Newcastle was a welcome sight for 200 sailors as their first taste of land for 2024
The City of Newcastle is stop number six for the 2023-2024 Clipper Around the World Race.
Newcastle locals turned out in force to greet over 200 sailors as they arrived after spending Christmas and New Year at sea. Racing in eleven identical yachts, the sailors are competing in Leg 4 of the 2023-2024 Clipper Around the World Race, and set sail from the West Australian port of Fremantle on the 19th December 2023 bound for the East Coast of Australia.
First held in 1996, the Clipper Around the World Race is an international yacht racing event that brings together non-professional sailors from all over the world to circumnavigate the globe. After undertaking rigorous training, the competitors set off on the 40,000 nautical mile (74,080km) race which is split into eight legs, visiting fourteen ports on six different continents.
The award-winning Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is the host for a stopover on leg 4, the Australian Coast to Coast leg which takes in Fremantle (WA), Newcastle (NSW), and Airlie Beach (QLD) before heading to China. Leaving Fremantle, the fleet set off on a 2900 nautical mile journey rounding the southern tip of Tasmania, before a tactical battle up the coast including Christmas and New Year wrapped in wet weather gear as the summer storms made life interesting.
Over 54 nationalities are represented in the fleet with 13 Australians amongst them, and they were all very pleased to reach Newcastle.
Laura Ayres, Managing Director of Clipper Ventures, is based in Gosport in the UK but was onsite in Newcastle to greet the sailors as they arrived. “Newcastle is ideal as a stopover port for the race. A great midway point between Fremantle and the Whitsundays, and excellent facilities” she said. “We have received lots of community support, and a level of professional backup that makes the city an ideal hub for ocean racing.”
George Coldham, a 29-year-old software consultant from the Northwest of England, is a competitor doing the full circumnavigation on the yacht UNICEF . “I live two miles from the wettest town in England so somehow spending 11 months on a boat seems almost normal” he said laughing.
Coldham is looking forward to having some time to relax. “Stopovers in places like Newcastle in summer make it worthwhile though. Everyone at the club has been very welcoming and helpful with information about local activities. We have around three days of boat maintenance, but then our time is our own. I have already been in touch with the local rowing and swimming clubs, and then I’m off for a trail run at Blackbutt Reserve.”
Local Newcastle sailor Bronwen Crosby will be taking it all in as she will be joining the Zhuhai entry for the Whitsundays to Vietnam-China leg. Bronwen learnt to sail at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club’s sail training academy and inspired by Lisa Blair, another Australian sailor who has competed in the event, set her sights on the offshore adventure. “After reading Lisa’s book telling her story of becoming the first woman to sail solo around Antarctica, I made up my mind to join the Clipper Race. I can’t wait to get onboard!”
Declan Clausen, Deputy Lord Mayor City of Newcastle, was an honoured guest at the celebration to congratulate the placegetters, presenting them with their pennants and welcoming all the sailors of the Clipper Around the World Race to the city.
The Deputy Lord Mayor also praised the organisation that was needed to be the host city saying that he “wanted to acknowledge the amazing partnership that has been formed between the City of Newcastle and the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.”
Congratulating the competitors and the Clipper Around the World Race organisers, the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club Commodore Barry Kelly said at the celebration “Few people can talk about sailing around the world. Something drove you to the sport of sailing. There is nothing like it.”

About the Clipper Round the World Race
The Clipper Race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other. With no previous sailing experience necessary, before signing up for the intensive training programme, it’s a record-breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht.
The brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world, the first Clipper Race took place in 1996. Since then, almost 6,000 Race Crew from all walks of life and more than 60 nations have trained and raced in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race; the only race in the world where the organisers supply a fleet of identical racing yachts (eleven), each with a fully qualified skipper and first mate to safely guide the crew.

About Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club
The Club was incorporated on the 19th of April, 1994, and since then, has grown to be a nationally recognised name in both sailing and sailing development. NCYC has gone through various phases of development, beginning with the completion of four marina arms, boatyard, and commercial centre. The second phase of development saw the completion of two more marina arms, and the completion of the Clubhouse in 2008. In 2021, the Club completed stage three, doubling the capacity of its Clubhouse.
As far as Australian yacht clubs go, NCYC’s history is relatively short, yet still boasts as one of the newest yacht clubs in Australia, and certainly the newest with significant club and marina assets.

