For the brand-new Windelo shipyard, the launch of this first 50 Adventure is the consecration of long months of research, process implementation and thousands of hours of work; a form of consecration that calls for others since a 54 is under construction and five more catamarans are on order. For us, discovering this Windelo 50 was an opportunity to measure the incredible possibilities of innovation and evolution offered by multihulls in general: this model is like no other, and so much the better

Test location: Canet-en-Roussillon, France Conditions: Wind ENE 6-10 knots ; Sea state slight

A new shipyard

We’ve been anticipating the launch of this famous Windelo for weeks now. And then we waited a few more weeks, so that everything would be working perfectly... In short, we couldn’t conceal our delight the day when, at last, we were able to sail in the Mediterranean. Let’s wind back to the beginning of the story. On the catamaran market, Olivier Kauffmann is looking for a fast, light and comfortable 50-footer. But he can’t find what he’s looking for: “the ORCs are a little too sporty for my taste, the Catanas have lost their initial philosophy and the Outremer 51’s nacelle lacks volume”. Olivier set about studying the possibility of building a one-off catamaran. It should be noted that our man knows how to manage projects - he was General Manager of Decathlon France, Chairman of the Board, then CEO, of Cabesto and Orange Marine. The opportunity to create a shipyard, supported by his son Gauthier, became obvious. The Windelo brand (a name close to Mindelo, a port of call on the island of São Vicente, in Cape Verde) was created and it was already an invitation to travel...

Behind the Scene of Windelo Catamaran Hakuna Matata North Atlantic Tour

Hakuna Matata Windelo catamaran

Hakuna Matata left Canet-en-Roussillon on 17 October 2021, and it is the first Windelo to have crossed the Atlantic by the south and then the north. For Windelo and its partners, it is a fulfillment of the work accomplished in developing its new eco-composite and electric propulsion system, integrating the production of green energy, as well as many other innovations, such as the forward cockpit, the nacelle opening onto the exterior on all sides.

The Windelo 50 Adventure is the first ocean-cruising production catamaran fitted with electric engines to have done an Atlantic tour of 20,000 nautical miles. This Atlantic tour confirms that electric catamarans have a future and that they have sufficient range to make long crossings, all in harmony with the marine flora and fauna.

Hakuna Matata Windelo catamaran

The Windelo 50 Adventure , which was awarded the special “sustainability” title at the 2022 European Yacht Of The Year , included eco-friendliness from the project’s outset. In partnership with the architects Barreau and Neuman and researchers from the Ecole Nationale des Mines d’Alès, JPS Conseil, it required two years of research and development to:

– Develop a new eco-friendly composite, reducing the carbon footprint of the Windelo catamarans by 47%.

– Integrate an electric propulsion system.

southern wind 100

– Integrate the production of green energy (solar, hydro generation, wind turbine on option) to be as much range as possible on fossil energy.

The sailors at Windelo have kept a close eye on the Windelo 50 adventure. As Olivier Kauffmann, founder of Windelo, says: “ It’s the first time that a Windelo has made such a voyage and crossed the Atlantic twice in under a year. After many years working on designing, building, and perfecting this project, it is like seeing your children leave home and succeed in their lives. It is a magical moment in the Windelo story and the history of catamarans, ” says co-founder Gautier Kauffmann. “ Thanks to this voyage of over 20,000 nautical miles in tropical and then colder climates, the eco-composite structure – basalt fiber and PET foam – the electric engine and the production of green energy have been thoroughly tested in a small space of time. It confirms our conviction that greener, more eco-friendly sailing is possible and sustainable in the future. Windelo catamarans also show that you can create long-distance production cruisers that respect the environment and the comfort of their owner while remaining sustainable and performing well under sail and on the engine .”

A Look Back on the Adventure of Hakuna Matata

After more than ten years of chartering on the Mediterranean Sea and the coast of Brittany, Matthieu and his family felt like taking to the ocean for a new, almost year-long family adventure. Matthieu chose Windelo for the elegant design of its catamarans and the innovative concepts, such as the forward cockpit and the electric propulsion system. He explains, “ Windelo has designed a unique boat, combining sailing performance and an enjoyable quality of life on board for all the family. ”

A few months after the launch of Hakuna Matata and a summer in the Mediterranean, Matthieu, Perrine, and their son Youri set off on a 10-month cruise aboard their Windelo 50 Adventure .

