She’s fast. So fast that back in 1998 she scorched around the globe in less than 80 days, setting a new Guinness World Record with a time of 74 days, 20 hours and 58 minutes.

She’s got the range, too. Over 4,000 miles on a single tank. New York to London with fuel to spare. A range that, over the years, has helped her circumnavigate the world no fewer than six times.

And she’s helped change the world. As part of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) fleet since 2010, this rugged 109-foot trimaran has locked horns with Japanese whaling ships in the Antarctic, Chinese squid boats off the Galapagos, and tackled Bluefin poachers in the Mediterranean.

The 109-footer was designed to set a circumnavigation record, which she did in 1998, circling the world in less than 75 days.  Nigel Irens

Now, the legendary Brigitte Bardot , with a for-sale sign in her wheelhouse window, is ready and raring for her next adventure. “Vessels don’t come more unique than this,” Joaquin Genrich, the listing broker with Fraser Yachts , told Robb Report . “It could take a family completely off the grid. Throw off the lines and you could get from Puerto Vallarta, where she is right now, to Tahiti on one tank.”

Designed by British multihull guru Nigel Irens and originally named Cable & Wireless Adventurer , this needle-nosed rocket ship was built in 1997 by British yard Vosper Thornycroft for the sole purpose of circling the world in less than 80 days. Mission accomplished, she was renamed Ocean 7 Adventurer , relocated to Cape Town, South Africa, and started a new career as a charter vessel.

In December 2007, she hit the headlines when she charged into the Southern Ocean to perform a daring rescue of the demasted racing yacht  Delta Dore. After locating the yacht, she towed it 960 miles back to Cape Town. Three years later, she was bought by Sea Shepherd, renamed Gojira —that’s Japanese for Godzilla—and sent off to track down illegal Japanese whaling factory ships in the Antarctic. In locating the Nisshin Maru whaler in the icy Ross Sea, Gojira set a record for traveling farther south than any other multihull in history.

bardot

Sea Shepherd bought her in 2010 and used her to hunt illegal poaching vessels, including Japanese whale-factory ships and Chinese squid boats in the Galapagos.  Nigel Irens

When the Japanese owners of the Godzilla movie franchise threatened legal action for unauthorized use of the trademark, SSCS changed the vessel’s name to Brigitte Bardot, in honor of the French model and actor and her long-standing support of Sea Shepherd.

Since then, the trimaran has traveled to all four corners of the world; Australia, New Zealand, the Faroe Islands, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and even Key West, where she helped protect turtles from poachers. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the boat was relocated from the Galápagos Islands, where she was on patrol, to Marina Riviera Nayarit, in La Cruz outside Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A few weeks ago, the decision was taken to sell.

“These days Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is working more with governments and requiring larger vessels that can accommodate military personnel. Sadly, she’s become too small for our needs,” says Octavia Carranza, who captained Brigitte Bardot on missions to Peru in 2018.

Bardot

The vessel was named Gojira—Japanese for “Godzilla”—but when the movie’s producers threatened legal action, she became ‘Brigitte Bardot,’ who is a big supporter of Sea Shepherd.  Fraser Yachts

“We’ll definitely be sorry to see her go. She’s a remarkable vessel. Extremely fast, cruising easily at 22 to 25 knots. What I always found amazing was sitting on the bridge and watching her slice through the water like a knife,” Captain Carranza told Robb Report .

Prospective buyers should remember that this is not some pristine luxury motoryacht. Far from it. Since her first day on the water, she’s been driven hard and put away wet. Her interior is no-frills-basic at best. Two years ago, she was expensively re-powered with two new 500-horsepower Cummins QSC 8.3-liter turbo diesels, replacing the previous 350-horse versions. Top speed is now close to 30 knots.

Genrich says the boat’s comparatively low $1.499 million asking price leaves plenty of room for a comprehensive refit. He is also quick to point out that Sea Shepherd is a “highly motivated” seller.

Bardot

Repowered recently, the yacht has a new top speed of 30 knots. She has circled the globe six times in her 32-year history.  Fraser Yachts

Who’s going to buy her? Genrich reckons it might be someone looking to head out on another world-circling adventure. Or someone eager to own a piece of history. Or someone who just wants to own a really cool boat.

