Mistral 16 is a 16 ′ 0 ″ / 4.9 m monohull sailboat built by Canadian Yacht Builders (CAN) starting in 1980.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Open dinghy and cuddy/cabin versions. The hull design is thought to be based on the WAYFARER Dinghy (Ian Proctor - 1959). Thought to be the same or similar to CL 16, also built in Canada.

Petrel

I'm looking for others who have any of these small sailing dinghies to share information, photos, repair and rigging tips and ideas. Mistral 16 -- Double chined, sloop-rigged sailing dinghy with Centerboard. Canadian Company is no longer in business. Nice, solidly built boat. The hull is like that of the Wayfarer (Ian Proctor design) and the CL 16 (also a Canadian boat). Specifically, I'd appreciate help with the details of rigging. (There’s a photo of one at the www.sailingtexas.com photo gallery. Mine is white hulled. I’ve got the white sails with the orange and black. Starwing 13 -- unusual sloop-rigged < 13' LOA fiberglass dinghy. Mine is 1987 model. I am about to embark on repairs to the hull, daggerboard well INSIDE (ahem), and part of the bow/side. I'm looking for a jib and would appreciate any help with those dimensions. OR, if you've got a Starwing 13 jib, send me a note. To see a photo of the Starwing 13, you can go to (one of my favorite sites) www.shortypen.com and click on his list of boats. Beetle GULL. ~ 1959 vintage. A pram like design with oarlocks and a center thwart as well as a rear seat. A 10 ft LOA ROBUST fiberglass dinghy that was one of the first production fiberglass sailboats. Carl Beetle of Beetle Boats (Beetle Cat) saw the future in the late 1950's and began making sailboats from fiberglass with the help of General Electric ovens. I stumbled upon my Beetle GULL by accident when looking for a beach dinghy. I realized it was OLD, but didn't know what it was until one night while perusing the ebay offerings, I spotted the same dinghy. Someone had refurbished it along with a Beetle Swan (another Carl Beetle fiberglass boat, like the wooden Beetle Cat). The fiberglass on this boat is robust. I have the rudder and tiller and the centerboard and lever are still attached to the boat. After I spotted the ebay offering, I went out to my "boat yard" with some paint remover and applied it to the foredeck. Sure enough, B E E T L E was embossed on either side of the center design. Who knew. The boat was originally rigged with a single sail and the mast is step through a small opening in the foredeck. The mast for a Sunfish is too wide (think I didn’t try!?) and I’m reluctant (at this point) to alter anything on this vintage hull in case I get ambitious enough to restore it or find someone else who is interested in doing so. Meanwhile, I’ll try to locate the seller of the ebay Swan and Gull offerings (in Georgia, USA). Who knew my passion for old things, tools, antiques and sailing would cross paths. Has anyone else got one of these old timers? I know of only two and I’ve been looking and looking for over a year now. Kolibri aka Koralle Jr.: Sloop-rigged sailing/racing dinghy made in W. Germany and imported into the US in the ~ mid 1970’s. The newer Kolibri made in Calgary Alberta is not the same boat, but is similar, as is the Echo 12 (also from Canada). My Kolibri has a white hull with ORANGE cockpit and foredeck (remember the 1970’s?). It has oarlocks and a mahogany piece at the transom where a small motor can be mounted. It sails responsively and rows well too. Mahogany daggerboard and rudder and tiller with extension. Mast is stepped into a the cockpit. Be careful not to tighten the shrouds and forestay too tightly. Leave more slack than you might think you’d want. These boats are best suited to beaches and lakes because the hull is not fiberglass cloth (laid), but rather polyester resin (perhaps with some fiberglass in it). It is lightweight and pretty. If you find one that is cracked, you can repair it. It is best to use backing. The mast and boom are gold colored anodized aluminum and were offered as single piece or two-piece units. Mine has a 4:1 center sheeted main with a Ronstan swivel cleat and works very well. The jib sheet fairlead and jam cleats are set up in an unusual way: the sheet passes from the fairlead on one side and across the cockpit to the opposite jam cleat. Perhaps it was designed for ease when hiking out. Sweet little boat and I had to use to oars last night when the wind died down. I’d like to time to go tend my Sunfish.

