Simple trapezing

A trapeze allows the crew to stand on the side of the boat, suspended from a wire attached to the mast. This provides a lot more leverage and is less tiring than hiking out, as the crew's lower back is fully supported by the trapeze harness. It is also enormous fun.

CLIPPING ON

If necessary, adjust the length of the trapeze wire so it's easy to get hooked on while sitting on the side of the boat (see p.137). When you attach the trapeze ring, use the adjustable straps of the trapeze harness to pull the hook tight to your body, The hook mounted on a bar helps spread the load to the sides and back of the harness. The shape of the ring ensures that it will not fall off the hook if you keep it under under tension.

IHold the ring up when you pull it onto the hook. If necessary adjust your harness so that the hook is near your center of gravity at around hip level.

Slip the hook on to the ring as the boat starts to heel. Lean back in a hiking position to put the trapeze wire under tension. Hold the handle on the wire with your front hand, and use your feet to start pushing yourself out.

The front foot goes out first on to the side deck, with your weight on the wire. Keep hold of the jib or spinnaker sheet with your other hand, to help balance your position and keep the sail trimmed.

4 Follow immediately with the back foot, and relax into the pull of the harness in a crouching position.

Straighten your legs and let go of the handle. Face forward with the front leg supporting your weight and the back leg providing balance. Flex your knees with the movement of the boat, and enjoy the sensation of flying over the water.

SIMPLE TRAPEZING

TACKING ON THE WIRE

During a tack, the helmsman must give the crew sufficient time to come in off the wire, unhook, and then get out on the new side, with good communication throughout the maneuver. At the same

3 The crew moves just ahead of the helmsman during the tack, ducking under the boom, grabbing the new trapeze ring, then turning forward and hooking on.

time, the crew has to keep control of the jib, to help the head of the boat around. Experienced crews might try a faster tack, going "wire to wire." This is done by catching the handle to go right out on the new side before hooking on.

2 The helmsman steers carefully into the wind while the crew bends both legs to come in off the wire, reversing the procedure for going out. At the same time she will need to pull in the sheet to control the jib.

4 The crew starts to go out on the wire, trimming the jib sheet on port tack. With experience, a crew can be out on the trapeze before the helm has sat down on the new side.

5 While on the wire, be alert for the unexpected and be prepared to come in and unhook quickly in case of a capsize.

Which Trapeze Harness to Buy

For many the middle of summer is the time to try something new. For those wanting to try trapezing it's an ideal time because if it all goes wrong the water is warmer and the sunshine will help the situation. It's also the time when other sailors are out on their boats in mass and you're likely to be able to grab a ride.

If you are looking for a new trapeze harness then this article will hopefully help you gain the key facts about the current harnesses we have in stock.

Our number one recommendation would be to borrow someones and try it, some harnesses can be uncomfortable and the last thing you want to do is end up with something sitting in the corner which can't be worn. For anyone at our club who comes and asks us about trapeze harnesses we straight away lend them one of ours to try on the water. Even if you don't like that specific harness it gives you a good idea of the type you might like.

This trapeze harness from is for men and women. Magic Marine have given the Wing trapeze harness a nappy harness design.

The harness is made from ripstop nylon polyester with fibre glass battens in the back area and a reinforced kevlar seat.

Again this Magic Marine Pro Racing trapeze harness is for men and women. It is made from ripstop nylon polyester but has the addition of comfortable neoprene leg straps and a reinforced kevlar seat. This is ideal for protection when you're sliding around the boat or jumping in and out onto the wire.

It features a stainless steel spreader bar which runs across the front to spread the weight for your comfort. The spreader bar comes complete with a quick release hook mechanism so you can get untangled if you need to. You simply pull one tag and the hook falls away from the harness.

Zhik T2 Trapeze Harness

The Zhik T2 Trapeze Harness is one of the most popular among performance sailors and features a unique velcro adjustment system not seen anywhere else. This allows flexibility and adjustment to the mm while also providing excellent support for you, the sailor.

The material around the crotch stretches and padded shoulders give amazing comfort. By being a nappy style and the velcro system this means you have one strap to tighten up the height, that strap can easily be tucked away so you don't have excess straps while sailing.

I have to say, we sail Tornado catamarans and this is our choice, it's so comfortable and lasts forever. Mine is now on year 8 and has seen some hard racing with long tough events and it's still going strong.

ON SELECTED MODELS

All models outfitted with an Foiling Package ( FCS or   Flight Control System for short ) are ready for full foiling – during your sail, specialized hydrodynamic daggerboards combined with upwards pressure make you get a controlled ‘flight’, meaning your whole boat will be above the water, rather than in it. Make alterations on the water during your flight to find the groove you are looking for and fly over water to leave others behind.

These so-called  Foil sets are designed to fly in a wide range of weather conditions, to make competitive catamaran sailing accessible to even more sailors, and are built to meet the highest safety standards. A real treat for the more, or a little less, experienced sailors.

Using the best possible manufacturing techniques available, we’ve obtained maximum strength with minimum weight using autoclave technology, curing the pre-impregnated carbon/epoxy at 120 degrees Celsius at an atmospheric pressure of 6 bar. It will put you miles ahead of any fleet in terms of performance and joy.

Harnesses support your back when you are standing in trapeze on a sailing boat, for example the 29er/49er, Laser Vago or Laser Bahia. Sailcenter sells different types of harnesses for various dinghies. A Seat harness is suitable for… sailors where you only wear pants without back panel for maximum freedom of movement. A Skiff harness, ideal for 29er / 49er sailors, is very light and does not have straps with buckles but straps that are adjustable with Velcro so that you don't get caught up in anything. The regular trapeze harness has an adjustable back that is very comfortable and ensures optimal hanging comfort.