“One thing’s certain, Brigitte Bardot will take you anywhere you want,” he says.

Vosper Thorneycroft trimaran Brigitte Bardot sold

The 33.17 metre Vosper Thorneycroft trimaran motor yacht Brigitte Bardot has been sold with the buyer and seller represented by Joaquin Genrich of Fraser .

A unique offering on the brokerage market, Brigitte Bardot was purpose-built by UK-based Vosper Thornycroft to set the record for a complete global circumnavigation in less than 80 days, which she achieved in 1998, the year of her launch. She travelled more than 22,600 nautical miles in just 74 days, 20 hours and 58 minutes and was awarded a Guinness World Record for her achievement.

The trimaran was built in GRP to a design by Nigel Irens and can accommodate up to 12 guests across six commercial-style cabins. Formerly known as Ocean 7 Adventurer , she joined the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society fleet in 2010 and was renamed Brigitte Bardot in honour of the French actress who accompanied Captain Paul Watson on Sea Shepherd’s seal defence campaign in Canada in 1977.

Power comes from twin 500hp Cummins diesel engines, installed in 2018, delivering a top speed of 27 knots and a range of 3,500 nautical miles. Brigitte Bardot also sets the record for travelling further south than any other multi-hulled yacht and would be well suited to an adventurous new owner.

The asking price of Brigitte Bardot has been withheld.

Sea Shepherd Ship, Brigitte Bardot, Has Arrived In The Faroe Islands

Thursday, 18 Jun, 2015

The Australian-registered Brigitte Bardot arrives in the Faroe Islands

The  Brigitte Bardot  was met by nine Faroese police officers, but was not boarded. The vessel and crew cleared customs without incident.

The crew of the  Brigitte Bardot  takes their place alongside the Sea Shepherd land team, including Land Team Leader, Rosie Kunneke of South Africa, and Campaign Co-Leader, Scottish actor Ross McCall, who arrived on the Island archipelago earlier in the week.

Captain of the  Brigitte Bardot , Wyanda Lublink of the Netherlands, said, “My crew and I are honored to stand with our dedicated land team in defense of the pilot whales. We are determined to do all that we can within the limits of the law to bring light to this outdated and unjustifiable slaughter.”

For hundreds of years the people of the Danish Faroe Islands have been herding migrating pilot whales from the sea into shallow water and slaughtering them in a practice called the 'grindadráp' or 'grind'.

Campaign Co-Leader, Ross McCall greets Brigitte Bardot Captain, Wyanda Lublink. Photo: Mayk Wendt

In 2014, Denmark actively collaborated with the Faroese whalers when the Danish Navy arrested eight Sea Shepherd crewmembers and seized three Sea Shepherd small boats for acting in defense of a pod of pilot whales targeted in a grind.

Earlier this week, while campaigning for the upcoming Danish national elections, Danish Prime Minister Helle Throning-Schmidt voiced her support of the on-going slaughter of cetaceans in the Faroe Islands.

“There is a major inconsistency between the Faroe Islands claiming to be exempt from EU law, and at the same time being protected by Denmark, a member of the EU, to do so. Without the money, resources and political support provided by Denmark to the Faroe Islands, the practice of the grind, which flouts EU law, would not be able to continue.” said Captain Alex Cornelissen, CEO of Sea Shepherd Global and Campaign Leader of  Operation Sleppid Grindini .

Operation Sleppid Grindini  will be Sea Shepherd’s sixth Pilot Whale Defense Campaign in the Faroe Islands. The Sea Shepherd ships  Sam Simon  and  Bob Barker , both registered in the Netherlands, will shortly join the rest of the Sea Shepherd crews, making this Sea Shepherd’s strongest at-sea presence in the region to date.

Faroese police officers were on-ground to meet the Sea Shepherd ship on its arrival in Tórshavn

History [ ]

Operation no compromise [ ].

