Boat Review: Viking 52 Convertible

The Vikings were a legendary seafaring people. They charted new territories. They visited America long before Columbus was born. They were ferocious warriors in battle and rarely came out of a skirmish in second place. Yep Viking Yachts is aptly named.

**Performance **Viking boats are known for running fast and handling seas with aplomb. The new 52 continues the Viking family heritage with no apologies. If the power-assist steering were any more sensitive or responsive, it would react to your pulse. Slow-speed performance also shines, with spinning and backing down accomplished more quickly than an angler could reel.

The Viking 52 exhibits little bow rise when coming up onto plane and continues to run with a flat inclination angle. The running surface has received some changes over previous Vikings, such as narrowed and re-angled chines for a smoother ride and for channeling spray downward, respectively. With a northwest wind blowing at 15 knots, we didn’t have to go far offshore before the flat seas along Singer Island, Florida, picked up to 4 to 6 feet. While trolling in the beam sea off Jupiter as well as when kite fishing, the Viking 52 showed remarkable roll stability.

Glendining electronic controls allow super-smooth throttle and gear movement as well as synchronizing and trolling/low-idle modes. MAN engines (both the standard 10-cylinder models and the 12-cylinder optional power plants our test boat sported) feature a low-speed function where one bank of cylinders drops out at lower speeds to conserve fuel.

The Viking 52 also responds amazingly well to a turn of the wheel at idle speeds quite an uncommon ability. Down-sea and in quartering seas at 30 knots, the 52 tracked perfectly. So here’s the bottom line on performance: Driving the Viking 52 poses so little challenge that a skilled helmsman could quickly become bored.

I found this Viking to have what seemed a comparatively small wake running at 37 knots. And at trolling speed, you couldn’t ask for more pronounced, clear alleys in which to run your baits.

**Flybridge **As elsewhere, Viking provides storage in all the usual places on the flybridge. Viking always gives the helmsman superior visibility in all directions. A scallop in the forward brow dramatically improves your view of the bow. Standing at the helm, you can see the aft half of the fighting chair and cockpit. And finally, the ergonomics of the helm station could hardly be improved. The outboard half of the console cants aft for easy access and better display viewing. Everything is within easy reach without your needing to leave the wheel. Being safety-conscious, I also appreciated the ladder to the tower. It has enough room to climb comfortably, yet it’s tight enough to feel secure a masterful bit of engineering.

**Cockpit **Everywhere you look aboard this Viking, a sense of stark cleanliness overwhelms you. This is especially true in the cockpit. Hidden storage for gaffs, mops, shore cables and hoses abound under the gunwales. The modules for the deep freeze, tackle center, engine-room access and the like have no visible latches, and since everyone sits on the modules anyway, I fancied the cushions Viking included there.

About the only improvements I would like to see here apply not only to Viking, but to all convertible sport-fishermen: First, there’s never a dedicated trash receptacle that you can lift out and empty. Second, once you rig dead baits, there’s no place to store them without placing a cooler in the cockpit. I’d like to see a refrigerated bait locker (not a freezer) to keep the cockpit uncluttered.

Viking has incorporated a unique feature I haven’t seen on other boats. Under-decks on both sides act as collection boxes for the scuppers to help drain water off the deck quickly. Combined with a gasketed transom door, they keep the cockpit sole from collecting water under all but the most extreme conditions.

**Interior ** You can choose between two interiors in the 52. Both versions sport a queen berth cabin with private head and shower to port, and an over/under berth cabin to starboard. The difference between the plans comes down to your choice of a queen-size island berth on centerline in the fo’c’sle, or over/under berths. Either way, the forward cabin shares a head and shower with the starboard stateroom.

You’ll find a standard layout in the salon, though the dinette might seat five rather than the usual four adults. Viking also does a terrific job supplying cabinetry and storage space.

