Adventure-Bound in a Northern Marine 57

  • By David Schmidt
  • September 23, 2022

Stepping aboard the Northern Marine 57 Raised Pilothouse feels like stepping onto a small, handsomely appointed ship.

Of course, the yacht’s stainless-steel breastplate, bulbous bow and substantial freeboard offered some foreshadowing as I approached the berth at Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes, Washington. I was a literal stone’s skip from where Northern Marine has built more than 40 yachts since 1995. This was the sixth—and newest—57-footer the company had built since 2002.

Stuart Archer, Northern Marine’s general manager and yacht designer, met me in the cockpit, which is fitted with low-maintenance Flexiteek decking, fiberglass rails and stainless-steel handrails. Archer stands 6 feet, 4 inches and has been plying Pacific Northwest waters since he was a young man. As we moved into the salon, I was happy to see that he designs onboard headroom with taller mariners in mind.

Archer says the 57 would traditionally have walk-around side decks, but this one has a single side deck to starboard, and the superstructure goes full beam to port, increasing the salon’s interior space.

Northern Marine allows owners a high degree of customization. Archer says that anything—from the length overall and layout to the engine, electronics and tankage—can be owner-specified. Some customers, he says, simply point to a sistership; others spec every detail. Build times average two to three years.

While this 57 was built as a high-end spec boat, Northern Marine was founded as a semicustom builder in 1995 by Richard Lemieux, a Delta Marine alumnus who brought 20 years of boatbuilding experience to the chart table. Northern Marine built dozens of yachts, mostly expedition-grade vessels, on Lemieux’s watch before a 2006 ownership change. The Great Recession proved challenging, and ownership continued evolving until some employees licensed the brand and built two vessels. In early 2017, Jay Bernstein, the owner of an earlier Northern Marine 57, acquired a majority stake, but he died mountain biking in 2018. More ownership changes unfurled until Peter Whiting of Seattle Yachts purchased Northern Marine’s assets in 2019.

Those assets included the yacht I was aboard, in semi-built condition. Whiting also retained Northern Marine’s core team, whose quality of workmanship and attention to detail were evident everywhere I looked.

Archer says the yacht’s hull and decks (less the tabbing) are built from composite fiberglass and vinylester resin using a vacuum-bag process. Balsa and foam coring is used in the topsides and decks, while everything south of the waterline is solid fiberglass.

All interior woodwork is book-matched walnut, all cabinetry has dovetail joints, and all of the galley’s appliances are tastefully treated with walnut veneers. The headliners are Majilite, some soles are heated, and all lighting is power-friendly LED.

Several strides and two stair risers led us to the galley; two more stairs led to the pilothouse helm with Furuno and Garmin electronics. A day head is abaft and to port of the helm, which is tended from a Stidd seat. A settee abaft and to starboard converts into a berth.

Belowdecks are two staterooms. The full-beam master is a walk-around space with a king-size berth, while the fo’c’sle stateroom has a queen-size berth and a hatch above the headboard for stargazing (and emergency egress). Both staterooms are en suite.

While all the interior spaces feel purposeful, Archer says his designs start with the engine room. There, we had headroom to spare and walking room around the 325 hp John Deere diesel engine (continuous-rated with a below-water exhaust). All wiring is clearly labeled, and operators can change the oil underway. A sea chest allows owner-operators to fish out ingested detritus. The yacht uses hydraulics to power its crane, stabilizer fins and windlass, and it carries a hydraulic get-home drive that can provide 5 to 5.5 knots of speed while sipping fuel.

Topside, via the port stairs, is the flybridge. A 1,500-pound Steelhead Marine crane is aft, with space to accommodate a 17-foot RIB. A fiberglass hardtop shelters the single-seat helm, which has two 16-inch Garmin displays. A mini-fridge, sink, ice maker and grill are just abaft the helm and to port. The grill, I imagine, is invaluable during Alaskan or Patagonian salmon seasons.

