this advanced Mediterranean Bronze Age city. Key excavation finds are on display at the Museum of Prehistoric Thira in Fira.

Sample Santorini’s great whites

Assyrtiko, Santorini’s best-known wine, might make up about 90 per cent of production, however, the island lays claim to around 50 indigenous grapes. Book a tour with oenologist Iliana Sidiropoulou who leads private tours where you’ll learn about the singular terroir, view an archaic pruning method and sample wines at family-owned estates.

Swim at a black sand beach

Santorini features some pretty cool beaches. Among them is Perivolos, known for its black sand and invigorating, deep blue waters. Located in the southeast, here you’ll find water sports like jet skiing, along with buzzy beach bars and casual restaurants. As the sun goes down, turn up the romance with a shoreline wander to admire the rocky peaks of Mesa Vouno rising up to the north.

Best Restaurants

Carol Yepes/Getty Images

Selene, Katikies Garden Hotel

Founded by self-taught chef Giorgos Hatzigiannakis, Selene is the stuff of Santorinian culinary legend. With reverence and ingenuity, Botrini today helms the restaurant that brought reimagined island fare to the fore. Splurge on a tasting menu, featuring dishes like cured bonito with rock samphire, local cucumber katsouni and pistachio paired with wines selected by Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis.

Varoulko Santorini, Grace Hotel

Chef Lefteris Lazarou, whose Piraeus restaurant carries a Michelin star, quietly demonstrates his expertise with fish at his Santorini outpost. Linger over a laidback a la carte lunch at Varoulko Santorini or book for dinner, where degustation menus feature refined monkfish soup and crispy sea bream with smoked eggplant mousse, among other highlights.

In Vourvoulos, away from the celebrated caldera, you’ll find Roza’s . Seasonality reigns supreme at this downhome dining spot owned and run by a Georgian cook and her Greek husband. Rice-stuffed vine leaves with smoked eel and lime foam count among the delectable offerings, while there are plenty of vegan options.

Best Time to Visit

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

“Late September through early October is the best time to visit Santorini. Crowds are thinner, prices are better, the weather is generally fantastic and the sea is warm,” Stergiou said. The shoulder season from late April through May is also a good time to schedule a trip though keep in mind the Aegean is still too cold for swimming, at least for most people. June offers long, languid summer days, making it a popular month. July and August are the busiest and hottest months of the year. And while rainy days are rare in spring or fall, it can be chilly. Stergiou said winter wasn’t an ideal time to visit as it’s mostly cold and damp and that’s also when construction and renovations occur.

How to Get There

The quickest way to reach Santorini is by plane. Flights from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Santorini operate daily and take about 50 minutes. For those who prefer to island hop, take a ferry from Piraeus. A fast catamaran takes around four hours and 40 minutes to reach the island, while conventional ferries require between six hours and seven hours and 45 minutes. Santorini features on many cruise line itineraries including those of Virgin Voyages, Silverstar, Seabourn and SeaDream Yacht Club, though peak season means significant crowds. Viking Cruises and Windstar Cruises operate Mediterranean itineraries that encompass Santorini in winter.

Areas to Visit

Santorini’s best-known village draws the crowds to its cobblestoned alleyways lined with elegant art galleries, boutiques carrying Greek designer labels and the island’s iconic blue-domed churches. Stop in at literary treasure trove Atlantic Books and lose yourself in Oia ’s backstreets to peruse stately neoclassical mansions once home to sea captains. “Everyone knows Santorini for its sunsets but dawn is equally spectacular,” said Stergiou, who suggested rising early, while Oia is still people-free.

Few visitors venture to the low-key inland medieval village of Pyrgos, situated in the southwest, which Stergiou described as “underrated”. By day, visit the chapel atop Profitis Ilias, the island’s highest point, from where you can take in views across the island. Stergiou said he particularly enjoyed walking amid the town’s whitewashed houses in the evening to soak up the atmosphere.

Megalochori

Megalochori , another of Stergiou’s favorites, is brimming with living folklore and tradition. Located in the island’s southwest, the village is characterized by labyrinthine alleyways and ornate bell towers. Immerse yourself in music, art and mythology at family-friendly cultural center Symposion , where youngsters can learn to craft a panpipe. Fun is also guaranteed if you take a cooking class at Petra Kouzina . “There are a few tavernas and they’re all good,” Stergiou added.

How to Get Around

By Rental Car: Book a rental car well in advance, particularly if visiting during summer. “As long as you feel comfortable driving, I always recommend car rental, so that you’re independent,” said Stergiou. “Venture off without choosing a specific destination. Go check out wine country, for example.” Google Maps is mostly reliable.