**Engine Room **To get a boat to look as low-slung, fast and sleek as the Viking 52, a vertical compromise must take place. In the case of the 52, it can be found in the engine room, where headroom is just less than 5 feet. However, in this space, that is the only compromise to be found. Quiet machinery lines the forward bulkhead, while generators sit aft, away from the living quarters. Plumbing and wiring all run in organized fashion with appropriate labels and anti-chafe through bulkheads. And general maintenance items can all be readily accessed on centerline and against the aft bulkhead.

All told, this 52 lives up to the Viking tradition of winning battles at sea. Expect to see plenty of them on the water next year.

Viking 52 Convertible

Viking’s new 52 Convertible offers all of the legendary fishing and handling characteristics of its larger sisterships in a somewhat smaller package. Fishing features include a 145-square-foot cockpit with a built-in bait freezer, tackle and rigging center, and large fishbox under the cockpit sole. There are two additional storage wells beneath the deck, one of which can be converted to a 40-gallon live well, plus raw and fresh water washdown and a walk-through transom door.

Belowdecks, the 52 offers a luxurious three-stateroom layout with the master stateroom to port, complete with a private head. The forward guest stateroom can be ordered with either a queen berth or upper/lower berths, and the starboard guest stateroom also features upper/lower berths. A fully equipped galley includes drawer-style refrigeration, plus a convection/ microwave and an electric stovetop.

The engine room is accessed from the cockpit and is finished in bright white Awlgrip. A 21 kW generator comes standard, and standard power is twin ten-cylinder 1,050-hp MAN 2840LE403 turbocharged diesels, which Viking claims will produce a 30-knot cruise speed. Used Viking 52 Convertible For Sale

The Viking 52 Convertible, launched in 2014, was updated from its preceding model, that was built between 2002-2008, with a new interior design. From cockpit steps, the entrance to the spacious salon/galley/dinette area is to port. The salon now features the L-shaped sectional lounge with cocktail table to starboard aft with the L-shaped galley starboard forward. The galley features an island with 2 bar stools and is directly across from the dinette that is now forward portside. A large flatscreen TV mounted on bulkhead over dinette is viewable from all seating areas. Cabinetry with Bose home theater surround sound entertainment system, bottle storage, and main electrical panel is on aft port side opposite the sectional lounge which converts to a sofa bed. The opulent designer interior with gleaming teak joinery, accents, and furniture, fluted valances, window treatments, headliner accents, custom furnishings and décor, pleasing earth-tone palette, polished hard-surface counters, mood lighting, designer materials and more, create an ambiance of comfortable luxury for relaxing, entertaining, and travel to distant fishing grounds.

DESCRIPTION

The standard 3-stateroom, 2-head accommodations layout has changed as well—companionway is on portside between the dinette and galley. The laundry center with washer and dryer is at foot of steps, to port. The amidships master stateroom with ensuite head and shower is now on starboard side. The guest stateroom in forepeak features crossover bunks with a double lower bunk and single upper bunk. Viking offers an optional centerline queen berth arrangement. The third stateroom with over/under bunks is portside and the guest/day head is in between. Both guest staterooms have private access to the guest head with separate shower stall. All three staterooms are nicely appointed and comfortable with the meticulous craftsmanship and elegant style Viking is known for, and all three staterooms feature maple-lined storage.

The galley has a full array of appliances hidden in handle-free gleaming teak cabinets for a modern, uncluttered look. Deep drawer refrigerator and freezer units are under countertop. The 3-burner cooktop is recessed in counter with matching Corian cover. A microwave/convection oven and stainless steel undermounted sink with garbage disposal are also standard, along with easy-care Amtico flooring. As with all Viking convertible sportfish yachts, the 52 Convertible is designed to be highly fishable. The open flybridge features Viking’s exclusive center console helm station with two bucket seats in front of console and flanking lounges—portside lounge has an aft-facing jumpseat. The 52 Convertible can be customized with any of Viking’s options, such as a custom tuna tower by Palm Beach Towers, riggers, rocket launcher arrays, electric teaser reels, custom navigation, communications, and entertainment electronics packages from Atlantic Marine Electronics, and other equipment and accessories, for turnkey delivery.

