Lil Yachty Lil Boat album

Lil Yachty’s debut mixtape, Lil Boat , is one of the pre-eminent releases of the SoundCloud era. Released on March 9, 2016, it made Lil Yachty a star, spawned multiple hits, and further legitimized the DIY-style rap that emerged at the beginning of the decade.

The Atlanta MC entered the crowded rapper-singer fray with a work that’s split into two distinct sides, seeing him grapple with dueling elements of his personality and career. The first half of Lil Boat sees Yachty flex his flow, while the second half finds him crooning in AutoTune. That may be a slightly reductive way to look at the collection (in reality, he does both throughout), but there’s certainly a kind of TI vs TIP split-personality concept to the whole affair. Yachty uses his style to demarcate who is who, and, despite his glee throughout, Lil Boat is a surprisingly subtle work for the chaotic time it represents.

A thin red line between love & hate: celebrating yg’s ‘my krazy life’, a standout work.

Yachty’s debut mixtape is a standout work for the usual reasons – great name, great cover, and two singles that will forever be associated with Yachty and the era from which he emerged: “One Night” and “Minnesota.”

As a title, Lil Boat was perfect. Serving two purposes at once, it created a fitting alt.moniker for the MC while helping a lot of people to pronounce his name (did you actually say it like “yacht”?). Nautical luxury isn’t the most commonly-evoked lifestyle in hip-hop (outside of Puffy), so that theme alone was enough to put Yachty in his own lane. And then there’s the artwork: not a yacht, barely even a boat; it’s basically a little wooden dinghy. Beautifully composed, the image looks like a classical painting, bordered in a red that matches Yachty’s hair. It’s almost Americana in tone – though Yachty’s music is anything but.

All hail “King Of The Youth”

Yachty may be poised and confident on that cover, but he’s also lost in the gloom at sea – an apt metaphor for the musical style he was leading. While not traditional in any sense, Yachty is honest with his emotions in a way that younger generations have always been, and Lil Boat found him attempting to navigate his way through the emotionally turbulent years of his late youth. Shortly after his breakout, Yachty would declare himself “King Of Teens” or, alternatively, “King Of The Youth.” This might have sounded ridiculous to adults who weren’t even sure how to pronounce his name, but those adults were no longer in charge. Lil Yachty was not part of some hip-hop assembly line; like other DIY pioneers before him, Yachty and his crew were making these songs at home, often in a matter of minutes.

Outside of the Vikings football team and Ice Cube ’s “What Can I Do?,” Minnesota doesn’t get name-checked very often in hip-hop. Simply naming a track after a state was seemingly in line with the aforementioned “half-Americana, half trolling” theme of Lil Boat – but, of course, the song isn’t actually about Minnesota. It’s more of a celebration of Lil Yachty’s arrival on the scene. The draw and significance of having both Quavo and Young Thug on a song in 2016 is hard to overstate, and their guest appearances turned “Minnesota” into a certified-gold hit. At the time, Quavo was just months away from releasing “Bad And Boujee,” while Thug was fresh off Barter 6 and in the middle of his Slime Season run. Together, he and Yachty appeared at Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 fashion show, on February 11, where The Life Of Pablo received its public unveiling. Just two days after releasing his debut mixtape, Yachty was at the epicenter of one of hip-hop’s biggest cultural shifts.

Unprecedented moves

Lil Boat was big enough that Burberry Perry – Yachty’s right-hand man at the time and the producer behind most of the mixtape – came under pressure from the fashion label Burberry and was forced to change his name. That wasn’t exactly an unprecedented move, but the speed with which it happened certainly was. It’s not often that an internationally renowned fashion house serves a cease-and-desist to a kid who got famous on the internet and was barely old enough to vote.

Perry’s production on Lil Boat ’s lead single, “One Night’ (Yachty’s best-known song to date), guided the way for the rest of the collection. Even the beats he didn’t produce fall right in line, all cascading bells, and whistles alongside keys that let you hear Yachty’s grin throughout.

Lil Yachty’s emergence closely resembles that of the Odd Future collective, who, years earlier, more or less launched DIY rap on the internet (depending on how you view Lil B’s rise to fame). Seemingly overnight, Yachty was partnering with Urban Outfitters and the aptly titled Nautica clothing brand. His rapid ascent would have sounded like fan fiction just a few years earlier but, after his breakout, many artists began following his path to fame on a regular basis.

Having hit it big in such a short space of time, Yachty wasn’t about to slow down. He went on to guest (and absolutely steal the show) on “Broccoli,” a DRAM song with a Yachty-perfect beat. As one of the stars in Quality Control ’s shining roster, Yachty was operating alongside some of the biggest acts in hip-hop. With Lil Boat, he fully shed the “mumble rap” label, completing the transition from SoundCloud sensation to major label star.

