DEEP DRAFT PERFORMANCE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

A key benefit of the variable draft keel is not only shallow draft opportunities but also enhanced performance from a deep high aspect ratio keel when fully lowered.

In practise, the boat is stiffer as a result of the improved righting moment, therefore carrying her sail better than other yachts and carving her way efficiently to windward in a seaway. The keel’s aerofoil shaped cross section, with weight concentrated at the tip, is optimised for sailing to windward, allowing you to point as high as 30° apparent with minimal leeway.

The variable keel geometry allows the keel to be set at any position between fully raised and lowered, enabling the keel to be set and optimised according to your point of sail.

An example of this is having the keel fully raised when sailing downwind.

Southerly’s trade mark variable draft keel enables the draft to be reduced to as little as 0.84m (3 feet). The opportunities are endless for accessing and exploring remote anchorages, harbours and inland waterways worldwide, without the draft restrictions imposed on other yachts.

Shallow draft capabilities can save precious time when entering or leaving locked marinas or even crossing a shallow bar in some harbour entrances. When approaching shallow waters, the keel can simply be raised to avoid grounding, and killing time for a safe height of tide.

GENE R A L The Southerly 42RST is supplied with CE certification is built to EU specifications and conforms to RCD, design category A.

The hull is guaranteed against osmosis for 5 years from the date of manufacture

HULL CONSTRUCTION Heavy duty composite moulding, hand laid to Southerly’s precise laminating system, incorporating an anti-print through and moisture barrier, multi-axial, and unidirectional reinforcements with vinylester laminating resin and isophthalic gelcoat. The keel box is an integral part of the hull lay-up and sandwich construction stiffening runs the entire length of the hull topsides. All main bulkheads are bonded into the hull at main lay-up stage along with a stiffening grillage of transverse frames and longitudinal stringers. The engine bearers are an integral part of the hull structure.

DECK CONSTRUCTION Hand laid composite sandwich construction, with carbon reinforcements. All strong points and stress areas are strengthened with carbon reinforcements. The deck is bonded to the hull through the entire length and to all main bulkheads resulting in a strong and integrated unit. • White gel coat (RAL9010) • Integrated GRP toe rail reinforcing the hull to deck joint • Moulded non-slip finish to ring deck and coachroof • Access to chain locker from foredeck • Foredeck stowage locker

VARIABLE DRAFT KEEL The fixed ballast is an iron casting which acts as a grounding plate and stiffener for the keel and housing assembly. It is fitted into a recess in the hull in the area of the keel box with stainless steel bolts. The aerofoil shaped keel is cast iron and incorporates a stainless-steel pivot at the leading edge.

The keel is raised and lowered by a dyneema pennant and hydraulic ram powered by an electrically driven pump with a hand operated back-up.

All hydraulics are easily accessible for maintenance. • Keel control and gauge showing keel position fitted at the helm • Removable stainless-steel pin, positioned to enable the keel to be locked in the ‘up’ position • Manual rocker switch at pin position for fine adjustment

There are a total of four (plus two) berths, with two in the fore cabin featuring a convertible centerline or V berth arrangement, two in the aft cabin and a two in the saloon (seating conversion). History of Southerly

Founded in 1973, Southerly is a prominent British yacht maker known for its superior build quality, safety and performance. The company's conception coincided with the surge in popularity of sailing in the UK, at a time when boating was transforming from being a largely professional pursuit to wide-spread leisure activity. Based in West Sussex, the company started producing boats designed by the talented naval architect, John Bennett, and quickly established a loyal customer base with their lifting keel designs that offered both deep water performance and shallow draught versatility.

In 2009, Northshore Yachts, infamous for their Vancouver and Fisher ranges, took over the Southerly brand and incorporated it into their operations. With this acquisition, Southerly was not only able to continue production, but also to further invest in research and innovation. And even today, each Southerly yacht still embodies the original principles set by the founding team, creating exceptional boats with matchless performance and build quality.

SOUTHERLY 110 lifting keel SAILING YACHT FOR SALE.

This sailing vessel is in truly immaculate condition and benefits - inter alia - from a January 2023 pre-sale survey that the surveyor describes as “ pretty perfect ” in conversation and in glowing terms in the report as well.

'Reprieve', a stylish Rob Humphreys designed cruising yacht (cruiser) has been throughly and fastidiously maintained above & beyond normal standards, and in many aspects has been upgraded.

For example: the original engine was replaced and upgraded in 2008 with a Yanmar 3JH 39HP diesel. This is driven through a Purbeck marine 20 x 14 propellor. The engine hours are 795. She has been serviced regularly by Cutler Marine of Emsworth (last time in Dec. 2022)..

Similarly standing rigging was replaced two years ago and running rigging is removed each winter before being laundered and stored awaiting the new season.