The 142 sq ft cockpit with Viking’s exclusive observation mezzanine features cushioned seat sections that lift for engine room access and bait freezer compartment. Salon entry step has an insulated drink box that can be refrigerated as an option. On portside is a molded fiberglass cabinet with tackle drawers under the athwartship aluminum ladder to bridge aft deck. Bridge overhang shades the mezzanine below. Large in-sole insulated fishbox and an in-sole 40-gallon well that can be plumbed as a livewell or used for ice storage (fed from optional Eskimo ice maker in engine room), are standard. An in-sole backing plate is ready to support an optional fighting chair—the mezzanine is curved to allow more space around back of fighting chair. Standard cockpit sole is non-slip fiberglass. Teak sole and trim is optional. The gated transom door is on portside. Transom can have a built-in fishbox or livewell. Rupp rod holders are flush mounted in gunwales. Lockers under gunwales hide shore power and water connections, Glendinning Cablemaster lines, cable TV and phone connections and provide storage for accessory equipment. Viking makes it easy for owners to arrange and outfit the cockpit to their personal fishing style.

Built tough to take on challenging sea conditions, the 52 Convertible hull changes are based on “sistership” 62 EB Convertible. Viking’s build method of resin-infused hull, in a matrix of composite materials—foam and end grain balsa coring, Kevlar®, Aramid and E-glass knitted fiberglass laminates, is engineered to reduce weight while adding strength. Carbon fiber is used in the one-piece deckhouse assembly in its composite structure. Construction and materials are engineered to enhance strength to weight ratio for greater performance and efficiencies. Hull is designed with sharp forward entry to cut through head seas and a convex hull shape for greater buoyancy. Molded bottom strakes enhance lift. The modified-V hull transitions to 11.8 degrees deadrise at transom for greater speed and throttle response—as with all current Viking convertibles, as Viking strives to improve with each new build. Viking’s vertical integration and state-of-the-art production methods have led to capabilities close to that of custom boat builders, but with shorter delivery times.

The Viking 52 Convertible length overall (LOA) is 53’2” with a beam of 17’6” and draft of 4’11”. Fuel capacity is 1,202 gallons, water capacity is 186 gallons, and holding tank is 57 gallons. Gross weight with standard fuel load is 67,680 lbs.

Power Options for the 52C are twin MAN V8 1000CRM 1000 hp (Base) and twin MAN V12 1400CRM 1400 hp (Option).

Viking Moscow Tour

I would like to find out if the Viking tour in Moscow goes inside the Armory Museum. For some reason no one at Viking is able to answer this question. I appreciate your help.

not sure if still doing it....look on website,,,it should say see armory museum,,,,or try calling again and speak to supervisor ,not just phone operator....if not, you can go on own when they drop you off at Red Square...gave us a few hrs. Also, we took a taxi back,not bus, to stay in area longer...but,,,do get the docking directions in Russian for taxi driver.About one half hr.drive from city to dock....you ll love the trip...one of our favorite....small cities are great too...do get guidebook for more info...envy you....:)

We asked Viking to send us the day by day itinerary LONG before our upcoming 6/10 trip so that we could analyze just what was included and what we needed to do a private tour for.

I did not see any indication of going to the Armory Museum so we have arranged to go there as part of our private tour on one of Viking's "at leisure" days.

Yes, our Viking tour of the Kremlin included a guided tour of the Amoury. More info on what is included in the Armoury can be found at this site - http://www.kreml.ru/en/main/museums/armoury/

Can you advise specifically where you were told you'd have a guided tour of the Armory? I just reviewed the day by day itinerary from Viking and although I see a Kremlin Tour on Day 4, I don't see anything about the Armory???

