Itinerary Puerto Rico
After awaking and having a nice breakfast, you may want to take one last snorkel on Pyramid Reef before heading off due east to Culebra and Cayo Luis Peña. The sail is about 13 NM and you’ll find your anchorage/moorings on the southwest side of the Island. This anchorage is a sea turtle sanctuary, and features a great snorkeling reef and white sand beach. It’s perfectly fine to stay overnight here, but you may want to continue a couple of miles eastward to Playa Melones on Culebra. Here you’ll find some moorings right off a nice beach with great snorkeling. The advantage of Melones is that you are only a short dinghy ride from the town of Dewey, the capitol of Culebra, where the ferries arrive. Dewey features many small shops and some very interesting restaurants and cafés. Make dinner plans for the Island’s favorite spot, Mamacita’s. This quaint island spot can be reached by dinghy, midway up the channel that cuts through the island. Mamacita’s also offers a live music on the weekends, and impromptu gatherings of local musicians can happen any day of the week.
On day three, set your course to sail on the south side of Culebra, stopping for a snorkel in Carlos Rosario, Tamarindo or Melones. Here you’ll find plenty of free moorings and excellent snorkeling. Afterwards, sail eastwards to Bahia Tortuga on Culebrita Island, acclaimed as one of the top ten Caribbean beaches, not bad considering how many beaches there are in the Caribbean! You’ll want to spend some time here exploring the island. In addition to the picture perfect gin clear water and white sand beach, Culebrita features a historic lighthouse, which you can hike up to. In addition, don’t miss the Jacuzzis or “pozitas” as named in Spanish, natural tide pools along the north side of the island.
After time in Culebrita, take a nice downwind sail to the southern channel to Ensenada Honda, Dulebra’s main harbor. After setting anchor just behind Cayo Pirata, you can dinghy ashore and tie up at the Dinghy Dock Restaurant. Enjoy a late breakfast or early lunch while taking in the view of Ensenada Honda. The Dinghy Dock is a great spot to leave your tender while exploring the rustic town of Dewey. You can do some shopping and replenish provisions or you can even rent a scooter or jeep and explore the Island. You can opt to stay put here for the evening and have dinner at Sally’s, another nice spot, or sail down the bay of Ensenada Honda to the anchorage of Dakiti. Dakiti features many moorings in a calm reef-bound harbor. Just around the bend from the anchorage of Dakiti is Bahia Fulladoza, where you’ll find Club Seaborne, a boutique hotel with one of the finest restaurants on the island, and the Bahia Bay Resort, perfect for drinks and an amazing view. Another great mooring option for the night is Bahia Aldomovar, just outside and to the east of Ensenada Honda. Bahia Aldomovar is a calm mangrove harbor with a coral reef barrier and faces east towards St. Thomas.
On day five you’ll set sail southbound towards the island of Vieques. Enjoy a nice beam reach as you sail towards to the eastern tip of the Island. After rounding the eastern tip , you’ll sail along downwind to Bahia de la Chiva. This remote anchorage spot is unique in its exclusivity as it’s relatively inaccessible without a boat. You’ll enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Bahia Chiva, which features a large horseshoe shaped harbor with an island, Isla Chiva, in the middle of the bay. There’s a long white sand beach to explore and two great snorkeling spots: “Blue Tang” reef and Isla Chiva.
After breakfast and possibly a morning snorkel or hike, cast the mooring line loose and sail leisurely down the undeveloped south coast of Vieques to Sun Bay. Cruise in and find an anchorage on the eastern side of the bay and enjoy some nice snorkeling or a long walk on the beach. Sun Bay is just around the bend from Puerto Real, where the lively town of Esperanza is. Esperanza features its “Malecón” or in English, “waterfront walk”. Here you’ll find quaint little shops and several nice dining establishments along the strip. Lazy Jacks is fun for drinks and bar food. Duffy’s is great for lunch or dinner but if you want a real gastronomic treat, try Bili or El Quenepo, all located along the Malecón strip.
On day seven you’ll continue sailing eastward to Punta Arenas, located on the western coast of Vieques. Here you’ll find lots of coastline where you can drop anchor. In the northwest tip and running down the southwest side of Vieques, you find Green Beach, a beautiful great snorkel location with many turtles. Punta Arenas is a great place to watch the sun set over the Caribbean horizon and if you choose to stay here overnight, it’s only a 2.5 hr. sail back to the SailCaribe base at Marina Puerto del Rey. You can opt to sail back up the east coast of Puerto Rico to Cayo Icacos, just east of the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico. Cayo Icacos has a spectacular white sand beach island with a couple of great snorkeling spots and is only 5NM away from the SailCaribe base. Once back at the base, after re-fueling and de-briefing, you’ll be free to go and explore the multitude of treasures that the big island of Puerto Rico has to offer.
Arrive at Marina Puerto del Rey at 9:30a.m. to board the vessel by 10:00a.m. After accommodating personal belongings and provisions, you’ll begin the technical and chart briefings. This takes about 2-3 hours and once completed you’ll be ready to set sail. You’ll sail about 4 nautical miles to the northeast from Marina Puerto del Rey to Isla Palomino. Here you’ll find a nice harbor with plenty of free moorings maintained by the Department of Natural Resources of Puerto Rico. In the middle of the mooring field is Pyramid Reef, which is at swimming distance from the boat and features a variety of marine life. Other options while moored-off Isla Palomino are visiting the island restaurant and Tiki Bar operated by El Conquistador Resort. You may also like to take a dinghy ride to Cayo Palominito, which looks like a postcard perfect island oasis with its clear turqious waters and white sparkling sand.

"Another Amazing Week With VCY"

331 Crewed Luxury Yachts for Charter in the Virgin Islands
Virgin Islands Yacht Charters
The British Virgin Islands (BVIs) and the U.S. Virgin Islands yacht charters are widely considered to be two of the world's finest cruising destinations. Having long attracted discerning travellers, the waters which surround the picturesque island chains boast outstanding views and enjoy a year-round warmth. Virgin Island yacht charters are particularly popular during the winter charter season, a stunning selection of mega yachts can regularly be seen cruising around this world-famous Caribbean island paradise.