Revealing reveals – The new AC75 launches
Welcoming newcastle, nsw to the clipper race circuit.
Making its debut on the Clipper 2023-24 Race, Newcastle, New South Wales will welcome the intrepid Clipper Race crew as it hosts the global sailing event for the first time.
Race Crew battling the rough conditions during the last edition of the Clipper Race.
Featuring as part of Leg 4: The Australian Coast-to-Coast Leg, crew will race around the south of Australia from Fremantle to Newcastle, facing the testing conditions of the Roaring Forties, known for its strong winds and huge rolling swells, before racing up the East Coast and docking at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.
Before arriving in Newcastle, Race Crew will face a real mix of tricky conditions. Mark Light, Clipper Race Director explains: “Heading around the south of Australia, strong depressions will give tremendous winds and big seas which in turn will create some fantastic downwind surfing conditions for the Clipper 70 Race yachts and their crews. Once around Tasmania, the fleet will head north and do battle with the notorious Bass Strait, forever wary of the weather phenomenon known as the ‘Southerly Buster’ which is prevalent in these parts, as they head towards the port of Newcastle, NSW for the very first time in Clipper Race history. After a challenging race the crew will be ready to enjoy the amazing beaches, bars and great hospitality that the stopover will offer.”
Expected to arrive at the NCYC between 1-4 January 2024, Race Crew and Supporters will get to celebrate the New Year in Newcastle’s bustling metropolis, with everything from stunning beaches and street art to iconic ocean baths, cool cafés and designer hotels.
The NCYC, which has grown to be a nationally recognised name in both sailing and sailing development, is no stranger to hosting large sailing events. NCYC was the first Club to win Australian Sailing Club of the Year twice, first in 2019 and again in 2022, and the creators of SailFest, reviving the Newcastle Regatta, one of Australia’s oldest regattas.
Race Crew, and Supporters can expect a warm Aussie welcome at NCYC, and the opportunity to soak up the region’s best beaches, bars and spectacular Hunter Valley wine region which is just a short drive away and renowned for excellent wineries in stunning surroundings. Newcastle’s biggest attractions are its beautiful beaches and harbour, and the small and friendly population of less than half a million makes Newcastle a laid-back place to visit as the crowds are fewer and the pace is slower.
After several days of soaking up everything the city and coastline has to offer, the Clipper Race fleet will depart the NCYC on 10 January to take on the final race of Leg 4 up to Airlie Beach, Whitsundays ready to be greeted by tropical waters and beautiful scenery.

Most southerly route of the Clipper Race
Published on December 18th, 2023 by Editor -->
The 11 teams competing in the 2023-24 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will begin Leg 4 of their circumnavigation on December 19 from Fremantle, Australia.
The fourth leg is divided into two stages, with the first part sending the fleet on a 2,500nm course around the south of Australia up to Newcastle, New South Wales. This race is set to be a real test with breezy conditions predicted.
“Because of the weather conditions from the beginning of this race, it’s looking to be quite a tough start,” noted Deputy Race Director Dale Smyth. “Traditionally here there are a lot of southerlies that blow, so it’s quite a hard beat right down until the fleet gets past Cape Leeuwin.
“Even then, it’s still a challenge trying to break through an area of high pressure until they get far south enough to start getting some westerlies. Once the teams are down in the south, they should get some good running conditions.
“The fleet will be going to the most southerly point of the circumnavigation, as the teams round the bottom of Tasmania, and then across the infamous Tasman Sea, where they can expect the infamous ‘southerly busters.’ After this, there will be a very tactical sail up to Newcastle against the East Australia Current.”
While some people do the full circumnavigation, there are 72 new crew joining the Clipper Race for Leg 4, which will see the fleet sail into two iconic Aussie ports: Newcastle, NSW for the first half and then finish in Airlie Beach, Queensland. Among the crew are thirteen Australians who will be sailing around their home country.
The fleet has an arrival window of January 1 to 4 in Newcastle, Australia.