March 17, 2016

Atlanta’s Lil Yachty is a pure creation of the Internet. His cult hit "1 Night" found most of its audience through a viral sketch comedy video , and before that, he was being plugged on Twitter  by Ian Connor, a stylist and web curator known mostly for his connection to  A$AP Rocky . He’s indebted to Lil B , too, with free-form verses that mimic Based Freestyles and a carefree energy reminiscent of the Based God’s Myspace days. In short, Yachty thrives in Rocky’s post-regionalist rap universe, a space defined by digital platforms rather than geography. One of his producers goes by Digital Nas. He is definitive proof that modern rap has no gatekeepers, and Soundcloud rap’s laziest possible copy-and-paste job.

There isn’t a single thing Lil Yachty’s doing that someone else isn't doing better, and in richer details. On  Lil Boat , his debut mixtape, he makes a grating mess of these varying influences. The most obvious creative inspiration is iLoveMakonnen , which becomes especially clear on "Good Day," with its creaky falsetto and warbling melody. But Makonnen brings warmth and a feeling of ease to his tracks, while Yachty is constantly straining, as if just getting the words out of his mouth is a struggle. His rapping is jerky and his voice is so flat that Auto-Tune itself seems to buckle under the weight.

Yachty’s main selling point is "fun." This is all supposed to seem easy and unbothered, and it does on cheery tunes like “Wanna Be Us” and “Run/Running.” But everything feels unfinished or undercooked—a handful of songs are just a single verse and a hook, with no clear relationship between the two. So a song like "Not My Bro" opens with a bang and then shrinks back into nothing, a series of pitchy, singsongy whines. It's a lot of things —irritating, boring —but "fun" isn't one of them.

Yachty’s simplicity works in his favor when it comes to catchy hooks. On the better songs here, he sings/raps over bubbly, retro N64-sounding productions (mostly produced by Burberry Perry) that convey childlike wonder and amusement. But the hooks don’t do nearly enough to balance out Yachty’s painful shrieks, and many of his ideas aren’t just basic, they’re sloppily executed. Attempting to form a working model out of the flotsam of the moment is a fool’s errand. But what else is to be expected of a prisoner of shifting tides?

The New Era of Lil Yachty

lil boat by lil yachty

To call Lil Yachty a rapper feels almost reductive. The Atlanta-born artist first rose to popularity six years ago, at the age of 18, with the release of his viral SoundCloud hit “One Night.” The song is fun; it has an almost childlike, sleepy quality that you can’t help but hum along to, paired with sharp lyrics that draw a laugh upon closer inspection. Yachty himself is the physical embodiment of his sound — he sports a cheery demeanor and vibrant beaded braids. Though you may not be inclined to pay too much attention to his work, an inherent sense of positivity awaits his listeners. Since the single’s release, the now 25-year-old artist boasts an impressive resume; he modeled in Kanye West’s 2017 Yeezy Show, earned a Sprite partnership with Lebron James, a Target collaboration with Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen and a list of features and writing credits long enough to fill a book. Lil Yachty’s versatility, inside and outside music, is his lifeblood. His unique brand of bubblegum trap is discernable by its vibe, allowing Yachty a certain flexibility, which he takes in both hands with his newest album, “ Let’s Start Here .”

From the opening chords of “the BLACK seminole.” listeners know they are in for a new treat. Yachty begins his fifth studio album with a song that feels more reminiscent of Pink Floyd than the light-hearted rap his fans have grown accustomed to hearing. Layered vocals croon on but after nearly 7 minutes, the novelty wears off. After the shock of the genre-bending recedes, listeners can find that signature sense of safety that Lil Yachty is so good at creating. At certain points, the album feels more like one from Tame Impala that features Yachty, due to its exploration of psychedelic pop and rap. Yachty at times takes a back seat to the captivating melodies but still proves himself through his lyrics. Songs like “:(failure(:” are honest and vulnerable in a way listeners hadn’t paid much attention to before, but are now given no choice. Though unconventional, and at first glance, jarring, “Let’s Start Here ” isn’t exactly groundbreaking. The artist’s ability to craft a vibe as opposed to an album by itself shines through, resulting in a cohesive piece of art. Though it’s not the most exciting musical work, it shows growth. After 6 years in the music industry, Yachty is still only in his mid-twenties. Perhaps the release of this album is a demarcation of a new era, a more mature Yachty that produces more than just feel-good background music sampling cartoon and video game sound effects.