I lived on a NH lake for 18 years & learned to sail in a '70's Kolibri. It was a wonderful, versatile boat. The hull deteriorated over the years and despite some fiberglass work, water had gotten between the hulls & made it heavy & slow. Would love to find another one! I ran across this website: http://www.rvharvey.com/boatstuff.htm . Ralph sounds like a fellow Kolibri fan, & could probably answer your questions. Good luck!

Hi, I just joined so that I could reply to your question. I see it is an old thread so you may not need anymore but if you do, I have a factory owners manual for my Mistral 16 and would be happy to scan it for you if you want. I love the Mistral but may be letting her go soon as I just bought a Spindrift 22 to take down to the keys for a while. Where are you located? [email protected]

Anyone know of parts suppier or repairer for original East German Koralle 13.52 foot dinghy

  • Nov 20, 2012

Beetle Gull - This is an old post, but I also just joined. If you still have the beetle gull, please let me know. I just acquired one in rough shape. I was able to get in touch with the gentleman from Georgia that had the Gull and Swan that he restored. Would love to talk to you.

Water transportation Sail Boat Sailing Vehicle

I have a Mistral 16 but the cabin version , similar but you guessed it with a cabin .. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and have not sailed it yet , cant wait !!! That being said my father has had everything from a sandpiper to hughes 48' and when he told me to just on a mistral because of epic reliability extremely forgiving and a boat load of fun , I went for it! I have not been to see my father to have him help me with rigging the sails , I have a main , jib and spinnaker(with a rod) and have no idea even on how to attach the boom , I raised the mast ( couldnt resist ) and attempted it but no luck, not enough experience in rigging .

@ Simon: I have the same Mistral16, cabrio version. I bought it without manual, but learned about rigging by looking for instructions for Wayfarer. There is a webpage with 20 or so photographs explaining in detail how to rig it, and in which order. I have URL on the other computer, let me know if you cannot find it, I can post it here (I hope). @ smallboatlover From the pics you put on looks as if your boat has spinnaker tunnel, right? Mine has just two round access panels in the bow, for access to the mast pivot pin and perhaps some limited storage.

On a second thought, why wait for a reply. Here's illustrated rigging guide for Wayfarer, it is identical for Mistral 16 or CL-16. Caution Water - Sailing - Wayfarer Rigging Guide Cheers all

Yes my boat does have a spinnaker shoot on the starbord bow and on the port side is a rectangle storage area all the way from foward of cockpit to bow lot od extra storage an i think the way i have it rigged workes good

Not being overly experienced with rigging variations, I am curious where your rigging differs from the one I put link to previously. I do mine pretty much as shown there, I believe manual shows something very similar, takes me about 30min to get her up and ready to launch from the road trailer (includes sails hoisting). Certainly would not mind to do it faster and maybe easier.

i'm not sure i i i can describe it good enough but theres two side stays and a foward on i hook the side ones up first then put the mast throught the pin then raise it and attach the foward stay i'm not sure how else to describe it it takes me about 5 mins to put the mast up 15 to put it in the water ready to sail any other questions ask ill try to describe better if you need

That was a good description. I hoist the mast the same way, and it looks to me to be the only way. Otherwise you need at least one other person to hold the mast upright. What takes me the most time is to unpack everything from the trailer and car just to start rigging - and same goes for taking the rig down. Hopefully with some more practice it will move much faster.