British Virgin Islands luxury yacht charters
Commonly referred to as ‘the BVIs’, British Virgin Island yacht rental vacations are popular for sailing yacht charters. Indeed, with steady trade winds, calm waters, and bright blue skies, there a few places better to unfurl a sail and enjoy the experience of being carried along by nature. As well as being a paradise for the intrepid sailor, the BVIs are also a perfect destination to explore from the comfort of a motor yacht . The vast array of untouched bays and dive sites, for example, are all easily accessible to motor yachts no matter how large they may be. Typically, those visiting the area on board a yacht will also make time to enjoy the mainland attractions found on Tortola. The largest of the British Virgin Islands, this destination boasts a remarkable selection of restaurants, bars, and boutique stores. Equally popular amongst the SuperyachtSet, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke are home to well-equipped harbours and suitably positioned anchorages.
US Virgin Islands luxury yacht charters
Lined with white sand beaches which look out across cobalt blue waters, renting a yacht in the US Virgin Islands is simply bliss. Just as revered as their British neighbours, the major islands here include St Croix, St Thomas , and St John. Usually, superyacht charters in the U.S. Virgin Islands will begin and end at St Thomas as the main port is located here. The capital of the islands, Charlotte Amalie, is also located on St Thomas and is home to a range of outstanding bars and restaurants. With numerous historic towns, national parks, and romantic retreats found around the surrounding islands, there’s plenty to see and do in this part of the world. Ideal for families as well as groups of friends, a charter vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands can be styled to meet the needs of any party configuration.
Yacht charter itineraries in the Virgin Islands
A yacht charter itinerary in the Virgin Islands can combine both the US and British Virgin Island. The pristine beauty of St. John is a popular starting point for charters here, and will include stunning hotspots like Norman Island, Tortola, Peter's Island, Virgin Gorda and North Sound.
Planning your luxury yacht charter in the Virgin Islands
When planning a private yacht charter vacation in either the BVIs or the U.S Virgin Islands, consider what kind of activities you’ll be keen to try out. Sail the US Virgin Islands
- Location Guide
Gateway to the Caribbean's Best Sailboat Destinations
The Virgin islands of the United States, as they are officially called, are a Caribbean territory of the USA that's a top sailing destination in itself, particularly around the two northern islands of St Thomas and St John. Furthermore, the US Virgin Islands as they are more commonly known provide convenient access for US citizens, and people travelling to the Caribbean through US airports, to a wide range of other exotic tropical islands with highly-developed sailing charter services. In other words, one of the very best places to begin your Caribbean sailing holiday adventure.
There's much to see and do on a sailing charter around St Thomas and St John. A little distant to the south is the largest island in the group, St. Croix, less visited and a half-day sail away. The most popular course out of St Thomas's Compass Point marina will take you east to St John and the fabulous Virgin Islands National Park, then beyond to the British Virgin Islands. It's just 22 nautical miles sailing from St Thomas to the eastern end of Tortola. But you won't want to do it in one day. there's far too much to experience along the way!
There are numerous options for getting to the USVI and chartering a sail or power boat. Our Caribbean sailing experts are here to help you on your way.
Discovering the US Virgin Islands by Sailboat
Fly into Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and it's a short drive east across the island to Compass Point marina. Pass through Charlotte Amalie and stop awhile to see the capital and main port. Or save that for later as part of your sailing itinerary and use it as a base for exploring the western half of St Thomas. Use American Yacht Harbor at Red Hook at the eastern end for more discovery around the island's marine reserve waters and idyllic Great St James island. Then sail east to nearby St John and its National Park.
The Virgin Islands National Park covers more than half of St John's land area. The island is home to just over 4,000 people, compared to St Thomas's 52,000, so it's a place of peace and tranquility with plenty of anchorage space for everyone to spread out and enjoy it. Cruz Bay is the main port of entry and very busy with ferry traffic, while Coral Bay at the eastern end is a big harbor popular with cruisers. In between a number of bays both north and south at the heart of the national park have buoys for overnight stays.
Take time out to explore the national park, for an appreciation not only of the natural environment but also the history and cultural remnants of these islands, once the Danish West Indies. That explains many of the place names you will encounter.
If sailing south to St Croix, head for Christiansted and use that as a base for exploring the island, which is also packed with a quite fascinating history. It's more likely that your next ports of call will be in the stunning locations that are the British Virgin islands , where you can be with a couple of hours' sailing.
With the US Virgin Islands being popular for cross-border charters, it's important to know your documentation requirements before you travel. Non-US visitors require a visa or visa waiver to enter the US Virgin islands. British Virgin islands authorities require a valid passport for short holiday stays. Charters to the Spanish Virgin Islands are normally done out of Fajardo in Puerto Rico . Before travelling west from USVI, check requirements and any restrictions on charters in that direction.
There may also be restrictions on sailing to St. Croix, depending on experience.

St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands is considered the sailing capital of the Caribbean. The beautiful waters, ideal wind conditions, and favorable temperatures make it perfect for both novice and experienced sailors alike. If this is your first sailing vacation, choose the U.S. Virgin Islands for an unforgettable experience as you navigate the waters by sailing boat or catamaran.
12 Knots offers both bareboat and crewed yacht charters for anyone interested in visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands. We offer two types of boat rentals with the option to either skipper your own sailboat or have one of our crews take care of the heavy lifting. 12 Knots takes care of every detail of your trip to ensure your sailing vacation is truly relaxing.
Things To Do In The U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands have a variety of activities both in the uninhabited islets and cays, as well as on the largest islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, and Water Island. The archipelago was settled by Europeans from several counties, making the culture of the U.S. Virgin Islands an exciting blend from around the world. The U.S. Virgin Islands offers plenty of shopping, seafood, and wildlife adventure to enjoy during your stay.
St. John has a beautiful national park that is perfect for hiking and taking a relaxing swim on the shore of Trunk Bay. Many consider Trunk Bay to be the most beautiful of all beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is a must-see whether you sail to it or begin your trip on St. John.
For a glimpse of history, you may drop an anchor at St. Croix and visit the Estate Whim Plantation Museum. This restored plantation house rests on 12 acres of picturesque hills and shows what Caribbean life was like during colonial days. St. Croix also sits on a large coral reef, perfect for a day mooring and half-day of snorkeling.
If rent a yacht in St. Thomas it will also offer you some of the best duty-free shopping selections in all of the Caribbean. Whether you’re looking for local boutiques or designer clothing and electronics, St. Thomas is the place to go for most of your shopping. As you walk along Main Street, you’ll find everything you need.