Justin Parkins of Seattle Yachts piloted the 57 out of the slip and into Guemes Channel. A 10- to 15-knot southeasterly breeze was blowing, and the seas were generally flat, at least relative to the yacht’s 130,000- to 135,000-pound displacement. Archer says the 2,600 gallons of diesel yields an approximate maximum range of 5,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed just under 9 knots and 1,550 rpm. The yacht’s top-end speed is 10.6 knots at 2,100 rpm. This 57’s tankage holds 360 gallons of fresh water, 120 gallons of graywater and 170 gallons of blackwater. The watermaker can produce 660 gallons per day.

This yacht’s ride is comfortable, and from the helm, it’s exceptionally quiet too.

“We’ve learned and implemented a few things over the years,” Archer says. “It’s mostly in the fiberglass work.”

When I took the helm, I was most impressed with the yacht’s seakindly manners and maneuverability, given the bulbous bow, full keel and displacement. Later, when I stepped off back at Cap Sante Marina, I couldn’t help but imagine how cool it would be to ply the Northwest Passage aboard this boat.

Full-Length Keel Shoe

The Northern Marine 57 Raised Pilothouse has a full keel with a bulbous bow that’s protected by a full-length, 1½-inch-thick, stainless-steel shoe that extends abaft to the rudder’s trailing edge. The boat also has Kevlar-reinforced bows. Mariners headed for higher latitudes can discuss their itinerary with Northern Marine, which can make customizations accordingly.

Showroom Horsepower

The Northern Marine 57 Raised Pilothouse has a serious engine room. There’s roughly 6 feet, 6 inches of headroom in the air-conditioned main engine room, as well as comfortable crouching space in the lazarette. Networked video cameras enable engine-room monitoring from the helms, and the gleaming 3-inch stainless-steel prop shaft is conspicuous in the bilge.

Interior Aesthetics

This yacht’s interior woodwork is crafted from book-matched walnut. Archer says Northern Marine typically uses sapele or mahogany, and customers can spec any wood they like. The yard usually buys entire trees, a practice that helps hone the book-matching acumen. All cabinetry has dovetail joints, solid drawer fronts and thick veneers.

120' Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht

120' Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht

This new concept is a tremendous starting point for those looking to create their own iconic yacht with Burger’s renowned reputation of quality construction and attention to detail. It was developed to offer an exciting alternative to the typical raised pilothouse configuration and was designed in a close partnership with Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects.

The Burger 120 Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht is available in a variety of interior configurations, allowing the owner to partner with the Burger Design Team to create a yacht that is unique to their ambition and personal requirements. The hull shape has been optimized with Computational Fluid Dynamics and the final configuration has been tank tested at the Wolfson Unit in the United Kingdom to confirm performance characteristics.

This raised pilothouse motor yacht is designed with luxury accommodations and outdoor living in mind. All areas of the yacht have been developed to allow her new owner the ability to create custom features specific to their lifestyle and cruising needs.

“Our focus is always on providing options that excite our clients,” says Jim Ruffolo, president of Burger Boat Company. “We’ll start with a blank sheet of paper or a concept like the Burger 120 Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht. Either way, we design and build yachts that our clients can take around the world with family and friends to enjoy all the best that life has to offer.”

The new Burger 120 Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht is designed to provide its owner luxury and comfort at sea. Large hull windows provide plenty of natural light throughout the yacht, including the guest and crew cabins. Her initial design calls for an on-deck owner’s stateroom with large windows, his and hers heads, a private office and four guest staterooms, each featuring an ensuite head. The two aft guest cabins feature king-sized berths while the two forward guest cabins are convertible, allowing each cabin to feature a king-sized berth or two twin sized berths. Pullman berths are also installed in the forward guest cabins. The design allows for an eat-in galley with a large pantry. Its expansive crew area features three ensuite cabins for up to six people, with a large lounge/crew’s mess area. The crew area features discrete access to the guest accommodations via a private, watertight door, and direct access to the forward mechanical room, providing easy crew access for maintenance and service. The professional galley features a large dinette for use by the crew or as a country kitchen.

As an all-custom build, clients have a wealth of choices for interior and exterior finishes and details. The owner will work in a close partnership with the Burger Design Team to determine the exact specifications of the yacht’s interior layout. The sun deck offers expansive views of the surrounding area and houses a 20’ Novurania Catamaran Tender, jet ski and hot tub. The area also features a day head, large lounging and dining areas, and a helm to starboard. Access to the sun deck is via a comfortable stairwell from the aft deck or via the Pilot House forward. A hardtop is provided for those who prefer to enjoy the shade. The yacht’s interior configuration creates significant space for a large beach club and sports room aft. The yacht also features a large storage area, provided under the sun deck, for water toys, kayaks, cleaning supplies and more. Easy access to this space is via a large hatch aft.