I'm going to look at at Mistral 16 on Tuesdauy morning 6/5. Looks like a decent boat, They are supposed to be modeled after the Wayfarer which I have always wanted. My only problem is this boat would only fill my desire for a day sailer not an overnighter. A Wayfarer is better at both tasks than the Mistral. But I want a boat and this one is for sale and close by, a Wayfarer would be more difficult to find (at leat I could be sailing and racing this summer) Here is a link to the craigslist add. http://nh.craigslist.org/boa/3039017552.html Can anyone who is familiar with these boats tell me anything I should be looking out for or offer any advise. As far as replacement parts and sails does the wayfarer and cl-15 parts and pieces fit onto this boat? I used to have a Newport 21 (which was also a rare boat) I loved it but it was a little to big to take in and out of the water all the time, I need something smaller and lighter then that was. Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

Yes look for loose fittings on my boat none of the fittings had backing plates my jib fairlead poped out while sailing last year. Also there really nice boat more of a racing boat then cruiseing kind. they like to heel a lot when sailing. no to good in heavy winds unless you have more then just 1 person. im always single handed so heavy weather sailing for me is dificult.

Thanks, thats good to know, I'll take a good look for loose fittings. Was that an easy fix or have you not yet fixed the problem. Seems likke it would be dificult to get backing plates onto the back of the fittings with no access into the hull. Here is a link you might be interested in. Its from the Canadian Wayfarer Association. http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/wayfarer_racing.pdf loads of info on Wayfarers which are almost the same boat.

Yes they were a easy fix and i couldnt put backing plates in but i could put insertes inthat grab more like backinf plate but these inserts you screw in and they flare out then yiu screw your staines screwes into them

Thanks for all of the info; I'm now a part of the proud Mistral 16 owners club. I think we should try to start an association or at least a face book page for Mistral 16 owners. There are at least 4 of us on Sailnet. So the boat didn't look as good in person as it did in the pictures (they never do though) Over all it wasn't bad, she will need some work to be sailable like reattaching the spreaders, some new lines, and a better inspection of all of the fittings/ heard wear. 16 ft Sail Boat & Trailer There are some hairline cracks in the decking Im not sure how to fix these but I don't think it's too bad) the haul is in good shape though, seemed solid throughout and the gel coat seemed in good condition. The main sail and jib are really the best part of the boat being almost new, some minor stains but the fabric is still crisp and new feeling, no tears or frays. The owner was asking $1200, I offered $500 and we settled on $800 after some negotiation. I'll have the boat home on Sunday to give a more thorough cleaning looking over.

Can anyone tell me or take a picture of what is under the mast on Mistral 16s. I have a pin that goes through the mast about a foot and a half from th bottom of the mast. then the mast pivots up and all the weight is on that pin. It seems like there should be something underneath the mast for it to sit on. Am I missing something or is this really how they work

@ dklein90 There is nothing below the mast - lower end actually hangs in the air. But do not worry, pivot pin can take both the rigging weight and tension in the stays. When you open round hatches on either side of the mast slot you can feel with your hand how walls are thickened around the pin holes - at least 1/2" of fiberglass there if not more. Also be careful with the cotter pins and washers that keep pivot pin in place - if you drop them it might be quite a job to collect them from the hollow hull. As for the mast, you should have some kind of removable soft sleeve that you put around the part that sits in the slot - it prevents mast from sliding sideways and prevents it from causing fretting damage to the mast slot. Worst comes to worst, a rug can do it - once you raise the mast you'll understand what am I referring to. Happy sailing! Bo

Hi, I am an owner of a Mistral 16 daysailor. We have had the boat in our family for several years. With the kids being very young, it was put aside in storage. Since the kids are now older, I have decided to put it back in the water this summer for every one to enjoy. Unfortunately I am unable to find the spreaders for the shrouds. After a few phone calls, no one seems to be able to help me. My only option seems to get them fabricated from a local weld shop, however I do not have any specs. Can any of you help me out? Thanks Matt

Hi Matt: I'd advise you to look at Sailboats Online , spreader for CL16 (twin to Mistral 16) is around 30CAD, bracket similarly priced - if you need one. If not sure, you can phone Chris Larocque and ask for photos of the parts to be mailed, but I would guess that those parts would be a pretty good fit for mistral. I bought lightweight motor bracket for my Mistral from them, and it was an excellent service - not to mention that their bracket is the best fit for a small boat that I was able to find. Happy sailing! Bo

