Mirage 28 as a first boat?

Hi all! Am in Singapore and found for sale a rare (in these parts) 1979 mirage 28 that had been sailed all the way down from Belgium. Thinking of purchasing it as a first boat. Any thoughts on suitability? From what I've read on this site they seem to be very well constructed - old school thick GRP hand finished hulls which are resistant to osmosis, sail confidently at a decent clip, and good size accommodation for class. Would you agree with the comments I've read which say a well constructed old school GRP boat like the mirage may better stand the test of time if well looked after despite age than newer thinner GRP hulled boats? Also, on electrics and piping - bilge, water, toilet etc - is the setup robust yet straightforward if I want to undertake an overhaul after purchase? Tks in advance for any advice. Much appreciated. best, ong

Our experience is that they are a sturdy boat with fittings that have lasted over 30 years and has been in the family ownership for 25 years. She has survived one swamping and is in regular use by my sons in the Irish sea throughout the summer including the occasional race, my bones prefer warmer climes sailing these days. The cores that we took out on ours when installing through hull fittings was just over 25 mm. Are they solid GRP? IIRC the top is cored. Make sure you walk up and down it to check for movement and groaning noises. Click to expand...
Many (all??) were home fitted out or fitted out by local yards, so the quality of the interior set up and fittings varies enormously Click to expand...

Been thrown a curveball - the vessel needs to be re-registered as I'm Singaporean and can't own a Luxembourg registered craft. Singapore registration requires that the vessel be 17years of age or less. Been looking at cayman or isle of man as alternatives - any recommendations? Isle of man looks good except for vessel tonnage certification requirements where verifiers are all in Europe. Any tips?

Great boat, I have had three from Thames Marine. Strong & with good sailing capabilities (including the bilge keelers) and with excellent heavy weather abilities. Good luck.

Very nice yacht, an excellent choice as a first-timer. The bilge-keel version I used to sail leaked through the keelbolts. It is fixable but quite expensive so do check before buying. I've no experience of foreign registration, but far more yachts are registered in UK Channel Islands (Guernsey/Jersey) than IOM. There are several companies who arrange this, easily found by a Google. You might enquire of one of them. Generally its done by larger yachts to avoid taxes - it may not be economic for a small yacht.

Sounds good! May be you can get an agency to do a proper check of the boat!

Very nice! The one I sailed was that colour, "Winnie the Pooh", bilge-keeler, new I think in 1979.

calvong said: Hi folks! Here she is. Have agreed to purchase her pending paperwork. Her outgoing owner is a legend who sailed her from Belgium to Singapore via Biscay-Madeira-Atlantic-Panama-Galapagos-Pacific-French Polynesia-PNG-Philippines-Brunei-Singapore. A true adventurer and amazing chap. It's quite an honour to take her over. Really excited at the prospect of owning mirage 28 sail #68 - quite sure many evenings / weekends will be spent onboard either sailing or doing her up Thanks for the advice everyone! It's my first boat so there will be questions aplenty and I think I'll be pretty active on this forum. Click to expand...

Mirage 28 feltham

The mirage 28 feltham is a 28.33ft masthead sloop designed by david feltham and built in fiberglass by thames marine (uk) since 1977..

The Mirage 28 feltham is a moderate weight sailboat which is under powered. It is stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a short water supply range.