The long-distance specialist. Built on the same proven hull as the 80 Tri-Deck, the Northern Marine 80 Raised Pilothouse yacht offers a lower profile and a superstructure that has been extended forward, evidence of an innovative and functional arrangement within.

The full-beam master suite has been located amidships on the lower deck for an extra measure of stability and comfort on open ocean crossings. A curved stairway leads up to the main deck from a private foyer serving the owners and VIP suites. In the saloon, a large fixed lounge to port faces a large-screen TV and casual seating opposite. Just forward, a dining banquette is adjacent to an exceptionally well-equipped galley.

Forward and up one half-level, the pilothouse offers an unobstructed view ahead over the Portuguese bridge and generous bulwarks, part of a hull form that ensures a dry ride. A raised observation/dining settée just forward of a convenient pilot berth overlooks the helm console with its array of state-of-the-art navigation and communication electronics. A second helm station on the flybridge includes plenty of guest seating, with a virtual 360-degree view for all. The boat deck extends over the main-level aft deck to accommodate two tenders with ease.

A stairway descends from the pilothouse to the forward accommodations deck arranged with two en suite guest staterooms; one with queen berth, the other with single berths for three.

Large storage areas throughout this yacht allow provisioning for long range cruising. Superb seakeeping, ride and handling make it worthwhile.

Evolution of the raised pilothouse

Designer Luiz de Basto usually shutters his Miami office for a holiday between Christmas and the New Year. Last year was no exception, but instead of traveling, he decided to take advantage of the quiet to sit at his desk and do some fanciful meditation about boats. Among the mindscapes he explored and sketched was the future of the raised pilothouse motor yacht.

‘What will be the raised pilothouse of the next decade?’ he wondered. ‘What can we do with it to excite the market?’

A creative designer engaged in free-form thinking, mindful of parameters but unbound by the specific demands of a client or a yard, can be a formidable force for change. Among the ideas that de Basto pondered was a raised pilothouse with a glass ceiling or even open with a retractable ceiling like a convertible car.

None of his ruminations may see the water, but de Basto is bullish on the concept. In any case, there is evidence the market is primed for new directions with this genre.

‘We haven’t seen much new stuff come out on this type of boat lately,’ he says, ‘but the concept is hardly exhausted. We can do much more with it.’

The raised pilothouse configuration has been around for more than 50 years and is the predominant arrangement for motor yachts between 24m and 37m feet. It essentially places the wheelhouse a half deck above the main, and typically has access a few steps higher to a flybridge and sun deck. In some cases, the wheelhouse is just a wheelhouse, but most are equipped with settees where once upon a time there was a pilot berth.

While it reduces some guest space on the main deck, a raised pilothouse’s main benefits are that it offers good visibility from the helm and opens up space on the main deck forward for a stateroom, crew quarters or a popular ‘country kitchen’ galley, often with windows and a forward view. Refinements to the concept are creating more space and new options for owners that are making them feel more like larger yachts.

No one can say with certainty which designer produced the first raised pilothouse (RPH) boat, but it is clear the type evolved from both the cruiser style and flush deck style yachts that were in fashion well into the 1950s. Both designs typically had an engine room that was well forward of amidships. As speed requirements increased, engines became larger and both hull forms and engine placement changes aft ensued to deliver semi-displacement speed. A melding of the two styles to accommodate these changes led to what we recognize as the raised pilothouse configuration.

Additional factors may have come into play with the evolution of the design. Ron Cleveringa, naval architect and vice president of sales and marketing of Burger Boat Company, cites a desire to get standing headroom into the low engine rooms of the cruiser style yachts of the day. To accomplish that, the galley and salon sole had to be raised. The raising of the sole level pushed the pilothouse up a few steps. Eventually the salon was moved aft of the pilothouse area while the galley remained forward, connected to crew quarters.