Hi there, We bought a used Mistral 16 in May (2012) with the spi that had been barely used. We had some updates to do on it. We replaced all the halyards, removed the furling mechanism of the furling jib (otherwise the jib could not be tightened), replaced the jib sheet cleats by bigger ones, secured all the screws that were loose, fixed a punture hole, replaced the plug. We got the original manufacturer's brochure on another forum and realized that the cleat on the mast (starboard) and the corresponding cleat on the mast (port) are for the Cunningham. It now sails very well. In fact last week end, my girl friend used the trapeze by a stable 15 N. The boat did great but...unfortunately, we ended capsizing and we lost the rudder. Do you, or anybody you might know, happen to have a Mistral 16 rudder for sale ? Daniel

you should have had the ring in that stops it from coming up. I have no idea

Sorry to hear about your rudder. But how did it get loose? Tiller should keep it from coming off the pins, and tiller itself is held in place by a line that comes from the rudder and keeps the blade down tight - entire assembly is kind of secured in place. As for replacement, I have no idea about used ones. New one from CL is 190 (head) + 240 (blade) + 100 (tiller) which is quite a bit of money. Good luck with your search! Bo

Thanks Bo. Well this boat must be 30 y old at least so there were modifications by previous owners. Also, the St Lawrence River level is low and where we are, in Lake St Louis, many people have broken the centerboard well or the rudder. So I kept the line holding the rudder down rather loose (so if the rudder hit something, it would lift, not break). The crucial thing that was supposed to hold the whole thing in place is a metal clip. It was bent upwards instead of downwards when I inserted the rudder pintle into the gudgeon. THus the clip did not do its job because of that (holding the rudder in place) when the boat capsized. Anyway, thanks for the info; we will look for a CL. Too bad for that delay, trapeze was great. Daniel

So I guess you went out on Saturday, as it was quite windy. I went out on Sunday afternoon - was far less windy, and, since I mostly sail alone, makes it a bit easier to balance. As for the rudder downline, I tend to tighten it, despite shallows around. I have hit rocks few times, but always with centerboard - so far, at least. But you gave me the idea to replace the lines with bungy cords, just for that reason. Cheers, Bo

WE went out on saturday on lake St Louis, at Venture (very close and east to Pointe Claire yacht club). 15 to 17 kn. It was fantastic. 4 hours of impeccable sailing with my girsl friend on trapeze. Then she steered... Bungy cords: yes we tried that: very difficult to have the right tension. Too much, then there is no reason to put one. Not enough tension, then the rudder lifts with speed. Daniel

There is a very inexpensive jam cleat designed just for the job of holding down the rudder. The cleat is on a lever and when the rudder gets bumped it releases. I installed a new jam cleat on my tiller but now that I've heard these stories I'm going to replace it with one that releases. APS - Clamcleats - Auto Release Is there something that is supposed to hold the rudder onto the boat when upside down? My rudder just sits on the pintails and seems like it could eaisly come off. I've never liked the way it is set up. My old boat I had to keep a hammer in my truck just for getting the rudder off of the boat. I think I would try to make a new one myself before buying one at several hundred dollars. A sheet of marine grade plywood, west systems epoxy, a jig saw,and some sanding would probably turn out a decent product. The you only need a bracket and tiller. Best of luck to daniel12345.

Once again-thank you.” -Daniel Jackson (Google)
“ we had good communication during the planning stages and the knowledgeable people at precision sails really got me fixed up good! The sails look and work fabulous! my boat sails better than it ever had! couldn’t be more pleased with the product AND the service!” -Fred Jelich (Facebook)
“ Our new furling jib for a Corsair 27 Had to be specially designed due to the height of the furler, but this was accomplished quickly and in short order we had our sail which fits beautifully and has a great shape. It’s everything we could have wanted, high tech design, thoughtfully executed and affordable.” -Nancy Y. (Yelp)

Mistral 12 Sailing at Somers Point, NJ (YouTube video) I bought this 12-foot Dinghy on Craigslist. The seller said that the boat would be sold to the highest bidder by Tuesday.  It was Saturday and we were leaving for a week's vacation, so I asked my brother to offer $400. The boat was like new, on a galvanized trailer and had a small electric trolling motor and other extras, so I really didn't expect to get it. The photos say the rest.