Mirage 30 (29?) or Great Lakes boat

flyingwelshman

  • Add to quote

I would appreciate insight on a Mirage 30 (29?). I don’t know the year, but I think mid-to-late eighties. I haven’t looked closely at the boat, but it belongs to my dock-neighbour and it seemed as though he was meticulous about its upkeep. I currently have a Nash 26 – 1979. We like the boat very much: it is roomy enough for the two of us for extended cruising. I am just not very confident in its suitability for handling some of the conditions into which I sail (or get caught sailing). I sail on Georgian Bay and am frequently out in winds above 25 kn. I have been out in winds above that, although usually that is the gust speed. I frequently single-hand out to Hope Island and beyond, where I have encountered 2 – 3 metre waves (being a lake these are short, steep waves, not long, rolling ocean waves). I want a boat that is more durable and designed more for those conditions than the Nash. I think that a heavier boat would make a big difference. The Nash weighs in at just over 5,000 lbs. I sailed a 32’ Oday last summer and could really feel the difference in the weight. The Mirage weighs in at about 7,000 lbs. I have considered a Catalina 30 or a CS 30 as well as these weigh in at 10,000 and 8,000 lbs. I think that the standing rigging is heavier gauge on these boats as well. This is another thing I am concerned about. The Nash is a good cruising boat, but I don’t feel that it is robust enough. Another main consideration is the berthing. I think that most of the boats in the 30 – 32’ have comparable V-berths (i.e. barely adequate for 2 adults to sleep). I generally sleep on the settee in the salon while my wife usually has the V-berth to herself. What is your opinion on the quarter-berth arrangement of the Mirage. I have looked at the plans for the boat but have trouble visualizing the set-up. I know I won’t have a problem actually looking aboard the neighbour’s boat to see the reality, I just wondered if anyone has any first-hand experience with sleeping in the quarter-berth. We usually do a two-week cruise on the Bay each year and most weekends are spent on the boat, so comfortable sleeping is important. I spend a lot of time single-handing. I think that the Mirage 30’ should be suitable for this. Any comments? We currently have a shoal-draft (3’6”) on the Nash and love the accessibility that it allows us to some of the smaller anchorages around the Bay. The Mirage has a 4’8” draft. This will somewhat limit our access, but I think might be worth the trade-off for seaworthiness. If you have any other insight into to Mirage, please don’t hesitate to offer it up. We had hoped to spend this summer researching boats in the 30 – 32 foot range that would be suitable for the type of sailing I’ve described. I would appreciate any recommendations that you can make with regards to other boats that might suit us. Ideally our budget is up to about $40,000.00 CDN. I have seen many boats in the size range we are looking at priced quite a bit lower. Any advice will be much appreciated. Dave

Problem here is that Mirage made a 30 (Robert Perry) and a 29 (euro/French design) so the first chore is to determine which one you're looking at.

The seller is calling it a Mirage 30, so let's assume it's the Perry design for now. I'll confirm this with him. What does that do to the recommendations or lack thereof? Thanks

Check the menu on the left: Used Sailboats in central Canada Also, the Mirage 30/32 is the same boat except the 32 has a reverse transom.

Mirage 29 owner chiming in... Can't comment on the Mirage 30 but I have owned a Mirage 29 for 5 years and can attest to the quality of the workmanship from the Mirage yard compared to many other boats of the same era. I previously owned a C&C 29 MkII that I sailed on Lake Ontario and the Mirage is built much better. Boat is 24 years old and not one crack in the gelcoat, even around the stanchions. Was not the case with the C&C which developed leaks around the glued side windows. The Mirage 29 is well behaved and does not tend to become overpowered as easily as similar 30'- boats. Actually, C&C 29 was really tender compared to the Mirage. Interior is comparable to the modern boats with a very decent aft cabin and galley arrangement. The only time you notice any issue is when you move forward as the coach roof drops quickly forward of the mast so you have to duck while approaching the v-berth. Ideal boat for a couple. Looking forward to many more years cruising this boat as I can't find anything newer that would offer much more (except for major loan payments):laugher . Cheers, Moxie Skipper

Mirage 29 I have a beautiful Mirage 29 in Lion's Head harbour that has been rigged out to sail south but has never gone. It is exceptionally well built with all of the best parts including a Volvo diesel. Mine is a 1987 model - the French design with aft cabin. The one drawback is head height. If you are over 6 feet tall this is not the boat for you. I am over 6 feet and am looking at selling the boat for that reason only. It is fast, solid and reliable - therefore more expensive than others in that size range but still considerably well below your $40,000 goal.

You will find a huge difference in performance. A friend had a Nash 26 and I found it to be a very slow boat.

Flying Welshman-Mirage Having sailed a Nash 26 for a few years, you might find a Mirage 29/30 a little too spirited for your liking. To answer your question: Mirage 30, Robert Perry design, 8000 lbs, 10.5 feet beam, 23.75 feet on waterline. As boat heals, picks up more waterline length. 15hp Yanmar diesel, later models 18hp Volvo. They have Whitlock wheel draglink steering with good feel almost like steering with a tiller (yuck!) Boat loves to heal, stiffens up when rail a foot from water. Will do 6.7 knots on a close reach, and is fastest just ahead of beam reach. T Cockpit very roomy , seats six comfortably for socializing at the dock. Mirage 29, French design, shorter mast, smaller rig, but still quite quick. Less tender than 30. V berth smaller than 30, but aft cabin a little larger. Volvo 18hp diesel. Cockpit smaller on 29, with bench seats. You must crawl over cockpit seats to get ahead of the wheel. Gelcoat and glass generally good on Mirage yachts. I saw a Mirage 30 with a full enclosure on Georgian Bay this summer. It looked quite roomy. Hope this helps.

Mirage Pilot House 32 Classic

  • By By Dave Lear

The fact that a relatively small company such as Mirage Manufacturing has been building custom sport fishing boats for more than 30 years speaks volumes. Three decades is an impressive track record in the boating industry, but when you have a popular hull design, a responsive production team and strong customer satisfaction, what else do you need? How about a new model, one that is better suited for inclement weather and comfortable cruising? That’s the basis for this Florida company’s new Pilot House 32 Classic.

“We’ve sold a lot of sportfish boats in the South,” says Mirage president Ken Fickett. “With the Pilot House 32 we hope to attract more buyers here at home, but also from the cooler waters of California and the Northeast. It’s a great platform for fishing and cruising.”

The Pilot House edition is based on the company’s 29- and 32-foot center-console hulls, and is available with both inboard/outboard or outboard power (for outboards, the LOA is stretched to 34 feet). The construction is the same for both versions – composite, hand-laid hulls with full foam-core construction and bonding that completely fuses the deck, bulkheads and longitudinal stringers for strength and rigidity. With a dry weight of 6,000 pounds, a bow entry of 56 degrees, and a 22-degree transom deadrise and flat outer chines, the Pilot House is extremely seaworthy and soft-riding. Hydraulic steering and trim tabs are standard, and the hull comes with a ten-year warranty.

Our test boat was powered by a single 285-hp Volvo KAD300 diesel with counter-rotating drives, and it was very responsive to the throttle. At a cruising speed of 24.7 mph at 3250 rpm, the light chop on Florida’s Sarasota Bay was hardly noticeable, while at wide-open throttle our top-end was 34.8 mph. The boat left a very clean wake at trolling speed, and maneuverability was nimble in reverse. Subsequent factory tests with a 32 powered by twin 265-hp diesel engines produced speeds in the high 40s at cruise and a top-end of 53 mph, fully loaded with tower.

Routine maintenance is easy with the electric engine-hatch lift, and there’s enough room for quick access to the pumps, batteries and battery combiner. With a 230-gallon fuel capacity and a 3.5 mpg burn at cruise, the 32 has a range exceeding 700 miles. Additional factory tests with twin 265-hp diesel engines produced speeds in the high 40s at cruise and a top-end of 53 mph, fully loaded with tower.

“We really think that the KAD300 is the best choice,” Fickett says. “You can head to the Bahamas on Friday, fish all weekend and come back on Monday without ever having to stop for fuel. But if you prefer twin diesels or outboards, we can accommodate that also, and the boat will perform as well or better than anything else in her class.”

With its impressive range capabilities and comfortable pilot house (you don’t have to shout while underway), this boat can easily handle unexpected weather or forays to distant grounds. Twin in-deck, insulated fishboxes are standard; a 35-gallon live well/tackle center, salt water washdown and coaming pads are optional. The roomy forward casting deck comes with enclosed dry storage, but Mirage’s custom capabilities allow substitutions such as overboard-draining, insulated fishboxes or a sun lounge. A forward insulated icebox with cushion is also available as an add-on.

The Pilot House configuration is very cruising-friendly for a crew of four. Our test boat had the Classic interior option, which includes an insulated icebox, cutting board, sink, microwave and Kenmore refrigerator. An optional bench seat offers storage underneath. The helm was cool and pleasant with the door open, but air conditioning is also available with the shore-power option. The Classic interior package includes mahogany trim and a teak-and-holly sole for a retro look.

The belowdecks layout features a full forward vee-berth, an oversized double mid-berth and an enclosed head with a 70-gallon fresh water system, shower and macerated head with holding tank. A pump-out upgrade is available.

If you like to brave the elements and fish when others are sitting at the dock, check out the new Pilot House 32. It’s another example of why Mirage will undoubtedly be building boats for decades to come. Mirage Manufacturing Company, Gainesville, FL; (352) 377-4146; www.mirage-mfg.com .

Mirage 2700 (UK)

Mirage 2700 (UK) is a 25 ′ 5 ″ / 7.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Feltham/Thames Marine and built by Thames Marine starting in 1979.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

It is thought that the MIRAGE 2700 is based on the hull of the Feltham designed MIRAGE 28, but with a raised deck and truncated stern. Similar to the LEISURE 27SL. Available with a fin keel, draft: 1.44m / 5ft

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5

Designed by David Feltham, the Mirage 28 is a solid, well constructed Thames Marine production boat. A masthead GRP twin keel sloop, she is like a much larger version of Thames Marine's first successful yacht, the Snapdragon 23**, and of course, her accommodation is more commodious.

The Mirage 28 feltham is a 28.33ft masthead sloop designed by David Feltham and built in fiberglass by Thames Marine (UK) since 1977. The Mirage 28 feltham is a moderate weight sailboat which is under powered. It is stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser.

  8. Review of Mirage 28

The Mirage 28 is equipped with a finn keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.40 - 1.50 meter (4.59 - 4.89 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
