Is GT just a gross misconception?

The lingering fascination with gross tonnage affects how superyachts are valued…but is there a better metric.

The metrics by which we measure superyachts carry value connotations. But value to who? Misconceptions around the true definition of gross tonnage persist across many areas of the industry. Gross tonnage, the second figure quoted in most references to a yacht after LOA (length overall), is a measurement that traces its origin to the merchant fleet using the moulded volume of enclosed spaces of the ship. It may be, however, be an outdated measurement when simplistically attributing value to the user of a yacht.

Originally these findings were published in the Superyacht New Build Report, using Data Supplied by The Superyacht Agency and Rob Doyle Design. The latter whose reimaging of the concept of 'usable space' onboard the convention-busting concept "Project Fury'  led to this piece.

The relationship of GT to the amount of lived-in space is weak. Even the most extravagant real estate does not include a volumetric measurement. Square metres give the floor space, and the three-dimensional space is inferred. Obviously, it has many applications across the commercial sector and for purposes of classification, but its persistence in the superyacht sector leads to misunderstandings.

As a mathematical curiosity, it’s intriguing. Volume increases as the length, width and height of a shape increase (by the power of three). Increase the length of the sides of a cube from one metre to three metres and the volume will grow to 27m3, for example. Large yachts’ cubic spaces (GT) increase disproportionately with length.

tv yacht gross tonnage

The growth of this curve is not as drastic X to the power of 3, as would be expected from perfect cubes, but it does still convey the disproportionate increase in GT vs LOA. Converting this to a meaningful statistic is challenging and should not be taken at face value.

Figure 3, below, shows a selection of well-known sailing yachts and motoryachts plotting GT vs LOA, and while not directly comparable, the less pronounced trend is clear. Sailing yachts do not exhibit a very noticeable increase in volume vs length because, in general, they don’t grow in height vs length in the same way that a motoryacht does. Nothing revelatory there.

tv yacht gross tonnage

The intriguing difference comes when a different metric is applied. By carefully analysing the GAs of a selection of sailing yachts, in partnership with Van Geest Design, and selecting the ‘usable’ spaces, a different distribution can be seen, as shown in Figure 4, below.

tv yacht gross tonnage

Usable space has been calculated here manually but it is broadly the guest usable spaces, no technical walkways, no winch spaces, tender garages or limo bays etc. These spaces are then divided by the cubed route of the floor plan vs GT to remove the volumetric consideration. This is then plotted against the square root of the length vs the length on deck, not the length overall, again to consider the usable spaces. This re-evaluation produces a far less reductive distribution.

S/Y Vertigo, a 67m vessel with 837GT and one of the larger sailing yachts, sits above the trend line in Figure 3, suggesting a high return of internal spaces. However, when taking into account just the interior spaces that can be used by removing outlying space, it falls below the trend line in Figure 4. Conversely, S/Y M5 moves from average to well above the trend line.

This is a concept that requires input, not least from designers and yards, but it allows for more specific consideration of a yacht’s usable space. The majority of this data is available but requires manual manipulation and CAD analysis of GAs. It does, however, offer an alternative and unique re-evaluation of value to the client.

Calculating GRT for Mariner Credentials

I have a question about Gross Registered Tonnage for Mariner Licensing. A good portion of my sea time is on a private yacht that just shows Gross Tonnage on the COI, not Gross Registered Tonnage. Is there a formula used to determine Gross Registered Tonnage for a vessel for Mariner Credentials? Thanks in advance,

The USCG considers 1600 GRT equal to 3000 GT.

I’m not sure what they do about smaller vessels.

Here is what I have used for CG 719S Sea Service Form.

A simplified set of gross tonnage formulas is set forth by the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center, which are based on three measurements: Length (L), breadth (D), and depth (D). Under this system, the means of estimating gross tonnage is as follows:

For power boats: Gross Tonnage = (. 67 x L x B x D) / 100.

For a sailing boat with keel, Gross Tonnage = (.375 * L * B * D) / 100

For freighters with angled or cylindrical hulls, Gross Tonnage = (.67 * L * B * D) / 100

For ships with square barge-shaped hulls, Gross Tonnage = (.84 * L * B * D) / 100**

For a boat with a simple sailing hull, Gross Tonnage (GT) = (.5 x L x B x D) / 100**

Vessel Gross Tonnage Calculator

And 500 GT = 200 GRT. See also 46 CFR 11.211(h) .