Sailing conditions in the US Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands are known worldwide for their ideal sailing conditions. The northeastern trade winds are strong in the wintertime, but otherwise you can expect calm waters, warm temperatures, and an overall pleasant sailing experience. The weather is warm year-round with an average temperature between 75ºF and 82ºF.
The seas range from three to four feet throughout the year, and wind speeds average from 10 to 25 knots throughout the year. The Christmas winds reach the highest speeds and allow an experienced skipper to sail for several days back to back. However, if you are a novice sailor, springtime will provide easier sailing conditions.
Best time for sailing vacation
Typically the winter and early spring months are the best times to sail in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The trade winds are strongest in December, January, February and the beginning of March. The weather is nice and cool, but can be a bit chilly for swimming. If you want to venture into the Virgin Islands on a bareboat charter, this is the best time to go.
However, if you are a novice sailor or interested in a crewed yacht charter, the spring and early fall months can be a good alternative. The winds are typically less strong in the summer and June to August are the best months for swimming since the water temperature rises significantly. This period also offers best prices for yacht charters however you should be aware of possible weather changes as this is a beginning of the hurricane season that usually runs from August to October.
The fall offers wind speeds of 10-15 knots on average which can be perfect for beginners to navigate the seas by sailing boat or catamaran. However, this is when the hurricane season is strongest, so be careful about when you plan your sailing trip. Fall can be ideal for crewed yacht charters in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
If you consider yacht charter for Christmas or New Year we strongly recommend to make all arrangements and bookings far in advance. The number of charter boats in US Virgin Islands is quite limited and usually prices second half of December significantly go up. But if you make boat reservation 6 or more months in advance you may get good early booking discount.
Difficulty level
Sailing the U.S. Virgin Islands is ideal for beginners and experienced skippers alike. Depending on the season you can experience relaxed sailing or more challenging conditions. The U.S. Virgin Islands offers a variety of calm bays, short passages between the islands, strong trade winds, and vast expanses of water to tailor your experience to your skill level.
Line of sight navigation, moderate waves and consistent trade winds, will make novice sailors feel most comfortable in the U.S. Virgin Islands as opposed to other Caribbean areas. Most of the major islands are close together, so you won’t have to sail for more than a few hours between them.
Main charter bases
Almost all yacht charters in the U.S. Virgin Islands will start in St. Thomas. Main charter bases are located in Compass Point and Red Hook marina, offering professionally maintained sailing boats, catamarans and power boats for bareboat rentals. This is the perfect place to begin your sailing trip due to it’s close proximity to other major islands that offer plenty of experiences to enjoy. Sets you up your sails for an unforgettable adventure on the new sailing boat or catamaran in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Travel information
Because most of the yacht charters in US Virgin Islands start from St. Thomas, we recommend flying directly to this island, booking a resort a day or two before your trip. This will give you some time to explore Magens Bay Beach, schedule an ecotour of the island’s rich natural landscape or simply relax and buy all necessary groceries for the upcoming sailing vacation.
As you travel by sailing boat or catamaran, the nearby St John is a great place to anchor and stop for incredible snorkeling, diving, and beach bumming for an afternoon. More experienced sailors can venture to St. Croix, which may take 4-6 hours of sailing depending on the weather conditions. This could also be good chance for novice sailors to master their skills if they have professional skipper on board.
U.S. citizens do not need a passport or visa to enter the islands, while non-U.S. citizens must follow all travel protocols for the U.S. mainland. If you are a non-U.S. citizen, be sure to check with your health insurance provider to ensure they cover overseas medical care. Medical facilities are available for most of the larger islands of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
No matter what kind of sailing itinerary you choose, new experience on board of your yacht in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be one for the books. This group of islands is favorite among sailing community because of its endless beauty and opportunities to explore. Our charter yachts provide an ideal setting for an unforgettable family vacation, catering to the needs of families with young kids, teenagers, or young adult children. Our crews are well-equipped and experienced in handling kids that are old enough to swim, ensuring they have a blast while exploring the charter destinations to the fullest. They will even prepare meals tailored to each person’s preferences, accommodating even the pickiest eaters. If you’re a parent, you can unwind and witness your kids having the time of their lives. Cherish the adventures and precious moments together, as there are abundant activities and experiences for everyone to enjoy during this exceptional island-hopping vacation.
• Onboard Diving Charters
With a personalized itinerary that caters to your preferred schedule and pace, you have the flexibility to scuba dive at your own leisure and visit the dive sites of your choice. One of the advantages of chartering a yacht is that many of these dive sites are located in remote areas only accessible by smaller vessels, ensuring you can explore pristine coral reefs teeming with vibrant marine life. Even if some members of your group do not dive, they won’t feel left out as most dive sites also offer excellent snorkeling opportunities. Alternatively, they can partake in the numerous onboard activities offered by the yacht or venture ashore while you indulge in your diving adventures.
How does the contract and booking process work? Do I need to pay all at once?
Contract and Booking Process Overview
1. Once your charter dates and cruising area are determined, A working hold is placed, so you can reserve flights and finalize the last details with your group. The hold is valid for two weeks. This timeframe allows you to execute the charter agreement and transfer the charter deposit into escrow.
2. The Charter Yacht Brokers Association Inclusive Charter Agreement, detailing all charter terms, is electronically drafted, and signed by all parties. Upon signing the agreement, a 25% charter fee deposit is due, to be wire-transferred into the charter escrow account. These funds are managed according to the charter agreement terms.
3. Six months prior to the charter an additional 25% deposit is due, to be wire-transferred into the charter escrow account.
4. At 60 days prior to the charter, guest preference sheets are sent to all guests for completion. This information is critical for the crew so we can best serve all guests according to their individual needs or preferences.
5. 30 days before the charter, the remaining 50% balance is due via bank wire transfer into the charter escrow account. Once funds are received, welcome letters are sent to guests by the crew, and preference sheets are requested back, if not already submitted. Also at this time, the crew will conduct a phone call with the primary guest to discuss the itinerary, menu, and address any pending changes or unaddressed needs or preferences.
6. In the week leading up to the charter, the crew reconfirms all details with the primary guest and coordinates ground transportation from the airport to the marina.
7. On the day of the charter, the crew remains in constant contact with the primary guest to facilitate the arrival of all guests and provide a warm welcome aboard!