The boat was manufactured in 1982 by canadian yacht builders, quebec. you would never guess by this wierd hin, i fell in love with the mistral 12 and decided to keep it for myself, but only sailed it four times in as many years i recently celebrated my 82th birthday and it's time to let someone else enjoy the boat., selling boat and trailer for $1,799, i entered the mistral and our two roadmaster "woodies" in two parades and harvested lots of applause, the swiss company, mistral, is well-known in europe. in the eighties, mistral was #1 in windsurfer competition. the canadian branch of mistral built a number of high quality sailboat models. mistral still has subsidiaries around the world that make windsurfers, paddleboards, sportswear, bags & attachments, sunglasses and even cosmetics below are pictures of other mistral sailboats., mistral 16 the mistral 16 was most popular (next four photos) some of the 16' mistrals were fitted with a small cabin download a pdf of the mistral 16 manual (2.7 mb), mistral 4.04 (13' 3"), download a pdf of the mistral 4.04 manual (1.7 mb), below: mistral windsurfer, mistral 4.07 (13' 4") in the center and a mistral 4.04 (13' 3") mistral 4.07  .

Being on board a powerful, reliable boat that also has high performance is an essential part of the pleasure of cruising. The Oceanis 40CC's hull is remarkable for its long waterline, big volumes and efficient wing-bulb keel. As far as her construction is concerned, there are no compromises: the structural inner mounding, glued and laminated to the hull, distributes any stresses from the rigging and keel. This technology combines reliability and strength and also provides perfectly finished locker interiors that are easy to maintain. One of the principal advantages of a central cockpit is the incomparable safety derived from the height of the cockpit, which is surrounded on all sides. There is a step of the coaming on the Oceanis 40CC to make it easier to get up the two teak-covered bench seats in the cockpit. There is a wheel mounted pedestal in the middle of the cockpit. Genoa and mainsail halyards and the lines for the two furlers are brought back onto powerful stoppers that free the halyard winch, whenever necessary. All handling lines are to hand. The Oceanis 40CC's deck is totally logical, simple and efficient, with steps in the transom (standard bathing ladder), liferaft fixing point on aft coachroof, solid aluminum bulwark the full length of the hull, as well as an aluminum rubbing strake. The numerous opening hatches and Dorade vents are positioned in such a way so as not to impede movement on deck. The chainplates for the upper and lower shrouds, which are positioned right against the coachroof, also leave the side decks completely free for easy access to the foredeck for the sunbathing area and the electric windlass. In the interior, the warm atmosphere (cherry finish) on board the Oceanis 40CC is essential to a good quality of life on board. To starboard, the saloon table and the raised settees ensure a pleasant "sea view" from inside the boat. Opposite to port, is the navigation station: chart table with stowage, bookshelves, 16-function electrical control panel, and all the room you need for on-board electronics. In the forward cabin, your guests have a large double berth, hanging locker, many other lockers and an en suite head compartment. In the passageway to port, which runs alongside the large engine compartment, the Oceanis 40CC's galley has everything you would normally find in the best-equipped kitchens: freezer, refrigerator, double stainless steel sink with hot and cold pressurised water, three-burner gimballed stove and many cupboards and drawers. As for the master cabin, all the incomparable advantages of the centre cockpit in terms of comfort and space have been fully exploited: large double berth with access from both sides, vanity-desk with mirror and lockers, large hanging lockers and your own head compartment with WC and separate shower. The Oceanis 40CC is truly the product of in-depth study into the expectations of ocean-going leisure sailors. A successful marriage of classicism and modern technology. Rebel 16 Mark II Sailboat with Aluminum Trailer

Rebel 16 Mark II Sailboat with Aluminum Trailer

Angola, Indiana

Length 16.6'