MVGojira

The vessel as the Gojira

Originally known as the Cable and Wireless Adventurer , the ship set a world circumnavigation record of 80 days in 1998, later beaten by the Ady Gil . The vessel went through many owners and names before being acquired by Sea Shepherd and named Gojira , Godzilla in Japanese, to replace the sunken Ady Gil . The vessel was painted Sea Shepherd black with Godzilla on the bow. The Gojira proved its effectiveness during Operation No Compromise under the command of Captain Locky MacLean. It assisted in disabling the Yushin Maru No. 3 and slowed down the Nisshin Maru enough for the Bob Barker to catch up. The highlight of the campaign is when they found the whaler's supply ship Sun Laurel and tailed them.

After the campaign, the Godzilla franchise notified Sea Shepherd that they could not use the name Gojira, so the name was changed to the Brigitte Bardot , after the French actress who is a supporter and board member of Sea Shepherd. The entire vessel was repainted silver with a picture of Brigitte Bardot with a Jolly Roger flag on either side of the bow.

Operation Ferocious Isles [ ]

The Brigitte Bardot played a crucial role during Operation Ferocious Isles in the Faroe Islands when the Steve Irwin was delayed. The ship traveled throughout the islands, watching for possible grinds. While tied up in port, the ship was surrounded by angry locals at night who harassed the crew until police showed up. The next morning, a drunk man untied the Brigitte Bardot' s mooring line. The ship monitored the beaches of the island, at one point discovering a whale graveyard. Towards the end off the campaign, the Brigitte Bardot joined the Steve Irwin in successfully driving a pod of whales away from the shore.

Operation Divine Wind [ ]

During Operaton Divine Wind, the vessel was placed under the command of Jonathan Renecle, who had worked onboard the ship before it joined Sea Shepherd. In late December of 2012, a rogue wave snapped the left pontoon of the ship, severely crippling the Brigitte Bardot . The vessel survived a storm and the Bob Barker and Steve Irwin quickly rushed to its aid. The Brigitte Bardot was escorted back to port by the Steve Irwin , while being tailed by the Shonan Maru No. 2 . The ship was repaired and reinforced and was able to take part in the next campaign.

Operation Zero Tolerance [ ]

In Operation Zero Tolerance, the Brigitte Bardot was captained by French sailor Jean Yves Terlain, who previously sailed for the World Wide Fund for Nature. It was the first vessel to encounter the whaling fleet, spotting and pursuing the Yushin Maru No. 3 . While attempting to flee from the harpoon vessel, the engines were overworked and failed. The Brigitte Bardot returned to port as prolonged exposure to the dangerous Antarctic waters increased the risk of another accident.

Operation Sleppið Grindini [ ]

The Bridget Bardot took part in the 2015 campaign in the Faroe Islands. Just like in Grindstop and Ferocious Islands Sea Shepherd was harassed by drunken Danish whalers who cut their mooring lines and attacked the crew. The Danish Navy showed up and impounded the small boats belonging to the Sam Simon, the Bob Barker, and the Bridget Bardot. Sea Shepherd has since replaced these boats when all three vessels were drydocked in Germany.

Drydock [ ]

The Brigitte Bardot was drydocked at the end of 2015 to repair damage to the hull. The vessel has since been transferred to Sea Shepherd France and is being used as a patrol vessel off the African coast.

Operation Mare Nostrum I,II, and III, Operation Siracusa, and Operation Bluefin III [ ]

As of 2016 The Bardot is back in action and is now in the Mediterranean working for Sea Shepherd France. This year the Bardot is taking part in Operation Mare Nostrum whose goal is to find plastic and illegal ghost nets, and also to take part in Operation Bluefin 3 to stop Bluefin poachers.Upon completion of Operation Bluefin III the Bardot took part in Operation Siracusa. The goal was to stop illegal urchin fishing and to recover gillnets. Upon completion of these campaigns and two years on patrol The Brigitte Bardot was transferred to Sea Shepherd USA on board the floating drydock and yacht transporter Super Servant 3. After a two month voyage from Italy the Brigitte Bardot is in Fort Lauderdale to repair damage to hull. After time in drydock the Brigitte Bardot will move to Sea Shepherd USA's operation base in Key West where she will be prepped for turtle conservation campaigns this summer.