Can we bring our children?
Of course! Our charters are mostly design for older kids and adults to enjoy, but please feel free to inquire if you will be boarding with children under 5 and we can accommodate!
Will I need a passport?
If your itinerary involves stops outside of the U.S. Virgin Islands, you will need a passport. So ,for the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. Not for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Does the crew sleep aboard?
Yes, of course! They will be there 24/7 to cater to anything you need. They have their own crew quarters and can adhere to any privacy requests you have. This is beneficial, not only for your overall vacation experience but for your safety as well.
Can we sleep aboard the night before our charter?
Absolutely, we offer what is called a ‘Sleep Aboard’ for the majority of our yachts. It is available for half of the daily rate and includes boarding after 4pm, snacks, welcome cocktails & continental breakfast. Dinner ashore is additional. It must be pre-arranged so mention your interest upon booking.
EXCLUDES: Christmas and New Year's weeks.
What airport do we fly into? Which marina do we meet at?
For charters in the USVI and/or BVI, you will be flying into Cyril E. King (STT) on St. Thomas, USVI. There are two main marinas we sail out of, both on St. Thomas. Yacht Haven Grande (YHG) in Charlotte Amalie and American Yacht Harbor (AYH) in Red Hook. YHG is closer to the airport and more developed, so that is usually the preference, but if you wanted to come in the night before and explore the local scene, Red Hook has more of a night life and restaurants. The crew can help arrange a taxi to meet you at the airport and take you to the yacht and then throughout the trip the boat will take you ashore using their dinghy/tender. If you prefer to fly into the BVI, let us know and we can accommodate depending on the yacht.
For the Bahamas, you will fly in and out of Nassau.
What time should we expect to get on and off the boat?
Charters are typically 7 nights (8 days), noon boarding to noon disembarkation. Please enquire if you need other arrangements and we will do our best to adhere to your travel schedule.
While a 7-night charter provides an excellent experience, if you have the flexibility in your budget, we highly recommend considering a 10-night charter for an even more luxurious and immersive experience. This extended duration allows you to slow down the pace a bit and spend more time in each anchorage, enhancing the overall quality of your voyage. A 10-night charter is the ultimate choice for guests seeking a little extra in their luxury experience!
Is there WiFi onboard?
Yes! All of our yachts come equipped with WiFi - some even have Starlink! There may be dead zones depending on your location, but that’s a great excuse to unplug!
Should I pack suncreen?
We supply a generous amount of eco-friendly SPF 50 sunscreen for your island adventures. However, if you choose to bring your own, it must be lotion-based and reef-friendly. Spray-on sunscreens or Coppertone products are not allowed on board because they can discolor the deck and create slippery conditions. We strictly forbid these products to prevent damage to our vessels. Additionally, please refrain from using sunscreens that contain self-tanners or bronzers, as they can stain fabrics and harm the boat. It's important to note that in the USVI, sunscreens containing harmful chemicals known as the Toxic O’s, which are detrimental to coral reefs, are banned.
What should I pack?
We recommend traveling light for maximum enjoyment. Opt for a soft-sided duffel bag instead of cumbersome hard luggage, as it's easier to stow and will ensure a more comfortable experience. Below is a sample packing list to assist you:
-Four to five shirts
-Four to five shorts or dresses
-Three or four swimsuits
-Beach cover-ups - the Caribbean sun can be deceptive. Don’t get burned!
-Two pairs of shoes: a pair of flip flops and, either a pair of hiking shoes, tennis shoes, or water shoes (whatever you prefer to walk in if you are planning on doing some of the beautiful hikes ashore). Remember you will be spending most of your vacation barefoot :)
-Phone or camera and charger (we have travel adapters on board if needed)
-Hat and sunglasses
-Seasickness remedies, if anyone in your party is prone to this ailment
-Cash for purchasing souvenirs, cocktails on shore, etc. We will most likely not be passing any ATMs once we are on charter. We recommend obtaining Eastern Caribbean Dollars at the marina ATM if possible. Most locals will accept USD but ECD is easier and will give you better value.
-Personal cosmetic and toiletry items
-An easy-going, fun, and adventurous attitude! :)
What should I not bring?
-Snorkel gear - we have fins, masks and snorkels on board. We recommend that you bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them, as this tends to be the best fitting gear.
-Sunscreen, especially no aerosols or sprays. We provide reef-safe and environmentally friendly sunscreen in SPF 50 that you are free to use. If you do prefer to bring your own, please consider a sunscreen with mineral ingredients (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) which are less harmful to corals and reef life.
-Bath & Beach Towels - we provide both for each guest. We will supply a fresh set of towels mid-charter.
-Soap, shampoo & conditioner are provided in each shower. Some guests prefer to bring their own which is totally up to you. Whatever you decide to pack, be sure to bring along all of the items that are going to make sure you are comfortable.
Will I get sea sick?
With how calm the bays are it is rare, however if you are sailing and the seas are high, you could. It is recommended that if you are unsure, or if you have a tendency to get motion sickness, you bring a preventative medication like Dramamine or Scopolamine patches. Our crews are experts at avoiding and assisting with this as well!
Are the Chefs able to accommodate different dietary restrictions?
Absolutely! We understand this can be a sensitive issue and we want to accommodate however we can.
Our Chefs are able to accommodate some dietary restrictions depending on what they are and which islands we are visiting. Typically, they can accommodate all but proper Kosher.
When is the best time to charter in the Virgin Islands?
For the Virgin Islands, the chartDr season runs from November through July with December through May being absolutely beautiful with January through March being exceptional. In the summer, the yachts transit out of the Caribbean Hurricane Belt from August through October to avoid Hurricanes, so they are not available.
For the Bahamas, April through August are primetime!
What if I want to dine majority on shore?
The standard is for charters to be ‘FULL BOARD’ meaning all meals on board the yacht, but we also offer:
HALF-BOARD OPTION: Includes 7 breakfasts, 4 lunches & 3 dinners, happy hour canapes, standard ships bar and snacks.
LOCAL FARE OPTION: Includes 7 breakfasts, 5 lunches & 6 dinners, happy hour canapes, standard ships bar and snacks. Any onshore meals are additional. We absolutely can abide by your dietary restrictions and desires. As dining onshore is additional, keep in mind, your chef will be able to create a menu to suit everyone in your group. Whether you are Kosher, vegan or one of your party is gluten or lactose intolerant, your Chef will cater to your group’s individual needs. Our focus is on fresh local ingredients when possible, and all types of diets are expertly catered for.