By Taxi: Silver taxis operate on the island but numbers are limited. Wait times can be long and traffic can spike fares. Cab ranks operate at the airport, Athinios port and near Fira’s central square. They may cost more if booked in advance or via a hotel. Taxis are metered and prices vary. It costs around €17 to €22 to reach Fira from the airport and about €30 to €40 to reach locations further afield.

By bus: Santorini has a fleet of 23 buses known as KTEL that connects all island villages. Fira is the main hub for all bus routes. One-way tickets start from €2 (daytime fare) and €3.10 (night-time fare), respectively.

We took our 7-year-old son to Waikiki for our 10th wedding anniversary. We catered the trip to us, not him.

  • For our 10th wedding anniversary, we wanted to go back to the same place we honeymooned.
  • We decided to bring our 7-year-old son.
  • The trip was catered to what we wanted to do, not his interests, but he still had a blast.

Insider Today

Anniversary trips are about the marriage, not the kids. But we chose to take our little one with us across the Pacific to Hawaii to celebrate 10 years of matrimony. We spent our honeymoon in Oahu, and taking our son back to the island gave us a unique opportunity to see how much we'd changed in the past decade. Since the vacation was about our marital milestone, we catered the trip to us, not our 7-year-old.

The beach is the main attraction in Waikiki, and we had plenty of time playing in the ocean. But out of the water, my husband and I chose what  we  wanted to do . This meant staying in a fancy hotel, eating at nice restaurants, and enjoying plenty of relaxation — no aquariums or water parks. And still, everyone had a fantastic time.

We hiked a trail that my whole family loved

We love to hike, but my little guy can quickly become disinterested. We decided to do the Diamond Head Summit Trail, and the 1.6-mile round trip trek — built in 1908 as part of the US Army Coastal Artillery defense system — entertained him almost immediately. I had a fleeting moment of regret when he started to complain during the initial quarter-mile stretch of concrete path, but he was hooked as soon as we hit the dry dirt trail with intense switchbacks.

The curvy trail only got better as we traveled up and down steep staircases, through a long, narrow tunnel, and past bunkers built in 1915. The summit offered jaw-dropping views of the turquoise coastline.

Our catamaran ride wasn't aimed at kids, but mine had a blast

The big yellow boats conveniently departing from Waikiki Beach are designed for adults, as there's a bar on board, but kids are allowed to join. We chose an early excursion to avoid a party crowd, and the staff couldn't have made us feel more welcome.

We sipped complimentary drinks and enjoyed the ocean views . Our son loved the lively music and the giant splash net at the front of the boat. One staff member even helped him spot a sea turtle swimming below.

Our hotel was  luxurious — even with a seven-year-old

The Royal Hawaiian — or the " Pink Palace of the Pacific " — is the same place we stayed on our honeymoon, and we wanted to stay there again for our anniversary. It's a perfect quiet escape from the busy streets of Honolulu. The airy and elegant historic hotel is the epitome of chic with its pink walls, black-and-white tiled floors, and lush greenery. Plus, their Mai Tai Bar, which makes the best mai tais on the island (in my opinion), has a kid's menu, and my little picky eater loved everything on it.

We opted for a room with a balcony, so when our little one went to bed, we sat outside listening to the waves, chatting, and playing cards.

We enjoyed nightly live music and award-winning restaurants

Instead of Googling "best restaurants for kids in Waikiki," we chose places where we were excited to dine. Our two favorites were Duke's Waikiki and Merriman's. We were drawn to Duke's for its nightly live music and oceanfront location, the upbeat tunes, tiki torches, and tacos kept us happy all night.

The award-winning Merriman's was also a hit. Its farm-to-table Hawaiian cuisine was our favorite meal on the island. Our 7-year-old went so far as to say he'd had "the best pasta of my life." In my husband's opinion, they also made the best mai tai on the island, rivaling those at the Royal Hawaiian. Only adding to our experience, our lovely waiter talked to our son just as much as he chatted with us.

Full disclosure: no matter where we dined, the notepad and box of crayons I kept in my purse proved magical.

We all learned something new at our first Hawaiian luau

We went to a luau, and it was a highlight of the trip. When we arrived, our family got matching Kukui Nut Leis and temporary tattoos, plastic ponchos when it rained, and enough Hawaiian food and tropical drinks to last us all night. Throughout the three-course sampling of local dishes, my husband and I tried so many new culinary treats, including poi and pink haupia cake. Our son dined on fried chicken, which he loved almost as much as his virgin piña colada.

As expected, the entertainment was a mix of music, hula dancing, and storytelling. Not quite as expected, we saw a rainbow over Diamond Head and learned so much about Hawaiian history and culture .

Will we cater every vacation to us rather than to our son? No, and I wouldn't want to. But this family trip is one I'll never forget, and not only because my husband's new morning uniform is his recently acquired Royal Hawaiian pink and white striped hotel robe.