Stable fiberglass sailing boat carries six people (or 1170 pounds). Includes trailer, full rigging, and TWO suits of sails. One suit of sails is in like new condition, the other set is in very good condition. Serial number 1929 (built in late sixties to early seventies I believe). The centerboard swings up into the cockpit, so you can change the depth to dock in shallow water. The rudder also swivels up if it hits an obstruction. The trolling motor in the photos is not included. There is, however a permanent motor mount on the stern. The boat will take up to a 5hp motor, but my 30lb. thrust trolling motor drives it around just fine. The boat is located on West Otter Lake, Angola, IN. Buyer with the selling price in cash or Pay Pal payment can drive it away. (Trailer takes an 1 7/8" ball hitch.) The following article from Sailing Magazine gives a great description of Rebel sailboats. You can access the original on SailingMagazine.net. Rebel 16 2008 January 8 By Staff This nimble and tough classic is perfect for a daysail or a day of racing This year the boat that holds claim to being America's first production fiberglass one-design will celebrate its 60th birthday. That the boat is still in production makes this milestone that much more remarkable. In 1948, fresh out of the Navy, Ray Greene began building a 16-foot family daysailer out of his Toledo, Ohio, shop using a revolutionary new material called fiberglass. The design of the boat was based on lines drawn by a local high school drawing instructor by the name of Alvin Younquist. With its wide, 6-foot, 7-inch beam and 110-pound steel centerboard the stable little boat known as the Rebel soon became a hit on the Midwest's inland lakes. And while Greene said he never intended to create a racer, thanks to the boat's performance-courtesy of a large 120-square-foot main and 46-square-foot jib on a fractional rig-it wasn't long before a competitive structure was built around the boat. By 1952 a class association had been firmly established and by 1963 the class boasted 138 active members. Not bad. Fleets started popping up across the Midwest, south into Kentucky and all the way down to Texas. Meanwhile, class members could be found sailing the inland lakes of the Eastern Seaboard from New York to Florida. After 25 years of building the Rebel, with more than 3,000 hulls produced, Greene was ready to call it quits and sold the works to a group of Chicago investors. Production of the Rebel continued at a steady pace during the 1970s, and was done under a number of names: Melling Tool Co., Rebel Industries and finally Spindrift One Designs. After Spindrift folded, the Rebel moved to Michigan in 1988 when Nickels Boat Works of Fenton took over with the production of the Mark V model. Nickels continues to build the Rebel, offering buyers a choice of a daysailer version for $9,860 or the optimum racing version for $11,872 less sails and trailer. A stainless steel centerboard now comes standard with the Rebel. Nickels also continues to be a great source for parts and accessories, as well as information, on the Rebel. One tough Rebel While there have been reports of problems with the foam flotation on older boats becoming waterlogged, that has been less of a problem on boats from the 1970s and later. Other than that, a buyer of a used Rebel should find few issues with the condition of this durable little boat. Indeed, boats 25 years and older will still top regatta leaderboards. "They're well made, very rugged boats that will last forever," said Al Vorel, National Rebel Association Commodore, who has been racing the same boat, No. 3914, for almost 20 years. "You don't have to run out every 5 to 10 years to buy a new boat." This is one of the reasons for the longevity of the class. Boats tend to stay in the family, passed down from parent to child, with the younger generations wanting to keep the racing going. "My mother races, and my daughter sometimes races, so there are times we'll have three generations on the course," Vorel said. This also, of course, keeps a lot of boats off the market, and finding a used Rebel can be a bit of a challenge. But thanks to the Internet, it's possible to locate a few sellers. Prices can vary from just under $1,000 for an older boat in need of some work to $3,000 or more for a later model. Buyers can typically expect to pay in the neighborhood of $1,500 for a pre-Nickels-era boat in good shape. We were fortunate enough to find a late 1970s Rebel listed for sale on www.craigslist.org. Better yet, the seller was within trailering distance. The offer on the boat was $1,400, so we drove out to take a look. The boat was well cared for, kept under a roof winters, and showed no structural