About the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race: The Clipper Race was established in 1996 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968-69. Australian Yachting Championships & Newcastle SailFest Regatta
Elite fleet set to contest australian yachting championships at newcastle sailfest regatta.
An elite fleet of offshore racing thoroughbreds is assembling at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) this week ahead of the Australian Yachting Championships starting Friday, April 5, as part of the annual Newcastle SailFest Regatta.
Included will be a dozen tp52s, the largest ever gathering of these grand-prix yachts in australia, plus two mixed divisions that boast a number of highly credentialed state and club champions..
Race organisers at the NCYC believe it is the strongest offshore fleet ever to race in the region.
“We’ve held the Australian Yachting Championships previously but the event has grown in stature since then, and we’ve never had such a strong TP52 presence,” NCYC CEO Paul O’Rourke says.
“Secret Men’s Business [a TP52] has been trucked here from South Australia to defend its national title and will face Marcus Blackmore’s brand new Hooligan, along with a number of other top-flight contenders in that class.
“At the moment the Friday forecast is looking challenging but we’re looking forward to seeing some world-class racing both off the coast and inside the Harbour over the weekend.”
Weather-permitting, there will be an in-harbour start for the TP52s and offshore divisions from around 11.30am on Saturday, accompanied by a firing of Fort Scratchley’s 80-pound gun. Queens Wharf will provide the best vantage point as the yachts leave the port for an offshore passage race before returning to the finish.
“The recent Clipper Round the World Yacht Race start sparked incredible interest, and I think the Australian Yachting Championships start could surpass it. It’s a bigger fleet and the yachts are faster,” Paul O’Rourke adds.
“There will be an absolute buzz around the club too, and visitors are welcome to come and experience the excitement for themselves.”
As part of SailFest activities, spectators can also catch the historic ‘Cock of the Harbour’ race run by Stockton’s Port Hunter 16ft Sailing Skiff Club, with high-performance catamarans and dinghies vying to be crowned the fastest sailing boat on the harbour. Start time is around 2pm.
Families can also get involved on Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7, as kids aged 6 to 12 are invited to try sailing for free under the supervision of qualified instructors. The boats will launch immediately in front of the NCYC Clubhouse at 95 Hannell Street Wickham between 10am and 2pm.
The Australian Yachting Championships will kickstart a month-long sailing spectacle in the Hunter as the yachts then head to Sail Port Stephens , also run under the auspices of the NCYC. Australia’s second-largest regatta, it spans three weekends from April 15 to May 5 and includes the iconic Commodore’s Cup, NSW Yachting Championships, and an off-the-beach series for dinghies and Windsurfers.