Operation Jairo [ ]

In 2018 the Brigitte Bardot went through a repair overhaul before being reflagged to Dominica Republic. Since Hurricane's Harvey, Ivan, Irma, and Maria Sea Shepherd has been delivering supplies to the islands while also protecting turtles from poachers. On the last day of campaign Sea Shepherd and the Antigua Sea Turtle Project rescued an endangered hawksbill turtle who was cold stunned on the beach from heat stroke after being trapped between a rocky ledge and some drift wood. Sea Shepherd freed the turtle and put it back in the water ending a successful campaign and ensured it's young survive until they hatch.

Decommissioning [ ]

Because of the cost of repairs and damage to the ship in the past campaigns Admiral Paul Watson ordered the vessel struck from the Neptune's Navy register. In 2021 because of COVID 19 Sea Shepherd sold the vessel along with the Alchemy and bought the Conrad to replace them.

Ocean Eagle CMN surveillance trimaran http://cmnnaval.fr/

Okay, it is bigger, but there seems to be a family resemblance between the Ocean Eagle above and the Cable & Wireless Adventurer designed by Nigel Irens

OCEAN EAGLE - FEB 2014

A new concept of trimaran maritime surveillance vessel is under construction at the French shipyard of Chantier Mecaniques de Normandie in Cherbourg. Based on a design developed by British naval architect Nigel Irens this new 43m long design offers very good fuel economy and an extended range to undertake both coastal and ocean monitoring and surveillance. The design is based on trimaran experience developed from the Round the World record breaking vessel Cable and Wireless . This is based on a long thin centre hull that operates efficiently in displacement mode and this centre hull is stabilised by small side hulls supported by wing sections extending out from the main hull at about two third of the length from the bow. This concept has been proved to combine efficiency with excellent seaworthiness. This new design is being built by CMN under a major contract that includes three of these offshore patrol vessels, three conventional 32m patrol boats and a series of 24 fishing vessels of 32m in length that the shipyard is building for the African country of Mozambique. The contract is part of a major expansion of the fishing capability of the country and Mozambique is expanding its enforcement capability with a contract for fast patrol boats placed at a Middle East yard. Whilst the focus of this development is on the expansion of the fishing industry the surveillance vessels are also likely to play a role on the development of the expanding offshore gas reserves in Mozambique. The 43m vessels will be constructed in advanced composites using techniques that have been developed at the CMN subsidiary, JMV Industries, which has specialised in the construction of large composite designs for racing yachts . With its enclosed construction halls CMN will complete the outfitting fully under cover. Called the Ocean Eagle, the new trimaran design will be powered by four Scania diesels, with each one producing 405kW. These will be coupled in the standard Servogear manner with one aft and one forward into a connecting gearbox that will drive the shaft. Twin Servogear controllable pitch propellers with provide the propulsion. It is this propulsion system that contributes to the exceptional economy of the vessel. It allows the vessel to operate on just two of the four diesels , allowing a 3,000 mile range at 18 knots. With all four engines coupled in the speed rises to a maximum of 30 knots. Operating at 12 knots, the range is 5,000 miles. CMN compares the efficiency of the Ocean Eagle to a standard monohull offshore patrol vessel of similar size by saying that the Eagle can operate for 238 miles on one tonne of fuel whilst the monohull would only cover 50 miles on the same amount. The three vessels for Mozambique will be fitted with a helicopter deck aft of the central bridge structure. This will allow for the operation of unmanned air vehicles of up to 300kg, which can be used to extend the range of surveillance. The vessels will also be equipped to carry a 7m RIB tender with a launching ramp at the stern. To add to the economy of this design it can operate with a crew of just 7 officers and ratings, with additional accommodation for 8 passengers. A wide variety of armament can be installed as well as extensive electronic detection and surveillance equipment.

MV Brigitte Bardot in her previous guise as Gojira

MV Brigitte Bardot (formerly Gojira and Ocean 7 Adventurer) is a one of the first high-tech stabilized monohulls. She is 35 m (115 ft) long with twin diesel engines and was designed by Nigel Irens . A stabilized monohull may also be described as a trimaran with smaller outriggers, the ultimate of which is possibly the latest research ship (development tank test model) Bluefish ZCC.

