  • Introduction Dear reader,

When I introduced my idea to launch a new 'auxiliary website' to Anton van den Bos, Elling Director, he was positive from the first moment. My intention was - and is – to inform you in detail about all qualities and properties of the Elling Yachts. Because all Elling team members are Perfectionists. For your pleasure and convenience.

It might not be easy for you - as a future new boat owner – to judge all properties and the overall quality of the yachts that are on your shortlist. So I decided to portray them in detail in a few hundred pictures. One picture tells you more than a thousand words... This enables you to quickly build up valuable know how in this specific topic. Valuable when you have decided to buy a top class motor yacht. You can read magazines, look into you tube videos and ask owners as well. This website enables you to inform yourself in your lazy chair or during a few – or more – moments to dream away … Enjoy it! My best tip: Visit the ELLING SHIPYARD in Aalst, see and judge all details yourself before you decide to buy a new yacht. Call Anton van den Bos or your country dealer. You will not regret it. Guaranteed!

  • Acknowledgement

Since my photo camera is not too sophisticated, I asked one of the Elling team members to assist me in taking all pictures. Mr. Jan Hotting – cabinet maker at Elling Yachts – has another talent which you can see in nearly all pictures below. He is a professional photographer.

Jan: Many thanks for your help!

  • Elling: the mission to build the world’s best motor yacht in its class

Our Director Mr. Anton van den Bos will be happy to welcome you in Aalst at our shipyard and show you every detail in ‘the making of an Elling’.

Elling Boat Models

Over forty years of boatbuilding experience has resulted in outstanding seaworthiness combined with exceptional levels of comfort. The interiors are spacious and light, with panoramic views from the wheelhouse. Excellent engineering, outstanding insulation and highly advanced engine mountings make these arguably the quietest semi-displacement yachts in the world. Even when cruising at sixteen knots, you will experience less noise in the deck saloon than in a luxury car travelling at sixty miles an hour.

Below decks the Elling is incomparable. Enter the lower saloon and the daylight flooding in from the wheelhouse windows will make you feel you are actually on a much larger yacht. Comfortable ergonomic seating andample couches are a permanent invitation to sit back and relax. There are even widescreen TVs, which pop up and stow away at the touch of a button. The separate galley, with a full-size four-zone stove, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, large fridge and separate freezer, plus two spacious Corian worktops, makes cooking a real pleasure. There’s even a wine cellar under the galley floor. It’s never been so easy to enjoy home away from home.

The super-seaworthy Elling has no fly bridge – her sturdy wheelhouse has a comfortably elevated steering position which affords an excellent field of vision. You can lower the mast at the flick of a switch and pass bridges with a clearance of up to 3.45 meters, opening up the French canals and the inland waterways of the eastern US. Meanwhile, full double glazing, central heating and air conditioning will keep you comfortable everywhere between the tropics and the Arctic Circle. Elling is proud of its worldwide distribution network. Although based in Europe, the yard supports all its clients directly or indirectly through an extensive dealer support program – whether you are sailing your Elling in Europe, the Americas, Asia or the Antipodes.

The New E6 and E6 Highline: 65 feet of luxury and adventure Neptune Marine Shipbuilding has released her latest model, the Elling E6 , in May 2016. This new venture is the crowning achievement of 17 years of research and development following the course set by the successful Elling E3 and E4 models.

The Elling E6 adds a new level of space and luxury to the high specifications already realized by this proven concept. The most remarkable new feature of the Elling E6 is the increase in overall length to 65 feet (19.80 metres) and a new elegant streamlined look.

A world-class bluewater traveller Another key quality of the Elling E6 is its CE category A certification, which means that it will be approved for ocean passages and become part of Elling’s trans-Atlantic range. The yacht also provides a degree of safety similar to a lifeboat – even being self-righting in the event of an emergency. The reinforced Aramid (Kevlar or Twaron) hull ensures the utmost in impact protection.

The Elling E6 has a fantastic thermal insulation and is standard equipped with double glazed windows with insulated window frames for use under extreme climate conditions. Other advantages include minimal maintenance costs, low fuel consumption at hull speed, and an auxiliary engine with a separate fuel tank, allowing the boat to reach safe haven in case of main engine failure. Furthermore the Elling E6 is equipped with an electro-hydraulic operated dinghy garage with enough space for a Williams 320 jet driven RIB.