Hakuna Matata Windelo catamaran

Hakuna Matata and its crew left Canet-en-Roussillon marina on 17 October 2021 and set sail for the Spanish coast and then the Canaries before sailing across the Atlantic to Martinique. After a few weeks of sailing in the West Indies and the Caribbean, they sailed Hakuna Matata to the United States Coast, heading North to Florida, New York, Boston, and then Canada. Matthieu and Perrine wanted to tour the North Atlantic and sail in all weather conditions and at all latitudes. They have now done this, with a return crossing between St Pierre and Miquelon and Iceland, before setting sail for the Faroe Islands, Scotland, and then the French Atlantic coast. This wonderful family adventure came to a close in August 2022 on the coast of Brittany. Hakuna Matata was then skippered to the Mediterranean to return to its home port, Canet-en-Roussillon.

“ Sailing on the Windelo 50 is very enjoyable. The boat accelerates well, is quick in light winds, and is very stable on the sea. It makes exceptionally good progress upwind, and for me, this was a big surprise since I had never had a chance to sail on daggerboard catamarans before. ”

The lighter the catamaran, the better its performance. The Windelo 50 Adventure catamaran weighs 11.2 metric tons. “ We planned a load of 2 metric tons and seemed to stay within 1.5 metric tons, in the knowledge that the boat has a payload capacity of 2.6 metric tons. Since the weight distribution is very low and central to the cockpit, the center of gravity is always perfectly positioned. We regularly sailed at 13, 14, and 15 knots and reached surf speeds of up to 23/24 knots. Hakuna Matata sailed easily at an apparent wind of 35°, and tacking was incredibly simple with the self-tacking solent. The catamaran tacks easily in just 3 knots of wind. ”

Hakuna Matata Windelo catamaran

“ In eight months, we only used 800 liters of diesel, which is very little when you consider that this includes heating during the period spent in colder sailing zones. The boat had practically no need for fossil fuel. We had 3500 W of solar panels and, of course, hydro generation under sail. We love sailing, and we are the kind of people who like clocking up miles rather than staying several days at the same anchorage. This means that we very often sail on full batteries, and when we get to an anchorage, we have plenty of power for life on board.

On our outward crossing from the Canaries to the West Indies, four of us lived aboard and never had to turn on the generator. We arrived in Le Marin using only electric power. [Windelo] has made some very good innovations in electric/hybrid propulsion systems. After a few months of testing with the boatyard, the system was completely mature and really stood up to the test of our voyage. As far as I know, it is the first sailing catamaran to integrate a real electric and hybrid configuration. ”

Some Travel Memories

The most impressive part of the journey for Matthieu was the Atlantic crossing between Canada and Iceland. “ We had really bad weather and sailing conditions, with a cross sea and pyramid-shaped waves, seven to eight meters high! The forward cockpit proved itself to be very practical. Protected from the wind and cold, we were dry, and barely a bucketful of water entered the space once everything was closed – and above all, the cockpit is on the boat’s center of gravity, drastically reducing our movement in troughs of eight meters. It helped us hold out physically, and we felt better and much safer than if we were outside, even though it was really daunting. ”

What was the most incredible moment? “ When we entered New York by night, after a rough night’s sailing. We were enchanted by the size of the city, with illuminated buildings and advertising boards, so typical of this huge city. ”

catamaran sailing

Addressing growing American demand for more environmentally friendly performance multihulls, Windelo Catamaran—a French shipyard specializing in eco-advanced performance catamarans—and US-based dealer Just Catamarans, have announced a new partnership to better serve the United States. Just Catamarans, who specialize in the performance cruising segment, will take a strategic role in the growth of Windelo Catamaran within the US market.

The new partnership will be in place as the Miami International Boat Show kicks off in February 2024, where the Windelo 50 Yachting is set to make its US premiere, after its successful launch in Europe in 2023.