Where does it state you can use these formulas to calculate Gross Registered Tonnage for the CG 719S?

You’re making this harder than it needs to be. If the vessel is only measured in GT you don’t need GRT See the link I posted above.

Thank you again. I like idea to simplify and not complicate the issue.

However, I have for years used 46 CFR 69.209 and the Simplified Measurement Tonnage Guide 1 for my calculations for the 719S form.

Many years ago, I was referred to the Gross Register Tonnage regulation of small vessel calculations if it was unknown.

Thanks for all of the great information. So if I am working an a vessel that’s only calculated with the simplified tonnage, how does this type of Vessel Gross Tonnage work when looking to upgrade your license when the Sea Service for the vessels needs to be in Gross Registered Tonnage? I attached a picture of the specs on the vessel along with a license checkoff list. Thanks for all of your help.

Screenshot_20240202-184750

I like Mr Cavo’s method.

If this is for other purposes then I would use the vessel’s name and enter the CGMIX Coast Guard Port State Information Exchange

Last resort: Vessel Gross Tonnage Calculator or by formula 46 CFR 12.603 .

77.8’ x 20.7’ x 10.3’ x .67/100 = 111.14 tons

Thanks for the information. Would the 137 Gross Tons vessel I work on satisfy a Sea Service requirement that’s calling for time on vessels of 100 GRT or more? Thanks again.

This boat I work on is US Flagged.

I recommend looking at the GRT vs gt, Professional Mariner Forum Dec 2013 thread and Mr. Cavo’s post regarding the relationship between the two.

Thanks for the information jdcalvo. What is the National Maritime Center going to consider a 137 Gross Tonnage vessel to be for Gross Registered Tons?

Looking at the CG-719S form, it asks to list “Vessel Gross Tons”. I will put the 137 Gross Tons and will see what happens. See attached.

Screenshot_20240203-004802

Seems that following Cavo’s guidance we both found our solution.

The “SIMPLIFIED MEASUREMENT GROSS TONNAGE” formulas?

The formulas I provided earlier were based on both the CFR and Simplified Measurement Gross Tonnage Guide to comply with the guidance for filling out the 719S form found in Documenting Sea Service on the NMC website. Based on my reading NMC is calculating Gross Tons as GRT. I believe that they will calculate for you given the Length, Beam and Draft based on the vessel type.

Let me know how you read the guidance.

Sorry for the run on sentence.

Reviewed: Ocean Alexander 35R

  • By Diane M. Byrne
  • May 10, 2022

Not too long ago, the only way boatbuilders and designers knew how to convey the sense of space a yacht offered was by referring to the length overall. Even the most seasoned yacht owners judged the possibilities by the literal length. Similarly, yacht after yacht from competing brands offered essentially the same configurations, leaving little differences to distinguish one from the other.

Thankfully, perspectives on both sides of the buying equation started changing.

Naval architects and shipyards realized that their imagination needn’t remain confined by a tally of feet and inches. They began to get creative in how they approached the volume. In fact, they realized that they could push out volume, or gross tonnage, impressively within that physical envelope, opening up a world of possibilities without hurting performance.

Similarly, yachtsmen began to learn that gross tonnage was more important than feet and inches in terms of the creature comforts they wanted.

The 116-foot-9-inch Ocean Alexander 35R, whose gross tonnage is just shy of 300, is the latest model to demonstrate both points. Hull No. 1 was commissioned by a client before the shipyard could exhibit the yacht, and Hull No. 2 sold quickly during its debut at the most recent Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida. As of early December, Hull No. 7 was the first available build slot, with delivery anticipated in 2024. The series is attracting attention from loyal Ocean Alexander buyers and newcomers alike.

“R” in this series stands for “Revolution.” It’s an apt description because the series, which also includes the 88-foot 27R and 97-foot 30R, is different from anything else Ocean Alexander has built in its 40-plus years in business. Starting with the styling, which is decidedly modern and edgy, there’s a deliberate break from the builder’s more traditional look. It’s all the more notable that the appearances of both the traditional cruisers and the Revolution series come from yacht designer Evan K. Marshall.

