Hamilton Island has a long and rich sailing history and is the home of internationally renowned AUDI Hamilton Island Race Week – Australia’s largest offshore sailing regatta held at the end of August each year.

Many cruising yachtsmen and super yacht owners base themselves at Hamilton Island Marina while they explore the 74 islands of Whitsundays. The marina itself caters for every type and size of vessel. There are 205 berths, all well protected in the case of bad weather and all have access to first-class marina facilities.

Hamilton Island Yacht Club: An Iconic Contender

Hamilton Island Yacht Club

Sporting what is arguably the most magnificent clubhouse of any yacht club in the world, and with a membership of about 25, Australia’s Hamilton Island YC is quite obviously not your average club. HIYC, which has assumed the role of Challenger of Record for the 35th America’s Cup, is privately owned and operated by the Oatley family through a company called Hamilton Island Enterprises. There are no flag officers, no committees, and the commodore is Bob Oatley, owner of the island.

The Oatleys took ownership and management of Hamilton Island 10 years ago and have since transformed it into one of the world’s top resort destinations. Situated 900 miles north of Sydney and about 14 miles off of the east coast of Australia in the middle of the Whitsunday Islands, Hamilton Island has the closest access to the Great Barrier Reef.

The island has become one of Australia’s top sailing destinations due largely to the vision of 85-year-old Bob Oatley. The patriarch of the Oatley family—a self-made wine mogul—is himself a keen sailor, and the Oatleys are well respected in top racing circles for their success with the supermaxi Wild Oats XI . Oatley’s son Sandy describes his dad’s early but enthusiastic entrée to the world of sailing: “Dad started sailing when he was nine or ten in skiffs. His first boat was a canoe that he converted, put a mast on it, and I think he used a sheet as a sail.”

The former HIYC was run out of a local pub, but Oatley senior wanted a real clubhouse that would become an iconic landmark and so commissioned Sydney architect Walter Barda for the job. “It was designed so that when you looked at it from space, the roofline would look like a starfish, plus we incorporated sterns, rudders, and such to support a nautical theme,” says Sandy Oatley.

The club is also the aquatic entrance to Hamilton Island, welcoming you when you arrive by boat or land by plane. Operationally, it runs much like a regular yacht club; occasional races during the week serve a small population in and around Hamilton Island, and a couple of major regattas are held annually, including Audi Hamilton Island Race Week.

“There are always people going through the club, whether they are arriving to the island to pick up their boat and go sailing, or stopping in for dinner,” says Iain Murray, the race director for AC34 who was also involved in the construction of HIYC and the renovation of the island following its purchase by Oatley. With his close ties to the Oatleys, it was no surprise when Murray was named Team Australia’s CEO in November.

The HIYC is also a part sponsor of the Australian Olympic sailing team, which puts perspective around Oatley’s decision to enter the Cup arena. Australia stashed more Olympic golds in sailing in 2012 than any other country, and the team holds its championships at HIYC because of the area’s ideal tidal and wind conditions.

“Our young guys go through the Olympic program, then head off to sail for other countries, like in the America’s Cup,” Sandy Oatley explains. “We’re thinking, ‘We need to have an Australian boat. We’ve got the sailors; we just don’t have a team.’”

As soon as you enter Villa 21 ,  it's clear you are somewhere special. This waterfront villa provides a sophisticated, relaxing and private environment with amazing uninterrupted views across Dent Passage to Shute Harbour and beyond. The large outdoor area has its own plunge pool with sun lounges and couches to accommodate all your guests. The designer interiors and state of the art appliances provide all the comfort and convenience you will you need for a fantastic holiday.

What makes this home special?

The Yacht Club Villa complex occupies a superb location at the end of Front Street, behind the iconic Hamilton Island Yacht Club. Villa 21 is located near the end of the front row of villas in a private and quiet location.

Villa 21’s waterfront location offers magnificent uninterrupted views of Dent Passage and beyond from the living room and balconies, bedrooms and outdoor pool area.

Australian Design.

Designed by renowned architect Walter Barda, this villa maximises the spectacular view. Large windows allow plenty of air and light to flow through the open spaces. Sliding glass door to the main balcony allow you to enjoy indoor / outdoor living all year round. It also includes stunning interiors creating and aesthetically pleasing and practical villa.

Arrival Service.

As a guest of the Yacht Club Villas, you will be met at the Airport on arrival, with assistance provided to collect your buggy at the airport and delivery of your luggage. Upon arrival to your Villa you will also receive a complimentary welcome hamper.

High-end interiors.

Enjoy a state-of-the art gourmet kitchen with Miele appliances and a full range of kitchenware, Nespresso coffee machine, a separate laundry, fully ducted air-conditioning to all levels and quality sound system. The main balcony has an outdoor table seating 8 plus casual seating and BBQ while the spacious outdoor area has sun lounges and outdoor couches to compliment the private plunge pool. Complimentary Wi-Fi is also included.

Pool and gardens.

Villa 21 offers a private plunge pool and has a cliff-top outdoor area overlooking Dent Passage where you can relax in privacy. As part of a gated community it also shares beautifully landscaped gardens with sprawling lawns that open to a large, shared lagoon pool overlooking a private beach accessible only to Yacht Club residents and guests.

There are four bedrooms in Villa 21. The master suite on the upper level includes a king bed, walk-in wardrobe, private balcony with sun lounges and an incredible uninterrupted water view and a master ensuite with double shower and bath. The second bedroom includes a king bed (that can be split to two singles on request) and a private balcony. The third and fourth bedrooms are on the lower level and have king beds (that can be split into two singles upon request), ensuite bathrooms and both have direct access to the outdoor pool area and views across Dent Passage.

If the mere thought of prepping, planning and packing all the things your baby might possibly need while you’re away makes your head hurt, Hamilton Island has just the thing to help you travel light. With a selection of free of charge By Request items that can be ordered in advance and in your Yacht Club Villa on your arrival, we can help make your stay as relaxing as possible, saving the extra worry when packing for your holiday.

Mid-stay clean for any bookings 5 nights or longer. Additional cleaning available, priced on application.

Late Check-out policy: Due to the nature of the Yacht Club Villas and the length of time required for Housekeeping to prepare these properties for a 2pm check-in, guests will need to adhere to the 10am check-out time. Late departures are available, subject to availability and at an additional cost. Prices on application.
