With Australian DNA at her core, the 48 meter superyacht BIG SKY was designed and built by renowned yacht builder Oceanfast in Australia in 2010. Now, for the first time she has returned home to provide an unrivalled charter experience on board one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest and most extraordinary yachts.

Boasting 4 spacious decks for the ultimate in entertaining, the exterior spaces are carefully designed to ensure guests experience the al-fresco lifestyle Australia offers. Starting at the top deck is the jacuzzi integrated into a huge sunbed bar and u-shaped lounge, down to the sky lounge with undercover dining for 11 guests that flows into the huge lounging area for after meal relaxing. The spiral staircase escorts you down to the main deck into a more intimate lounging area, then dual staircases take you down to the vast swim platform where the fun really begins.

The interior spaces of BIG SKY are both sophisticated and modern, her neutral palette appealing to a wide variety of tastes, styles and clientele. The yacht offers a vast selection of lounge areas and dining spaces. Each deck has a fully stocked bar ensuring the crew can service your every need . One of her design highlights is the full beam main saloon creating maximum interior space, boasting huge windows allowing plenty of natural light and views of the stunning scenery.

11 guests will enjoy restful nights at sea aboard BIG SKY due to her zero speed stabilisation system. With five elaborate staterooms, each of which is outfitted with an en-suite bathroom, the master suite is located forward on the main deck, this full-beam sanctuary benefits from abundant natural light courtesy of large windows. The yacht’s additional four staterooms are located below deck and include three queen staterooms, each with walk-around beds, and one double stateroom, which also has a Pullman berth.

She offers guest accommodation for up to 11 guests with a layout comprising a master suite, three double cabins and one twin cabin. There are 6 beds in total, including 1 king, 3 queen, 1 double and 1 pullman. She is also capable of carrying up to 9 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Big Sky features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels.

We provide a world class boat, you choose to become the skipper, you select your crew (family / friends), and you provision the vessel for the charter holiday and experience of a lifetime – In doing so you charter the boat under a Bare-Boat hire agreement and take our yachts out sailing yourself. An inspiring experience. Our Skipper Yourself Bare-Boating option, is our most popular.

The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go – Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems. After your briefing, if you are still not 100% confident, we offer additional sail training, which many of our novices pre-book to maximise their holiday enjoyment and safety.

Do I need a license to go bareboating?

No, you do not need a licence or experience. We are so excited and very committed to helping anyone new to sailing get out and onto the water. Adventure Still Lives. One of the most legendary yachts on the charter market, the 157-foot (47.85m) tri-deck superyacht BIG SKY is truly remarkable. This impressive motor yacht is outfitted with all the amenities needed for an exceptional on-water holiday that guests will never forget. Charter yacht BIG SKY was launched in 2010 by renowned yacht builder Oceanfast, who also is responsible for the yacht’s exterior design and naval architecture. The interior spaces of BIG SKY are sophisticated and modern. Designed by Alder & Tweed Design Co., the yacht offers ample lounge areas. Her main salon features massive windows allowing plenty of natural light and stunning views and is perfect for entertaining thanks to a 65-inch surround-sound TV and state-of-the-art Audio/Visual package and Wi-Fi throughout. Adjacent to the main salon is the dining salon that offers formal dining for 11. The yacht’s skylounge is another fantastic entertaining area with innovative sliding windows that create an alfresco effect throughout this deck. The space is outfitted with a beautiful onyx bar, multiple seating areas and an 80-inch surround-sound TV.

Eleven guests will enjoy restful nights at sea aboard BIG SKY in five sumptuous staterooms, each of which is outfitted with an en-suite bath complete with robes, slippers, Molton bath products and more. The master suite is located forward on the main deck. This full-beam sanctuary benefits from abundant natural light courtesy of large windows. In addition to a sumptuous King bed, this stateroom also has a chaise lounge to starboard and desk and chair to port. The en-suite features a stunning deep sculptural tub, a separate stall shower, an enclosed toilet and bidet and spacious vanity with his-and-hers sinks, among other amenities. The yacht’s additional four staterooms are located below deck and include three queen staterooms, each with walk-around beds, and one double stateroom, which also has a Pullman berth. All staterooms are beautifully appointed and offer en-suite baths. Why I’m Now Obsessed with the Great Barrier Reef

Sleeping under the stars on the Great Barrier Reef, hikes to secret coves and swims among stingrays at Australia’s most beautiful beach – and I did it all from my Airlie Beach base, says Felicia Arhontissas.