The Revolution series’ design serves practical purposes too. The 35R’s high, vertical bow, as part of the hull design from Arrabito Naval Architects, provides more room inside. Bulwark cutouts along the main deck benefit the dining area and salon, as well as the owner’s stateroom, all of which are framed with nearly sole-to-ceiling panes of glass. Add in sliding glass doors to each side along with the 35R’s 25-foot beam, and the sensation is akin to being aboard a yacht at least 15 feet larger.

A similar sensation comes belowdecks. There, a short passageway to starboard leads beyond the beach club (more on that in a moment) to a head with a shower, as well as a separate gym with a sauna. Wellness areas like this one are the domain of mega-yachts upward of 150 feet length overall. Not only is it a singular feature, but it also fits without looking or feeling cramped. Even a dedicated head here is pretty uncommon for the 35R’s category. And nothing impinges upon practical space in the engine room farther forward.

Now, back to the beach club. It combines the exceptional with the practical. Marshall designed a T-shaped expanse of glass that stretches nearly the entire width of the overhead and comes partially down the forward bulkhead. It makes the cozy, air-conditioned space—outfitted on Hull No. 2 with a TV and bar to port and a settee opposite—look and feel airier. As appealing as this is, the glass holds an even bigger benefit for those seated on the main deck aft. When the 35R’s transom is open at anchor, moms and dads can take a quick glance through the glass to see their kids jumping off the swim platform or playing in the water without having to stand up and peer over the side of the yacht.

By now, you might have the impression that glass plays a big role on board the 35R. It does, and in yet another way, it enhances the sense of space. The main-deck master stateroom has picture-window ports to each side, in keeping with the current philosophy that owners should feel a stronger emotional connection to the areas where they cruise. On this yacht, that philosophy extends into the en suite head, where a porthole sits high above the tub. Once again, big-yacht thinking makes the 35R a step above the expected.

Of course, Ocean Alexander does stick with some tradition. The interior is semicustom, so owners may enjoy the look of the white-oak soles that are aboard Hull No. 2 and popular in current home design, or they may opt for something a little richer in tone. Owners can request that the shipyard’s cabinetry shop make furnishings too, or they can select items from any number of design houses. Ocean Alexander itself pursued this route for Hull No. 2, choosing bar stools and more from the Italian company Poltrona Frau. Keep in mind that some likely requests have been anticipated, such as pop-up LED lighting rimming the bow lounge for nighttime enjoyment.

While Ocean Alexander named the 35R for its length in meters, don’t be fooled by the number. The yacht’s expansive interior and alfresco areas quickly make anyone aboard forget the distance from bow to stern. And when the guests inquire as to how big the 35R is, owners can give them a quick education in how voluminous volume trumps literal length every time.

Each year, NBC Sports spotlights the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida during a one-hour special, which includes handing out the Best in Show award. The 35R earned that top honor in 2021, beating other world debuts for a panel of judges who evaluated performance, design and technology.

Paper Is Still Popular

Even in this digital world, paper is still practical to some people. One of them is Richard Allender, the director of US operations for Alexander Marine. Because of him, every Ocean Alexander that gets delivered stateside still has a drawer for paper charts at the helm.

Caring for Crew

Because the crew is crucial to the mega-yacht ownership experience, the 35R has several features that ease their ability to work. The main-deck foyer is lined with full-height glassware and dishware stowage, while a door hidden behind a guest stateroom’s art niche provides service access directly from the crew area.

What is Ship Tonnage? All Types and Use Explained!

We’ve all wondered how much a ship weighs and may have come across phrases like gross tonnage, net tonnage, displacement, lightship weight, and so on. We will have a better knowledge of all of these concepts and learn what ship tonnage truly means in this article.

Ship tonnage in shipping refers to a ship’s carrying capacity measured in terms of volume or weight. Tonnage in shipping is defined as the total number of tons registered or the overall carrying capacity of the vessel.

Tonnage originated from the practice of charging dues on ships and is also used to calculate the duty or cost for crew rules, registration, port taxes, and other similar things. These fees were calculated depending on the number of ‘tons’ that a vessel could carry.