Construction of the Adventurer began in June 1997 and she was launched on 16 March 1998. The official naming ceremony took place on 3 April 1998 in London's West India Dock.

CABLE & WIRELESS ADVENTURER Originally named the Cable and Wireless Adventurer she was built for the purpose of circumnavigating the world in less than 80 days. This was successfully accomplished in July 1998 in 74 days, 20 hours, 58 minutes, traveling more than 22,600 nautical miles (41,855 km). This achievement set a new Guinness World Record for a powered vessel. However, on 27 June 2008 Earthrace (later renamed Ady Gil), the biodiesel powered wave-piercing trimaran, set a new world record when it docked at the Vulkan shipyard in Sagunto, Spain after completing a circumnavigation in just 60 days 23 hours and 49 minutes. The design of the vessel was evaluated and proven by hydrodynamic tank testing and a 21.3 m (70 ft) scale prototype named the iLAN Voyager completed sea trials to demonstrate the advantages of the concept. The Adventurer is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communications equipment.

trimaran brigitte bardot

OCEAN 7 ADVENTURER In 2007 the vessel was acquired by Ocean 7, a Cape Town based marine brokerage and charter operation. The vessel was recommissioned and transferred to a mooring at the V&A Waterfront. The vessel was available for charter, film work and the occasional marine rescue operation. In December 2007 the Ocean 7 Adventurer was chartered to retrieve a demasted yacht, the IMOCA 60 Delta Dore from the Southern Ocean. The Delta Dore was partaking in the Barcelona World Race. The yacht skippered by Jérémie Beyou and Sidney Gavignet was at position 47°00 S 033° 25 E, nearly a thousand miles south east from South Africa , drifting slowly at between 1 and 2 kn (2 and 4 km/h) east. An hour after the mast had collapsed backwards, it had to be cut free and dumped into the ocean, as it was likely to damage the hull. The yacht had 188 l (41 imp gal) of diesel fuel on board, but this was insufficient to motor back to the mainland. The Ocean 7 team were approached with regard to salvaging the yacht. Skippered by co-owner David de Villiers, the Ocean 7 Adventurer set sail for the Southern Ocean and after locating the yacht, it was taken in tow with a 200 m (656 ft) line. This rescue set a record for the longest tow in South African maritime history (850 nmi (1,574 km)). During early June 2008 the Adventurer moved to the east coast of South Africa to observe the annual sardine run, after which it relocated to the southern end of Madagascar in July in search of waves amongst the reefs where the vessel was used as a live-aboard base for surfers and kite surfers. During September the Adventurer explored the Baron Islands off the Madagascar coast before returning to its base at the V&A Waterfront for the summer season, where it was available for day charters, specialized trips and functions.

trimaran brigitte bardot

RAT RACE MEDIA ADVENTURER In 2008 it was repainted in Rat Race Media graphics and was the star of a TV series on kykNET, Aqua X. The series started in October 2008 and aired until January 2009.

MILES FOR SMILES ADVENTURER In November 2009 the Ocean 7 Adventurer was chartered by the Cipla Miles for Smiles Foundation to be the support vessel during leg one of the Miles for Smiles Madagascar Challenge. Before setting out to sea the Ocean 7 Adventurer received a new look with the iconic Miles for Smiles regalia. This challenge was the brainchild of David Grier to raise awareness and funding for Operation Smile children suffering from facial deformity. Leg one of this challenge was to paddle some 550 km (342 mi) from Nacala Mozambique to Cap St Andre in Madagascar where leg two of the challenge took place - the traversing of Madagascar from South to North on foot. The Ocean 7 Adventurer played a crucial role in supporting David Grier and cameraman Nick Heygate during the paddle crossing.

GOJIRA The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) acquired the $4 million vessel for its 2010-11 campaign against Japanese whaling in the Antarctic Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary and renamed it MV Gojira (Romanized Japanese for Godzilla ). Captained by Lockhart "Locky" MacLean, it is the first Australian-flagged vessel to be operated by the Sea Shepherd Society, and though slower, it is twice as large as the Ady Gil, making it more stable than the boat it replaces.