Designed in collaboration with the architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman, and designer Charlotte Schiffer, the Windelo 50 is a fast, bluewater cruising catamaran that features an electric propulsion system, which includes two electric engines and an inventive hull construction technique that utilizes volcanic basalt laminates, presenting a more sustainable alternative to traditional fiberglass matting.

“Our entire team looks forward to working with Windelo,” said Thomas Chambers, president of Just Catamarans sales. “Representing a bespoke brand of performance multihulls that focuses more on sustainability and introducing electric-hybrid propulsion in this market is exciting for us and our clients.”

Founded in 2004 and based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Just Catamarans is a recognized catamaran service specialist that also offers sales for brokerage and new boats for clients across the full spectrum of catamaran ownership.

Windelo 50 Yachting

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Just Catamarans aboard the Windelo family,” said Gautier Kauffmann, founder of Windelo. “The reputation of Just Cats in the US, and their expertise in developing and supporting high-end performance cruising multihulls, will be an undeniable strength for the development of Windelo in the US market. Just Catamarans will be a key partner to the service footprint for all of our clients visiting the US and the Bahamas aboard a Windelo. While Just Catamarans will boost the visibility and service of our brand in the territory, we understand how important it is for our customers to maintain direct contact with the shipyard throughout the lifecycle of their boat. This is why, together with Thomas’ team, we set up a partnership that [creates] a joint approach to sales and service of our owners’ catamarans.”

Windelo Catamaran is a French boatyard based in Canet-en-Roussillon. It builds innovative, eco-advanced performance catamarans. After three years of research on eco-friendly materials and guided by strong family values, Olivier and his son Gautier Kauffmann, both passionate about sailing, founded Windelo in 2018 to build comfortable, environmentally friendly recreational craft.

windelo 50 owners review

Windelo 50 Owner’s Review

10 minutes read

Many thanks to the owner’s of the first Windelo 50: “Hakuna Matata” for this owner’s review. There are some great responses in this one, very comprehensive. At the end of the interview, you will find an update on their Atlantic crossing with some information on diesel usage.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your Windelo 50? What is your plan? Long distance cruising or weekend sailing? After 10 years of chartering – on average 2 to 5 weeks a year along the Brittany and Mediterranean coasts – the time has come for us as a family to set sail for a 8-months North Atlantic tour.

windelo catamaran

Why did you choose the Windelo 50? Was there one thing overall that convinced you to purchase a 50? I’m generally passionate about design and innovation which is exactly how Windelo created the boat. By pioneering new concepts, Windelo have created a boat that is unique in terms of combining great sailing performance and quality of life aboard for the whole family.

As an entrepreneur, it was also added interest for me to sponsor the development of a new brand.

When was she launched? How was the purchase and build process? Hakuna Matata was launched Febuary 26th, and the team did a fantastic job to get her completed and launched amongst all the Covid-19 experience.

What’s the best thing about her? I love that she takes off in very light winds, and that in normal conditions we travel faster and higher than before. Plus we all enjoy her open plan which is a fantastic platform when we’re in a nice bay enjoying swimming, dinner, etc.

windelo catamaran

What would you change if anything on the design? Maybe you wouldn´t change anything? Well, I’ve ordered a Windelo 54 as the next upgrade so the design works for me. The only thing we re-worked with the yard was of the cockpit upholstery which is now way more comfortable !

Does she carry weight well, or do you have to be careful to not overload her with gear? So she’s 12.2T herself, and 14.6T with all tanks full, spares on board, our nice tender with steering console & 20CV engine, galley equipment etc. etc.

That leaves us a full 2T to carry, of which 8 crew and their kit would be about 0,5T. That’s the most people we’ll have on board so I should think we’ll always be around 1.5T below the max payload.

Since the weight distribution itself is very low and central at the mast/cockpit, the center of gravity is always well placed regardless how much you load up the various lockers.

What are the “Must Have” Options buying new in your opinion? eg sail options, water-maker, generator, solar options, carbon options etc From an electric standpoint it makes sense to get the right amount of solar panels for your equipment and life aboard. And when you do so, because the boat is so good at managing power, the induction cooking hob and electric oven are a must have.