damage. Other than some algae stains and scuff marks the finish looked good, and all the gear was there, including the main and jib, which the owner said he bought new about seven years ago. We did see some possible issues, including a rusty, pitted centerboard and a wooden rudder that looked to have some rotting. So we offered to pay the full $1,400 if the owner threw in the trailer, which he originally wanted an extra $200 for. The deal was closed and we drove off with the Rebel in tow. Rebel with a cause With the boat parked in our yard the first item of business we wanted to take care of was the rusty centerboard. Nickels offers a stainless steel replacement board, and we could picture how sweet the boat would look with a shiny new stainless fin. Unfortunately, these centerboards run close to $1,000; more than two-thirds the cost of the entire boat. So such an extravagant purchase didn't make much sense. Instead we set about rehabilitating the old board. We removed, with a bit of difficulty, the 110-pound board and set in on sawhorses. The first step was to remove the old paint using paint stripper, then power sanding. We then slathered on some Duro Naval Jelly to remove the rust, wiping down everything with paper towels then finishing up with a clean, acetone-soaked rag. Next, we filled in the pits and hollows with West Marine Surfacing Putty, and sanded everything smooth. We made certain the blade was fair by running a straight edge along the board. We also further faired the rounded leading edge of the board to within the class rule limits, which prohibit tapering less than 1/16th of an inch and more than one inch in from the leading edge. We then primed the board with several coats of Interlux Primocon primer, which when dried we wet sanded with 400-grit paper, and finished with a couple coats of Interlux VC-17m Extra bottom paint. With the centerboard done, we then turned to the rudder. An ice pick determined the wood was beginning to rot near the lower trailing edge. We probably could have rehabilitated the rudder as well, but since we had saved some money by not replacing the centerboard we decided to spring for a new rudder. We opted for a fiberglass blade, supplied by Nickels for $375. This cost covered just the blade, as the original aluminum rudder cheeks and hardware were still in good shape. While we were on the phone with Nickels, we decided to order all new running rigging to replace the weathered lines the boat came with. This included lines for the cunningham, boom vang, centerboard system, as well as sheets and halyards for both main and jib. The total for 112 feet of ¼-inch line and 105 feet of 5/16-inch line came to $100. Next we took a closer look at the standing rigging. The spars showed no defects, and with a bit of metal polish and elbow grease the rotating mast, boom and aluminum whisker pole looked good as new. The 1-by-9 stainless steel shrouds and forestay also showed no visible defects. We did, however, find the diamond stays on the mast to be tuned rather tight. According to the North Sail's One-Design tuning guide for the Rebel, an overly tight diamond can limit fore and aft mast bend, and can even cause negative pre-bend, where the mast bends forward at the tip. Since we want to have a competitive boat, we loosened the diamond tension and will readjust after doing some sea trials. As we said, we ultimately wanted to race our Rebel and didn't want a slow boat. So obviously the 7-year-old suit of sails had to go. This would be our biggest expense, and a new suit of sails would alone exceed the original cost of the boat. A new main and standard jib (a light air jib is also available) from North Sails set us back $1,615, which included $20 for class royalties but not shipping. Certainly this was a blow to our budget, but we rationalized it by thinking about the fun we would be having with some close racing come summer. Our last order of business was getting our bottom clean and smooth. We first scrubbed the hull down with a detergent then wet sanded everything below the rails to a slick surface with 1,200-grit paper. After a rinse and wipe down with the hose and clean towels we were satisfied we had a slick bottom. We finished off by treating all our hardware and moving bits to a little McLube Sailkote spray. We now have what we feel will be a contender on the course for our racing crew of two. Yet, with the roomy Rebel cockpit that can seat six, we're also looking forward to some lazy summer daysailing when friends and family show up. Either way, we'll certainly get our money's worth from this tough but nimble little classic. LOA 16' 1.5" LWL 15' 10" Beam 6' 7.5" Draft 3' 4" Weight 700 lbs, Sail area 166 sq. ft.