For anyone venturing to tropical North Queensland, Airlie Beach is a must-visit destination. On a recent trip to the Sunshine State, my time revolved around this lively beach town. Year-round tropical weather, an electrifying night life and a UNESCO World Heritage site at its doorstep make it the perfect base for adventures to the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands.

This is how I spent my short-but-sweet time in The Whitsundays, packed to the brim with incredible day trips. 

Day 1: Whitehaven Beach

My time in The Whitsundays began with a visit to Whitehaven Beach with Red Cat Adventures . After their shuttle whisked me from The Boathouse Apartments to Coral Sea Marina, I was handed a wetsuit before boarding a speedy scarlet catamaran – one of the fastest in The Whitsundays. “Hold onto your hats,” our guide advised, “because we’re only stopping for a lost hat if there’s a head attached to it.” 

Cue AC/DC’s Thunderstruck , blaring from the speakers as the boat sped over choppy waves, intermittent sprays of saltwater drenching the first five rows, much to the delight of the thrill seekers up front. At Tongue Bay, we disembarked and meandered to Hill Inlet Lookout for some of the best views in the Whitsundays. The turquoise water below swirled in ever-changing patterns drawn by sand, the shapes dictated by the changing tides.  

Itching to get into the water, we headed back along the walking trail, turning right off the main path toward the beach. The sand underfoot, made from quartz and 98% silica beads, felt soft as silk. And through the crystal-clear water we could clearly see the dark shapes of stingrays moving in a graceful dance around us while we swam. 

Day 2: Reef World, Outer Great Barrier Reef

One of the best ways to experience the Great Barrier Reef? Sleeping on the Reef World pontoon above Hardy Reef. Here I was to learn about the Outer Great Barrier Reef firsthand, thanks to a Reefsleep stay with Cruise Whitsundays.  

By late morning we arrived at our pontoon and home for the night. We were invited to don wetsuits and set off on a snorkelling safari, sign up for a diving excursion or simply soak up the sunshine with an icy drink on the top deck.  

Snorkelling in Hardy Reef feels like dreaming in technicolour. Picture shimmering turquoise parrotfish, yellow-striped butterflyfish, fluorescent-blue-tipped hard coral, and peachy soft coral swaying with the current. Deeper out, we spotted a big-lipped Māori wrasse, giant clams, silver giant trevally and a 350kg Queensland grouper called George who liked to hang around the pontoon – he’d become a sort of celebrity out here. 

The overnight included drinks and all meals prepared by a French chef. We even snacked on sunset canapes with prosecco. Dinner kicked off with scallops, cooked oysters with chili and grilled prawns followed by Spanish mackerel prepared to perfection and served with velvety sweet-potato mash and roasted broccolini and asparagus. A decadent brownie drizzled with raspberry compote capped off this memorable meal. Post dinner, I descended below deck to the underwater observatory. Here, time fell away as I sat mesmerised by a silver wall of giant trevally swimming before me, attracted by the lights from the pontoon. 

We slept in two-person swags on the top deck, overlooking the reef and kitted with a mattress, night light and fan. While every part of the Reefsleep was memorable, the moment that lingers in my memory was witnessing the sunrise from the comfort of my swag’s flap door. Watching the sky shift from grey to purple, gold and finally blue as the sun rose over the horizon was well worth waking early for. 

Day 3: Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is worth a day all to itself. Locals typically organise a catch up 'at the Lagoon' where you can enjoy a splash or find a quiet spot on the grassy knoll for a sneaky afternoon nap. If you’re willing to venture just out of town, you’ll find some of Queensland's most impressive beaches including Hideaway Bay, Coral Beach and Grays Bay. 

I opted to spend my evening soaking up the town. My self-contained two-bedroom apartment boasted a prime location along the marina, and my furnished balcony overlooked super yachts docked in the marina – it was the perfect spot for a sunset drink.  