‘Reprieve’ is supported with a full dossier of all essential documentation and manuals. These have been viewed by the broker and were seen to be correct.

The Southerly 110 embodies the established features of the Southerly range, which have proved popular over many years. The modern hull and rig set very high standards of performance, versatility and sheer good looks which appeals to family and cruising yachtsmen alike.

The Southerly 110 with her aft cockpit, plumb bow line and twin rudder configuration, combined with her sail plan (an optional taller faster rig was specified at build stage), makes her a fast, fun and exhilarating yacht to sail.

Whitlock direct steering, combined with the twin rudder arrangement gives instantly responsive steering, making helming this yacht a real pleasure. Even when the wind increases and gusts attempt to push her off course, the hull form and deep draft of the Swing Keel enables her to stand up to the wind and carry her canvas, whilst the twin rudders give exceptional directional stability and control.

The unique Swing Keel provides deep draft performance (deeper than most yachts), for powerful windward performance. As you go onboard the Southerly 110's traditional quality of build shines through. Good all round views, a spacious saloon, open galley, raised chart table, forward cabin and a large aft cabin are particular features on this yacht.

'Reprieve' was surveyed by H.F Bettle & Co surveyors in January 2023 . She received a fabulous condition report and valuation which can be shared upon request.

'Reprieve', in 2010, was retro-fitted with a new engine as an upgrade.

'Reprieve' is now fitted with a Yanmar 3JH4E (rated at 39 HP and up from the previous 30 HP engine). This engine has completed 780 hours. Such diesel engine have a life expectancy of in excess of 8000 hours when maintained correctly.

The engine has been serviced regularly by Cutler Marine Engineers based at Emsworth Yacht Harbour. Cutler Marine are approved Yanmar specialists. The engine was fitted by Purbeck Marine of Poole.

The engine is controlled through a Yanmar B panel with water, temperature and oil pressure gauges. An exhaust alarm is also fitted.

The engine runs a shaft drive with 20 x 14 three-blade propellor.

SHALLOW DRAFT FREEDOM, DEEP DRAFT PERFORMANCE

Even when the wind increases and gusts attempt to push her off course, the hull form and deep draft of the Swing Keel enables her to stand up to the wind and carry her canvas, whilst the twin rudders give exceptional directional stability and control. In fact, the Southerly 110 is so light on the helm she will sail herself most of the time.

​The unique Swing Keel provides deep draft performance (deeper than most yachts), for powerful windward performance. The keel can be raised to just 2'4'' for shallow draft freedom, allowing you to sail in coastal areas and inland waters. As with all Southerlys, the yacht will also dry out and sit upright.

Deep Draft Performance

The Variable Draft Keel provides a deep draft which gives a greater stability due to the increased righting moment. In practice the boat is stiffer, carries her sail better and carves her way efficiently to windward in any seaway. The Variable Draft Keel’s aerofoil shape is highly efficient – and allows you to point high (30°) with minimal leeway.

Shallow Draft Freedom

At the touch of a button, the keel can be raised, to sail in very shallow waters. This means you can extend your cruising grounds considerably. Raising the Variable Draft Keel, gives you access to many locations both for pleasure and for safety.

There will always come a time in a Southerly's life where the keel will require some maintenance, and where better to come than the original home of the Variable Draft Swing Keel. We can carry out all your requirements, from basic keel inspection and pennant adjustment (which we recommend every 5-10 years) to a complete removal and refurbishment for the older Southerly models to bring the specification up to modern standards.

KEEL REMOVAL & REFURBISHMENT FOR OLDER SOUTHERLYS  

With over 35 years experience of building Southerly Swing Keel yachts, our expert service is unrivalled.  

For a complete keel refurbishment, we will disconnect and remove the necessary equipment and components to gain internal access to the keel and its housing. We will then remove the keel bolts, hydraulic ram bolts and the pennant.  After the keel and grounding plate are separated from the boat, we will clean the hull recess, inspect and repair and damage if necessary. The keel will then be cleaned and shot-blasted for rust removal, then primed and anti-fouled. Bearings, nylon blocks, rubber seals, steel plate and pennant will be replaced and the refurbished keel will be installed back into your yacht, all as good as new.

Luxury yacht Ferretti 530 was very keen to undertake in collaboration once again with AYT – Advanced Yacht Technology, Ferretti Group Engineering Division and Studio Zuccon International Project . The compact dimensions, 16 meters long and almost 5 meters wide, allow the 530 yacht to deliver grand Italian luxury and cruising immersed in such comfort until now unheard of in a yacht of this size.

Ferretti 530 yacht boasts three revolutionary innovations: the full beam master cabin with chaise longue and two large open view windows that make it a real suite at sea level bathed in light, tones and the natural essences of teak.