In terms of rigging and sails, the code 0 makes a lot of sense and for our Atlantic crossing I also chose to board a 160m² Gennaker.

windelo catamaran

Does your catamaran have daggerboards or high-performance fixed fin keels? She has dagger-boards, which are absolutely vertical and used symmetrically (no adjustment at every tack).

They are located centrally in the hulls which is where they are most efficient, yet very nicely integrated down below. Many people don’t notice them in the cabins.

How have you configured the saloon and cabins? Hakuna Matata is a 3 cabin owner boat, but with some specifics. The forward port cabin is made into a full size study with a fold-out bed nonetheless. And the forward starboard cabin is a children’s bunk bed layout with bookshelves and a desk for their homework.

Both aft cabins have double beds, one of them is a even a full queen size… We’re very pleased with this layout which gives us a nice feeling of being in our own home.

windelo catamaran

What are the “Nice to Have Options”? I will say I went for the carbon mast which removes a bit of weight from the boat but is also aesthetically pleasing. I hope that’s recognised also in terms of resale potential later on.

We added a sunbed on the roof and you could get more also for the front of the boat. Every option is per say nice to have… I found that the yard will really advise you based on your schedule, your family and the size of the boat as to what really makes sense for you.

Which options did you skip? Personally I skipped the Hi-Fi sound system installation. With full 220V supply we can bring our own Bluetooth speakers or even our existing Hi-Fi system from home.

How have you set up the power system? How much solar, hydro, wind, generator back up etc. Is this sufficient for your power needs? Even though we have a sunbed on the roof we still have 3500W of solar power which is ample to provide for live on board by itself. We usually have power left over to provide to the engine battery packs.

windelo catamaran

Is she easy to maintain? Servicing engines, standing rigging etc I haven’t gone through any maintenance myself yet as she’s been based at Windelo. But I do know that the new Bellmarine engines that have been fitted don’t have any belts and only need a checkup every two years.

Is she easy to sail short-handed? To shorten sail? Is the running rigging complex? Do all the lines lead to the helms? All the lines come back inside the cockpit. Only the Gennaker/Code 0 halyard and reefing hooks are at the mast, but then the mast is only one step up from the cockpit. So essentially you can say everything is done from the cockpit – it really feels protected and safe.

My boys and wife like to take part in the sailing most of the time, but on night shifts it is often the case that one of us operates the boat alone and it’s never been a problem. I know the guys from the yard have delivered her single-handed too.

windelo catamaran

What’s she like in heavy weather / a blow / big seas Well there are a couple of ways she’s different. Firstly she is very sea-worthy. Her thin bows cut into the water rather than smash into it so there is no additional wash created. Then the long trampoline disperses any remaining wash.

She is so high above the water that if any water ever reaches the cockpit it is merely a splash on the windows. Secondly even if it does get wet outside, within the cockpit you can stay dry and warm, and feel very safe.

How are the forward helm positions? Good in weather? How is the visibility when docking? As I mentioned just before, yes the cockpit is a very safe environment in heavy and wet conditions. However, when you feel like it or in lighter conditions you’ll probably have the cockpit open. Then it is quite surprising how well you can feel the airflow through the boat, you actually feel the gusts and the lulls just as if you were on the top of a flybridge. So you actually do have that feel for the environment and changing conditions, which is important to us sailors.

How does she sail in light winds? Sailing on board the Windelo 50 is extremely nice. It’s a boat that accelerates well, is fast in light winds, and very stable on the water. It rises exceptionally well in the wind, and this was a huge surprise for me, as I’ve never had the opportunity to sail with retracting daggerboards. Really very enjoyable.

How does she sail close hauled? How high does she point to true? She sails nicely at 45° to the TWA. And tacking upwind is easy with he self-tacking yet big solent. She sails and tacks easily in 3 knots of true wind.

windelo catamaran

Typically, what’s your average speed on passage? What´s the top speed you have logged surfing? At what TWS do you start sailing? In force 3 to 5 which is where we typically like to sail most days we’ll consistently travel at 9,10,11 knots without too much trimming. But it is possible to push her more, and for instance in stronger conditions we regularly sail 13, 14, 15 knots.

