How To Apply Toplac Plus

• Application Method :  Brush, Roller, Spray
• Number of Coats: 2-3
• Dry Film Thickness per Coat: 1-1.5 mils (2-3 wet mils)
• Coverage: 587 sq. ft/gal.
• Application Temp: 41°F Min. / 95°F Max.
• Thinning: Add 10% 2333N reducing solvent for brushes and 216 Special Thinner for spray
• Cleaner: 333 Brushing Liquid

Note: Avoid applying late in the evening as condensation can cause a loss of gloss during overnight cure. Do not use in temperatures below 41° F

Surface Preparation & Application

• Previously Painted Surface:
• In poor condition remove all previous coatings and prime the substrate, referring to the primer/undercoat technical datasheet for further preparation instructions.
• In good condition wash down with a suitable detergent, rinse with fresh water and allow to dry
• Abrade with 280 - 320 grit paper and remove sanding residue
• Wipe with Brushing LIquid 333 and allow to dry completely.
• All Substrates:
• Prime with a suitable primer or primer/undercoat

Application Methods:

• Sand the undercoat smooth with 120 - 400 grit wet or dry paper
• Remove dust with a dust wipe
• Apply 2-3 coats of Toplac Plus with 8-16 hours depending on ambient temperature (refer to the table above)
• Ambient temperatures should be between 41° F and 95° F
• Do not exceed 10% thinner by volume

International Toplac boat paint review: 5-year test results show how it lasts

In 2017 Richard Hare painted his Golden Hind 31’s sheerstrake with International Toplac single pot boat paint. 5 years later we find out how well it's performed...

Almost exactly five years ago my Golden Hind 31 Keppel ’s tired and exhausted blue sheerstrakes were given a full four-coat paint system. Up to then years of exposure in the Med and other sunny places had taken a serious toll.

I was curious to know whether a quality single-pot boat paint would perform as well as a more expensive and complicated two-pack paint. To this end I opted for International Toplac.

The advantages that I saw in a one pot paint was its simplicity and lower cost. At the time I concluded my repaint article by saying that I’d return with a verdict on its performance in five years time. So, here we are. Was it any good?

Well, it has performed brilliantly. It looks as good today as it did when the job was completed back in October 2016. The gloss retention is very impressive and there is no peeling away at the edges or corners.

I followed the application guidance to the letter – two coats of undercoat and two of topcoat and all the usual preparatory work and application techniques. Rollers were used to apply the paint and this was tipped off immediately by brush.

And if you’re wondering if the paint system has had a cushy time of it over the five years, let me put your mind at rest. It has been brutal. First though, Keppel has never had a winter boat cover during her 23-year life, and this latest five years is no exception.

In the summer of 2017 Keppel pottered around in her East Anglian home waters. It was a dismal summer, so UV was minimal.

Summer 2018 was a different kettle of fish. It was a sweltering hot summer in the UK, and hotter still in northern France. Two and a half months of continual sunshine followed her as she made her way to the Med through a north/south canal route.

And let’s not forget, dark blue gets very hot in sunlight. Fry and egg on it? I wouldn’t discount the idea. Keppel was then laid up in a Camargue boatyard, a region known for fierce winter Mistrals and driving grit, quite a lot of which managed to find its way into the cabin.

Summer 2019 was spent cruising the Cote d’Azur and Provence. In mid-September she was laid up in Aigues Mortes.

And then Covid hit us all. Keppel was left to fend for herself for one month short of two years. She remained unattended on a hot, sunny hard standing. The temperatures would have been extremely high during the two summers.

Anxious expectations

And so it was with deep anxiety that Janie and I returned to sort her out in early August 2021. We were astonished to find that the International Toplac paintwork was as good as new.

Keppel then completed summer 2021 with a passage of the Canal de Deux Mers (the Midi and the Garonne). Again, it was a hot, almost cloudless summer.

Further punishment was endured by heavy fender rubbing as she climbed to the top of the Canal du Midi through many fierce filling locks.