Sydney Newcastle Race to decide Summer Offshore Series winner
The final event of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s (CYCA) Summer Offshore Series, the Sydney Newcastle Race, is set to challenge crews Saturday 20 March.
The Sydney Newcastle Race will be roughly 100 nautical miles and will send crews from Sydney Harbour to a virtual mark off Anna Bay before they head back for the finish off Newcastle. In the event of light conditions, the course can be shorted to a 65 nautical mile version which is Sydney to Newcastle direct.
The three-race Summer Offshore Series was added to the CYCA’s Sailing Program for the first time this year and has so far been a resounding success. The series came to life in response to a hampered racing calendar through 2020 due to COVID safety precautions and offers crews the wonderful opportunity of additional blue water style racing.
“The Summer Offshore Series has been a fantastic way for the Finn crew to come together and get some really good experience prior to kicking off our Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore campaign,” said Janey Treleaven, CYCA Treasurer and owner of the Beneteau First 45 Finn .
“We are really excited for the upcoming Sydney Newcastle Race as it’s a destination race and, being a 7 pm start, we’re looking forward to finishing during the day and not drifting through the heads!
“[CYCA] Youth Sailing Academy alumni Jess Grimes has once again pulled together a 50 per cent youth crew from the Youth Sailing Academy who are also looking forward to gaining some great blue water experience before we take on the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race in July.”
Kim Jagger, owner of the Sydney 38 Cinquante , is another owner who is relishing the opportunity of additional offshore racing.
“My crew and I were attracted to competing in the Summer Offshore Series in the first instance because the 2020 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race had been cancelled and we felt we had been denied our annual rite of passage of a race south,” said Kim.
“Once the series began, it took on its own logic. It is self-contained, It falls in between Hobart and the Winter Series, and it wasn’t just a one-off 90 miler to finish off the summer. Even though we were entered in the CYCA’s Ocean Pointscore, we felt the Summer Offshore Series suited our boat as it was already set up for long-distance ocean racing.”
Of the tricky conditions experienced in the two races so far, Kim said, “Despite the wind dying out for smaller yachts in both races so far, we have enjoyed the challenge of the series.”
Many of the Series’ podium positions are currently separated by just one or two points so everything will come down to the Sydney Newcastle Race. You can catch all the action on CYCA’s website , Facebook page and Instagram as pictures and video from the rail are sent in by competitors.
The CYCA would like to thank Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) for their ongoing support and as the race’s Finishing Partner. The CYCA and NCYC enjoy reciprocal Membership rights and Members are welcomed to visit each Club anytime.
NCYC is located in the heart of Newcastle Harbour at 95 Hannell St, Wickham, and offers an array of wonderful facilities including a 180 berth marina. The Club is open for coffee at 8 am, serves breakfast from 8:30 to 10:30 am and the bar is open from 10 am.
The Summer Offshore Series so far
The Summer Offshore Series began with the Flinders Islet Race in early February 2021 which tested crews in flukey, gusty conditions. Matt Donald and Chris Townsend’s TP52 Gweilo and Carl Crafoord’s Cookson 12 Sail Exchange were the best on the day, clinching the IRC Division 1 and 2 honours respectively.
The Virtual Mark Race was the next in the series and marked a first for CYCA with teams racing around virtual way points rather than fixed marks. CYCA Director Sam Haynes’ TP52 Celestial won IRC Division 1 and Sail Exchange was triumphant once again in Division 2.
Click here to view current overall pointscore standings .
Given the success of the series so far and the positive feedback received, the CYCA will be looking to continue and build on the Summer Offshore Series into 2022 and beyond.

ANDOO COMANCHE
The John Winning Jr-skippered behemoth is out to defend her line honours title and has dominated the lead-up to the race. Of the four 100ft SuperMaxis competing, she is the best suited to heavy, down-wind conditions.
Runner-up for line honours at the last three Sydney to Hobarts, LawConnect appears to be peaking at the right time and has been singled out by Andoo Comanche as the biggest threat to her title defence.
SHK SCALLYWAG
Hong Kong-based Scallywag is something of an unknown quantity, having been out of the water and in the workshop for 18 months leading up to October. She's since returned 500kg slimmer and will fare best in lighter conditions.
LEADING OVERALL HONOURS CONTENDERS
Since placing third overall in last year's race, Caro has claimed an impressive victory on handicap at the FastNet Race, an off-shore event of similar length to the Sydney to Hobart. She is one of eight TP52s, a highly competitive model, in this year's race.
Sam Haynes' Celestial would be going for a rare 'three-peat' had a time penalty not cost her overall victory in 2021. Celestial overcame a broken main sail to win last year's contest by 15 minutes on handicap.
Bigger than the TP52s at a little more than 72 feet long, this mini-maxi has been the most dominant of the smaller boats in the lead-up to the Sydney to Hobart and is hoping to build a lead in rough, upwind conditions.

The Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race is back on the waters again for its 76th year. About 150 vessels departed from Newport Harbor Friday and sailed past the Balboa Pier, where onlookers marveled at the scene.
The race, as it does every year, began in Newport Beach. Two tracks are available for those participating — one to San Diego and the other to Ensenada. Weather predictions, according to the Newport Ocean Sailing Assn., which organizes the race, indicated the race would be smooth sailing on Friday.
With relatively gentle winds in the morning, wind speeds were expected to pick up from the west and remain steady through the evening.
The Newport to Ensenada race first began in 1948.
As of Friday afternoon, the Taniwha appeared to be leading in the race to Ensenada. It was followed by the Bottle Rocket and the Fast Exit II.