To answer your question, so far my top speed is 19.2 knots off Mallorca. But we’ll be sailing for the next few months so stay tuned 😉.

What’s she like under power? Speed, manouevrability? With her light displacement in harbours she actually starts and stops surprisingly easily with very little engine power applied. But if you need it, electric engines provide a lot of torque so you can stop the boat or accelerate out of someone’s way very easily.

Is she easy to dock, what’s the visibility like? Visibility upfront is remarkable. And the crew stay in touch easily, then can go in and out of the cockpit from the front which creates a lot of fluidity in our coordination. It’s true a weak point is one small dead angle from the helm towards the aft staboard quarter.

Windelo are opening up this angle and of course if you’re into tech there is a back-up camera. We find that we manage without just fine but it’s there if we need it.

What is she like at anchor? There’s very smooth to and fro between galley and dining room, and the aft deck completely open to the water is a real bonus.

What’s she like when it´s raining hard? When it’s raining you can still go sailing… in your socks.

windelo catamaran

Is she comfortable down below? Cabins/saloon/galley/heads. I’m a tall guy so for me (and I know for the Windelo family too), headroom was important. The amount of space down below is impressive, and all the living areas are very bright with natural daylight pouring in.

How is the finish of the interior? Does she creak under sail? In terms of the structure, that’s one of the most impressive aspects of this boat. Let’s remember is a number one : not a single creak or noise underway – other than the flow of water against the hulls. This speaks for a strong design and high build quality of the structure itself and is probably the most important part.

I’ll be honest, the finishes of the interior weren’t quite where they needed to be initially. But we did some rework with the yard and it does meet expectations for an Adventure version. Windelo themselves have put this as the priority for the next boats, and I’m confident that when they make this a focus they can be as good on finishes as they have been on the structure. No doubt the next boats will be right first time!

What is important is that all along the way and whatever the subject they were open to feedback and rework, which is bound to happen on a number one. What counts here is the dynamic and the spirit of continuous improvement with which Gautier and his teams approach any problem.

windelo catamaran

What is your favourite spot on the boat? The forward cockpit is a key feature. We’re close to the center of gravity; it’s crazy! Now that I’ve had a taste of it, I couldn’t bear to sail a catamaran with an outside aft cockpit. In this forward cockpit, you’re well protected from spray and wind when it’s closed. And then, in calmer weather, you can open up and enjoy sailing from the outside. At the same time, because you’re open to the living quarters, you can socialize with everyone on board, the crew, and the others.

I appreciate the comfort when I’m at the helm. The Windelo is a real sailor’s boat, with particular attention given to the comfort of the crew when sailing. There’s a lot of socializing between the cockpit and the living quarters, so you can keep an eye on navigation without being cut off from life on board and the crew.

Those who aren’t navigating have nice comfortable spaces, in the living quarters, for example, with the quarter-berth or on the trampolines to enjoy the sunshine.

Perhaps I shouldn’t say this, but whether day in rough conditions or at night there is no more talk of lifejackets and strapping on. Everyone – including younger kids – is safe in the cockpit, in all conditions.

Is she good for hosting guests? We have friends across the Mediterranean and in the US. We have already hosted brunches and dinners on board and will continue to do so as we visit our USA friends. The outdoor table seats 8-10 people.

windelo catamaran

What kind of modifications have you done and why? I followed the teams advice in fitting a 2nd 48V battery pack to power the engines – and I will say it made sense.

Any plans for further customisation? The yard kitted out the boat for the ARC just recently. I think that’s the end of our customisation, and now we’ll be working on the interior design for our Windelo 54.

If you were to swap her for another boat, what would that be? Or maybe you wouldn’t swap her? If anything, another Windelo.

How is the after sales service from Windelo? Obviously with one boat on the water it is not yet an industrial after sales service with service tickets etc. Personally my boat was based in Canet on the yard’s doorstep which made things very fluid and in-person.

