Short Answer

A yacht club, also known as a sailing club, is an organization of people who own or use sailboats or motorboats for recreational sailing and other activities.

Yacht clubs typically provide a clubhouse, slip, launching ramp, and moorings for their members, as well as other amenities such as a restaurant, bar, and swimming pool.

Many yacht clubs also organize races and other sailing events for their members.

What is a Yacht Club?

A yacht club is an organization of recreational sailors and boat owners who come together to enjoy their mutual love of sailing and boating.

Members of yacht clubs typically enjoy a variety of activities such as racing, cruising, and social events.

Yacht clubs also usually provide their members with docks, moorings, and other facilities, as well as access to sailing classes and recreational activities.

Yacht clubs are a great place for members to learn more about sailing, as well as to meet other sailing enthusiasts.

Yacht clubs have existed for centuries, with some of the oldest yacht clubs in the world dating back to the 18th century.

Today, yacht clubs are found in most parts of the world, from large cities to small towns.

Yacht clubs vary in size and scope, with some clubs focusing on a specific type of sailing, such as racing or cruising, while others focus on a variety of activities.

Yacht clubs typically have a membership structure, with members paying annual dues in order to access the club’s facilities and activities.

In addition, many yacht clubs also have a range of benefits and privileges, such as discounts on sailing classes, membership in other clubs, and special events.

Yacht clubs are an important part of the sailing and boating community.

They provide a safe and secure environment for members to enjoy sailing, as well as a place to meet and network with other boaters.

Yacht clubs are also often involved in charity and community work, helping to promote the sport of sailing and boating.

Benefits of Joining a Yacht Club

From competitive racing to leisurely cruises, yacht clubs offer members a wide range of activities and experiences, many of which are not available to the non-member public.

The most obvious benefit of joining a yacht club is access to a range of facilities and amenities, such as docks, moorings, and other resources.

Yacht clubs can also provide their members with access to sailing classes, safety courses, and other recreational activities, such as fishing and water sports.

Many yacht clubs also host social events, such as potlucks, barbecues, and parties, which help create a strong sense of community among members.

Yacht clubs are also a great way to meet other sailing enthusiasts and form lasting friendships.

Types of Yacht Clubs

Yacht clubs come in all shapes and sizes.

They range from large, prestigious clubs with an international membership to small, local clubs with a handful of members.

Some clubs specialize in racing, while others are more focused on cruising or social events.

Here are the three main types of yacht clubs: 1.

Racing Yacht Clubs: These clubs are focused on competitive sailing and racing.

They generally have a strong emphasis on performance and use of advanced technology.

They host competitive events such as regattas and provide training and instruction in competitive sailing.

Cruising Yacht Clubs: These clubs are focused on recreational cruising.

They often provide facilities for members to store their boats, and organize social activities such as cruises and potluck dinners.

Social Yacht Clubs: These clubs are focused more on social activities than sailing.

They may organize events such as dinner cruises, live music, or fishing tournaments.

They also host a variety of classes and lectures on topics such as sailing safety, navigation, and boat maintenance.

No matter what type of yacht club you join, you can be sure to meet other sailing enthusiasts and learn more about sailing and boating.

Yacht clubs provide a great atmosphere for networking, learning, and having fun.

Membership Requirements and Costs

Joining a yacht club can be a great way to get involved in the sailing and boating community, but it is important to understand the requirements and costs associated with membership.

Generally, yacht clubs require prospective members to fill out an application and pay a membership fee.

This fee may vary depending on the specific club and its amenities, but it is typically not very expensive.

Depending on the club, additional fees may also be required for access to certain activities and facilities.

In addition to the membership fee, many yacht clubs also require prospective members to pass a sailing proficiency test or interview.

This ensures that all members have the necessary skills and safety awareness to safely navigate the waters.

Yacht clubs may also have requirements for the types of boats that are allowed, such as requiring that all vessels be of a certain size or age.

Some clubs may also require members to have a certain amount of sailing experience.

Most yacht clubs also require members to maintain a certain level of participation in order to keep their membership active.

This can include attending club meetings, participating in races and other activities, and volunteering.

Additionally, many yacht clubs have a dress code that must be followed while at the club.

Yacht clubs are a great way to get involved in the sailing and boating community, but it is important to understand the requirements and costs associated with membership before joining.

By doing so, prospective members can ensure that they are joining a club that is right for them and that they are prepared to meet the requirements of membership.

Yacht clubs offer a variety of activities to their members.

The most popular is sailing, which can include racing, cruising, and recreational sailing.

From club-sponsored dinners and parties to organized regattas and races, there is something for everyone at a yacht club.

These events provide the perfect opportunity to meet fellow sailors and engage in friendly competition.

In addition to sailing and social activities, many yacht clubs provide a variety of services to their members.