‘The raised pilothouse design is a direct result of a practical improvement as it relates to the engine room,’ Cleveringa says. As years passed, engine rooms moved fully aft alleviating that issue, but the concept stuck and has gained in popularity. ‘It’s all over the place,’ says de Basto. ‘It’s so much in your face, you don’t even see it.’

While the evolution of the raised pilothouse is not entirely linear, it is directly tied to some of the premier builders and designers of the second half of the 20th century, particularly in the US.

Jack Hargrave and his firm produced many raised pilothouse designs over the years dating from 38m Arara III in 1977 by Burger and the 27.4m_ _ Tropic Ana for Cheoy Lee in 1983.

Wisconsin’s Burger Boat Company was an early purveyor of the type in the 1960s and 1970s. Many Burgers from that era, drawn by the leading firms of the day, are considered classics and for many define the look of a proper motor yacht. Most, though, point to Broward Marine as bringing the raised pilothouse to prominence beginning in the early 1980s and extending through the mid-1990s.

During that period, yachts were evolving in many ways. For one, they were simply getting larger, and Broward was a pacesetter on that front. Electronics and entertainment systems were becoming more sophisticated and needed more space on board and demand for refrigeration and freezer space was growing.

Broward’s raised pilothouse, three-stateroom 72s and four-stateroom 100s, of which many were built during that period, innovated in the use of space on board, as did many others from the builder. The 25m Broward_ Shalimar_, delivered in 1980, was the first to employ the country kitchen arrangement in which the galley, forward on the main deck, was expanded to include informal dining for guests.

That innovation, brought to the party by Gertrude Denison, wife of Broward’s founder, Frank Denison, evolved through the 1980s and remains a popular arrangement on raised pilothouse yachts. When the country kitchen gained a foothold, the forward crew quarters below were sent to the back of the bus and that forward space was used to great effect for VIP staterooms or the perfect space to accommodate older children.

‘It was an easy way to accommodate dining,’ says Ken Denison, son of Frank and Broward’s vice president of new boat sales and construction from 1983 to 1993. ‘Formal dining was kind of on the way out.’

The compact space under the pilothouse evolved as well, and is now often used as an electronics server room, with space carved out for standard galley stowage, a dayhead or space for other mechanical installations.

Broward has been inactive for some years now, but many semi-custom and series yacht builders are playing – and raising – the raised pilothouse game. Naval architect Jack Sarin became the go-to guy on the West Coast for RPH designs in 1988 with the launch of the 29.9m custom Westport Golden Delicious .

Today, Westport is all semi-custom series yachts and has had significant success with its current 98, sharing a hull mould with its 112 model, which made its debut in 2002. The builder is approaching hull number 50 on the 112s. ‘It’s a great platform that continues to evolve,’ says Westport vice president Phil Purcell.

On the US East Coast, while Broward built in aluminium, Hatteras picked up the gauntlet for its composite motor yacht design in 1990, creating ever larger versions for Victory Lane Yachts owned by Felix Sabates.

When Sabates outgrew Hatteras’s production capability, he bought a stake in Trinity Yachts in the mid-1990s to pursue larger tri-deck yachts. Interestingly, Trinity currently has a spec 120 RPH to its own design on the way and a 50m version designed. Its last raised pilothouse was launched in 1999. Trinity’s first yacht was a 115 RPH called Leda delivered in 1994.

Much of the RPH game today centres on offering the amenities of a large yacht in a small package. Westport’s 112, which has a generous 7.2m beam, is offered with a country kitchen or a main-deck master forward of the pilothouse, a feature that endows the yacht with one of the more appealing attributes of a larger, tri-deck yacht.

Moonen Yachts of The Netherlands has announced a new 30.5m by Rene van der Velden that also expands the aesthetic mould somewhat. The yacht features a main-deck owner’s stateroom thanks to the narrow walkways forward, which are intended for crew use only. Elsewhere the yacht has the most economic layout possible for a boat of the size.

‘The challenge with a raised pilothouse configuration is that it can take a lot of space away from the flybridge,’ says Moonen’s managing director Emile Bilterijst. ‘To counteract this, we have placed the tenders in a stern garage from where they will be launched by slipway rather than an overhead crane. This yacht is an ideal option for an owner looking for a more modern aesthetic within a clearly identifiable Moonen style of gentlemen’s yacht, but with a styling departure.’