Right now I’m in touch with the yard through Iridium – at the moment just to keep them updated on our progress towards the Canaries. On top of that I know that Windelo can remotely monitor the Boat Management System and Engines whenever there’s a 4G network.

Anything else you would add to help people thinking of buying a Windelo 50? There’s something for everyone in the family to like. Because so many of the concepts are new but also customisable, its worth viewing the boat with the family and going through the personalisation process with the sales team.

But if you want to get a first idea, I hear they also just put their configurator online.

windelo catamaran

Finally, what are your favourite 3 things about the Windelo 50 Well, we’ve talked a lot about the cockpit and the living spaces. That’s two of them. But I also like the fact that this boat comes out of the yard with significantly less CO2 footprint from the Basalt and PET structure, and innovates in the electric/hybrid propulsion very well.

This is – to my knowledge – the first sailing catamaran with a true full electric and hybrid integrated setup that has proven to work. I’m glad to be able to be the first owner of such a pioneering boat, and I’d encourage any sailor looking in this category and sensitive to environmental matters down the Windelo path.

In 2022, Hakuna Mata completed a double Atlantic crossing (there and back).

In eight months, they used only 800 litres of diesel, which includes the heating during the period spent in colder sailing zones.

The yacht left Canet-en-Roussillon on 17 October 2021, and is the first Windelo to have crossed the Atlantic (south route out, northern route back).

With more than 20,000 nautical miles and a 10-month Atlantic cruise under her belt, she proves that a transition to efficient, high-performance, eco-friendly sailing is possible for the nautical industry and positions Windelo at the forefront of this market segment.

The eco-composite structure (basalt fiber and PET foam), the electric engine, and the production of green energy (solar, hydro) have been thoroughly tested.

What was the most memorable part of the journey? The Atlantic crossing between Canada and Iceland.

“We had really bad weather and sailing conditions, with a cross sea and pyramid shaped waves, seven to eight meters high! The forward cockpit proved itself to be very practical. Protected from the wind and cold, we were dry, and barely a bucketful of water entered the space once everything was closed – and above all, the cockpit is on the boat’s center of gravity, drastically reducing our movement in troughs of eight meters.

It helped us hold out physically, and we felt better and much safer than if we were outside, even though it was really daunting.”

What was the most incredible moment? “When we entered New York by night, after a rough night’s sailing. We were enchanted by the size of the city, with illuminated buildings and advertising boards, so typical of this huge city.”

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

THE WINDELO INNOVATIONS Performance, comfortable and eco-friendly catamarans

Windelo is the desire to expose oneself to something new, innovative, powerful, bigger than oneself. To seek innovations on eco-friendly materials, industrialization techniques, sailing uses and to impel a new economic reality: “We want to be part of this transformation, totally related to respecting our environment.”

Discover the Windelo innovations available for all our range of catamarans.

The ecology at Windelo

We, the Windelo sailors, act for boating that respects people and the environment. We board on innovative boats, built mainly of recycled and bio-sourced materials. We favor sustainable energies such as hydrogenation, solar panels, wind turbines and we offer electric propulsion for zero-carbon navigation.

Confort

The Windelo team wanted to design a yacht that you could live with every day even when you are many nautical miles from land. The key to this was to provide a feeling of both space and light in the ultimate open plan package. The key behind creating a feeling of space was to eliminate the barriers between indoor and outdoor space, thereby creating a huge living area. To do this, the portholes and gunwale openings have been cleverly designed to subtly blend the line between where indoor ends and outdoor begins while also letting in masses of natural light.

Performance

All the Windelo catamarans are recognizable by their impeccably designed slim well-balanced hull, designed by Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman to enhance performance and seaworthiness. Built for the pleasure of sailing and exploring, they permit a better performance than other catamarans of this size.

windelo catamaran

It is absolutely essential for sailors to trust their boats completely. This is why Windelo attaches great importance to building a strong robust catamaran, carefully designed with ergonomic equipment so that sailors can confidently relax and unwind.