I was an easy five-minute walk from the town’s main street where I passed restaurants, pubs, bars and shops. On the hunt for live music, I followed the crowds to Magnums’ beer garden and was met by cheap pints, a buzzing atmosphere and some toe-tapping tunes. For dinner, I was spoilt for choice, with everything from juicy burgers and frozen daiquiris at Little Vegas Burger & Bar , to seafood towers at Airlie Beach institution Fish D’vine , and sizzling steaks at KC’s Bar & Grill .

Hamilton Island is ripe with experiences for any type of traveller, from nature enthusiasts to spa seekers and gourmands in search of their next feast. Today, I branded myself a hiker, keen to explore some of the bushland – which makes up 70% of the island.  

My backpack crammed with sunscreen, water, snacks and a camera, I set off for Coral Cove. Following the trail through bushland, I paused at the halfway point to take in views of the mangroves cropping out from aquamarine waters. This moderate trek takes approximately two hours to complete and starts just a five-minute golf buggy ride from the marina. The prize? A pristine beach, fringed by palm trees and featuring a giant swing. I stayed for what felt like hours, enjoying a mini picnic, lazing on the sand with a book in hand and cooling off in the glassy water.

If you’re planning to get amongst the islands, whether on a skipper yourself yacht charter or with a local tour operator, then you’re likely to be bookending your trip with some extra holiday time in Airlie.

About Airlie Beach

Whether you’re looking for vibrant nightlife and shopping or you’re after a slower-paced, relaxing escape in paradise Queensland’s Airlie Beach will not disappoint.

The town of Airlie is relatively compact, making it a great place to explore on foot. You’ll find plenty of cafes and restaurants, palm trees to read a book under and several rainforest hikes on the outskirts of town.

If you enjoy a music scene, then Airlie Beach is the spot. Airlie hosts some great bars and pubs, which always seem to have live music or DJs playing when the sun goes down. The town attracts some really big international acts, so keep an eye on the gig guide when planning your trip.

Due to its proximity to the Whitsunday Islands ,  Airlie Beach attracts yachties from all over the world who use the marinas as a pit stop or place to stay for a while. Some “old salts” joke that Airlie is a drinking town with a sailing problem! Honestly, Airlie has a good reputation as a party town and a sailing mecca. But the problem bit is yet to be proven.

There is much more to Airlie than its party reputation, with something on offer for everyone, from upmarket weddings to retirees, to families and backpackers making their way around Australia – Airlie is a town that gives its visitors access to tropical living and the gorgeous Whitsundays in a way that suits them.

The Gateway to the Whitsundays

Most of the Whitsunday Islands are national parks, making them so spectacular because they are pristine. Crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, rainforests and abundant marine life make sailing the Whitsundays feel like you’re on the set of a movie. And the gateway town to this island paradise is Airlie Beach, with Whitsunday Rent a Yacht’s base at Shute Harbour being the closest mainland port.

Where is Airlie Beach Located?

Located 25 km southeast of Proserpine and 150 km north of Mackay and surrounded by the Conway Ranges National Park, Airlie is just far enough away from a big city to keep its charm. The closest big city is Townsville, 275 km away.

How to get to Airlie Beach in North Queensland

Proserpine Airport is only 30 minutes from Airlie Beach, and it receives all major airlines from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Several airport transfer services are running from the Proserpine Airport and, of course taxis and rental vehicles. We recommend using either Whitsunday 2 Everywhere , Heart of the Reef Shuttles or Airlie Beach Transfers & Tours

Alternatively, flying into Hamilton Island airport is another way to get to Airlie. Resort Link is the islands shuttle service which will take you to the Hamilton Island Marina. You can then catch a stunning ferry ride with Cruise Whitsundays through the island to either Shute Harbour or the Port of Airlie.

When is the best time to go to Airlie Beach?

Airlie Beach is a subtropical environment, so the weather is mostly fine throughout the year.

Winter is one of the best times to visit the Whitsundays , with clear skies and an average daily temperature of 23°C. Many boating enthusiasts say the ultimate time to visit the Whitsundays which is September to October. Spring brings perfect weather and calm seas.

While coinciding with the start of stinger season, November to December are great months to stay in Airlie or charter a yacht away from the crowd and before the wet season. Late summer can get humid, and it’s also the wet season, with temperatures sitting at around 32 degrees. The wet seasons vary, but often it rains in the afternoon and evening with clear skies during the day, making the wet season a great time to travel on a budget and taking advantage of low season rates.

Where to stay

Airlie Beach has a wide range of accommodations for all budgets.