Even venerable Burger appears willing to break the mould. In 2011, it partnered with Ivan Erdevicki Naval Architecture & Yacht Design to create an ultra-contemporary design for a 40m that is a far cry from the classic Burger profile.

The new design features a full-beam owner’s stateroom with his and hers en suite bathrooms on the main deck and four guest staterooms below. It has a spacious salon with a formal dining room, as well as informal dining forward of the wheelhouse. It has a tender garage abaft the engine room as well.

Most other major series builders in the 24m to 40m range, including Lazzara, Sanlorenzo, Azimut, Benetti, Ferretti, Horizon, and Hargrave Custom Yachts have raised pilothouse models, many of which present similar profiles. Sanlorenzo has been building them for 20 years. It has five raised pilothouse models in its range: from 26.8m, 28m and 32.9m, with two more on the way.

With the exception of Sanlorenzo, the main deck layouts of these builders feature the country kitchen forward, although so highly styled as to mirror the great room concept in homes. Sanlorenzo offers its 28m with the options of formal dining forward of the RPH and a small crew mess/galley all the way forward; an integrated country kitchen; or with the dining aft of the pilothouse, with the galley and a small breakfast room or crew mess forward.

Sanlorenzo says that younger Europeans who enjoy making boating a family affair are beginning to like the country kitchen approach.

Michael Joyce of Hargrave Custom Yachts says that about 60 per cent of the boats his company sells are RPH models. He believes that despite the main deck space penalty the type carries, the raised pilothouse hits an aesthetic sweet spot, especially with older owners who may carry with them in their heads – or in a frayed manila folder – an image of what a yacht should look like. Hargrave will soon introduce new models.

‘They’re reacting to the styling elements,’ he says of the raised pilothouse type. ‘They’re reacting to the perceived prestige of that profile and whatever subconscious imprint they have of it. There are certain things you perceive to be the best.’ A boat that is too tall for its length doesn’t look good.

In the 24m to 34m class, size, draft, stability issues and aesthetic concerns prevent a tri-deck arrangement, but that hasn't prevented some builders and designers from reaching out for something different to revolutionize the RPH form.

Nuvolari-Lenard have designed several raised pilothouse models for Palmer Johnson including the markedly non-traditional Sports Yachts. Carlo Nuvolari correctly asserts that the Sports Yacht models don't look like the typical raised pilothouse yacht. They are more reminiscent of the express-type boats that exist at the lower reaches of the market, but he suggests they tap into owners' passions.

'People buy boats with their hearts,' Nuvolari says. 'Because the wheelhouse is not so high, you can style out quite a beautiful yacht.'

'The long waterline enhances the efficiency and enables slightly higher speeds. Besides this, the layout provides features like sliding doors at the sides giving a much more open feeling to the salon when required and a flexible layout of the guest cabins,' says van der Velden.

'It's not that none of these features have never appeared before, but I feel that here we managed to combine all of them in one vessel in a very elegant way, making her unique and of interest to many potential buyers.'

Not everyone wants more from their raised pilothouse design. Hatteras, which has built both sportfishing yachts and motor yachts over the half-century of its existence, is introducing a new 30.4m raised pilothouse model in 2013 that aspires to offer many of the benefits of a larger yacht, but in a more economical package. It is a four-stateroom boat, but it has a beam of 6.85m, narrower than its predecessor. It has an exceptionally spacious aft deck and a single central staircase to access the lower deck. Its last 30.4m craft was launched in 2006.

'With the beam reduction, we're getting better economy on propulsion and maintenance,' says Eric Cashion of Hatteras. 'There's no need for a big crew. We're seeing folks wanting the size, but not a big team of crew to manage.' Indeed, the renewed respect for the efficiency of slimmer hulls across the board may itself drive designers back to the raised pilothouse form.

While not exactly a flood, the new raised pilothouse designs coming into the market suggest the enduring appeal of the arrangement. Like de Basto and others, Joyce believes the form has bright future. 'You're going to see more raised pilothouse motor yachts over the next five years,' he says.