Charter Protection
Travel insurance has never been more valuable and a safe investment for charter guests. Most domestic health insurance plans won’t cover medical expenses accrued in another country. However, travel insurance can be used to cover medical bills that come from hospitals in the Virgin Islands, or even hospitals that are out of the charter guests’ insurance’s network during a domestic trip. Some plans even include COVID-19 infections before you depart. Obviously, no one wants to think about the worst-case scenario, but that’s exactly what travel insurance is for. Below we present you with two selected options to choose from based on the guests’ needs.
TravelInsurance.com
“TravelInsurance.com helps you compare plans from the world's leading travel insurance providers. Our comparison engine allows you to easily decipher plan benefits and coverage while choosing the right travel insurance policy for your trip. Sailing the Virgin Islands: Airbnb & VRBO Catamaran Charters
The idea of sailing in the Virgin Islands might conjure up images of celebrities and private yachts. But it’s one of the Caribbean’s best secrets that you can sail the Virgin Islands on a catamaran or sailboat from Airbnb and VRBO. Plus, sailing is the best way to explore the white sand beaches, gorgeous scenery, and snorkeling that make the Virgin Islands famous. Get advice for choosing a sailing charter, plus hacks for day trippers and solo travelers!
After I did a liveaboard snorkeling trip while traveling solo in Thailand, my family decided they wanted in on the adventure. But as we considered closer options in the Caribbean, we realized that most were large boats with mixed snorkeling and scuba diving groups. Soon, though, I hit upon a solution: for about the same per-person cost, we could charter a private catamaran to sail the Virgin Islands.
Experienced sailors can hire a “bare boat” charter, where your group skippers, navigates, and cooks for themselves. But luckily for those of us that don’t know our leeward from our aft, it’s also possible to charter a boat with a captain and crew. In this guide I’ll share the easiest way to charter a boat and what to expect, the best sights of the US and British Virgin Islands, and all the tips you need to plan an amazing vacation.

Virgin Islands Sailing Overview & Planning
What to expect sailing in the virgin islands.
How does a totally effortless vacation sound, with your only decisions being when to eat, snorkel, lounge, and drink tropical cocktails? What about falling asleep to the gentle motions of the boat and sound of waves, then waking up with views of blue sky and turquoise waters from the portals?
If you choose a Virgin Islands charter with a captain and crew, you can completely relax! It’s common for couples to crew boats together and take care of everything. If you choose a boat with just a captain, you’ll likely pick up some sailing skills helping out. And members of your group can pitch in to take turns preparing meals and cleaning up.
For those who haven’t spent much time on a boat, the living space might be smaller than you expect. But you’ll have the ocean and beaches for your playground every day, and can arrange the itinerary to go ashore for dinners at low-key beach restaurants. In short, pack bathing suits, sunscreen, cover-ups, and casual dresses, and leave the heels at home! (More packing tips later!)

About the Virgin Islands
Did you know there are actually three different groups of Virgin Islands? Well, I didn’t, until I took this trip! The British Virgin Islands are the most popular and well-known. Made up of over 50 islands, the BVI are some of the least-developed spots in the Caribbean, but their largest islands are renowned as luxury destinations. The beautiful beaches and party bars of Jost Van Dyke are here, as are the picturesque grottoes of the Virgin Gorda Baths.
Just 20 miles away lie the US Virgin Islands, known as “America’s paradise.” Its three islands – St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix – each has a different attraction for travelers. St. Thomas is famed as a luxury getaway, while the island of St. John is ⅔ undeveloped. Still, there are tons of things to do in St. John , including a national park perfect for snorkeling and hiking. Further south, St. Croix offers colonial history and tours of the Cruzan Rum distillery in addition to spectacular snorkeling.
The Spanish Virgin Islands are actually part of Puerto Rico, so the name is a holdover from when the island belonged to Spain. In the SVI, you’ll find the unspoiled beaches of Culebra and a bioluminescent bay in Vieques. Many travelers here say that these islands remind them of the quieter BVI of years past.
US residents can travel in the USVI and SVI without a passport, but will need one to enter the BVI.
Booking a Virgin Islands Sailing Charter
In both the BVI and USVI, there are companies that exclusively provide sailing charter rentals. If you want a bare boat charter, one of these companies is likely the best option, as they can advise on all the options and considerations for your trip.
However, for a crewed boat, I found that the easiest way to arrange a Virgin Islands charter was to use a site like VRBO or Airbnb. Both offer online reviews, and their bookings follow the same policies as regular vacation rentals on those sites. You can also message with the host before you book to ask any questions.
I’ll share more recommended options later in this guide. I always recommend always booking through a reputable company, so that you have assistance should you need it.
How Long Should You Stay in the Virgin Islands?
Depending on the length of your trip and options from your captain, you might be able to see all of the Virgin Islands. On our one-week Virgin Islands itinerary, we didn’t have time for the Spanish Islands, but easily saw all of the best sights of the BVI and USVI.
Because you spend most of your time on the boat, in the water, or on a beach, you’ll get a lot of sun on this trip! One week was enough for me, with my fair skin and tendency to turn into a lobster. If you plan to stretch your trip to 10 or 14 days, just keep this in mind when you plan your itinerary and pack. You’ll have more time to spend ashore at stops than we did, which will help.
Be sure to read my snorkeling packing list for tips on reef-safe sunscreen, dry bags, UPF clothing and more gear for your trip.
The Best Time to Visit the U.S. and British Virgin Islands
High season in the Virgin Islands is December through April, when most of us are looking for an escape from cold winter weather! Hurricane season begins in June and lasts until November. Luckily, sunshine is plentiful year round, with daytime temperatures in the high 80’s and nighttime temps in the 70’s.
If you can travel in May – June or November – early December, the shoulder seasons, you’re likely to find more availability and cheaper rates.
We traveled at the end of April and the weather was nearly perfect, except for a storm that caused my mom’s flight to be re-routed through Puerto Rico. Luckily she made it onto a small puddle jumper (complete with bawking chicken sounds coming from the hold!) and met up with us just a few hours late. The weather for the rest of the trip was picture-perfect.