Am I impressed? You bet I am. I would not hesitate to use International Toplac again. As to the question of whether it is as good as two-pack – well, seeing I can’t find anything to fault in it I have to conclude that, to date, it cannot be improved upon.

Damage repair

Early on in the five year test, while still in the UK, a neighbouring visitor yacht grazed Keppel ’s sheerstrake with its bow anchor, probably while reversing out of an unfamiliar berth.

This minor damage was very easily repaired and the result is invisible. Mixing a small quantity of two-pack paint would not have been quite so easy.

Each winter we lather boat wax onto the blue sheerstrake and leave it unbuffed. It’s a trick I picked up in the South of France many years ago. This affords a useful degree of protection on all fronts. We remove it with fresh polish when we return in spring.

International Toplac Plus is a premium gloss marine enamel with UV filters, for all substrates for use above the waterline. It is easy to apply by roller without the need for tipping (laying off).

International Toplac Plus is the replacement for International Toplac for 2022. The change over started in October 2021 and Toplac will be phased out from October 2021 until February 2022.

Toplac Plus, combined with International One Up Primer Undercoat will deliver the best in class gloss finish International offer. With the One Up Primer Undercoat, there are fewer preparation coats required as One Up works as both the primer and the undercoat, on GRP or gelcoat only 2 primer coats are required and then 2-3 coats of Toplac Plus.

Toplac Plus Colours

The colour range is very similar to the original Toplac range, two brand new colours have been introduced; Oyster White and Flag Blue.

Some colours have however disappeared, mainly the greens and blues such as Norfolk Green, Woodward Green, Squall Blue and Danube Blue.

Toplac Plus Sizes

Toplac Plus is available in 375ml tins, 750ml tins and 2.5L tins . There is a limited range of colours available in the 375ml and the 2.5L tins.

Thinning Toplac Plus

Toplac Plus can be thinned with up to 10%  Thinners No. 100 to ease the application of the paint by a paint brush or roller.

Applying Toplac Plus & One Up Primer

Toplac Plus should be applied on top of International One Up Primer Undercoat , when you have applied the last coat of One Up primer sand it with 400 grade wet or dry sand paper , degrease the surface with Pre-Clean and allow to dry.

Why is Toplac Changing to Toplac Plus?

Due to some of the chemicals used in International Toplac paint being banned for use by DIY customers, International are reformulating Toplac and changing its name to Toplac Plus.

International Toplac Plus Marine Gloss Topside Paint

Toplac Plus is a premium, high durability gloss enamel that stays glossy for longer being the replacement for the well known International Toplac topside paint.

This silicone alkyd premium gloss topcoat loved by all boaters around the world, Toplac Plus is easy to apply by brush or roller without the need of tipping on surfaces such as GRP, Wood, Aluminium and Steel.

International Toplac Plus also features excellent flow characteristics due to its unique chemical structure. A true topcoat preferred by most do-it-yourself boaters and professionals in the boating industry.

Why is Toplac changing to Toplac Plus?

In order to comply with the regulations, Toplac paint's formula had to be altered so that is no longer using some of the chemicals banned for use by DIY customers. The new improved formula does comply with these regulations and can still be used by Do-it-yourself boaters and professionals.

How to apply Toplac Pus Gloss Enamel?

Apply by using a brush or roller if you are not a professional. Spraying is recommended for professional use only.

For bare surfaces is recommended to apply between 2 to 3 coats. If you are only touching up or reviving the surface one coat should do the job.

It’s recommended to be applied early during the day in dry conditions and avoid doing it in the late evening as the condensation can cause a loss of gloss.

How long should I wait between coats?

When the temperature is around 5°C - Minimum of 24 hours with a maximum of 4 Days 15°C - Minimum of 16 hours with a maximum of 3 Days 23°C - Minimum of 8 hours with a maximum of 2 Days 35°C - Minimum of 6 hours with a maximum of 1 Day

5°C - 6 Hours 15°C - 3 Hours 23°C - 2 Hours 35°C - 1 Hour

Above Waterline Scheme For Toplac Plus and One UP System (Primer & Undercoat)

Bare Wood - Sand smooth using 80-180 and then 280 grade paper and remove all dust with a cloth. Allow drying before priming with One Up.

Complete system: 4 x coats of One UP + 2 - 3 coats of Toplac Plus

Steel - Degrease the steel surface with a solvent or cleaner. Clean thoroughly and allow to dry before priming.

Complete system: 3 x coats of One UP + 2 - 3 coats of Toplac Plus

Aluminium -  Degrease the surface with a solvent or super cleaner. Use a sander (60 - 120) aluminium grade paper and then clean thoroughly. Allow to completely dry and apply the One Up system within 8 hours.

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) - Similar to the aluminium or steel surfaces, degrease using a powerful solvent or super cleaner. Sand well using 180 - 220 grade sanding paper and then clean thoroughly.

Complete system: 2 x coats of One UP + 2 - 3 coats of Toplac Plus

Toplac’s silicone alkyd formula is extremely smooth-flowing, producing a very high gloss. Superior UV filters combine with this to produce a surface which will retain its colour and gloss up to three times longer than conventional gloss paints.

Preparation

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACE

• In Good Condition: Wash down with a suitable detergent, rinse with fresh water and allow to dry. Abrade with 280­320 grade (grit) paper.
• In Poor Condition  : Remove all previous coatings and prime the substrate. 

PRIMING: Substrate preparation is covered separately on the primer datasheet.

BARE WOOD : Sand smooth with 80­-180 and then 280 grade paper. Remove sanding dust by brushing, dusting and wiping. If wiping with solvent, allow to dry completely before applying recommended products. Prime with Yacht Primer.

STEEL : Degrease with solvent or Super Cleaner. Gritblast to Sa 2½ near white metal surface. If gritblasting is not possible, grind the metal surface with 24­36 grit abrasive discs to a uniform, clean, bright well roughened metal surface 50­75­microns) anchor pattern. Use angle grinder on small areas. Clean thoroughly and allow to dry.Prime with International  Yacht Primer.

ALUMINIUM : Degrease with solvent or Yacht Line Super Cleaner. Sand well using 60- ­120 grade (aluminium compatible) paper. Clean thoroughly and allow to dry. Prime with International Yacht Primer as soon as possible (within 8 hours).

GRP : Degrease with solvent or International Super Cleaner. Sand well using 180­-220 grade paper. Clean thoroughly and allow to dry. No primer required. ­ Apply International Pre­Kote direct to GRP.

AGED/WEATHERED GELCOAT S: Due to increased porousness, the risk of solvent/moisture entrapment is increased, leading to potential blistering. To reduce this risk 3 coats of International Interprotect are recommended to seal the gelcoat. Interprotect must be overcoated with One UP prior to topcoat application.

ALL SUBSTRATES: Use Pre­Kote undercoat

Sand the undercoat smooth with 320­400 grade (grit) wet or dry paper. Remove dust with a dust wipe. Apply 1­3 coats.

• Mixing:  Stir well before use.
• Thinner: Thinner No.1 (Brush/Roller), Thinner 910 (Spray application ­ PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY.).
• Thinning: Add up to 10% Thinner No 1 to ease the application by brush/roller. The thinner quantity can be adjusted with climate conditions.
• Cleaner: Thinner No.1.
• Ventilation and Humidity Control: Apply in dry, well ventilated conditions.

Toplac is a silicone alkyd premium gloss marine enamel, which will retain colour & gloss longer than conventional gloss paints. For use above the waterline, it can be used on hulls and decks as well as for interior use, and has excellent flow characteristics so you can achieve a brush-mark-free, professional finish. Available in a range of bright colours, it delivers a high-gloss shine and rich, lustrous colour and contains UV filters for increased durability.

Standard Returns

If you are not entirely happy with your purchase, we will exchange or refund your goods in full, provided that the items are returned within 14 days of receipt.*

Please check the condition of goods on arrival - we are unable to accept goods damaged during shipping after 14 days.