Many clubs offer members access to docks and moorings, as well as storage for their boats.

Some clubs also provide fuel and supplies for members, allowing them to stock up before setting sail.

Finally, many yacht clubs offer a variety of recreational activities for their members, such as swimming pools, fitness centers, and tennis courts.

For those looking for a more in-depth experience, many yacht clubs also offer sailing trips, organized cruises, and sailing competitions.

These trips allow members to explore new places, learn more about sailing, and gain valuable experience.

  Welcome to the

Capital city yacht club  .

CCYC is Sacramento's enthusiastic club of fun-loving recreational boaters.  We're glad you stopped by and hope you spend a moment to check out our web-site. CCYC 's primary mission is FUN.  A dramatic departure from the formalities and rituals of a traditional yacht club, CCYC is dedicated to the satisfaction of its members' spirit of fun and enjoyment on the water.  So no matter if you're a salty old veteran or a newcomer to boating, we welcome you to catch a glimpse of the fun that's had on the rivers and sloughs of Sacramento as a member of CCYC .  If you like what you see, inquire about becoming a member by visiting the membership section and visit  our Facebook page   !!

Originally founded in 1993 under the name Walnut Grove-Capital City Yacht Club. Shortly after that, it became officially just “Capital City Yacht Club,” Capital City Yacht Club (CCYC) is now 100+ members strong and growing at a fast pace.  As of 1996 CCYC has been accepted into the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA), an association of reciprocal yachting clubs. CCYC was the first club accepted into PICYA in the second century of that organization. Based out of Sacramento Marina, CCYC is a organized as non-profit corporation with the traditional array of Officers and Directors.

While CCYC does not maintain an official club house facility, the club is based out of Sacramento Marina, which is also referred to as Miller Park.  On any given summer weekend you can find a good number of members at "Potluck Beach" which is located on the American River about 1 mile upstream from Discovery Park (where the Sacramento and American rivers meet).  Look for boats flying the CCYC burgee, most of which will be rafted-up in the river near Potluck Beach  or be stern-ended into Potluck Beach.  Make sure you stop by and say "HI".

MSC Seashore

I tried a ship-within-a-ship cruise experience and it was worth it for the endless perks—here’s why

The MSC Yacht Club affords travelers a totally different cruising experience, but you’ll have to splurge.

Erica Lamberg

I heard tales of luxury from people about the ritzy MSC Yacht Club , the ship-within-a-ship concept where discerning passengers enjoy their own area of the cruise ship that includes a dedicated restaurant, private lounge, separate pool and sundeck as well as private butlers and concierges to take of any whim while cruising. The elevated Yacht Club boasts priority everything while sailing MSC.

I sailed on a four-night cruise on the new MSC Seashore, a glitzy ship with Italian flair intermingled with references to New York City at every turn. Although the ship was well-appointed and had amazing dining, drinking and entertainment venues, and a bountiful Top Sail main buffet, thousands of passengers made the ship feel crowded at times, elevators were slow, and as I strolled through the general pools, they were boisterous and crowded.

RECOMMENDED: 10 things about cruising on an adults-only ship that might surprise you

Switch gears to MSC Seashore’s Yacht Club, passkey-protected for lucky guests, and is a 180 from the ship’s general spaces. Once you scan your handy Yacht Club wrist badge, or your room key, you’re instantly given entrance to a breathtaking retreat of 131 staterooms and suites. All this luxury does come at a price. Cruise fares will vary based on destination, time of year, and cabin category, but generally speaking you can expect to pay double for the Yacht Club. And from my experience, it’s worth it. Read more about why you should splurge.

You’re fast-tracked through everything

The Yacht Club’s exclusivity and impeccable service standard started from the moment I got dropped off at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. There were hundreds of people waiting to board at 1pm on embarkation day. I saw in the distance a canopy that said MSC Yacht Club. My husband and I wheeled our carry-on luggage to the representative under the canopy. I gave her my name and within two seconds, she gave me a sticker to wear and up we ascended on the escalator to check in. Just five minutes later, I was directed to the dedicated check-in area for Yacht Club guests. To my right, I saw about 1,000 people serpentine through ropes to do general check-in. I felt a sense of relief; who wants to wait in that line? Five minutes later, a butler from the Yacht Club insisted on wheeling my luggage to board the ship and I was in my room in a total on 12 minutes from the time I stepped foot out of the car to my stateroom in the Yacht Club.

Relaxing and streamlined

In addition, Yacht Club guests have the freedom to get off the ship first for excursions. Your butler will happily escort you off the ship with a smile. Guests also can disembark on the last morning first, which is a big convenience. Your butler walks you right to the place you disembark, bypassing crowds and hassles. Port Canaveral is about an hour away from Orlando International Airport, and we took a 10 am flight home. We didn’t have to linger around until the afternoon for our flight home.