Check weather averages for your dates from Holiday-Weather.com .
Choosing a Boat: Monohull (Sailboat or Sailing Yacht) or Catamaran
When choosing a boat, you’ll have considerations such as the number of people in your group, the layout of the boat, and your own personal preferences. Some might want the adventure and experience of a “real” sailboat, while others would prefer a steadier trip with more space and luxuries aboard a double-hulled catamaran.
While I love the romance and classic adventure of a sailboat, I ultimately prefer a catamaran for a multi-day trip. They offer more room, usually with a living room between the two hulls. Double hulls also make catamarans more stable, lessening seasickness and making it easier to walk on the deck. There’s also netting between the hulls at the front of the boat, which creates an amazing place to relax over the water and watch sunsets!
More luxurious boats have ensuite bathrooms for each cabin; in general, the boats accommodate 2-8 guests. Be sure to check the layouts of your choices before you book.
What’s Included in A Virgin Islands Sailing Charter?
The short answer: it depends. Each charter listing will include all the details, and you can also clarify additional points before you book. Some rates include all costs, which makes it easier to evaluate; these usually have a set base price which increases depending on the number of travelers. There might be watersports equipment included like snorkels, water noodles, and paddleboards, which helps you pack less.
It’s common that “provisions” aren’t included: these are all the food, drinks, and groceries you’ll need. Provisioning can be arranged through your booking company or captain, or you can shop for it yourself. We chose to pay our captain to provision his boat, but stopped at a local shop to pick up some extra rum and preferred liquors!
Additionally, there could be other extras such as fuel, water, national park permit, etc. Be sure to check the details of each listing and clarify any points so you can compare your options.
USVI and BVI Sailing Charter Easy Bookings
These options below all have good reviews as well as availability calendars and online bookings. Note that if they begin in the BVI, it’s still possible to visit the USVI, and vice versa depending on what you agree on with the captain or host. The USVI and BVI are only about 20 miles apart – but keep in mind that you will need to bring a passport to travel between the two countries!
Airbnb Sailing Charters
Check out these sailing charters for the US and British Virgin Islands from Airbnb. If you prefer to search for your own options on Airbnb, specify a boat under the “unique stays” option. But keep an eye out for bookings that are only lodging: some boats remain at the dock or don’t include sailing.
VRBO Charters
VRBO is another top vacation rental site, and has many options to book sailing charters in the BVI and USVI . Check some of their best-rated charters including the one my family and I booked, the Guiding Light.

Best Sights for Virgin Islands Sailing
Wondering what the top sights are in the BVI and USVI? Check out these ideas for your Virgin Islands sailing itinerary.
BVI Top Sights | Sights for Sailing in the British Virgin Islands
The baths on virgin gorda island.
The huge, smooth grey boulders and clear turquoise waters of The Baths are one of the most-recognizable sights of the BVI. This national park is a must-see spot for Virgin Islands sailing. Swim in from the bay to snorkel and explore the grotto and calm pools. You can hike from the top of The Baths to the picturesque Devil’s Bay, at Virgin Gorda’s southwestern end.
Jost Van Dyke
The smallest of the four main islands of the BVI, Jost van Dyke is rumored to have been named for a Dutch pirate that used the island’s harbours as a hideout. The island is accessible by ferry service and private boats, as well as cruises that dock and shuttle passengers ashore. White Bay is a gorgeous white sand beach with many bars like the Soggy Dollar, home of the famous Painkiller cocktail. On the east side of the island, visit the Bubbly Pool, a natural jacuzzi formed by waves rushing over the rocky shore. At the Great Harbor, have dinner and drinks at Corsairs restaurant and popular Foxy’s bar. Nearby, hike and snorkel at Sandy Cay, a tropical deserted island surrounded by a barrier reef.
Soper’s Hole, West End, Tortola BVI
Soper’s Hole in Tortola’s West End is one of the places where you can clear customs and immigration from the USVI to the BVI. It has a colorful marina with restaurants and shops which are a good spot for souvenirs. If you need provisions, stop in at Harbour Market. Be sure to check out Pusser’s Landing, a bar and restaurant which also claims to be the birthplace of the Painkiller! You should definitely try both to see if you prefer theirs or the Soggy Dollar’s. 😉
Cane Garden Bay, Tortola
Cane Garden bay is the most popular beach on Tortola, with calm turquoise waters and a beautiful crescent beach. Swimming, windsurfing and other water sports are popular here, as well as the lively bars and restaurants that line the beach. Tour the nearby Callwood Rum Distillery, where they’re producing rum the same way they did 200 years ago.
Norman Island & The Indians
Norman Island is a BVI gem rumored to have inspired the Robert Louis Stevenson classic “Treasure Island.” Snorkel right into the high cliff face at the island’s famous caves which are full of marine life. Nearby, you can also snorkel on the Indians, a dramatic series of rocks as you approach Norman Island. The water on one side of the Indians is deep, but the reef is full of colorful coral, sea fans, and marine life. The Indians are a must-see spot for BVI sailing. At Norman Island’s protected anchorage area known as “the Bight,” visit local bars and restaurants including the floating bar Willy T’s and Pirates Bight restaurant.
The RMS Rhone is a shipwreck that sank in 1867 during a category 3 hurricane. Now, the wreck site and surrounding waters are the Rhone National Marine Marine Park. This is an amazing site for scuba diving, but it’s possible to snorkel as well since the water is very clear. Much of the vessel is still intact.
Top USVI Sights | Sights for Sailing in the US Virgin Islands
Virgin islands national park, st. john.
Virgin Islands National Park occupies ⅔ of the island of St. John. Many of the beaches are fringed by coral reefs. They include Trunk Bay, with an underwater snorkeling trail including guide signs with information on the coral and sealife. The beach here has been voted one of the most beautiful in the world! Annaberg Plantation has the ruins of an 18th-century sugar plantation, which visitors can tour to learn more about the plantation’s role in the African slave trade as well as how it produced sugar, molasses, and rum. Trails through tropical forests lead to the ruins of Reef Bay Sugar Mill, in the south.
Cinnamon Bay Beach, St. John
Cinnamon Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches within the National Park. It’s the longest beach on St. John, with a half mile of white sand plus palm trees and sea grapes for shade. Snorkelers can explore the small cay located less than 100 yards off the shoreline. This beach is still recovering from Hurricane Irma, and doesn’t have any restaurants.
