Jeff Bezos’ Giant Yacht Is Apparently Too Big to Anchor Near Others in Florida

The superyacht, called Koru, arrived in Port Everglades in Florida on Nov. 22, and has been docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State.

First, Jeff Bezos’ new megayacht was too big to pass under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now, the massive vessel’s size — it’s more than 400 feet long — has played a role in preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Fla., where it is anchored.

Instead, the megayacht, named Koru, is hanging with huge oil tankers and general container ships. The yacht is docked there because of its size and also because of what berths were available in the seaport, according to a spokeswoman for Port Everglades.

Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much bigger diesel-powered boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceanco , the Dutch company that finished building the boat earlier this year.

The deck space of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The inside has a “timeless, contemporary style,” according to Oceanco, with natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that appears to resemble Mr. Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Koru, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, arrived to the Florida port on Nov. 22 after departing from Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic , a real-time maritime data platform.

It was unclear why exactly Mr. Bezos docked his yacht there, but earlier this month he said that he would be moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Ms. Sánchez.

Mr. Bezos had since 1994 lived in Seattle , where he started Amazon from his garage. He has already purchased two mansions in South Florida, one for $68 million and another for $79 million, according to Bloomberg News .

Bloomberg estimated his net worth to be $171 billion.

Port Everglades charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Ships that have been closest to Koru include a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State .

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and has come to symbolize new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art.

Mr. Bezos’ journey with his new yacht started off rocky . Last year, city officials in Rotterdam, the Dutch city, initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so that Koru could pass through it from the nearby city where it had been built. The dismantling process would have taken more than a day, and putting it back together would have too. But after uproar from the community — including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it would have passed — Oceanco decided against it and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Coincidentally, on Tuesday, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed to NBC6 that the company is searching for 50,000 square feet of leased office space in the Miami area as part of its organic growth over the past few years in the region.

Amazon currently has more than 400 corporate and tech employees assigned to our existing serviced office locations in the Miami area, but this office space would first base location in the city.

In October, Bloomberg News reported that Bezos had purchased a mansion in the area known as “Billionaire Bunker” for $79 million, after buying a neighboring estate for $68 million.

Indian Creek Village is an island community off the coast of Miami. Nestled among the other barrier islands of Miami-Dade County, this ultra-private island is one of the wealthiest and most secure neighborhoods in the United States. Residents include celebrities and billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Tom Brady and Julio Iglesias.

So how much money would you need to live in Indian Creek Village? Read on for a full breakdown .

What Is Indian Creek Village Like?

Indian Creek Village is a man-made barrier island in Biscayne Bay, Florida, spanning 294 acres, often called the “Billionaire Bunker.” According to the local government website , the island has only 41 lots, all on the waterfront. In the island’s center lies Indian Creek Country Club, whose golf course was designed by prominent course architect William S. Flynn.

The only access to the island is through the Indian Creek Bridge, which connects it to the other Miami barrier islands. The bridge is guarded by the Indian Creek Village police force, and anyone not on the resident or guest list is turned away. In fact, the island is so exclusive that even the Indian Creek police station and village hall aren’t located on the island. Instead, they are relegated to a building on the other side of the bridge.

In June 2021, Indian Creek Village installed a new security system composed of perimeter security poles equipped with radar and camera technology. This system monitors the island’s perimeter, focusing on anyone in the water around the island, and sends real-time thermal video coverage to the local police. Other security systems include CCTV and a Solarbeam wireless setup that uses infrared barriers to detect motion. When these barriers are breached, an alarm is triggered.

There are no buildings or amenities on the island aside from the houses and the country club, so residents must venture outside for anything beyond those. However, that might not be an issue for people with enough wealth to own yachts and private jets.

Who Lives in Indian Creek?

Indian Creek Village is known for its high-profile list of residents. This includes individuals from various sectors such as business, entertainment and sports, who choose Indian Creek for its privacy and lifestyle.

Here are a few notable residents:

Jeff Bezos : The founder of Amazon and one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, Bezos owns multiple properties on the island, totaling over $230 million in value.

Tom Brady : The footballer and his then-wife, fashion model Gisele Bündchen, bought a lot in Indian Creek Village together. After their divorce, Brady retained the lot and the house he built on it, while Bündchen bought another property on the other side of the water.

Julio Iglesias : The renowned Spanish singer has long enjoyed the tranquility and security of Indian Creek, making it one of his homes since 1978. He bought a total of five parcels of land on the island, where he hoped to create a family compound. However, he said that his children had other plans, and he ended up listing four of the five lots for sale in 2017.

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump : The couple purchased a lot in Indian Creek in 2021. There were reports that they were rejected from joining Indian Creek Country Club due to objections from other members. However, they might not be unwelcome in the neighborhood — 42 of the 53 votes cast by residents of Indian Creek in the 2020 presidential election were for Ivanka’s father, Donald Trump.