Inside/Outside Modular Thinking

Make the most of the sea! In keeping with Windelo’s guiding philosophy, the architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman have achieved the impossible thanks to the clever use of lifting partitions. Windelo and its architects invented a cockpit living space combined with a helm station, opening fully onto the sea. This ground-breaking solution offers extensive living space in a well-contained nacelle, making life onboard and sailing an experience to remember.

The first and most notable feature is the tilt/slide ‘garage door’ at the rear of the saloon which can be slid open in warm weather to create a massive indoor/outdoor living space – transforming with the single pull of a handle the entire ambience of the Windelo. This is a theme that is repeated throughout the interior of the yacht, with retractable doors both to the forward cockpit and the deck ensuring that in clement weather you can transform your layout while in rough weather there is ample scope to batten down the hatches and enclose yourself in a safe, secure area.

Panoramic Views

Sailing is all about being involved with the elements and your natural surroundings. This applies whether you are out at sea running before a gale at 15 knots or lying at anchor sipping on a cocktail. The team at Windelo was determined to ensure that the design incorporated 360-degree views from the comfort of the saloon.

The 360-degree views are achieved by a clever design that ensures the absolute maximum amount of light into the saloon. The toughened glass windows feature very narrow mullions which ensure that the absolute maximum amount of light penetrates the saloon. This means that you always have a superb view of the action and ensures that going to sea is all about being at sea and seeing the beauty of nature from every angle.

Boat management system

Boat Management System

A catamaran is both a way to travel and a place to live at sea, fitted with lots of technical, electrical and electronic installations that produce and consume energy. To improve your comfort aboard and make life easier, Windelo and its partners connected all the installations on board. They communicate with one another through a user interface providing an accurate reading of energy production and consumption on board, in addition to the status of each item of equipment.

Electric Hybrid Drive System

Thanks to Windelo’s electric hybrid drive system,  you will be navigating silently even when using the engine. Enjoy the sound of the waves and undisturbed wildlife as you set sail from your dream anchorage to a new destination. No more exhaust fumes and vibrations – sailing is now a really pleasurable clean, environmentally-friendly experience.

The Windelo catamarans are fitted with two 20 kW electric motors. With an electric drive, there’s no need to warm up the motor. You have full power from the moment you switch it on.

windelo catamaran

Green Energies

Building a boat that works in harmony with nature lies at the heart of the Windelo concept. To achieve this an electric motor is essential – yet it is also vital to have a good cruising range. With green energy – hydro-generation, solar panels, wind turbines – and generators the Windelo can cruise more than 1100 miles at 6kn under power.

Forward Cockpit

The Windelo team was determined to think outside of the box when it came to even the most basic concepts and the introduction of a forward cockpit revolutionises the way in which you handle a multihull; providing a clear vision of both the hulls for mooring, the sails above for trimming and the horizon itself for dreaming. The revolutionary forward cockpit is the key to an easy handling ethos. This is the real game changer when it comes to multihull design. Placed at the foot of the mast, the forward cockpit means that you have unobstructed views of what is ahead of you while also benefitting from excellent levels of protection from the elements.

New Windelo 50 Yachting

Customization

The aim at Windelo has never been to mass produce yachts. We are all different, such as our adventures. We want to create a product that works for you. This means that there’s a version of the Windelo catamarans (47, 50, 54 and 57) to suit you: Adventure, Yachting and Sport. By the way, every Windelo will be produced with the option of a high level of customization for a unique and wonderful life experience.

Buying a yacht is a hugely personal thing and we understand that each customer has their own specific set of needs. Whether you are an explorer at heart and you like cruising in real comfort, or whether you are looking for the speed thrills, we will work with you, if you want it, to ensure that we are producing a yacht that is right for you. While the fundamental hull design will always remain the same, other aspects such as interior layout, running rigging set up, even color… are all open to customization.

Our boatyard’s eco-design approach to materials and its construction method heavily reduce the need for molds. This gives us greater freedom to create versions of each catamaran and to customize them.