Another perk is that there’s a special seating area in the theater for shows. All the shows were excellent during my voyage. All other ship passengers have to make reservations in advance for shows but that’s not the case for the privileged Yacht Club passengers. As long as you arrive about 10 minutes before any show you choose, a crew member from the Club will allow you entry into a special roped-off section. Again, no rushing through dinner—you have the flexibility to plan your evenings your way.

MSC Seashore

Your Yacht Club package is packed with remarkable value

The price tag may sound daunting, but there’s lots of value there. All Yacht Club cabins and suites include a premium drink package that covers beverages up to $15. You can use this perk both in the Yacht Club and throughout the ship. In addition, your package includes a two-device Wi-Fi package, which worked well during my sailing. Finally, you get access to the thermal spa suite, which is a place to indulge after a day in port or a sea day. Commonly, there’s a taboo regarding mini-bars, but not in the Yacht Club. It’s stocked each day with the beverages you want; just tell your butler and consider it done.

You get perks ashore too

If your sailing includes a call to Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, Yacht Club guests get an elevated experience there too. Yacht Club guests enjoy a private area, and a dedicated restaurant called the Ocean House. While other ship guests were hosted to a buffet of predictable fare, I enjoyed a lobster roll, and my husband chose carne asada. In my opinion, one thing that could be improved was the tram service to the Yacht Club’s private area. We were told the last tram back was 3:30pm if we didn’t want to trek a 15-minute walk in the heat. Since we were docked in Ocean Cay for the evening and weren’t sailing, I was a bit dismayed by this logistical quirk. I felt like I was keeping an eye on my phone to make sure I didn’t miss the last tram.

You have private areas with curated food and drink and outdoor spaces

Within the Yacht Club complex, there’s the Yacht Club Restaurant, Top Sail Lounge and the One Pool Buffet, which are all exclusive to Yacht Club guests. Obviously, the food and service are steps above other dining venues of the ship, I can vouch for that. Although the food is delicious, if you don’t want to pay extra to dine at the specialty restaurants or fuss in the main buffet, eating three meals a day in the Yacht Club restaurant can get a bit monotonous. The breakfast is the same daily, and lunch and dinner offer a menu with daily specials plus a few standby selections like a hamburger or pasta each day. Although the Yacht Club Restaurant concept is desirable, I would strongly suggest dining in other venues on board, especially for dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed specialty dining in Ocean Cay Restaurant, Butcher’s Cut, and Kaito Teppanyaki. I also want to mention that late afternoon high tea is offered daily at the Yacht Club Restaurant. It was one of the nicest I have experienced at sea.

MSC Seashore

Also available exclusively to Yacht Club passengers is the Top Sail Lounge, which offers panoramic water views and has chef-curated selections from morning through late night. We enjoyed popping into the lounge at all hours to try finger foods and sweets. The One Pool Buffet offers a more casual option for breakfast and lunch by the pool. The buffet has grilled fish, sandwiches and lots of delicious options if you want to dine outside.

There’s also an exclusive area with a private pool and two whirlpools for Yacht Club guests only. The sun deck loungers are very comfortable and I never had to worry about finding a lounger, there are ample. One issue I had was that there was almost no shade on the sun deck; there were shaded day beds for Royal Suite and Owners Suite guests, but beyond those, I couldn’t find any shade, which was disappointing.

You can justify the price at the end of your cruise

Overall, the best way to explain my enthusiasm for my MSC Yacht Club experience is this: it’s better to book an interior stateroom in the Yacht Club than a luxe cabin outside the Yacht Club. It’s worth the splurge and you return home feeling truly pampered and it’s money well-spent. And I make this prediction: Once you try a ship-within-a-ship concept like the MSC Yacht Club, you won’t want cruise any other way. Bon Voyage!

Members of Pelican Isle Yacht Club (PIYC) and their guests came together for a Boat Christening Day at PIYC’s marina in Naples, Fla. The event, which featured a poolside brunch and a ceremonial christening, was a testament to the club’s vibrant maritime community and marked a significant milestone following the challenges posed by Hurricane Ian.

Club + Resort Business previously shared stories about fleet review events in 2024 and 2022.

C+RB also earlier shared a story about a boating safety course offered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Eight member vessels were christened by the esteemed Past Commodores of PIYC, who are all distinguished members of the International Order of the Blue Gavel. The occasion was further elevated by the unveiling of newly restored sections of the marina, symbolizing progress, and resilience in the face of adversity. For PIYC members, it was a day filled with camaraderie and anticipation as they celebrated the reopening of their beloved 190-boat slip marina.