Jaime Gilinski : The South American billionaire banker has reportedly purchased five neighboring properties on the island, from 18 to 22 Indian Creek Island Road.

David Guetta : The internationally acclaimed French DJ and music producer chose Indian Creek as his American home base, purchasing a luxurious property for $69 million in 2023.

Costs of Living in Indian Creek Village

The financial barrier to entry in Indian Creek Village is exceedingly high, making it accessible only to the wealthiest. Here’s a breakdown of the costs associated with living in this exclusive area.

Home Prices

Real estate prices in Indian Creek typically start at over $20 million — such as the $24 million home bought by Jared and Ivanka Trump, but some properties have sold for much more. David Guetta reportedly spent $69 million on his home, and Bezos recently bought his third house on the island for $90 million.

If you don’t have enough to buy in cash, you must factor interest payments into the equation. For a $30 million home, with a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and an APR of 6.85%, you would end up paying over $32 million in interest over the length of the loan. This means that you’d have to pay over $60 million in total, and your monthly mortgage payment would be just over $157,000.

Annual Costs

Owning a home in Indian Creek comes with hefty ongoing expenses. Property taxes alone often run into hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, depending on the assessed value of the property. One of Bezos’ properties, 12 Indian Creek Island Road, had a property tax bill of $710,736.01 in 2023. Fees for security and community maintenance add to the cost.

The cost of maintaining a property like those in Indian Creek can also be substantial. This includes landscaping vast gardens, upkeep of private docks and pools and general costs of maintaining large homes.

The unusual hobbies of Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and more

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The leaders of tech's biggest companies have some interesting hobbies.

Activities include gaming, working out, or — in Bill Gates' case — collecting luxury cars.

Here's how the industry's top players spend their time outside of work.

When they aren't running multi-billion-dollar companies, tech executives find time to pick up some varied hobbies.

While some, like Oracle CTO Larry Ellison , participate in expensive and unusual activities that match their ultra-high net worth, others spend their spare time in more typical ways, like hitting the gym or playing sports.

Despite having extremely demanding schedules, the leaders of some of the biggest corporations in the world still find ways to play almost as hard as they work.

Here are the hobbies of some of the biggest names in tech.

Tim Cook likes cycling and rock climbing.

Although Apple CEO Tim Cook is private about what he does outside work, he reportedly enjoys cycling and rock climbing.

The Wall Street Journal said in 2014 that Yosemite and Zion National Parks are among his favorite vacation destinations.

Mark Zuckerberg is into combat sports and playing his guitar.

In recent years, Mark Zuckerberg has been open about his love of mixed martial arts.

The Meta CEO appears to be both a spectator and a participant in combat sports. He's been spotted ringside at UFC fights and even sustained a serious injury while sparring in November.

A scroll through his Instagram will also reveal that Zuck is more than proficient at playing the acoustic guitar.

Jeff Bezos is dedicated to his fitness routine.

Jeff Bezos seems to have become increasingly fit over the years, and his dedication to working out probably has much to do with it.

Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sánchez told Vogue that the Amazon founder is a "monster in the gym." His personal trainer, Wes Okerson, has reportedly trained action star Tom Cruise.

Australian fitness publication Body and Soul reported that Bezos mostly does low-impact, high-resistance workouts like rowing and lifting weights.

Larry Ellison enjoys sailing.

Larry Ellison is all about water sports. He partly financed the Oracle Team USA sailing team, which won the 33rd America's Cup yacht race in 2010.

But he's more than just a sponsor. Oracle CTO Ellison has also participated in yacht racing himself since the 1990s.

"It's funny, because I realized after losing twice that my personality wouldn't allow me to quit while losing. And then after winning the America's Cup, I discovered my personality doesn't allow me to quit while winning! I don't smoke, but I do sail," he told CBS in 2013 when asked about his need to win the America's Cup.

He also enjoys a more sedate time on the water. Musashi , the 88-meter superyacht he's owned since 2011, includes an elevator, beauty salon, basketball court, and more.

Sergey Brin favors activities that give an adrenaline rush.

Sergey Brin became known for rollerblading around the Google campus during his time there.

Brin also likes to challenge himself with extreme activities like gymnastics, trapeze, and roller hockey. Stephanie Sammartino McPherson wrote in "Sergey Brin and Larry Page: Founders of Google" that he tried out for various sports teams while attending Stanford.

"I like to do a variety of acrobatic things," Brin has previously said.

Larry Page is interested in outdoorsy activities.

Unlike his fellow Google cofounder Brin, Larry Page is tight-lipped about how he spends his time since stepping back from leadership.

Page owns several private islands in the South Pacific and, if his organic farm is any indication, appears to have an interest in nature.

He's also been spotted kiteboarding in front of snow-capped mountains in Alaska.

