Owner of Boat that Killed Teen Wakeboarder Ella Adler Is Identified

Authorities in Florida have identified the man they say owns the boat that allegedly hit and killed 15-year-old Ella Adler over Mother's Day weekend.

Ella died on Saturday when a boat allegedly hit her and fled the scene near a beach in Key Biscayne, Fla., the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said in a statement earlier this week.

On Wednesday, the FWC identified the owner of the boat as 78-year-old Carlos Guillermo Alonso, according to an incident report reviewed by PEOPLE. However, an FWC spokesperson tells PEOPLE it's not clear if Alonso was operating the boat at the time of the crash, and that no charges have been filed.

Ella was “hit by a vessel,” the FWC said in their previous statement, which has a light blue hull and was headed west after hitting her. 

The incident report claims Ella was wakeboarding with a friend and the two fell into the water at different times and in different locations. The boat owned by Alonso "traversed the area" and allegedly struck Ella, per the report.

On Tuesday, FWC officials said they had seized a vessel that "fits the description" of the one that hit Ella. The owner of the vessel — since identified as Alonso — had been cooperative with authorities , the FWC said in their statement.

Ella, a ballerina and student at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, Fla., was the granddaughter of U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Michael M. Adler, CBS reports.

On Wednesday, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden visited Ella's family to pay her condolences, per the outlet.

Ella is being mourned by friends and family who say she “shined” on the stage and was a “force of nature.” 

“[When] she was near, everyone felt a gravitational pull toward her,” read an obituary . “In her 15 years on this earth, she dazzled us with her light.”

“We are heartbroken,” Ransom Everglades School said in a statement following her death, adding that Ella “embodied the mission of Ransom Everglades School.”

In a statement issued through their attorney, Ella’s family said the world “lost a star.”  

“Ella was beautiful and shined brightly. In her 15 years she gave us more light than we could have ever dreamed,” they said in the statement, CBS reported.

The Strait of Gibraltar connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.

A pod of killer whales attacked and sunk a yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar, between Spain and Morocco, officials confirmed to ABC News.

Two people were on board the vessel when the incident occurred Sunday at 9 a.m. local time, according to Spain's maritime authority.

The nearly 50-foot yacht, named The Alboran Cognac, was 15 miles from Cabo Espartel in Morocco when an unknown number of orcas began ramming it.

The couple alerted Spanish authorities and a rescue team arrived to extricate them from the vessel an hour after the attack, though officials were unable to salvage the sinking boat.

There have been approximately 700 orca attacks since 2020, according to GT Orca Atlantica, a conservation group, and officials believe there are more than 37 orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Strait of Gibraltar connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, separating Europe from Africa.

"During the summer and autumn of 2020, interaction events began to occur between several specimens of this species and vessels, mainly sailboats, both in the Strait of Gibraltar and in the waters of the Galician coast," according to Spanish government officials. "These interactions have ranged from persistent approaches to ships, to ramming the hull and rudder, causing various types of damage, which continue today."

It's unclear why orcas attack boats, though experts hypothesize the marine mammals could be targeting vessels for sport or they feel threatened.

According to a study in Biological Conservation , a peer-reviewed journal, "sophisticated learning abilities" have been found to exist in orcas.

In June 2023, racing yachts in the Strait of Gibraltar had a close encounter with a pod of orcas, race officials said at the time.

Crew members aboard a rival pair of 65-foot yachts were on the final leg of The Ocean Race, a global sailing competition, when they reported being intercepted by killer whales as their boats approached the Strait of Gibraltar.

No fatalities were reported in the incident, according to officials.

Orcas Strike Again, Sinking Yacht as Oil Tanker Called for Rescue

The orcas are back at it again, this time straight-up sinking a yacht near the Strait of Gibraltar.

As the  New York Times reports , two people had to be rescued after a group of orcas attacked the Alboran Cognac, a 50-foot-long sailing yacht, about 14 miles off the coast of Morocco.

According to those on board, the animals replayed their greatest hits by going for the yacht's rudder, slamming its hull, and ultimately causing the vessel to spring a leak.

During the attack, the two-person crew radioed a nearby oil tanker for help, and it maneuvered over to where they were, evacuated them, and took them to Gibraltar. The Alboran Cognac, according to Moroccan maritime authorities, was left adrift and eventually sank.

While it's unclear if the orcas in question are part of the same pod that's been plaguing sailors around the Iberian peninsula in recent years, their behavior suggests that it either was the OG culprits of the attacks that garnered so many headlines last year or that the clever predators have been teaching other groups their ways .

Orcapalypse Now

As the Grupo de Trabajo Orca Atlántica (GTOA) told the  Washington Post , there have been an average of 168 orca-ship interactions per year since 2020, when this sort of behavior began ramping up in the region.

Thus far in 2024, the researchers have tracked 26 interactions, which according to its website could be anything from approaching or observing a ship to coming up and touching it. That number, GTOA said, is down from 61 from the same time frame in 2023.

As the NYT noted in its reporting, however, the Alboran Cognac is the first boat to sink due to an orca attack this year.

Last summer in particular, the attacks seemed to be occurring on a near-daily basis , with some sailors reporting that their ships had been targeted twice or even thrice by furious orca pods in the same day.

There have been various theories as to why the animals, which are sometimes referred to as "killer whales" despite concerns from conservationists over the term's stigma, have begun attacking vessels so often the past few years. Some experts suggest that orcas, which are highly intelligent and share a lot of psychological traits with humans , are rocking and socking boats for fun . Others believe that the main attacking pod's leader, known as White Gladis, may have been acting out of revenge due to previous boat-related trauma she'd experienced.

Whatever the case may be, it seems that late spring and early summer 2024 may see the sequel to last year's orca-mania — and we, for one, will be watching with eyes peeled.