Previously, tonnage was determined using the interior volume of the ship. However, the measurement technique has evolved to one in which the cargo’s weight is regarded as the unit of measurement. The conventional unit of measurement for this capacity is the ton. Tonnage has been defined and computed for ships in a variety of ways.

Let us get into the article to find out more.

History Of Tonnage

King Edward I introduced the concept of tax on ships in 1303, based on tonnage laden. King Edward III then imposed a tax on imported wine, measuring each “tun” as 252 gallons (1.146 m3) of wine weighing around 2,240 lb (1,020 kg), or what is now referred to as a long ton or imperial ton.

For tax purposes, a ship’s estimated capacity in “tuns” was expressed using dimensions in feet (Length x Beam x Depth)/100, where depth refers to the hold’s depth below the main deck. The numerator of this equation gives the ship’s volume in ft3, and the denominator is a “tun” that is thought to be equal to 100 ft3.

The Builder’s Old Measurement, often known as burden or burthen and abbreviated as BOM was used to determine a ship’s cargo capacity from around 1650 until 1849 and was then abandoned after much clearer means of calculations was introduced.

The measurements were again in feet, with the length measured from stem to sternpost and the tonnage computed as [Length – (Beam x 3/5)] x [Beam x]/2]/94.

How Was Tonnage Calculated Before Standardization?

Looking back to history, to measure a ship’s tonnage, different countries utilized different standards. George Moorsom created a different way of measuring ships in 1854.

According to this system, the ship’s volume was considered to serve as a better indicator of its size, and this was used to calculate how much to pay for services rendered by ports.

The term “gross” and “net registered tonnage,” which are both abbreviated as “grt” and “nrt,” were used since the unit of measurement had always been “tons” in Britain’s first British Shipping Act (1854).

The Royal Thames Yacht Club created the Thames Tonnage in 1855 as an alternative to the Builder’s Old Measurement and it was designed for yachts and other comparable vessels.

The majority of maritime nations started using the Moorsom technique in the early 1900s, although the results were not always directly comparable due to differing interpretations by various nations, including the precise terminal points of physical measurement and other measurable adjustments.

International efforts to standardize tonnage calculations began in 1925, but the IMO International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships did not become effective until 1969.

This first became effective for new ships on July 18, 1982, and it became completely effective for all ships on July 18, 1994, except warships, boats shorter than 24 meters in length, and some lake and river vessels. IMO terminology replaced GRT and NRT with gross tonnage (GT) and net tonnage (NT).

What Are The Different Types Of Ship Tonnage?

There are five kinds of ship tonnage in use in the shipping business: Gross Tonnage, Net Tonnage, Deadweight Tonnage, Displacement Tonnage, and Lightship Weight Tonnage. Let’s take a closer look at each type of ship tonnage used in shipping.

Gross Tonnage

The overall size of the vessel, stated in terms of volume, of the enclosed area within the ship, from t he keel of the ship to the deck, is known as gross tonnage.

The following formula provides a straightforward way to calculate gross tonnage:

GT = K1 multiplied by V

Where k1 = 0.2 + 0.02LogV and V = total number of enclosed cubic meters

Net Tonnage

The total molded volume of the ship’s cargo compartment is known as net tonnage. Only the vessel’s available capacity for loading cargo is taken into account. About 30% less than the gross tonnage is anticipated for the net tonnage.

The procedure of determining the net tonnage is made easier by the following formula:

Net tonnage = k2 x Vc x (4d/3D)2 + k3 x (N1 + N2/10).

In this case, K2 = 02. + 0.2 LogVc

Vc is the total cubic volume of the cargo spaces.

Summer load line draught is calculated as K3 = 1.25 x (GT + 10,000)/10,000 d in meters. D is the measured molded depth between ships.

N1 = Total number of people using up to eight beds in the cabin. N2 = Amount of additional travelers.

The total number of people that the ship is permitted to transport by its passenger certificate is equal to N1 + N2. N1 and N2 should be treated as zero if N1 plus N2 is less than 13. GT stands for the ship’s gross tonnage.

Deadweight Tonnage

A ship’s contents, including its cargo, fuel , passengers, crew, food, and water, are measured by its “deadweight tonnage.” It is measured in tons which approximately is equal to 1,016 Kilograms.