Lil Yachty isn’t the first rapper to undergo such a change. Psychedelic rock and funk prove to be a safe haven for artists, particularly rappers, looking to break away from their original sound. Childish Gambino’s third studio album “Awaken, My Love” is essential to mention. Whereas Yachty’s album opener is a slap in the face, Gambino’s “Me and Your Mama” is undeniably a punch. The six-minute song opens with twinkling notes and an ethereal choir that intrigues his listeners while lulling them into a false sense of security. At the two-minute mark comes the slam of a guitar and a dark chuckle, opening to a song rife with dark sensuality and passion. This piece from Gambino is not just different, it’s bold. It promises something new and exciting, effectively severing listeners’ expectations for what’s to come while assuring them that it will be worth it. This level of intensity and experimentation is, however, what Gambino fans expect from him. Each of his albums contains multitudes; wailing opening sirens on “Bonfire” are placed beside more placating songs like “Kids” on his 2011 album “ Camp ,” and his 2013 album “ Because the Internet ” dips into the ethereal with the standout song “3005.” The same cannot be said of Lil Yachty. Much of his experimentation is done in work for other artists: his upbeat feature on the 2016 hit “Broccoli” by D.R.A.M. and writing contribution on City Girls’ “Act Up” come to mind. Yachty seems to reserve that signature bubblegum trap for his own discography, and suffers growing pains with his newest album. Blunt as it may sound, the draw of his music in part exists within its ability to appeal to everyone and no one all at once. His viral singles cannot be called hard-hitting as much as feel-good; any change in their sound was bound to feel exponential. “Let’s Start Here” is a wonderful work of production, yet its sound is inseparable from its team of producers and sound engineers who are all heavyweights on their own. Yachty runs the risk of being overpowered on his own album as it aims to make noise, while its creator has found success in doing the opposite.

Where does an artist’s value lie? In their ability to enthrall? In their longevity? “Let’s Start Here” by Lil Yachty makes a strong case for the latter. The album is a cohesive piece of art and another check mark on Yachty’s unending, yet peculiar, resume. It may not be perfect, but it takes a step toward boldness as an exciting new feat for the still-young artist.

Lil Yachty Hilariously Previews New Track On IG To Some Lukewarm Reactions

Yachty's more subdued delivery has some fans on the fence about this one.

2023 Austin City Limits Music Festival - Weekend One

With music, everyone knows it is a subjective art form. People are going to have differing opinions on artists and that is what makes it such an interesting thing to discuss. For example, not everyone is going to think that Lil Yachty has been evolving as an artist . At the end of the day that is okay. The reason we bring this up is because the Georgia multi-talent has recently previewed a new track on Instagram. Lil Yachty appears to be interpolating the 1997 R&B record "Swing My Way" by K.P. and Envyi.

This teaser has been collecting some iffy reactions from fans in DJ Akademiks comment section. One person writes, "His longevity of mid needs to be studied." Another even says Lil Yachty is trying to copy Veeze's style, "ngl dis a waste of this beat n sample n****s think they can sound lazy on every beat like they veeze." However, as expected fans in Lil Boat's post about "Swing My Way" were more favorable.

He asked fans, "swing my way.. should I drop this?¿" They reacted with glee, saying things like, Since Poland bro been allergic to missing 😭🙏🏽" One person loves it, but encourages him to wait for the seasons to change. "Summer anthem potential fr fr u should sit on it until it’s a little warmer out." With the hotter months right around the corner, this could be a smart move. Only time will tell, but this could be another feather in Boat's cap.

What are your thoughts on Lil Yachty's upcoming new track "Swing My Way?" Is this another hit for him, or a snoozer? Can you think of anyone who is on a better run right now? When do you think he should drop this and why? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Yungblud announced his very own festival called Bludfest during a secretive show in London on Monday, March 18.

The event will happen at the National Bowl in Milton Keynes on Sunday, Aug. 11. The lineup curated by the headliner will include Lil Yachty , Lola Young , Soft Play, Nessa Barrett, The Damned and Jazmin Bean.

Tickets will be available at 10 a.m. local time on Friday, March 22. They'll cost £49.50 plus fees.

"Five years ago we imagined a world of our own. In BLUDFEST we have physically built one," Yungblud said in a press release.

"It feels like the next logical step for me. I want to create a physical safe space where people can come and celebrate the ideologies of this community - where unity, individuality and love is the main focus and we bring the world of Yungblud to f–king life right before your eyes.

"I wanted to build an experience where anybody can be completely themselves, with their friends, their family or completely on their own."

Yungblud wants the event to bring different corners of the music world together.

"BLUDFEST will blur the lines of genre and destroy the limitation of imagination. It will be a festival that cuts the corporate b–locks and is all about the people," he said. "My plan is to take it worldwide but this summer is the first one and it’s gonna be something no one has ever seen before in the UK."

The festival will include a joint performance with Yungblug and Lil Yachty, who recently worked together on the single "When We Die (Can We Still Get High?)"

Fans can also look forward to photo booths, the "Make a Friend" tent and a Yungblud-themed museum with artifacts from throughout his career.

Yungblud began posting about the show in North London's Camden Market earlier this week, but didn't announce the venue until today. He also dropped lots of hints about a big pending announcement.

"See you tomorrow. I'm nervous and excited I can't wait to be with you all," the artist said in an Instagram story.

"Be kind to each other today. Spread love. Spread the information and help each other out," he said in a subsequent post.

He signed to Geffen Records, which released his full-length studio debut 21st Century Liability with Interscope in July 2018.

Yungblud's sophomore effort Weird! made it to No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart. The record has also been certified gold there. His self-titled third record also topped the album chart in the U.K.

Last year, Yungblud released a single called "Happier" with Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon . The two artists also toured Asia together last year.

Yungblud's Bludfest featuring Lil Yachty, Lola Young and The Damned will take over the National Bowl in Milton Keynes on Sunday, Aug. 11.MEGA