Humpback whales and dolphin logo

BRIGITTE BARDOT In May 2011 the SSCS was served with a notice from the copyright holders of the Gojira/Godzilla franchise, regarding the unauthorized use of the trademark. The Society promptly changed the vessel's name to the Brigitte Bardot in honor of the French fashion model, actress, and singer whom Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd, took on an anti- sealing trip in 1977. In addition to a new name, the vessel also received a new paint scheme; the overall black scheme was replaced by a grey coloration similar to that of a naval vessel. The ship, now under the command of Captain Jonathan Renecle, was damaged by a rogue wave of 11 m (36.1 ft) while pursuing the Japanese whaling fleet off the western coast of Australia on 28 December 2011. The Brigitte Bardot was escorted back to Fremantle by the SSCS flagship, MY Steve Irwin. The main hull was cracked and the port side pontoon was being held together by straps. The vessel arrived at Fremantle Harbour on 5 January 2012. Both ships were followed by the ICR security vessel MV Shōnan Maru 2 at a distance of 5 nautical miles (9 km). The repair process, with a cost of over $250,000, involved placing the ship in a hermetically sealed chamber. Composite yacht experts from across the globe, including the ship's designer, were flown in to assess the damages and recommend a course of action. Sea Shepherd's 18 Australian chapters raised the money necessary to repair the vessel. Repairs to the MV Brigitte Bardot were completed and the ship set sail for sea trials on 16 April 2012. In September 2012, the Brigitte Bardot was expelled from Fiji by local naval and immigration officials. On 5 January 2013 in Timaru, New Zealand, a distress call was issued in relation to the Brigitte Bardot after an observer mistook the vessel for an overturned yacht. While several vessels nearby responded to the call, the Brigitte Bardot did not respond and instead turned away at high speed upon the arrival of a rescue helicopter. The South Canterbury Coastguard and Maritime New Zealand criticised Sea Shepherd over the incident, stating "There was no need for Sea Shepherd to behave like this". Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson said the first the organisation knew about the distress call was when the helicopter arrived. "We can't help it if someone else makes the call. Record-breaking “brigitte bardot” now for sale.

Going back to 1998, the 109-Foot racing yacht set a new Guinness World Record speeding around the world in a matter of 74 days, 20 hours and 58 minutes. With over 4,000 miles on a single tank, the Trimaran beauty has seen her fair share of the sea, sailing around the world already 6 times.

Not only serving a purpose of record-breaking, the Bardot was also a part of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) aiding in tracking down Japanese whaling ships in the Antarctic, Chinese squid boats off the Galapagos, and Bluefin poachers in the Mediterranean.

Now for sale through Fraser Yachts, the stunning, needle-nosed racing yacht was designed by British multihull guru Nigel Irens and originally named Cable & Wireless Adventurer. Built in 1997 by British yard Vosper Thornycroft for the sole purpose of circling the world in less than 80 days, the impressive mission was accomplished and later renamed Ocean 7 Adventurer.

“ Vessels  don ’ t come more unique than this, ”  Joaquin Genrich, listing broker with Fraser Yachts.  “ It could take a family completely off the grid. Throw off the lines and you could get from Puerto Vallarta, where she is right now, to Tahiti on one tank. ”

After a long and successful career ranging from a charter vessel to starring in a Hollywood film, the Brigitte Bardot has traveled to all four corners of the world; Australia, New Zealand, the Faroe Islands, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and even Key West, where she helped protect turtles from poachers.

“ These days Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is working more with governments and requiring larger vessels that can accommodate military personnel. Sadly, she ’ s become too small for our needs, ”  says Octavia Carranza, who captained  the yacht  on missions to Peru in 2018.   “ We ’ ll definitely be sorry to see her go. She ’ s a remarkable vessel.   What I always found amazing was sitting on the bridge and watching her slice through the water like a knife . ”

Recently re-powered with two new 500-horsepower Cummins QSC 8.3-liter turbo diesels, replacing the previous 350-horse versions, the top speed is now close to 30 knots. Genrich says the boat’s comparatively low $1.499 million asking price leaves plenty of room for a comprehensive refit.