A Boat Christening ceremony holds special significance, regardless of the size or type of vessel. It serves as a joyful initiation into a world of nautical adventures, fostering a sense of community and ensuring safe passages for a lifetime of seafaring pursuits. At PIYC, this tradition embodies the spirit of fellowship and reverence for the ocean that unites its members.

As the sun danced upon the tranquil waters of the Cocohatchee River at Wiggins Pass, PIYC members rejoiced in the resumption of cherished traditions and the promise of new voyages ahead. With hearts full of gratitude and sails set for the horizon, they eagerly embrace the boundless opportunities that await them on the shimmering seas.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS THINK

Dave Shields and Dave Whitcraft helped us sell our express cruiser in the off season. They were knowledgeable and professional which helped the process during a difficult season go as smoothly as possible. Definitely 5-star service and we plan to use them again to find our next boat

- Caphill Royals

Ocean Club Yacht Sales handled my recent purchase with extreme care and focus. They are very knowledgeable brokers and went above and beyond the call to ensure that my buying experience was both pleasant and seamless. They have continued to be a resource, post-closing. Would definitely work with Dave and Susan in the future.

From the moment the return call came, we felt like there was someone on our side, vs someone trying to sell us something. David said "any" time we wanted was the time he was available. 2 hours later on a Sunday afternoon, we were sitting on the boat we thought would do. 2 hours after that we sitting on its "bigger brother" of which we are now the new owners. Total gentleman, pressure free and the more I asked about, the more he was excited to tell. Four hours in a row, into the dark and it never once felt like I was talking to anyone other than a superbly knowledgeable friend. Kudos David! If you need a boat.....you need a David. OCYS is our new home for this and the inevitable next.

‘Pretty dangerous’: Yacht captain lends insights on area where teen killed in boat crash

He also says boat towing ella adler, 15, is ‘not ideal’ for wakeboarding.

Christina Vazquez , Reporter

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – A Key Biscayne yacht captain is sharing insight into the area where 15-year-old Ella Adler lost her life over the weekend.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report said she was wakeboarding with someone else when she fell into the water near the Nixon Beach Sandbar and was struck and killed by the passing boater, who never stopped to help.

“She had the wakeboard on, she had fallen off from being towed, and she was just in the water waiting to be recovered by her vessel,” FWC Officer George Reynaud told “Good Morning America” Wednesday. “She was in the water, with her life jacket on, with her wakeboard attached at the time of the impact.”

Reynaud said, “Nixon Beach does have a sandbar where boats go to congregate, however, they were outside of that area.”

The report, released Wednesday, identified the operator as Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables.

Yacht captain Griffen Diaz spoke to Local 10 News on Wednesday. He said he was anchored at Nixon Beach, about a mile north of the crash, when it happened at around 4 p.m. Saturday.

“My heart goes out to this girl’s family and everyone who was involved,” Diaz said. “I have been really heartbroken about this story.”

Diaz said the water was choppy that day.

“The wind and the waves were coming out of the west which is very unusual for Biscayne Bay, it is a rare wind occurrence and it makes the bay a lot choppier,” he said.

WATCH 4PM STORY:

The yacht captain told Local 10 News the channel is known to be treacherous.

“It is pretty dangerous there to water ski because of the heavy traffic; I would never recommend it,” Diaz said, later adding, “The last thing someone would expect is to find (someone) waterskiing in the water in that heavy traffic area.”

Instead, he said, “If someone were to want to waterski or go tubing or any kind of water sports there’s an area right in front of Brickell, right in front of the apartment buildings in Brickell, actually just North of the Rickenbacker Causeway bridge and that is a safe area because it is away from a channel and it is a safe place to waterski.”

We’re also learning more about the boat towing Adler: a 42-foot Fjord.

“Which is not the ideal boat you want to be waterskiing on or pulling somebody with,” Diaz said. “The ideal waterskiing boat has one single engine and can turn on a dime and pick you right back up.”

Regarding the crash, he said, “If she let go of the rope or fell, and the captain did not notice, that would be negligent on his behalf because your eyes are locked on the person in tow and that is usually the rule we follow.”

Diaz said it’s possible that Alonso, who authorities said is cooperating with investigators, didn’t know he even hit Adler.

“The last thing someone would expect is to find a waterskier in the water in that heavy traffic area,” he said. “It was a four-engine boat, they could have been going at a high rate of speed (and) by the time they got close they didn’t even see her in the water.”

It’s not clear whether Alonso will be charged.

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

  • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
  • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
  • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

Insider Today

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

club yacht boat

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

club yacht boat

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

club yacht boat

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

club yacht boat

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

club yacht boat

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

club yacht boat

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

club yacht boat

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

club yacht boat

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

club yacht boat

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Sindhu Sundar contributed to an earlier version of this story.

Correction: May 6, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated Giovanna Vitelli's title. She is the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, not a vice president.

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.