Returned goods must be packaged securely, with all original packaging undamaged and in a saleable condition i.e. shoe boxes must be in the same condition as when received.

Goods must be unused and security seals intact.*

If you would like to return goods because they were ordered incorrectly or if clothing does not fit, return postage will be at your expense. If you would like us to replace the goods with another size or colour, we will charge carriage on the replacement.

Please be aware that some navigational and safety products may be dated, and as such a full refund may in some cases not be possible. If you are purchasing dated navigational charts we suggest you contact us for more information.

Faulty Goods

If you receive your goods and believe them to be faulty, please contact us straight away with a brief description of the problem. If we require you to return the product for a replacement, we will send you a pre-paid Royal Mail label for delivery back to us. Unfortuantely we cannot send the courier back to collect the items.

Returning goods to Force 4 is easy!

• Please contact us by ringing 0345 1300 710 or email on [email protected] . This way we'll be able to determine whether you would like to return the product for a refund or whether you'd like to exchange the product. We are unable to process the return of faulty goods that we're not expecting.
• We'll then give you a returns number. This returns number will need to be clearly marked on the outside of your parcel so it can be identified on arrival. Please note, failure to mark a returns reference number on the outside of your parcel may result in a delay in processing your return.
• Don't forget your proof of postage, just in case!
• Once we receive the item we'll be able to proceed with a refund or an exchange.

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river. 

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

• East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
• Completed in 2017
• Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

• South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
• Completed in 2015

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

• 339m tall, 75 floors
• Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

• Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
• Completed in 2009
• Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

• Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
• Completed in 2007
• Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

• 255m tall, 54 floors
• Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

• 239m tall, 60 floors
• Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

• 130m tall, 26 floors
• Completed in 2001
• Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Afimall is Moscow’s largest entertainment and shopping complex, home to 450 shops, cafes and restaurants, a cinema, and a virtual-reality game park. The shopping centre is located in the central section of Moscow City, and a cinema and concert hall are currently under construction there.

What’s nearby?

Sechenov Botanical Gardens: The botanical gardens of the First Moscow State Medical University was created for students’ training and research in 1946. Today it is open for free visits, and is home to a large arboretum.

Park Krasnaya Presnya: This park belonged to the Studenets estate of the Gagarin princes. It is a monument of 18th and 19th century landscaping, with Dutch ponds, ornate bridges, and tree-lined alleys. There are also sports facilities, sports equipment rental, and cafes.

Sheremetyevo (SVO) Airport

There's a very neat and nice post office opened 24 hours in Arrivals zone (2nd floor), where among other things you can browse the interent for 200R ($8) / hour, use a printer, and charge your mobile phone. There's also wi-fi in TGI Friday's restaurant (2nd floor, Arrivals). There's a bar and a good grocery store in the Arrivals area, both opened 24 hours.

A few restaurants are scattered in the departures area (after the check-in counters), the only ones worth attention are Tajmahal restaurant (located next to Terminals 6-9, upstairs) and the Irish bar - the favourite among transit passengers. If you end up waiting for your flight, it’s better to go to one of these two places (by the way, you can plug in your laptop there).

The departure and arrival area outside of the check-in area have a few 24-hour food and souvenirs shops, pharmacy, cafes (a meal for about $10, drink - $2-$5), bank and exchange offices. The airport is located about 15 km to the north outside of Moscow, 5km to the right from Moscow - St Petersburg highway.

The new Terminal 3 was opened recently and it's much better than SVO2, but not all the flights arrive there, yet. 

Sheremetyevo SVO Arrivals / Departures

Traveling to / from sheremetyevo airport  , sheremetyevo - moscow with an aeroexpress train.

The best way to get to / from Sheremetyevo. The new train express (since 2009) takes you directly from Sheremetyevo Airport arriving to Moscow center (Belorusski train station). It takes about 35 minutes and the ride costs about 400R (€8). You can buy your ticket using an App or just before the departure. The train station for the Aeroexpress train is connected to the airport, so it's only about 10-15 minutes walking once you leave the luggage claim area.