Sundar Pichai is a soccer fan.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai is a dedicated fan of soccer club FC Barcelona.

Pichai visited the team in 2017 and got his very own customized Barcelona jersey. During his visit he took photos with the Ballon d'Or trophy and Lionel Messi — the player who's been given the award the most.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sundar Pichai (@sundarpichai)

Bill Gates collects cars.

In true billionaire fashion, Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates has a hobby that requires some serious funds.

Gates likes to collect luxury cars, with a particular soft spot for Porsches. His estate in Medina, Washington reportedly has a 20-car garage.

His first big purchase with his Microsoft money was a Porsche 911 supercar in 1979.

Elon Musk is a gamer.

Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk certainly spends some of his time interacting with other users on his social media platform.

But, outside that — and running multiple companies — Musk has been said to enjoy playing video games.

His ex-girlfriend Claire Boucher — better known as Grimes — told biographer Walter Isaacson that Musk stayed up all night playing the game "Elden Ring" when it first came out.

Satya Nadella is a big fan of cricket.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is a lifelong supporter of cricket.

Nadella is a co-owner of the Seattle Orcas — an American professional cricket team. During the 2023 Cricket World Cup, he spoke to the Times of India about his love of the game.

"As an Indian and a South Asian, I think it's more than a religion. For all of us, it's what we grew up with," he said during an interview.

Sam Altman likes racing cars and doomsday prepping.

Open AI CEO Sam Altman has a passion for going fast and preparing for the worst.

Altman told the New Yorker in 2016 that he owned five racing cars — including two McLarens and a Tesla. He also said he has a stash of "guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water," and gas masks in case of a nuclear war or artificial intelligence rising up against humans.

Jeff Bezos' megayacht was quietly towed from a Dutch shipyard after the company building it scrapped a request to dismantle a historic bridge to let it pass — watch the video

  • Bezos' yacht was moved from a Dutch shipyard before dawn Tuesday, likely to avoid local attention.
  • After public outcry from locals, it did not involve the dismantling of a historic bridge.
  • Watch Bezos' yacht make its journey.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos' megayacht has quietly left the Dutch shipyard where it was built, sans a bridge dismantling and crowds of spectators.

The 417-foot vessel , known as Y721 and estimated to cost $500 million, has been under construction by the shipbuilding company Oceanco in a shipyard in Alblasserdam, Netherlands. It was towed to the Greenport shipyard in Rotterdam in the wee hours of the morning Tuesday, according to the German magazine Der Spiegel .

The controversy surrounding Bezos' yacht began in February, when Oceanco requested the city of Rotterdam dismantle the Koningshaven Bridge to allow the vessel to pass through the city. Known colloquially as De Hef, the beloved bridge is considered something of a landmark by locals. It's nearly 100 years old. Upon completion, the yacht will have three masts too tall for the bridge's clearance, which is about 131 feet.

Related stories

Dutch residents were outraged and planned an event to throw eggs at Bezos' yacht if it required the bridge to be dismantled for its passage. Within days, Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said no decision had been made to dismantle the bridge and that Bezos or Oceanco might need to foot the bill if it happened.

Earlier this month, Oceanco withdrew its request for the dismantling after the public outcry.

Hanco Bol, a local yachting enthusiast from the yacht fan club Dutch Yachting, saw and recorded a video of Tuesday's relocation, which he posted on YouTube, Der Spiegel reported. He said preparations for the move started about 1 a.m. and the yacht departed at 3 a.m.

Bol speculated Oceanco "tried to keep the launch and transport under wraps" because the vessel took a route that was longer than necessary but avoided going through the city center and past the Koningshaven Bridge.

"We never saw a transport going that fast," he wrote in the caption of his YouTube video, adding that Bezos' yacht arrived at the Greenport shipyard three hours and 24 miles later.

On its voyage Tuesday morning, Bezos' yacht was towed without its masts, which will be installed later, Der Spiegel reported.

20 Years Helping You Live Richer

Reviewed by Experts

Trusted by Millions of Readers

Do you have tens of millions of dollars currently burning a hole in your pocket? If so, you may be able to live with celebrities and the ultra-wealthy in Florida’s most exclusive neighborhood.

  • Jeff Bezos : The founder of Amazon and one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, Bezos owns multiple properties on the island, totaling over $230 million in value.
  • Tom Brady : The footballer and his then-wife, fashion model Gisele Bündchen, bought a lot in Indian Creek Village together. After their divorce, Brady retained the lot and the house he built on it, while Bündchen bought another property on the other side of the water.
  • Julio Iglesias : The renowned Spanish singer has long enjoyed the tranquility and security of Indian Creek, making it one of his homes since 1978. He bought a total of five parcels of land on the island, where he hoped to create a family compound. However, he said that his children had other plans, and he ended up listing four of the five lots for sale in 2017.
  • Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump : The couple purchased a lot in Indian Creek in 2021.
  • Jaime Gilinski : The South American billionaire banker has reportedly purchased five neighboring properties on the island, from 18 to 22 Indian Creek Island Road.
  • David Guetta : The internationally acclaimed French DJ and music producer chose Indian Creek as his American home base, purchasing a luxurious property for $69 million in 2023.