Buck Island, off St. Croix
Off the coast of St. Croix lies uninhabited Buck Island, 175 acres of protected land surrounded by 19,000 acres of the Buck Island Reef National Monument. The barrier reef is a nesting area for three species of sea turtles, and also has an underwater trail through coral and sea fans.
Leinster Bay & Waterlemon Cay, St. John
Waterlemon Cay is tiny island in Leinster Bay, and a top snorkeling spot on St. John with many species of coral, fish, and marine life. A strong current sometimes runs on the north side of the cay, so use caution snorkeling there. On the south side, find longspine sea urchins, many fish, and hard and soft corals. This was another of my favorite snorkeling spots on our trip!
Salt Pond Bay, St. John
Salt Pond Bay has a beautiful crescent shaped beach with calm, clear waters. This is a more secluded beach, as it’s further from tourist spots, and also a quarter mile hike from its parking lot. Salt Pond Bay is one of the top snorkeling locations on St. John, and has access to hiking trails that provide views of the island.
Maho Bay, St. John
Maho Bay is a popular spot to see sea turtles. The seagrass beds in the middle of the shallow bay provide a habitat for the green sea turtles. There are also reefs at the eastern and western ends of the shore with hard and soft corals and many tropical fish species.
Sandy Point, St. Croix
Sandy Point is a pristine beach on the southwestern tip of St. Croix that is also a national wildlife refuge. If it looks familiar, it was featured in the movie “The Shawshank Redemption.” The 400-acre reserve is a habitat for leatherback sea turtles. Since it’s a wildlife reserve, there are no beach bars or services here – just uninhabited beaches.
Magens Bay, St. Thomas
Beautiful Magens Bay is one of the most popular beaches in the USVI, with a mile-long stretch of sand with calm clear waters. It’s known as a spot for snorkeling with sea turtles as well as paddleboarding and other water sports. Relax at the beach bar and restaurant for a drink and a snack.
Getting to the Virgin Islands for a Sailing Charter
Us virgin islands airports, ferries and taxis.
There are two major airports in the Virgin Islands: Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas (STT) and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix (STX). Most charters start from St. Thomas.
Check flights to St. Thomas STT | Check flights to St. Croix STX
There is a ferry that runs from St. Thomas and St. John between Red Hook and Cruz Bay .
At the airport, exit to find a taxi stand outside. Taxis are priced per person based on your destination. Many run like a shuttle, in a large van with other travelers. Get an idea of rates and destinations here .
If you’d like to pre-book a private transfer, here are some options with online bookings and good reviews:
British Virgin Islands Airports & Transportation
There are two ways to get to the British Virgin Islands. The first is to fly directly to Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Tortola (EIS), formerly Beef Island Airport. The second way is to fly to Cyril E. King airport in St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands (STT) and then take a ferry to Tortola, BVI. Most charters in the BVI depart from Tortola.
- St Thomas to Tortola Ferry
Inter-Island Ferries
There are many ferry services within the Virgin Islands .
What to Pack for Your Virgin Islands Sailing Charter Vacation
As I mentioned before, a sailing vacation is very casual! I recommend packing at least 2 bathing suits as well as a rashguard shirt with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) to protect you from the sun. If you’re an avid snorkeler, you might even want UPF capris so that your backside doesn’t get burnt (true story) . A dry-bag is a must-have for trips ashore.
Also, there won’t be much room onboard, so be sure to bring a soft-sided bag rather than a regular suitcase. Get my full packing list for snorkeling trips and liveaboard adventures and check out my list of favorite gear .

Safety note: uscg approved life jackets for kids.
Your charter will surely provide life jackets for all passengers, but it’s especially important for children to have a life jacket (or personal flotation device – PFD) that is meant for their age, size and weight and approved by the US Coast Guard (USGC). USGC ratings specify that jackets for infants and small children should have a padded head support, grab handle, and crotch strap to keep it from riding up (and the child from slipping out).
Get more info here and tips from REI including getting kids used to jackets ahead of time at home. Note: water wings, float suits, and similar items are meant for supervised play. US law requires that children under 13 years of age must wear their lifejacket, unless below deck.

Couples can contact CKIM GROUP to discuss their dream vacation and receive assistance in selecting the perfect yacht and itinerary for their honeymoon adventure.
How do I get started?
There are a few necessary parameters to consider. For example, what type of boat, your destination, the time of year, and who will accompany you. The questions below can help guide your thought process, and your CKIM yacht charter broker will assist in asking the right questions and providing the expertise to design the perfect experience for you.
How far in advance should I book a Caribbean yacht charter?
It’s advisable to book your yacht charter at least six months to a year in advance, especially if you’re planning to travel during the peak season.
What activities would be available on my Yacht Charter?
Based on your yacht and destination, there is a myriad of activities and water sports available to do, such as:
- Scuba diving
- Water-skiing
- Wakeboarding
- Windsurfing
- Stand-up paddleboarding
You will also have many opportunities to visit ashore and participate in the on-shore side activities.
What destinations are popular for yacht charters in the Caribbean?
- The British Virgin Islands: Though there are 60 islands in the British Virgin Islands, the four main ones are conveniently adjacent to one another, providing for a tranquil yacht rental. You can go surfing or shopping in Tortola in the morning, and you can swim on Virgin Gorda’s serene beaches in the afternoon. Without a doubt, among the top 10 Caribbean yacht charter destinations is Nature’s Little Secret.
- The US Virgin Islands (USVI): Don’t mix the US Virgin Islands (USVI) with the British Virgin Islands that are nearby; the USVI is located southeast of Puerto Rico. Important things you should know
Security deposit.
If renting a yacht in Thailand you need to pay the deposit. The deposit is payable on site. In other countries, Croatia, the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Greece, Spain, Sweden, and the Bahamas, the security deposit is covered by our Carefree package and there is no need for additional onsite payment.
Security deposit for Seychelles: Payable at embarkation, by cash or credit.
Mandatory extras - Navigare Carefree Pack
If you would like to rent a yacht in the BVI, Croatia, Greece, Spain, Sweden & the Bahamas there is an obligatory extra “Navigare Carefree Pack” that is added to the yacht rental price.