Backpackers will find several hostels in Airlie’s township , with adjoining restaurants offering discounted meals.

Another budget accommodation option is one of the many caravan parks in Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket. Families will love the award-winning Big 4 caravan park in Cannonvale with its petting zoo, mini-golf, huge waterslide park and heated swimming pool.

If you’re looking for more upmarket accommodation, there are plenty of resort hotel complexes with pools and views over to the islands. Check out Pinnacles Resort and Peppers and the Coral Sea Resort to name a few. Also, along the waterfront, you can find luxury serviced apartments at the Mirage where you’ll hear the sounds of the sea from your room.

Where to eat

There are many amazing places to eat in Airlie, and it’s hard to list the best, but we asked around the office, and these are our top local eating haunts.

Fish D’Vine

Constantly voted one of the best places to eat out in Airlie Beach, Fish D’Vine & Rum Bar serves fresh seafood with a range of local catches on the menu. And if rum is your thing, or even if you aren’t sure but open to dabbling, check out the 500 different types of rum behind the bar and the cocktail menu.

Operating since 2012, you’ll find La Tabella on the esplanade serves delicious Italian food.  This is a great spot for people-watching as it sits right on the strip opposite the beach.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can dine inside or out for alfresco dining on the Esplanade. And a hot tip for people travelling from the big cities, if you’re looking for a “Melbourne-style coffee”, this is the place.

Northerlies

Northerlies is one of those places that the locals tell you to check out. The open-air venue is lovely and breezy with picturesque views making it feel like you’re at a classy resort with a relaxed atmosphere.

It’s hard to find a bad review about the food, and the craft beers on tap are always a hit. The venue offers musical entertainment on the weekends, games behind the restaurant and a complimentary shuttle bus to and from the town of Airlie.

Whitsunday Sailing Club

The Sailing Club is one of the best views in town. If you want to escape the businesses but stay right in the heart of Airlie Beach, follow the coastal boardwalk west past the esplanade, and you’ll see the sailing club tucked away on the coast.

This is the best spot for a sunset drink as the outlook is west, over the ocean and hilled landscapes. The bistro is open for lunch and dinner and serves both members and visitors.

For anyone wanting a home-cooked meal, a vegetarian/vegan alternative or simply something fresh, have breakfast or lunch at Café One3.

Located on Waterson Way up from the main drag, this little gem of a place is unassumingly great. The owners serve and cook all of the food, taking great pride and care in their menu. You can take a cookbook or magazine off the shelf, play a board game, and spend a morning here knowing you’re eating something to nourish yourself in good company.

Free things to do in Airlie Beach

Not everything in Airlie Beach comes with a price tag, and you’ll find plenty of things to do around town that won’t blow your budget. Some of the best free things to do around down include:

• Spending days lazing by the Airlie Beach Lagoon in the centre of town. Families will love the sandy beach by the children’s pool and the nearby playground.
• Soaking up the vibes and meeting local store holders at the Saturday morning market
• Taking a hike to Cedar Creek falls or the Honeyeater lookout
• Walking the bicentennial boardwalk along the coast, passing shops, restaurants and the Coral Sea marina
• Explore the Whitsunday Coast . Take a drive up the Whitsunday Coast to Cape Gloucester, picnic at Dingo Beach or have an unforgettable lunch at Montes in Hydeaway Bay

Areas Surrounding Airlie Beach

Technically speaking, the town of Airlie Beach is small. However, due to the proximity of neighbouring suburbs, it feels much bigger.  While Airlie is where the action is, it’s worth checking out some of the surrounding suburbs, which are all less than 10 minutes away.

Shute Harbour

We are biased because Shute Harbour is where we live, but we think Shute is the best place on the Whitsundays’ mainland. With stunning views of the islands, a large natural harbour and surrounded by the lush Conway National Park reaching down to the coast – Shute is a tranquil haven.

There’s great fishing off the jetty and several walks in the area. Coral Beach can be accessed from the Shute Harbour residential area. A short 2 km walk through the rainforest, and you’ll find yourself on a secluded beach which is, you guessed it, made of coral.