The main engine on the Elling E6 is a Volvo Penta D13 six-cylinder 900 hp  diesel with a maximum speed of 21 knots. The auxiliary engine is a Volvo Penta D2 four-cylinder 75 hp (55 kW) diesel engine with a top speed of seven knots. The draught will be just 4′ 11″. The yacht will also be equipped with a keel-protected propeller. Great for use in shallow waters.

The large pilothouse has been designed to enhance the alfresco feel.  The additional 16 feet of length and 3 feet of extra beam, significantly boost the feeling of space.  Enhanced living area in the pilothouse easily accommodates up to eight people, Up to eight people can sit and relax in luxury with new comfortable seats. Separate from this area, the pilothouse has two helm seats and a pleasant sofa from where guests can keep the skipper company at the helm position. The interior features 6′ 4″ of headroom. As with the Elling E3 and E4 , the Elling E6 has a second, private seating area on the lower deck, to accommodate another group of up to eight people. Stabilizing The E6 includes the option for a Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilizing system. This achieves a roll reduction of at least 80%, including when the yacht is at anchor.

Experienced sailor is seeking coastal cruising yacht for full time travel, planning to spend as much time as possible at anchor and will be single or double handing. The Elling series of Yachts look perfect for me, maybe start with an E3 or E4 for a couple years then move up to an E6 when I'm ready to go further. I'd really like to hear some experiences from anyone on this forum who has owned any of their boats. They don't seem to be well represented in the USA, but I haven't found any others like it. I like that they are non-flybridge, CE A rated, very solid hulls, and make great use of space. I'm not a fan of the Motor is under a Galley Cabinet situation, though. My previous boat had this and it was a PITA to work on the motor. I'd much prefer a proper engine room with, if not standing height, at least some space around the motor. But this arrangement is what gives these boats the aft cabin that I love so much... and so much accommodations for the length. I'm keen to hear about the shortcomings of these boats. I want to know if you like them overall, but everything that you don't like is much more valuable and important feedback. Pleasant surprises are not a problem , but unpleasant ones I'd like to avoid. I'm re-arranging schedule to try and make it to Miami in the hopes of seeing their boats. (Their website says they will be there, but not which models will be there.) FWIW, the things drawing me to the Elling are all performance related- love the self righting, love that its a proper offshore boat though at this stage I'm only going to do coastal cruising at the most-- maybe a hop from Florida to the Caribbean. Not in a hurry for ocean passages. Also, if you have an E3 or E4, where do you keep your dinghy? The swim platform or on the front deck? Does the E4 have the mast lowering system like the E3? Finally, the bridge clearance of the E6 seems suspiciously low. Does its mast lower as well?

I represented Elling back in 2013 and 2014 and wrote the YachtForums review on the Elling 49. The owner of Elling is a very intelligent and energetic Dutchman but has no loyalty to his sales reps. I got a lot of publicity for him, began building a loyal following, sold 2 Ellings but he cancelled his representation with me for someone who bought 2 Ellings for stock boats. I sold one of them for him. When that dealership didn't go anywhere, Elling got another rep that promised to buy new demos. In spite of my disappointment with how he does business, he builds good boats. The company support on used boats in the US is weak, but the project manager is a great guy and helps out when he can. One of the E4 owners is here onboard at YF. I'll ping him for you. Meanwhile, check out: https://www.yachtforums.com/review/elling-49-e4.22489/ Judy

As you mentioned, the boat's rated CE "A". Here's the definition of "A" from documents from that side of the pond: "A. Ocean: Designed for extended voyages where conditions may exceed wind force 8 (Beaufort scale) and significant wave heights of 4 m and above but excluding abnormal conditions, and vessels largely self-sufficient.’; The definition is amended to exclude abnormal conditions, such as hurricanes and tornadoes and extreme sea conditions or freak waves generated by abnormal conditions". Although I've not made the trip you are suggesting, the boat is up to the task. Plan accordingly. Just remember, that if you decide to run at max RPM's that 400 gallons in the tank disappears at the rate of 7/10 gallon per mile.

Oh, one more thing - the freezer compartment in the galley is pretty weak. Owner #2 of my boat had the foresight to put an ice maker and an additional freezer where the seating arrangement is, just aft of the wheelhouse on the port side. BEST ADDITION EVER!!! The wine storage below the galley deck is wonderful. Although my preference is beer, or Grand Marnier. Trust me - YOU WANT AN E4!!! Fair winds & following seas!