We want to achieve a stress-less vacation for our clients by eliminating all the payments once you arrive at a base. For that reason, we have created the Navigare Carefree Pack . With the Navigare Carefree Pack, there is no need for a deposit as it covers the insurance for the yacht, and you avoid all the hidden costs as well as renting a yacht. Except for the insurance, the Navigare Carefree Pack (Croatia, Greece, Spain and Sweden) covers as well:
- welcome package: (matches (2), paper roll (1), toilet paper (4), garbage bag (1), dish mop (1), dish sponge (1), washing liquid for dishes (1).
- final cleaning
- bed sheets & towels
- dinghy, outboard engine & fuel
- cooking gas
- full water tanks
- 2 x snorkeling equipment
- free Wi-Fi Internet on board
The Navigare Carefree Pack (Bahamas and BVI) covers:
- snorkeling equipment
- beach towels
- National parks permit and VISAR (BVI only)
The Navigare Carefree Pack is paid upon the yacht booking and there are no more additional payments when you arrive at the base like for example deposit for a yacht. If you would like to rent a yacht in Seychelles, Thailand, or Türkiye , there is a mandatory deposit that covers the insurance of the yacht that is added to the yacht rental price.
Optional extras
To enjoy your sailing holidays to the fullest we offer optional extras (add-ons) that you can add to your charter. Optional extras depend on the chosen destination, and you can book them online. Optional extras differ by destination and include additional yacht equipment (water toys, stand-up paddle, railing net, etc) as well as services like skipper and hostess, permits & transfers. You can check which extras are available by clicking “Edit Extras” or “Add+” next to the “Optional Extras” in the right widget and choosing which one you would like to include. Skipper as a service is available in all the destinations.
To preview and add the extras, click on the "Add extra" link in the right-hand column, and extras applicable for the chosen destination will be shown.

Terms and conditions, charter experts, llc terms & conditions.
PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.
If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.
These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.
- Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.
Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker. By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.
- Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
- Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.
Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.
- Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
- Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
- Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.
You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.
By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.
Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.
- Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.
You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.
You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).
You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.
- No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. The Best Places to Learn How to Sail, From the Greek Islands to the Florida Keys
Posted: March 21, 2024 | Last updated: March 21, 2024
Sailing is one of the best ways to explore some of the most beautiful, untouched coastal destinations around the globe. But from the outside, learning how to sail might seem like an intimidating—and expensive—pursuit.
However, learning to sail isn’t as difficult as it might seem. And contrary to what some may believe, “sailing is for everyone,” Zeke Quezada, the Director of Communications at the American Sailing Association (ASA) tells Condé Nast Traveler.
“It is important to understand that anyone can sail, and it is really easy to learn,” Quezada says. “Sailing is not just for the affluent; head into a community sailing club at your local marina, and you'll have options to get out on the water for little to no cost.”
While mastering the art of sailing takes consistent practice, hopeful captains looking for a crash-course to jumpstart their journey may consider a sailing vacation . These educational charters allow you to fully immerse yourself in the nautical lifestyle —and you can earn official certifications along the way. On these types of trips, “you have a qualified skipper on board who is offering instruction, as well as advice on how to become a safe and confident sailor,” Quezada explains. “The best part is that you can have your family onboard, and everyone is having a vacation while you check off the bucket list item of learning to sail.”
When planning your first sailing trip , look for trips and schools that offer credentialed schools and instructors; organizations such as ASA, US Sailing, and the Royal Yacht Association are internationally recognized. By following these certification tracks, you can become licensed to sail a charter without a captain on board, also known as a “bareboat charter.” Though not required in some places, a bareboat certification makes it much easier (and safer) to rent your own boat .
No matter which route you take, sailing is a lifelong skill that will open doors to a community of people passionate about getting out on the water and protecting the oceans. “Most importantly, you will learn how to sit back, turn off the phone, and feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face,” says Quezada. “You might start listening to Jimmy Buffet as well.”
Below, we’ve rounded up the best places around the world for learning how to sail—including destinations in North America , Europe , Asia , and Australia —plus, the sailing courses and trips to book in 2024.

The Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands and US Virgin Islands are some of the best training grounds for novice sailors “because of their line-of-sight sailing, predictable wind, and sailor-friendly destinations,” Quezada says. “In the BVI, you can learn to sail and have a beach vacation simultaneously.”
If you’re looking to get your bareboat license, there are several ASA-certified sailing schools in the BVI and US Virgin Islands. Offshore Sailing School , one of the world's preeminent sailing institutions, offers fast track courses for all levels of sailing. Alternatively, charter a captained catamaran, one of the most popular ways to explore the Caribbean.
Florida Keys
Warm temperatures, calm turquoise waters, and consistent easterly winds make the Florida Keys one of the best places to learn to sail in the US. Stay at the Key Lime Sailing Club and cottages resort on Buttonwood Sound in Key Largo and take lessons at the American Sailing Academy , located onsite.
Alternatively, outdoor education organization Outward Bound, which offers program scholarships, is hosting a Florida Keys sailing excursion for adults in March/April 2025. Participants will live on a 30-foot open sailboat for slightly over a week learning beginner, intermediate, and advanced skills in chart and compass navigation, small boat seamanship, weather observation, and anchoring.
Greek Islands
Sea of Cortez, Mexico
New England
There’s no better way to experience a quintessential New England summer than by sailboat. The sailing season in the Northeast runs from April to October, with ASA and US Sailing accredited schools located in major metropolitans like New York City and Boston as well as coastal enclaves like Newport and Cape Cod .
For adults seeking a basic introduction to the sport, US Sailing offers “first sail” lessons in dozens of locations up and down the Eastern seaboard. Pull on a striped sweater, pack a bottle of rosé, and you’re good to go!
Croatia’s Adriatic Coast is home to a vibrant sailing community with picture-perfect weather conditions. Beginner sailors will appreciate the gentle winds of Dubrovnik, the Split Islands, and Kornati National Park , whose sheltered coves and bays supply calm and predictable winds. Enjoy incredible natural wonders only accessible by boat, like the famous Blue Cave.
Student sailors can earn beginner, intermediate, and advanced ASA certifications aboard 8-day learn to sail vacations in July, August, and September 2024. Hosted by American Sailing partner Sailing Virgins, the catamaran and monohull ships—each a minimum of 40 feet with 3-5 cabins—visit the Croatian islands of Brac, Korčula, Šćedro, Komiža, Vis, and Hvar.