Shute Harbour is 10-minutes south-east of Airlie Beach

You can take the Bicentennial boardwalk and track north from Airlie up to Cannonvale. It’s a lovely 3km, mostly waterfront walk with great views and no hills! The best thing you can do on your bicentennial walk is to stop off at The Fat Frog Café in Cannonvale to rehydrate and maybe grab a delicious brunch.

Cannonvale has a beautiful sandy beach, a great spot for swimming, barbecuing and exploring. At the end of the beach, you’ll find some rock formations with rock pools to be enjoyed at low tide.

Cannonvale is a 3-minute drive north of Airlie Beach.

Jubilee Pocket

Jubilee Pocket sits snugly inland, just slightly from the Airlie coast. The kids (and parents) will love Jubbilee’s huge fenced playground shaped like a castle, complete with a decent flying fox.

For a local favourite, check out The family-friendly Jubilee Tavern , where you can get classic pub meals for great prices, again with a playground for the kids. They have special nights such as $20 pasta or Parma night, making “The Jubes” a great option for the budget-conscious traveller.

Jubilee Pocket is only a 2-minute drive to the south of Airlie

If you are without a car, you can access the areas surrounding Airlie using the local Whitsunday Transit bus , which stops in all suburbs.

There are so many reasons to travel to Airlie Beach and equally as many ways to enjoy the area. Whether you’re looking for vibrant nightlife and shopping or after a slower-paced, relaxing escape in paradise, this coastal Queensland town will not disappoint.

Important Information

Cruise Ship Passengers:

If your cruise ship itinerary or departure times change within the cancellation policy of your vessel, we will do our best to assist you in finding other alternatives. However, in most cases we will not be able to issue any kind of refund. It is for this reason, that we strongly recommend you have travel insurance, as cruise ship schedules are known to change frequently.

All prices are stated in Australian dollars and include GST. All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Tour Operator. The Tour Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.

It should be noted that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard clients, we cannot be responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of our clients which are beyond our control. We recommend that all clients have travel insurance covering illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure.

In the unlikely event of your trip being cancelled or stood down, all guest communication is required to go through our Online Store via telephone or email. While there is a Sailing Whitsundays retail outlet located Airlie Beach, please be aware that they operate as a separate entity and are unable to access reservations made by the Mr Travel online department.

Please be aware operators pass on credit card merchant fees so there is a non-refundable 1.5% surcharge for VISA and MASTERCARD card purchases.

20% Public Holiday Surcharge to be paid on the day via Eftpos.

Open Date Vouchers / Gift Certificate:

Shipping Costs are in addition to the ticket price and will be added at check-out. Shipping costs are non-refundable and do not makeup part of the ticket value. 

E-Vouchers incur no shipping fees. You have 5 years to use the value of the voucher. Seasonal Price Rises will apply if travelling out the current seasons pricing. Vouchers can be exchanged for free up to the full value of the voucher excluding credit card fees and charges.

Cancellations

Client Cancellations:

All cancellations forfeit 25% of the recommended retail price (RRP) - not the discounted/sale price. No shows or client cancellations made within 7 days of departure forfeit 100% of the total ticket price. 

Transfers between tours can be made at the suppliers discretion, however, it should be noted that supplier fees may apply. Tour transfers also incur a $20 administration fee. 

It is compulsory that all cancellation requests are in writing and sent via email to [email protected]. Cancellations attempted via online chat or phone will not be actioned.

Supplier Cancellations:

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.

All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Service Operator. If the Service Operator has to cancel the trip or activity (prior to departure) and we cannot offer a suitable alternative, then a refund will be given minus a 20% administration fee and any associated card fees. We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance, especially during the wet season.

All refunds are in Australian Dollars and must be made to the card of payment. Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel is not liable for exchange rate fluctuations or fees, or any other merchant/bank fees associated with domestic and/or international transactions.

Where a full refund is applicable, there is the option to transfer the whole cost of the tour to another tour or “Credit” to avoid the administration fee. A transfer fee of $20 will apply.

You will be emailed confirmation once the refund has been processed. Once the refund has been processed, it may still take time for the banks to clear the amount. Please allow 7-10 business days for the funds to clear into Australian accounts and up to 21 business days for international accounts.

Accountability/Misconduct:

All Service Operators have the right to provide client feedback and to cancel bookings based off of feedback from other Service Operators.

Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel will treat this as any normal client cancellation and therefore the cancellation fees stated in the Client Cancellation Policy will apply.