Lauren Sánchez proudly showed off her massive 20-carat engagement ring while on a lavish trip in the South of France with fiancé Jeff Bezos.

The former news anchor and billionaire businessman were photographed Friday touring Beaulie, a seaside commune in the French Riviera.

The scenic town is the couple’s latest stop on their European getaway, as they’ve been sailing for weeks aboard Bezos’ $500 million yacht .

Sánchez could be seen in photos resting her left hand on a boat as her giant sparkler — worth an estimated $2.5 million — shone in the sunlight.

The ex-entertainment reporter was dressed in a beautiful orange dress, while Bezos also looked stylish in a fitted T-shirt and light jeans. They appeared smitten as they held hands.

Page Six exclusively reported in May that the Amazon CEO popped the question after five years of dating. The proposal came amid the couple’s trip to the Cannes Film Festival.

Bezos, 59, and Sánchez, 53, hit the star-studded party circuit immediately after getting engaged to celebrate.

An eyewitness previously told Page Six of the pair, “They were all over each other. I mean, they’re always affectionate, but they could not keep their hands off each other.”

Page Six exclusively revealed in January 2019 — shortly after Bezos announced his split from then-wife, MacKenzie Scott, via Twitter — that he had started dating Sánchez .

The former “Extra” and “Good Day LA” host, for her part, was previously married to Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell. They share a daughter, Ella, 15, and son, Evan, 16.

She also has a 22-year-old son, Nikko, with former NFL player Tony Gonzalez.

Bezos’ divorce from Scott, 53, was finalized in April 2019 , making the latter the third-richest woman in the world as a result. However, the philanthropist pledged half of her reported $38 billion fortune to charity.

Meanwhile, since going public, Sánchez and her beau have not been shy about professing their love for one another.

“Happy birthday to the man of my dreams, who lights up my world with his laughter and kind heart,” the media personality wrote on Instagram for her lover’s birthday this year.

“You have shown me that no great love is not bravely fought for. Thank you for always being by my side and for being the most loving and supportive partner.”

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Are Engaged

Amazon founder jeff bezos and journalist lauren sanchez are engaged four years after the couple first went public with their relationship..

Jeff Bezos   and  Lauren Sanchez  are in the prime of their relationship.

The Amazon founder is officially engaged to Lauren after about four years of dating , sources close to the couple confirm to E! News. The pair went public with their relationship in 2019, the same year Jeff announced his split with wife MacKenzie Scott .

On May 21, Jeff, 59, and Lauren, 53, were photographed on vacation together in the South of France, with her rocking a ring on that finger while aboard Jeff's yacht.

Four months ago, Lauren got candid on creating a blended family , as Jeff has three sons and one adopted daughter with MacKenzie. Meanwhile, the former Good Day L.A. co-host shares 16-year-old son Evan and 15-year-old daughter Ella with ex-husband Patrick Whitesell , along with son Nikko , 22, with ex Tony Gonzalez .

"On a typical Saturday, we hang out, we have dinner with the kids, which is always fun because you never know where the conversation is going to go with this many kids," she told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Jan. 25. "We are the Brady Bunch!"

However, when it comes to having a successful home life, the helicopter pilot credits communication with her ex-husband for a smooth ride.

"My greatest example is the relationship I have with my eldest son's father, Tony," Lauren continued. "Tony and his wife [ October "Tobie" Gonzalez ] are my best friends. Tony and Tobie were at Thanksgiving with us [this year]. I'm so proud of it. My son looks at me, and he's like, ‘I'm the luckiest boy in the world because I can have Thanksgiving with both my parents and they don't have to be married.'"

Lauren also touched on the relationship she has built with her now-fiancé, noting that in this case, being together is what truly makes the heart grow fonder.

"It's the greatest experience I've ever had," she shared of working close with him. "I've always had a career very separate from my partner. We love to be together and we love to work together. He's helping me with the book. He's getting his pilot's license. We fly together. We work out together. We're together all the time."

Back in 2019, Jeff and MacKenzie announced that they were going their separate ways  after 25 years of marriage. Hours after the news broke, multiple outlets reported that the billionaire had allegedly been secretly dating Lauren .

Since splitting from their respective spouses, Jeff has detailed what he loves most about his other half.

"Lauren is the most generous, most big-hearted person that you would ever meet," he gushed to CNN  in November. "She is an inspiration in that way at every level. She is generous with somebody she just meets, she's generous with every person and she's generous in the large too."