Displacement Tonnage

The volume of water displaced by a ship when it is at sea determines its displacement. The unit of measurement is Cubic meters. The displacement tonnage refers to the amount of water a ship can move when floating , fully fueled, with all sources on board. The unit of measurement is metric tonnes.

Given that a floating vessel displaces the same volume of water as it weighs, it is the real weight of the vessel. On the other side, a ship’s lightship displacement is the volume of water it displaces when it is empty of all people, crew, cargo, fuel, water, and food.

Lightship Weight Tonnage

The weight of a ship plus its permanent equipment is referred to as lightweight tonnage. Fuel, water, and any other supplies on board the ship are not included in the lightweight tonnage.

What Is The Difference Between Ship Tonnage And Displacement?

In the maritime industry , displacement is a relatively common measurement for vessels. The weight of water that a vessel displaces is known as displacement weight.

The weight of a ship is measured in displacement weight. The displacement tonnage and displacement weight of a ship are the same.

The volume of a ship’s interior is measured in terms of gross and net tonnage. Net or gross tonnage is primarily used for registration and revenue collection purposes.

How Is Tonnage Taxed?

In place of traditional corporation taxation, shipping businesses are subject to tonnage tax. The tax is frequently seen as one of the most significant marine subsidies provided by the government in recent years since it is typically lower than conventional government taxes. Based on the overall tonnage value of the fleet of vessels operated by a single firm, the tax is assessed.

For instance, it makes no difference if the freight is carrying its maximum 10 tonnes of load; the tonnage is what matters. Another benefit of this taxing technique is that it does not depend on business profits or the number of all shipments, making tax calculation simple and efficient for shipping businesses and authorities

Which Authority Issues The Tonnage Certification For Vessels?

Solely based on the tonnage of the ships, manning restrictions, registration costs, port dues computation, and safety norms are developed.

All ships must possess an International Tonnage Certificate (ITC), which is provided by the flag states by the International Convention of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Tonnage Measurement of Ships 1969.

Before delivery, the necessary calculations are performed by the vessel’s classification society . Additionally, it issues the certificate on the flag state’s behalf. Although the certification includes an expiration date, it must be updated if the structure of the vessel changes or if the vessel is subjected to any conversions.

Ship Tonnage Summary

Ship tonnage is an important measuring unit for commercial vessels as it helps the government to impart taxes and duties which serves as an important means of revenue.

Ship tonnage can also be used as an indicator in terms of the total volume enclosed in the vessel.

The Tonnage Measurement Survey

The purpose of this guide is to provide further information concerning the tonnage measurement survey which is a fundamental part of the yacht registration process.

Oceanskies is able to provide the yacht tonnage measurement survey service as part of our complete yacht ownership and registration packages, including both offshore and onshore ownership structures, or we are happy to carry out the tonnage survey as purely a stand- alone service.

We find that the tonnage survey often provoke a number of questions from our clients, not least in respect of why it is needed and why it is required for a production vessel but it also can be confused with other surveys, particularly condition surveys.

British Merchant Shipping Laws require all yachts registered under Part I of the British Register of Ships to have been surveyed by a recognised surveying authority or classification society prior to being registered.

A tonnage survey is also required by all other principal yacht registries with whom we work.

The purpose of the tonnage measurement survey is to ascertain the vessel’s tonnage and principal statistics, in addition to providing independent verification to the registry concerned that the vessel actually exists.

The tonnage survey report provides the registry with the tonnage, dimensions and engine specifications that will appear in the register and on the yacht’s Certificate of Registry.

The tonnage and dimensions of the yacht will determine the application of legislation such as safety and manning requirements, in addition to providing the basis for the calculation of fees or taxes affecting the vessel, such as mooring fees and harbour dues.

A tonnage survey is necessary even for a yacht which may be one of a class or from a production line, (where measurements may have already been taken for a nearly identical vessel).

This is because principal statistics can differ between production yachts and certain unique information will apply to a vessel, such as the Hull Identification Number (HIN), in addition to the engine identification numbers and specifications.

Above all, it should be remembered that the survey is required on a production yacht to evidence the vessel’s existence.

The tonnage of a yacht should not be confused with the actual physical weight of the vessel.