Northern Marine 80 Raised Pilothouse Yacht

Northern Marine 80 Raised Pilothouse Yacht

Northern Marine 80 Raised Pilothouse Yacht Details

The Northern Marine 80 Raised Pilothouse has been called a long-distance cruising specialist thanks to the expedition-style hull design. Built on the same hull as the Northern Marine 80-Tri-Deck , the 80 Raised Pilothouse sports a lower profile and a superstructure that has been extended forward benefitting the functional interior arrangement.

The pilothouse on the Northern Marine 80 RPH offers completely unobstructed views over the Portuguese bridge and large bulwarks which help keep guests and the exterior living space dry during cruise. A raised observation area and dining settée are placed forward of the convenient pilot berth that overlooks the helm console which includes a vast array of state-of-the-art navigational and communication equipment. There is a second helm station on the flybridge as well that includes guest seating with 360-degree views. The boat deck extends over the main-level aft deck to accommodate two tenders with ease.

The master stateroom on the 80 Raised Pilothouse stretches the full beam of the yacht and is located midship. While some Northern Marine yachts have the master suite on the main deck, on the 80 Raised Pilothouse it is found on the lower deck. This offers an additional measure of stability and comfort during open ocean crossings. A curved stairway leads up to the main deck from a private foyer serving the owners and VIP suites. Large storage areas for provisions, exceptional ventilation, and an abundant amount of space for guests in their accommodations make this a perfect option for owners looking for a suitable long-range cruising or expedition yacht that has a raised pilothouse.

Apollonian 52: A Totally New Raised Pilothouse Yacht

' src=

Meet the new Apollonian 52, a three-stateroom, solidly built, affordable raised pilothouse motoryacht that’s built for the owner-operator.

Apollonian Yachts, a totally new brand, is the result of a collaboration between storied naval architect Howard Apollonio and veteran broker Vic Parcells. Built in Shanghai, China, hull number one has already been sold in Seattle, and hull number two is ready for viewing there.

Apollonio has been designing yachts for more than 50 years; his credits include Diaship/Heesen, Hampton/Regency, Cheoy Lee, Christensen, Westport, West Bay/SonShip and many others. For his part, Parcells is a partner at Crow’s Nest Yacht Sales in Seattle.

Parcells said the time was right for the boat “because so many customers want raised pilothouse motoryachts. Apollonian Yachts deliver the right combination of quality, comfort and affordability that these buyers are looking for.”

Apollonio said he had planned to build a modern raised pilothouse motoryacht, updating a proven hull, and “we both agreed the layout concept would work well for both couples and families.”

raised pilothouse yacht

With the raised pilothouse and a generous salon, the Apollonian 52 provides large comfortable living spaces with an easy traffic flow for entertaining and enjoying the boat while cruising or on the hook. It has household-sized appliances in the galley, two heads below, with separate showers, and a day head in the pilothouse.

Power comes from twin 425-hp Cummins diesels working with straight shafts, giving the Apollonian 52 a top speed of 21 knots. It cruises efficiently from 12 to 18 knots, and has a range of 447 nm at about 15 knots. The hull and deck are cored with closed cell foam and vacuum-infused for strength, insulation, weight saving and sound dampening.

The salon has a large lounge facing a coffee table and American cherry cabinetry with burled tops. A 42-inch TV on a lift and Bose Surround Sound provide some entertainment.

The well-equipped galley has a fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, deep double sink, four-burner electric cooktop (the boat has a 13.5kW Onan genset), a full-size oven, and Corian countertops. It offers immediate access to both the salon and the pilothouse dinette.

A major gathering spot, the pilothouse has a single helm seat that can pivot to face the dinette table or the helm, a standard Garmin electronics package, and access to the day head. A watertight door opens to the starboard side, and interior stairs lead up to the flybridge and down to the accommodations deck.

Both the full-beam master stateroom and the VIP stateroom forward come with a queen-sized bed; the third cabin has two single berths as bunkbeds.

Base price for the Apollonian 52 is $1,295,000 in the U.S. Future models include 48-, 58- and 62-foot yachts.

Specs.: LOA: 52’0”; Beam: 16’8”; Draft: 4’5”; Disp.: 48,000 lbs.; Fuel: 500 gals.; Water: 240 gals.; Power: 2×425-hp Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels. Read more at http://apollonianyachts.com   and see the video below:
