Attiva con una gamma che spazia da 37 a 103 piedi, Viking Yachts fu fondata nel 1964 dai fratelli Bill e Bob Healey che ancora oggi conducono l’azienda con lo stesso spirito degli esordi, coadiuvati dalla nuova generazione rappresentata da Bob Jr. e Pat Healey .

Sin dall’inizio, l’intenzione dei fondatori è stata quella di ascoltare gli appassionati di pesca sportiva per arrivare a realizzare le loro barche ideali . Oggi questo spirito anima ancora le due generazioni coinvolte, nella convinzione di potersi sempre migliorare.

Per poter perseguire tale obiettivo c’è bisogno d’investimenti costanti sia per aggiornare le strutture produttive sia per progettare e realizzare nuovi modelli.

Non è a caso che, solo in ricerca e sviluppo,  il cantiere investa ogni anno circa 8,5 milioni di dollari . Come risultato, in soli due anni, sono riusciti a presentare ben 10 nuovi modelli, già prodotti e ben voluti dal mercato, soprattutto americano, dove i pescatori sportivi sono una categoria molto attiva e alla quale sono dedicati numerosi eventi di grande risalto.

Viking nel 2017 ha varato 79 unità registrando una crescita costante negli ultimi cinque anni. In parte dell’Europa e in Italia il cantiere è rappresentato da Sno Yachts di Francesco e Andrea Pirro , azienda storicamente impegnata in questo specifico segmento di mercato al quale ha sempre dedicato molte energie, ottenendo riscontri che le hanno permesso di diventare un punto di riferimento nel Mediterraneo per questo tipo di mezzi.

In occasione del salone di Fort Lauderdale ci siamo intrattenuti con Joe Schwab , vice presidente del settore vendite di Viking , al quale abbiamo chiesto informazioni sull’andamento del mercato per Viking. «Negli Stati Uniti il mercato è in forte ripresa ed è evidente su tutti i modelli della nostra gamma, inoltre, l’intera rete vendita sta lavorando molto bene e questo significa poter fare programmazione”.

“Per quanto riguarda il mercato italiano siamo molto contenti dei passi che Sno Yachts ha fatto di recente per concentrarsi maggiormente su Viking, del resto i risultati che stanno continuando a ottenere sono positivi e anche qui (a Fort Lauderdale n.d.r.), hanno ricevuto clienti dall’Italia che sono venuti a vedere i nostri ultimi modelli. Oltre che dalla qualità delle barche, il successo della nostra azienda è dato dal valido supporto di assistenza che siamo in grado di offrire in tutto il mondo».

Come già accennato il must di Viking è migliorarsi sempre , sia nell’assistenza che nella qualità. In merito alle tecniche di costruzione, Joe ha affermato: «Negli ultimi 10 anni ci siamo concentrati nell’impiego della tecnica dell’infusione per la realizzazione dei nostri fisherman e dei nostri motor yacht. Questo ci ha permesso di ridurre le emissioni inquinanti nell’ambiente, ma soprattutto ha portato ad avere un controllo molto accurato dell’intero processo e dei materiali impiegati, potendo preventivare con estrema precisione i pesi e garantendo gli assetti desiderati. Alla fine, abbiamo barche più performanti e meglio rifinite».

Viking ha appena lanciato il nuovo 93’ Motor Yacht che ha avuto un immediato successo. Da qui, è partita la produzione di un nuovo 100’ Cockpit Motor Yacht e di un 103’ Motor Yacht . È stato presentato il nuovo 44’ Open e poi è arrivato il  Convertible 44’ .  Il futuro del cantiere è mantenere l’attuale assetto produttivo con tre cantieri attivi per un totale di 88.000 metri quadrati dedicati alla produzione, impiegando 1.870 addetti diretti .

A proposito degli sviluppi futuri, Schwab ha affermato: «Crediamo molto anche nel mercato mediterraneo, dove Viking ha riconquistato l’attenzione che a mio avviso merita, grazie a Sno Yachts. I nostri sforzi sono principalmente dedicati agli sport fisherman come da nostra tradizione, anche se molti nostri clienti non li usano per pescare, ma per andare in crociera con la famiglia. Devo dire che è molto bello ricevere in cantiere i nostri armatori e ascoltare i loro bisogni o semplicemente la descrizione del loro stile di vita. Questo ci ha permesso di realizzare molti esemplari destinati al mercato mediterraneo con modifiche specifiche dedicate agli armatori dell’area» .

In effetti, uno dei motivi per cui Viking Yachts ha saputo conquistare il mercato europeo, e quello italiano in modo particolare, è proprio l’aver saputo ascoltare le richieste dei fratelli Andrea e Francesco Pirro , titolari di Sno Yachts, tese a ottenere barche concettualmente molto americane, ma capaci di assecondare le abitudini tipiche del nostro mercato.

Tanto per citare un esempio, la posizione della cucina, chiusa e non a vista sulla dinette, poi gli arredi delle zone all’aperto e tanti altri piccoli dettagli nelle finiture e nelle scelte dei materiali, che hanno permesso agli appassionati di pesca sportiva italiani ed europei di trovare in Viking il mezzo ideale. A questo dobbiamo aggiungere la qualità delle carene, grazie alle quali affrontare condizioni meteo impegnative per un armatore Viking è un gioco da ragazzi.

Viking’s New 90-Foot Sportfish Yacht

Viking Yachts made more than a few anglers happy with its Viking 92 model, delivering 21 of those boats to new owners in a span of seven years. But then, a few years ago, eco-minded regulations came into play that would have required additional equipment on board—equipment that was problematic in so many ways that the builder decided to design a new model instead, one that was just a bit smaller to avoid the regulatory size cutoff. That new sport fishing model is the 90C, which premiered at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2023. As of early April 2023, 16 of the 90Cs had already been sold.

“We designed it right under 24 meters,” says Pat Healey, president and CEO of Viking Yachts. “We took 13 inches out of the beam, 27 inches out of the length, we got it under 24 meters, and we gained outstanding performance. The boat cruises at 32, 33 knots, tops out at 38 full of fuel. We see 40 knots every day with it—that’s a big increase in speed over the 92. The 92 is an awesome, incredible boat, but this boat, it’s seven years of building 92s—everything we learned from doing that, we took it and put it into this boat.”

The 90C’s features include a 203-gallon transom fish box/livewell, a pair of 103-gallon insulated in-deck fish boxes (with optional refrigeration), a Seakeeper 35, and a cockpit sole that’s reinforced for a fighting chair, rocket launcher or table. Inside are six staterooms and seven heads, along with a full-size stackable washer and dryer.

Hull No. 1 of the 90C is being used as a demo boat on the tournament circuit. It was headed to the Bahamas as this issue went to press, with Healey pleased about its performance: “It just does things like a 70- or 80-foot boat, but you have the accommodations of a 92.”

Viking Yachts History

Viking yacht company celebrates over five decades: a hull of a story.

Not too long ago, though, the picture at Viking was anything but rosy. When the double-whammy of a nationwide recession hit in 1990, followed by the introduction of a federal luxury tax in 1991, the company went from 1,500 employees in two plants to just 80 employees in one plant. In general, the marine industry went into a tailspin that resulted in massive plant shutdowns and a significant rippling effect of related closures as ancillary businesses, such engine manufacturers, equipment producers and other vendors saw their markets dry up.

The Healeys borrowed working capital and invested their own money to keep the company afloat. Bob Healey also was instrumental in organizing a national, grass-roots campaign to fight the tax based on a loss of jobs issue. In taking the industry lead, Bob organized busloads of out-of-work boat builders that converged on Capitol Hill. Other demonstrations took place on a regular basis around the country to plead for support in repealing the tax. In Rhode Island, a boat was set on fire aboard a barge in Narragansett Bay as a symbol of protest. It took better than two years, but by 1993 the luxury tax was history and Viking was poised to flex its muscles as boat buyers returned to the market. It is interesting to note that Viking's decision to remain open, despite dismal sales attributable to the luxury tax allowed the company to tool up for new models. Thus, when the tax was lifted, Viking roared to the front line leapfrogging over its competition firmly establishing Viking as the dominant builder in its class.

In dealing with an owner base that is constantly seeking new and larger models, Viking produced the Custom 105, built in Viareggio, Italy, to Viking's specifications by Versilcraft. The new yacht made its premiere at the 42nd Annual Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in October 2001 and was awarded the National Marine Manufacturers Association Innovation Award at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2002.

In February 2002, Viking opened a new service facility in Riviera Beach, Florida, near Palm Beach, to accommodate Viking owners who bring their boats south for the winter. The new facility features slips for in-water work, as well as land storage to handle larger projects and outfitting. A 125-foot by 150-foot shed with 50 feet of clearance will accommodate boats with tuna towers for indoor work.

In December 2002, the Bass River Marina, adjacent to the Viking Yacht plant was bought back by the Healeys and reflagged the Viking Yachting Center. It was at this marina where the Healey brothers started their maritime careers. The brothers sold the property in 1964 when they devoted all of their energies to boat manufacturing.

In early 2003, Viking formed two new companies, Atlantic Marine Electronics (AME) and Palm Beach Towers (PBT). Atlantic Marine Electronics is based at the Viking Yachting Center (with a satellite office in Riviera Beach) and is responsible for the sophisticated electronic navigation packages, which are installed aboard Viking Yachts and Viking Sport Cruisers. Based at the Riviera Beach, Florida, facility (with additional service bays at the Yachting Center), Palm Beach Towers designs and builds tuna towers and fabricates other aluminum and fiberglass components for Vikings and other yacht brands.

At a very special breakfast presentation on October 29, 2003 during the International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition & Conference in Miami Beach, Florida, Viking Yachts’ Bill and Bob Healey were recognized by their peers and inducted into the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) Hall of Fame for their selfless contributions to the recreational marine industry.