The tonnage is a measurement of the internal capacity of a yacht, in other words it is a volumetric measurement as opposed to a calculation of weight.

The weight of a yacht is known as its displacement, or deadweight (DWT), expressed in Metric Tonnes of 1000 kilograms or Long Tons of 2240 pounds.

The origins of the term tonnage can be traced back to the thirteenth century when data for the carrying capacity of vessels first began to be recorded for vessels carrying cargoes of wine.

The term tonnage derives from the Latin word Tunna which means barrel. Tunnage expressed the number of wine casks that could be carried by a vessel (a tun being the equivalent of approximately 250 gallons of wine occupying around 42 cubic feet).

Virtually all seagoing merchant vessels are measured for individual gross and net register tonnage (known as GRT and NRT respectively).

There are differing ways in which tonnage can be calculated for British registration purposes depending on the legislation governing the individual register.

The majority of the individual British registries require a simplified form of measurement if the yacht is under 24 metres (approximately 79 feet) in length, whilst a more complicated survey must be performed if the vessel exceeds this measurement.

Members of the Oceanskies team are fully authorised by either the Yacht Brokers Designers & Surveyors Association (YBDSA) and/or the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and/or the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) to carry out tonnage measurement surveys ‘in house’ to provide Certificates of Survey for the registration of yachts of up to 24 metres in Load Line Length under the red ensign at all British flag ports of registry including:

  • British Virgin Islands (BVI)
  • Cayman Islands
  • Isle of Man
  • The United Kingdom (UK) ports of registry such as London, Southampton, Plymouth etc.

We can also through our partner Transport Malta approves surveyors undertake tonnage surveys for the registration of of yachts of 24 metres or under in terms of Load Line Length in Malta (Valletta).

Our fees for the performance of tonnage surveys for vessels under 24 metres in Load Line Length for British or Malta yacht registration follow:

Oceanskies in conjunction with classification societies such as RINA, Bureau Veritas, ABS and Lloyd’s Register are also able to organise tonnage surveys for the registration of yachts over 24 metres in Load Line Length for the issue of Certificates of Survey and International Tonnage Convention (ITC69) certificates for both British and Malta registration.

The 5 largest yachts by gross tonnage at the Monaco Yacht Show 2018

By Rebecca Bradbury   14 September 2018

The 2018 Monaco Yacht Show is fast-approaching, and as 120 one-off superyachts prepare to go on display, YachtCharterFleet reveals the five largest on the line-up according to gross tonnage.

In an article written last week, we rounded up the 5 largest yachts attending the Monaco Yacht Show by length . But, below we list - in ascending order - the yachts with the biggest gross tonnage - a measurement that refers to a yachts’ overall internal volume.

#5 Areti – 2,817 GT

superyacht Areti anchors in the Mediterranean

The 85m/279ft superyacht ARETI , a Lurssen build, was fifth on the list for the longest yachts signed up for the upcoming show and stays in the same place when comparing the interior volume.

She returns to the event after making her worldwide debut at the 2017 edition and is expected to once again capture much attention for both her vast expanse and world-class amenities. Among these are gym and spa facilities designed for elite athletes and space for 20-plus guests.

The interior styling from Andrew Winch Design is also notable for its fresh American-classic theme. This has been created by combining makore joinery, Emperador and Borricno marble floors and brass accents.

#4 Aquarius - 2,980 GT

Superyacht AQUARIUS profile shot on the water

After making her debut at last year's edition of the Monaco Yacht Show, the 92m/302ft  motor yacht AQUARIUS is reappearing and takes fourth spot on the leaderboard for her gross tonnage.

The luxury yacht was designed by Feadship, and features immaculate interiors with accommodation for up to 14 guests. She is one of the most recent yachts to confirm her attendance at the event.

Though sadly not available for private yacht charter, the yacht will be on display for show-goers to admire her sleek and contemporary finish. High windows allow light to flood in and bathe her interior spaces, giving the superyacht an elegant and sophisticated edge.

#3 Barbara – 2,984 GT

charter yacht Barbara underway on a Mediterranean yachting vacation

Oceanco ’s 88m/290ft charter yacht BARBARA comes in as the fourth largest yacht by length but, at 2,984 GT, the third largest yacht by volume. With her dark hull and shapely superstructure, the 2017 launch will certainly not be hard to spot lined up in Monaco’s Port Hercules.