Recycled and Bio-sourced Materials

Sustainability is one of the watchwords of Windelo and we have taken an uncompromising and innovative approach to construction in order to achieve this. Our groundbreaking use of sustainable volcanic basalt and PET – made from recycled bottles of plastic in the hull construction – puts Windelo at the forefront of the green revolution.

As part of the creation of new types of catamaran made in Occitanie, an audacious choice of ecological innovation has been selected in partnership with the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France). It’s a question of combining ecological performance in terms of minimizing the environmental footprint and structural resistance, and this, in a global approach of circular economy on all parts of the boat. To do this, and in connection with the IMT MINES ALES, Windelo has relied on the use of secondary raw materials, competitive  virgin petroleum-based materials, that fully comply with the specifications in terms of mechanical performance. This is a real first step to the development of a 2.0 fleet ships fully integrated into the challenges and ecological challenges of the 21st century.

Associated with an ecological approach of circular economy integrating a not insignificant part of competitive secondary raw materials from virgin materials, the architectural design and the resistance of materials on the new Windelo catamarans are mechanically tested in the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France) in connection with the architects and designers of the project. The design of the ship, and in particular the hulls and bows, go through a search for efficient structuring and arranging of materials composing it, combined with a mechanically optimized geometrical assembly. To this end, specific test developments, such as the study of distortion of the structure and of the panels constituating the hull of the ship, are studied by digital image correlation techniques coupled with standardized strength tests.

Founder of Catana

“The cruising program for this new boat raises the question of the antagonism between the search for performance under sail and the pleasure of navigation, and the development of pleasant living spaces. The originality of the answer is provided here in the arrangement of the cockpit bringing together the helm and maneuvers to the center of the boat and in the arrangement of living space that occupies the rear of the nacelle.

Just behind the mast the outer cockpit offers two helm stations protected from the wind and spray, a beautiful view of the sails and bows, and allows to have all the maneuvers on hand while limiting the needs to circulate on the bridge. Out of navigation, the cockpit can be more widely protected from the outside and open to the rear space.

Fully opened behind this cockpit, we have not developed two living spaces duplicating one inside the other but a single large space which is ajustable. We have focused our efforts on the geometry of the material and visual limits of this space and on the opening kinematics of the bays. Once opened, they “disappear” to transform the interior into an exterior. The generosity of these openings also allows to modulate the ventilation of this space by playing on a wide range of opening on its four sides

This work on the modularity and the disappearance of limits is found at the extreme rear of the nacelle, with an articulated platform to the davits transforming it into a floor when anchored, and in the rear cabins, whose wide turning porthole eliminates the angle between side plating and back side. The cabin space is therefore generous despite the relative narrowness of the hulls.

All these choices allow us to combine a contained hold of the nacelle, pledge control of the weight estimate, to a generous living space, with a central part given to navigation and maneuvering. The slenderness of the forward spikes, the significant free height under the platform, and the attention paid to the centering of the masses, complete the marine qualities expected for an offshore navigation program.

The other originality of the project brought by this new construction site is in the approach of “eco-design” on materials and construction. Strongly limiting the use of molds, the latter brings a greater margin of freedom in the variations and evolutions of the boats thus conceived. ”

Christophe Barreau et Frédéric Neuman

Who could know if it is the father or the son who is the most  passionate? It doesn’t matter. The important thing  is to write an innovative project within a family culture, for today and for generations to come. Hand over the guiding light, this is Olivier Kauffmann’s will. “At first I wanted to make my own boat, for me and my family; go on trip around the world living on a  efficient and pleasant catamaran. I dreamed of a new quality of space. Today, the dream has matured, and I want to share it with the great family of sailors. »

Windelo is the desire to expose us to something new, innovative, powerful, bigger than oneself. To seek innovations on materials, techniques of industrialization and uses to impulse a new economic reality. “We want to be part of this transformation related to the respect of our environment, it is for us, essential to work in this respect of men and nature. Men are at the heart of the project with the desire to recruit and form a passionate team, surrounded by experts recognized as the best in their field.

And the innovation doesn’t stop here, because the constructive process makes it possible to envisage fast evolutions from one boat to another while remaining well priced. An ambitious and respectful project ; Welcome to the Windelo adventure.