I also see an OPTIONAL TOUR on Day 3 to the Military Museum, but I didn't think that was the same as the Armory???

know on ours it was inc. when we took Kremlin tour...very close in Red Square area....it was only 1 hr tops, so you may want to call Viking and see ....if you re really into that stuff ,as my husband is, it may not be long enough for you and will appreciate taking your own private tour...its been a few yrs.and they sometimes change tours...maybe even names of things in Russia,maybe now more politcally correct than Armory,eh? Regardless, great cruise.....we loved the smaller towns too,very scenic,quaint,etc....hope they still have the vodka tasting class onboard,,,quite well attended,hahaha...also, had great lectures by a female PH,d in history that were very informative.It was one of my favorite cruises,,you ll have a great time....:)

Yeah, I don't see it in the itinerary either. I agree you should call Viking again and ask what's specifically included in the Kremlin tour. We toured the armoury and one church, plus the grounds. The Armoury has some arms and weapons, but also has fabulous silver, clothing items, and the royal carriages. It's not all military. So if they mention including those types of displays on the Kremlin tour, they should be able to follow up and confirm that it's the Amoury for you.

We had great time on this cruise - even on an older boat!

We were with Viking last July, and the armory was definitely part of the Kremlin tour. It is my understanding that it is always part of the Kremlin tour if it is open.

If you are interested in military items, plan to go on the optional tour to the military museum, which should be offered on the second full day that you are in Moscow.

Hi ! let me disclose that I work for Viking, and then, let me answer the question. Over the last few years, getting tour groups into the armory has become increasingly difficult. It has gotten to a point where we felt if became impossible to provide people with a good experience as part of a group visit to the Kremlin, which is why, with heavy hearts, we decided to not bring our groups there any longer. You will find, however, that there is plenty of free time in Moscow and while we offer things to do, we can also assist you in making your own plans, should you want to visit the armory on a private tour. The ship's staff is happy to help. We hope you'll have a wonderful cruise !

I have just returned from a St. Petersburg-Moscow cruise on the Viking Kirov and the above advice is not accurate, at least in my experience.

The number of visitors to the Armoury are limited, so it is is not part of the included tour of the Kremlin. However, it IS available as an optional tour added on to the regular Kremlin tour.

On our cruise, 100 places were available (and all were taken) at a cost of 32 units (ie Euros) per person. Thus of the six buses that went to the Kremlin, four included the Armoury and two did not.

The Armoury tour took about an hour or so (1hr30 is the max allowed) and I thought that this was adequate--although the collection is so stunning that one could study these exhibits for much longer. The tour did not include the Diamond Fund exhibit, but I didn't really miss it given the splendours of the rest of the exhibits.

After the Armoury tour, we continued the rest of the Kremlin tour, which included the interior of the Uspensky Cathedral. The non-Armoury tours also visited the interior of another cathedral (not sure if it was the Archangel or the Assumption).

All in all, it was a most interesting and enjoyable tour.

I just returned from Moscow Sunday Aug 22, 2010.

When it comes to reading reports, check the dates first.

I went to the Armed Forces Museum which is totally different than the Armory. The AFM has the wreckage of the U-2 Gary Powers flew. They have many glass case exhibits of small arms, a small tank or two, WW2 Lend Lease documentation. Information about their atomic bomb and all things war related.

Evidently there was lots more that was not on exhibit.

In the back yard they have rocket launchers, several MIG airplanes, a few helicopters, a few bigger missiles and an armored train. It was raining and damp and I did a quick tour taking pictures of the planes and then following up with a picture of the exhibit description so I could “connect the dots later,”

The Armory is inside the Kremlin. It is totally different. You will find all kinds diamond encrusted swords, daggers, medals, Faberge eggs. Purportedly the diamonds on the swords “were to blind the enemy” and gain an advantage. Then there is clothing, jewelry and all things not war related like multi-ton horse drawn carriages. Yes, one was one that was 5000 pounds that took several horses to pull it. Make an attempt to touch an exhibit and an alarm goes off letting everyone know what you did.

Be prepared to go through a thorough airport security screening type of entrance. If you look carefully, there are cameras in the ceiling everywhere and motion sensors too. Remember, this is the home of the former KGB and you never know who is watching you. So, keep you hands in your pockets.

The Military Museum was 39 units or Euros

The Armory tour was 32 Euros.