Show attendees lucky enough to climb aboard will also find it impossible not to note her unusual layout. Most noteworthy is the owner’s office which, located in the central area of the yacht, has drop-down balconies either side to create a huge expanse filled with fresh air and natural light.

The self-contained master suite, meanwhile, is located forward on the owner’s deck and other distinctive features include an aquarium by Living Color in the main salon, a lower deck cinema with Lay-Z Boy chairs and a striking timber and metal vine sculpture that wraps its way around the lift shaft.

#2 Dar – 2,999 GT

motor yacht DAR cuts through the water while undertaking sea trials

Not only will the 90m/295ft superyacht DAR – also from Oceanco - be the second largest yacht by volume to appear at MYS 2018, but she will be the second largest yacht by length at the event.

Launched in July, she is one of the most exciting superyachts to hit the water this year due to her ground-breaking design and technological innovations. Making her worldwide debut at the show, she is expected to attract much attention and acclaim.

One of her radical features is the glass-clad exterior and this has been designed in harmony with the interior. Based on the theme of nature, the inside guest living areas are said to be decorated in fine fabrics, wall paper, 3D lacquer and woods such as Brazilian Carballo and bleached grey maple.

#1 Illusion Plus – 3,642 GT

motor yacht Illusion Plus outside yard's facilities following her delivery

Ranking in first place with a huge volume of 3,642 GT is the 89m/291ft motor yacht ‘Illusion Plus’ from Chinese shipyard Pride Mega Yachts. This figure is an impressive 643 GT ahead of her nearest rival (DAR) and may be surprising given that, at 89 metres, she is only the third longest yacht on the line-up.

Similarly to DAR, she was launched this summer and will be premiering at the yachting event after undertaking her maiden voyage from China to Monaco . She is expected to receive a warm welcome from industry professionals keen to discover her unparalleled sense of space and luxury interior.

A dedicated spa, beauty salon and gymnasium, and an 80-square-metre master suite are just a few of her highlights for guests to enjoy, while a diesel-electric propulsion package by Rolls Royce ensures the ultimate in cruising performance and energy efficiency.

Boat Gross Tonnage Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Boat Gross Tonnage.

  • BGT is the Boat Gross Tonnage (tonnage)
  • BL is the boat length (ft)
  • BD is the boat breadth (ft)
  • BW is the boat depth (ft)

To calculate the boat gross tonnage, multiply the boat length, breadth, and depth together, divide by 2, then finally divide by 100.

How to Calculate Boat Gross Tonnage?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Boat Gross Tonnage.

  • First, determine the boat length (ft).
  • Next, determine the boat breadth (ft).
  • Next, determine the boat depth (ft).
  • Next, gather the formula from above = BGT = .5*BL*BD*BW /100.
  • Finally, calculate the Boat Gross Tonnage.
  • After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem:

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

boat length (ft) = 40

boat breadth (ft) = 10

boat depth (ft) = 8

Boat of the Week: This Newly Renovated 345-Foot Gigayacht Has a Pool That Turns Into a Dance Floor

Architects and Fashion Designers Are Penning Yachts, and It’s Changing How They’re Made

The first thing that catches the eye is a large waterfall at the stern, spilling over from the 23-foot-long main-deck infinity pool. It’s a theatrical nod to the yacht’s exterior transformation, which saw 26 feet added to the steel hull at the stern and seven feet to the forward deck line. The extra length accommodates the owner’s request for a large pool aft that is designed with a raising dance floor. It also gives the vessel, originally launched in 2000 as  Al Mirqab , a sleeker, more modern profile. The next owner, F1’s Force India boss and now fugitive Vijay Mallya, renamed it Indian Empress . He was known for throwing extravagant parties aboard.

The 345-foot Oceanco 'H2' is emerging after a three-year refit as a brand-new yacht.

“The yacht was very boxy before, so we cut the entire superstructure off and rebuilt it to be as sleek as possible,” Jonathan Bevan, Reymond Langton’s exterior designer, tells Robb Report . Bevan also designed H3 ’s two “mini-me” Compass tenders—a 36-foot limousine and 34-foot open sportboat—that look like the mothership.

The owner’s deck and upper-deck aft areas—once used to host large parties for the opening night of the Monaco Grand Prix—have both been reduced in length. Coupled with a new enclosed gym on the sun deck, it gives the profile a more balanced look.

Bevan also eschewed straight lines in favor of contoured bulwarks that run the length of the yacht. “We’ve added a rolling-wave undercut that reflects the surface of the sea below and gives a sense of motion when the boat is moving,” he says.

Another noteworthy feature is the 33-foot-long video corridor. It links the welcome lounge and bar with the main salon, as well as concealing the tender bays on either side. On our tour, a floor-to-ceiling aquarium was displayed, but it can be used for all types of media, from videos to artwork. In the welcome lounge, an LED screen or “tech window” is linked to a camera pointing outside to give guests the choice between a virtual view or normal TV.

The interior has been taken back to the bare skin and designed anew. “A refit of this scale has not been done before. We wanted to create something dramatic and unrecognizable that can be enjoyed by family as well as for entertaining,” Reymond Langton’s interior designer, Elizabeth Kozlova, tells Robb Report .

Custom art runs throughout the yacht, including leather wall panels by Helen Amy Murray, woven metal by Sophie Mallebranche and decorative glass by Bernard Pictet. A palette of ivory and taupe tones combines with fiddleback sycamore, light oak, soft nubucks, and Foglizzo leathers that contrast with bronze and nickel detailing. The en suites and day heads are dressed in light marbles, such as Calacatta Vagli, Crema Delicato, and backlit quartz.

In the main foyer, a round Bianco Lasa marble floor frames a glass elevator that runs from the main deck to the bridge deck. The dedicated owner’s deck has a full-beam stateroom with walk-in wardrobes and an en suite. A private beauty salon and a study can be used as two additional guest cabins. The owner’s lounge has sofas, casual dining for 14, three Lasvit glass chandeliers, and two backlit infinity mirrors on the same level.

The yacht’s gross tonnage increased from 3,045GT to 3,521GT during the rebuild, which gave the designers more room to play with in an already high-volume vessel. They responded with high ceilings, more accommodation to sleep the 32 crew, and a full-beam VIP that serves as a second master, with private use of the bridge deck aft. Six guest cabins on the main deck bring total guest accommodations up to 20. On the lower deck is a destination spa with a hammam and sensory shower, a hair salon, and massage and beauty rooms.

Powered by triple, military-spec MTU 20V 1163 TB93 diesel engines for a massive 30,000 combined horsepower, H3 hit 30 knots during sea trials. That’s an impressive top end for a yacht this size, but then again, everything else about the new H3 is extraordinary.

The profile of the AES 50 slightly angled from the bow

AES Yacht presents new 50m superyacht concept

Turkish shipyard AES Yacht has presented new designs for a 50-metre superyacht with a gross tonnage under 500 GT.

Named AES 50, the displacement yacht has been envisioned with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and would be powered by twin Caterpillar engines to deliver a top speed of 14.5 knots trimmed back to 11.5 knots cruising.

The yacht's modern exterior has been designed in-house, defined by a grey hull with elongated curves and winged segments of the superstructure that serve as viewpoints for guests and crew on the bridge deck.

The AES 50 features an open waterfront beach club area with a recessed dip pool flanked by lounge chairs. The design suggests that part of the swim platform will be able to lower hydraulically into the water, allowing easy access into the sea. From the beach club, twin sets of steps lead up to a glass-fronted cockpit seating area that benefits from shade from the deck above.

The yacht offers a circular dining area for ten on the upper deck aft, with sliding doors leading into the interior skylounge. Forward of this deck is a small Portuguese bridge area, with tender storage found even further forward in the recess of the foredeck.

Meanwhile, the sundeck plays host to a forward pool, shaded seating area and bar, plus an open lounge area on the aft.

AES 50 would have a sizeable nine-metre beam, a draft of 2.5 metres and accommodation for up to 12 guests.  Interior renderings are yet to be released.

AES Yacht has worked on a number of other projects at the moment, including construction on 68-metre Ice , which resumed construction last year under the name Days . She is currently listed for sale with Frase r .
